Dubai Online

Motiongate is the star attraction at Dubai Parks and Resorts . The Hollywood-inspired theme park opened at the end of 2016 and is underwritten by film studios DreamWorks, Columbia Pictures, and Lionsgate.

The park features around 30 rides and attractions spread around 5 unique zones.

Studio Central

Visitors enter the park though a huge movie reel gate and enter Studio Central. The first zone is styled like a 1950s New York street and offers shopping and dining options.

A central hub with an impressive fountain leads to the other 4 zones; DreamWorks, Lionsgate, Columbia Pictures, and Smurfs Village.

DreamWorks is a huge, climate-controlled, indoor area. It is best appreciated during summer daytimes when the temperature soars. It contains four areas based around the animated movies Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, and Madagascar.

Rides here boast impressive entrances and theming.

The Lionsgate area is home to the only rides in the world inspired by The Hunger Games. There’s also a Step Up stage show.

Columbia Pictures

The Columbia Pictures area boasts family-friendly rides based on films such as Hotel Transylvania, Underworld, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Ghostbusters.

This brightly coloured Smurfs-themed area has attractions catering to young children.

Riverland connects Motiongate to the other parks at Dubai Parks and Resorts; Bollywood Parks , LEGOLAND , and LEGOLAND Water Park .

• Camp Viking (DreamWorks) - Play area for children.
• Capitol Bullet Train (Lionsgate) – The Mack Rides launch coaster is main ride at the Lionsgate section of the park. Riders are transported from District 12 to the Capitol and breakneck speed. The half-pipe roller coaster features a zero gravity roll and 2 inversions. One of the must-do rides at Motiongate.
• Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - River Expedition (Columbia Pictures) – Rapid river ride.
• Dragon Gliders (DreamWorks) – Mack Rides inverted powered coaster. Dark ride themed around the film How to Train Your Dragon. Good mix of animatronics and projections. Suspended from the ceiling of DreamWorks.

Motiongate is open every day of the year.

Visit on a weekday to avoid queues. At the time of writing most visitors to the park are UAE/Dubai residents. Note that the weekend in Dubai is Friday and Saturday.

In the summer months the daytime temperature is high. Experience the indoor rides at DreamWorks to avoid the heat. Take in the rest of the park after sunset .

Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online. Multi-park tickets offer good savings.

QFast passes are an add-on that allow visitors to skip the lines on selected rides. They may be worth purchasing at weekends and public holidays .

Entrance to Motiongate is free for small children (aged 3 and under).

Annual passes are good value for UAE residents intending to visit regularly.

Motiongate is located in the Jebel Ali area of Dubai, close to the border with Abu Dhabi.

There is no Dubai Metro station nearby. The closest is UAE Exchange ; the western terminus of the Red Line . It is approximately 7 miles from the park. Visitors wishing to save a little money on taxi fares, could take a train to UAE Exchange and complete the journey by taxi .

Bus service DPR1 goes directly to Motiongate/Dubai Parks and Resorts. It departs from the Ibn Battuta Bus Station . The journey takes approximately 30 minutes.

There are over 10,000 free car parking spaces at Dubai Parks and Resorts. Paid valet parking is available.

Amazing visuals.

This is a fantastic 3D experience flying over the city of Panem. There is also several of the films actors included in the media for the Queue lines and inside the Aerial Tour as well! The visuals are great and its a wonderful fun ride!

Holovis’ 3D Panem Aerial Tour attraction opens at Lionsgate Zone, MOTIONGATE™ Dubai

Leading creator of immersive attractions, Holovis , is celebrating the opening of its Panem Aerial Tour at the brand new Lionsgate Zone at MOTIONGATE™ Dubai.

The Panem Aerial Tour is among the world’s first ever rides and attractions themed on the blockbuster movie franchise The Hunger Games .

The 3D hovercraft experience ‘flies’ guests over the districts en route to the Capitol. The experience is powered by a revolutionary new take on the immersive tunnel. Developed by experience designers, Holovis, it promises a deeper immersive experience, putting the rider ‘inside’ the narrative.

“Our new design takes the traditional immersive tunnel to a whole new level by enhancing multisensory experiences through unique and complex AV configuration,” observes Matt Dobbs , the company’s Middle East Business Development Manager.

Panem Aerial Tour puts guests at the heart of the story

“Guests will feel they are truly at the heart of the story as they fly over the different districts and try to escape the plot to capture them by the Capitol,” adds Dobbs.

The attraction features a dual set-up with two 30-seat motion systems. Two 6.2 metre x 24 metre screens curve on both axes to envelope the ride vehicle and audience sightlines. The company selected nine Digital Projection HighLite laser-based projectors to create the stunning 3D images. These are mounted on a bespoke-designed Holovis OptiRig system with a mechanical lift. The special rig makes for a straightforward installation and easy maintenance going forward despite the physically restricted space.

Holovis also developed PixControl , a proprietary auto alignment solution that automates alignment across the complex curved screen surface. This seamlessly integrates into the show control system to ensure operators can confirm pixel-perfect alignment every day without extensive software or hardware experience. Thus, every guest enjoys the perfect experience with optimum sightlines, regardless of seat position or height.

Audio immersion is created with a Holovis HiFiniti7:2 surround solution that delivers uncompressed spatial audio. Crossfades between multiple asynchronous audio tracks have also been programmed to give smooth transitions between scenes and triggers.

Multiple SFX systems and motion control technology, perfectly synchronised with the media, complete the leading-edge experience.

Motiongate Dubai Review (including best Motiongate Dubai Rides)

The UAE has become a bit of a hot spot for theme parks with Warner brothers world and Ferrari land in Abu Dhabi not to mention all the lands at Dubai Parks and Resorts. As we were in Dubai with a toddler we decided that the first park we should try on our tour of UAE theme parks on our Dubai Bucket List was the  Motiongate Dubai theme park. It promised a lot of entertainment with rides and lands based on family favorites Madagascar, Shrek and How to Train your Dragon – but did it live up to our high expectations?  Here’s our honest Motiongate Dubai Review.

Motiongate Dubai Review

Lands and theming at motiongate review.

As you enter motiongate you enter the equivalent to Disney’s Main Street but here it is called studio central. Themed on a Hollywood backlot. There are plenty of eateries and souvenir shops and some dance offs and parades take place here.

Like all great theme parks motiongate is split into different themed lands! To the left of studio central is the Lionsgate area. Only two films are represented here – step off – a theatre show and the biggest attraction rides being themed on Hunger Games. There is a bullet train ride and panem aerial tour. These rides are definitely for the adrenaline junkies.

Top tip : the bullet train ride has a notice outside that their seats are not for all body shapes – I didn’t try this but based on experience on other rides some of the cars are extremely tight.

The next land off Studio Central is Columbia pictures – home to rides based on Cloudy with a chance of meatballs, hotel Transylvania, Green hornet, zombie land, underworld and ghost busters.

Each of these films has its own small section but Hotel Transylvania ride is the centrepiece! This is a great area for those travelling with older children and adults but not so great for those with toddlers and small children. All rides in this section has a height limit and our over 90cm toddler could only ride the hotel Transylvania ride! This was a nice ride where cars criss crossed each other as you went through different rooms in the hotel.

Next to columbia pictures is smurf village! This is a good area for those travelling with younger children as you can ride the smurfs studio tour and also there are two jungle gym play areas to let your kids blow off steam. 

The final area and the place we spent most time was DreamWorks land – a completely covered area which is split into four distinct areas – Shrek, Madagascar, how to train your dragon and king fu panda! My little girl definitely had the most fun in this area but it isn’t just for littles as Madagascar has the fastest coaster in the park.

What is there at motiongate dubai with toddlers and young kids

DreamWorks is definitely the best area for small children but even the rides in this area have restrictions. There was nothing my little girl could ride in how to train your dragon, one ride (Shrek journey) in Shrek area – she loved this one so much however we went in it three times, two in Madagascar and there is only one ride – mr pings noodle cups in king fu panda that littles can ride.

Top tip : Melman go round – they make even adults wear the seatbelts on this carousel. I am an average sized lady and I was fine on Alex but on the tiger the seatbelt was digging into me. A man on the ride at the same time as me wasn’t allowed to ride as the seatbelt wouldn’t fit and I would say he was average in size not large. It seems silly everyone not just children have to wear seatbelt but they are the rules. If you are tall or an average man you may struggle with the belt in some horses.

Character meetings and shows at motiongate dubai

There are lots of character meetings and shows to keep people of all ages entertained. Be sure to take a picture of timings at the entrance. 

Our little girl loved learning king fu with po earning her kung fu academy headband. 

Kung Fu Panda – is motiongate worth it?

Unfortunately the Madagascar shows were not on when we were there but we did meet the penguins, captain du Bois and Julien!

Best Motiongate Dubai rides

Obviously the best Motiongate Dubai rides is quite a subjective thing but here are the top ten Motiongate Dubai Rides you shouldn’t miss

• Capitol Bullet Train (Lionsgate) – fast with a 360 degree rotation. 
• Madagascar Mad Pursuit (Dreamworks) – the fastest rollercoaster in the park 
• Swinging Viking (Dreamworks) 
• Zombieland Blast Off (Columbia)
• Shrek Merry Fairytale Journey – absolutely my daughters favourite ride which is a car ride round the Shrek story. 
• Green Hornet High-Speed Chase (Columbia)
• Dragon Gliders (Dreamworks)
• Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs River Expedition (Columbia)
• Mr Ping’s Noodle Fling – tea cup rides based off Kung Fu Panda (Dreamworks)
• ghost Buster’s Battle for New York (Not for young children as may frighten). 

The ride that we queued longest for and have to admit I was a bit disappointed with was the Hotel transylvania ride. It is a ride around the hotel but I found the theming wasn’t completed and nothing really happened on this ride.

Motiongate dubai location and how to get there

Motiongate is located at the Abu Dhabi side of Dubai! It takes about an hour to get to from central Abu Dhabi and 40 minutes from Dubai international airport. It is a great day trip from both Dubai and Abu Dhabi! There is ample parking but if busy you will have to take a shuttle from the car park to the parks! Alternatively you can buy tickets with private transfers!

Is motiongate Dubai air conditioned? Aka should you visit in summer?

The answer is partially! DreamWorks is all under cover being indoors however the other lands are not! However the queues tend to be under cover.

Overall I think motiongate is good to visit in either summer or winter.

Where to get Motiongate Dubai tickets and discounts

As with any theme park, I recommend buying your tickets online to avoid having to suffer the long entrance queues! If I am honest I have never been to Motiongate when it has been crowded. The queues we found t the entrance were the worst in the park and I wouldn’t say this was due to the volume of people but the speed and lack of cashiers.

Overall is motiongate worth it?

I would say that Motiongate is definitely worth a visit especially if you are travelling with older children or as a group of adults as there are plenty of rides to go on. If you are travelling to Motiongate Dubai with a toddler you will be restricted to one area – Dreamworks and there are limited rides you can use. We tend to spend half a day at Motiongate with toddlers and do all the rides at least once. If you are visiting in Summer then the Dreamworks is also covered and air condition making it one of the best indoor things to do in Dubai .

1) when you say take a picture of timings at the entrance for shows, where is this exactly??

2) are there any timings for meeting the characters at the parks like disneyland??

3) and lastly is there anything like photo pass or something where the professional photographers take photos with the characters and stuff..

The next section you can move to is the Hunger Games section. The World of The Hunger Games is located in the park’s Lionsgate zone. Attractions include a replica of the movie set and a video content featuring film characters. The highlight of this zone is the Capitol Bullet Train: A 360-degree ride with many loops. There is also an Aerial Tour with a hovercraft experience. It’s an immersive 4D Panem Aerial Tour, which will take you from District 12 to the Capitol on board a hovercraft to see the world of Panem. If you are up for a challenge, try The Green Hornet rollercoaster or the exciting Zombieland ride. Kids will also enjoy Flint’s Imagination Lab and the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs attraction.

• DreamWorks. This zone is designed for the young and the young-at-heart. It features multimedia shows, amazing rides, and interactive play zones based on Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, and other DreamWorks blockbusters. It is perfect for the entire family!
