'85-'94 Ski-doo Safaris

  • Add to quote

I was just wondering about the Ski-Doo Safaris. I wanted to know if they are good motor, good gas mileage, good performance, and basically maintenance-free. I was wondering what the a good price would be for an '85-'94 safari. It dosnt matter what model of safari it is, as long as the 377 motor has twin carbs. Thats a must. If someone could tell me what year and model of safaris had the twin carbs and what the top speed would be of this sled it would be great. SWRules

Safaris can be had here around Barrie, Ontario for about $500. bucks or less. I'm talking about the 377's that are single carb, I'm not sure if the the 477's had twins or not but they are pretty much not worth anything around here unless you ice fish. Leaf springs and ziltch for suspension are there biggest downfall. I have a 85 safari right now that I have had since new and this sled had never let me down during the years I did ride it and I rode the snot out of it. It will go forever on a tank of gas, the only thing it cost me was a new starter rope and thats it. I do know the Citation SS had the same motor pretty much with the twin carbs and were a hoot in there time but these sleds are really outdated.

We sold our 93 377 Safari Deluxe this year. It was a twin carb and never let us down. It would run 80-85 flat out on a hard surface. It was a good beginner sled for my son who was 12 when we picked it up. It sold for 2000 with 3800 km on it and barely a scratch. It was always serviced and it showed. It rode good and handled OK on good trails. It wasn't much at off trail riding. It was very easy on gas. For a beginer sled or to tool around the farm it is great. For aggressive trail riding, no way. Mind you that big windshield kept you as warm as could be.

what year was yours BARRIEMACHZ?

My uncle has an 88 377 and the only thing he has had to change in almost 15 years now is a track. the sled still starts on first pull everytime. it is still fast enough to keep up with alot of the new sleds. he still loves it. it has about 25,000 k on it . he dosen't do any road riding or he dosen't ride in low snow conditions. guess that is why he has never changed Hi-Fax.

Fuzzy: Does it have 2 carbs? Electric Start, hand/thumb warmers? Speedo? Tach? How fast has he had it going? Ok thanks.

FREEZERBURNT: How was the Scout E on gas? What colour was it? Good performance??

Yellow but mine was painted black by previous owner :hallo1: Some Safaries are black, some are yellow and some are burgundy Its a 377 so it runs great for a 377 it will do 100kmph They are good on gas

One carb has a spedo no tach ,electric start or any other options like that.. track is a 118 or a 121 X 16 1/2 " don't know what spped he has had it at. it was a fast skidoo in it's day. the same cc cats and poos couldn't look at in speed or deep snow. he is thinking about getting a Gade next year so his son can use the 377. forgot to mention gas milage was excelent. before I got my sks I had a tundra and I would bunr two tanks of gas to his one. he gets about 15-17 MPG Click to expand...

How much would it cost for someone to put a second carb on say a '89 Safari 377?

Would it increase the power much? faster accelaration and top speed?

Got a 89 safari cheyenne 503 Long track, just did the first rebuild after 20000 km. A part from the susp which is a real POS, it is a great work sled ,not for trails though. Top speed was 95 kph.

Ski-Doo Safari. Good starter sled?

Looking at a couple of mid 80's to early 90's Safari 377 sleds. Just wondering if anyone has one? Any issues with your sled? Good for a beginner? Thanks

My wife had a 88, and my daughter had a 89.. They were great on gas and oil..Rode a little stiff compared to the newer iron..The motors are a well proven design.. Good starter sled.MMV.

you should be able to find something 10 years newer for the same price I suspect.. unless its under $500

ski doo safari scout

What price Dude :wtf: he did not mention price I had a 85 Safari 447,87 Safari 377 and 89 Safari Scout E(same as 377),all good sleds great in deep snow for the power Only thing to watch is the oil injection pump on the recoil and the secondary helixes as the setting pin likes to eat as at them BTW stay away from the Safari L or any Safari with Aarms front as they are heavy POS 100+ lbs more then the leaf spring 84-92 Safaris and no good off trail and riding like a lumber wagon even with independant

ski doo safari scout

i had a 89 when i was younger. it spent almost as much time upside down than it did on the track. was a great starter sled for young kids but for a little extra you can get something with the same power but with a wider ski stance, which in turn makes it more stable for the beginner.

ski doo safari scout

We had a 93 and it was a great sled. Never missed a beat while we had it.

We had a 92 LCE 4?? cc liquid, single carb when I was in High School total POS compared to the 94 arctic cat cougar 440 we had. The cougar was faster, rode better, less repairs, and easier for beginners to maneuvar.

ski doo safari scout

I have a 1984 Safari 377. I have found it damn near bullet proof. It's seems the harder I ride it, the better it behaves. They are very inexpensive to repair should the need arises and parts are ready available. I bought a full parts sled for 80 bucks and stripped it. I will say you might outgrow its top speed quickly as the single carb units top out about 40 to 50. I plan to shave my heads this spring and rebuild a motor I blew up and bore it 20 over which will bring the 377 to approximately a 442cc. It is a really fun ride though.

My dad had an 85 Safari 377 very good beginner sled, Handles very good, great on gas, light snowmobile. The only real issue is the suspension or lack there of. It's smaller than most of the full sized sleds of the 90's. It doesn't set the world on fire in the power department either, but it wasn't really made to be fast.

ski doo safari scout

That motor was around forever in a few sleds right up to 04-05 in the 380 MXZ, might just run forever

1992 Ski Doo Safari 377

  • Add to quote

I am looking at a 92 safari. can get it for around $600. It is very good condition with 1700 miles. It needs carb boots but comes with new ones. Any thoughts out there about the 377? I just want it for the kids and wife to ride around. Very nice, clean looking sled. I have searched the forums for problems, etc and cant seem to find very many....thanks for any comments

ski doo safari scout

Between the 377 and the 583 I'd say doo has the two most reliable engines before the 21st century!

thanks Funny you mention these two engines together....My other sled is a 93 grand touring with the 583......also picked up on craigslist for $400--needed some work but overall a great sled.... Thanks for all the help....going to get it tomorrow...

ski doo safari scout

great little sleds. good for the kids and the wife if you want to go for a little cruise around the yard or on the trails. top out about 65-75 so not that fast. id say very reliable. I'd get it for that price.

ski doo safari scout

Having owned these for about 10 years, they are bullet proof. One thing though is that off trail in deep snow they tend to get stuck easily. They are great machines for trail riding. Check for any delaminating idler wheels and rough bearings and replace as needed. At that price and mileage, you can't go wrong!

ive got a 90 safari scout with the 377 in it and it goes anywhere i want it to go even in deep snow, must be my luck i guess. i have had my safari up to 70 mph but ran out of room it was hard pac log road but hey great sled

1988/89 ski doo safari 377

  • Add to quote

Im new to the forum and i have a couple of questions. I was given this sled and i dont know if its a 1988 or 1989. it runs good for the age but it looks really ugly. Does anyone know where I can find the same hood or a different hood that will bolt right on thats in decent condition? And my second question, the previous owner disconnected the oil injection. Is it worth reconnecting? If yes, how would i do this. thanks for any help.

I have an 83 and 84, and they are ugly. But anyway, look on the tunnel tag, should be mid=way down the right, I think. If it says manufactured in 88, then it's an 89. Look at ebay or a snowmobile salvage yard for a new cowl. And the first question on the oil injection is why did he disconnect it? Was it broken? The main question is, how important to you is oil injection (i.e. just driving up to a gas pump)? Hope this helps.

I'd be careful reconnecting the oil injection. If the previous owner just pulled the oil supply line and left the pump on the engine, than I'll bet the pump is toast.

well i have been mixing. You guys make a great point he probably did disconnect it because there was a problem. I dont mind at all mixing but just to be sure what is the exact mixture needed? I have been running 40:1. And also is there any different cowls that will bolt right up from a newer sled?? by the way it is a 1989. Thanks rotaxrage and butters_mcfeely for your help.

I would mix the gas 50:1. 40:1 seems a little much, but it is not a huge deal. As far as the hood goes, any hood from a Safari 89 or older should work and there are probably others from that same vintage (maybe the citation???). In 1990 they redesigned the front end of the Safaris and those will not fit on your sled. A great website to go to for cross reference is http://216.37.204.206/ingles/Skidoo_oem/skidoo.asp they have microfiches of all the skidoo sleds from 1987 to 2003. Take a look on there and you may find some other cowls that you could use.

thanks a lot for the help butters_mcfeely

I agree...50:1

I got a 1986 safari scout 377 2 cyl im not sure if its something wrong with the cylinder but the left cylinder pulg always fouls up i was wondering if anyone ever had a problem old sled or not maybe just the plug cap. Could the plug cap be the problem ?

Have you done a compression test?

ski doo safari scout

dual carbed or single?

single carb and compression is good

Spark plug wires and caps can give trouble and it is common on a sled that is getting old!

ski doo safari scout

so exactly what is your problem could be many reasons why you have a fouled plug is it running bad

ScoobyDoo519 said: so exactly what is your problem could be many reasons why you have a fouled plug is it running bad Click to expand...

when the sled is running good how long is before you feel it running bad? could be the crank seal on it's way out head gasket leaking when engine is hot and losing spark. it never hurts to take the plug caps off and snip a bit off and reinstall the caps. and the 377 exhaust manifold bolts are notorious for coming loose on the left side this will also make you loose spark

ski doo safari scout

So the fan side is ok, the PTO side is fouling? I think you should try a hotter range plug in the pto side, leave the fan side as it is.

Try replacing the spark plug caps. Also tells what the bad plug looks like. Really back and dry? Black and wet? Looks normal but doesn't work?

The safari Scout 377, if I am not mistaken is simply the same safari they produced since the early 80's. In 1990 the Safari series changed chassi's to the A Arm front end. Ski Doo kept the "scout" in the lineup which was the older style leaf spring front end chassi that the safari had been in since day 1.
