A2 Roadworks

The following roadworks have been reported by various highways agencies and official transport sources.Click on a roadworks item to view more details on the traffic map.

The A2 is a major primary route in Kent, southeast England and one of the oldest roads in Britain, as it originally dates back to the Romans who created Watling Street, parts of which form most of the A2 route today.

The A2 is one of the busiest roads in the country, with some sections of the motorway carrying over 50,000 vehicles a day. The busiest section is between Crossways and the Bean Interchange near Dartford, where almost 70,000 vehicles a day pass through.

The road is generally safe, with the reported accident rate historically being a third lower than the national average, mainly thanks to high levels of traffic calming and safety measures such as speed cameras and rumble strips. As the road is one of the more windy stretches of the UK motorway network, there is a very strong emphasis on keeping the speed of traffic down, with recorded accident and casualty statistics being very low.

The busiest times on the A2 are during weekday rush hour, with particularly busy periods on Fridays and Mondays when people are returning home from a weekend away. At weekends, the road is still busy but less so than weekday peak periods. Sunday afternoons are usually the peak times thanks to the influx of holiday makers travelling back to London and other major cities in the Southeast.

Why does the traffic reports not say coastbound or London bound all this westbound eastbound no one understands that please make it simpler

Why has the A2 at Wilmington junction been shut this week with nothing on any traffic notifications, surely you could leave one lane open but then again you lot never think about the people that use the road every night.

Live A2 traffic updates after serious lorry and car crash closes road

Kent Police and an Air Ambulance are in attendance at the scene

The A2 has been closed in both directions after a crash involving a car and a lorry. The road is currently closed between A227 near Gravesend and M2 Junction 1 near Rochester .

Kent Police and an Air Ambulance are in attendance at the scene. According to National Highways, damage has also been caused to the barrier on the road.

In a Tweet, National Highways said: "#A2 is closed in both directions between #A227 near #Cobham #Gravesend and #M2 J1 / #A289 near #Rochester due to a collision involving a car and a lorry. Kent Police and an Air Ambulance are in attendance. Barrier damage also reported. Updates to follow soon."

Traffic monitoring site Inrix said: "A2 in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to serious accident, a lorry and a car involved between M2 J1 (Strood, Strood) and Henhurst Road (Henhurst / Cobham Services, Gravesend)."

Police confirm driver has died in A2 crash

Police have confirmed that a driver has died after a fatal crash on the A2 this morning.

The incident, which involved a black BMW and a red Royal Mail articulated lorry, happened near Gravesend at around 9.50am.

Pictures have emerged showing the huge emergency response to this very serious crash.

Fire engines, police cars, ambulances and even the air ambulance were app pictured on the busy road after the serious incident.

Diversion route for Westbound A2 traffic

Initially follow the solid square symbol, via the A289 north, the A226 west and A227 south.

Highways England have warned that additional journey times are also expected on diversion routes.

'Consider alternative routes'

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "Our officers and South East Coast Ambulance Service are at the scene of a serious collision on the London-bound carriageway of the A2 near Gravesend.

"The collision involving a lorry and car was reported at around 9.50am today (Friday 5 August 2022) and our patrols closed both carriageways while emergency services dealt with the incident.

"The coastbound carriageway reopened at 12.24pm. The Londonbound carriageway will remain closed and an investigation into the circumstances is underway.

"There is continued congestion in the area and motorists may wish to consider alternative routes."

A2 still closed, with traffic being diverted

The A2 Westbound remains closed following a serious accident near Gravesend. The road has been closed for a number of hours after the crash, which involved a lorry and a car, this morning. The Eastbound carriageway is now open.

• Congestion to Northfleet coastbound, back to the M2 J2 Medway Bridge Londonbound. Heavy on alternative routes between Gravesend and Strood, via Higham and the A289, and in both directions into Strood from the M2 J2 and Wainscott .

Eastbound carriageway is now open, Westbound remains closed

• Congestion to Northfleet coastbound, back to the M2 J2 Medway Bridge Londonbound.
• Heavy on alternative routes between Gravesend and Strood, via Higham and the A289, and in both directions into Strood from the M2 J2 and Wainscott .
• Also delays diverting down to the M20 at J6 Maid.

Heavy congestion around A2

Traffic maps show heavy congestion around the A2 and diversion routes following the crash this morning.

Highways England has warned that additional journey times are also expected on diversion routes.

'It is anticipated that this closure will remain in place for a number of hours'

A statement from Highways England has said: "It is anticipated that this closure will remain in place for a number of hours.

"Kent Police are carrying out a full accident investigation. An Air Ambulance has attended."

"Delays are building on the approach to this closure, with approximately 15 minute delays and 2 miles of congestion in both directions.

Additional journey times are also expected on diversion routes."

Long queues are forming in both directions

The A2 has been closed in both directions this morning. Pictures from the road show long queues as emergency services respond to the incident.

Drivers are asked to follow the diversion which is as follows:

Eastbound - Initially follow the solid circle symbol, via the A227 north and the A226 east. *Stay on the A226 east to Gads Hill Farm - and then head south on the A289 south, to the M2 J1.

Westbound - Follow the solid square symbol, using the above roads - in reverse order.

'Very serious injury'

A spokesman for National Highways said: "The closure is due to a collision involving one lorry and one car, resulting in a very serious injury.

"Kent Police are carrying out a full accident investigation. An Air Ambulance has attended.

"It is anticipated that this closure will remain in place for a number of hours.

"Additional journey times are also expected on diversion routes."

Burkina Faso suspends BBC and Voice of America after they covered a report on mass killings

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Burkina Faso has suspended the BBC and Voice of America radio stations for their coverage of a report by Human Rights Watch on a mass killing of civilians carried out by the country’s armed forces. Burkina Faso’s communication spokesperson said that both radio stations would be suspended for two weeks and warned other media networks to avoid reporting on the story. The report published by Human Rights Watch on Thursday said that the army killed 223 civilians including 56 children in villages accused of cooperating with militants. The United Nations on Friday called on Burkina Faso to reverse the suspension of the two international broadcasters.
