Fincantieri and cruise ships: a success story from across the sea. By the beginning of the 20th century the Group was already making waves around the world for its skill in building ships that were unique in terms of design, elegance, interior design and engineering solutions. Its leadership was underpinned by its having built the best-known and most iconic Italian transatlantic liner: the Rex. Built at the Genoa shipyard, the Rex is remembered for winning the Blue Riband in 1933, having beaten the record for crossing the Atlantic. The Company was one of the first in the 1980s to take up the opportunity of the new trend in the cruise tourist industry and it approached the market by drawing on the experience it had acquired in previous decades as builder of transatlantic liners. It was at the start of the ’90s when the Crown Princess was delivered, a sparkling gem that was to become the stuff of legend, with its dolphin-like silhouette designed by Renzo Piano.

Today the Company is the undisputed leader in designing and building dream ships for the most important cruise line companies. With over 100 vessels built since 1990, Fincantieri is the increasingly important market leader in all segments, as the figures confirm: one third of the world's cruise ship fleet capability came out of our shipyards, and we carry 8 million passengers a year around the world, or one in every three cruisegoers.

To accomplish and keep up these record-breaking achievements we have focused on technological innovation and on our skill in ensuring that functionality and on-board pleasure are in perfect harmony, using novel forms and design. We can already see the future. We develop new generations of ships to respond to and anticipate demand from the world’s fleet owners.

Shipbuilding

Cruise shipbuilding industry worldwide - statistics & facts

While the majority of the commercial shipbuilding activity takes place in Asia, the passenger shipbuilding segment is headquartered in Europe. China, Japan, and South Korea, the world’s largest shipbuilding countries , have outperformed Europe in most of the commercial segments, but European shipyards still excel in niche markets such as the cruise, yacht, and military segments. These sectors require an extremely high degree of workforce specialization as well as sophisticated technologies. Within Europe, the main shipyards for cruise vessels are located in Italy, Germany, France, and Finland. Fincantieri is the largest cruise ship builder worldwide, providing vessels for some major cruise lines such as MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises. Despite its status, Fincantieri is not spared the competitive pressure exerted by Asian shipyards. Its plan to merge with France’s largest shipyard, Chantiers de l’ Atlantique, is currently being reviewed by EU antitrust regulators. This move would leave the German group Meyer Werft as its only European competitor. Consolidation in the shipbuilding industry has been an ongoing trend over the past few years: the number of active shipyards worldwide has halved between 2014 and 2019, mainly as a result of cyclical demand. This is particularly true of the cruise building industry, which has seen its orders decline after peaking in 2017. Specialization is another prominent trend in the global shipbuilding industry. Within the cruise market, the river cruise segment is booming, particularly in Europe. The number of international passengers in European river cruises doubled between 2013 and 2018, and the German market has seen its revenue steadily increase since 2014. After COVID-19, European shipyards are trying to find ways to cope with the reduction in demand. As of 2019, there were 114 cruise ships in the global order book , but shipyards are unlikely to receive new orders. To compensate for the plunge in demand for cruise vessels, the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Association (VSM) has called for the implementation of an EU-wide public vessel program. Among its objectives, such a program could also see fleet renewal interventions for European commercial vessels. This would come at the right time, as the commercial sector is under pressure to conform to the IMO 2020 regulations with interventions such as scrubber retrofits . Making an Icon

Making an Icon: Icon of the Seas

Royal caribbean's biggest and boldest designed cruise ship..

By Amanda Mesa | Published on October 12, 2022

Icon of the Seas℠ is not just another cruise ship, it is an extraordinary new class of adventure built with technological innovation in mind. With this video series, “Making an Icon,” Royal Caribbean takes you behind the scenes on delivering the world’s best vacation. The forthcoming Icon of the Seas℠ — is poised to be its greatest creation yet promising bolder-than-ever onboard experiences, cutting-edge design and milestone advances in the cruise line's push for cleaner energy. Discover all that is to come from the very first ship in an all-new class.

"The driving force behind everything we do at Royal Caribbean International is to deliver the best vacations on earth," says Claudia Diaz-Gonzalez, associate vice president of product development at Royal Caribbean International. Icon is no exception. As one of the brand's most anticipated new cruise ships, it will launch the all-new Icon Class in 2024, shattering records and redefining what a family vacation can be.

Behind the Design

Making an Icon Construction

What bold ideas go into creating the largest cruise ship in the world? The journey to turn the vision behind Icon into reality has spanned for more than five years with endless hours of ideation. In order to actualize this new concept, the team leveraged mountains of guest data as well as the creativity, ideas and expertise of leading innovators, artists, architects, industrial engineers and designers from around the world.

Anna Drescher, the cruise line's manager of architectural design, newbuilding and innovation calls Icon of the Seas℠ a "white-paper ship" because it began with a blank sheet of sketching paper. "It truly is starting fresh," she says.

During the first few months of ideation for the cruise ship, the team went wild with ideas and what-ifs, taking care not to limit any creativity. During this phase, there was no such thing as "impossible" — every idea was carefully considered and went into shaping the vision behind the world's first Icon Class cruise ship. Brainstorming and product development sessions focused on the guest experience first and foremost, leveraging a staggering wealth of data gathered through surveys, guest correspondence and conversations onboard.

"Everything — every ship, every experience — starts with the guest," says Tim Klauda, vice president of product development at Royal Caribbean International.

Jennifer Goswami, director of product development at Royal Caribbean International, adds that walking the ship through the guest lens played a huge role in the innovation process and led to the ultimate design and vision for Icon of the Seas℠ . One key goal was to combine the best elements of a broad range of vacation styles and experiences — including city getaways, amusement parks, beach retreats, all-inclusive resorts and more — into one unforgettable experience at sea.

Pillars of an Icon

Making an Icon Aerial

The next step in the journey to “Making an Icon” was to translate all those pie-in-the-sky ideas and guest needs into a strategic framework with five key pillars. The first was unrivaled water experiences . It aimed to tie every element of the ship back into the surrounding sea, which is ever-present during a cruise getaway. The second pillar focused on adrenaline-amping thrills and leveling up the cruise line's well-known penchant for exhilarating onboard activities and attractions .

The third pillar emphasized maximizing family-friendly vacation experiences by creating even more opportunities for bonding than ever before. The fourth pillar was all about offering a more diverse and expansive lineup of sensational cruise entertainment — a feat that Royal Caribbean's award-winning entertainment team is well-equipped to deliver.

Finally, the fifth pillar celebrated food and beverage at sea , promising to build upon the cruise line's robust collection of foodie-approved dining concepts by introducing new, never-before-seen restaurants and offerings.

Travel + Leisure’s 2024 It List.

Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. T+L's editors have traveled to countries all over the world, having flown, sailed, road tripped, and taken the train countless miles. They've visited small towns and big cities, hidden gems and popular destinations, beaches and mountains, and everything in between. With a breadth of knowledge about destinations around the globe, air travel, cruises, hotels, food and drinks, outdoor adventure, and more, they are able to take their real-world experience and provide readers with tried-and-tested trip ideas, in-depth intel, and inspiration at every point of a journey.

Elizabeth Rhodes/Travel + Leisure

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

These models are only started when the customer commissions a model - truly custom built and one of a kind. As a widely recognized leader in handmade tall ships, our skilled master model shipwrights produce our cruise ship and ocean liner models in magnificent detail - with hand laid decks, counter sunk windows, and tarred standing rigging. Each model is a true museum quality masterpiece you'll be proud to own and display.

Each model comes fully assembled with a solid hull - hand carved from kiln-dried mahogany.  Other parts are made from a variety of woods, putty, resin and metals.  Every model includes pedestals, a polished mahogany base board, and a name plate. Keel block mounting is available upon request.

The build time is generally 14-16 weeks from receipt of the order and deposit. Our ordering procedure is a 50% deposit with the commissioning, with the balance due prior to shipping.  When your model is complete, we will take a series of photos of your model and send them to you for final review and approval – so you know exactly what your model will look like and allow for any necessary modifications. Cruise Deck Plans, Ship Reviews

CruiseMapper logo

CruiseMapper's deckplan services provide cruise deck plans reviews integrated with newest deck layouts and deck legends (company's cabin categories as names and color codes). Each page has a separate link to the vessel's passenger cabins' review that provides information on all its staterooms (amenities, cabin types, grades) with usually included floor plans and photos. Here you can search for a particular ship (via the above search bar) or you can skip the introduction/explanations and go down directly to our list of large passenger ships' deckplan pages .

Along with regularly updated officially issued cruise line deck plans, CruiseMapper's deck plans pages also show statistical information on passenger shipping vessels (including ferries ). All pages are organized as "ship review" articles. You will know what is what, where (location on deck), serving what (functions), operates how and when (review of all onboard venues as activities, amenities, operational hours, special features).

Most of CruiseMapper's ship deck plan pages also review the vessels' newest upgrades/latest refurbishment changes. All dining venues (restaurants and food bars) reviews also contain basic menu/cuisine information, and whether the dining options are complimentary, at fee/surcharge PP or a-la-carte-priced.

All deck plan pages include basic statistical information, such as:

  • year built, vessel class and sisterships (among the fleets of all lines)
  • total number of cabins, plus number per type (Inside, OceanView/RiverView, Balcony, Suite)
  • capacity - passengers (normal and max) and crew capacity
  • number of passenger-accessible decks, number (if any) of swimming pools and whirlpools (hot tubs), passenger elevators, water-slides

On some boats is additionally provided information regarding name origin/meaning, service history, fun facts.

Cruise deck plans (floor layouts) updates

Like all things in life, cruise deck plans do change over time. Often, cruise companies/charter operators change facilities and public venues - their location, type (services and amenities), size, or names. Other changes may relate to new cabin categories.

Often, after a major refurbishment, to the ship are added:

  • new passenger cabins
  • new dining venues - specialty restaurants, bars, lounges, etc
  • new facilities - aqua park, waterslide(s), Spa, pool(s) / Jacuzzi(s), outdoor movie theater, etc
  • or - simply change the names of the existing ones.

We are responsible for all these deckplan changes and keep our deck layouts and reviews regularly updated and correct.

Cruise ship deck plan reviews

In each of CruiseMapper's deck plans you will find a detailed list of all staterooms and facilities on the vessel. This information generally includes:

  • vessel details - year built, last refurbished (and/or scheduled refurbishment), capacity (passengers plus crew)
  • total number of passenger cabins, launderettes (passenger use self-service laundry /if any), onboard credit kiosks (self-service money transfer), photo kiosks
  • dining room(s), buffet restaurant, specialty restaurant(s) /at surcharge per person or with a la carte menus, dinner club, fast food bars/stations
  • theatre/main show lounge
  • lounges and bars, conference/meeting room(s)
  • casino, video games arcade, special gaming room (like F1 car simulator)
  • swimming pool(s) and whirlpools (hot tubs)
  • Spa and Fitness complex (wellness facility), jogging/walking track, roller-skating track, sports court(s)
  • cinema, library, art gallery, photo gallery
  • atrium/lobby area with reception desk, shore excursions desk, duty-free shops and boutiques
  • Promenade Deck (an outdoor area that fully or partially encircles the ship)
  • kids and teen club lounges and playing zones (on some ships with pool/whirlpool), missing on adult-only vessels
  • Aqua Park with slide(s) - on the largest liners only
  • unique facilities - such as rock-climbing wall(s), ice-skating track(s), Zip-line, rotating panoramic capsules, glass-floor walking paths, bumping cars, skydive and surf simulators, F1/Sports Car simulator, bungee trampoline, and many other truly bizarre cruise ship design inventions.

CruiseMapper's dedicated staff does regular updates that reflect all floor plan changes (when officially announced by the companies). We do this job properly - so you can count on us, and the information we provide to be accurate and up-to-date.

Follows the long list of (internal) links, which redirect to the vessel's deck plan review. Know that these are only ocean-going ships.

To see all riverboat deck plans, you'll have to follow CruiseMapper's river cruise lines links and explore the company's fleet. Our list of river cruise companies includes AmaWaterways , ACL-American Cruise Lines , AQV/AQSC-American Queen Voyages/Steamboat Company , Arosa , Avalon Waterways , CroisiEurope , Emerald Waterways , Grand Circle , Luftner-Amadeus , Scenic , Scylla , Uniworld , Viking , also our hubs for River Cruises (smaller operators, time-chartered boats), Russian River Cruises (boats in Russian Federation) and Nile River Cruises (boutique hotel ships sailing in Egypt).

Note: The following list of cruise line deck plans includes only CruiseMapper's largest companies' fleets and only ocean-going vessels. To access our full deckplan database (including small-fleet shipping companies , cruiseferries and riverboats ) use the search box at page top .

The 10 Biggest Cruise Ships in the World

Where to float on the biggest boats.

E very vessel that's once held the title of "biggest cruise ship" has one thing in common: It is a destination in and of itself. Of course, these enormous passenger cruise ships also transport guests to thrilling ports, exotic islands and remote locations too. It's almost as if you could live on a cruise ship !

These massive ships each have so much going on: theater and music on a multitude of stages, water slides, roller coasters and go-kart tracks, zip lines, ice skating rinks, laser tag arenas—you name it. There are also hidden cruise features waiting to be discovered and more restaurants than you will ever need to feed yourself. They are, simply put, awe-inspiring creations. Have you ever thought about how cruise ships float ?

One of the most important cruise tips for vacationing on one of these big boats is to accept that you won't be able to do it all on your first visit. Thankfully, with many itineraries to choose from, you can sail on the largest cruise ship again and again, learn cruise ship code words and have new experiences every single time you're on board one of these massive ships.

What is largest cruise ship in the world?

The current reigning champion is Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas. But next year, there will be a brand-new biggest cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas . Planned with 20 decks, 2,805 staterooms, seven pools and nine hot tubs, the future largest ship in the world is currently being built in Finland. Here are the details about the biggest and grandest ships to sail on.

Wonder of the Seas

Cruise line: Royal Caribbean

Length: 1,188 feet

Width: 215 feet

Guest capacity: 7,084

A true wonder, the current biggest ship in the world delights guests every week with a feast of activities, shows, meals and memories. Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , an Oasis-class ship that is a city at sea, has 16 guest decks, 2,204 crew members from every corner of the planet and more than 10 bars and 20 dining destinations—nine of which are complimentary. Curiously, even though the Icon of the Seas will eventually take the mantle as the largest cruise ship, Wonder will still have more staterooms than its new big sister, a whopping 2,867 of them.

It also features a carousel on a real boardwalk, a dry slide that twists down 10 decks, surfing simulators, a laser tag arena, an ice skating rink and a zip line that spans the interior width of the ship. It also has interior rooms with balconies that look out over the restaurant and a tree-lined neighborhood that looks like Central Park. Wonder of the Seas will soon lose its crown as the biggest cruise ship in the world, but it'll never lose its ability to provide unique vacations thanks to affordable cruises for every kind of traveler.

World Europa

Cruise line: MSC

Length: 1,093 feet

Width: 154 feet

Guest capacity: 6,762

MSC is not only a privately held shipping company, the largest in the world, they are also the maker of some of the largest cruise ships in the world. The World Europa , which took to the sea for the first time in 2022, is currently escorting passengers all over the Mediterranean, using one of the cleanest marine fuels to do so.

The World Europa features some of the best rooms on a cruise ship, thanks to having the most cabins with a balcony. It also has the world's longest dry slide at sea, taking adventurous cruisers down 12 decks in a shiny, twisting stainless steel tube, and bumper cars in a SportsPlex arena that also hosts rollerblading—not at the same time, however. People looking for something a little less dramatic will enjoy six pools, some surrounded by tropical greenery, 14 whirlpools and MSC's first-ever department store at sea. Finally, you'll never go hungry on this ship , given its 10 restaurants, including four main dining rooms and three buffets.

Cruise line: P&O Cruises

Length: 1,130 feet

Width: 138 feet

Guest capacity: 6,685

Whether you want the sunshine of the Caribbean or the culture found in and around Mediterranean ports, Arvia is P&O's largest cruise ship and one of the biggest cruise ships in the world, with 1,800 crew members, a three-screen cinema complex, a wide range of staterooms to choose from and four pools, including an infinity pool with a swim-up bar. There are also nearly two dozen whirlpool spas, a sauna, steam room and a hydrotherapy pool.

This means that whether you're taking a singles cruise or have children in tow—the Arvia is a family-friendly ship with age-specific kids clubs on board—serious rest and relaxation are definitely on the agenda. Then, when you're feeling spry and ready for some adventure during your vacation at sea, you can try an escape room or ropes course, play in the sports arena or strut your stuff in a dance class.

Costa Toscana

Cruise line: Costa Cruises

Length: 1,105 feet

Width: 137 feet

Guest capacity: 6,600

A sister to the Smeralda , the Costa Toscana became the fleet's largest cruise ship when it took to the water in March 2022. The ship uses LNG propulsion engines to make sea travel more sustainable, both while cruising and in ports of call around the world. An international crew of 1,678 works to deliver dream vacations for up to 6,600 passengers who will love to discover all there is to do, see and experience on board.

The ship has 1,550 staterooms ranging from interior cabins to elaborate suites, a baker's dozen pools and whirlpools, and a total of 20 restaurants, bars and lounges. Costa's new flagship vessel is a smart city at sea, offering subtly high-tech sailings that provide fun for the whole family, thanks to Peppa Pig character parties, an aqua park with water slides and a mind-bending skywalk 213 feet above the ocean! So book a vacation on one of the largest cruise ships in the world, then pack your cruise ducks and your appetite for learning how to cook at Toscana 's Food LAB cooking school, among other adventures at sea.

Celebration

Cruise line: Carnival

Guest capacity: 6,631

As cruise lines jockey for position at the top of the biggest cruise ship in the world leaderboard, the original family-fun ships are also getting larger. A total of 1,735 international crew, famously considered the best in the business, will ensure that every family's cruise on the Celebration not only maximizes the fun but also the memories, and all at some of the most affordable prices in the cruise industry.

This ship has BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, Dr. Seuss children's themed cruises with character appearances, and incredible water parks with multiple slides. Delicious food is made fast-and-fresh at Guy's Burger Joint, Shaq's Big Chicken and the Seafood Shack, as well as tasty street-food carts located near the pools. Plus, with all the extra space on the largest cruise ship in their fleet, Carnival's Playlist Productions has more stages to dazzle you and your kids with famously fantastic live music and musical theater.

Cruise line: Norwegian

Length: 1,094 feet

Width: 136 feet

Guest capacity: 3,998

With 1,700 crew members and more than 2,000 staterooms, including suites in The Haven—Norwegian's luxurious, private and tranquil ship-within-a-ship concept high atop the ship, which comes with 24-hour butler service and its own lavish sundeck—the Encore ranks among the largest cruise ships in the world. Curiously, this vessel from 2019 is still the largest in the Norwegian fleet! Both Prima  and the forthcoming Viva were built after Encore but are considerably smaller in size, bucking the cruise industry trend of "bigger is better."

Encore shines as a superior and super big ship, the fourth in the Breakaway Plus class, and features a multi-deck go-kart track, the Cavern Club music venue, fashioned after the famous Liverpool room where The Beatles became big, a virtual-reality gaming room, an outdoor laser-tag arena and some of the best food at sea. No doubt, this will become one of every passenger's favorite cruises.

Symphony of the Seas

Width: 216 feet

Guest capacity: 6,680

None of the many all-inclusive cruises take place on the largest cruise ships, but you may be forgiven for thinking you're enjoying an all-inclusive experience on Symphony of the Seas . The ship's many spectacular activities include a zip line that soars above the boardwalk many decks below, an old-fashioned carousel, Broadway-style theater shows, surfing simulators and the 10-story Abyss dry slide. There's also delicious food all over the ship that is 100% complimentary. And while you may fly on the zip line over and over again, you'll probably still wonder, Why do cruise ships have wings ?

After its maiden voyage in April 2018, Symphony was the biggest cruise ship in the world. But because of its ingenious neighborhood concept, guests rarely feel overcrowded. Seven distinct areas carve up the ship into unique spaces to play, eat, stroll, sleep and enjoy live entertainment, and the traffic flows brilliantly to make passengers feel as though they're on a more intimate ship and not cruising with upward of 6,680 other people in more than 2,700 staterooms, some of which are interior cabins with balconies that boast views of the Central Park neighborhood's greenery and eateries.

Cruise line: AIDA

Guest capacity: 6,654

While American travelers looking to cruise the Caribbean may not encounter her, the AIDAnova is not only the largest cruise ship in the AIDA fleet, she's also a revolutionary lady. The ship's Four Elements adventure deck, with its three water slides and climbing garden under the dome of a retractable glass roof, drops jaws on every sailing. The ship's more than 2,600 staterooms with 20 different types, ranging from a glorious two-deck penthouse to budget-friendly interior cabins, allow guests to sleep well and arrive in port well rested, and the two-deck spa offering 80 different treatments provides even more healing and luxury.

But AIDAnova is also impressive because it made history as the world's first cruise ship to be powered in port and at sea by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the world's cleanest burning fossil fuel. It's important that big ships can be more sustainable, but did you ever wonder why there are big balls on cruise ships ?

Sun Princess

Cruise line: Princess

Length: 1,133 feet

Guest capacity: 4,300

The Love Boat is getting much, much bigger! Yes, this is the namesake ship from the beloved '70s TV show. With 2,150 cabins, the Sun Princess is close to carrying 4,300 passengers to Europe for its inaugural season later this year. And then all around the world, people will be asking, "Why do cruise ships have to stop in Canada?"

The third ship in the history of the fleet to be graced with the iconic name, the S un Princess is poised to be a fan favorite. There are more than 29 bars, lounges and restaurants on board, with the Sea View Terrace and Bar ensconced in glass at the top and front of the ship, book-ended by the Wake View Terrace at the back, which has a stunning infinity pool hanging off the edge. Drawing inspiration from the tiered terraces of Santorini, Greece, this evocative area will have an indoor/outdoor pool to enjoy supreme relaxation during the day. But once the sun says goodbye, the pool becomes a stage and the dome above transforms into an entertainment venue with eye-popping lighting effects.

Length: 1,085 feet

Width: 141 feet

Guest capacity: 6,334

Come June 2023, one of the newest and biggest cruise ships at sea will be carrying eager pasengers, and more than 1,700 dedicated crew members, to world-class destinations in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. While on board the Euribia , cruisers will enjoy a massive amount of personal space (100-plus square feet per person) at any one of five unique pools, including one of the most intricate waterparks at sea, covering more than 10,000 square feet.

These watery areas of rest, relaxation and revelry will comfortably accommodate more than 1,000 guests at a time. Indoors, a 360-foot-long Mediterranean-style promenade is lined with myriad shops, along with some of the 20 bars and 10 restaurants found on the ship. It also features a domed LED screen that magically displays the sky and other animations throughout the day and night. MSC continues to be a favorite cruise line of environmentalist travelers looking to ease their mind and minimize their footprint, as the Euribia has an advanced onboard wastewater treatment system that doesn't allow any water to leave the ship without being treated and cleaned.

Creating a map image of cruise stops

I wanted to create a map 'picture' of our cruise stops so that you could see where on the globe our cruise traveled (how many people could place Dubrovnik on a map? :-) and have it printed along with the pictures of the trip in a photobook of the cruise.

I was going to use Google Maps - My Maps - but found it difficult. I found scribblemaps which made it easier. The image below is from Scribblemaps for our upcoming Celebrity Century Med cruise.

I used the 'hybrid' map setting n it - the blue ocean will go good with the Med theme of the trip...:-)

Scribblemaps has a 'save as jpg' setting which makes it easy to get a copy of it, although the resolution is not that great (the photo book software I use (Mypublisher) gives me a warning about it.

Has anyone else done something similar? Is there better mapping tools to create a map image out there?

Yes, your GPS software is much better (unless you don't have one). Garmin's map print outs are very good quality.

Hey Karen - I have a Garmin GPS in my car but I don't understand how you would get a map from it to the PC or even get a print out from it. And then how would you annotate it?

And I don't really want a printout.

Ideally it would be a digital image for use in a photobook...

I'm not sure there's a quick and easy 1-step solution for what you're looking for. I think what you've already found with Scribblemaps is pretty good.

Looks like with Scribblemaps, you can create a JPEG image of the map with dimensions up to 1143 x 653 pixels (width x height). I'm not sure how large a photo you need for your photobook. Check to see what the dimensions are for your photobook (or, actually, the dimensions of the space that this photo map would be in your photo book). You might want to go to your local photo place and print the JPEG image using those same dimensions, just to see how well it prints out. If the print looks acceptable to you, then chances are it'll probably print just as well in your photobook.

If you've got a Garmin GPS unit for your car, you probably have a menu option that tells it to keep a track log . The track log is a simple text file containing a log all your GPS coordinates throughout your entire trip. Every few seconds, your Garmin will record your GPS coordinates into this track log.

If you're interested in viewing the track log, you can connect your Garmin GPS unit onto your computer. From there, you download the track log onto your computer.

At this point, the track log is still just a text file. To view the GPS coordinates on an actual map, you can use several mapping programs. I like to use Google Earth (a free software program from Google), where you can open your track log in Google Earth, and you get a visual plot of your trip on an actual map.

To save the map, I think the free version of Google Earth limits you to a 1000-pixel width (slightly smaller than the maximum width you can get with Scribblemaps). If you decide to buy Google Earth Pro ($399!), then you can save a 4800-pixel width image of your map, which should be plenty of pixels for your photo book.

You can also use online programs like GPS Visualizer ( http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map_input?form=google ) to upload your track log, and it will produce a visual plot of your trip on Google Maps. With GPS Visualizer, you can specify how large a map you want it to create (ex. 2000-pixel width, and auto height). But then, I think you'd have to do a screen capture to actually save the image.

Once you get the image of your trip map, how do you add labels to it? I would probably bring it into Photoshop (or any similar image editing program) and add the labels manually onto the image.

I know there's probably an easier way of doing this, but that's probably how I personally would do it.

Hope that helps. Let us know what you end up doing.

You need a handheld. I don't think that the car models come with the Way Point Management software, unfortunately. They are high quality images.

I am glad you like it it is easy, and very useful. maps your trips as a cumulation of all trips and Categorises your individual tripsindividually also by color code to zoom into, adds natitical miles, airplane miles, train miles, car miles, etc, in your stats, it even has a blog built in if you wat to publish, has tips on your ports, even counts your contries, easy to use, easy to share, and free !!

I tried it, too. However, even when I indicate that I traveled between two points by boat, it draws a straight line. It has me getting from Naples to Kotor in a straight line across Italy and the Adriatic. Same for all cruise ports.

Do you happen to know what I can do to fix this? TiA.

zackiedawg

I don't do a 'per trip' map grid for photo collections either online or books - but I do like to keep a map of all of the locations I've traveled to in my life.  I keep an 'old fashioned' push-pin travel map board in the hall to my garage, covered in pins to all the cities or islands I've been to...it's more just for personal fun and tracking, and friends or family who come over and see it.

Yeah allot of my map lines also go through the country. I have not found a fix to this but overall I like the product, and on the overall map of the world it looks pretty decent, but I had to get allot of cruises on the map to achieve that.

Thanks

Thanks. I thought I was missing something. I appreciate knowing that (at least this time) it's not a problem with "the loose nut behind the wheel."

I just posted on their forum - hopefully I will get an answer from them !! Thanks !!

This is what I've got so far, with just our longer cruise trips from the past few years.

I prefer the rounded lines which don't cross over land and I always used the RCL itinerary maps, but it seems they have done away with those? Or are they just hidden and I missed them?

CRUISENSNOOZE

Hi, I use     www.polarsteps.com    easy to use...well I can do, so anyone can!!. I usually set up all the dates before I leave and then on holiday or after, I can add the photos and edit the text. Great to send links to friends and family who do not do Facebook.

If you want to see what it looks like...have a look at mine (am halfway through Cambodia and Vietnam now)

https://www.polarsteps.com/CHRNESBITT

Have fun and this is the time to do it, with us all on lock down!!   Chris

Just had a look at Polarsteps.

It's a bit strange, if you stay several days in one place and then continue to the next one, it counts the days your were in one place as travel time between the two places. Also, it automatically assumes you travel by plane. There should be a setting where you can define the transportation type.

On Radiance I found them on deck 6 near the Schooner Bar. . It was a large monitor with a slide show running. I took pix of all the maps. Here is one.

I now saw that my travel agent still has those maps I'm looking for.

I use them to create a trip itinerary I can hang on the door in my cabin.

Here is an example:

Sorry, just noticed that it was in Google Slides format, so I converted one into PDF, might be easier to look at.

It's written in german, but you'll get the picture... 🙂
