Tenders Beside Cruise Ship in George Town Grand Cayman

George Town is the capital city of Grand Cayman and serves as the primary port of entry for ships heading to the island. Known as a tender port, this means that instead of directly docking at the terminal, tender boats will ferry you from the cruise ship to the terminal.

George Town and Grand Cayman are fascinating places to explore on a cruise day in port. This article provides comprehensive information about George Town’s port, along with recommendations for shore excursions and dining options.

Map of George Town

George Town Cruise Port

George Town Grand Cayman Cruise Port Tenders

Grand Cayman is a tender port, meaning that cruise ships remain anchored in a large bay in front of George Town. Passengers are then transported to the terminals by double-decked tender boats, typically owned either locally or provided by the cruise ship.

Make sure to allocate some additional time for your return trip to the cruise ship, as long lines for the tender boats are common. These queues can cause delays in getting back to the ship. To avoid any last-minute rush and prolonged waits, consider starting your return to the ship a bit earlier than usual, compared to when at a docked port.

The George Town cruise port has three terminals: Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, North Terminal, and South Terminal. These terminals are within walking distance to each other, and are only a short walk away from most George Town attractions. Some of the cruise lines that dock at Grand Cayman include Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Norwegian, Disney, and Marella UK.

When cruising to Grand Cayman, you’ll probably arrive at the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, a spacious open area featuring tour booths, taxis, and various facilities. Nearby, you’ll also find places to eat and drink, such as Snappers, Island Squeeze, and Tortuga Rum Co.

If other cruise ships are already anchored, you may find yourself at either the North or South Terminal. Both of these terminals, situated along Harbour Dr, feature a small sheltered area for waiting and offer plenty of places to shop and eat close by.

About George Town

Harbour Drive, Grand Cayman

George Town is the capital city of the Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean Sea. It is known for its beautiful white sandy beaches, duty-free shopping, vibrant restaurant scene, and year-round tropical weather . Welcoming an impressive 1.7 million cruise passengers each year, the city ranks among the top Caribbean cruise destinations.

George Town was first settled in around 1700 and eventually became the capital of the Cayman Islands in 1831. Originally, the city was known as ‘Hogsties’ due to its many pig enclosures, and even now, the waterfront harbor is known as Hog Sty Bay. George Town became the capital of the Cayman Islands due to the exceptional quality of its natural harbor, with deep waters close to the shoreline.

Today, George Town is a vibrant capital city with a population of over 40 thousand people. It even has its own airport, Owen Roberts International Airport, with direct flights from across the US. The city’s economy largely relies on its busy finance sector, which is home to 40 of the top 50 global banks and over 600 banking companies.

How to Get Around George Town

Walking in George Town Grand Cayman

Walking is an excellent way to explore George Town, thanks to its small size and the close proximity of its key attractions. Additionally, George Town is a very safe city, with a significantly lower crime rate compared to other Caribbean destinations.

Bus stop George Town Grand cayman

You’ll find the main bus depot on Edward St, right beside Heroes Square. The bus depot is only a few minutes’ walk from the cruise port in George Town.

Rent a Car in George Town Grand Cayman

Renting a car is a great, cost-friendly transportation alternative to taxis or public buses. Car rentals provide many advantages over taxis. These include the ability to travel on your own schedule and reach destinations not easily accessible by taxis or buses.

It’s important to note that the minimum age for renting a car in Grand Cayman is 21. Since Grand Cayman is a British Territory, they drive on the left-hand side of the road. In addition, the maximum speed limit is around 40 mph (64 km/h).

Bring a mask and snorkel; spectacular marine life over the coral reefs just offshore makes this a good spot for beginners.

Crystal Caves

Pirates used to shelter from hurricanes here, and legend has it that the caves still contain hidden treasure. You’ll visit three caves, including one with a subterranean lake. Then, explore the surrounding tropical forests, where you could see brilliantly colored parrots in the trees.

Pedro St. James

Uncover some local history at Pedro St. James Castle, where the islands’ first legislative assembly was elected and the proclamation ending slavery was issued. This stately stone house at Spotts Bay dates back to 1780 and is one of the oldest buildings on the islands. Visit the mahogany interior to admire the art collection and colonial-era furniture, and stroll through lush tropical gardens for romantic views of Great Pedro Bluff.

Standing on a sandbar in warm, shallow water while docile stingrays brush gently past your legs is a memorable sensation. Stingray City lies in Grand Cayman’s North Sound, accessible by boat, and is a spot where stingrays would congregate to feed on the fish trimmings thrown overboard by local fishermen. Nowadays, the rays know they’ll get tidbits from visitors. Keep your feet on the seabed or snorkel over the sandbar, watching these graceful creatures mill around.

Dive Over Wrecks

Grand Cayman offers some of the best diving in the Caribbean, as it’s fringed by reefs and walls, and the water is crystal clear. Dive at Devil's Grotto, known for its intricate caverns and abundant marine life. Or explore the USS Kittiwake, a submarine rescue vessel that was scuttled in 2011 to create an artificial reef, now populated by eagle rays and groupers. The highest part of the wreck is just 15 feet below the surface, so experienced snorkelers can dive down as far as the wheelhouse.

Stroll Through Beautiful Gardens

The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Gardens, opened by the late queen herself in 1994, is 65 acres of woodland trails, gardens, and wetlands populated by butterflies, parrots, and other native birds. Visit the vibrant Colour Garden and the fascinating Heritage House for a glimpse into the tough life of early island settlers. You’ll also see the endemic blue iguanas basking in the sunshine; the gardens run a conservation program to protect this handsome but endangered lizard.

Top Food & Drink in Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman is one of the best Caribbean destinations for food lovers, with more than 200 restaurants serving everything from tasty Caribbean specialties to healthy spots offering fresh juice and healthy bowls. Look out for traditional Caribbean fare like beans and rice, or spicy jerk chicken. Fish rundown is a slow-cooked stew of assorted seafood with coconut milk, thyme, Scotch bonnet, and pumpkin. You’ll see conch on every menu in the form of tasty fritters, a crisp salad, or a creamy conch chowder. For dessert, try sticky toffee pudding, which consists of a rich sponge made with dates served with a toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream.

Local drinks include rum, which is distilled on the island and served in a fruity punch, among other cocktails. For something authentically local, order a mudslide, made with vodka, Kahlua, Baileys, cherry, and cinnamon.

Culture & History of Grand Cayman

Christopher Columbus reported sighting the Cayman Islands in 1503. While not home to any permanent settlements, the islands were visited by indigenous tribes and were populated by crocodiles and iguanas, with seas teeming with turtles. Turtles remain a symbol of the islands today, although their population was drastically reduced by passing ships hunting them for their meat.

Throughout the 17th century, the islands were frequented by pirates and privateers. British settlement began in the mid-17th century, primarily by individuals of British, African, and Jamaican descent. Until the mid-20th century, islanders mainly relied on fishing, subsistence farming, and employment in the merchant navy for foreign ships. However, a shift began with the opening of the first commercial bank, the establishment of hotels, the creation of the world’s first scuba diving center, and the government's encouragement of the growth of the international finance industry — which thrives today thanks to zero taxation, a British legal system, and political stability.

Although many Caymanians have emigrated to work abroad, a strong sense of national identity has been maintained, with many individuals eventually returning home. Today, the Cayman Islands enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean and remain a British Overseas Territory.

Grand Cayman Cruise Port Facilities & Location

Your cruise ship will dock in George Town Harbor and you’ll be tendered ashore to one of three tender terminals, all of them on Harbour Drive, within easy reach of the bus terminal and the main sights and shops of George Town. You’ll find souvenir shops, taxis, tourist information, and plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, although no facilities in the tender docks themselves.

Transportation in Grand Cayman

The easiest way to get around Grand Cayman if you’re not joining a shore excursion is by taxi, and you’ll find cars waiting at the port. There are no rideshare services here. Otherwise, the island has an efficient bus network, with minibusses operating multiple routes to all the main attractions. You can wait at a bus stop or simply flag the driver down.

Mopeds, bicycles, and quad bikes are available to rent, but do remember that driving is on the left here, as it is in Britain.

Shopping in Grand Cayman

George Town has a wide range of elegant shops, many specializing in high-end jewelry and luxury labels. Be on the lookout for colorful Caribbean art, antique maps, and even shipwreck coins. Local jams, spicy sauces, and rum cakes make great gifts to take home. For something really unusual, look for jewelry made from Caymanite, a gemstone that comes in a spectrum of earthy colors. It’s found only in the Cayman Islands and made into beautiful bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and cufflinks by local craftspeople.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The local currency in George Town and the rest of the Cayman Islands is the Cayman Islands dollar, which is pegged to the U.S. Dollar at $1.20 U.S. to $1 Cayman. Most places will display prices in both currencies. You’ll find that U.S. dollars are widely accepted, although you may be given change in local currency. If you do need Cayman Islands dollars during your Grand Cayman cruise, you’ll find ATMs located throughout downtown George Town.

A tip of 10% to 15% is expected when dining at restaurants in Grand Cayman, unless service is already included. Taxi drivers don’t expect tips, although you could round up the bill, and it’s customary to tip a good tour guide $5 to $10 per person.

Explore Grand Cayman on a Cruise: Top Things to Do

G rand Cayman is a popular destination for cruise ships, and for good reason. The island is home to beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy. If you're planning a cruise that stops in Grand Cayman, you'll want to make the most of your time on the island.

One of the most popular things to do in Grand Cayman is to visit Seven Mile Beach. This stunning stretch of sand is known for its crystal-clear waters and soft white sand. You can spend the day lounging on the beach, swimming in the ocean, or trying out water sports like snorkeling or jet skiing.

If you're interested in learning more about the island's history and culture, you might want to visit the Cayman Islands National Museum. Here, you can explore exhibits on the island's natural history, as well as its cultural heritage. The museum is located in George Town, the island's capital, which is also home to a variety of shops and restaurants.

Exploring the Beaches

Grand Cayman is famous for its stunning beaches, and as a cruise passenger, you have plenty of options to explore them. Here are two of my favorite beaches to visit:

Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Grand Cayman, and for good reason. As its name suggests, this beach stretches for seven miles, and it's known for its crystal-clear waters and soft, white sand. There are plenty of beach bars and restaurants along the shore, so you can grab a drink or a bite to eat while you soak up the sun. If you're feeling adventurous, you can also try water sports like snorkeling, jet skiing, or parasailing.

If you're looking for a more secluded beach experience, Rum Point is the place to go. This beach is located on the North Side of the island, and it's known for its calm, shallow waters and peaceful atmosphere. The beach is surrounded by palm trees, and there are plenty of hammocks and lounge chairs where you can relax and enjoy the view. If you're feeling hungry, be sure to check out the Wreck Bar, which serves up delicious seafood and cocktails.

No matter which beach you choose to visit, be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. And don't forget to take plenty of photos to remember your day in paradise!

Adventurous Activities

If you're looking for an adrenaline rush on your Grand Cayman cruise, you're in luck! There are plenty of adventurous activities to choose from.

Scuba Diving

As a scuba diver, Grand Cayman is a dream destination. The crystal-clear waters are home to an abundance of marine life, including colorful coral reefs, sea turtles, and even shipwrecks. I recommend booking a guided dive with a reputable company to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Some popular dive sites include:

  • Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto
  • The Wreck of the Cali
  • The Kittiwake

Stingray City

Swimming with stingrays might sound intimidating, but it's actually a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Stingray City is a sandbar located in the middle of the North Sound, where you can interact with dozens of friendly Southern Stingrays. I suggest booking a tour with a local guide who can provide information about the stingrays' behavior and habitat. Some tours even include snorkeling at nearby coral reefs.

Remember to always prioritize safety and respect for the environment when participating in adventurous activities.

Historical Sites

When visiting Grand Cayman on a cruise, there are a few historical sites that are worth checking out.

Pedro St. James Castle

Pedro St. James Castle is a historic site that offers a glimpse into the island's past. The castle was built in the late 1700s and served as a plantation home for the wealthy Watler family. Today, the castle has been restored and turned into a museum that showcases the island's history.

Visitors can take a guided tour of the castle and learn about the island's early settlers, the history of the Watler family, and the role that Pedro St. James played in the Cayman Islands' political history. The castle also offers stunning views of the island and the Caribbean Sea.

Cayman Islands National Museum

The Cayman Islands National Museum is another great historical site to visit on a cruise to Grand Cayman. The museum is located in George Town and features exhibits on the island's natural history, cultural heritage, and maritime history.

One of the highlights of the museum is the exhibit on the island's shipwrecks. Grand Cayman is known as the “Wreck Capital of the Caribbean,” and the museum has a collection of artifacts from some of the most famous shipwrecks in the area.

The museum also has exhibits on the island's early settlers, the history of the Cayman Islands' government, and the island's role in the slave trade. Overall, the Cayman Islands National Museum is a great place to learn about the island's rich history and culture.

Local Cuisine Tasting

One of the best ways to experience the culture of Grand Cayman is by indulging in the local cuisine. As a food enthusiast, I highly recommend trying out the island's unique dishes during your cruise stop.

First on the list is the famous “Cayman-style” turtle stew. This dish is a local delicacy that has been enjoyed for generations. The turtle meat is slow-cooked with vegetables and spices, resulting in a savory and flavorful stew. It's definitely worth a try if you're feeling adventurous.

Another must-try dish is the “heavy cake.” This dessert is a dense, sweet cake made with cassava, coconut, and sugar. It's often served with a side of fresh fruit or ice cream. The heavy cake is a perfect way to end a meal and satisfy your sweet tooth.

For those who prefer seafood, the island offers a wide variety of fresh fish dishes. Some of the most popular options include mahi-mahi, snapper, and lobster. These dishes are often seasoned with local spices and served with sides such as plantains or rice and beans.

In addition to trying out the local cuisine at restaurants, I also recommend visiting the local markets and food stands to get a taste of the street food. Some of the best options include jerk chicken, conch fritters, and fish tacos.

Overall, experiencing the local cuisine is a must-do activity during your cruise stop in Grand Cayman. With so many delicious options to choose from, you're sure to find a dish that satisfies your taste buds.

Here's my personal experience on a one day trip to Grand Cayman on a Carnival cruise:

We were up early for one of our excursions–a snorkeling shipwreck “adventure.” Everyone that I have known who went to Grand Cayman hung out with some huge stringrays. We just couldn't do it. I am totally creeped out by that idea. We snorkeled right off the coast and it was so beautiful over the reef. There were only about 6 people on this excursion, it was nice and peaceful! We saw the shipwreck and heard stories about the Cali.

Snorkeling with the cruise ship in the distance

We hit Hammerheads for lunch and a bucket of Cay Brew beer. Man, Grand Cayman is expensive. Just a little FYI. It's like America and given the chance to visit again, I would probably pass. I had a mahi sandwich for a million dollars and then we hit Dunkin Donuts for a coffee and wireless internet break. Apparently everyone else had the same idea as the DD was poppin' with cruise staff and tourists logging on with their laptops, phones, etc.

Hammerheads

Heading back to the boat via tender

We boarded the boat and took a massive nap. We got up for more trivia, a pitcher of beer, tv trivia, and peeped into a Motown show.

Beer! We found a sports bar on board that had a Miller Lite pitcher special. Sold.

For dinner, I had seafood pasta and I'm pretty sure it was awesome. I definitely passed out by 10 p.m. Again. Sigh.

And, if you're wondering how I remember all this stuff months later… I took detailed notes on my iPhone just for this reason!

Port Mobile cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Mobile, Alabama. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Mobile AL is Alabama USA's only seaport. It is located on Mobile Bay (Gulf of Mexico's inlet) which is formed by Fort Morgan Peninsula (on the east) and Dauphin Island (on the west). The city covers an area of approx 413 km2 (159 mi2) and has population around 195,000 (metro around 415,000).

Among the city's most popular tourist attractions are Bellingrath Gardens and Home, antebellum home Oakleigh Mansion, Cox-Deasy Cottage Museum and Battleship USS Alabama. Fort Conde is a partial replica of an original 18th-century French fort. Fort Gaines is the battle site of the famed Battle of the Bay in August 1864. Mobile is the birthplace of the USA's Mardi Gras (aka America's Family Mardi Gras).

Wildlife fans should visit Audubon Bird Sanctuary on Dauphin Island. Another fresh idea is boat touring Mobile Bay's estuary, home to over 250 species of birds, 230 species of fish and wildlife, including black bears, alligators, bald eagles, osprey.

Port Mobile Alabama

Port Mobile is a deepwater seaport (Alabama's only one) ranked in 2010 as the USA's 12th largest cargo port by tonnage (shipping trade volume over 55,7 million tons). The port is along Mobile River - where the river empties into the bay.

The port has deep-water terminals which all have direct access to Alabama's inland and intracoastal waterways. These waterways also serve USA's Great Lakes, and the rivers Ohio and Tennessee (via Tenn-Tom / Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway with length 377 km / 234 mi).

The port and all its facilities are owned and managed by Alabama State Port Authority. All public terminals can handle various types of cargo ships (including container / boxships , bulk and breakbulk carriers, Ro-Ro ships (roll-on / roll-off). The port also has private bulk terminal operators. All container, general cargo and bulk cargo terminals have dirrect access to two US interstate railway systems plus 5 "Class I" US railroads. The CG Railway (terminal railroad) operates from the Mobile Alabama port a rail ferry service to Coatzacoalcos (Mexico).

Mobile is USA's largest seaport for handling breakbulk forest products. McDuffie Terminal is among USA's largest coal terminals. It is also the country's largest import coal terminal. Mobile AL was ranked USA's 4th largest coal export port for 2012, with the majority of the exports being shipped to Europe and South America.

In the period 2010-2015, the port invested over USD 0,5 billion in redevelopment projects, including port infrastructure improvements, land acquisitions, warehousing, constructing new rail depots and inter-modal yards, also improvements and enhancements of cargo terminals (serving oil tankers and gas carriers) and cargo shipping vessels (containerized, bulk, breakbulk). A new rail ferry terminal and a new container terminal were also built. A new steel terminal was also built to serve Calvert Alabama's stainless and carbon steel processing facility. The McDuffie Coal Terminal was expanded.

On April 20, 2017, APM Terminals announced that THE Alliance ( container shipping companies group ) launches in May 2017 the AL4 trade route between Port Mobile and ports in Northern Europe. The AL4 route is a weekly container vessel service and links the ports Mobile AL,  Southampton England ,  Antwerp Belgium ,  Bremerhaven Germany ,  Le Havre (Paris France) , Veracruz Mexico, Altamira Mexico,  Houston TX ,  NOLA New Orleans , Mobile AL. APM Terminals Mobile opened in 2008 and reported a record year in 2016 (handling 277,307 TEU-containers).

On March 20, 2020, was completed APM Terminals Mobile's quay extension. The expanded berth now can handle two boxships (max 10K-TEU capacity each) simultaneously. The container dock extension was part of a USD 450 million project aimed to increase the terminal's capacity by upgrading and expanding all the port's marine and rail intermodal terminals. By this project, in 2020 also started works on shipping channel dredging and harbor improvements.

Mobile cruise port

Port Mobile ceased cruise shipping operations in October 2011, when  Carnival Cruise Line (homeporting vessels here since 2004) relocated  Carnival Elation  and stopped using the port, mainly due to rising fuel costs. In February 2013, Carnival Triumph  was stranded at sea for 4 days. Then the port opened its cruise dock for the disabled vessel, where its nearly 4000 passengers were disembarked.

  • In late-September 2015, the city promised to put up USD 200,000 per quarter (USD 0,8 million per year) for marketing. The marketing fund was established with the city's money from parking revenue and used for marketing cruises leaving from Mobile. It was estimated that from parking fees, terminal / port fees and passenger charges, the city will have an annual profit ~USD 2 million on cruise ship operations. It was also announced that starting November 2016, Carnival Fantasy will offer a year-long 4-day and 5-day cruise schedule to Mexico leaving roundtrip from "Mobile Cruise Terminal".
  • In September-October 2016, the port invested USD 4 million in new TSA equipment (security and baggage screening machines) installed on the terminal's 2nd floor.
  • On November 10, 2015, Carnival Fantasy started its homeporting/turnaround service to Mexico. The 4-day itinerary departed Thursdays and visited Cozumel . The 5-day itineraries departed Mondays and Saturdays, visiting Cozumel and Costa Maya or  Progreso .
  • In November 2016, Carnival Corporation signed a 13-month contract (thru December 2017) with Port Mobile AL. As all 2017 cruises were booked within a month, Carnival allowed travel agents to book itineraries out of Mobile into April 2019.
  • In August 2017, Carnival signed a 1-year contract extension with the port (through December 2019). In October 2019, Carnival signed a 3-year homeporting extension (through November 2022) for Carnival Fantasy.

Since 2018, Carnival offers 7-day roundtrip departures from Mobile AL to destinations no longer limited to Caribbean Mexico. On April 25, 2017, the company officially announced that Carnival Fantasy will offer new itineraries with call ports in the Bahamas, Key West Florida , Grand Cayman Island/George Town , Costa Rica, Belize, Panama Canal . The new itineraries are longer than the ship's usual 4- and 5-night roundtrips to Mexico.

Since August 2021, Carnival Sensation is homeported in Mobile AL for Western Caribbean itineraries: 4-night (to Cozumel) and 5-night (Cozumel and Progreso). (For the first time ever) the boat docked in Mobile (at Alabama Cruise Terminal) on May 14, 2021.
