What Happens If You Are Caught With Delta 8 ?

Whichever cruise line you are sailing with, the most likely consequence of being caught with Delta 8 is that it would be permanently confiscated, and you would be given a warning.

However, even though Delta 8 is less potent, it doesn’t mean the ramifications of being caught with it will be any less lenient than similar more potent substances.

Possessing and using cannabis, including Delta-8 and CBD, is forbidden, and those caught breaking the rules can be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including being banned from the ship. 

This policy extends to shore excursions as well. While some destinations may have relaxed laws regarding cannabis use, cruise lines are required to adhere to the laws of the countries they are visiting. This means that even if you are able to purchase and use cannabis legally in a port city, you will not be able to do so on a cruise ship or on a shore excursion. 

So if you are planning a cruise and are hoping to enjoy some weed, you’ll need to consider if you want to violate the ship’s policies and risk getting in trouble. There are other ways to enjoy your cruise, and you’ll be able to find plenty of other ways to have fun while on board.

Carnival Cruises

Carnival recognizes that some states in the U.S. have fully legalized the use of recreational and/or medical marijuana. However, cruise lines are required to follow U.S. federal law, which strictly prohibits possession and use of marijuana and other illegal, controlled substances. Since all cruise terminals in the U.S. are federal facilities, the terminals and our ships are drug-free zones. 

Royal Caribbean

Here is the official cannabis policy statement from Royal Caribbean .

In no event shall any Passenger bring on board the Vessel any illegal controlled substances (including medical marijuana). Marijuana possession and/or use, including medical marijuana, and possession or use of any illegal drugs, is strictly prohibited in many jurisdictions visited and on the Vessel at all times, as well as in terminals, during shore excursions, or any other part of the cruise, regardless of any local, state, or other laws which might permit use or possession of marijuana.

Norwegian Cruises

Here is the official cannabis policy statement from Norwegian Cruise Line .

No illegal drugs or other illegal substances including but not limited to medical marijuana are allowed onboard or may be utilized during a Norwegian Cruise Line holiday, including during transfers to and from ships, inside terminals, during shore excursions, or at our private island.

Aren’t CBD And Delta-8 Legal Though?

Yes and no. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized CBD in all 50 states in the United States. A later interpretation of this bill by the DEA establishes Delta-8 as federally legal, as it is made from CBD. Individual states have chosen to make delta-8 illegal.

The cruise lines can still outlaw both delta-8 and CBD on their ships if they like. A great example of this is alcohol . Most cruise ships prohibit bringing alcohol aboard even though it’s legal and they sell it on the ship. The fact is, they don’t want competition for their high-priced drinks. Similarly, they can ban bringing CBD and delta-8 on the ship.

Another thing to consider is that most cruises are traveling internationally. The laws around different cannabinoids are quite different in every country. CBD is still illegal in many countries, and if you get caught with it, you could face criminal prosecution.

How Much Do You Know About Delta-8?

Can You Smoke Weed In Port?

While cruise ships might ban you from bringing cannabis products onboard and using them on the ship, you must be able to use cannabis at the ports of call where it’s legal, right? 

Destinations like California, Alaska, and Jamaica have legal cannabis. Holland decriminalized cannabis decades ago. So can you smoke weed in Amsterdam coffee shops? Let’s explore.

These cruise lines follow U.S. federal law, which prohibits the possession and use of marijuana and other controlled substances, including Delta-8 THC.

Keep in mind that the laws may apply differently depending on your method of travel:

Travelling by Plane

If you're travelling by plane, you need to make sure that Delta-8-THC is legal in the state you'll take off from and the state you'll arrive in. You'll also need to check the regulations provided by your airline of choice. Travelling by Car

When travelling by car, you need to make sure that Delta-8-THC is legal in every state you will pass through.

Aside from ensuring that Delta-8-THC is generally legal in each state, you also need to check out the general hemp laws. That's because Delta-8-THC may be legal in certain areas where specific types of hemp products are not.

Delta-8-THC on Public Transportation

Public Transportation laws may be different than the general laws for the states you're travelling through or to. In the past, major public transportation companies like Greyhound and Amtrak have maintained a zero tolerance policy on "marijuana" products, even when travelling though legal states. Some companies, including small taxi companies, have restrictions against carrying alcohol and other substances on the ride.

Of course, many reference "federal laws" as their reasoning for not allowing cannabis products. It's fair to say that these restrictions may not apply to federally legal hemp products in states where they are also legal. For now, the overall atmosphere for Delta-8 on public transportation is unclear.

To date, no major transportation companies have made any public statements or amendments to their rules regarding hemp products. The best approach may be to reach out to these companies individually to understand the rules about carrying federally legal hemp products on board.

Delta-8-THC on Cruise Ships

Taking Delta-8-THC on a cruise ship is an even trickier feat. Most cruise ships don’t allow you to bring much in the way of mind-altering substances. Even alcoholic beverages, which are widely legal, are not typically allowed in your carry on bags.

In actuality, though, the rules on Delta-8 products are not so clear. Most cruise lines have spoken out against “marijuana products,” but have not made any announcements regarding hemp products since the 2018 Farm Bill separated hemp products from the legal definition used for “marijuana.”

For example, Carnival Cruise Line, amended their rules in November 2018 to suggest that passengers would be fined up to $500 for using cannabis on board. The rules state that a passenger could even be removed from the ship entirely, and would be responsible for the costs of transportation and other means to return home.

The policy states that “Carnival recognizes that some state and local governments in the U.S., and in the destinations we visit, might allow marijuana use. However, Carnival Cruise Line follows U.S. federal law, which strictly prohibits possession and use of recreational/medicinal marijuana and other illegal controlled substances.”

Because this statement seems to align Carnival Cruise Line with U.S. federal law, it’s reasonable to say that they may have a different outlook on hemp-derived products, but it’s no guarantee.

The same is true for other cruise lines, so it may be best to reach out to the company and ask about their Delta-8 policy before you make plans to travel with Delta-8. If you can’t get direct approval, you should probably just forgo Delta-8 for the trip.

Where to Store Delta-8-THC When Travelling

If you've determined that it's legal to take Delta 8 on your next trip, you may also be looking for tips on how to store it during your travels. Again, the best storage methods depend on your mode of travel, but the general rule of thumb is to keep Delta-8 in a sealed container and out of reach when you are operating a vehicle.

When travelling by car , you may reference the laws for driving with THC in states where cannabis is legal. It varies slightly from place to place, but the law generally requires drivers to leave THC products in their original, sealed containers and place them in the backseat or trunk.

When travelling by plane , the rules are a bit more complex. Some planes may allow you to bring hemp products on board in your carry-on luggage or personal bag, but they need to adhere to the requirements for other foods and liquids. Vape oil may be allowed on a plane in most cases, but batteries are prohibited by TSA.

If you choose a trustworthy distributor, this packaging has all the information necessary for law enforcement to identify the product as a legal hemp product if a situation arises.

Take what you need to get through your trip. There's no need to carry a bunch of excess products back home with you unless you purchase them while on vacation. Then, just leave them in their original containers and store them out of reach while driving a vehicle.

Make safe transportation arrangements during your trip.

If you're planning to take Delta-8-THC while you're out and about, make sure you arrange for another member in your party to drive or find a local ride-sharing service. Remember, travelling with Delta-8 is usually okay, but driving under the influence is still illegal and unsafe.

Tammy Barr, who says she worked on cruises for three years, reveals in a new Insider essay the six things she’d never do on board.

Barr’s nauti list includes shelling out for dining upgrades or a drink package; touching certain surfaces with bare hands; wearing a room key as a necklace; using improper maritime grammar; and risking not returning to the ship on time.

She doesn’t mean to be a keel-joy, but she stern-ly advises against “supplementary” dinner items.

“I know $12 may not seem like much for a steak or lobster tail at dinner, but the cost of the cruise is supposed to include your food,” Barr penned for Insider. “So, even though I enjoy lobster, I stick with the items without the upcharges.”

Data from late 2023 found that a five-night cruise in the Caribbean cost around $736 per person — a colossal 43% hike compared to the same time in 2019, as demand for cruise vacations spiked following the COVID-19 pandemic .

Barr keeps costs in mind while counseling against unlimited drink packages, especially for passengers who plan to leave ship bars to go ashore for the day.

And third, Barr suggests touching common surfaces such as elevator buttons with knuckles or elbows.

“This strategy has worked for me, as I have never contracted norovirus, even when it was running rampant on a ship I was on,” Barr shared. “It’s quite contagious and can linger on your fingertips even after using hand sanitizer. I’d definitely rather be safe than sorry.”

13 outbreaks of norovirus — an easily spread stomach bug — were reported on cruises in 2023, the most since 2012, when there were 16 confirmed outbreaks.

The first norovirus cruise outbreak of 2024 was logged in January, on a Celebrity Cruises ship.

Also to stay safe, Barr recommends not wearing your room key around your neck, as it looks “pretentious” and “like an invitation to be robbed.”

Speaking of con-sea-ted, Barr is particular about how she identifies ships.

“Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example, ‘Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess,’ or ‘I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam,'” she imparts to the Insider audience.

And finally, make sure to make it back to the ship on time, so you don’t wreck your vacation.

Just last month, Norwegian Cruise Line left eight passengers stranded on a tiny island in Africa after their private tour ran late.

Carnival cruise ship rescues nearly 30 people from adrift vessel

A Carnival Cruise Line ship rescued nearly 30 people who were stuck at sea on Sunday.

The crew on Carnival Paradise saved 28 Cuban nationals who were signaling for help on a vessel that was adrift around 2:30 p.m. The cruise ship was headed from Tampa, Florida, to Roatan in Honduras at the time.

“The bridge team onboard spotted the vessel and turned the ship around to rescue them,” Carnival said in a news release . “All were taken aboard, given food and were seen by the medical team.” The cruise line also notified the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West and officials in Roatan.

The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

The ship was set to visit Roatan on Monday. Carnival Paradise is on a five-day Caribbean cruise that departed from Tampa on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper .

The news comes after Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Apex ship rescued seven people in a small vessel adrift between Cuba and Mexico earlier this month. Another Carnival ship, Carnival Jubilee, also rescued two people stuck in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.

Monster growth! The cruise boom at Carnival continues with debut of another new ship

Make that five new ships for Carnival Cruise Line in just 18 months.

The world's second-biggest cruise brand on Thursday welcomed the first cruisers aboard yet another new vessel, the 4,126-passenger Carnival Firenze, in Long Beach, California.

The 135,156-ton ship is debuting just four months after Carnival unveiled the even bigger 5,374-passenger Carnival Jubilee and 11 months after the line began operating the 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia .

The latter two ships operate out of Galveston, Texas, and New York City, respectively. Carnival Venezia also spends part of the year sailing out of Port Canaveral, Florida.

Over the past 18 months, Carnival has also added the Miami-based, 5,374-passenger Carnival Celebration and the Australia-based, 2,260-passenger Carnival Luminosa . Carnival Luminosa also spends part of the year sailing out of Seattle.

The addition of the five ships to the Carnival fleet over such a short time span marks one of the fastest expansions of any cruise brand in the history of cruising.

With the addition of the five ships, Carnival now has 27 vessels in its fleet — tying a record it set before the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to cut back its capacity .

A new ship with an asterisk

Scheduled to sail year-round out of Long Beach, California, Carnival Firenze is a new ship for Carnival, but it's new with an asterisk. The 15-deck-high vessel has sailed before for another cruise line, Italy-based Costa Cruises.

Originally called Costa Firenze, the vessel sailed its maiden voyage for Costa, a sister brand to Carnival, in July 2021, making it nearly three years old.

Carnival Firenze is just one of several Costa vessels that Carnival Corporation, the parent company of Costa and Carnival, has transferred from Costa to Carnival in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic and its aftermath hurt the Costa brand much more than the Carnival brand. This was in part because the Costa brand had big operations in China, where cruising shut down during the pandemic for far longer than it did in North America.

Carnival operates most of its ships out of U.S. ports and draws a lot of the customers for these ships from the states near these ports — a segment of close-to-home cruising that has been booming since cruising resumed in 2021.

The result has been a stronger demand for Carnival ships than Costa ships.

Carnival Firenze's first sailing for Carnival, starting Thursday, will be a seven-night voyage to the Mexican Riviera that includes stops at Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.

Carnival cruising with an Italian twist

Like Carnival Venezia, which also is a former Costa ship, Carnival Firenze is something of an outlier in the Carnival fleet as the vessel retains much of its Italian theming from when it sailed for Costa.

The ship also still has its original, distinctive gold-and-blue funnel that is a trademark of Costa's vessels.

That said, Carnival Firenze won't be devoid of Carnival's signature shipboard venues. In recent months, the ship has undergone a significant overhaul in a dry dock in Spain that included the re-theming of many interior eateries and bars, as well as top-deck attractions to make them more consistent with the Carnival brand.

For instance, the ship will have a Carnival Waterworks water play area and a Steakhouse — a signature Carnival venue.

Other venues now on the ship that will be familiar to Carnival fans include a Guy Fieri-inspired Guy's Burger Joint, a Bonsai Sushi eatery, a Chef's Table, Lido Marketplace, Seafood Shack, a Pizzeria del Capitano pizza outlet and a Heroes Tribute Bar.

The ship also will have a new crew made up of Carnival staffers.

In short, Carnival Firenze will combine elements of both Costa and Carnival ships.

Carnival originally planned to call the ship a "Costa by Carnival" product to differentiate it from the rest of the Carnival fleet, but it eventually switched to marketing Carnival Firenze as a vessel that offers "Carnival Fun Italian Style."

Carnival Firenze, notably, was originally purpose-built to sail out of China with Chinese travelers but with Italian theming that played up Costa's Italian roots. Its theming is specifically tied to Florence, Italy — Firenze is what Italians call Florence.

The Carnival and Costa brands have long had similarities that make a transfer of ships between the two lines less complex than one might think. Ships for both Costa and Carnival often are built on the same platforms — that is, they share the same basic structural design and rough interior spaces. In such cases, the main difference between the ships of the two brands is the theming of specific spaces.

As of this week, fares for Carnival Firenze sailings start at $214 per person, not including taxes and fees, for a four-night sailing from Long Beach to Mexico.

Delta Air Lines, facing another union attempt to organize flight attendants, is raising their pay

Delta Air Lines, the most profitable U.S. carrier, is raising pay for nonunion employees as it gets ready for another attempt by a union to represent its flights attendants.

CEO Ed Bastian told Delta employees Monday that the airline will boost pay for flight attendants and ground workers by 5%, raise the minimum wage for U.S. workers to $19 per hour, and set aside money for merit raises.

Delta said the increases affect more than 80,000 employees.

“With this increase in base pay and starting rates, we continue our commitment to provide Delta people with industry-leading total compensation for industry-leading performance,” Bastian wrote in a memo to staff. He said the company has raised pay among major work groups by a cumulative 20% to 25% since 2022.

That figure includes base pay and profit-sharing. Delta gave employees $1.4 billion in profit-sharing for 2023.

Delta earned $4.6 billion last year — more than United, American, Southwest and Alaska airlines combined. It was Delta’s biggest profit since 2019, before the pandemic affected U.S. travel.

About 20% of the Atlanta-based airline’s workers are represented by unions — by far the lowest percentage among the nation’s four biggest airlines. Delta pilots are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, but cabin crews, maintenance workers and others are nonunion. Flight attendants narrowly voted against unionizing in 2010, and previous organizing campaigns failed in 2002 and 2008.

The Association of Flight Attendants is trying to change that . President Sara Nelson said her union hopes to gather enough authorization cards from Delta attendants by the end of the year to trigger another election.

“Delta has become the leader in generating profits, and that means Delta flight attendants should be leading on pay and benefits, and they are not,” she said.

Nelson believes that unions are in a stronger place now, even in the largely nonunion South, where the United Auto Workers won an election last week at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee. Nelson’s union is seeking an industry-leading contract at United Airlines, which could bolster its case at Delta.

An emergency slide falls off a Delta Air Lines plane, forcing pilots to return to JFK in New York

NEW YORK — An emergency slide fell off a Delta Air Lines jetliner shortly after takeoff Friday from New York, and pilots who felt a vibration in the plane circled back to land safely at JFK Airport.

Delta said that after takeoff the pilots got an alert about the emergency slide on the plane’s right side and heard an unusual sound coming from that area of the Boeing 767 jet, which is listed as having been manufactured in 1990.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the crew reported a vibration.

Pilots declared an emergency so the flight could be be routed quickly back to the airport, and the plane landed and taxied to a gate under its own power, according to the airline.

There were 176 passengers, two pilots and five flight attendants on board the flight, which was scheduled to fly to Los Angeles. Delta said it put passengers on another plane to California.

Delta said the plane was removed from service for evaluation and it was cooperating with investigators and supporting efforts to find the slide.

“As nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, Delta flight crews enacted their extensive training and followed procedures to return to JFK,” the airline said in a statement.
