Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire (with Materuni waterfalls, coffee tour) - 6 Days

Fantastic experience and great to see 4 very different areas. The guide was very good at spotting the more distant animals and the food was great. We were expecting to camp each night on this budget safari but 2 nights were in a cabin complex, which was a pleasant surprise. Highly recommended.

Big Five Luxury Safari in Tanzania **Sustainable Approach to Travel

I salute Tanzania for having managing national parks so well. Safari is done in a respectful manner to the environment and the animals. We saw all the animals and their babies. The trip was unforgettable.

5 Days Tanzania Enticing Explorations Tour

5 Days Tanzania Enticing Explorations

We were with Steppe Dogs Adventures for 5 days on safari in the Lake Manyara, Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater. Our driver Joseph Mashine was one of the best you can ever find out in the bush. He drove us safely through all muddy waters while others got stuck. And he is a fantastic spotter. We could see with him all big 5 and above all the Serval cat which is a rarity on its own. The whole trip was perfectly organised and they found for us the perfect stays in the tented camps. As the non plus ultra they organised for us a balloon safari with the most experienced balloon pilot Paco. It was the once in a lifetime experience. 2 million wildebeests as far as you can see. Unbelievable. If you really want a safari out of the common tracks Joseph is the man. He managed to be on spots nobody was there. Asante sana Mashine.

6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Encounters Tour

6 Days Tanzania Wildlife Encounters

When you are in Australia and you want to plan a photo safari in Africa, you want a local person to talk to. You want this person to be knowledgeable, attentive to your wishes and needs, and reactive. Frank is all that. And when you are over there, you want the people taking care of you to be professional, ready to satisfy your specific demands (I'm an amateur photographer) and friendly. My driver/guide Donath was all that. So I'm completely satisfy with this agency and I strongly recommend it.

Tanzania Safari Tour Reviews

The safari to Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area was excellent. The guide, Lewis, was quite knowledgeable, the accommodation better than other camp sites, and the meals very delicious. It also helped that we saw all five of the Big 5! In addition, we saw baby elephants rolling about in the mud, a pack of spotted hyena dealing with a carcass, and a male and female lion attempting to mate. Lake Manyara was a little disappointing because the heavy rains had stirred up the mud in the water and discouraged the birds from feeding there. I also felt that the guide was not as informative as Lewis. The visit to Materuni Falls was good although very muddy because of the wet weather. The food was excellent and the coffee tour very lively and entertaining.
After a Kili climb we went on Safari. The arrangements at the lodges and the experience of our guide, Peter, made the trip memorable and unforgettable. We recommend using Oneseed for Safari and letting them take care of all of the plans from a hot air balloon ride to birthday celebration. It was a wonderful experience all the way around. We so treasure the trip and seeing the animals in their natural environment.

FAQ’s for Tanzania Safari

For wildlife safaris the best time to travel to Tanzania is from July to October. This is the dry season when viewing opportunities are better due to vegetation dwindling making the bush less dense while animals congregate around water holes to drink. Keep in mind that this is the peak season and Tanzania attracts a lot of visitors from all over the world so it can be busy plus it’s a more expensive time of year. On the other hand, the shoulder season, November to March is a great time to travel too. Although the bush is thicker so it’s harder to see wildlife, this time of year has less visitors and can be more affordable  For more information about the best time to travel to Tanzania, including its’s coastline, check out our Best Time to Visit Tanzania guide .

The great wildebeest migration  in Tanzania and Kenya is the largest annual migration of around 1.5 million wildebeest and thousands of zebras, antelopes, gazelle, impala and eland. The migration is a result of dwindling grazing making the animals move to greener pastures following the rainfall pattern. This large-scale migration is fraught with dangerous river crossings where predators are lying in wait. The migration continues year round as the animals travel in a circular route from Tanzania to Kenya and back again. The rains in April and May get the herds of wildebeest on the move in the Serengeti on their journey towards the Masai Mara, Kenya. Once they have reached Kenya, they graze in the Mara. In a few months, the vegetation is exhausted and the animals start their journey back to the Serengeti, and the cycle repeats.

Check out our Great Migration Timeline  to see how the wildebeest migration progresses over the months.

From the postcard-perfect beaches and large open skies to the majestic animals and spectacular wilderness, Tanzania offers children mesmerising sights and wildlife adventures. Tanzania is a family-friendly safari destination , but before you hop on to the plane, you’ll need to do some research.

There are some safari lodges and camps that have age restrictions for children. When you book a safari tour, discuss this with your tour operator and find out details about the restrictions; it might be a lodge or camp which only accepts children over a certain age, or it could be some of the activities where there are age restrictions such as walking safaris or game drives. Some camps offer children-specific activities for families. In terms of safety, it is quite safe to take your kids on a safari, just ensure that they listen to the guide at all times.

Even though Swahili, a Bantu language, is the official language of Tanzania and majority of the population speak it, not everyone in Tanzania speaks it. They might speak a variation of the Bantu languages as there are quite a few Bantu and Nilotic languages spoken throughout Tanzania. English is the second official language, spoken by a large number of Tanzanians – a remnant of colonial rule (formerly known as the Tanganyika territory).

Although Tanzania’s official currency is Tanzanian Shilling, which is accepted throughout the country, US Dollars are also widely accepted in a majority of tourist areas. However, the locals don’t usually accept US dollar notes printed before 2009. We recommend visitors exchange money at authorised dealers in Tanzania plus there are options to use ATMs to get the local currency. Most of the Tanzanian outlets accept Mastercard and Visa.

To make things a little simpler, we have shared a quick currency conversions (2021):

The majority of visitors travelling to Tanzania require a visa to enter Tanzania. There are certain exceptions to that rule. Visitors can either obtain a visa on arrival or get a visa prior to travel from the Tanzania Consulate in their country of residence. Some visitors (from specific countries) may not require a Tanzanian visa at all. Refer to Tanzania Immigration website for the complete list of visa-exempt countries. You can also refer to the same page for Referral Visa Cases, as it provides a list of countries that can acquire a visa on arrival. There are numerous types of visa, but visitors who want to travel to Tanzania for leisure require a Single Entry or an ordinary Visa. In addition make sure your passport has at least six months validity.

It’s unlikely that you will have to worry about transport once you arrive in Tanzania. Many safari packages include a vehicle with a driver guide who will can take you around Tanzania on your safari. The vehicle included in the package will be your primary mode of transportation together with any charter or scheduled flights to take you to remote game areas or off shore islands such as Zanzibar.

Baraza Resort and Spa

Tanzania is located in East Africa and is home to some of Africa’s most pristine wildlife sanctuaries, the second highest mountain in the world - Kilimanjaro, a massive volcanic crater, and gorgeous white sand beaches with warm turquoise waters. The plains of the Serengeti National Park offer an exhilarating safari experience with phenomenal game viewing opportunities which includes the “Great Mammal Migration” and the famous “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), whilst the tropical island of Zanzibar is a marine wonderland with its untouched coral reefs and gorgeous climate. Tanzania has a strong cultural heritage and offers visitors the rare opportunity in northern Tanzania of meeting with the fascinating Maasai people who have a great understanding of how to live in semi-arid and arid lands.

The question of when is the best time to visit Tanzania is best determined by what you wish to experience.

Tanzania has a temperate climate with relatively comfortable temperatures all year round. The main variation to the impact of the temperature is the humidity and annual rains.

Traditionally, the annual rainfall arrives around the beginning of April and continues until the end of June. The second, slightly less strong, rainy period, is from the beginning of November (around 2 weeks later on Zanzibar) to the middle of December, roughly speaking.

Although the Serengeti offers fantastic game viewing all year round, there are particular months that are deemed as the best time to visit the park. The dry season months of June through October are the most popular time of the year for a safari in Tanzania, with animals congregating near water sources and the vegetation thining; improving the visibility of animals. If you aspire to see the annual Mammal Migration , then it is best to travel during the months of June and July . In the months of December to March , the migration herds are located down in the very southern region of the park. April and May is a good time to book a safari in the northern parks of Tanzania, as the game is still good, crowds are minimal, and the prices are at the lowest of the year.

The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October during the cool, dry months of spring. Another popular time to visit this tropical island is from December to February when it’s hot and dry. The ocean temperatures are perfect for swimming, diving or snorkeling expeditions.

Mount Kilimanjaro is best climbed either between July and October or January to March .

Tanzania is a country located in East Africa and is renowned for its vast wilderness areas.

The plains of the Serengeti National Park offer an exhilarating safari experience with phenomenal game viewing opportunities which includes the “Great Mammal Migration” and the notorious “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), whilst Kilimanjaro National Park is home to Africa’s highest mountain. Offshore lie the tropical islands of Zanzibar, with Arabic influences, and a marine park which is home to whale sharks and beautiful coral reefs.

Also on the coast is the bustling city of Dar es Salaam, where Swahili culture meets a modern tropical metropolis. In the north, Olduvai Gorge is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world; an asset in understanding early human evolution. Olduvai is next to Ngorongoro Crater, a massive volcanic valley that’s a major wildlife conservation and safari area, inhabited by the indigenous Maasai, who still pursue traditional tribal practices. Lake Tanganyika is the location of Jane Goodall’s primate research center, where visitors can track chimpanzees along the shoreline.

Serengeti National Park

Located in northern Tanzania, this World Heritage Site and most celebrated wilderness area known as the Serengeti is a photographer and filmmakers dream, especially during the massive annual migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. The crocodile infested Grumeti River is a top attraction during this remarkable event; with hungry Nile crocodiles awaiting their opportunity to strike as the herds frantically cross the river. The reserve has an abundance of wildlife with the numbers estimated to be well over 3 million. There is even an active volcano within the Serengeti National Park;  the only volcano to eject carbonatite lavas that turn white when exposed to air.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area and a World Heritage Site located 180 km (110 miles) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The area is named after Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area. The crater is 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and its floor covers 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). Approximately 25,000 large animals, including the Big 5, live in the crater. The crater also has one of the densest known population of East African lions which are particularly strong in the Ndutu Lake area. It is important to note however that the Ngorongoro Crater does get very busy so we do recommend a two-night stay here.

Tarangire National Park

Often regarded as Tanzania’s most underrated national park, Tarangire is a must on a northern circuit itinerary. It is Africa’s best-kept secret, boasting a variety of wildlife and diverse landscapes. The name originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park. The river is the primary source of freshwater for wild animals in the Tarangire ecosystem during the annual dry season (July to October). Visitors to the park in the dry season can expect to see large herds of thousands of zebra, wildebeest and cape buffalo. Tarangire is notorious for its large elephant population - the largest in Tanzania. During the dry season, herds of up to 300 elephants can be seen digging in the dry riverbed of the Tarangire River looking for underground streams.

Boasting some of the finest tropical beaches in Africa, as well as world-class scuba-diving sites, we rate Zanzibar as an ideal destination for travelers seeking a blissful, barefoot-luxury holiday. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on a tropical beach, exploring the cultural attractions of Stone Town, or enjoying the many water sports on offer, this island has something for every traveler.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is a smaller park located both in Arusha Region and Manyara Region of Tanzania. The park is strikingly diverse with barren lands, forest, and a salt lake. Lake Manyara National Park is renowned for the flamingos that inhabit the lake. During the wet season, they can be found at the edges of the lake in flocks of thousands but they are not so present during the dry season. More than 400 species of birds inhabit the park making this the ideal location for bird watching. Leopards, East African lions, cheetahs, elephants, hippopotami, several antelope and many more wild animals inhabit this park and many can be seen throughout the year.

Located below Mount Meru in northern Tanzania, the charming city of Arusha is a gateway to the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara National Park, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Arusha National Park on Mount Meru. As it rests at the base of the twin peaks, Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro, the city serves as an ideal base for hikers eager to conquer Africa’s highest mountain. Arusha is known for its vibrant nightlife, Masai Market, National Natural History Museum, and traditional Tanzanian cuisine.

Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa and second highest in Tanzania, standing at 4 566 meters. The dormant stratovolcano is located 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro and is often considered by hikers as a warm-up trek for Kilimanjaro. The fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, as well as monkeys, giraffe, bushbuck and leopards.

Kilimanjaro National Park

Kilimanjaro National Park covers an area of 186 749 acres, protecting the largest free-standing volcanic mass in the world and the highest mountain in Africa, with its peak at 5 895 meters. The mountain is encircled by mountain forest. Numerous mammals, many of them endangered species, live in the park. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a lifelong dream for many, with an estimated 25 000 people attempting the climb each year. In the lower-lying areas such as the forest zone there are a multitude of birds, blue monkeys, colobus monkeys and olive baboons. Civets, leopards, mongooses, elephants and Abbott’s duikers also live in the mountain’s forest, but sightings are extremely rare. The alpine and arctic zones are too harsh for any animals to survive comfortably.

Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam, meaning “haven of peace” is Tanzania’s largest and busiest port city.

Loved amongst travelers for its seaside setting and eclectic vibe, Dar es Salaam bustles with fish markets, dhow boats, museums and striking architecture. Dar es Salaam is a diverse city with a mix of African, Arabic, and Indian cultures. Popular day trips include the beautiful Mbudya Island where you can bask on the island's white-sand beaches, snorkel, and swim in the turquoise waters. Bongoyo Island is a much-loved island getaway, lying off the Msasani Peninsula, about four miles north of the city. Located about six kilometers north of the city on the Msasani Peninsula, is the popular Coco Beach, where you can savor street food and listen to live music. The Oyster Bay Shopping Center here is a popular attraction, with farmers markets, art galleries, and boutique shops.

Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika is an African Great Lake and the second oldest freshwater lake in the world. Lake Tanganyika is home to Nile crocodiles, various turtle species, the Storms water cobra, and more than 80 species of non-cichlid fish of which about 60% of these are endemic. Most visitors choose to base themselves in the lovely lakeside town of Kigoma which serves as a gateway to the two rainforest reserves bordering the lake: Mahale Mountains National Park and Gombe Stream National Park, both of which offer unforgettable up-close chimpanzee encounters and an astonishing variety of birdlife.

Anja, our agent, was very kind and helpful all the time to organize the perfect trip. She did it quickly and efficiently. The amount of days we spent in every place was perfect to really enjoy the hotels and the different activities they proposed (in general the hotels are very nice but we don’t have the time to really experience the place but here we did). Also the selections of hotels was very very nice. Nice infrastructure, excellent service (very professional) and outstanding places to visit (all the parks were great). The best 1 day Tanzania safari tours

Price of a 1 day tanzania safari.

The cheapest 2-day budget tours start at around $240 per person. Private tours are usually more pricey than group tours where a vehicle might be shared by six to eight people.

Safari packages to the Tanzania safari span a wide price range, influenced by several variables. The biggest factor determining the price of a safari is the level of accommodation. With a one day safari, the biggest cost, given the time constraints, may be the flights in and out of the game reserve.

Tour inclusions

The following details typical tour inclusions and exclusions on the best 1 day Tanzania safari package:

Safari essentials and information

Is a 1 day safari in tanzania safari sufficient.

A one day trip is indeed short, but it can be done and you will get to see the Big 5. If you’re coming from Kilimanjaro, taking an internal flight direct to the Serengeti would be ideal, as this takes just 1 hour whilst flying from Arusha to Manyara airstrip, near the Ngorongoro Crater will take 40 minutes.

The number of days needed to properly do a Tanzania safari can range from 1-1 days to 1-2 weeks, depending on how much time and budget a visitor has.

On the safari trip, you can even break up the drive to or from any Tanzania safari park with an overnight stay in a park en route to your destination such as the Serengeti NP , the UNESCO world heritage Ngorongoro Crater or indeed Selous Game Reserve .

Or you can simply spend all of your time at one reserve where you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore the park with full-day dusk-to-dawn game drives that will include lunch at one of the picnic spots.

Overall, 1 days is a good amount of time for a safari in the Tanzania safari if it is part of a larger Tanzania tour, but if not, allocating a few more days to your safari would be ideal where possible.

Animals on a Tanzania safari?

You’ll find just about everything in the Tanzania safari! The country is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) and visitors will also find spotted hyenas and hippos.

Tanzania contains the highest concentration of lions in the world with over 3,000 of them found in the Serengeti alone and about 1.5 million wildebeests, in addition to wildebeest, gazelle, giraffes, black rhinos. A view of these huge wildebeest crossing the crocodile infested river Mara has been included in the 7 wonders of natural Africa.

If you enjoy driving, it is possible to visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on a 1 day road safari. This combination gives you a reasonable chance of seeing all the Big Five in a short time. Ngorongoro is the only reliable park in Tanzania to see black rhino in the wild.

The Serengeti and the crater are both good for predators, and lions are particularly easy to find in both. A 1 day trip to Ruaha or Selous in the south can also be very productive where you’ll see lions, wild dogs, antelopes and kudu.

What’s a must do for a 1 day Tanzania safari?

There are many 1 day safaris on offer in Tanzania, so you do have choices on what you can fit into your safari. The most-popular option is the Northern circuit which comprises 4 parks including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara NP and Tarangire National Park.

To visit all four parks in three days is not recommended and the best use of your time may be spent visiting the Serengeti and dropping into the Ngorongoro Crater en route, the jewels in the Tanzanian safari crown.

In the south of Tanzania, visitors can visit Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) or Ruaha National Park on its own as a stand-alone fly-in safari from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.

How much spending money do I need for a 1 day Tanzania safari?

Visitors should budget for approximately $300 for a Tanzania safari per person per day, including food and accommodation. Tanzania safaris can be more expensive than their continental counterparts due to the higher costs of accommodation and food.

What animals will I see on a 1 day Tanzania safari tour?

Visitors on a 1 day Tanzania safari will see the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo), hyenas, wildebeest, giraffes, cheetah, zebras, endangered black rhinos, hippos, crocodiles and much more.

What is the best time to go on a 1 day Tanzania safari?

The best time to go on a 1 day Tanzania safari is in the Dry season (from late June to October). This period offers the best wildlife viewing in general – with the wildebeest migration as its absolute highlight.

OVERVIEW – 3 DAY TANZANIA SAFARI

Let’s start this guide with all the essentials you should know when planning a 3 day Tanzania safari, from the cost to where to book the tour, and more.

WHERE TO GO FOR A 3 DAY TANZANIA SAFARI?

Many safaris in Tanzania have a specific journey that you’ll follow for 3 days.

However, if you have the option to customize the itinerary, I recommend visiting Arusha National Park, Tarangire National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater.

This is what I personally did, and I spent 1 day in each location, with each park providing a unique experience with diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes.

The highlights of my adventure included a walking safari at Arusha National Park, wildlife spotting in Tarangire National Park, and descending into the vast Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day game drive.

HOW MUCH DOES A 3-DAY TANZANIA SAFARI COST?

The cost of a safari will vary depending on your itinerary and choice of tour company, but it’s important to note that Tanzania is generally one of Africa’s pricier safari destinations.

That being said, there are budget-friendly options too.

For those on a tighter budget, you can expect to pay around $150 per person per day. On the other hand, for a more premium experience, you will find safaris for over $1,000 per person per day.

A mid-range option falls somewhere in between at around $300 to $500 per person per day.

3 DAYS TANZANIA SAFARI ITINERARY

Now that you have an overview of what this 3 day safari in Tanzania entails, let’s go further in detail with the itinerary and what to expect each day.

DAY 1: ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK

Day one of the three-day safari in Tanzania begins with Arusha National Park.

You’ll start early in the morning and leave from Arusha town to get into the national park, a gem tucked away in northern Tanzania.

I’m talking about lush rainforests, unique wildlife, and the stunning Momella Lakes. Next thing you know, you’re staring up at the rugged peaks of Mount Meru!

The first activity you can do is a 1.5-hour walking safari with a guide and armed ranger around a section of the park.

We spotted countless wildlife such as warthogs, buffaloes, baboons, and giraffes to name a few, then we continued to check out the beautiful Tululusia Waterfall.

After the walking safari, you’ll visit the stunning Momella Lakes filled with pink flamingos, and then stop for lunch at a picnic site overlooking Mount Meru.

The safari continues with a 2-hour game drive through the park and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the black and white colobus monkeys swinging through the treetops.

You might even spot a shy bushbuck as well as herds of buffaloes and giraffes that rule these plains.

Arusha National Park was an exceptional start to the 3 day safari in Tanzania, and I couldn’t have asked for more.

ANIMALS IN ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK

Arusha National Park isn’t the most diverse in terms of animal species, but you’ll surely see some unique wildlife.

Here are some common animals you’ll spot;

  • Black and White Colobus Monkeys : Known for their black and white fur, you’ll see the monkeys swinging through the treetops.
  • Bushbucks : These shy, solitary antelopes are known for their beautiful markings and can often be spotted hiding in the underbrush.
  • Pink Flamingos : The Momella Lakes are a haven for these vibrant birds, creating a stunning spectacle as they wade in the shallows.
  • Buffaloes : Traveling in large herds, buffaloes are often roaming around and you’ll love photographing them.
  • Giraffes : With their long necks and distinctive spots, giraffes are a highlight you’ll see, often seen peacefully munching on acacia trees.
  • Zebras : These iconic African animals add a touch of wild beauty to the landscape.
  • Baboons : You definitely won’t miss the baboons on your safari in Arusha.
  • Leopards : Though rare, Arusha National Park is known for occasional leopard sightings.

Remember, every Arusha National Park safari is unique, and nature operates on its own schedule.

You’re 99% guaranteed to spot lots of animals, but keep in mind that no guide can guarantee any sightings.

DAY 1 ACCOMMODATION

In the late afternoon, you’ll be transferred from Arusha to Tarangire National Park for a short game drive through the park while on the way to your accommodation.

Inside the national park, there are half a dozen accommodations available and we personally stayed at the beautiful Ndovu Tented Lodge by Nasikia Camps .

Ndovu Tented Camp offers an enchanting setting to unwind after the day’s adventures and you’ll even be able to spot wildlife right in front of the camp.

DAY 2: TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Day 2 is spent exploring the stunning Tarangire National Park, one of the best places to take a safari in Tanzania.

From the stunning landscapes to the abundance of African wildlife, you’re in for a treat!

Tarangire is known for its large number of diverse wildlife, particularly during the dry season. But the park is mostly known for the elephants.

In fact, Tarangire boasts more African elephants per square kilometer than any other national park in the country!

But that’s not all – keep your camera handy because you’re also likely to spot zebras, gazelles, giraffes, lions, and even cheetahs.

A full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park is exactly what you’d come to Tanzania for!

Here are the amazing animals you can expect to see on safari;

  • Elephants : Tarangire is famous for its large elephant herds.
  • Lions : Known as the ‘king of the jungle,’ Tarangire is the right place to spot them in the wild.
  • Fringe-eared Oryxes and Gerenuks : These antelope species add to the park’s diversity.
  • Zebras and Wildebeests : Watch out for these iconic African animals, especially around the Tarangire River during the dry season.
  • Giraffes : With their long necks reaching up into the tree canopy, they’re hard to miss!
  • Hyenas and Leopards : Keep an eye out for these predators lurking in the shadows.
  • Bird Species : With over 550 bird species, you’ll be in heaven if you like bird watching.

Generally speaking, there are many animal species to see in Tarangire and this is exactly why I recommend packing your best camera gear!

DAY 2 ACCOMMODATION

In the late afternoon, you’ll be transferred from Tarangire to Ngorongoro Crater and spend one night at an accommodation to relax before your last day on safari.

Around the crater rim of Ngorongoro, there are a few accommodations available and we personally stayed at the beautiful Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp .

Intimately set in an ancient acacia forest, Ngorongoro Tented Camp has 10 spacious tents featuring two queen-size beds, roomy en-suite bathrooms, warm winter-weight duvets, and gas heaters to ensure a cozy night’s sleep.

Guests can also enjoy a sundowner while sitting around the campfire, and dinner and drinks are included for all guests.

DAY 3: NGORONGORO CRATER

The third and last day of this 3 day Tanzania safari is spent inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, mostly known for the Ngorongoro Crater.

Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera, and is home to over 25,000 animals – yes, you read that right!

You’ll start the day early and descend into the crater where you’ll be greeted by an incredible lush, fertile landscape teeming with life.

After driving around and taking hundreds of photos, you’ll head to the lakeside where you’ll have a delicious picnic lunch with your guide.

Post-lunch, you’ll resume the game drive for another hour before exiting the crater and making your way back to Arusha town to conclude this incredible 3 day Tanzania safari.

ANIMALS IN NGORONGORO NATIONAL PARK

A safari in Ngorongoro Crater offers an incredible opportunity to see a wide variety of African wildlife in one place.

Below are some of the key animals you can expect to see;

  • The Big Five : Ngorongoro is one of the few places in Africa where you can see all of the “Big Five” – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino.
  • Hippos : The crater’s lakes and swamps are home to large populations of hippos.
  • Zebra and Wildebeest : These two species are among the most common in the crater, and you can often see large herds roaming around.
  • Giraffes : While not as common as in other parks, giraffes can still be spotted.
  • Antelopes : Several different species of antelope live in the crater, including gazelles.

BEST TIME TO TAKE A 3-DAY TANZANIA SAFARI?

The best time to take a 3-day safari in Tanzania largely depends on the weather and the wildlife you want to see.

The dry season, which runs from June to October, is generally regarded as the best time for safaris.

During this time, the weather is cooler, and wildlife tends to gather around water sources, making it easier to spot animals.

That being said, for those interested in seeing newborn animals, January to March can be a great time for a safari.

WHAT TO PACK FOR A 3-DAY TANZANIA SAFARI?

Here is a quick overview of what to pack for a 3 day safari Tanzania;

Clothing: Comfort is key on a safari. Pack lightweight cotton clothes, long-sleeved shirts, and pants to protect against mosquitoes. I suggest packing layered clothing, as mornings and evenings can be cool while days are warm.

Footwear: Comfortable shoes like trainers are recommended.

Essentials: Don’t forget your sunscreen and hat for protection against the sun. Also, carry a day bag for your everyday essentials.

Camera Gear: A camera with extra memory cards, batteries, a power bank, and a charger will help you capture the best memories from your trip.

IS THERE WI-FI ON THE SAFARI?

If you have a local SIM card, the mobile network is relatively consistent throughout Tanzania.

This means that you will be able to use your mobile data for browsing the internet, posting on social media, and staying connected as a whole.

The safari vehicles are also conveniently fitted with a Wi-Fi dongle.

Some lodges inside the park offer free Wi-Fi and most hotels in cities and towns also have Wi-Fi available for guest use.

Yet, keep in mind that you’re in a remote location and the connection might not always be strong.

3 DAYS VS 5 DAYS SAFARI IN TANZANIA

Choosing between a 3-day and a 5-day safari in Tanzania depends on several factors, including your budget, the time available, and what you want to experience.

I have personally done a 3-day safari in Tanzania as well as a 5-day safari and there were several differences.

A 3-day safari is a more condensed experience that allows you to explore some of Tanzania’s most famous parks. It’s perfect if you’re short on time or working with a tighter budget.

Typically, a 3-day safari can include visits to Arusha, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro. That being said, the tour operator you’ll book with will probably offer customization of the itinerary, just like I did with Altezza Travel.

A 5-day safari offers a more relaxed pace and a broader range of experiences. You can visit more parks, such as Serengeti National Park in addition to Tarangire and Ngorongoro.

You’ll have more time to observe the wildlife, take photographs, and soak in the natural beauty of the landscapes.

Note that the Serengeti is one of the largest national parks in Tanzania, and you’ll need 2-3 days to explore it, so a 5-day safari is a better option.

All in all, both the 3 days Tanzania Safari and 5 days Tanzania Safari have their perks.

There's no denying it, a safari anywhere is an expensive trip – and a safari in Tanzania is at the pricier end of the spectrum. When you're coming this far and spending this much, you'll want everything to be just right.

But with so much to weigh up (and with much dubious advice to be found online), planning and booking a safari can feel a little daunting. Start by deciding where and when you want to go, then you can drill down into the finer details.

Camping safari or lodge? Group vs private tour? National park or private reserve? A lot of these questions are a function of your budget, but feat not, we've got you covered – read on.

How to book a safari in Tanzania

Everything you wish you'd known before you booked, how many days do you need for a tanzania safari.

If you’re travelling from Europe or further afield, aim for at least a week. A typical two-stop safari trip might be three nights in the Serengeti and three nights in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area – three nights tends to be more relaxed than two which only gives you one full day at a camp. Account for a possible overnight in Nairobi or Dar es Salaam, depending on your international flights.

Ten days to two weeks is a good amount of time if you’d like to add on a beach break in Zanzibar and if you’re thinking of travelling further afield around the country – for example, combining the north and the south, or adding a chimp trekking experience.

For a Kilimanjaro summit, you’ll need at least a week factoring in arrival and departure days, and up to 12 days depending on the route you take – remember the shortest routes can be risky due to lack of time to acclimatise to the altitude. If you add a two- or three-night safari, you’re looking at around two weeks. Make it three weeks for the full Kili climb, safari and Zanzibar beach package.

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

For all-inclusive safaris, consider a starting point of USD $4,000 per person for a seven-day trip, and upwards from there for more days or more luxury. If you do not mind longer drives and low- to mid-range accommodation, you may be able to drive that down to $2,500.

You can reduce costs by travelling out of season. Head to the Serengeti outside peak season (July to September) and you’ll find reduced rates on safari packages and a less crowded experience.

The more you spend on your safari, the more exclusive and diverse your experience tends to be. Fancy accommodation is not necessary, but the more expensive properties often offer a broader range of activities such as night drives and walks if they’re in a private reserve as opposed to a national park—which also means fewer other tourists—and excursions such as community visits.

Bear in mind that camps and lodges book up quickly, particularly during the peak river crossing months of July and August. It’s best to book your accommodation a year ahead if you want to see the river crossings.

Where to stay on a Tanzania safari

Park or reserve.

National parks are run and owned by the government, whereas private reserves are privately owned and managed. Typically, staying in a private reserve will be more expensive.

One of the main differences from a tourism point of view is exclusivity, as private reserves are not usually open to day-trippers.

Private reserves also usually have strict rules about the amount of vehicles around an animal sighting – usually a maximum of three. In a park like the Serengeti, you could find dozens of vehicles packed around an animal sighting.

However, national parks are generally much larger with a broader range of terrain and you can often self-drive.

National parks have more rules: access only between sunrise and sunset, often no walking safaris. Whereas a private reserve makes their own rules, so you can usually do activities such as night drives and bush walks, and you might be able to drive off-road to get closer to a sighting.

A game reserve like the Selous may be also managed by the government, but it’s specifically for sustaining game and there are usually fewer rules than national parks – often this is because of hunting activity.

Camping safari or lodge?

Generally, camps refer to tented structures, whereas lodges are permanent buildings.

Camps range from very basic fly camps, as used on multi-day walking safaris, to luxury camps with large, canvas-tented en-suites, four-poster beds and private plunge pools. There will usually be a main mess tent or a building where meals are served, possibly with a communal lounge area.

In the Serengeti, it’s common to find mobile camps that move with the wildebeest migration – they’ll be a little simpler, without any permanent structures, such as pools, but many of the top-end ones are still remarkably luxurious.

Many people prefer camps for a more ‘authentic’ safari experience and being able to hear hyenas whooping or lions roaring in the night (canvas tents are perfectly safe: it’s extremely rare for any large animal to try to enter a zipped-up tent).

For those who might be a little nervous, a lodge with proper walls may feel more secure. Lodges also tend to come with more luxuries; a gym, swimming pool or a spa, though there are plenty of basic mid-range ones, too.

Private safari vs group tours

In Tanzania, there are many available options for group tours and private safaris, depending on your travel style and budget. You can also self-drive in some parks, but you may miss out on a lot of information and insider knowhow without a guide.

The main difference between a private safari and a group tour is exclusivity. In a group safari vehicle, especially the less comfortable and more cramped minibuses, you sometimes have to fight for space and compete with the demands and interests of other safari-goers. However, it is significantly less expensive and you’ll be with like-minded travellers with whom you can share your safari experience.

In a private safari vehicle, either self-guided or with a guide, you can design your own programme and stop wherever you want, for however long. Your guide will be able to give you a much more intimate experience, answering your questions and trying to meet your specific requests, whether that’s looking for a certain animal or simply lingering longer at a viewpoint. With so much to see and experience, you might find it’s worth the extra money.

Good to know

One thing to note is the lack of guiding regulation in Tanzania: there’s no official organisation to grade and certify safari guides as in other countries. If you’re hiring a private guide, it is worth checking out some online reviews first.

How to choose a safari operator and accommodation

With thousands of companies out there, choosing a safari operator or camp can be overwhelming.

You can book everything yourself or through a tour operator or travel agent who will package the whole thing up for you, including transfers and flights. It might end up costing you more with their service fees, but for many it will be worth it, as safaris with multiple camps can be logistically complex.

Choosing your accommodation will certainly be easier if you book with a tour operator or travel agent who has visited the camps and can offer first-hand information about the properties. But there’s also a wealth of information online if you do your own research and know what to look for.

Many people opt for word-of-mouth recommendations. There are dozens of websites that list safari trip reviews, but also look to family and friends who will give you an unbiased assessment. Don’t pay too much heed to glossy magazine award lists; these are usually linked to PR budget or the connections of the owner.

Look at an operator or camp website and try to find some information on the company – for example, do they value sustainability and responsible travel? If they do, it should be stated on their site with some explanation. Do operators work exclusively with eco-friendly camps and lodges (and how do they assess that?); do they invest a portion of their profits in communities around national parks? Do camps use solar power and employ local workers? One thing you may want to consider is whether the camp or operator is locally owned to support Tanzanian entrepreneurs and business owners.

Then the practical considerations: If you’re booking a group trip, find out how many other people you'll be travelling with. If you’re staying at a camp, ask if the safari vehicles are private or if you’ll be sharing with other guests (if you have children, you may have to book a private vehicle). Is the vehicle closed (these are common in Tanzania) or open-sided? If you need to work or connectivity is a must, do they have WiFi?

Then the bottom line: Find out exactly what’s included – the top camps will include everything excluding tips and top-shelf alcohol; at others, you may have to pay for all your drinks. Find out what their payment policies are, including deposit, cancellation and refund terms and conditions. Factor in tips, which are ideally paid in cash (it differs depending on camps, but most mid- to high-end camps suggest tipping your guide around $10-20 per person per day and camp staff collectively $5-10 per person per day).

What to expect on safari

A typical day on safari will start early, before sunrise. After a coffee or maybe breakfast, you’ll head out on the morning game drive – there are two game drives a day, one in the morning, one in the late afternoon when animals are more active. Drives usually take around three hours, possibly more. Some camps even prepare a packed lunch so guests can stay out all day. It’s common to stop for a coffee break in the bush – a welcome chance to stretch the legs.

Back at camp, you’ll have breakfast or brunch and then you’ll have some hours to relax – read a book, swim in the pool if there is one, take a nap, have some lunch, before afternoon tea around 4PM and the evening game drive.

It’s common to have sundowners (a gin and tonic is the classic) in the bush as the sun is setting. Then it’s back to camp for drinks around the fire and dinner. Many camps have communal dining, with guests sitting together, often with a guide or host. Most people tend to hit the hay early in preparation for another sunrise start.

Tanzania safari FAQs

What passport/visa documents will I need?

At the time of writing, a visa on arrival is available at the Tanzanian border for UK citizens; you can also use their e-visa service to apply in advance, which you’ll need to use if you require a multi-entry visa. All people travelling to Tanzania require a passport that’s valid for six months beyond the intended length of stay. The entry requirement for any traveller entering Tanzania is a minimum of two blank pages in their passport. Don’t forget to bring your yellow fever vaccination certificate as they may check it at the border if you’ve recently been in an affected country. Always check with the appropriate authorities before travelling, as requirements can change.

Am I guaranteed to see the migration in action?

Nothing is guaranteed on safari and it’s best to go with low expectations, so everything you do see is a welcome surprise. The herds migrate around the Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara throughout the year, but most people think of the migration as the river crossings that take place between roughly June and October, depending on the rains. It’s worth noting that herds are known to gather on the river banks for hours or even days before they make a move – so, as with most safari sightings, it’s very much about being in the right place at the right time. The best advice is to not make the river crossings a sole reason for travel, but rather an added bonus if you do see one.

Do safari camps/lodges have water and power?

No matter where you stay, there will always be access to water and usually electricity. If you’re in a luxury lodge you have nothing to worry about, and even the most remote mobile bush camps have surprisingly sophisticated setups. The tent might be equipped with a simple ‘bush shower’, consisting of a shower bag, but the water can be heated.

Bush camps are often run by a generator that is turned off at night, so it’s a good idea to charge your batteries before going to bed. Many safari vehicles have chargers, giving you the chance to top up your batteries during the game drives.

In Tanzania, the power sockets are type D and G. The standard voltage is 230V and the standard frequency is 50Hz.

What are the vehicles and guides like?

Safari vehicles differ slightly in East Africa to Southern Africa in that they are not all open-sided Land Cruisers or Land Rovers. You’ll see many closed 4x4 vehicles, which are more suited to driver-guides who need to drive on roads outside national parks; they often have a pop-top, so you can stand up. The higher-end camps will usually have a fleet of open-sided vehicles that stay in the parks, which are much better for safari.

Most of the drivers are full-time safari guides – but note there is a not a standardised safari guide qualification in Tanzania. However, some of the top safari companies do have their own safari guide training programme in lieu of an official certification. Generally though, guides will be familiar with the routes, wildlife and knowledgeable of the area’s geography. Don’t be afraid to ask questions – it’s a good way to get to know your guide and for them to gauge what you’re interested in.

Will I have a chance to interact with local people?

Many tour operators and accommodations provide opportunities to visit local villages. For a relatively small fee you can go on a half-day tour, often with a local guide who can explain the culture and act as a translator for your questions. Included in the fee is also the opportunity to take pictures, but you should always ask permission first.

Be aware: Many of these excursions feel like being on a ‘human safari’. Be respectful and ask yourself if you would enjoy foreigners walking around your hometown taking photos of you or your children. These visits can be a good way to support people financially, so try to buy any handicrafts on sale, such as jewellery.

Often a less awkward way to learn about a culture is to take part in an activity – for example, honey hunting with the Hadza, which some camps help organise, or taking a bush walk with your Maasai guide.

Can I take my children on safari?

A family safari is a wonderful way to learn together, though it’s probably not best suited to babies or toddlers. Always check with your lodge or camp before booking, as some of them do have age limits or may ask you to book a private vehicle. Camps that are family-friendly may have babysitting services or specific activities for children. Bush walking is usually for over-16s only.

Will I have to carry lots of cash?

On safari, almost all expenses (meals, activities and often drinks) are covered in the cost of accommodation, which you’ll usually have settled before travelling. If you do need to pay on site, Visa and Mastercard are usually accepted but check before you travel. Tips are usually paid in cash – ideally in the local currency, but US dollars and sometimes Euros are accepted (and easier to get prior to travel).

Are safaris dangerous?

Generally, no. The wildlife you’re likely to encounter on safari will be habituated to the sound and appearance of safari vehicles. You’ll be given a briefing before your first game drive – be quiet around the animals, don’t stand up or get out of the vehicle unless your guide says it’s safe to do so. Though wild animals can never be entirely predictable, attacks on humans are extremely rare on safari. At reputable camps and lodges, the guides are trained to read animal behaviour and on a walking safari, they’ll be armed – though this is a last-ditch precaution and very rarely needed.

At your tented camp or lodge it won’t be uncommon for wildlife to wander through, as there are usually no fences, so never venture outside your tent or room when it’s dark without your guide.

Are antimalarials and vaccinations required in Tanzania?

Probably the most important health consideration is malaria. It’s recommended that medication be taken as a preventative measure (ask your doctor or at your local travel clinic), but don’t forget to wear long trousers and sleeve shirts especially at dawn and dusk. Camps usually have mosquito nets and bug repellent, but it doesn’t hurt to bring some of the latter with you as well.

Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A and tetanus (ask your doctor, health advice may change according to the individual). You may need a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you’ve recently been in a country with a risk of transmission.

Medical facilities are limited and medical care can be expensive, so make sure you have adequate health insurance.

What food is served on a safari?

Food is a central element to the safari experience – prepare to eat a lot.

The food served at most up-market safari lodges and camps is of high quality, some with set menus that wouldn’t look amiss at fine-dining restaurants, plus fresh bread and pastries, soups, salads and ice cream.

At most camps, the day starts with tea or coffee and biscuits, with breakfast or brunch before or after your game drive – expect cereals, fruit, bacon, eggs, sausage and toast to be offered. Lunch will likely be a light(ish) meal: chicken and salad or maybe quiche. Before your afternoon activity, there will be some light sweet and savoury snacks, maybe samosas and brownies. Dinner will usually be a three-course affair, with a starter followed by a meat, fish or pasta dish, and something like a slice of cake for dessert.

Is the water safe to drink in Tanzania?

Camps will have purified water for you to drink, either in sealed plastic bottles or, preferably, filtered water in reusable glass bottles. Don’t drink the tap water, though using it to brush your teeth will be fine for most people.

Is there internet access while on safari?

Internet access is now available at many lodges and camps, sometimes for a small fee. Expect it to be slow and potentially unreliable. When on game drives you’re not likely to get a signal, but your guide will be able to communicate with the lodge using their radio. Think of a safari as a chance to unplug.

What to pack on safari in Tanzania

Keep it minimal, especially if you’re travelling on light aircraft flights that have strict weight limits (usually around 15kg per person in a soft-sided bag).

Keep in mind that the midday sun can be brutal, but the early morning game drives can be very chilly. It’s important to bring layers. Pack light, loose clothes that are comfortable. Earth-toned colours are preferred, as brighter hues and stark whites can startle some animals—the aim is to blend in with the environment.

Wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap: A good sunhat or cap that keeps the sun off your head and face is very important, especially when spending so long outdoors.

Light, long sleeve shirts: Great for keeping you warm on an early morning safari and for protecting you from both the sun and mosquitos.

Walking shoes: A sturdy pair of shoes or trainers that can survive a bush walk are well worth investing in. Make sure you break them in before using.

Rain jacket: Bring a light waterproof jacket, especially if you’re travelling in the rainy season.

Binoculars: Although your guide will have a pair, it’s nice to have your own to ID a mysterious shape on the horizon or if you’re into birding.

Other essentials:

  • Sunscreen and toiletries (though many camps will have the basics)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera and extra memory cards
  • Electrical converters and chargers
  • Flashlight/head torch
  • Painkillers and malaria medication
  • Cash: US bills newer than 2006, Euros, or use an airport ATM to get local currency on arrival
  • Fleece layer/down jacket
  • Long trousers in earth tones
  • T-shirts and tank tops
  • Casual evening wear

What you need to know about travelling to Tanzania

1. what to pack.

Are you ready to immerse yourself into our fantastic itineraries? Would you like to spend your honeymoon on a safari in Tanzania and Zanzibar? Then you absolutely have to think about what to pack. To protect yourself from the sun and insects, it’s absolutely important to bring along sunscreens with high protection, alongside a high-coverage insect repellent. As a precaution, it is advisable to bring generic drugs; in addition to those you may take regularly (antipyretic, broad-spectrum antibiotic, intestinal disinfectant, eye drops). For safaris, wear light, easily washable items of clothing, a windproof jacket and pullover for early morning activities, as well as sunglasses, a sun cap, a scarf or bandana for the wind, and comfortable sneakers. Long trousers and long-sleeved t-shirts are recommended as they deter insect bites. Download our easy-to-use Check List with gear and clothing to pack for a safari in Tanzania.

2. Cost of touring in Tanzania

All our different safari itineraries in Tanzania include numerous services that are already included in the displayed prices. The only expense not included is the cost of air travel to Tanzania.

However, the cost of travelling to Tanzania may depend on several factors. In fact, the prices of itineraries in Tanzania range from 700€ to 3000 €, depending on the number of days you book and the type of lifestyle you intend to sustain. So if you’ve been wondering how much a tour in Tanzania costs , the answer is: “about 300 € a day”.

For Safari Avventura, payment is made by bank transfer after contacting our staff, with whom we will organise the trip.

3. How we plan your trip to Tanzania

At Safari Avventura we take care of all ground services , assisting travellers from the moment they arrive at the airport, providing full board, a personal guide who speaks Italian and English, private use of a jeep (with power outlets, fridge with cold drinks and snacks, binoculars), and select accommodation.

4. Necessary passports and visas

Foreigners entering Tanzania must be in possession of a passport valid for at least 6 months. The passport must be presented with an ordinary visa to an immigration officer at any point of entry. The “ordinary visa”, which is normally required for tourist visits, can be requested, before departure, in the country of origin at the Tanzanian Embassy, or directly upon arrival in Tanzania, at a control point, after completing a form, where you will be asked, among other things; flight details, passport number and information, and you will have to pay 50 USD (approximately 42.40 €). No photo is required for this visa type.

5. Vaccinations in Tanzania

For safaris in Tanzania there are NO mandatory vaccinations required. Hepatitis, typhoid and malaria prophylaxis are recommended. If necessary, consult your doctor or the ASL.

We recommend using an insect repellent and mosquito net to avoid insect and mosquito bites. There aren’t many mosquitoes, especially during the dry season, and the probability of contracting diseases is really low, but it is important to be cautious and avoid any risk. Vaccination for yellow fever is not mandatory, except for those coming from endemic areas, such as Kenya, for which it will be mandatory.

How to Book a Safari / Tour in Tanzania

How to Book a Safari / Tour in Tanzania  : Tanzania, a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful and diverse attractions such as Mount Kilimanjaro , the world’s free standing highest mountain, the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti National Park, the beautiful beaches of Zanzibar, cultural diversity, and a large number of wild animals, is one of Africa’s most visited country. As a result, many people who want to visit Tanzania ask themselves how they can book and pay for their trip to this incredible tourist destination. Booking a safari or tour in Tanzania is quite straightforward and just requires a few steps. However, there are a few things you should know and ask yourself before making a booking so that you may pick the right place with the right tour company to make your safari more interesting.

After deciding on Tanzania as the destination for your safari , the next step is to figure out how to book a safari in Tanzania . The finest safari activities, the best time to travel, how much to spend on a safari, where to stay, and how to get there are all questions you’ll need to ask yourself before deciding to book for Tanzania safari .

With the advancement of technology, there have been many types of internet fraud and theft, and if you’re not careful, you could end up booking with companies that don’t exist and are only there to steal your money after you’ve made a booking and payment, and then you won’t see them again. To stay secure, make sure you book with Tanzania tour companies that have been approved by the Tanzanian government to operate in the tourism industry. We’ll show you the basic things to consider when booking Tanzania safaris to avoid all of the fraud and theft and make your booking simple and successful.

Where to go in Tanzania, what to see, what to do?

This is the first question you should ask Yousef and learn before buying and booking a Tanzania safari . There are numerous tourist spots where you can travel after making your booking, but it all depends on your interest in things to do and to see in your safari/ tour to Tanzania. If you’re interested in wild animals, birds, unique vegetation, and other flora and fauna, Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, which includes Arusha National Park, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Serengeti National Park, is the best place to visit and book.

If you prefer beaches, Mwanza city, Tanga city, Dar es Salaam city, and Zanzibar island all have exciting beaches to meet your expectations, but if you prefer physical features, you can book for Kilimanjaro national park to see Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru in Arusha national park, waterfalls in the Kilimanjaro region, and Lake Manyara national park to see the rift valley in Lake Manyara, among other places.

After learning and knowing about the attractions and where to go, you must ask yourself, “What am I going to do?” Tanzania has a diverse range of tourist sites as well as a diverse range of tourism activities to fulfill the needs of all types of visitors. Walking safaris, wildlife drives, hot air balloon safaris , cycling, canoeing, diving, hiking, and cultural tours are just a few of the activities available.

Another step you should take is asking when to go.

After determining where to go and what to do in Tanzania safari/ tour, the next question to consider is when to travel to Tanzania. Remember that some of the attractions and costs vary by season in Tanzania; for example, during the dry season, from late May to almost October, it’s the peak tourism season in Tanzania, and it’s easy to see wild animals, as well as a good time for hiking and beaching, but safaris are expensive because the number of tourists visiting and booking for Tanzania is high, and some tour companies tend to raise the package costs and accommodations as well. So, probably this is the best time for luxury visitors and not budgeted visitors.

In the low season, the number of people visiting Tanzania is low, most national parks , tour companies , and accommodations provide discounts and charge low rates because supply exceeds demand. So, be aware that the time of year you want to visit Tanzania has a greater impact on your safari than you realize, and to be aware of this, you should be clear about your budget and what you want to see and do in Tanzania before making your reservation/booking.

When should you book your safari (early or late)?

It is always advisable to book a year in advance. You can, however, book your safari up to a month before your departure date. This will mostly depend on the number of people in your group, the time of year you plan to go on safari, and the lodging alternatives you select. The secret is to choose your lodging carefully; the top hotels and resorts are usually fully booked well in advance so it’s better to make boking early so as to get a best accommodations. As a result, if your tour company has a large group, you should book ahead of time. Booking late may also cost more than booking early, so it’s best to schedule your Tanzania safari as soon as possible.

Understand your financial situation.

This is the most important thing to know before making a reservation/ booking in Tanzania safari because your budget will influence all of the above factors. Knowing your budget will also help you decide when to travel based on your budget (high season requires more money than low season), as well as what type of accommodation you will stay in.

Tanzania safaris are not expensive, but they can be if you choose to be. The cost of your trip to Tanzania is determined by several factors, including the number of days you plan to stay in Tanzania, the number of people in your party, the season, the type of accommodation you choose, and the attractions and activities you plan to see and do. The cost of a Tanzania safari might start at USD 200 per day and go up from there. It’s therefore preferable to know your budget so that you may book an appropriate tour operator, sights, and lodgings depending on it.

Choosing a Safari Company

After you’ve figured out all of the above, the next and most crucial step is to choose your tour company. Remember, this is the most critical stage, and you shouldn’t rush it unless you want to wind up hating yourself. There are over 100 tour companies in Tanzania , so choose carefully when booking your Tanzania safaris because some of them are not registered with Africa Tour Operators, Tanzania Association of Tour Operators, ATTA etc, and hence are not permitted to enter the national park. If you want to go on a Tanzania safari , ask your friends and family about their own experiences. They can tell you the best safari destinations and tour operators to avoid in order to make your trip successful.

Consider using TripAdvisor , Africatouroperators, travel blogs, and reviews to choose the best destination, Tour Company , and lodgings for your family. Ask fellow travellers any questions you may have, and if feasible, contact them on social media so as you can ged an advice to book for tanzania safari . This is the simplest approach to choosing the finest tour company, destination, and accommodation for your Tanzania safari booking.

After you’ve learned about your tour operator, you can ask them how to pay and put money in their account, and you can nearly guarantee that your Tanzania safari booking will go off without a hitch. It’s critical to ask questions before you go. Make a note of your worries, and then seek answers from your travel agency or trip operator. Make a note of their responses so you can refer to them when traveling. Before making a final payment, insist on reading the cancellation policies thoroughly.

After finding and booking a suitable tour company for Tanzania safaris and tours , the last thing you need to do is book your flights to Tanzania , obtain a Tanzania VISA, and complete some vaccinations and health requirements in order to avoid any unnecessary disruptions once you arrive in Tanzania.

To book Tanzania flights, go to the website and search for direct flights that land in Tanzania. There are international airports in Tanzania that accommodate international flights, including Kilimanjaro internal airport, Julius Nyerere international airport in Dar es Salaam, and Abeid Ahmed Karume internal airport. Most international airlines fly to and from Tanzania, including Emirates, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines.

It is also simple to obtain a visa in Tanzania. Visa applicants in Tanzania can now apply for an online visa, which will allow them to book a Tanzania safari and visit the United Republic of Tanzania (both Mainland and Zanzibar). Applicants must fill out the required information and submit their application online (www.immigration.go.tz). After you submit this, your visa will be evaluated internally and processed within 7 days.

12-Day Kilimanjaro-Tanzania Wildlife Safari

Ultimate guide for planning tanzania kilimanjaro safaris.

The Kilimanjaro are very popular mountains not just in Tanzania, East Africa, Or Africa but world over being that it’s the tallest mountain Africa .

Some people only know the Kilimanjaro for its part in several movies and documentaries. When one picks interest in the Kilimanjaro, they would want to know how it was formed , where it is found, how tall it is and many other questions.

Kilimanjaro Meaning – Meaning of the word “Kilimanjaro”

Kilimanjaro Meaning – Meaning of the word “Kilimanjaro”

The question mostly asked but has never gotten a good answer is the origin of the name “Kilimanjaro” . It is believed that the Kilimanjaro name has roots in Swahili, Chagga and Masai languages.

There has been however no conclusive research to ascertain this claim.

The Nuttall Encyclopaedia was the first official document in the year 1907 to refer this mountain by then as the Kilima-Njaro.

There is no clear origin of this name but from the time the Europeans started exploring the Kilimanjaro in the 1860s, the mountain adopted this names somehow.

In 1885, Jim Thompson claimed that Kilima-Njaro that the locals believed that this name was interpreted as the mountain of glory (kilima) (njaro).

“Njaro” in one Kiswahili dialect means shining which is asserted that it was to refer to the snow on the top of this mountain.

There are a group people that claim the word “kilima” means mountain in Kiswahili. However the actual word means “hill”. “Mlima” is the actual word to mean mountain in Kiswahili.

The Chagga people who are the natives of the area are credited for naming the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks of the Kilimanjaro.

  • I have been on two glamping safari trips in Africa on two very different budgets.
  • My all-inclusive stay was great but my cheaper glamping experience was fine, too.
  • Private game reserves are actually the most important thing to splurge on, not accommodations.

I've been on two African safari trips . Both involved glamping but on completely different budgets.

My first more affordable trip, a lodge in South Africa with separate safari excursions, cost me about $1,100. My second, an all-inclusive lodge in Tanzania, cost me about $4,000 after a 50% off deal.

Here's how the two compare and what I think you should look for before you plan an African safari .

My affordable safari experience was at Jackalberry Ridge, where some tents cost $80 a night.

I stayed five nights near Kruger and one night in Johannesburg before my flight home. I spent around $1,100 for lodging, safari tours, a rental car, and food (not including flights).

After landing in Johannesburg, I rented a car ($130 for five days) to drive to my lodging in Marloth Park, a town bordering the edge of Kruger National Park.

I was staying at Jackalberry Ridge , a self-catering accommodation with no on-site restaurant, no room service, and limited housekeeping.

The one-bedroom tents at Jackalberry Ridge go for as low as $80 a night, and two-bedroom tents go for $135.

When I checked in late, there was no one at the reception desk — just an envelope with my name on it containing my keys and a map.

For my next safari trip, I leveled up.

I saw a Travelzoo deal for an all-inclusive safari at Taasa Lodge , a five-star luxury safari in Tanzania.

The deal was $6,000 for two people for a whole week — the lodge is usually $12,950 for two for seven nights. It was still a splurge, but I'd be saving more than 50% on a bucket-list experience.

The package came with seven nights of lodging, two safari activities a day, three daily meals, and drinks.

Still, we spent more than the original advertised price. There are obligatory "daily government park fees" and "daily concession fees" that added about $893 per person to our bill.

We also had to take a regional flight to get to Taasa, which was more expensive than my rental car in South Africa.

To redeem the Travelzoo deal, we had to complete our booking through a specific travel agency.

We ended up opting for an all-inclusive add-on package which includes the $893 fees above, domestic airfares from Arusha to Taasa (which would already cost around $600), and our agency arranging our Tanzanian tourist visa and airport transfers. The add-on also included extra activities at the resort (more on that later).

Overall, we paid $1,715 per person on top of the $3,000 each for the lodge stay.

I hadn't anticipated paying so many extras, but it was nice to have someone take care of the logistics of getting to the resort.

On one day of the trip, we had a special bush breakfast. It was one of the extra activities we got with that special add-on package.

Instead of our usual safari breakfast, we had freshly prepared omelets in the wild.

On most safari days, the car stops (when guides think it's safe), and people go behind the car to do their business.

This was the only time we had this portable toilet while out on a safari. On my budget safari day trips at Kruger, we'd have to wait until we reached a rest-stop facility.

Again, we spent a lot of time watching lions.

My big takeaway is that it's really worth paying to be inside a private reserve.

What’s Next for Jane Goodall? An Immersive Spectacle in Tanzania.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream” is going up in East Africa, where visitors can experience the primatologist’s scientific breakthroughs (complete with termite mound).

By Ralph Blumenthal

Are you ready for the Jane Goodall Experience?

It’s getting ready for you.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream,” an immersive spectacle by former Walt Disney Imagineers and African artisans celebrating the groundbreaking English primatologist and environmental activist, is taking form in a cultural complex in Tanzania.

Its debut, in the safari gateway of Arusha, between Mount Kilimanjaro and Serengeti National Park , is planned around World Chimpanzee Day, July 14, 2025 — 65 years since Goodall, then a 26-year-old novice researcher chaperoned by her mother, landed at the Gombe forest reserve to begin her field work for the anthropologist Louis Leakey .

Within months she upended scientific doctrine by observing an adult male chimp she called David Greybeard raid a termite mound, stripping leaves from a hollow branch to extract and eat the insects. The making and using of tools was long thought a hallmark of humans.

Since then, the nonstop Goodall, who turned 90 on April 3 during a typically exhausting American tour, has been lionized (or aped) in books and movies. She’s a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a United Nations Messenger of Peace. And champion of a global crusade of young people and celebrities from Prince Harry to Leonardo DiCaprio fighting deforestation, climate change, pollution and factory farming.

Her nonprofit Jane Goodall Institute in the U.S. is projected to raise $30 million this year, with additional millions raised by the other 25 chapters worldwide, a spokesman said. Her youth movement, Roots and Shoots, is operating in 70 countries.

But she has never been presented like this — in an immersive tribute by African artists and Disney veterans. Disney has called Imagineering the “blending of creative imagination with technical know-how.” But “Dr. Jane’s Dream” is not a Disney project; rather, it taps into storytelling techniques by some of its former innovators.

At “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” Goodall said in New York last week, “There’s a tent where my mom and I were and two little peepholes looking out into the world of the chimps.” Visitors will be challenged. “They go into this dream world and are going to have to investigate. It’s like an adventure.”

Goodall is now on one of her globe-circling jaunts that keep her on the road some 300 days a year. She flew in from the West Coast at the end of March and after Canada and a few days back home in her native Bournemouth on the English Channel, she is booked to Europe, Africa, Australia, South America and Asia.

Since Jan. 12, she calculated, she has slept in her own bed five nights.

On April 2, Goodall was on East 54th Street at the Hotel Elysée with its Monkey Bar — a coincidence, she insisted — along with the fact that her top floor suite had been the last abode of the playwright Tennessee Williams, who died there in 1983 at 71, choking on the cap of a bottle of barbiturates.

Her latest project, “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” is unfolding at the Arusha Cultural Heritage Center, opened in 1994 by Saifudin Khanbhai, whose great-grandfather from India established a trading outpost in British colonial Tanganyika in the 1800s.

Khanbhai offered Goodall a location on the five-acre heritage site, amid a complex of half a dozen buildings and four huts displaying the work of some 3,000 artists and jewelers and showcasing the region’s unique blue gemstone, Tanzanite.

“We just connected so well,” Khanbhai said in an interview. “I’m a man of chemistry. If it works it works.”

Her building’s shell of round drumlike forms is already up, with the interior exhibits coming over the next year.

“Basically, she is getting the deep storytelling, design and immersiveness of Disney Imagineering because — well, we adore Jane,” said Tom Acomb, an architect with his own firm, AOA, and a former Imagineer who teamed up with colleagues including Joe Rohde , creator of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in Florida, to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars of free design services for “Dr. Jane’s Dream.”

But Acomb said, “Disney has nothing to do with the project, nor is any technology of theirs deployed in any way. What is in the mix is a process — the process that was unique to Disney Imagineering’s ability to tell a story.” He said they still did support work for Disney when called upon.

The idea, Rohde explained, was to create “much more of an experience center than an expository center.”

“What we’re trying to do,” he added, “is sort of take all the feelings and emotions that made Jane Goodall Jane Goodall and transfer that into a series of objects and encounters.”

It was not so much “about” Goodall, he noted, as “feeling her.”

He said it would feature a kiosk with a recording of Goodall translating chimp cries into English; a ceiling of 800 leaflike tiles painted by various African artists, models of animals wrapped in information about them (requiring close study by visitors, just as Goodall had to closely study her subjects); and elaborately carved and painted tree trunks in a style of artmaking called Makonde .

And, of course, the famous termite mound.

“Rather than just telling people that this is the way chimps fish for food,” Rohde said, “we want to compel people to do something like what the chimps do — use these little probes to stimulate something within the termite mound. You’re not learning about what chimps do — you’re learning what they do.

“It’s a very Jane Goodall thing.”

To keep “Dr. Jane’s Dream" maintainable locally, it will limit fancy technology, and allow for improvisation, Rohde said.

“It’s going to be what it becomes as the artists make it.”

Born in London in 1934, Goodall grew up cherishing animals, even, as a not-yet-2-year-old, taking earthworms to bed with her. Her mother, Vanne, convinced her that the worms would do better in the ground. At 4½ she lost herself in the henhouse trying to figure out where eggs came from.

Her parents separated when she was little and, amid Nazi bombings, she relocated with her mother and younger sister to her grandmother’s home in Bournemouth. The first book she read was “The Story of Dr. Dolittle,” about a country physician who talks to the animals. Another early book, “Tarzan of the Apes” left her jealous, she remembers: “He marries the wrong Jane.”

Set on visiting Africa, Goodall saved her waitressing money and, at 23 in 1957, sailed to Kenya where, though lacking a college degree, she sought out Leakey who with his wife, Mary, was excavating early human fossils in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania.

One day at the site, out walking with another assistant, Gillian Trace, and the Leakeys’ two protective Dalmatians, Toots and Bottom-Biter, Goodall noticed they were being trailed by a young male lion. The dogs, off leash, were busy chasing a mouse.

“Gillian wanted to hide in the vegetation at the bottom of the gorge,” she recalled last week. “I said no, the lion would know where we are, we won’t know where the lion is. We have to climb up on the plains so the lion could see us. I had this firm belief that animals wouldn’t hurt us if we are not a threat to them.”

Goodall said she was less worried about the lion than coming back to Mary Leakey without the Dalmatians.

Afterward, Louis Leakey, impressed, offered her a job studying chimpanzees for clues to man’s earliest ancestors. She became one of his three ape mentees, “the trimates,” who also included Dian Fossey on gorillas and Birutė Galdikas on orangutans. Fossey would be murdered in Rwanda in 1985.

Goodall returned to England but sailed back to Africa with her mother in 1960 to begin her research in Gombe, on Lake Tanganyika.

Alone in the jungle with only their cook, both were felled by malaria. Her mother nearly died. “We just lay in our beds and handed the thermometer back and forth,” Goodall recalled. Somehow, without quinine, they recovered.

She tried repeatedly to make contact with the chimps but they remained aloof, as recorded by an old movie camera she propped up in a tree fork.

Until, after nearly four months, David Greybeard let her get close enough as he made his tool of the tree branch.

“It was held in the left hand, poked into the ground, and then removed coated with termites,” she recorded in her field book. “The straw was then raised to the mouth and the insects picked off with the lips, along the length of the straw, starting in the middle.”

Goodall said she knew immediately that her breakthrough would thrill Leakey. He cabled back: “Now we must redefine ‘tool,’ redefine ‘man’ or accept chimpanzees as human.”

But Goodall also observed the primates in warfare and cannibalism — along with manifestations of empathy and communal rearing of offspring orphaned by poachers. At a waterfall, she observed chimps dancing as if in religious awe.

Sergio Almécija , senior research scientist in primates and human evolution at the American Museum of Natural History, said Goodall revolutionized the way we understand primates and other animals — “like the transition from radio to color TV.”

Starting in 1961, Goodall returned periodically to Cambridge for what became four years of doctoral studies in ethology. “I was told you must focus on feeding behavior or maternal behavior, but not everything,” she recalled.

She focused on everything. She also rejected complaints that she was giving names, not just numbers, to her chimp subjects and recognizing their humanlike traits.

When National Geographic sent a renowned Dutch wildlife photographer, Baron Hugo van Lawick, to Gombe in 1962 to document an irresistible story — a young Englishwoman among the apes — a romance blossomed. They married in London in 1964 and had a child, Hugo Eric Louis, nicknamed Grub. (Now a house builder in Africa and Latin America, he has two sons and a daughter, Goodall’s grandchildren, who work on some of her projects.)

A slowdown in assignments sent van Lawick in search of work in the Serengeti and he and Goodall divorced in 1974. A year later she married the Tanzanian national parks director, Derek Bryceson . He died of cancer in 1980, when Goodall was 46.

In 1986, she helped organize a conference in Chicago, and was shocked to learn how deforestation and pollution were decimating animal populations.

“I went to the conference as a scientist and I left as an activist,” she said.

After revelations of terrible conditions at the Brazzaville zoo in the Republic of Congo, she persuaded the American oil company Conoco to help build a chimp sanctuary in that country. She convinced leading research laboratories like Harvard’s that chimps, after all, made poor models for medical experimentation to benefit humans. Many long-captive animals were released to sanctuaries (though ape-trafficking remained rampant).

She widened her focus to human behavior as well, and became a vegan. “How can we even save the precious chimpanzees,” she asked, “when people all around are struggling to survive?”

Some of her favorite stuffed animals that she carries around in her hand luggage sat last week on a mantle in her New York hotel room: Mr. H, a monkey from a blinded United States Marine, Gary Haun, who became a proficient magician, skier and sky diver; Pigcasso, a South African pig taught to create artworks with a paintbrush in her mouth; an octopus from the movie “My Octopus Teacher”; and Rattie, an African pouched rat trained to detect land mines.

Two other items were away on display at a National Geographic Museum traveling exhibition called “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall” — a piece of the Berlin Wall and a limestone rock from Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island prison.

All symbols, Goodall says, of her mantra — hope.

“I’m seeing humanity as at the mouth of a very long dark tunnel,” she said, “and right at the end is a little star — that’s hope. But in order to get there we’ve got to roll up our sleeves and climb under and crawl over all the obstacles that lie in the path, like climate change, and loss of biodiversity. And a very important one is poverty. We must alleviate poverty because really poor people destroy the environment to survive.”

In her hotel suite, the living room lights and brass chandelier were lit. A photo of Tennessee Williams glistened in a vitrine.

Goodall was in a bedroom, resting her eyes from her travels and lectures into the spotlights. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the chandelier began to sway.

Goodall didn’t seem surprised to hear of it. Once, she said, staying in another suite on the same floor, she had seen an apparition.

Did she believe in a hereafter?

There’s either nothing or there’s something, she said. Finding out the answer would be “the next great adventure.”
