Traffic, congestion, transportation and information make Miami one of the cruise ports to have solid plans. The Doubletree by Hilton on Biscayne Bay is the best place to stay before a cruise in Miami. A more affordable option is Comfort Inn and Suites but the amenities are much different.

However, allow plenty of time for parking, customs, port entry, and all the lines for a particular cruise. One nearby hotel that is highly rated for pre-cruise stays is the Home2 Suites by Hilton . It’s our favorite.

We believe it is a great place to come prior to a cruise because of the wide range of things to do near the port. As the busiest cruise port in Florida, Port Canaveral handles traffic well.

Our best recommendation for a hotel to stay at prior to a cruise is the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina less than 10 minutes to the Port. It is waterfront on the Intracoastal and they have shuttles to the port.

Nearest Airport : Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) is next to the cruise port. The best airfares into FLL are here .

Our thoughts about Port Everglades : While we live just a few minutes from the Port of Tampa and Fort Lauderdale is 4 hours away, Port Everglades is our favorite Florida cruise port. The wide range of cruises offered from this port makes the difference.

Places to Stay When Taking a Cruise from the Port of Tampa

We know the area. Our favorite place to stay near the Port of Tampa is the Water Street Marriott . The location is on Riverwalk and the Hillsborough River. A more affordable option is the Best Western Tampa about 3 miles away.

Nearest Airport : Tampa International Airport (TPA) is just 20 minutes from the Port of Tampa. Traffic is reasonable. The best airfares into TPA are here .

Our thoughts on the Port of Tampa : We love the Tampa Port and everything around it. However, the port is small compared to the three previous ports above. The number of cruises departing from Tampa is a fraction of the others. However, a small port means less parking hassles and fewer traffic problems.

Ports 5 & 6 – Key West, Jacksonville and West Palm Beach

Both Jacksonville and West Palm Beach cruise ports have limited sailings. However, they may fit your plans or needs when it comes to choosing the perfect cruise. It should be noted that Key West is a cruise port, but it is a destination and not a port for embarkation.

Jacksonville:

• Limited Options: While it does have cruise activity, Jacksonville doesn’t boast the same level of variety and frequency as larger Florida ports like Miami or Fort Lauderdale.
• Development Potential: JAXPORT has plans to expand its cruise facilities in the future, which could increase the number of cruise lines and destinations offered.

PortMiami is located on Dodge Island in Biscayne Bay. It is connected to the mainland by both the Port Miami Bridge and The Port of Miami Tunnel. Located just an island over is Miami’s famous South Beach neighborhood. This area is home to expansive beaches, pastel art-deco buildings, luxury and boutique hotels, shops, restaurants, and a renowned nightclub scene.

To the west on the mainland is downtown Miami. Downtown features the open-air Bayside Marketplace shopping center, Little Havana neighborhood, and the large Bayfront Park. Other nearby attractions include the Miami Seaquarium, Jungle Island nature theme park, and the Phillip & Patricia Frost Museum of Science.

If you’re flying in day-of ( which we don’t recommend ), your cruise line may also have a shuttle directly from the airport to the cruise port. Other shuttle companies are also available, as well as public transport such as the Metrorail and Miami Trolley.

Cruisers may also fly into Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for a voyage out of Miami. This is about a 45 minute drive. We recommend using a rideshare to get from FLL to PortMiami , but shuttles, taxis, and public transportation are also available.

There are three convenient airport options for those sailing from Port Canaveral. They are Orlando International Airport (MCO), Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), and Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB). MCO and MLB are located about a 45 minutes’ drive away and SFB is located about an hour away.

If arriving at MCO, there are several ways to get from the Orlando airport to Port Canaveral . Many cruise lines have their own shuttles from the airport to Port Canaveral, such as Disney Cruise Line. Carnival offers a shuttle from both MLB and MCO. Some hotels may also offer shuttles, with independent shuttles available as well. Rideshares, taxis, and public transport via bus are also options.

3. Port Everglades

Port Everglades is the third-busiest cruise port in the world. It serves as home to cruise ships from lines including Celebrity, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Silversea, Disney, and Viking, among others. Located just south of downtown Fort Lauderdale, the land that makes up Port Everglades is actually located in three municipalities: Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Dania Beach.

If you’re looking to get some shopping in before or after your cruise, head north just across the river to Las Olas Boulevard, which is lined with shops and restaurants. Then, take a stroll along the Las Olas Riverwalk. Located 14 miles west of Port Everglades, Sawgrass Mills is the largest outlet mall in the U.S., making it another great shopping option.

Other nearby activities and points of interest include the Museum of Discovery and Science, Ft. Lauderdale Beach, downtown Hollywood, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, and the Jungle Queen Riverboat Cruise.

Lauderdale Airport & Cruise Port, Renaissance Fort Lauderdale Marina Hotel, and Four Points by Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Cruise Port. There’s also the popular Marriott Harbor Beach among others on Ft. Lauderdale Beach and nearby Dania Pointe with a few hotel options.

Port Everglades is located a quick 10-minute drive from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Rideshares, taxis, and public transportation via bus are all available. Many hotels offer airport and cruise port shuttles, and there are also independent shuttle company options.

And similar to PortMiami, cruisers may alternatively fly into Miami for a sailing from Port Everglades. We recommend ridesharing but taxis, shuttles, and public transportation are also available.

4. Port Tampa Bay

Port Tampa Bay is located on the west coast in central Florida. Its convenient downtown Tampa location makes it a great option for those who want to spend some time in Tampa before or after their voyage, then hop on the ship without much of a (or any!) drive. Tampa is a popular starting point for western Caribbean voyages. Though, other Caribbean, Bahamas, and Panama Canal itineraries originate in the city as well. Cruise lines that sail from Tampa include Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and Celebrity.

A popular attraction to visit before or after your voyage is the Florida Aquarium, located next to the port. The American Victory Ship & Museum, located in the same area, is a historic United States Merchant Marine Ship that you can walk through.

For upscale shopping and dining, head to Hyde Park Village which is just a mile from the port. The Glazer Children’s Museum and the Tampa Museum of Art are located near the port, which are along the two-mile-long Riverwalk.

Cruisers may fly into one of two airports to get to their cruise out of Tampa: Tampa International Airport or St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. The Tampa airport is a quick 25 minute drive, depending on traffic. St. Pete-Clearwater usually takes around 35-40 minutes.

Some cruise lines have shuttles from Tampa International Airport to the cruise port. Further, independent shuttle companies have options from both airports. Some hotels also offer their own shuttles from the airport and to the cruise port. Public transportation through Tampa’s TECO Line Streetcar is also available, but we don’t recommend it for getting to the cruise port because only one route runs near it. Rideshares and taxis are also available.

Located on Florida’s northeastern coast, JAXPORT is primarily a cargo port. However, two cruise lines currently have ships based in Jacksonville as well: Carnival Cruise Line and small-ship company American Cruise Lines. Located on the St. John’s River, cruisers have a scenic sail away as they wind down the river for a couple miles before reaching the open ocean.

Things to do in Jacksonville before or after your cruise include visiting the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens, exploring the Museum of Science and History, and catching a performance at the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. There’s also Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Ponte Vedra Beach within about a 30 minutes’ drive. If you want a quiet place to enjoy the ocean, you can also head to Amelia Island, which is under an hour away.

The drive from Jacksonville International Airport to JAXPORT is around 20 minutes, depending on traffic. Rideshares, taxis, and independent shuttles are all available. Many hotels have airport shuttles, though you aren’t likely to find many hotels in Jacksonville that also offer shuttle service to the cruise port.

6. Port of Palm Beach

When many people think of cruising from Florida, they’d never think of Palm Beach. But the city does have a port and it’s home to one cruise ship: Margaritaville at Sea Paradise . The sole vessel under the Margaritaville at Sea cruise brand, Paradise sails short two-night voyages between Palm Beach and Freeport, Bahamas.

Fun attractions in Palm Beach and West Palm Beach include the Manatee Lagoon, the Palm Beach Zoo, the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, the Norton Museum of Art, Rapids Waterpark, and Mounts Botanical Garden. For time outside and at the beach, consider visiting the John D. MacArthur Beach State Park or Phil Foster Park, which includes an underwater snorkeling trail.

The drive from Palm Beach International Airport to the Port of Palm Beach is about 20 minutes. Rideshares and taxis are available. Further, some hotels offer shuttles to and from the airport as well — though they likely won’t offer a shuttle to the cruise port.

7. Port of Key West

We had to include the Port of Key West on this list of cruise ports in Florida as well. Even though it isn’t a cruise ship homeport, it does serve as a port of call on many itineraries to the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Located on the westernmost tip of the islands that make up the Florida Keys, the city of Key West has a distinctly Florida charm highlighted by its Old Town historic district and pastel houses.

Popular activities in Key West include taking a stroll on Duval Street — lined with unique shops and vintage restaurants. Cruisers can also visit the famous Sloppy Joe’s Bar for a sloppy joe, explore the Hemingway Home & Museum, and take a photo at the southernmost point of the continental U.S.

Cruise ship ports in Florida – the essential guide

If you live in the Sunshine State, you will most likely be familiar with cruise ship ports in Florida. And you will be lucky enough to be able to hop in the car and drive to your cruise port – even if it’s a few hours away. Your cruise packing and luggage gets tossed into the trunk, and all you need to do is fill up the gas tank and book your parking spot at the port.

Arriving at the port city the same day your cruise departs versus a few days early

We have been in the travel industry for many years. And we have helped thousands of customers book their dream vacation. So, of course, we have some great stories to tell.

And we also have horror stories. There is nothing more disappointing than being stranded at the port as you watch your cruise ship sail off into the sunset – without you on board.

And it happens more often than you may like to think. If you usually fly in on the day your cruise departs and have never missed a check-in, then indeed you are lucky.

Hoping that your time and budget allow, we advise you to spend some time in your departure city before you start your cruise.

If you are a new visitor to the city, or even a returning guest, these pre-cruise days can be a fantastic way to start your vacation.

And that means booking a flight into your departure city at least three days before your cruise start date. Fly into your departure city a few days before your cruise start date

Flying early into your departure city means that:

• If your flight is delayed or, worse yet, canceled, you can reschedule your flight plans and arrive in time for your cruise, albeit you may miss a hotel night or two.

If this happens, do two things:

• Ask the airline staff who help you rebook your flight ticket about getting a “Flight Delay or Cancellation Certificate.” You may need to download this from the airline’s website once you return home after your vacation. Request a meal voucher or, if necessary, overnight accommodation at an airport hotel while you wait for your next flight. If it’s the airline’s fault that your flight was delayed or canceled, then they are responsible for taking care of you.
• Call your hotel once you have a rescheduled flight and inform them of your approximate time of arrival. Be sure they hold your room for the remaining nights for you so they do not think of you as a “no show”. When you arrive at the hotel, you can discuss a possible refund for the missed night. If they have a “no refund” policy (it’s not their fault your flight was delayed), then get written confirmation that you did not occupy the room for the missed night. Then refer back to your travel insurance provider for compensation when you get home.
• It will be less stressful if your flights do not go according to plan knowing that you have allowed yourself extra time.
• Use the extra time to get to know a new city, experience the culture, try the food, and shop a little more before your cruise starts. If you are lucky, it could be a bucket list destination that you have always wanted to visit. So try and budget for the additional cost of extra hotel nights and some meals. You won’t be sorry.

Flying the same day into your departure city as your cruise leaves port means that you are 100% relying on the airlines to make sure that:

• Your flight is not cancelled, due to bad weather, aircraft technical problems, a delay at the destination airport which has a knock on effect, or a personnel strike by the airline staff.
• The flight does not suffer a long delay due to technical problems, overbooking, late passengers, broken luggage conveyor belts, etc.
• Your luggage arrives and does not go missing. You don’t want to end up boarding your cruise ship with only the clothes on your back. But it’s happened to many.

You are also assuming that your transportation at other end to get you from the airport to your cruise port works according to plan. And that they are no delays, accidents, traffic chaos or strikes that could delay you.

Conclusion: Many of us have traveled on holiday for years without a hitch. But many of us have also experienced delays and disappointments, and lost money in the process due to failed planning.

Why take the risk? Avoid flying into your departure point on the same day your cruise leaves port.

At what time should you schedule your return flight home after your cruise?

Everyone hates checking in too early for a flight and having to wait hours at the airport before boarding. It is often an expensive endeavor as airport shopping and restaurants are not the cheapest. And it’s even more complicated when traveling with children.

Timing your flight home after your cruise ship has arrived in port can be tricky.

Too early and you risk missing your flight when the disembarkation takes much longer than expected, and there are queues for taxis or transfer buses.

And scheduling a flight very late on the day of arrival into the port may mean you will end up with a long wait at the airport.

If you book a cruise package with the cruise line, that is, flight and cruise, then very often, a transfer is included. The cruise line will never want you to miss your flight so you will have priority disembarkation and they will get you to your departure airport in good time. Sometimes way too early but you cannot control this.

But if you are booking your own flight, here is a list of things to think about to minimize the risk of anything going wrong when you just want to get home. And the general rule is to err on the side of caution.

Your flight booking – getting to the airports from the cruise ship ports in Florida

• Check which port your cruise ship arrives at after your cruise (yes, it can be different to your departure port). Then check how far the airport is from the cruise ship port. Google maps is great at giving you the distance and estimated transfer time by road.
• Check the time of day your cruise ship is estimated to dock at the cruise port .
• Remember the cruise ship has to clear customs and be secured before passenger disembarkation starts. This can often be up to 2 hours.
• Check your latest check in time for your flight with the airline . International travelers can expect to need to check in 2 hours before flight departure. Domestic travel is a little shorter. But many, many airlines close their gates from around 45 minutes before take off, so better to be cautious and turn up early rather than late. Remember you need to check in, leave your luggage, get through security checks and find the right gate number.
• If your cruise ship docks early in the morning , the general rule is book a flight which leaves, at the earliest, lunchtime. Or longer if you have a long transfer to the airport (think of Ravenna port outside of Venice for example, where some cruise ships now dock instead of Venice Island. Transfer time from Ravenna port to Venice Airport is estimated to be around 2.5 hours (150km).
• If your cruise ship docks after lunch the general rule is to book an early evening flight.
• Always book a flight ticket that is flexible. That means one that is both cancellable and rebookable. If anything goes wrong – you get sick, you get delayed, etc. you can change your air ticket or get a refund (often against a fee that the airline withhold). Top this up with great travel insurance. So if things do not go as planned, you don’t lose your money on your flights or at the very least you have the option to rebook to a new flight.
• Consider extending your vacation and staying one or two nights at a hotel after your cruise instead. That way there are no issues with flights the same day as port arrival.

Where are the cruise ship ports in Florida located?

There are four major cruise ports in Florida.

• Port of Miami – The port is located in Miami , South Florida. About 3.5 km (2 miles) from downtown Miami, 9km (6 miles) from South Beach and 16km (10 miles) from Miami International Airport (MIA).
• Port Everglades – T he port is located in Fort Lauderdale, South Florida. About 6km (4 miles) from downtown Fort Lauderdale and 5km (3miles) from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) About 45km (28 miles) north of Miami. 
• Port Canaveral – Port Canaveral is located on the east coast of Central Florida. About 82km (51 miles) east of downtown Orlando and 75km (46 miles) from Orlando International Airport (MCO).
• Port Tampa Bay – Port Tampa Bay is located on the west coast of Central Florida. About 9km (6 miles) from downtown Tampa and 16km (10 miles) from Tampa International Airport (TPA).

Which airports are closest to the cruise ship ports in Florida?

• Port of Miami – The port is located 16km (10 miles) from Miami International Airport (MIA).
• Port Everglades – The port is located just 5km (3miles) from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and 45km (28 miles) north of Miami International Airport. It is 78km (49 miles) from Palm Beach International Airport.
• Port Canaveral – Port Canaveral is located 75km (46 miles) from Orlando International Airport (MCO).
• Port Tampa Bay – Port Tampa Bay is located 16km (10 miles) from Tampa International Airport (TPA) and 130km (85 miles) from Orlando International Airport. It is 230km (140 miles) from Southwest Florida International Airport (Fort Myers).

What are my options for transport to cruise ship ports in Florida?

Both Lyft and Uber are car services widely used in Florida, together with regular taxis and shuttlebuses.

Port of Miami

• Miami Airport to Port of Miami – we recommend airport shuttle to port. Journey time is about 15 mins but allow for traffic delays. Pre book your shuttle. Taxis are readily available right outside your arrival terminal. Use the Uber app to ring for an Uber which is often slightly less expensive than using a taxi.
• Arriving by car and parking at Port of Miami – Garage parking facilities are close to the port for both short term and long term cruise parking. Some cruise lines have their own garage parking too. Port Miami parking rates can be found here .
• Downtown Miami hotel to Port of Miami – Ask your hotel to order a taxi for your transfer to the port. Luckily PortMiami is very close to downtown and therefore the taxi transfer will be quick and relatively inexpensive. And it is the easiest option when carrying suitcases.
• South Beach hotel to Port of Miami – here again we recommend get a taxi for your transfer to the port. It’s close by but you cannot walk it. It is the easiest option with cruise baggage.

Port Everglades

• Fort Lauderdale Airport to Port Everglades – It’s a 20 minute taxi ride to the port from Fort Lauderdale Airport. Alternatively there are shuttle services outside arrivals. The cost will be even less as you share your ride with other passengers.
• Miami Airport to Port Everglades – This journey is about 45 minutes by car. Taxis are the most expensive way to travel costing around USD$90 dollars for the trip. Which is fine is you are sharing the ride between 4 people. Otherwise opt for the cheaper option of the airport shuttle bus leaving every hour. Book your ticket for about USD$25 per person before you leave home.
• Arriving by car and parking at Port Everglades – There are 2 parking garages that service parking at t he port. You cannot prepay or prebook, just turn up and park. Choose the parking garage closest to your cruise terminal number.
• Downtown Fort Lauderdale hotel to Port Everglades – It’s a 20 minute car ride from downtown hotels to the port. Use a taxi or a car service.
• Downtown Miami hotel to Port Everglades – There is a shuttle service from designated stops downtown that takes about 1 hour to get to the port. Ticket prices are about USD$25 per person. Alternatively use taxi for around USD$100 or a less expensive Uber ride.
• South Beach hotel to Port Everglades – Ask your hotel to book a taxi. It’s the easiest and most reliable way to get you to the port on time from South Beach.

Port Canaveral

• Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral – There are shared shuttle rides from the airport to the cruise port at Port Canaveral and we recommend you book your place in advance. The fee is around $25 per person. If you are more than 4 or than a large taxi or private car may be worth the cost at around USD$130 for a one way journey.
• Arriving by car and parking at Port Canaveral – Parking is available directly opposite your cruise terminal. Check which cruise terminal number your ship departs from to get the correct parking area. Then you can just make the short walk with your luggage to board your ship. • Orlando hotel to Port Canaveral – For around USD$25 per person you can book a shuttle to take you from your Orlando hotel to Port Canaveral. Rate and info are here . A taxi is the most expensive way to get there, the journey being just under one hour.

Port Tampa Bay

• Tampa International Airport to Port Tampa Bay – The airport is located just 15 minutes by car to the port. There are several companies offering airport shuttle services which we will less expensive than car if you are just 2 people travelling together.
• Arriving by car and parking at Port Tampa Bay – Garage parking is available right across from the central cruise terminal. You prepay for your parking before you travel or on the spot.
• Downtown Tampa Hotel to Port Tampa Bay – we recommend that you ask you hotel to book a taxi for you to get you to the cruise port. The journey is quite short and inexpensive. It’s also the easiest way to get there when you have luggage, so door-to-door is the way to go.

Located with a view of the Miami skyline from Biscayne Bay, the hugely popular Florida cruise port welcomed over 7 million passengers for the 2023 fiscal year, a 6.7% increase compared to 2019.

Travel options to reach your ship are numerous – shuttle services from the airport, rideshares, public transportation and personal vehicles (with plenty of parking available).

Traveling from Miami International Airport to PortMiami takes up to around 20 minutes, depending on the traffic, and the distance is just over 8 miles. A taxi can cost up to $33.

Unique amongst cruise ports in Florida, this location is a destination in and of itself. It is located in Fort Lauderdale on the east coast of Florida. Eight of the cruise terminals have public art displays by renowned artists.

Port Tampa Bay

One of the best benefits of setting sail from a smaller Florida cruise port is access to local attractions. At Port Tampa Bay, two of the city’s popular places are within walking distance of all three terminals – The Florida Aquarium and Sparkman Wharf.

The former is a top-rated facility for stewarding aquatic and terrestrial animals and their habitats “from tree level to sea level.” The wharf showcases the city’s downtown waterfront with retail shops, eateries, and live events.

Four cruise lines call Port Tampa Bay “home,” including Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line. Itineraries from this location on the western (Gulf) side of the state include voyages to several Caribbean islands and destinations in Mexico, Central America, and Venezuela.

Traveling from the Tampa International Airport to Port Tampa Bay takes approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on the traffic, which is just over 10 miles. A taxi to the port can cost around $35, which is a flat fee and could change, so always ask first.

Upon arrival, passengers can grab last-minute shopping items and some tasty treats from food trucks located along the waterfront area. Ample seating, ADA-compliant facilities, and free Wi-Fi at all terminals make this a comfortable port.

Nestled along the St. Johns River in the upper northeastern part of the state sits  JAXPORT  (or the Jacksonville Port Authority). While its main area of commerce is as a container port (Florida’s largest), one passenger terminal welcomes voyagers to their next cruise adventure.

This port, while up-to-date, feels like a vacation from another era, in a positive way! There are fewer crowds, ease of access, and only Carnival Cruise Line ships at this small Florida port.

Taxis and minivans offer services from the airport, and passengers driving their own vehicles will find the parking area is well-lighted, fenced and secured 24 hours per day. Passengers arriving at the 15,000-square-foot embarkation area can pick up drinks, snacks, and miscellaneous items at a small shop in the terminal. Ships leaving from this small port are generally boarding for four- and five-day excursions to the Bahamas. 

While traveling through the “flip side of Florida” (as Jacksonville calls itself), enjoy 22 miles of beaches and 40 miles of the Intercoastal Waterway – more shoreline than any other city in the country.

Port of Palm Beach

Discover a unique adventure at this location with only one terminal and one berth – a land and sea combination sure to please everyone in your group. Port of Palm Beach is located 80 miles north of Miami and is even further from Port Canaveral at 135 miles out.

This Florida cruise port is home to mainly one mainstream cruise line created from a partnership between the former Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line and Margaritaville at Sea. However, there is a multitude of ways to create just the right package for your next cruise vacation.

Year-round, book cruises for two-night/three-day excursions to Freeport on Grand Bahama Island aboard a Margaritaville at Sea ship. Most passengers take this opportunity to “catch a ride” on a beautifully appointed floating resort and book a stay on the island for an extended tropical getaway.

Pro Tip : Always label and prepare your luggage for easy transport . When driving, simply drive to the cruise terminal and hand over your bags. No need to fret if you need tape or a stapler — the friendly baggage handlers will assist you. Remember to show appreciation by tipping them before parking or returning your car.

Boston Cruise Port – Raymond L. Flynn Black Falcon Terminal (Massachusetts)

Simplify your cruise parking experience at the Flynn Cruiseport in the Seaport District near Boston Harbor. Park easily at Congress Street parking or take a free shuttle from your hotel. Boston Logan International Airport is just a quick 10-minute drive away. The MBTA Silver Line bus stops within one block of the terminal for even more convenience.

Parking will cost you $27 per night.

I find the Baltimore cruise port one of the most accessible places to embark in the country. Parking is $15 daily (cashless) and you can walk to the terminal after parking. There is also RV parking for $30–$40 daily, depending on the size of your rig. Royal Caribbean and Carnival both offer shuttles to and from BWI airport.

South Atlantic/Florida

Welcome to the sunniest region in the world, where cruise passengers flock in droves! With state-of-the-art terminals and buzzing activity, this destination offers an incredible array of choices. However, be prepared to master the art of patience, as navigating through crowds can be challenging. As someone who has been on 54 cruises, I can attest that more than half of my voyages have departed from these ports.

Port Canaveral (Orlando, Florida)

Prepare to be amazed! Contrary to popular belief, getting to Port Orlando (also known as Port Canaveral) requires a 48-minute drive, as Orlando is not on the coast. Despite the distance and expense of transportation (an Uber is $98), Port Orlando remains the country’s busiest and most powerful cruise port. Your best option is to take the cruise shuttle from Orlando (airport or hotel) to save the hassle of getting there, traffic, and parking fees. If you decide to drive, however, keep in mind that parking costs $17 per day, including RVs.

Discover the colossal cruise port just minutes away from Fort Lauderdale. PortMiami is a bustling hub, welcoming an impressive average of 12 cruise ships daily and 4.1 million passengers annually. Boasting 11 cruise terminals, it is the second busiest cruise port in the country.

While you can park at the port for $22 a day, I highly recommend avoiding the chaos by opting for Uber or a hotel shuttle. With my 10 years of experience living in Florida, I found navigating the port’s parking confusing and lacking proper signage. Thankfully, there are much simpler alternatives to reaching your cruise ship.

But fear not! Despite the initial challenges, PortMiami (known as the Cruise Capital of the World ) is renowned for its efficiency and seamless operation. Like a finely tuned machine, they ensure a hassle-free experience from start to finish. Indulge in the modern marvel that is PortMiami and embark on your dream cruise effortlessly.

Pro Tip: It is important to park in the garage that coincides with your terminal letter (example: Cruise Terminal B — Multi-Level Garage B); though terminals F, G, and V all use Garage G.

Secure parking at Port Everglades (4,000 spaces) runs $15 per day or $19 for oversized vehicles.

While Carnival is the only cruise line that sails from Mobile, it is an excellent option for those seeking a quick vacation option between Texas and Florida. Parking will run you $18 daily, though the closest airport is Pensacola, Florida, an hour away. This is definitely a drive to the cruise port destination. Check out the Mobile Carnival Museum or the USS Alabama in your free time.

Port Of New Orleans (NOLA, Louisiana)

A boatload of ships departs the Port of NOLA, making it the 6th busiest cruise port in the country. It is in the heart of the city with a plethora of amazing things to see and do. It is also a port for the three major river cruises (my bucket list!), which adds a feature most cruise ports don’t offer. Parking runs $25 daily at the Erato and Julia Street terminals.

Enjoy hassle-free parking for just $18 per day (discounts available for prepaying) and take advantage of the close proximity to the cruise terminal from the lots.

Port of Galveston’s only downside? The nearest major airport is 40 minutes away in Houston. However, worry not! Numerous shuttle services are available to whisk you directly to the cruise terminal.

Fun Fact: It is hard to believe that 2.2 million cruise passengers use this terminal annually.

For a city this big, I was surprised that the Port of San Francisco was not busier and bigger, but honestly, it is not one bit intimidating. Parking runs around $18 per day and there are many options for getting there, including bus, Uber, Lyft, and shuttles.

Port Of Seattle (Washington)

There are two terminals (Piers 91 and 66), with parking running $22–$27 per day, though shuttles and Lyft are the most popular ways to get there. The airport is 40 minutes away.

Carnival Cruise Line has revamped its Carnival Glory cruise ship with new features before it heads to its new home at Port Canaveral.

The 110,000-gross-ton ship is taking on three- and four-night Bahamas sailings from the port, joining three other Carnival ships. Built in 2003, the ship has a 2,980-guest passenger capacity based on double occupancy.

It recently came out of a 21-day dry dock at the Navantia shipyard in Cadiz, Spain, receiving some enhancements found on other Carnival ships.

Changes include a new casino layout, including a nonsmoking area, and a Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge that pays deference to military veterans and active-duty service members, taking over the SkyBox Sports Bar. Also added were a Dreams Photography Studio and upgrades within the spa.

When it debuted more than 20 years ago, Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, was named its godmother. Its space-themed pedigree extends to enhancements added to the youth area Camp Ocean, which now has a large video wall for its Space Cruisers program. Its curriculum was developed in partnership with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Also updated is the video arcade and redubbed The Warehouse.

The refurb also removed the aft-pool Sky Dome, while the ship received routine hotel maintenance, cosmetic enhancements, ADA compliant updates in public areas and select staterooms including the addition of Ambulatory Accessible staterooms.

Stateroom balconies were also redone with new windows and doors and every stateroom had new LED lighting and bathroom nightlights added.

The ship sailed out of Barcelona on Thursday for a 14-night transatlantic voyage to Port Canaveral.

Its first sailing from Florida will be May 2. It joins Carnival Freedom, Carnival Vista and Carnival’s Mardi Gras calling the Orlando-area port home.

Leaving is Carnival Liberty, which is moving to New Orleans.

The father of the 20-year-old passenger who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last Thursday in a reportedly drunken, impulsive leap believes his son is still alive nearly a week later.

Francel Parker, dad of missing Levion Parker, told the Daily Sun that he believes his child — whom he called a master diver — is still alive in the waters off the Bahamas.

“As soon as he went off the side, I prayed over him. I was confident the prayers I said over my son were heard. I stand on the word of God. I believe he is alive,” Francel Parker said to the local Florida paper Wednesday.

The US Coast Guard called off its search for the North Port man a day earlier.

The younger Parker allegedly jumped off the 18-story Liberty of the Seas around 4 a.m. in front of his helpless dad and younger brother after getting into an argument with his father, witnesses previously told The Post.

But Francel, who runs an AC business in Port Charlotte, told the local newspaper that he wasn’t arguing with Levion and that his son wasn’t trying to take his own life.

He said Levion is a skilled diver who works on a commercial fishing boat, and he is demanding to know how his underage son was given alcohol on the four-day cruise to Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island.

“We don’t drink,” Francel said. “I’d like to know how my son was served so much alcohol.”

Another passenger onboard the cruise who witnessed Levion’s heart-stopping jump said Francel was “fussing at him for being drunk.”

Bryan Sims told The Post that he was hanging out with Levion and his 18-year-old brother, Seth, in the hotel tub of the ship in the early hours of April 4 before they went their separate ways.

After Sims had used the restroom and dried off, he bumped into the brothers and their father near the elevators.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess,” Sims said of the moment before Parker jumped.  

“When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all,” Sims said, calling what he witnessed “surreal.”

Another cruise guest described the frantic chaos that followed.

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” Deborah Morrison told The Post.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

Francel told the Daily Sun that he threw six life rings off the ship in hopes of saving his son before the massive vessel was able to come to a stop about 20 minutes later.

Royal Caribbean said it “immediately” launched search boats to look for the 20-year-old and alerted the Coast Guard, which later took over the search.

At least 406 people on major cruise lines and ferries have gone overboard between 2000 and 2024, according to data collected by retired professor and cruise industry researcher Ross Klein.

Death rates among overboard passengers and crew members vary significantly among cruise lines, but even the safest cruise companies were only able to rescue about 40% of people who fall or jump off the ship, Klein told the Washington Post in July.

Holland America crewmember missing after going overboard before vessel docks at Port Everglades

FORT LAUDERDALE  — A search is underway for a cruise ship crewmember who went overboard while the vessel was still at sea before docking in South Florida this weekend.

Around 11:18 a.m. Saturday, deputies with the Broward County Sheriff's Office Port Everglades District responded to a report of a missing crewmember on a Holland America cruise ship.

According to Holland America, the crew member was reported missing when the Rotterdam vessel docked in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday. After reviewing the security camera video, the crew member went "purposefully overboard" around 9:45 p.m. Friday while the vessel was still en route between Cuba and Key West, the cruise line told CBS News Miami.

BSO's Homicide and Crime Scene units have responded to Port Everglades to investigate, while the U.S. Coast has been notified and is currently searching the sea for the crew member.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the team member's family at this difficult time," the cruise line shared in a statement with CBS News Miami.
