Ceci was awesome! Would highly recommend this tour. It takes you to residential neighborhoods no tourist will ever end up at by chance to admire amazing street art (also the company organizing the tours is the same organizing some of the street art projects happening in those places)

Had a great tour with Cecilia!

The cool thing about this tour as well is that you visit areas that you would most likely not visit otherwise. It was a great introduction to Buenos Aires street art, and a great way to catch a glimpse of real life in the city. Thanks so much!

Buenos Aires Graffiti Tour

  • 9.50 / 10 4 reviews | 25 travellers It was great, Juan was very knowledgeable and super nice. So far the best tour I've done in Bs As, and I've done a couple already...I highly recommend it. 10 Sonya
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the service starts

The Buenos Aires graffiti tour serves as an introduction to the artistic, political, and revolutionary mix of the Argentinian capital via its stunning and thought-provoking murals.

Graffiti in the flea market

The Palermo area of Buenos Aires is, as well as being the largest neighbourhood in the city, also its most artistic. It is home to the Museum of Latin American Art, artisanal markets selling artworks and more, and a fantastic collection of murals and graffiti.

It's from Plazoleta Julio Cortazar , home to some of these delightful markets, that you'll begin your tour of the city's most impressive graffiti, passing through Palermo's Roussel and Santa Rosa as well as Gorriti and Lavalleja in search of the best street art in the city.

Your local guide will explain the long connection between this art form and the city itself: from the early 20th century, when painters would be paid to daub the walls of the city with a variety of political slogans , to the arrival of the aerosol can in the 1960s, repression under the dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s and the revival of the art form since.

From 2014, with the worldwide proliferation of graffiti as an art form, the city government has invited local and international artists to decorate the streets of Palermo, resulting in an explosion of colour. See murals by  Grolou and Dame, Adrián Escandar and Alfredo Segatori , as well as the Worldwide Wall (a different kind of street art based on stickers, and an international collaborative effort).

Throughout your guide will immerse you in the graffiti culture of the city, as you marvel at works which twist reality, integrate native culture, and bring colour and life to the city.

The tour comes to an end around 5 pm, on the corner of Gorriti and Lavalleja.

The art of the oppressed

The best photos of the graffiti in Buenos Aires. The Argentinian street art has a complex history and a unique style.

Buenos Aires graffiti tour

The two bears tower above me but, thankfully, are oblivious to my presence. They’re each five metres tall but they’re still, silent and just stare at each other. I’m safe.

Minutes earlier, two wolves had looked like they were about to attack each other, claws outstretched and fangs bared while, once again, I looked on.

And earlier in the afternoon I had gazed into the eyes of a tiger with rage in its face.

Walking the streets of Buenos Aires, the images of the animals leap out from the walls of the buildings as you pass by. Although painted, they still feel alive. They’re joined on the facades by the quirky, the abstract and the angry.

For in Argentina, graffiti is everywhere and has been embraced by the community.

It has been taken to a level above petty vandalism. In the art, are meaning and an expression from the heart.

In the art, the people find their voice, “the voice of the oppressed”, as it was explained at one point.

When Argentina emerged from the vices of a military dictatorship in the 1980s, graffiti blossomed as the restraints on free expression were lifted.

There were interpretations of political messages but also a celebration of art for art’s sake.

When the economy of the country crashed in 2001, the creative set again took to the streets to transform the city into a gallery.

Graffiti art of Buenos Aires

In the neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires around Palermo and Colegiales, colours explode from the walls of houses, shops and government buildings.

The paintings are technically allowed on public spaces and, when it comes to private buildings, many owners are happy to host the art.

Across the suburbs are diffused faces of coloured spectrums; abstract children of origin and intent unknown; and familiar shapes colliding with others to form a twisted mesh of meaning.

It’s possible to walk the areas on your own but in this case I was invited on a tour by local organisation graffitimundo which specialises in telling the stories behind the artwork.

There are the tales of the police shootings that led to one of the largest designs on the streets; the young man who was rejected from using a space until his mother went and asked on his behalf; and even the art theft scandal when graffiti was lifted straight off the walls.

The word ‘graffiti’ is used a lot but most of the painters prefer the term ‘street artist’.

Graffiti is for the naïve, their spray cans and their elementary tags. The real artist creates with meaning.

As our tour guide, Ana, put it: “We are a young democracy and it’s important to be able to express ourselves”.

The political stands alongside the fun, though. The angry and the colourful coexist in the community because they’re both saying something.

One of the most interesting things to hear about is the ‘conversations’ that occur between the artists. In this context, the conversation happens on the wall.

“Artists know they give their work to the street,” Ana explains.

“This is art for the community.”

And so others often expand on the works. Through small additions and slight alterations a discussion is born from the art.

The conversations and discussion help bring it all to life. The pictures of the bears, the wolves and the tiger may have been benign but there is an energy within them.

When you hear the stories behind the artwork, you can see the intensity of their existence.

THE BEST ACCOMMODATION IN BUENOS AIRES

If you stay close to the city centre of BA, you’ll be near many of the main sights and have easy access to other neighbourhoods.

buenos aires graffiti tour

For a backpacker option, Che Juan Hostel is modern and comfortable with good privacy.

With great value and a central location, River Hotel is a good option if you’re on a budget.

buenos aires graffiti tour

For true style, I would recommend BE Jardin Escondido , which is where Francis Ford Coppola stays.

And when it comes to the top end, the Palacio Duhau – Park Hyatt is the ultimate in luxury!

Time Travel Turtle was a guest of graffitimundo but, as always, all opinions are his own.

This looks like a must-do in BA–hope I get a chance to do it in December! Thanks for the inspiration!

Definitely worth doing if you have time in BA. I’ll be around the city for another couple of weeks so let me know if you need any advice for your trip.

For me, graffiti is a beautiful street art that is used to express the artist’s feelings about everything they experience with the things around them. Those artworks are beautiful because I believe that each of them is meaningful.

Yeah, the meaning behind the artworks really makes it more beautiful. Getting a better understanding is a great way to truly appreciate them.

In Baires there are a lot of graffitis, it’s impressionant. Fuet-i-Mate

Yes, it’s great, isn’t it?

I recommend everybody visiting Buenos Aires to consider BA Street Art Tours as it will be really a great experience. Moreover, if you’re lucky, you can have the chance to see an artist at work! –  Lucia Esposto, Italy

Having written a book on street art in BA you would be hard pressed to find a guide more in touch with what’s going on. I work with a lot of street artists in London and it was refreshing to come half way round the world and see such passion here! If you choose any tour make sure it’s this one. –  Sam Mills, London

We saw a very different side of Buenos Aires that most tourists probably wouldn’t even think to see. I’d recommend it to everybody who is living here, or just passing through. – Andrew Gardiner, Australia

If you have an interest in art of any kind then I can’t recommend this tour highly enough. It was fascinating and the guide’s enthusiasm and huge knowledge of his chosen subject made the tour one of the best experiences of our month-long trip. – Fiona and Trevor Wilson, Scotland

This tour leaves at 12 PM from Balcarce 1016 – Casa de Castagnino – San Telmo .

Highlights:

  • Meet your guide over empanadas and wine
  • Think outside the box about what is art

Why choose this Experience?

At Biking Buenos Aires we believe that by creating a common reality, the world will enjoy more love, harmony, and respect. Our purpose is to reveal our connected uniqueness, so we´ve designed an experience focused on a universal subject: art.

In a city like Buenos Aires you can’t settle for a general peek behind a glass window! Go beyond in this cultural experience on two wheels. We´ll ride by some working-class barrios and reach an urban oasis where art transparently tells about the lives of the locals, their pains and dreams.

We facilitate interactive activities in order to create lasting memories and relationships. On this XP, we´ll put our hand to work and make our own artwork.

Spark interesting and intellectual conversations about art, dreams, and desires with us, and discover the city in a fun and interactive way.

Who is this Experience for?

Our Hidden Graffiti Experience is ideal for an artistic, adventurous traveler who is looking to discover the city´s rougher edges in a fun and interesting way.
