Weather in the Maldives

  • Month-by-Month Breakdown
  • Frequently Asked Questions

The Maldives is one of the world's most picture-perfect luxury travel destinations. To experience the idyllic tropical scenes you've no doubt admired, the best time to visit the Maldives is in the "dry season" from December to April. Not surprisingly, this is also peak season when rates skyrocket. Therefore, if budget is an issue, traveling at a different time may be preferable. You should plan your visit according to the various things to do in the Maldives . Most people are willing to pay the higher prices for good weather, as outdoor activities are limited when it rains. However, one of the benefits of visiting the Maldives during the wet season are the dramatic sunsets after the rain clears.

The weather in the Maldives is split into two distinct seasons by two monsoons, in which the wind changes to the opposite direction.

  • The dry northeast monsoon from January to March. This is labeled the "dry season" but it doesn't mean it won't rain. The reality is that the weather is more stable and there's less chance of it raining. Short afternoon and evening showers are frequent in the southern atolls. If you really want to avoid the rain, your best bet is February and March in the northern atolls. December and April are considered transitional months between the monsoons.
  • The windy, wet southwest monsoon from mid-May to November. This monsoon is characterized by intense stormy periods that can be brief or last for a few days followed by perfect sunny spells. The weather is unpredictable and the conditions can alter at any minute, although it tends to rain more at night during the wet season. The transitional months from October to early December can be particularly unsettled, with quite a few bursts of rain, before the season transforms completely.

However, it's important to keep in mind that the islands in the Maldives are situated over a considerable distance of more than 800 kilometers (almost 500 miles) from north to south. This means that the weather will vary across the country, and even from island to island in the same area. The southern atolls receive more annual rain than the northern atolls. Yet, rain tends to be less frequent in the southern atolls during the wet season, as they're less exposed to the southwest monsoon. As a result, they're sunnier and not as windy.

What doesn't vary much is the temperature in the Maldives, due to the country's location right on the equator. It stays warm throughout the year, with average temperatures rarely dropping below 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) at night or rising above 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius) in the day.

The level of humidity also remains constant, and high, at about 80 percent. The water is warm too, with an average temperature of about 82 degrees F (28 degrees C).

Find out more in our detailed guide to the weather and climate in the Maldives .

There are some extra things to consider if you're planning on scuba diving in the Maldives , which has some of the most remarkable dive sites in the world. In particular, visibility and marine life change according to the season.

Visibility is generally superior in the dry season , and is especially good along the northeastern atolls during that time. February is the pick of the months for diving there. However, the wet season is a better time to see sharks and manta rays, especially on the southwestern side of the Maldives (around South Ari Atoll) from May to October. The manta rays are attracted by the plentiful availability of plankton to feed on.

If you're lucky, you might get to see a whale shark. The Maldives is one of the few places on earth where this is possible. These massive sharks are mostly found on the western side of the Maldives from May to December, and on the eastern side up until April. The protected area off the coast of Maamigili Island in South Ari Atoll has whale shark sightings year-round.

Unfortunately, getting to the Maldives from the U.S. is quite an ordeal as there are no direct flights. Be prepared for travel to take a considerable amount of time (up to 30 hours) and money (from about $1,200 if you fly out of a major international hub such as New York, Boston, or Los Angeles). If you have limited funds, you may want to think about going to the Maldives for a couple of weeks during the cheaper, wet season rather than going for just a week during peak season.

Prices for accommodations in the Maldives generally drop substantially at the start of May, on the fringe of the low season. It's often the case that the weather is still decent then, as the wet season doesn't set in until the second half of May. Plus, if you have your heart set on a certain resort in the Maldives, the low season will make it more affordable.

May and June tend to be the cheapest months, with deals for over-water bungalows at top-rated resorts running up to 50 percent off high season prices. Do compare prices (including flight prices) though, as they rise during summer break.

The most popular islands in the Maldives book up well in advance during the high season. While flash sales and last-minute offers come up throughout the year, these are more common for the commercial mass-market resorts. Of course, this isn't an issue if you're flexible in regards to your accommodations and travel dates. If you can drop everything and book within six weeks of travel, you may be able to score yourself a super deal as resorts (even the top-end ones) constantly adjust their prices to maximize occupancy levels. So, make a note of a handful of resorts you're interested in (here are some really beautiful hotels or take a look at the Maldives Tourism website for inspiration) and monitor them.

The fact that accommodations are spread over many islands in the Maldives means that it never feels too crowded there, even during peak season.

January is a very popular time to visit the Maldives, as people want to escape the winter at home. Prices are especially high over the New Year period. Make sure you book well in advance. The weather stabilizes in January, resulting in mostly calm and clear sunny days. While you can expect about three rainy days during the month in the north, this increases up to 10 days in the south.

Events to check out:

  • Huravee Day is a tribute to Sultan Hussain Izzuddin, who freed the Maldives from brief South Indian occupation in 1752. It features traditional music, food, and dance. The date is based on the Islamic calendar and varies each year, but it's always celebrated on the third day of the sixth month which generally falls in late December or early January.

February is regarded as the driest and least humid month to visit the Maldives. Statistically, the north only experiences a couple of rainy days during the month. The number of rainy days in the south also drops to about five, and these are usually short showers in the southeast part. Prices are high, reflecting the fact that it's peak tourist season.

  • Valentines Day: Many resorts offer special (and costly!) romantic packages for Valentine's Day.

The number of rainy days remains pretty constant in the north but starts to rise to an average of eight in the south. Again, the rain is usually restricted to short bursts that bring relief from the heat, rather than lengthy downpours. The surfing season gets underway in the Maldives in March. Some resorts offer special deals, as peak season winds down later in the month.

The temperature and humidity are slightly higher in April, as the transition from the dry northeast monsoon to the wet southwest monsoon commences. This produces a lot more rain, consisting of afternoon showers that increase in frequency from mid-month. The number of rainy days per month averages about six in the north and 12 in the south. Keep an eye out for additional special deals, as long as you avoid traveling around Easter.

  • Ramadan: The Maldives is an Islamic country and the holy month of Ramadan begins early April in 2022 (the exact date varies each year according to the Islamic calendar). Resort islands aren't affected but restaurants will be closed on local islands, as Muslims fast all day.

Resorts drop their prices in early May. The southwest monsoon usually arrives in the Maldives during the second half of the month. It reaches the southern part of the country first and proceeds north. The second half of May can be particularly wet, with high possibility of storms and whole days of rain. Diving visibility is reduced. Ramadan concludes on Eid in early May 2022, with families gathering to feast.

The southwest monsoon covers the whole country by early June. Expect quite a lot of clouds, morning and evening drizzle, and some torrential downpours. Resorts continue to offer discounted rates to entice guests. If you're planning to visit the Maldives in June, the southern atolls are preferable. The number of rainy days per month jumps to as many as 18 in the north, compared to only 10 or so in the south. Sharks and manta rays are a draw for scuba divers in the south.

The rain continues similar to June but eases off slightly in the north during July, bringing the number of rainy days down to about 15 or 16. The south experiences a couple of extra rainy days throughout the month though, averaging around 12. Rates can be higher in July, as families go on summer vacation. This month is great for surfing, as the storms produce reliable big swells.

  • Independence Day (July 26) marks the day the Maldives gained independence from the British in 1965, after 77 years of protection. Cultural events take place across the country.

August is another popular off-season month for summer vacation in the Maldives, which may result in fewer discounted deals. The number of rainy days continues to reduce slightly in the north, especially towards the end of August. However, it remains constant at about 12 in the south. Downpours are short and heavy.

The weather in the Maldives is quite unpredictable in September. It can rain heavily, or alternatively you may get only an hour of rain some days. There are less tourists, and this is reflected in discounted rates for accommodations. The number of rainy days is about the same in the north and south, averaging around 13 during the month.

  • National Day celebrates the end of 15 years of Portuguese occupation in the Maldives, in 1573. The date is set according to the Islamic calendar and varies each year. In 2022, it falls on Sept. 27. There are patriotic parades and marches throughout the Maldives, especially in the capital city Male.

The wet southwest monsoon begins to withdraw in October, producing unsettled weather. The number of rainy days jumps to an average of 15 in the south, exceeding that in the north. The surfing season draws to a close in October. It's also the final month for good sharks and manta ray sightings in the south. Expect rates at top resorts to rise towards the end of October.

The swap in wind direction, associated with the transition from southwest monsoon to northeast monsoon in November, reduces the number of rainy days in the north to about eight. It remains high, at about 15, in the south though. There are heavy downpours that tend to pass quickly in the afternoons. This is the last month to find a cheap deal (if you're lucky) before peak season really kicks in.

Events to check out :

  • Victory Day (Nov. 3) commemorates the defeat of an attempted coup by a terrorist group from Sri Lanka in 1988. A military march, drills, traditional dances, and processions are held in Male.
  • Republic Day (Nov. 11) marks the day Sultanate rule was replaced with a republic government in 1968. Marching bands and vibrant parades are highlights in Male.

December is the start of the "dry," peak season in the Maldives. You'll still get some rain at the beginning of the month (and it can be heavy at times) before the weather transforms completely. However, it lessens in the north as the month goes on. Many tourists visit the Maldives for the Christmas-New Year period. The resorts hold special buffets and gala dinners for these occasions. In addition to super high prices, it's common for resorts to have minimum stay length requirements.

  • Fishermen’s Day (Dec. 10) honors the country's fishermen, who contribute greatly to the economy. Educational and fun events about traditional fishing are organized. You'll be able to devour delicious seafood too!

If you want good weather, visit during the dry season from December to April. However, prices are at their highest during these months.

The Maldives are expensive year-round, but September is the best time to find deals on flights and hotels. However, it's also the peak of the rainy season and the weather can be unpredictable.

The monsoon season begins mid-May and lasts until November. During these months, rainstorms are frequent and can last a couple of minutes or a couple of days, but the weather during these months is sporadic.

When is the best time to go to the Maldives?

First things first: there's not really any such thing as a bad time to visit the Maldives . Whether your holiday to the Indian Ocean’s pièce de résistance is a romantic escape, a getaway with friends or a solo adventure, you're in for an incredible experience.

That said, it’s worth spending a moment researching the advantages of visiting during specific times, maybe to optimize amazing wildlife sightings or find the best snorkeling conditions. Our seasonal guide to the Maldives will ensure you don't pick the wrong month for a relaxing honeymoon or miss out on the underwater experience of your dreams.

All that’s left for you to decide is  which island is right for you . Just a word of warning – with 1192 to choose from, this is easier said than done…

January to March is the best time for fantastic weather

If warm weather and sun-drenched beaches are a priority, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Maldives in January, February or March. These months fall outside the monsoon period and are typically when the islands get the most hours of sun. Full disclosure – monsoon season tails off in late November but this is when prices start to creep up due to the demand for winter sun holidays, while rates also get higher closer to Christmas.

Another reason this is an excellent time to visit is because this is when the water is at its clearest and calmest – the snorkeling and diving are fantastic. Atolls such as the Raa Atoll, famous for its diverse marine life and spectacular coral formations, are great destinations to check out at this time of year. But if you’re a beach bum who prefers to stay close to their sun lounger, you’re also in luck – on average you can expect around nine hours of sunshine during these months, while humidity levels remain low and average temperatures hover around 29°C (84°F).

April to August is a great time to bag a bargain

Late April is when the first showers of the year start to appear but April to August is still a wonderful time to book a holiday to the Maldives, simply because it’s one of the cheapest times to visit. Even with the higher chance of rainfall, you’ll still enjoy between seven and eight hours of sunshine every day.

It’s worth bearing in mind that if you’re a keen snorkeler or scuba diver, water visibility is often reduced during these months (although the average sea temperature at this time – a bath-warm 30°C (86°F) – means it’s still a fantastic time for a dip in the ocean). This is an excellent season for travelers with a limited budget – airfares and resort rates are significantly lower and resorts are less crowded. Finding a spot at the bar from which to soak up those gorgeous sunset views won’t be a problem and complimentary room upgrades are more likely.

Don’t forget that the Maldives isn’t just about the great outdoors, either: resorts offer a staggering range of activities (most of which don’t depend on the weather) and there are often more on offer between April and August, ranging from cookery masterclasses to art workshops. Fancy embracing paint power? Cora Cora Maldives , on the Raa Atoll, is a great option and runs a series of art classes with a local artist who daubed his beautiful designs onto the resort’s villas.

A surfer rides a waves.

June and July are when to hang ten in the Maldives

June and July are ideal months to try surfing in the Maldives because this is when the waves are at their highest. A growing number of resorts now have surf schools, although one of our favorite spots is Laamu Atoll. This is where you’ll find the Six Senses Laamu , which was one of the first resorts in the Maldives with a surf school. Generally, the northern and central atolls are the best destinations for surfing in the Maldives.

July is the perfect time to join in with Independence Day celebrations

The Maldives’ Independence Day is on July 26 and parades, parties and cultural performances transform this island nation as everyone celebrates together, with some of the most colorful celebrations held at the country’s resorts. Typically, there’s a wider range of cultural activities for guests to enjoy around this time, whether it’s masterclasses led by traditional lacquer artists or lessons in leaf-folding, which involves creating elaborate sculptures from palm leaves. Trust us – your average piece of Japanese origami will look rather plain after this.

Independence Day is also a great time to sample local cuisine, as many resorts will roll out special celebratory menus. Highlights will often include delicious cakes adorned with the colors of the Maldivian flag (the cutting of this cake is usually one of the most important events) and there will be endless opportunities to sample traditional dishes such as saagu bondai bai , a delicious sago dessert made with coconut milk, rose water and cardamom.

A person diving alongside a manta ray in the Maldives

October and November are brilliant months for wildlife spotting

Yes, there’s a higher risk of rainfall and thunderstorms during these months, but they’re generally short, sharp downpours. You can expect between six and eight hours of sun a day, while the mercury will hover around 27°C (80°F). The major advantage to visiting at this time of year is the wildlife-spotting opportunities. Whale sharks and manta rays are regularly sighted as they feast on plankton. For some of the best sightings head to the Raa Atoll – this is a prime manta-spotting territory, and the northern tip’s proximity to the Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) ramps up the wow factor.

If seeing the region’s marine life is a priority, stay at a resort that operates conservation programs or other schemes designed with wildlife in mind. The InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort , for example, is regarded as one of the best places to see manta rays. But don’t just take our word for it – this is where UK-based charity The Manta Trust chose to set up its first base in the Maldives, and visitors can sign up for a wide range of manta-themed activities, including manta-spotting snorkeling excursions and presentations about the charity’s work.

December means plenty of opportunities for festive fun

Yes, December is one of the more expensive times to visit the Maldives, but we’re firm believers this period should never be ruled out. It’s a fantastic time to spot marine life and the region’s resorts go all out when it comes to festive fun. At the Hard Rock Maldives and the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort , for example, Santa typically makes regular visits on his jet-ski, and almost every resort will drape its palm trees with fairy lights.

One way to offset the higher prices is by opting for a resort that can be reached by speedboat (the cost of which is normally included in the room rate), rather than a more expensive seaplane journey. Weather-wise, expect around seven hours of sunshine a day and daytime temperatures of around 29°C (84°F). Sea temperatures are slightly cooler, but still hover around a perfectly pleasant 20°C (68°F) – the ideal temperature for a post-Christmas-dinner dip in the ocean, we reckon.

This month is also a sweet spot between the peak tourist season and the onset of the monsoon, ensuring a more tranquil experience. While the Maldives in late April can get slightly more rainy than at the beginning of the month, this is still a great time to visit.

Because the Maldives weather in April is hot, opt for breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to stay cool. The main attraction here is the water, so definitely bring your swimsuit. Don’t forget sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and high SPF sunscreen to shield against the intense UV rays.

For romantic evenings, pack resort-chic attire and include comfortable footwear for strolls on sandy beaches. It’s also wise to bring an umbrella or rain jacket for pop-up thunderstorms.

Visitor Arrivals: Are the Maldives Crowded During April?

November and April are considered the shoulder seasons in the Maldives, so it’s a great time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds. While the Maldives is not entirely devoid of visitors in April, this month is definitely a quieter period compared to the winter months. Resorts and attractions are generally more accessible and affordable, so you can enjoy the pristine beauty of the islands without hoards of visitors.

The Maldives is nothing short of an island paradise, with over 1,100 islands to choose from! Start with Maafushi, which boasts incredible beaches and fantastic resort options. Head to Thulusdhoo for an atmosphere that feels a little more off the beaten path.

Fulidhoo, a tranquil island, offers serene beaches and a glimpse into Maldivian village life. For underwater enthusiasts, Ukulhas has thriving coral reefs and abundant marine biodiversity. Plus, it’s considered one of the area’s most tourist-friendly islands.

Dhigurah, known for its long sandy stretches and personalized island retreats, is fantastic for visitors who want to connect with nature. Of course, you can’t go wrong with Male, one of the most popular islands in the Maldives.

Best Maldivian foods to try in April

Maldives Food

Maldivian cuisine is all about fresh seafood, local ingredients, and flavorful spices. Mas huni is a must-try – this traditional breakfast dish is made with tuna, coconut, onion, and chilli, best enjoyed with flatbread.

Garudhiya, a fish soup, is another popular choice, made with rice, lime, chilli, and onions. You can also try Fihunu Mas, a whole grilled fish seasoned to perfection. If you’d rather take a break from all that seafood, sample some kukulhu riha, a braised chicken in a delicious coconut sauce. For dessert, order handulu bondibai, a sweet and sticky rice pudding.

Maldives in April Travel Tips to Remember

  • Bring USD: Although the official currency of the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa, most prices are in USD, which is accepted almost everywhere – unless you’re on the local islands. If you want some of the local currency, get it before leaving the airport, as ATMs are hard to come by in some of the more local destinations.
  • Bring fins for snorkelling: Many resorts charge rental fees for snorkelling gear, so bring your own equipment if you can!
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen: Sunscreen is expensive in the Maldives, so be sure to bring a few bottles of your own! Investing a few extra dollars in reef-safe sun protection can help the environment immensely during your trip.
  • Practice modesty: While you can wear a bikini at the resorts, the local islands expect you to wear modest clothing. This is a Muslim country, so be respectful by dressing appropriately.
  • Do not bring alcohol with you: You could be fined by customs if you bring alcohol into the Maldives. The only place where alcohol is allowed is in private resorts – but don’t worry, there’s no shortage of beverages at the all-inclusive resorts!

Why visit the maldives in april.

Wonderful and beautiful underwater world with corals and tropical fish in the Maldives in April.

April is an incredible time to visit the Maldives, with beautiful weather and many attractions and activities.

  • Superb Underwater Visibility: Crystal-clear waters and excellent visibility make April an ideal time for diving and snorkeling. Algae blooms, which can cause the water to appear green or cloudy, are less common in April as the water temperatures are still relatively cooler, reducing the likelihood of significant algae growth and maintaining clearer water. While there are many islands that provide excellent snorkeling and diving experiences, some of the top spots for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts in the Maldives include the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, South Ari Atoll, Felidhoo Atoll, Fotteyo Kandu and Addu Atoll.
  • Manta Ray and Whale Shark Encounters: April marks the peak season for manta rays and whale shark sightings in the Maldives. These filter feeders follow their food sources, and the prevailing winds also affect their movement. Although manta rays and whale sharks can be spotted in the Maldives all year round, during the peak season of April the wind blows from the northeast, making Raa Atoll, South Male Atoll, Farikede Faru and Addu Atoll the best places to go to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The opportunity to swim with manta rays and whale sharks is often considered a rare and exceptional experience. Seize this chance while you visit the Maldives to appreciate the wonders of the marine world and create cherished memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.
  • Festivals and Events: The Maldives celebrates Ramadan starting from the end of March and extending throughout April. The country comes alive during this holy month with an atmosphere of devotion and togetherness. Ramadan in the Maldives offers a glimpse into the deep-rooted traditions and values of the Maldivian people paired with lively cultural performances and music. Head to Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa for a range of events throughout April, from full moon BBQ buffet dinners and retro DJ parties to live rock ‘n roll music concerts and Easter Sunday special cocktails & mocktails.

The Maldives is a destination that has a starring role in many vacationers’ dreams. White sand, crystal clear water, and a remote location make it an exotic playground that many of us have at the top of our bucket lists.

When planning a trip to the Maldives, there are a lot of things to take into consideration, including what resort you’ll stay at, how you’ll get there, how much money you plan on spending, and of course, what time of year you want to visit.

While the Maldives is a year-round destination, there are 2 distinct seasons that offer different benefits and drawbacks. In this guide, we’ll explore the best times to visit the Maldives, both by season and by interest. So, if you’re wondering about the best time to visit the Maldives for snorkeling or the best time to visit the Maldives to save money, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s get to it and start exploring the best (and worst) times to visit the Maldives.

The Maldives is an archipelago made up of over 1,000 islands located in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka and India. Since it’s situated just north of the equator, the temperature stays relatively constant throughout the year with high temperatures in the mid-80s and low temperatures in the mid- to high 70s.

Of all the islands in the Maldives, only about 200 are inhabited. These islands are separated into 26 atolls — ring-shaped islands or chains of islands — spread out over 500 miles north to south and 80 miles east to west.

The Maldives is the lowest lying country in the world , with not a single island sitting higher than 6 feet above sea level. The capital, Malé, is only 3.2 square miles and is home to over 250,000 people, making it one of the most densely populated cities in the world.

The Best Times To Visit The Maldives by Season

The Maldives is a bit unique because it doesn’t experience 4 seasons like many places around the world. Instead, it has 2 — a dry season and a wet season.

Let’s take a look at the difference between these 2 seasons, as well as the weather in the Maldives each month. Keep in mind that the islands and atolls are spread out over about 500 miles north to south, so the weather can vary throughout the country.

Maldives in rainy season

The wet ( southwest monsoon) season in the Maldives is from May to October . Each island can see up to 9.5 inches of rain in a single month, making it a less popular time to visit for many tourists. However, just because it’s the wet season doesn’t mean there aren’t any sunny days. The weather during this time period is unpredictable and can include a combination of massive rainstorms with multiple sunny days.

The southern atolls see more yearly rainfall overall than the northern atolls, but storms are less frequent there and it’s less windy and sunnier overall.

Palm tree in the Maldives

The dry (northeast monsoon) season in the Maldives is from November to April . This is generally thought of as the best time to visit. While this is considered the dry season, it can still rain during this time period. November and December can actually see quite a bit of rain, mostly in the form of brief afternoon or evening thunderstorms, so keep that in mind when planning your trip to the Maldives. For the best chance of dry weather, plan your vacation for February or March.

Overwater bungalows in the Maldives

The Maldives in January

January is a peak time to visit the Maldives. Temperatures range between 77 and 84 degrees. The days are mostly sunny with an average rainfall of about 2.95 inches. Prices can be high, especially at the beginning of the month around New Year’s Day.

The Maldives in February

February is one of the best months to visit the Maldives. With less than 2 inches of rain, it’s also the driest month of the year . The temperature ranges from 79 to 84 degrees and the warm waters are crystal clear. February is prime time for romantic getaways, so expect high prices, especially around Valentine’s Day.

The Maldives in March

March is also a popular month to visit the Maldives. Temperatures range from 81 to 86 degrees and rainfall is at a minimum. It’s a great time for snorkeling and scuba diving since the waters are still calm and clear during this time. Prices can still be pretty high during March, especially when Easter falls during the month.

Hot Tip: The Maldives lies just north of the equator, so the sun can be intense. If you plan to spend lots of time outside, be sure to protect your skin with a rash guard and lots of sunscreen.

The Maldives in April

April is a transition month in the Maldives. This time between the dry and wet seasons can see unpredictable weather, including frequent afternoon storms, although there are still plenty of sunny days to be had. Water temperatures are at the highest of the year, averaging 86 degrees, so it’s a great time for activities like scuba diving and snorkeling. Air temperatures are also at the highest of the year , ranging from 81 to 88 degrees.

The Maldives in May

May marks the beginning of the wet season in the Maldives. This means there will be fewer crowds and lower prices, but also a higher chance of a lot of rain. Water visibility reduces and sea conditions can become a bit rougher. While that’s not great for scuba diving and snorkeling, it’s perfect for surfing. The temperatures in May drop from their April peak but are still warm with averages between 79 and 86 degrees. May can be quite a wet month, averaging over 8 inches of rain.

The Maldives in June

June can be very rainy in the Maldives which often receives almost 7 inches of rain, leading resorts to offer lower prices . This is great if you’re trying to save money, but set your expectations to include the possibility of some massive storms. While it can be wet anywhere in the country in June, the southern islands and atolls tend to be a little drier than the northern ones. Temperatures range from 79 to 84 degrees.

Paddle board in Maldives

The Maldives in July

While July is a rainy month in the Maldives, prices can increase slightly due to summer vacations. Temperatures remain steady between 79 and 84 degrees. July is a great time for surfing in the Maldives .

The Maldives in August

While still part of the wet season, August is a popular time to visit the Maldives due to school vacations. Temperatures are similar to June and July, ranging from 79 to 84 degrees. Rainfall can be a little less in the north than in the south, with the country seeing about 7.5 inches of rain in August.

The Maldives in September

September is the wettest month in the Maldives and the peak of the low season. Rainfall averages about 9.5 inches and downpours can be heavy. While this can be a good time to visit for surfers or those looking for low rates, it’s not ideal if you want to soak up the sun or float in calm waters outside of your overwater bungalow. Temperatures are still warm though, ranging from 77 to 84 degrees.

The Maldives in October

October is another transition month in the Maldives, with the wet season coming to an end and the dry season emerging toward the end of the month. Rainfall averages between 8.5 inches and 9 inches in October. There’s still great surfing during this month and temperatures remain steady between 77 and 84 degrees. Prices should still be relatively low since the weather can be unpredictable .

The Maldives in November

November is the coolest month in the Maldives , although it’s far from cold with temperatures ranging from 75 to 84 degrees. It’s the end of the surf season and the beginning of the peak season in the Maldives. Average rainfall drops below 8 inches but heavy downpours can still be common. Resort prices start to creep back up this month.

The Maldives in December

December is the beginning of peak travel times in the Maldives, although it’s actually one of the wettest months! December can see over 9 inches of rain, but it tends to happen at the beginning of the month. Temperatures remain balmy, fluctuating between 77 and 84 degrees. The Christmas and New Year holidays at the end of the month are popular times to visit the Maldives and therefore prices can be sky high. Some resorts may even have minimum stay requirements if you’re visiting during the holidays.

Bottom Line: The temperature is fairly consistent year-round in the Maldives, so you’ll want to pay attention to the wet and dry seasons when choosing when to plan your trip. The most popular time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season from November to April. If you’re trying to save some money, aim to visit during the wet season from May to October, but be prepared for some potentially wet days.

The Best Times To Visit The Maldives by Interests

Manta Rays in Maldives

The Maldives is a great location for scuba diving and snorkeling. While these are year-round activities, the water tends to be calmer, making the visibility better, from January through April . However, some wildlife, like manta rays and whale sharks, make more frequent appearances during the wet season.

Water temperatures are nice and warm throughout the year, ranging from about 80 to 86 degrees. The warmest water temperatures in the Maldives occur between March and June.

Hot Tip: Even in warm water like you’ll find in the Maldives, it’s always a good idea to wear a wetsuit if you plan to scuba dive. Make sure to check out our guide to the best snorkels, masks, fins, and snorkel sets if you prefer to travel with your own gear.

Did you know that bioluminescent plankton can make the nighttime sea glow in the Maldives? This phenomenon occurs when these microorganisms emit a blue light underwater. This beautiful display is actually thought to be a defense mechanism. Whatever it is, count yourself lucky if you get to witness it.

While it’s hard to predict when bioluminescence will be visible in the Maldives, your best chances of seeing it are between June and November when the skies are darkest and there is the largest amount of plankton in the sea. The hotspot to see bioluminescence in the Maldives is the “Sea of Stars” on Vaadhoo Island in Raa Atoll.

Surfing in Maldives

The best time for surfing in the Maldives is from February through November . While many tourists want to avoid the wet season from May to October in the Maldives, it’s actually a popular time to visit among surfers since the waves and swells can be bigger during this time.

If you’re lucky enough to be planning your honeymoon in the Maldives, you’ll want to put some thought into when you’ll be visiting. For the best weather, shoot for a trip between January and April. February and March are the months that tend to be the driest. However, if you are trying to save some money, consider visiting during the wet season from May to October. While you may have some rainy days, resort prices will be cheaper. And relaxing in an overwater bungalow with your new spouse during a tropical rainstorm can be a romantic way to spend the afternoon!

Let’s be clear — it’s never really “cheap” to go to the Maldives. However, you can save a little money by visiting during the wet season from May to October.

According to Google Travel, hotels are the most expensive in December and January, so avoid those months if you’re trying to save money. April through October will have the lowest hotel prices of the year .

Another great way to save money on your trip to the Maldives is to use points and miles for your hotel and flights .

We are planning to visit Maldives for our honeymoon from 24th April to end of April. Want to know that if the climate is favorable at that time. One of the travel agents mentioned that it is quite warm and not that pleasant so just wanted to confirm.

Also, would like to know about some good resorts and activities.

' class=

Weather and the time of year to visit are among the most frequently asked questions here on the forum. There is a section called "Top Questions about Maldives" on the homepage which will help with your query.

Please fill in some of the blanks for us and we'd be very happy to make suggestions that fit your wish list.

- Budget would be approx $US1600 for accomodation and transfers (excluding international filghts)

- Not very much aware regarding the transfers. Would like some suggestions from your end

- Looking for a large resort with activities

- Yes I do snorkel/dive

- There is no meal preference as such

can we visit maldives in april

You would be hard-pressed finding a resort for a week ( and including transfers ) in that budget. Pls also be aware that food and drinks at resorts are expensive and will add considerably to the budget you have for accommodation.

Oh I am sorry I meant we are planning for 3 nights and 4 days. The budget also excludes food and beverages.

Were you hoping to stay in a Resort or in a guesthouse or hotel on a local (inhabited) island?

I don't believe you will be able to stay at a resort (including transfers) for the budget you've quoted, so you will either have to increase the budget or consider staying on a local island. This is a totally different type of holiday and wouldn't be my personal choice for a honeymoon.

Local islands are not holiday resorts; they are islands where Maldivians live and work. Sharia Law applies, meaning that dress restrictions apply for both men and women, and alcohol is not available. Swimwear or beachwear may only be worn on dedicated "bikini beaches" on local islands and not outside of these areas. Beaches on local islands are not the groomed, picture postcard ones you see in holiday brochures and some have issues with rubbish.

Have a look at the "Top Questions about The Maldives" on the forum homepage where you'll find a thread about visiting on a budget, which may help you to decide whether you wish to increase your budget to visit a resort, or would be happy with a local island stay.

Sorry our posts crossed!

For 4 days/3 nights you should be looking at a resort near Male so that you may take a short transfer to your resort, saving you money and maximising your time in resort.

Although I haven't visited it myself, Embudu if very popular here on the forum and would be worth checking out via one of the recommended Maldives specialist agents who can provide you with a quote and availability. Purely Maldives, Simply Maldives, Magic of Maldives and Travel Lab are all favourites with forum members and I'm sure will be happy to help you with your planning.

The temperature is pretty much the same all year round - between 28 and 32 celsius. As to whether that's a pleasant temperature depends on how well you tolerate the heat. Some days are more humid than others so sometimes it feels hotter than it really is.

From sunset cruises to local island visits and desert-island picnics, there are lots of activities that you can arrange once you’ve arrived at your chosen island.

Diving in the Maldives

These idyllic coral islands rank amongst the best dive destinations in the world. When conditions are good, the underwater visibility is at the highest level – sometimes exceeding 50 metres – and the warm water temperatures year-round make diving in the Maldives a pleasure. The North Malé Atoll is home to the Lion’s Head and Wattaru Kandu dive sites, both of which are frequented by reef sharks. Wattaru Kandu is also home to stingrays and garden eels whilst Lankanfinokhu, or Manta Point as it’s known locally, is a great place to see manta rays being cleaned by local colonies of cleaner fish.

In the South Malé Atoll, Hukrueli is another place to see rays and cleaner fish, and Maaya Thila, a protected marine area, is home to white-tip sharks, turtles, zebra morays and the elusive guitar shark. Hanifaru lagoon in the Baa Atoll is one of the best places to see whale sharks and manta rays – June to September being the best time as this is during the monsoon season and equinox when the lagoon is filled with plankton.

The Scuba Diver course provides pre-entry level certification in three days and on completion you can then upgrade to an Open Water Diver qualification by taking the additional five day course. Our Ten Dives and Six Consecutive Days diving allow qualified divers to make the most of their time in these beautiful islands. Courses are available at Kurumba Maldives, Dhigali Maldives, Velidhu and Meeru.

Best time to visit Maldives

Temperatures in the Maldives stay at a wonderfully warm 25-30°Cyear-round and only drop a few degrees at night. There’s an average of 8 hours of sunshine every day and the water temperature barely falls below 25°C. There are distinct wet (south-west monsoon) and dry (north-east monsoon) seasons; peak season for the Maldives is between December and April when the climate is drier, it’s less windy and the weather is hotter. Most travellers see this as the best time to go, but there are other factors to consider when choosing the time of year to travel here – like when to see specific marine life and when you’ll find the best value offers. Each island in the archipelago has its own microclimate, but there are general patterns that occur throughout the year.

The Maldives in January The Maldives’ weather in January is hot, with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. There may be some rain, but at this time of year it passes very quickly. It’s a great month to visit the Maldives and booking in advance is advised. There’s also great visibility for diving and snorkelling.

The Maldives in February February is an excellent time to travel to the Maldives. It’s the Maldives’ driest month, with less than 70mm of monthly rainfall, average maximum temperatures of 30°C and around 10 hours of sunshine each day. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is excellent.

The Maldives in March In March, temperatures in the Maldives rise to an average maximum of 31°C – great for long days on the beach. Possible short bursts of rain offer relief from the hot temperatures. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is excellent and March also sees the start of the surfing season in the Maldives.

The Maldives in April April is another wonderfully hot month in the Maldives. This is the end of the Maldives’ official dry season and there are often showers mid-month. It’s also a little more humid. Water visibility for diving and snorkelling is still very good.

The Maldives in May May is hot, with average maximum temperatures of 31°C, but is the start of the Maldives’ official wet season and comes with risks of storms and possible whole days of rain. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water.

The Maldives in June June is another month in the Maldives with a high chance of rainfall. It’s a good time to take advantage of the best value offers if you’re willing to spend as much time enjoying your resort’s facilities as on the beach. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, however there’s a huge advantage for divers as manta rays and whale sharks come to feed on the plankton.

The Maldives in July The Maldives’ weather in July is hot and humid, with short heavy downpours. This is another time to check for great value offers and is particularly good for surfers. Water visibility for diving is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but the big draw underwater is the presence of manta rays and whale sharks. 26July is Independence Day and you may see small parades and public celebrations on resort islands.

The Maldives in August August in the Maldives is hot and humid, with an average 7 hours of sunshine each day and short heavy downpours. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but enticing offers mean this is still a popular time to visit.

The Maldives in September September is one of the Maldives’ wettest months. It sees average maximum temperatures of 30°C, and there’s still an average 7 hours of sunshine each day. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but there are great opportunities to spot whale sharks and manta rays feeding on the plankton.

The Maldives in October October is the Maldives’ wettest month, with high humidity and with possible whole days of rain. It’s a good time to take advantage of the best value offers if you’re willing to spend as much time enjoying your resort’s facilities as on the beach. October is the last month of the Maldives’ surfing season and the last month of the year for good sightings of whale sharks and manta rays.

The Maldives in November In November, temperatures in the Maldives are an average maximum of 30°C. The official wet season is finishing and although there are showers, the rain passes quickly.

The Maldives in December The climate for the Maldives in December is largely hot and dry, though mid-month showers are likely. It’s an excellent choice for some winter sun. Christmas and New Year are particularly popular and may include minimum stays.

A note on Ramadam The exact date of the holy month of Ramadan (known as Ramazan in the Maldives) changes each year. Guests visiting Maldives’ resorts during the holy month are unlikely to notice anything different to any other month – meals and alcohol are served as usual. If you’re visiting a local island, there will be some restrictions that you’ll understandably be asked to respect.

Best Time of Year to Visit the Maldives: A Comprehensive Guide

If you’re planning a trip to the Maldives, you’re in for a treat. With its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and stunning marine life, the Maldives is a tropical paradise that attracts visitors from all over the world. However, choosing the best time to visit can be tricky, as the weather in the Maldives can vary throughout the year.

The Maldives is a year-round destination, but the best time of year to visit the Maldives depends on what you’re looking for. If you want to avoid crowds and enjoy lower prices, the low season from May to October might be the best time for you. However, if you want to experience the best weather and enjoy outdoor activities, the high season from December to April might be a better choice. Keep in mind that the high season is also the busiest time of the year, so you’ll need to book your accommodation well in advance.

Maldives in January - The best time of year to visit the Maldives in my opinion

The weather in the Maldives is tropical and warm throughout the year, with temperatures ranging from 25°C (78°F) to 31°C (88°F). The Maldives has two main seasons: the dry season from December to April and the wet season from May to November.

During the dry season, you can expect sunny days, low humidity, and little rain. The wet season, on the other hand, is characterized by occasional rain showers and higher humidity levels. However, even during the wet season, you can still enjoy plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures.

We visited at the end of January and the beginning of February and the weather was great. We only had one shower for a few hours, but it was so nice and warm that we didn’t think of it as a problem. It did affect the underwater visibility though so keep this in mind if you want to do snorkeling or diving.

We also have friends and family who have visited during November, which is technically shoulder season. They said the weather was great and they had just an occasional shower, usually in the night. They used this time to chill in front of their villa or took an umbrella to wander around the island, as the rain was making everything smell amazing.

Is water safe to drink in the maldives a comprehensive guide, weather and climate.

When planning your trip to the Maldives, it’s essential to consider the weather and climate. The Maldives is a tropical destination, and the weather is generally hot and humid throughout the year. However, the weather can vary depending on the season you choose to visit. It’s also important to know that there’s little you can do to predict the weather. All the weather apps can give you a rough estimate, but the islands are so spread that probably no two islands experience the same weather, especially when it comes to rainfall.

Temperature

The temperature in the Maldives remains relatively constant throughout the year, with average temperatures ranging from 26°C (78°F) to 30°C (86°F). The warmest months are from April to May, with temperatures reaching up to 32°C (89°F). The coolest months are from December to February, with temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to 29°C (84°F).

You won’t feel a big discomfort though as you’ll mostly stay on the beach, wearing light clothes and enjoying a nice breeze. Be aware though that it’s your job to keep yourself safe while in the Maldives : stay hydrated , avoid mosquito bites , and keep your alcohol consumption under control.

The Maldives has two distinct seasons: the dry season and the wet season. The dry season runs from December to April, and the wet season runs from May to November. During the wet season, the Maldives can experience heavy rainfall, high humidity, and strong winds, and this can range from short showers from time to time to heavy rainfall for days or weeks. The dry season, on the other hand, is characterized by clear skies, low humidity, and little to no rainfall.

The humidity in the Maldives is high throughout the year, ranging from 70% to 85%. However, the humidity is lower during the dry season, making it the best time to visit if you’re sensitive to high humidity. This is nice though as you don’t feel the heat as you do in the desert, for example, so the physical discomfort is really limited.

The Maldives is known for its clear skies and sunny days, especially during the dry season. The wet season, however, is characterized by cloudy skies and occasional thunderstorms. While the rainfall might be limited, and the showers might be few and far between, the cloudiness of the skies will affect the water visibility, so keep this in mind if you’re into water sports.

In summary, the best time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season, which runs from December to April. During this time, you can expect clear skies, low humidity, and little to no rainfall. However, keep in mind that this is also the peak tourist season, and prices may be higher than at other times of the year. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, consider visiting during the wet season. While it may be rainy and cloudy, you can still enjoy the beautiful beaches and warm waters.

High and low seasons.

When planning a trip to the Maldives, it’s important to consider the high and low seasons, which are not only connected to the weather. The high season, also known as the peak season, is when the Maldives is most crowded and expensive. The low season, on the other hand, is when the Maldives is less crowded and more affordable, thus being the cheapest time to visit this gorgeous archipelago in the Indian Ocean.

Rainy Season

The rainy season in the Maldives runs from May to October. During this time, the weather is often unpredictable, with heavy rain and strong winds. While there may be some sunny days, the weather can be quite wet and humid. If you’re looking to save money on your trip, the rainy season is the best time to visit the Maldives.

However, be aware that some resorts may have minimum stay requirements during this time. A trip during this season is usually OK if booked last minute, as the weather forecast is as accurate as it can be. From our discussions with our host in The Maldives, July is a good month to visit during the rainy season, as apparently, the weather is less bad then.

August to November is the monsoon season in the Maldives, which means there’s a higher chance of rain and storms. However, the rain usually comes in short bursts, and there are still plenty of sunny days. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly trip, this is a good time to visit, as prices are significantly lower than during the peak season.

During the wet season, the sea can be rough, making it less suitable for water sports. However, this is the best time for surfing, as the waves are bigger and more consistent. The Maldives is also known for its marine life, and you can still spot a variety of fish, dolphins, and turtles during the wet season.

Cloudy day during January in the Maldives. It didn't rain, but the underwater visibility was affected.

The dry season in the Maldives runs from November to April. During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, with little rain and low humidity. This is the most popular time to visit the Maldives, with many tourists coming to escape the cold winter weather in their home countries. Room rates during this time can be quite high, and some resorts may require a minimum stay.

The weather in December and January is particularly pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 27°C to 29°C (81°F to 84°F). February is the driest month, with less than 70 mm of monthly rainfall, around 10 hours of sunshine every day, and balmy temperatures of 30°C / 86°F plus. This makes February one of the best months to visit the Maldives. March and April are also great months to visit, with warm temperatures, clear skies, and plenty of sunshine.

During the dry season, the sea is calm, making it ideal for water sports such as snorkeling, diving, and surfing. The visibility is excellent for snorkeling and scuba-diving, and you’re likely to spot a variety of marine life, including manta rays, whale sharks, and colorful fish.

Keep in mind that the month of December is usually very busy, as this is when to holiday season kicks in, and there are school vacation times in December as well. You’ll have to remember Valentine’s Day as well, as the Maldives is a honeymoon destination and plenty of couples will choose February as their target date. We’ll discuss more about different holidays below.

Shoulder Season

The shoulder season in the Maldives runs from April to June and September to November. During this time, the weather is still quite good, with warm temperatures and some rain. We have friends and family that visited in November and they had nothing but good things to say about everything. Room rates during the shoulder season are generally lower than during the peak season, and there are fewer crowds.

Overall, the best time to visit the Maldives depends on your budget and travel preferences. If you’re looking for a quiet and affordable trip, the low season is the best time to visit. If you don’t mind crowds and high room rates, the peak season is the best time to visit. However, if you’re looking for a balance between affordability and good weather, the shoulder season is the best time to visit.

Weather in the Maldives by Month – Best Months to Visit

When planning a trip to the Maldives, it’s important to consider the weather, as it can vary greatly throughout the year. As you probably have a rough idea of the time of year when you would like to visit, check the following month-by-month forecast to have an easy way to decide when to travel to the Maldives. Keep in mind though that Ramadan has a different date every year, so it might fall in any of the seasons for your particular year.

Maldives in january.

January is one of the best months to visit the Maldives, as it falls during the dry season. The weather is warm and sunny, with average temperatures ranging from 27°C (81°F) to 30°C (86°F). The sea is calm, making it perfect for water sports such as snorkeling and diving. Towards the end of the month though it’s the Chinese New Year, a holiday for which plenty of people travel.

The Maldives is one of the top destinations visited by some of these tourists so keep this in mind when booking. A good idea is to go early in January, right after the holiday crowds are out, but before the Chinese New Year ones have a chance to come. As most people avoid this time, you have a good chance of enjoying great prices during a nice weather season.

Maldives in February

February is another great month to visit the Maldives, with similar weather conditions as January. The sea is still calm, and the visibility for diving and snorkeling is excellent. Keep in mind the two holidays that take place during February: the Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day, both having the potential of affecting prices and crowds in the Maldives.

Maldives in March

In March, the weather starts to get hotter, with average temperatures ranging from 28°C (82°F) to 31°C (88°F). The sea is still calm, and the visibility for diving and snorkeling remains good. April is the hottest month in the Maldives, with average temperatures ranging from 29°C (84°F) to 32°C (90°F). The sea is still calm, and the visibility for diving and snorkeling is good. However, towards the end of April, the weather can become more humid, signaling the start of the wet season.

Easter can take place during April so check this out as well, as schools have vacation usually for Easter, and families with children might choose The Maldives for their destination. Or choose an adults-only resort to be sure you won’t have any children running around if this is what you wish.

Maldives in May

May marks the beginning of the wet season in the Maldives, with occasional rain showers and thunderstorms. The sea can become rougher, making water sports more challenging. However, the weather is still warm, with average temperatures ranging from 28°C (82°F) to 31°C (88°F). The prices are starting to decrease though so maybe it’s not such a bad idea to go in May in the Maldives.

Maldives in June

June is one of the wettest months in the Maldives, with frequent rain showers and thunderstorms. The sea can be rough, making water sports challenging. However, the weather is still warm, with average temperatures ranging from 28°C (82°F) to 31°C (88°F).

Maldives in July

July is another wet month in the Maldives, with frequent rain showers and thunderstorms. The sea can be rough, making water sports challenging. However, the weather is still warm, the average temperatures being at around 27°C (81°F) to 30°C (86°F).

When speaking to our host on one of the local islands in the Maldives , he mentioned that July is one of the best times during the low season to visit, as it’s right in the middle of the season and not when it changes, so the weather is more predictable at least.

Best Time To Visit Maldives: Weather and Festivals Guide 2023

Located about a thousand kilometres from the Asian mainland, the Maldives is an island nation all about clear blue seas, white sand beaches, vibrant culture and beautiful underwater landscapes, from corals to marine life like manta rays. But what is the best time to visit the Maldives?

That’s a good question you’ll want to know when travelling to the Maldives. There are only two seasons that dominate this dispersal of coral atolls: wet and dry.

One is very rainy and the other very sunny. Other factors can make the weather unpredictable (or predictable) in the Maldives, but don’t worry. We have you with a guide on when to visit these stunning islands.

Weather In The Maldives By Months

Weather in january.

I am so wondering when the best time to go to the Maldives is? Try January! The Maldives are not at their hottest in January; in fact, January is often the coldest month of the year on all the islands, but we would say that it is still quite hot.

The average temperature during the day is 30 ° C, and the sea temperature is 28 ° C, which is quite dry. So, in general, January is a good time of year to visit the Maldives.

There’s nothing to worry about being practically in the middle of the dry season. It is also not that humid. It is also sunny, with nine hours of sunshine a day; any clouds in the sky are carried away by the northeast winds.

Weather In February – Best Time To Visit Maldives

As in January, February temperatures remain fairly constant (at least during the day) at around 30 ° C. Nights are a bit cooler at 26 ° C, but the sea is calm! Heater! What does 29 ° C sound like? This is practically the level of the bathtub.

February is the driest month of the dry season (November to April) and has masses of sunshine. This makes it a famous time of 12 months to go to the Maldives, with many consecutive sunny days and virtually no clouds or rain. Any rain that falls in February is likely to be scattered across the southeastern atolls.

Ten hours of light a day, heat water to rest, predictable good weather. What’s not to like?

Weather In March – Best Time To Visit Maldives

can we visit maldives in april

Even in the dry season, March is the hottest month of the year. Temperatures drop below 30 degrees, and the sea remains very warm at 29 degrees. So it’s not the best time to travel to the Maldives. Someone time for a bath?

Even at night, temperatures rarely drop below 27 ° C. There is also hardly any rainfall. Again, any rain that falls will fall in the south; In the Maldives, there are on average only seven rainy days in March.

Although it’s hot, it’s the perfect time to get out of the house. Walk on the islands, snorkel; everything is fine. Just make sure you cover up when the sun is warmer, wear plenty of sunscreens, and stay hydrated.

Weather In April – Best Time To Visit Maldives

In April, temperatures averaged 29 ° C and 26 ° C at night; you still won’t need anything to keep warm at night. But the sea rises to its warmest of the year: 30 ° C. That’s more than air temperature! Insane.

It’s relaxing on the beaches, doing water sports and enjoying the good weather.

However, as of April advances, the rain will intensify as the dry season begins to pause and end. This is happening earlier in the north, thanks to monsoon winds from the southwest. However, only ten days after April 31, he sees rain. And that’s just average.

However, expect a few clouds due to these winds, which means loads of sun!

Weather In May Best Time To Visit Maldives

Best Time To Visit Maldives

It was the dry season. May heralds the beginning of the rainy season. Southwest winds are increasing, as is cloudiness and the number of rainy days that accumulate this month of the year.

However, it is still a warm month, but it rains a lot. The humidity rises, making the heat a little unpleasant, so it’s not the best time to go to the Maldives. You should get an air-conditioned place.

The entire Maldives archipelago is being hit by the monsoon, which is the rainy season. This humidity? At this point, it is about 76%, and you will be affected by (on average) 15 days of rain with a median temperature of 30 ° C. Quite sticky and not the best time to visit the Maldives.

Weather In June – Best Time To Visit Maldives

The temperatures in June do not change much, but it is the wettest month of the year, thanks to the rainy season. The winds are up to 30mph, and the humidity of 77% (average) is not very good.

Fortunately, there is still plenty of suns. The rain is usually short, although there is a heavy downpour in the afternoon. In addition, most of the rainfall falls in the southern part of the Maldives, meaning the north remains relatively less humid than these parts.

However, some days can be very grey, with huge monsoon clouds that threaten to rain all day long. The sea temperature is still ridiculous: 29 ° C.

Weather In July – Best Time To Visit Maldives

can we visit maldives in april

The Maldives are still in the middle of the rainy season in July. This means stronger winds, high humidity and, of course, heavy downpours. It’s still hot, though. The temperatures are always high here. In July, the daily average is around 29 ° C, which (surprise, surprise) is the same temperature as the very warm sea.

It is not the best time of the year to visit the Maldives, but with that in mind, it is one of the cheapest months to travel to the islands. If you are more concerned with your budget than the perfect weather, July may be a good option.

It rains mainly in the South and Southeast atolls, although all archipelagos have some rain at some point.

Weather In August – Best Time To Visit Maldives

August is still the rainy season, but this is where the winds begin to weaken, at least in the north. Rain still concentrates mainly in the south of the island country.

Humidity is still high, making it sticky, as are temperatures (around 30 ° C). The nights, however, start to cool down to 25 ° C. It is a very tropical time of the year. The sky is grey with clouds, and there is a heavy downpour. Repeat for the next few days! In August, the weather can be unpredictable.

Maybe it’s not the rainiest month, but when it rains, man, is it raining? Expect heavy rains. Even if they only last 20 minutes.

Weather In September – Best Time To Visit Maldives

Best Time To Visit Maldives

In the Maldives, the weather doesn’t change that much as the year goes on. It’s hot and dry or hot and humid, and September falls into the latter category.

September means that the southwest winds are still blowing, there are still unpredictable downpours, in the south, it is even wetter than in the north, and there are still big clouds in the centre of the islands. You already know the exercise. It rains around mid-day in September.

No wonder the number of tourists drops in September. Even temperatures are as low as 27 ° C, making it one of the coldest months of the year.

Weather In October – Best Time To Visit Maldives

The rainy season is finally coming to an end as the year in the Maldives approaches October. However, this does not mean that October is free from downpours. There are still many of them; it is the third rainiest month of the year.

There will still be more rain in the southern islands. And it’s still relatively humid, around 75% on average. You will still have around eight hours of sun a day, although the rains can be very intense when they do come. They also don’t make things any less hot.

The temperature at night is 25 ° C and the sea around 28 ° C. In fact, there aren’t many changes, although it starts to rain less at the end of the month.

Weather In November – Best Time To Visit Maldives

The mixed month of November means the Maldives are no longer “officially” in the rainy season … but that doesn’t mean it’s not raining. This month, things finally begin to change, with more sunny than rainy days (yes, finally).

We visited in November, and it turned out to be one of the best times to visit the Maldives. Tourists start visiting a little more in November. The weather becomes more predictable, with tropical storms from time to time.

Temperatures averaged around 20, while the sea is still a warm and salty bath that you should expect when visiting the Maldives. Humidity is also quite high. In November, we visited the Maldives and had only a few days of rain (but not all day) and a mostly nice sunny experience.

Weather In December – Best Time To Visit Maldives

Tourists begin arriving in the Maldives at the end of December. It’s Christmas after all, and who doesn’t want to spend Christmas in the Maldives? It’s sunny, it’s beautiful, it’s amazing and it’s one of the best times to visit the Maldives.

On the other hand, heavy rains still occur in December. However, not as much as in July.

Daytime temperatures rise to around 29 ° C, while after dark, temperatures drop to 25 ° C. The “dry monsoon”, also simply known as the dry season, begins to fall properly towards the end of the month. This means less humidity, fewer clouds, less rain and a slightly more predictable weather. Perfect beach weather, basically.

So When to travel to Maldives?

can we visit maldives in april

The Maldives islands have a temperate climate throughout the year, although it must also be said to have a dry and rainy season. The months of the dry season are mostly January, February and March. The rainy season is concentrated between May and October, with June and July being the rainiest months. The rest of the months, such as April, November and December, are ideal for visiting the beaches and enjoying good weather.

On the other hand, the high tourist season is especially concentrated in March so that prices will be higher and it will be more difficult to find accommodation. On the other hand, December to April, except March, is the best time to enjoy underwater life.

If you want to snorkel, dive or surf on the islands, avoid June and July due to the risk of storms. Better choose May, August, and September and October, as there will be less rain. Another perfect time to bathe is between November and December, which, although the temperatures are not that high, they are still warm, and there will be fewer tourists.

In summary, you should know that the average temperature of the Maldives archipelago is around 30ºC for most of the year. Its tropical climate makes this country a climatic paradise despite the monsoons. And speaking of monsoons, the islands are affected by the northeast monsoon between November and April, while the southwest monsoon appears from May to October.

However, and as a summary, the only months to avoid in any case are June and July. For the rest of the year, deciding when to travel to the Maldives is no problem. Let’s see below the best time to visit the islands according to your travel goals.

Festivals In The Maldives – Best Time To Visit Maldives For Festivals

Festivals in december-february.

The dry season or winter season as we know it in most of the Northern Hemisphere is an exhilarating time in the Maldives. The rains stop, and the sun comes out to play practically every day. What winter festivals in the Maldives can you expect?

Christmas is not officially celebrated as it is a Muslim country, but other international holidays appear. However, January 1 is an official holiday.

The Chinese community will celebrate Lunar New Year (January 25, 2023), and many hotels will embrace its spirit.

Depending on the lunar calendar (February 28, 2023), Huravee Day celebrated the expulsion of the Malabars from southern India almost 900 years ago.

The National Day (or Qaumee Dhuvas) falls between February and March and is celebrated in Rabee-ul Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the Maldives’ victory over the Portuguese invaders in 1573. Expect parades and marches throughout the archipelago.

Festivals in March-May

Holidays in the Maldives in the spring, at the end of the dry season include some festivities. April is the Martyr’s Day. Calculated according to the Islamic (lunar) calendar, it honours all martyrs throughout Maldivian history.

Ramadan, also known in the Maldives as Ramazan, begins with a 28-day fasting day and ends with …

Festivals in June-August

Eid ul Fitr! Eid ul Fitr is a typical summer event in other countries, but in the Maldives, this festival (sometimes in May, sometimes in June) occurs when the rainy season starts. Expect banquets and revelations.

Independence Day (July 26-27) celebrates the end of being a British protectorate when an agreement was signed in 1965 between two (now) sovereign countries. This is a great time to be in the Maldives, which has many celebrations. See people taking to the streets in colourful costumes.

August festivals in the Maldives include Bodu Eid. This is 66 years after the end of Ramadan and marks the beginning of the traditional pilgrimage to Mecca.

Festivals in September-November

Celebrated in late September, after another long fasting session like Ramadan, Kuda Eid consists of three days where people gather, visit the mosque, celebrate and dance. It relies heavily on food!

At the end of October/beginning of November (November 10-11, 2019), the Maldives celebrates the birthday of Prophet Muhammad! As you might expect, there is a feast and joy. Head to the capital city of Male to see the range of the celebrations.

As the Maldives begin to move away from the rainy season (only slightly), November 11 is celebrated as Republic Day. Today the Maldives was founded in 1968, three years after independence from Great Britain. This means marching bands, parades and marches.
