Cenotes Puerto Morelos

A cenote is a deep natural pit, or sinkhole, characteristic of Mexico, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Especially associated with the Yucatán Peninsula, and some nearby Caribbean islands, cenotes were sometimes used by the ancient Maya for sacrificial offerings. The term derives from a word used by the low-land Yucatec Maya, “Ts’onot” to refer to any location with accessible groundwater.

A QUICK HISTORY OF PUERTO MORELOS

First occupied by the indigenous Maya people from the ninth century, they inhabited the area around what is today Puerto Morelos until the coming of the Spanish conquistadors in the fifteenth century. Puerto Morelos  takes its name from Jose Maria Morelos, a nineteenth-century leader of the Mexican independence movement.  The archaeological remains of the town can be found within the grounds of the Botanic Gardens Alfredo Barrera Marin.

Puerto Morelos’ modern life began in the 1920s when it was a village of wooden homes owned by fishermen dotted about a single road. A hurricane in 1967 named Behula tilted the town’s short lighthouse to the angle you can find it in today. Although its functions were replaced with a newer, straighter version, the stout square lighthouse with its drunken angle has since become a symbol of the town.

Lapped by the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea in an area known as the Riviera Maya, Puerto Morelos is just 36 km from the resort city of Cancun and its international airport in Mexico’s far south. It is now home to roughly 10,000 people. The oldest part of the town, the Antiguo Puerto Morelos, is separated from other parts of the municipality by a series of mangroves and has developed from its origins as a small fishing village into a refined neighborhood of private homes, hotels, and restaurants.

La Ruta de los Cenotes Puerto Morelos

La Ruta de Los Cenotes Puerto Morelos, or the Route of Cenotes, is one of the best areas in the Yucatan in which to experience the magic of cenotes. More than 100 cenotes dot the jungle on either side of the Puerto Morelos Ruta de Cenotes for several kilometers. There are even handy maps on the road into Puerto Morelos detailing their locations, so it’s not hard to find a few cenotes you’ll love. Here, we highlight some of the most interesting sinkholes you can find along La Ruta de Los Cenotes Riviera Maya.

Ruta de los Cenotes: Best Cenotes in Puerto Morelos

Ruta de los Cenotes: Best Cenotes in Puerto Morelos

While cenotes in Tulum are amazing, and cenotes in Valladolid are quieter and fascinating, there’s nothing like Ruta de los Cenotes in Puerto Morelos.

Puerto Morelos cenotes are very off the path, many of them undiscovered and various still appear to be not very touristy despite the cenotes having zip lines, swings and other fun things people might like.

I’ve been hunting cenotes in Mexico for years now and in fact, during my recent visit I discovered that my photos from a few cenotes in Puerto Morelos are actually printed out and put on a poster there, so you might see some of these photos of me on the way when you go 😉

How to Get to Ruta de los Cenotes?

Ruta de los Cenotes is a road into the jungle in Puerto Morelos, but the road is fully paved. You’ll see a big sign on the highway.

Puerto Morelos is a smaller town between Cancun and Playa del Carmen . Visiting those cenotes can be easily done on a day trip from Playa del Carmen , Cancun or even Tulum .

There are no collectivos, so you either need to rent a car , take a taxi (but that’s pretty pricy as your driver will have to wait), or book a tour (only applies to some cenote visits).

The only other way of visiting the area without a car is by taking a Xenotes tour. They will take you to 4 different cenotes types for activities like zipline, snorkeling, kayaking and you get to see bits of everything. These cenotes aren’t usually open to the public outside of these tours, so it’s a very fun experience.

While you could hire a taxi to drive you around it would cost you way more as the taxi would need to wait for you while you’re at cenotes.

IMPORTANT: At the cenotes in Mexico, you’ll be asked to swim without any lotions or creams on your skin at all, as can poison fish, sea plants, and other delicate marine life. You also must take a quick shower before entering the cenote.

You will live after being exposed to the sun for a bit, but you’ll live. Sadly, other creatures will not survive if you infect their natural habitat with sunscreen. However, you can get biodegradable sunscreen  at some cenotes.

Please note: all prices are in Mexican Pesos (MXN). Prices increase all the time, so please keep in mind that it might be slightly higher. Be prepared.

1. Cenotes 7 Bocas

One of the first cenotes you’ll see on the highway and often a spot for group tours. It’s a complex of a few cenotes, some for snorkeling and cliff jumping while others are for diving.

While popular, I honestly think there are better options of cenotes in Puerto Morelos.

Cenote 7 Bocas Entrance Fee : 400 MXN. Cenote 7 Bocas Op ening Times : 9 AM to 5:30 PM daily.

2. Cenote Ich-Ha (Cenote Ojo de Agua)

cenotes tour puerto morelos

Cenote Ich-Ha looks pretty unimpressive at first, but fear not – it’s amazing!

Ojo de agua cenote has multiple jumping spots with smaller openings (there’s also a ladder to get down), but once you get in you’ll be amazed by the clear waters and semi-open tunnels.

Cenote Ojo de Agua Entrance Fee : 250 MXN. Cenote Ojo de Agua Op ening Times : 9 AM to 4 PM daily.

3. Cenote Boca del Puma

cenotes tour puerto morelos

Boca del Puma is a cenote complex of 2 cenotes (one open cenote and one cavern cenote). You need to visit it with a guide as it’s deep in the jungle, then spend some time at Cenote Agua Escondida which is part of the complex.

Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by a few friendly wild spider monkeys. Ziplining is included in the price and you can also take ATV trip. The actual Boca del Puma cenote is dark and incredible, but there’s also a second cenote with a zip-line, places to sit and shallow parts for kids.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this cenote.

Cenote Boca del Puma Entrance Fee : 400 MXN. Cenote Boca del Puma Op ening Times : 9 AM to 5 PM daily or by reservations recommended.

4. Cenote Zapote

Cenote Zapote is another eco-park with multiple small cenotes in the area, which means there are other activities included in the price as well as food and tequila tasting. Cenote Zapote is accepting guests by reservations only , otherwise, you might be waiting a while.

Cenote Zapote Op ening Times : 9 AM to 6 PM daily

5. Cenote La Noria

best cenotes Mexico

La Noria is a cenote on the road of cenotes close to Puerto Morelos. It’s a great cenote for diving as it’s very deep, but also you can swing inside a cave that I haven’t seen in any other cenote.

There’s also a floating platform at the center of the cenote, so you can swim to reach it and float.

Cenote La Noria Entrance Fee : 200 MXN. Cenote La Noria Op ening Times : 9 AM to 4 PM daily.

6. Cenote Sol y Luna

cenotes tour puerto morelos

Cenote Sol y Luna is one of the party cenotes. If you’re into fun spots to jump from, music, bar and hammocks to use. Surprisingly, when we visited in the morning there was absolutely no one else at the cenote so we had it all to ourselves.

The water in the cenote is surprisingly warmer than elsewhere and the color is amazing. There’s also a small waterpark with a few slides, temazcal place, and lounge chairs. For an extra 50 mxn you can rent a hammock.

Cenote  Sol y Luna Entrance Fee : 350 MXN. Cenote  Sol y Luna Opening Times : 10 AM to 5 PM daily.

7. Cenote Verde Lucero

best cenotes Mexico

Verde Lucero is an open cenote with various small caves that you can explore and use some floaties. Like the majority of cenotes in the area of Puerto Morelos, it has a zipline and a cliff for jumping. The whole scenery look very jungle like so you’ll surely enjoy it!

Cenote Verde Lucero Entrance Fee : 250 MXN for 4 cenotes Cenote Verde Lucero Op ening Times : 9 AM to 5 PM daily.

The Route of the Cenotes is a paradise where nature manifests in all its splendor and that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Located on Puerto Morelos, the well-known Route of the Cenotes houses several natural and adventure parks; as well as more than 60 cenotes , where in addition to snorkeling, diving, and kayaking, you can do fun activities such as zip lines, ATV, or all-terrain bike tours, bungee jumping and horseback riding.

cenotes tour puerto morelos

Where is the Cenote Route?

It’s located near Puerto Morelos, 25 minutes by car from Cancún or from Playa del Carmen. If you’re traveling from Cancun, take the federal 307 Highway in the direction to Playa del Carmen. Once you pass Puerto Morelos, you’ll find the detour to Leona Vicario. Access can be somewhat complicated if you don’t have your own vehicle, so we recommend renting a car or hiring a taxi, making sure that the service is round trip, or better yet, doing it through a tour that includes transportation .

cenotes tour puerto morelos

Here are some of the cenotes that you can not miss if you plan to visit this mystical place:

Cenote Zapote

It is located within the park of the same name – Parque Cenote Zapote – it’s 170 feet deep. It is unique due to its incredible mineral formations known as “Bells of the Underworld,” which are stalactites that grew underwater. If you want to see them, diving and having an expert diver certification is necessary because they are at great depth. The park has two other cenotes called Abuelo Che Che and Las Palmas; you will also find a zip line, bike tours, and ATV circuits.

cenotes tour puerto morelos

Cenote Siete Bocas

Siete Bocas is a semi-open cenote. Its name is due to its seven vents, some of them connected, which allows you to swim from one to another while you delight watching the roots of the trees fall in search of water or admire the stalactites. Five miles away from the Siete Bocas cenote, you will find an open cenote, which you can reach by bicycle or ATV.

Cenote Kin Há

It is a cave-shaped cenote that is an excellent place to dive, 130 feet deep and crystal-clear waters. Remember also to visit the open cenote Blanca Flor that is only one kilometer away and where you can slide on zip lines, or if you are more intrepid, launch yourself from an impressive tower 46 feet high.

Cenote La Noria

If you like camping, in this park you can do it. At 60 feet deep, it is perfect for people who simply want to immerse themselves in the refreshing waters of a cenote. Here you can also fly over its impressive jungle through a zip line circuit or travel by land driving an ATV.

Cenote Las Mojarras

It is the largest cenote of the Route of the Cenotes, 220 feet in diameter. Here you can fly over the water on its 2000 feet zip line or tour the majestic Mayan jungle by ATV.

Cenote Verde Lucero

It is a beautiful open cenote. Slide on its zip line and contemplate the emerald-green color of its waters or practice your best dives jumping from one of its platforms.

Cenote Boca del Puma

This incredible park has two cenotes inside, zip lines, bike, and ATV tours, as well as horseback riding, climbing, and rappelling. Here you can also learn about the history and elaboration of chewing gum.

Theme and Adventure Parks

Among the theme and adventure parks that you will find along the Route of the Cenotes are: Selvatica and Xenotes . In these parks, besides knowing the different types of cenotes in the area, you can do snorkeling, diving, and kayaking. You can do fun activities such as zip lines, ATV or all-terrain bike tours, bungee jumping, and horseback riding.

Essential Things to Know Before you Visit:

  • Bring a swimsuit, towel, sunglasses, cap or hat, fresh clothes and preferably wear shoes for water.
  • Before diving into any of the cenotes , try to eliminate from your body any chemicals (body creams, sunblock, makeup, deodorants, etc.).
  • If you are going to use sunscreen or repellent, make sure it is biodegradable.
  • Most cenotes are open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; however, we recommend that you always check in advance.

Cenote Zapote: Puerto Morelos Adventure Tour Guide

' src=

Cenote Zapote is an Ecopark located in Puerto Morelos, Mexico along the famous “Ruta de los Cenotes.”

I recently got to visit Cenote Zapote on the Puerto Morelos Snorkeling and Cenotes Tour with Kay Tours Mexico.

It was a full day adventure tour starting with snorkeling at the Puerto Morelos reef, followed by ziplining and visiting 3 different cenotes at Cenote Zapote Ecopark.

Cenote Zapote

About the Cenote Zapote Tour

The Cenote Zapote Puerto Morelos tour is one of the most unique Riviera Maya tours and a great tour option from Playa del Carmen.

Not only do you get to visit Cenote Zapote Ecopark, but you also get to snorkel at the Puerto Morelos reef, which is considered one of the best snorkeling spots in the Riviera Maya .

Cenote Zapote is a less well known Playa del Carmen attraction but is an incredibly fun Riviera Maya cenote tour where you can explore 3 different cenotes and experience 5 different ziplines.

Where is Cenote Zapote?

Cenote Zapote is located near Puerto Morelos, Mexico , which is about 30 minutes north of Playa del Carmen.

The ecopark is located along the Ruta de los Cenotes, which is an old road between Puerto Morelos and Valladolid.

Cenote Zapote Tour Itinerary

Here’s an overview of the tour itinerary:

  • Pickup Time: 7:00 AM
  • Travel to Puerto Morelos (30 minute drive)
  • Arrive to Puerto Morelos port and board boat
  • Early morning snorkeling tour of Puerto Morelos Reef (2 different locations)
  • Travel to Cenote Zapote Ecopark (30 minute drive)
  • Visit 1st Cenote – Overwater zipline
  • Zipline Tour (5 different zip lines)
  • Visit 2nd Cenote – Deep Open Cenote
  • Visit 3rd Cenote – Underground Closed Cenote
  • Travel to Playa del Carmen (30 minute drive)
  • Drop Off Time: 3:00 PM

Approximate duration: 8 hours

Snorkeling in Puerto Morelos

The first stop on the tour is snorkeling in Puerto Morelos.  You’ll board a small boat to visit the Puerto Morelos reef, which is considered one of the best places to snorkel near Playa del Carmen.

The snorkeling in Puerto Morelos was very impressive, and we got to see loads of colorful corals, fish, and marine life.  For me, the highlight of the snorkeling tour was swimming with sea turtles.

Puerto Morelos Snorkeling

Cenote Zapote Ecopark

The second stop on the tour is Cenote Zapote Ecopark, which is about a 30 minute drive from Puerto Morelos.

Cenote Zapote is a large cenote park and is named after the Sapote fruit trees, which can be found in the area.

Once the tour van is parked, you’ll walk between the cenotes Zapote and ziplines.

First Cenote

The first Zapote cenote you’ll visit on the tour is a large open cenote with an overwater cenote zipline.

This is a just a makeshift rope zipline, where you hold onto the triangular handle and drop into the cenote pool.

This cenote was one of my favorites that we visited and it will definitely give you a rush!

Cenote Zapote

Cenote Zapote Ziplining

After the first cenote, you’ll head to the ziplining course.  Once outfitted in your harness, you’ll ascend tall wooden stairs to the first platform.

I have to say the zipline system at Cenote El Zapote was very sophisticated compared to some of the other countries where I’ve ziplined.

It’s equipped with a smooth braking system so you don’t have to worry about stopping – all you have to do is enjoy the ride!

The zipline course was really fun and you even get to go upside down if you choose.

Zipline

Second Cenote

The second cenote on the tour is really impressive – it’s an open cenote with a high jumping platform and underwater cave system below.

If you’re brave enough, you can jump into the water, or walk down the stairs to the lower platform.

The cenote water is freezing but it’s a beautiful place to swim or float.  You’ll definitely want to bring a rash guard or swim shirt to stay warm.

Cenote Zapote

Lunch is included in the tour and you’ll get to enjoy it at a large outdoor pavilion with long wooden tables.

Most tour food that I’ve had is less than stellar, but I have to say the food we ate was amazing!

You’ll be treated to authentic Mexican tacos, beans, rice, and best of all handmade tortillas.  The lunch is served by Mexican women so you can really get a taste of authentic Mexican cuisine.

cenotes tour puerto morelos

Third Cenote

The last cenote that you’ll visit on the tour is an underground cave like cenote.

It has steep steps that descend into a dark cavern full of stalagmites and stalactites.  You can swim or float in the water in the cenote cave if you wish.

Cenote Zapote

What to Bring on the Tour

Below are a few items I would recommend bringing on the tour.  If you want to take your own pictures, you’ll definitely need a GoPro or waterproof camera that can be fastened to your wrist or body.

You’ll be doing a lot of water activities and with the ziplines you don’t want to risk having your items fall.

  • GoPro or waterproof camera
  • Biodegradable sunscreen
  • Water Shoes
  • Change of clothes
  • Money for tips

Cenote Zapote

Cenote Zapote Ecopark

Cenote Zapote Tour

The Cenote Zapote tour is the most exotic in Riviera Maya and will please travelers from Playa del Carmen.

In addition to visiting Cenote Zapote Ecopark, you can snorkel at the Puerto Morelos reef, considered one of Mexico’s best snorkeling spots.

The Cenote Zapote is lesser-known, but that offers lots of fun in the cenote, where you can explore 3 different cenotes and 5 different zip lines.

Where is Cenote Zapote?

Cenote Zapote in Puerto Morelos, Mexico, located a half-hour’s drive from Playa del Carmen. The park is located along the old road between the cities of Puerto Morelos and Valladolid.

Cenote Zapote Tour Itinerary

Below is an overview of the itinerary to the Cenote Zapote.

  • Pickup Time 7 AM.
  • Head to Puerto Morelos (a 30-minute drive)
  • Arrive at the port of Puerto Morelos and board the boat
  • Early-morning snorkeling tour of Puerto Morelos Reef (2 locations)
  • Travel to Zapote Ecopark (a 30-minute drive).
  • Visit the first cenote overwater zipline.
  • Zipline (5 different zip lines)
  • Visit the second Cenote (Deep Open Cenote)
  • Visit the third Cenote (Underground Closed Cenote)
  • Reach Playa del Carmen with a 30-minute drive
  • Drop Off Time: 3:00 PM

Snorkeling in Puerto Morelos

The first thing is snorkeling in Puerto Morelos. You will reach the Puerto Morelos reef on board a small boat. It is a great place to snorkel near Playa del Carmen.

Snorkel In Musa Manchones

The scuba diving in Puerto Morelos was incredible; we could observe different types of corals, fishes, and life underwater . The most memorable part of the dive was the encounter with sea turtles.

Cenote Zapote Ecopark

For the next stop, you’ll be taken to the cenote Zapote Ecopark, a 30-minute drive from Puerto Morelos.

Cenote Zapote is a large cenote park named after the trees called Sapote that can be found in the park.

Once the vehicle has been parked, you will walk between the cenotes Zapote and zip lines.

First Cenote

The first Zapote cenote you’re about to visit is a large open-air cenote with an overwater cenote zipline.

This is a makeshift rope zipline, holding onto the triangular hand and falling into the cenote pool.

This cenote is one of the favorites that I introduced to you, and it will give you a good ride!

Cenote Zapote First Cenote

Cenote Zapote Ziplining

After you’ve completed the first ziplining lesson, you’ll head to the rope course. Once equipped with the harness, you’ll ascend tall wooden stairs to the first platform.

I have to say the zipline system at Cenote El Zapote was considerably more modern than others in Latin America.

It has a durable braking system, so you can enjoy the ride without worrying about stopping.

The whole zipline course was fun; you could go upside down if you chose to.

Second Cenote

The second cenote is outstanding and has a high jumping platform and a cave system below.

If you are fearless enough, you can dive into the water or walk down the stairs to the lower platform.

However, the cenote water is very cold to swim in or float in. You’ll want to bring a rash guard or swim shirt to keep warm while you’re there.

The lunch I ate has not impressed me in the least, but I have to praise what we ate.

You’ll be treated to a taco feast, beans, rice, and homemade tortillas. Mexican women serve the lunch so that you can taste authentic Mexican food.

Wooden Lunch Table

Third Cenote

The last location of the tour is a dark cave similar to cenotes. It has steep steps going down into a pool full of stalactites and stalagmites. You can swim or float in this pool if you wish.

What to Bring on the Tour

Watch for these specific items during the tour. There are a lot of waterproof cameras and GoPros on the market that you may want to bring along.

You’ll be taking a lot of water activities, so it’ll be good to have a waterproof camera that can mount around your wrist or shoulder.

  • Swimsuit according to your size
  • A big size Towel
  • GoPro or a waterproof camera for underwater photography
  • Biodegradable sunscreen
  • Rash Guard from UV protection
  • Water Shoes
  • A pair of clothes to change
  • Some money for tips

Mexico Packing List

Cenote Zapote Tour Cost

It costs $145 per person with a minimum of six people and is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

If you wish to engage in watersports in Puerto Morelos, the price is USD 59 per person and is provided on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 11 AM.

Consider the price of the tour includes:

  • An experienced guide (English and Spanish Language)

In conclusion, the Cenote Zapote Ecopark is a great place to visit if you’re looking for an adventure. The trip was very informative, and the scenery was beautiful. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a fun and educational experience.

  • Lauren M 1 contribution 0 4.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing trip and exceptional service! Booked the ATV Jungle Adventure package with ziplines, cenote swimming and tequila tasting with my partner for his first time visiting Mexico (and my third time) The team who guided us, especially Kevin or “Moto Moto” was very pleasant and provided an excellent service for the activities we did! Towards the end they also put on a traditional Mexican performance whilst we was having our food. Overall it was amazing for the value of the money, and we would definitely consider booking with these guys again if we come back to Mexico again in the future 😊 Read more Review of: Cancun ATV Jungle Adventure, Ziplines, Cenote and Tequila Tasting Written April 27, 2024 This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Choo Ha Cenote Tour from Puerto Morelos in Mexico

  • Opens in a new window

Thousands of cenotes (pronounced say-no-tay) dot the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. These are natural sinkholes in limestone bedrock, some are underground, some are open-air and some are a combination of both . Each has its own unique features and no two are the same. Before our time in Mexico, we hadn’t heard of cenotes. This soon changed though when we arrived in Puerto Morelos, a fishing town you should think about adding to your Yucatan Peninsula itinerary,  We learnt there are many cenotes near Playa del Carmen and other cenotes near Tulum such as Choo Ha Cenote.

Even better we soon found out that Puerto Morelos was the gateway to the Ruta de Los Cenotes , a road with cenotes scattered either side of it in the jungle . Keen to visit at least one cenote, meant to be one of the best  things to do in the Yucatan , my ears pricked up when I heard about a tour with Layla Guesthouse to visit Choo Ha Cenote . A couple of days later we were thrilled to get an invite to join their next tour.

What you'll find in this post

Choo Ha Cenote Tour

Robin the owner of Layla Guesthouse in Puerto Morelos kindly invited us to join their Mayan Experience Cenote Tour, which was created in conjunction with the same Mayan families that helped build Layla Guesthouse. They became friends and one day whilst Robin was visiting their Mayan village, they showed him the cenote they had discovered . The idea for a Choo Ha Cenote Tour was born and the rest is history. Now Layla Guesthouse and the Mayan families work together to enhance the facilities at the cenote and to deliver the tours . Layla Guesthouse helps support the Mayan village from the profits and contributes to the Cenote Green Development Fund.

Dry Cave   Exploration

Dry Cave near Choj Ha Cenote in Mexico

After an easy 20-minutes of walking, we found ourselves at the entrance to a dry cave. Guided only by torchlight, we climbed down the stone steps into the cool darkness. Surrounding us were thousands of stalagmites, stalactites and other shimmering limestone formations. Some of the stalactites looked very sharp and I had visions of one spearing my head, that would be just my luck! Robin and Paz guided us through the cave pointing out things of interest and telling us how the different formations came to be . They were always ready to give a helping hand to anyone that needed it when the ground became a little slippery.

Swimming in Choo Ha Cenote

Entrance to Choj Ha Cenote in the Yucatan Peninsuala, Mexico

When we emerged from the dry cave it was another 20-minute walk back for the highlight of the day – swimming in Choo Ha Cenote. First, we had a refreshing coconut to rehydrate after our walk; they cost 20 pesos (£0.80) each, then it was time to get ready. We changed into our swimwear and had a quick shower to remove any sun lotion and insect repellant. We’d all taken Robin up on the offer of life jackets to make the swim easier and snorkels and masks so we could see what lay beneath the water. Most of us also had some type of water shoes on which I’d recommend as some of the rocks can be a little rough or sharp.
