While the complete round trip from Bergen usually takes a full day, you can opt for a partial tour that focuses on the Nærøyfjord section.

Alternatively, you can opt for a shorter fjord experience which includes taking an express boat tour to Mostraumen . These tours typically depart from the Fish Market in Bergen and provide a two-hour round trip to the narrow Mostraumen strait. The boat journey takes you through beautiful fjord landscapes, passing waterfalls, steep cliffs, and picturesque scenery.

Tourists interested in Munch’s art can explore various museums and galleries in Bergen to experience a broader spectrum of Norwegian artistic heritage, even though the artist’s personal ties to the city are not as prominent as his connection to Oslo and Åsgårdstrand.

  • Nick F 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to see the Fjords Even in wet weather, this was a beautiful 4 hour journey, with great scenery and some informative narrative along the way. The design of the actual boat could be better, as by the time we got to the boat we were stuck in seats facing backwards and the view was best from the outside decks. But was nice and warm inside and there was good external cover from the rain. Read more Written April 13, 2024

Well worth going, the Fjord is beautiful! I would recommend wrapping up warm though. There is warmer seating inside the boat with small cafe serving drinks/food. But out on deck requires a few warm layers and Thermo's under jeans. Read more Written March 28, 2024

  • 771aineh 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Freezing but incredible Views were amazing, waterfalls were mostly still frozen and there was still snow around - so so gorgeous but absolutely freezing to stand outside in even with lots of layers on. The inside cabin was nice and warm but arrive early to get a good spot. We went on a Monday and the trip actually runs at 11am instead of 10am because of a cruise that arrives in on the same day. Our ticket said 11am but the website said 10am but there was no explanation of this to make it clear unfortunately. Otherwise a great experience Read more Written March 15, 2024

  • James M 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Stunning views and an incredible experience Went during a rainy/cloudy day. Was surprisingly much better than if it had been clearer. The fog, snow and icy water made for some absolutely breathtaking views while the catamaran itself was ultra smooth. • Rdmwest10 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Icy fjord trip. It was a horrible morning: rain, poor visibility and a cold wind. We were thinking of delaying trip if we could but were convinced otherwise by a wise crew member. When we got out of the harbour the snow clad mountains rose up either side and we could see the tops. Icy and freezing on deck but we'll worth it as we pushed through sheet ice and marvelled at frozen waterfalls and deserted villages. Breathtaking and expertly guided. • MrsFeeler 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Worth every penny This was a really great cruise. Anyone who says they had to stand up for four hours inside must be hallucinating, because it's a pretty big boat and it was half empty when we went. If Trip Advisor says this is booked out, try Rødne's website, because that's what happened to us. Absolutely a great cruise. The staff was friendly, the captain came and chatted to passengers, the steward was really lovely, the views were amazing, the price was great; absolutely no complaints about this cruise. Would definitely do it again. Read more Written January 8, 2024

This was already recommended...the only thing I would encourage anyone to do is to wrap up. Even if you think you will be warm enough, add another layer. We did and spent the trip out on deck. It was windy, but the views were magnificent. It's December there was a lot of ice about but it was also stunning and the crew showed us lots of different inlets etc. Brilliant trip. A Cruiser’s Guide to Bergen, Norway

As a UNESCO World Heritage City, Bergen, Norway offers attractions both ancient and modern. With colorful architecture, ancient cobblestone streets, and a medieval fortress, this charming city is a favorite of cruisers visiting the Norwegian fjords.

Plan Your Bergen Excursion

You can easily explore this maritime marvel on your own on foot or using Bergen’s reliable transportation system. However, there are great options if you prefer a guided tour.

The Bergen Card

If you plan on visiting museums, save money by buying a Bergen Card. To purchase, stop by the tourist station by the Fish Market or buy one online at the Visit Bergen website.

Tip: while you’re at the tourist station, pick up a bus and rail schedule if you’re planning to use public transportation, which is both convenient and affordable.

What to See and Do

There are so many things to do and see in Bergen that it’s hard to condense them down into one article. These are some of the most popular activities.

Fløibanen Funicular Station

Your first stop needs to be the Fløibanen funicular station because queues tend to build up. At the top of Mount Fløyen, you have a spectacular of the surrounding islands, bays, and the city below.

  • Bryggen Wharf

A UNESCO’s World Heritage List attraction, Bergen’s ancient wharf hails from the year 1360. This is where you’ll find all the best artists, jewelers, and textile designers.

Fisketorget (Fish Market)

Near the Bryggen Wharf, you can stop in at the Fish Market (Fisketorget) for snacks, fish samples, and shops. The market has been a central meeting place for the townsfolk for hundreds of years as Norwegian diets are heavy in fish. The most authentic thing you can eat in Bergen is smoked salmon baguettes, whale burgers, and prawn. If you’re looking for a gift to bring back, a package of smoked fish is your best bet here!

You’ll find plenty of locals at the fish market | Photo: Visit Bergen/website

Bergenhus Fortress

Don’t miss the chance to wander around the Bergenhus medieval fortress. It’s one of the oldest buildings in Norway and its right at the entrance of Bergen Harbour. Over the years it’s been used to house royalty, hold church services and as a military fortress.

Old Bergen Museum

At this open-air museum, you can experience the atmosphere of 1800s Bergen. The houses are only open for guided tours, so be sure to join one. It’s an interesting look at how people in Norway lived hundreds of years ago.

KODE Art Complex

Stroll through the state of the art four-building KODE museum and view works by Picasso, Edvard Munch, and more. There are multiple galleries so you can spend as much time as you’d like viewing the art.

  • Norden og Verden: Scandinavian-made wooding cutting boards, leather bags, wallpaper
  • Juhls Silver Gallery: Handmade earrings and necklaces
  • Museum of Norwegian Knitting Industry: Gloves, scarves, and sweaters made on-premises

Where to Eat in Bergen

You’ll be hungry after all of that sight-seeing, or you may want to dive into Bergen’s delicious foods straight off the boat.

Bergen Food Tours

We want to point you in the direction of a Bergen Food Tour. These fabulous tours may fulfill all of your Norwegian food fantasies.

Bryggeloftet & Stuene

The food at Bryggeloftet is pricey, but most customers consider it to be Bergen’s finest classic Norwegian cuisine. Favorites include the mussels and duck with beets.

Get to know The Port of Bergen

Port of Bergen seen from a birds view

About Port of Bergen

The Port of Bergen has for many hundred years been one of Norway’s most important cities for trade, fishing, petroleum activities, ship technology, cruise tourism, and aquaculture. Today, Bergen is Norway’s second largest port, and it is one of the most popular cruise destinations in Northern Europe. Its key areas of focus are to promote sea transport and to manage, operate, and develop port facilities. The Port of Bergen is committed to the development of innovative and sustainable solutions for a more eco-friendly port. The company has about 50 employees, and its offices can be found at the Jekteviken Terminal in Bergen.

The Port of Bergen has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. It dates back to the founding of the city, in the 12th century. At that time, Bergen was an important trading city and a center for maritime activities in the region. In the 14th century, Bergen became a crucial base for the German Hanseatic League, a trading alliance that dominated trade in Northern Europe. Bergen Harbor became a hub for the trade of stockfish, grain, and other goods, leading to a significant need for port infrastructure to serve the growing commercial activities. Bryggen, an iconic part of Bergen, was established in the 14th century. It consisted of wooden buildings that served as trading houses and warehouses. Bryggen is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The port continued to grow and evolve throughout the centuries. In the 18th and 19th centuries, significant modernization efforts took place, including the construction of quays and dock facilities to accommodate the increasing ship traffic and cargo volume. Today, the Port of Bergen is a bustling port that serves both national and international shipping. The port plays a vital role as a hub for trade, passenger transport, the fishing industry, and offshore activities. The Port of Bergen also focuses on sustainability and environmentally friendly initiatives. There is a growing awareness of reducing the environmental impact and implementing green and energy-efficient solutions in port operations. Throughout history, the port has maintained its significance as an important port in Norway and a strategic hub for trade and maritime activities in the region.

Our mission

Port of Bergen’s social responsibility is to contribute to increased transport by sea, and to facilitate efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly port operations. As a designated port in the national pandemic preparedness and response plan, the Port of Bergen is tasked with specific duties during events that may have severe implications for international public health. Furthermore, the port infrastructure and its operation form part of the emergency preparedness and response system of the Norwegian Armed Forces. The cargo terminal in Bergen is a core network port and is one of seven designated Norwegian facilities with a special function in the comprehensive network.

We aim to be clear and aligned in all our internal and external communications.

We strive to be proactive in the work we do.

Solution-oriented

We will always seek to find the best solutions, go the extra mile, and maintain a positive attitude toward challenges.

Beyond the facades of bryggen, the historic heart of bergen, norway.

The colorful facades of Bergen's Bryggen district hide a rich history.

Several hundred years ago, German-speaking traders would arrive in Bergen with boatloads of grain, cloth, and other vital commodities. They would stay for a few days in the wooden warehouses that line the harbor, before stocking their boats with dried fish from Lofoten and heading back to Europe.

Today, the trading houses of the Hanseatic League remain, but they are home to eclectic shops, vibrant galleries, and quaint cafés.

These colorful wooden buildings, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, continue to tell stories of a time when Bergen was a bustling center of trade under the Hanseatic League's influence.

As visitors wander through the narrow alleyways, they are transported back to medieval times through the distinctive architecture and the creaking sounds of the wooden planks underfoot.

The area is not just a relic of the past but a lively part of the modern city. A visit to Bryggen is one of the top things to do in Bergen .

Although the Hanseatic Museum is the best place to learn Bryggen’s story, it is closed for a long-term refurbishment. In the meantime, there’s still plenty of places to visit to get the most out of your trip.

Explore Every Alleyway

Start your visit with a stroll through the narrow alleyways that run between some of the buildings. This is where you’ll discover more details of the wooden architecture.

The alleyways of Bryggen open into courtyards.

Each alleyway emerges into open courtyards that offer a peek into the bustling life of the historical traders.

While exploring, you will also stumble upon small cafes and boutique shops tucked away in these historic corridors. Here, you can savor a cup of locally roasted coffee or find unique handcrafted gifts to take home.

Today, Bryggen is home to numerous small, artisan boutiques and workshops. From traditional Norwegian knits to contemporary art, these shops offer unique souvenirs crafted by local artisans. It's a great place to pick up something unique and support local creators.

The atmosphere in Bryggen is enriched during the warmer months when the courtyards and alleyways come alive with outdoor seating, cultural performances, and art exhibitions.

These gatherings are a modern continuation of the community's vibrant social life, reminiscent of the historic assemblies that took place in these very spots centuries ago.

See The Assembly Rooms

Known as Schøtstuene in Norwegian, the Assembly Rooms provide a glimpse into the communal life of the Hanseatic merchants. They gathered here for food and entertainment, particularly during the colder, winter months.

These buildings are characterized by their simple yet robust wooden architecture, designed to withstand Bergen's damp climate. Inside, visitors can explore the large open fireplaces and original artifacts, offering insights into the social dynamics of the era.

Although the Hanseatic Museum itself is temporarily closed, the museum continues to run guided tours of Bryggen starting at the Assembly Rooms. Tours are included in the ticket price.

Bryggens Museum

Ironically, a fire that destroyed much of Bryggen in the 1950s ended up saving the district. Prior to the fire, the rundown area was popularly known as ‘the rat’s nest’.

The fire triggered archaeological digs, which revealed significant finds that reawakened interest in the district and the history of the city.

Bryggens Museum showcases some of the archaeological discoveries made in the Bryggen area of Bergen, ... [+] Norway.

Today, Bryggens Museum stands over the remains of an early settlement at Bryggen, showcasing some of the archaeological finds. In the museum, visitors will learn more about the fires, the rebuilding, and the story of the medieval trade routes that drove the growth of Bergen.

Learn About The Renovation Process

Bryggen's iconic wooden structures, originally built in the 14th century, have been rebuilt multiple times following fires but still retain their ancient charm. Much of this is due to the careful renovation work, conducted using traditional materials, tools, and techniques.

Bryggen is still under threat, with rotting foundations the latest problem. This is the reason for the ongoing restoration work, in particular on the Hanseatic Museum building.

Information boards around the site detail the renovation work going on at any particular time, while windows allow visitors to see progress.

The Story Of War Resistance

If your visit to Bergen falls on a weekend in the summer, call in to the Theta Museum for a unique perspective on the Second World War.

This tiny, one-room museum inside one of the old Bryggen buildings was used as a resistance base during the war, and the guided tour will reveal its secrets. It’s open for just a few hours on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, between June and August.

Dine In Historic Surroundings

Dining in Bryggen is an experience in itself. Many restaurants and cafes here are housed in buildings dating back several centuries. Enjoy fresh seafood dishes, traditional Norwegian cuisine, and international flavors with a historic backdrop.

For fish and seafood, look no further than the highly-rated Enhjørningen . Named after a Unicorn (and easy to spot thanks to the unicorn sculpture on the front of the building), the restaurant presents the bounty of the ocean in traditional surroundings.

Expect catfish, monkfish, halibut, and a classic Norwegian fish soup on the menu. Booking ahead is essential.

A Super Fun Bar Harbor Cruise Port Itinerary (On Your Own)

D uring our unforgettable Canada and New England vacation, my friend Angie and I sailed into the breathtaking port of Bar Harbor, Maine, aboard a Holland America cruise. As our last stop, we couldn’t wait to explore all that this charming destination had to offer— from exploring picturesque Acadia National Park to catching glimpses of celebrity homes. We crafted a meticulously planned itinerary that perfectly suited our desires. Here is the Bar Harbor cruise port itinerary we created that left us with perfect Maine memories.

First, Rent a Car

Angie and I were promptly picked up at the port by Enterprise rental cars, as we had arranged in advance. After a 30-minute drive, we arrived at the airport, where we collected our vehicle. Although the process of reaching our destination and completing the necessary paperwork took some time, the rental price was reasonable, and we were pleased to have control over our day’s itinerary.

With excellent fuel efficiency, the car proved to be cost-effective, resulting in a total price of $140, including refueling and the rental itself. While the roads were easily navigable, cellular service was intermittent in certain areas.

To see how the cruise played out, check out this article about the Canada and New England cruise .

Seal Harbor

Located just 30 minutes away from the Bar Harbor cruise port, we decided to take the scenic route towards Acadia National Park and explore the highly recommended areas. One such area is Seal Harbor, renowned for its stunning mansions and celebrity residences, including the likes of Martha Stewart.

Navigating through the winding roads of these charming neighborhoods can prove to be a challenge when trying to find specific addresses of the homes you wish to see. Nonetheless, we strolled along, marveling at the magnificent multi-million dollar properties that dotted the landscape.

Venturing out to MDI (Mount Desert Island) is an absolute delight, as it is home to Bar Harbor and a cluster of upscale Maine towns. These towns are favored summer destinations for affluent socialites and boast impressive art galleries, exquisite dining options, and unique accommodation choices.

The charming city of Ellsworth, nestled on the way to Acadia National Park, offers a picturesque gateway filled with delightful attractions. From museums to birding hotspots, and the captivating Timber Tina’s Great Maine Lumberjack Show that runs throughout the summer, there is plenty to enjoy. Don’t miss the incredible telephone museum, an intriguing dive into our communication history.

Among the charming towns, my personal favorite is Northeast Harbor , reminiscent of serene hamlets found in upstate New York. Its quaint village shops, captivating eateries, and an air of sophistication make it a playground for the affluent, including notable homeowners like the Rockefeller’s.

While exploring, be sure to visit Main Street Mercantile, a must-see shop brimming with souvenirs, glassware, household items, and delightful baby gifts. It’s truly a joy to uncover the hidden treasures of these enchanting small towns at your own pace.

Lunch at Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound

Angie and I share a love for food, and we were thrilled to indulge in some delectable fresh Maine lobster. I’m confident that you’ll feel the same way. After receiving a local recommendation, we eagerly made our way to Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound , a charming restaurant that has been serving customers since 1956.

Here, you’ll discover some of the finest lobsters in the world, sourced from Mount Desert Island and sold within hours of being caught. It doesn’t get much fresher than that!

For our meal, both of us opted for a Lobster Roll accompanied by sides of coleslaw and potato salad. The rolls were perfectly crispy on the outside and delightfully soft on the inside. What’s more, they were generously filled with juicy lobster meat. A side of melted butter provided the ideal complement for dipping our lobster rolls, resulting in a truly divine bite.

Visit Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park, commonly known as the Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast, stands as the premier attraction in Bar Harbor. It is one of the easily one of the key reasons the cruise ships tend to visit here on their Canada and New England itineraries . Our Holland America ship featured some amazing Acadia National Park trips, but we wanted to see several other things in the area, hence curating our own itinerary.

Immerse yourself in the grandeur of this massive park, spanning across half of Mount Desert Island. Begin your exploration by traversing Park Loop Road’s winding 27 miles, where scenic overlooks and captivating photo opportunities await at every turnout.

Marvel at the breathtaking views offered by the oceanside cliffs, granting you a splendid vantage point of the park’s pristine beauty. Encounter the serene beach setting of Thunder Hole and Sand Beach, a stark contrast to the lush, tree-covered mountains. The rhythmic force of the surf lapping against the rocky shore is sure to mesmerize.

During our visit to Acadia National Park , we unfortunately couldn’t find the time to explore the renowned Jordan Pond House and its scenic trail or indulge in the famous popover restaurant. Instead, we decided to head to Frenchman Bay, where we captured breathtaking photos of the stunning beachfront and the majestic mountains in the background.

Keep an eye out for the picturesque Porcupine Islands, the charming mounds of land rising from the shimmering waters of Frenchman Bay.

Cadillac Mountain

The pinnacle of Acadia National Park awaits at Cadillac Mountain, its granite-topped peak towering at an elevation of 1532 feet. As the highest mountain along the North Atlantic seaboard, this awe-inspiring summit treats visitors to a panoramic 360-degree vista overlooking Bar Harbor, Frenchman Bay, and the Cranberry Isles.

A close second in terms of natural beauty lies within Jordan Pond, an exquisite area framed by the majestic Penobscot Mountain and the iconic “The Bubbles.”

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the wild blueberries that flourish in the area, adding a delightful touch to your journey. While witnessing the nation’s first sunrise may prove unlikely for cruising enthusiasts, Cadillac Mountain proudly holds this title. Trust me when I say the pictures depicting this remarkable spectacle are nothing short of magnificent.

Bass Harbor Head Light

For those with a passion for lighthouses, a visit to Bass Harbor Head Light is a must. Perched on the rugged granite shoreline of MDI, this historic beacon, dating back to 1855, stands as one of the most photographed lighthouses along the Eastern Seaboard.

While visitors can explore the impressive grounds, please note that the lighthouse itself is privately owned and not open for public entry.

Shop for Souvenirs in Bar Harbor

Downtown Bar Harbor, just steps away from the cruise port, is the ultimate destination for all your souvenir needs. From unique and cheesy mementos to adorable and fantastic treasures, you’ll find practically every type of souvenir here. Spend your entire day leisurely browsing through the relaxed and fun offerings available in this port.

Don’t miss out on visiting two must-see stores: Cool as a Moose and Fair Trade Winds. These stores are packed with an array of goodies that will leave you spoiled for choice.

If you’re a jewelry enthusiast like myself, you’ll be thrilled to know that Maine is the source of the elusive watermelon tourmaline. The pieces available here are absolutely stunning. Additionally, there is an abundance of upscale food products such as jams, jellies, sauces, syrups, and more, that are perfect for taking home as souvenirs.

No trip to this region of Maine would be complete without indulging in the flavors of blueberry. We highly recommend trying the blueberry soft-serve ice cream cone from CJ’s Big Dipper. Heavens to Betsy, it’s truly phenomenal!

As you leisurely stroll along the pedestrian-clad sidewalks and explore the immaculate stores, galleries, and wineries, it becomes evident why Bar Harbor has remained a beloved New England summer retreat for over a century.

Bar Harbor: A Visit to Remember

Upon completing our day tour, we returned the car to the airport. Angie and I were then chauffeured back to Bar Harbor, allowing us to explore the area near our cruise ship at our leisure. Opting for self-guided exploration in Bar Harbor proved to be an excellent decision. We avoided waiting for large groups to embark and disembark from buses, skipped unwanted destinations, and were not bound by rigid itineraries.

Planning your own trip shouldn’t pose any difficulties. We hope that these recommended suggestions for the Bar Harbor cruise port mentioned above will enhance your experience in this remarkable destination.

**I was hosted on this cruise by Holland America, but our day on our own was at our own expense. As with all of our articles, opinions and reviews are 100% ours and unbiased.
