Daniel Friesen gründete sein Start-up Bonn City Tours während seines Masterstudiums der Geschichte . Wo er im Siebengebirge am liebsten unterwegs ist und wieso er sein Unternehmen gründete, berichtet er hier im Quadratlatschen-AKTIV-Interview.

Frage 1: Welchen Ort im Siebengebirge hast du am liebsten und warum?

Daniel Friesen : Am liebsten wandere ich zum Drachenfels hoch. Da mischen sich die Vorlieben für Bewegung, Natur und Geschichte einfach perfekt. Das spannende ist die wechselhafte Geschichte dieses Ortes. Man muss sich vorstellen, dass diese Burg einst absichtlich an einem so abgelegen und unwirtlichen Ort zu Kriegszwecken errichtet wurde. Genau diese raue Natur empfinden wir heute aber als erhaben und besuchen gerne den Drachenfels, um nach einem anstrengenden Aufstieg dann den Ausblick zu genießen. Diesen Gedanken finde ich sehr spannend.

Frage 2: Welche Rolle spielt das Thema „Bewegung“ in deinem Leben?

Daniel Friesen : Bewegung ist meiner Ansicht nach der Schlüssel für Gesundheit, daher spielt das Thema eine große Rolle. Ich bin froh in meinem Beruf als Stadtführer viel zu Fuß unterwegs zu sein. So kann ich die Bürophasen mit den Spaziergängen gut abwechseln. Meine Hündin Lara sorgt ebenfalls dafür, dass ich auch spätabends, manchmal schon im Schlafanzug, eine Runde um den Block gehen muss.

Frage 3: Du bist Gründer von Bonn City Tours. Wie kam es zur Gründung?

Daniel Friesen : Vor zwei Jahren bin ich aus meinem Auslandssemester in Irland zurückgekommen und habe dort die irische Art und Weise Stadtführungen zu halten, sehr schätzen gelernt. Zurück in Bonn habe ich mich dann entschlossen diese positive Erfahrung zu teilen und habe mich mit Bonn City Tours selbstständig gemacht.

Es gibt hier in Deutschland ein Vorurteil, dass teilweise einfach stimmt. Für sein Geld muss der Gast eine Menge bekommen. Also eine Menge Daten, Fakten, Namen usw. Alles Dinge, die man relativ leicht im Netz recherchieren kann und die man schnell vergisst. Genau deshalb versuchen wir bei Bonn City Tours, Geschichten nicht einfach nur zu erzählen, sondern in Zusammenhang mit der Stadt zu bringen und auch lokale Anekdoten kommen nicht zu kurz. Bisher kommt dieses Konzept bei den Gästen sehr gut an und ich habe mich nun entschlossen, dies hauptberuflich zu betreiben.

Frage 4: Welche waren deine bewegendsten Momente während deiner Touren?

Daniel Friesen : Für mich war es sehr schwer, ein Start-Up zu gründen und parallel meinen Master in Geschichte zu absolvieren. Vor allem die Anfangszeit war finanziell und emotional sehr schwierig und stressintensiv. Umso mehr habe ich mich über die positiven Rückmeldungen von Gästen und die Hilfsbereitschaft vieler Bonner selbst gefreut, die diese Idee tatkräftig unterstützt haben. Solche Momente haben sehr oft einen Tag komplett ins Positive gedreht.

Frage 5: Und zum Schluss eine typische Quadratlatschen-Frage: Welche Schuhe ziehst du am liebsten an und warum trägst du diese so gerne?

Daniel Friesen : Ich liebe einfach Sneaker. Ich weiß, es sind nicht die gesündesten Schuhe, aber damit kann ich leben. Inzwischen habe ich sogar eine Marke gefunden, wo die Schuhe nicht nach fünf Monaten komplett durchgelaufen sind und die sogar sehr gemütlich sind. Schleichwerbung werde ich hier aber nicht betreiben.

Greetings, my name is Daniel. I am a local and history student here in Bonn. Some time ago I studied in Ireland where I enjoyed a lot travelling around the countryside and especially doing Free Walking Tours.

Back in Bonn I had an idea: Why not share the fun I had and do tours in Bonn myself?

This is where I started to combine my enthusiasmn about history with the experiences I made abroad. The concept: an alternative city tour!

Local guides with passion for history show you the city in a relaxed atmosphere. We do not throw dates or specific terms at you without even explaining what they actually mean. We want you to have fun!

You can come to our tours whenever you want and there is no fix price. We just show you around and tell interesting stories of historical places and happenings. In the end you decide how much the tour was worth to you! Great Musicians, which-hunts, politics, or fun facts – feel free to join us to discover the great stories told in the small city of Bonn!

Bonn has more interesting things to offer than one might reach by foot in one tour. We are offering you a personal bus tour in an original VW-bus from 1966 through the South-End and the old government district in Bonn. You will hear stories about Bonn as a bishop´s residence, as a capitol and as a conference city today while showing you the nice and hidden parts of our lovely town.

Bonn · StattReisen and Bonn City Tours are breaking new ground. Historical tours, walks through the Old Town and other themed tours are now being offered via Zoom. They bring Bonn to people who can't be out on location.

Daniel Friesen, who founded Bonn City Tours, is now offering virtual tours of Bonn.

Discover Bonn from the comfort of your own sofa. In these times of living through the pandemic with months of contact restrictions, city tourism is taking a new approach. Whereas people used to go from place to place to find the most interesting corners of the city or hear the most exciting stories, historical tours are now available online. The StattReisen association and Bonn City Tours now take their guests on historical walks virtually. So you can sit in the comfort and warmth of your own home and walk in the footsteps of Beethoven without any effort. Or you can learn exciting things about conspiracy theories during the period when Bonn was hit with the plague and cholera.

"Actually, I was just looking for a way for my regular customers to remember me and rescue my small company at the same time," explains Daniel Friesen, young entrepreneur and founder of Bonn City Tours. Initially, he had developed so-called "Culture Gigs" for Telekom, which were presented there to employees and business partners. The success was so overwhelming that Friesen expanded this new offer to include all customers.

"The virtual tours started as a temporary solution for the winter lockdown. In the meantime, however, they have also opened up new prospects for me in the long term," says the 30-year-old. That's because it's a way to reach even those who can’t be on location, he adds. "For example, those who want to get information in advance of a trip, or those who come to the city for studies or a new job and want to get a first impression," says Friesen. He currently has three tours on offer: a classical city tour, one centered around Beethoven, and another leading into the government district. The walks have already been recorded, and Friesen comments live on the various meeting points, answering and responding directly to questions from viewers who are tuned in live.

The StattReisen association is also moving from the streets to the web. At the end of March, for the first time, the Night Watchman Tour of Bonn will be on Zoom. To join the tour online, participants receive an e-mail with their booking containing a link that they can use to connect to the tour. "We are really very pleased, the demand is good," says Norbert Volpert. For the tour to happen, the city guide walks through Bonn with a cameraman at the same time as the broadcast. "It is important to us that we present an authentic atmosphere," says Volpert. Although everyone involved had to get used to the new medium during the first trial runs, "we were very surprised at how it was possible to have intensive and close encounters. Our viewers are always there, they can watch, listen and ask questions. So they don't have to miss out on any Bonn experience and are right in the middle of it."

StattReisen currently offers a total of four virtual tours. In addition to two Night Watchman tours, there are "Mysterious Bonn" and "Between Platform 11 and Office 99”. In April, it's "Matricula, Marx and Magnificence". The cherry blossoms in Bonn's Old Town are not forgotten either. And even if the streets behind the Stadthaus (town hall) should be closed to crowds of visitors, as was the case last year, StattReisen will present this unique wonder of nature on the web.

"My virtual walking tours are more successful than I thought," Friesen says, taking stock. "But the income is not enough to at least cover the costs." He wishes he had more support: "The November (government) aid didn't arrive until the end of February, and the bureaucracy is hard to manage alone. Without the support of my family, I wouldn't have survived as a young entrepreneur.”

Am 20.Juni 1996 wurde im Rahmen eines kleinen Festaktes die Zukunft Bonns als internationaler UN-Standort besiegelt. Eine Erfolgsgeschichte. Seit 25 Jahren wachsen die Vereinten Nationen am Standort Bonn. Die UN sind mittlerweile zu einem wichtigen Wirtschaftsfaktor geworden. Konferenzen wie die Klimakonferenz 2017 rücken die Stadt in den Mittelpunkt des Weltinteresses.

Über 20 UN-Organisationen haben sich bis jetzt "angesiedelt" und es werden weitere folgen. Der Bonner Historiker Daniel Friesen hat sich mit Bonncitytours selbstständig gemacht. Er hat im Auftrag von Radio Bonn/Rhein-Sieg einen kleinen Film speziell zu diesem Jubiläum gedreht. Eine exklusive Stadtführung, die ihr bequem vom Sofa aus angucken könnt.
