Before Attempting to Meetup [ ]

It is recommended to do at least one Journey before trying to meet a specific person.

This guide will explain methods to connect with someone specific in general and gives tips on how to avoid connecting to other players.

For general information about how to connect or reconnect to Companions see here: To connect or to disconnect!

Common courtesy [ ]

Please keep in mind, Journey is all about respect and empathy .

One common complaint is about the same Companion repeatedly dusting on sight, and it makes people sad. See Quotes below.

There will be times when you are looking for a random Companion . Imagine having "everyone" dust on you, just because you are the wrong person.

Imagine 10 people trying to meet 10 others specifically at the first level where you can connect.

All those players, plus random players that just happen to be there could get connected. If all those unwanted connections are aborted, it means that maybe around 50 people are abandoned, just in that time frame.

Most important hint, to avoid random players:

  • Do not wait for your partner in a level.
  • If entering the wrong level, pause the game and go to chapter select and then re-attempt by entering the correct level. (This method resets your scarf length to minimum length.)
  • Quiting the game and restarting will show the "continue" option, which brings you to the start of the last saved level for re-entry. Levels are saved when you enter them from a previous level unless you've entered through a chapter select portal.
  • Go offline , If you want to play a bit while waiting for your partner to be ready or simply stay in the first level.

Basics for meetings [ ]

Journey does not have a traditional "play with friend option".

The intention of the game is to connect to someone you do not know and to travel together. To get attached to that person, can be unique experience.

Although the game is designed for random encounters with an unknown friend, there are tricks to travel with a certain person . Pick a friend, someone from the in game meetings channel on the discord or a person you played before with.

The process follows some simple rules, but there is no 100 % way to avoid meeting another (unknown) person and depending on platform, it might take some attempts.

It is recommended to read the tips in this section, but if you just quickly want to meet a friend in the Broken Bridge level , see: Connecting in Broken Bridge

General Information [ ]

To meet a first run on any other platform, you must wear a Red Robe. It can be a nice experience to go back to when you started to Journey.

Things to consider:

  • It is possible to connect in any level, but not in the first or last one (Chapter Select, Paradise).
  • To avoid meeting other players , enter a level or go online at the very same second. Time it via a chat.
  • If it takes you minutes to verify if you met, the other person might get attached and happy to meet you - just to see you dust later.
  • Examples: several bigger and smaller chirps, standing at a certain place etc.

These are the only supported cross platform connections below:

  • PlayStation Plus Premium players can connect to PlayStation 3 players, via cloud gaming [1]
  • PlayStation 5 players connect to PS4 players

Note: Epic Games and Steam do not connect with each other.

This video covers the basics about disconnection triggers in each level:

Two players will connect if [ ]

  • But not too far, such as at two different ends of the level.
  • Standing at the exact same point as the Companion makes connecting harder, but not impossible
  • Activating the normal Glyphs , picking up Symbols , calling the Flyers or activating the smaller Banners in Broken Bridge does not affect connection.

For platform specifics, see: Specifics for PS3, PS4, PC Versions

Further hints are also below at the "Connecting in Broken Bridge Section" .

Examples for triggers :

  • Both players need to have the same bridge parts up or none activated.
  • There are many triggers in the Underground level, the machines will be on different places for each player, thus, they will not connect.
  • Even at the end of the level, it is extremely rare that a connection was reported.
  • For more details about connection in each level see: To connect or to disconnect!, Specifics per level .

Get your save-files [ ]

Having save files ready when going on an arranged journey is very useful. It makes you able to start at any level, but with a long scarf. See: Hints for the Regularly Travelling Wayfarer - How to Backup and Restore a Certain Level with Certain Robe and Same Symbol

If you just use the Chapter Select buildings, you will have the "CS scarf"/short scarf.

Epic Games version seem to have problems with connecting people, this was recognised around summer 2021 (please contact the community on the discord, for tests and maybe solutions will be found).

We do not connect  :( [ ]

If despite several tries, no connection happens:

Quit the game, to avoid other players. Then check if:

  • Both were able to meet randoms/other people in other Journeys?
  • Both are connected to the internet / game-platform ; use a cable for stronger connection.
  • Going on and offline to time the connection, can lead to the problem that one forgot to go online again.
  • Sometimes you do not see a shine; Companion might be sitting behind a hill or is just far away.
  • Change download region in Steam-options to the same of the Companion. [3]
  • If both are using the same internet network (in the same household) it might not work. [4]
  • PS4 specifics .

Normally, the connection is established within some seconds.

If you did not connect:

  • Quit game (quit to title on PC versions does not disconnect you for some time from the wrong Companion that you might have met before)
  • Start the game
  • Both press continue, at the same time to reenter the level

If trying to connect in Bridge level : do not use the Chapter Select option, you need to watch the vision, to get to the second level.

Connecting in Broken Bridge [ ]

Most players naturally try to meet in Broken Bridge , to have a full Journey together. Just keep in mind, that everyone trying to meet a random player might get into your way.

Drawback on trying to connect in BB:

  • Many people try to meet there or just start their Journey there.
  • Depending on amount of players playing at that moment, the chances to connect to someone else are probably higher then in other levels.

Theoretically and in most cases you just need to do the following:

  • Both players are ready and connected to the network.
  • Both enter the Broken Bridge level at the exact same time, to avoid meeting others.
  • As long as you stay at the ledge at the start of the level, connecting is not activated . A connection up there may happen, if you jumped around and hit the trigger ...
  • Both go to a certain area in the level and walk a bit around.
  • Either agree on activating certain Bridge Banners (both need to activate them) or do not activate any bridge Banners.
  • You should connect. Use the sign you agreed on, to quickly recognise if its you.
  • Connected to someone else? --> Oh, its not you
  • It's not working. --> We do not connect :(

Step by step text [ ]

The list below can be used to copy and paste it to your trying-to-connect-with-companion. Send them the text to read beforehand.

"Raving's favorite" for Broken Bridge [ ]

We will try to go to the Broken Bridge level AT SAME TIME. Then chances are high that we connect.

  • Start the game and do the quickstart-trick (use menu option "Chaper Select" right at the start of the Journey) to save time
  • Go through the first level, pick the Symbols and watch the vision. Then wait at the stairs to the corridor to the next level.
  • Do not already go to BB :) Wait for me to be ready too.
  • Both say ready and then one says go.
  • Both walk through the corridor to BB (or press continue, if the game was quit, when you were in BB).
  • Do not activate the big bridge-building-banners or tell me if you did. Having those different means we will not connect.
  • After entering the level, we should promptly head left to the first symbol there, you can pick it. Then walk a bit around and hope for connection.
  • How will we recognise each other? How about ______ (enter your sign, like 2 small chirps, 1 big here. "I will chirp heavily will not work, many people just do that ;)) .

Is that you? [ ]

Agree on a certain, rather quick sign or place to stand upon meeting to identify if you connected with your friend. (or a game screenshot)

If it's not your friend, it could be considered "polite" to rather quickly dust on them, to avoid giving them the feeling you are up for a game (see also Common courtesy ).

Oh, its not you :( [ ]

If you run into another player while trying to connect with your friend:

  • Quit the game. Your partner should do the same, to not get connected with the person that you just left.
  • You could quickly activate a bridge banner, then quit the game. When you re-enter, their game will be in another state, thus you do not connect to them again. Could be seen as rude... they may had a plan and you messed it up for them ;)
  • Give the other player time to leave the level / them activating triggers, before you retry
  • Try to connect in the next level, to avoid frustration on both sides
  • Read the " hints for every level "

To see if you are running into the same person again, check their Symbol. If it is the same as last time, it is the same person (however, coincidences can happen so this method is not guaranteed).

Specifics for PS3, PS4 and PC versions [ ]

Pc version specifics [ ].

The connection is also depending on the platform. There can be a server issue, maintenance etc.

Epic Games: Epic Games version FAQ . Sadly arranging a meetup does not work anymore on Epic Games, or meeting Companions in general.

  • Note that while Steam does not have a region block, it does have a number of systems by which it determines which players it will prefer to connect you to.
  • Steam will always prefer to connect you to someone/a lobby that is closer to you, geographically. Even if the ping time is higher than an another lobby that it considers to be further away.
  • This can make it especially difficult to connect with a Companion if they live very far away from you.

Solution for playing across the globe:

  • Change the download-server in steam options to the same as your partner or something in the middle, video here .
  • It is based on where your public IP is considered to be, meaning you can "cheat" the system by using a vpn to change where Steam thinks you are.
  • Note: Chapter Selecting to refresh is not tested on PC yet, exiting to title screen will not refresh the "lobby". Needs to be re-evaluated since the new patch could have changed that too, also refreshing is not really needed anymore.
  • At launch the Epic Games Store's version supported LAN play natively, but may no longer.
  • In a case where Steam version no longer supports LAN, a Steam emulator that supports tricking games into believing LAN networks are normal online connections can be used.

PS4 specifics [ ]

The best method found when trying to connect to someone is to turn off/on the network :

  • The description at the YouTube video covers additional information.
  • Turn off the network
  • Wait 30 seconds, quickly turn it back on
  • Wait another 30 seconds
  • If no connection: turn off, and repeat until a connection. [5]
  • If one goes offline, while the other goes online, it will not work.

PS3 specifics [ ]

PS3 is know to have the most reliable connection process and depending on the internet connection itself, also stable. Reconnecting works very well.

"The original PS3 version has perfect connecting. If a Companion is near you with a matching level, it will get the two of you together. If it doesn't, you can either unplug your lan cable from the router or sign out of psn. If you press triangle on account management you can sign out and sign in quickly." [6]

10 years later, there’s still nothing like Journey’s multiplayer

Journey turns 10 today.

By Jay Peters , a news editor who writes about technology, video games, and virtual worlds. He’s submitted several accepted emoji proposals to the Unicode Consortium.

The game’s multiplayer still has an effect on me.

I’ll never forget the first time I played Journey .

Throughout the game, real-life players can join you on your quest toward a mountain on the horizon. Players can fade in and out of your adventure — maybe they want to go faster than you, maybe they just quit — but in the latter half of my game, I had found somebody who stuck with me. Journey has no voice or text chat and no names identifying other players you meet. The only way we could communicate was through our movements, sticking close together to refill each other’s energy, and singsong chirps. Despite those limitations, we built a rapport.

Near the end of Journey , you have to scale the mountain, and as you approach the peak, you get caught in a storm. Much of the game is filled with sunlight, flight, and joyful music, but the mountain is gray, winds buffet your character, and the music is, at times, uncomfortable. Even though the level was draining, I was happy that I had my companion, and we huddled together as we marched toward the peak.

Eventually, the music fades out, and you can only hear your footsteps trudging ever more slowly through the elements. Then, as the game grew silent, my friend collapsed into the snow. I actually cried out in dismay. Then my character fell over, too, and the screen faded to white.

In many video games, you die a lot. That was the only time a virtual death has made me feel like I had actually lost a friend.

Fortunately, that’s not actually the end. In a cutscene, I was revived soon after I fell, and then, in an exuberant celebration of color and music that’s perhaps my favorite video game “level” of all time, soared toward the top of the mountain — with my once-fallen friend flying alongside me.

Journey turns 10 years old today, March 13th, and I still haven’t experienced anything like that moment. To mark the anniversary and learn more about the game’s bond-forging multiplayer, I spoke with Jenova Chen, president and creative director of Journey developer thatgamecompany. While it may feel like the game is effortlessly pairing you with companions as you go along, based on what he told me, it wasn’t quite that simple.

The goal for Journey was to “innovate how it feels between people on the internet,” Chen said. “Can we invent the right environment, the right feedback, to bring out something that we’re more proud of? And to have an online game where people feel friendly and compassionate towards each other?” He elaborated further later in our conversation. “We want to see two people going through the journey together, [like when] in our life, we meet someone special, and we travel with them, and eventually, we might depart from each other.”

“Human beings, unfortunately, are giant babies”

While it was a profound ideal, “the reality is: human beings, unfortunately, are giant babies in the virtual world,” Chen said. “No matter how old you are, even if you’re in your 70s, if we move you from Earth and into a virtual space, [that person] would become a giant baby. A baby doesn’t know what is a good moral value versus what is a bad moral value. The baby only knows: if I’m in a new environment, I’m going to try to push the buttons and see what kind of feedback I can get, and babies are great at looking for maximum feedback.”

To encourage compassion, the team tested a lot of ideas. They tried a system inspired by Gears of War that let you help out an incapacitated friend but found that even in playtests among the developers, the player would rather not help the other person out. “That way, they create a lot of anxiety in the other player and make the other player more angry. And they actually get more gratification out of the feedback,” Chen said.

They also tested a mechanic where one person could push the other high up, and then that person would pull the first. “But once we gave this physics simulation to the players, they chose to push each other off the wall and see them fall from the cliff and die, waiting to be helped,” Chen said.

During those tests, people would say, “I would rather play this game alone. Why do you force me to play with this other person? I hate them,” according to Chen. That’s because “killing is much bigger feedback than just helping the other person to get on a ledge,” Chen said.

“At the time, I was like, ‘Is humanity at its core just dark?’”

The challenges of making those mechanics work affected Chen. “At the time, I was like, ‘Is humanity at its core just dark?’” he said. But a child psychologist helped Chen see things in terms of the way babies view feedback. “If you don’t want babies to do something terrible, give them zero feedback,” he recalled learning from her. “Don’t give them negative feedback because they will misinterpret that as positive feedback.”

That led to a change that would have a huge effect on the game: when you got close to someone, you’d recharge their energy. (In the final game, you use your energy to fly.) “And so that makes people feel like ‘Oh, I love to stay near someone because I don’t have to run to find the energy,’” he said. “So they end up sticking together, and they travel together, and they form a companionship. That was just one simple change. From assholes who want to kill each other and dancing around their corpse, creating hatred, to ‘hey, they’re all lovey-dovey, they’re helping each other, and they couldn’t leave each other.’”

A friend and I hanging out on our quest.

The team also had to experiment to land on the musical chirps that players can use to communicate with each other. They tried a “thumbs up and thumbs down idea” where you could push the thumbstick up to show a green ping and push it down to show a red ping. But in testing, the majority of pings were red as players spammed them to bug their partner to do what they wanted, which created feelings of stress.

“Eventually, we realized it’s better just to keep it neutral,” Chen said. “And then we let the frequency and the amplitude [of the ping] be interpreted by the other player. But we noticed that when we don’t add context, people usually interpret the other person’s intention positively. I think that’s deep down our human nature.”

The chirp is like a musical instrument

Even though the chirp is intended to be neutral, it’s not a static noise. It’s almost like a musical instrument, and its sound evolves throughout the game, Journey composer Austin Wintory told me. “At the very beginning of the game, it’s very bird-like, and there’s flute and little bits of cello,” he said. But over the course of the game, you’ll hear more of a human voice within that sound. “So by the time you’re in the clouds and the very big finale, especially if you do one of the big charged up [pings], you can really hear there’s a human voice in there.” (The human voice used in the pings is Lisbeth Scott, who sings Journey’s end credits.)

The humanity in the design of Journey , from the human voice in the chirps to the multiplayer design that encourages cooperation, is so much of what makes the game memorable for me. As I climbed the mountain with my companion the first time I played the game, I realize now that while I may have been huddled close to my friend to try and share my energy, deep down, I just wanted to do everything I could to help them get up that mountain — and I knew they were doing the same for me.

Ahead of talking to Chen and Wintory, I replayed Journey for the first time since it came out. Despite how much I love the game, I’ve always worried another run would change how I feel about it. I was so fearful of how it might contort my memories that I was actively procrastinating on playing it.

To my surprise, the experience was just as powerful. Ten years on, there are still people playing Journey , and I met four other companions who were part of my adventure. I even made a new friend who stuck by my side through the snowy climb to the mountain’s summit — and through the joyful flight to the peak.

My companion and I walking together at the very end of the game.

Journey is available on PS3, PS4, PS5, PC, and iOS. Composer Austin Wintory has also just released a re-orchestration of the Journey soundtrack performed by the London Symphony Orchestra titled “Traveler — A Journey Symphony.” I’ve listened to it and thought it was very good.

Journey Co-Op Review - Page 2

Even if you find yourself abandoned...

Journey  offers an intimate form of storytelling through beautiful imagery and a perfect score.  I encourage you to take your time and enjoy the ride.  Some of the most thrilling moments are over too quickly, even when playing at a leisurely pace.  This only encouraged me to play the game again.  After my second time through I casually began a third game.  I had to drag myself away from my PS3 at three in the morning.  There is a beautifully integrated chapter select option for when you want to show someone something specifically amazing.

...a new player will come for you.

I offer a word of caution for budget gamers:   Journey  is a short game, especially for $15 dollars.  The whole game can be completed  in about two hours.  My second  playthrough  took me an hour and a half.  I wanted to rush through the title, just to see how fast it could be completed, but I was paired with a truly stellar co-op partner.  I was obliged to explore more of the world than I had anticipated, and I was happier for it.  A speed run should take less than an hour, but if speed is your goal, you're simply doing it wrong.  I plan to really stop and smell the roses in my third playthrough.

Editor's Note:  I believe players will get the most from Journey by going into the game with a completely fresh perspective. I didn't want to spoil anything .  If you have a question about any of the more technical aspects of the game feel free to ask in the comments section or PM me.  I will do my best to answer them.

Journey is exclusively available on the PlayStation Network.

It Takes Two

Anyone looking for a fun and engrossing cooperative experience needs to put It Takes Two at the top of their list. This release, from the same studio that created A Way Out , is a masterpiece of cooperative gaming. Not only is the story engrossing, but the art style is also fantastic, and the gameplay is addictive . Players will have to support one another on their journey through It Takes Two 's action-and-puzzle-filled chapters.

16 Games Perfect For Long-Distance Couples

No matter which character they pick, players will constantly switch back and forth between a leadership and support role, spending time in the limelight before helping to accentuate and elevate their partner. It's a beautifully balanced release that shows how incredible a good cooperative multiplayer experience can be.

Crab Champions

Crab Champions is a third-person shooter featuring crabs. This description might make it sound like a joke game, but that would be a disservice to the quality on display here. In early access, Noisestorm has been updating the base game at a fairly consistent rate, releasing patches that either add new content or improve things like balancing. Consequently, Crab Champions will continue to improve over the following months and possibly years, which is exciting since the current version is already great.

Crab Champions absolutely nails its movement; in fact, an argument could be made that it is one of the most smooth and fluid third-person shooters on the market. While the gameplay loop gets repetitive after a while, the core mechanics are so enjoyable that they can carry the load. The game is a blast as a solo experience, and it is only enhanced when a few friends are brought along for the ride.

Steam User Rating: 97%

Although many would consider Minecraft as the defacto building, crafting, and survival game, there are some who would argue that Terraria is just as, if not more, engaging. This release ditches the 3D blocky aesthetic in favor of a pixelated, 2D side-scrolling adventure. Like Minecraft , Terraria 's worlds are procedurally generated, so no two playthroughs will ever feel the same. Those craving something a bit more difficult than a traditional Minecraft session can turn to Terraria for a much more in-depth combat system, as well as an array of difficult bosses that will have the player fighting, grinding, and exploring for better gear.

Terraria can be a blast alone , but it's even better with friends. Players are free to tackle the entirety of Terraria as a coop pair or even in a group.

Left 4 Dead 2

Although Turtle Rock Studios recently released Back 4 Blood , a game influenced by its original Left 4 Dead release, there are still many players flocking to Left 4 Dead 2 to get their zombie-fighting fix. This is because Left 4 Dead 2 has been a phenomenal part of the cooperative scene ever since it hit store shelves back in 2009. It's a bit of an upgrade from the original release while still maintaining all the core gameplay elements that made it such a fantastic experience. The end result is a sequel that is engaging, fast-paced, hectic, and immensely fun.

Left 4 Dead 2 can be experienced alone with AI partners, but it's much more fun via cooperative play. With so much mod support and even custom campaigns, players who are just hopping into Left 4 Dead 2 will find tons of content to explore with their friends.

  • 10-Player Online Co-Op

Another difficult-yet-rewarding release, Valheim is an Indie smash-hit that has players taking over the role of a Viking. To survive, new adventurers will need to construct shelter, craft weapons, and collect materials to fasten armor and other tools. Similar to The Forest and its sequel, players will find themselves weak and helpless at the start, as they're forced to avoid or tangle with some pretty difficult enemies.

Valheim is a bit more " Dark Souls -like" in its combat approach, and players will need to learn enemy attack patterns and behaviors in order to defeat most of them. There are even some imposing bosses to take down. The best part is that players can bring a friend along, to make the journey a bit easier.

Don't Starve Together

Don't starve together.

  • 6-Player Online Co-Op

Don't Starve was another Indie release that took the gaming world by storm, quickly developing a cult following thanks to its punishing game world, seemingly unfair mechanics, and alluring storybook-like art style. Played from a top-down perspective, players will have to survive by foraging for food and other items while building shelters and avoiding an array of deadly monsters found in each procedurally generated playthrough.

Differences Between Don't Starve And Don't Starve Together

Don't Starve Together lets players experience all the struggles found in the original release with a group, helping one another to survive by picking from a series of interesting characters, each with their own abilities and stats.

Those who enjoy heisting their way through Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online will find a lot to love with Payday 2 . This release takes the heist concept and crafts an entire release around it, giving groups of players access to an array of missions, bank jobs, and other types of heists to complete. Players will need to keep a level head as they attempt to avoid guards, disable security cameras, take hostages, and perform other heist tasks while avoiding capture.

What makes Payday 2 so engaging is that players can complete missions in a variety of ways. Sometimes they'll need to attack things from a stealthy perspective, and sometimes they can run in guns blazing. There are also an array of character types and special abilities that players can unlock as they play.

Payday 3 launched on September 21, 2023.

Killing Floor 2

Tripwire's Killing Floor 2 has had a longer-than-most shelf life. While not quite as popular as Valve's own zombie co-op shooter , the game has maintained a decent playerbase on Steam, and it is frequently on sale for dirt cheap. Technically, Killing Floor 2 can be played solo, but it is not recommended nor particularly enjoyable; as such, this is one title that should be played alongside a few other people. Wave-based levels are not unusual for the genre, but it is a tried and tested structure and formula that can provide accessible and constant thrills when executed well. Killing Floor 2 proves as much, and the game has more to offer than just an enjoyable loop.

The title's classes are arguably the game's highlight, as the Perks all bring something fresh to the plate. Testing different team configurations adds a great deal of replayability, and each class can be leveled up to expand its abilities. Killing Floor 2 implements these light RPG elements well, and their inclusion elevates what could have otherwise been a fun but forgettable shooter.

Sea Of Thieves

Sea of thieves.

When it set sail in 2018, Rare's high-seas project hit immediate rough waters; however, the game managed to weather that storm to come out on the other side. Now, more than 5 years later, Sea of Thieves is firmly established as a cornerstone of the online scene that can satisfy both co-op and PvP fans, along with the occasional lone pirate. While not devoid of direction, Rare designed the game to encourage players to seek out their own adventures, which is generally easier to do when part of a crew.

Even if it is not narratively dense, Sea of Thieves is still stuffed with content and objectives. There are missions, tall tales, factions, treasure hunts, and timed events to keep players engaged; more importantly, a crew can simply spend their days exploring the sandbox and embracing whatever comes their way, be it a Kraken or another pirate ship.

  • 16-Player Online Co-Op

Barotrauma drops players in a submarine that is exploring the depths of an alien ocean, one crawling with entities far scarier than a Great White Shark. Along with a campaign catering to solo players, Barotrauma has two modes designed specifically with co-op in mind, and they arguably showcase the game at its peak.

Barotrauma: Best Weapons, Ranked

In the latter options, Barotrauma players take charge of individual roles in the submarine , each of which has a crucial part to play in a mission's success and the crew's general survival. Even when surrounded by friends, the game manages to still be excruciatingly stressful, in the best possible way.

After creating something special with 2013's Risk of Rain , Hopoo Games repeated the feat with its sequel. A third-person shooter, Risk of Rain 2 is more ambitious and bigger than its predecessor, but they are undoubtedly cut from the same cloth. After picking a class, players are dropped in fairly open levels where they must work their way toward an escape point, a process that involves blasting armies of enemies and collecting all sorts of loot. The latter is Risk of Rain 2 's main focus, as the game loves to deck players out in all sorts of empowering gear that will make them feel like they could take on the world without breaking a sweat (although, they will eventually break out in hives as they meet enemies beyond their capabilities).

As a single-player experience, Risk of Rain 2 is an absolute blast and well worth a recommendation. As a co-op roguelike, the game ranks among the best on Steam. Risk of Rain 2 's class system adds an element of strategy to multiplayer since players are incentivized to work as a unit rather than four individuals who just happen to be in proximity of each other. It should be noted that players need to unlock the different classes, but that process is entertaining in its own right.

Lethal Company

Every month, Steam seems to produce a couple of early access games that take the world by storm, and Lethal Company won this lottery in October 2023. Supporting four-player co-op, the first-person horror game revolves around visiting moons that happen to have a few wayward creatures running around. The goal is to explore the area, collect loot to satisfy the company's quota, and make it out alive. Basically, the concept is very similar to an extraction shooter, albeit without the shooter part.

Even though solo runs are possible, Lethal Company really emphasizes teamwork , to the point that someone can stay on the ship to monitor the moon and guide the rest of the group to safety. While still a work in progress, Lethal Company already executes its premise well, and the progressively growing quota provides replay value. The game can also be genuinely intense and terrifying.

Pairs of players looking for a great puzzle game should put Portal 2 at the top of their list. Although this release has a great single-player campaign, it also features a robust cooperative storyline that stands as its own adventure. Players will control one of two bots and be subject to a variety of GLaDOS' seemingly sinister portal-based tests. This is a fantastic puzzle game and a great use of Portal's unique gameplay mechanics. The cooperative play is well-thought-out and will force players to work together to escape each room.

Portal 2 is a game that all players should check out at least once and the cooperative experience makes it even better.

Deep Rock Galactic

Deep Rock Galactic puts players in the shoes of a resource collection team as they're sent off on an array of missions to collect minerals and other valuable items. In this futuristic and campy first-person shooter, players will need to band together as one of four different classes in order to ensure that each mission goes off without a hitch, checking certain tasks off their to-do list like collecting a specific amount of resources, defending a specific area, or subduing certain threats.

Deep Rock Galactic is a great FPS , offering a challenge at higher levels while simultaneously promoting a fun and funny environment.

Now Playing: Journey Video Review

Anyone who buys Journey on Steam within its first two weeks on the platform will also receive a free copy of Flower , created by the same studio, Thatgamecompany. Flower normally sells for $7 on its own, so it's a pretty sweet deal to get Journey on sale and snag Flower for free while you're at it. The game was well-received, earning an 8/10 in our Flower review .

In Journey, you control a nameless robed figure as they traverse a vast, empty desert, moving toward a large mountain looming in the distance. Journey was notable for its silent "multiplayer" interactions--along the way, you'll encounter other players, whom you can travel alongside and assist, but you can't communicate with them and won't see their names until after the credits. The game earned a "superb" 9/10 in GameSpot's Journey review for its beautiful environments, dynamic music, and evocative multiplayer interactions.

"It's a real accomplishment that Journey draws together so many conventional game elements, and so well, and still feels like the art piece we expect from the makers of Flow and Flower: intriguing, ambiguous, and experimental," wrote Jane Douglas. "The game's length, two or three hours on the outside, is exactly right, letting you take in the whole experience in one session. Once you've completed it, you can dip back into favourite chapters, and even without the impact of unexpected reveals, it's uncommonly enthralling. Its deliberate ambiguity brings on the urge to speculate on deeper meanings, but meaning here is bound to be personal, and best discovered for yourself. Discover it you should."

Can you play with a friend or only anonymous?

Playstation 3 ios (iphone/ipad) pc playstation 4, journey (playstation 3).

  • Can you chose a friend to play with? I play all of my online games with friends when I can. i will get this game if i can chose a friend to play with. megantereon - 12 years ago - report

Top Voted Answer

  • You get synced up with partners based on the state of the environment, so if you put the environment in an odd state, you'll be less likely to get randoms and your friend can do the same to get partnered with you. For example, on the bridge level (first place you can meet others) you can put the bridge together except for one section you'll be less likely to have random people wandering in. It's probably easiest to set up on the following chapter, as less people are likely to skip the first cloth creature and do others. najzere - 12 years ago - report 16   5
  • Early in the game you will begin meeting anonymous companions. my friend and i were able to force a meeting by entering the area simultaneously and walking around the area to the left. we were on the phone timing it up and had to do it about five times before it worked. CStrife7 - 12 years ago - report 15   13
  • There is no way to tell who you're playing with. That's what makes Journey's multiplayer so unique. You meet a stranger, you travel with them. There's no invite system at all. Anonymous travels only, however I urge you not to just dismiss the game purely on that fact. It's a game well worth experiencing. You don't HAVE to play multiplayer either. If you're signed out, no-one can join. You can Journey alone if you wish. Of course, it's entirely up to you. ShadowGandalf - 12 years ago - report 10   9
  • This game is truely unique and full of greatness!!! I'm on my 20th playthrough, I must say this is one game that never gets old or boring to play!!! But, there might be a way to beat that anonymouse option, I think if you jot down the names of the companions you met along the way and add them as a friend, maybe you would be able to let them know when your getting on Journey and just maybe if they enter at the same time, it's quite possible you'll know who your playing with..... Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

!{Model.Description}

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company.

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The blemishes of beloved video games are sometimes referred to as their “jank.” The term encapsulates things in a game that may be slightly broken or inherently peculiar — aspects that should be detrimental to the experience, but aren’t. Ideally, these broken bits are overshadowed by a game’s superior elements, be they intricate combat systems, rich stories, or unique worlds.

To call what makes Dragon’s Dogma 2 special “jank” is unfair to Capcom’s new role-playing game. But Dragon’s Dogma game director Hideaki Itsuno certainly flirts with jank in the latest incarnation of his medieval fantasy series, all in pursuit of vision . Central to that vision, Itsuno says , is “to be in a place where your destination is within sight and not too far away, yet you feel excited about the path there.”

When we award the Polygon Recommends badge, it’s because we believe the recipient is uniquely thought-provoking, entertaining, inventive, or fun — and worth fitting into your schedule. If you want curated lists of our favorite media, check out What to Play and What to Watch .

The path in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is its biggest draw. Travel is done almost exclusively on foot, with fast-travel options being extremely limited and slow-travel options (in an ox-driven cart) slightly less limited. What may seem like an annoyance in a modern open-world game, where convenience of travel has become the norm, eventually becomes pleasing, the way real-world hikes can be. The game world is packed with sights to see, hidden caves to explore, and hundreds of monster encounters. Curiosity has driven me to explore the game’s forests and deserts, finding new treasure and new threats, all at a light jogging pace.

The game’s sense of adventure goes beyond the geographical. It’s also a journey of reckoning with the game’s esoteric and opaque mechanics, some of which seem designed to test players’ resolve. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is not particularly difficult in the way action-RPGs like Dark Souls and Nioh are, but it is challenging in that it requires me to meet it on its terms. Figuring out its quirks makes it special; reevaluating how an open-world game can play leads to discovering its joy.

An adventuring party looks across fields at the town of Vernwerth in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Moving through this fantasy world and uncovering its huge map, discovering hidden secrets along the way, is a big part of what makes Dragon’s Dogma 2 so intoxicating over dozens of hours. The unremarkable fantasy world of Vermund is full of threats large and small, from packs of wolves and malicious goblins to giant griffins and ogres that can be climbed in hard-fought battles. As promised by its title, there are dragons to fight too, though these battles are rare and special.

Combat drives the game ; there is a variety of battle styles to learn, from the straightforward warrior, who wields sword and shield, to more complicated vocations like magick archer, a bow-wielding spellcaster, and the trickster. Adding to the uniqueness of Dragon’s Dogma 2 ’s combat system are pawns, computer-controlled characters who will aid you in battle. Pawns are hired from other players in a sort of passive multiplayer component of the game. You may encounter and hire one on one of the many long walks you take in Dragon’s Dogma 2 , or you can enter a sort of interdimensional portal called the Rift and select one, as if you were the hiring manager at your job. Your merry little band of pawn followers have their own fighting styles and their own personalities; some are aggressively violent or driven to ransacking treasure, while others are kind and helpful, constantly coming to your aid with curatives.

Pawns add an asynchronous multiplayer element to the game that goes beyond just swapping hired hands back and forth. Through pawns, you’ll learn how other players play, what discoveries they’ve made in their worlds, and even how others treat the pawns they hire. Over the course of your adventure, your main pawn will likely be hired by someone else, and they’ll return to you with rewards for their service. Upon their return, pawns will provide you with Yelp-like reviews of the players who hired them. These are ultimately light touches in the overall experience of Dragon’s Dogma 2 , but they’re another fascinating layer in the unique construction of the game.

An Arisen and Pawns settle in around a campfire and tent at nighttime in a screenshot from Dragon’s Dogma 2

You’ll even get a sense of other players’ tastes by way of how they’ve customized their own pawns. A lot of them are minimally dressed and showing lots of skin, so be warned if you have delicate sensibilities. But also expect a few giggles as you look at other players’ pawns; they like to recreate celebrities — I hired “Taylor Swift” as a pawn once — and famous fictional characters. Opting into online play is a choice, though. You can forgo that option if you want, hiring only officially made pawns created by developer Capcom.

Pawns also occasionally display a bit of jank. They’ll follow you wherever you go, sometimes off the side of a cliff face, hilariously falling to their death. They’ll get caught up in battles you may not be aware of, and you’ll need to backtrack to revive them. In a fascinating game design decision, pawns can also become infected with a virus that spreads among these non-playable characters. Pawns who contract a disease known as Dragonsplague , an affliction you’ll hear about dozens of times from your chatty pawns, can lead to mass devastation in the game.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a strange mixture of systems. From its unique pawn mechanics to a perplexing save system , it’s not designed to be player-friendly. It rewards curiosity, and sometimes choosing the most difficult road. It has pronounced flaws: It runs at a chunky frame rate at times; the game’s map and UI are clumsy; and many mechanics and quests are poorly explained. It has jank . But it overcomes its shortcomings with confidence and vision, giving players freedom to discover the world at their pace and forge memorable and personal stories.

An Arisen takes down a big chimera in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Early in my experience with Dragon’s Dogma 2 , I found myself exploring far from my home base, the castle town of Vernworth. The sun set and I became lost in the woods, looking for a group of monsters to cull as part of a task. I was taken by surprise by a spellcasting necromancer who commanded a small army of skeleton warriors. Over the course of a 10-minute battle, these undead foes eventually overcame us, as my character and my pawns fell one by one. I learned then that I was underpowered for such a fight, unprepared to face the deadlier nighttime monsters of Vermund’s wilderness. I learned the importance of rest, either by camping or saving my progress at an inn in one of the game’s smattering of towns.

Later, I would encounter powerful drakes and angry minotaurs who would also trounce me and my troupe. I was smashed out of the sky by a griffin as I rode a wooden gondola across a ropeway. I fought alongside a warrior named Sigmund as we battled a lesser drake atop a crumbling tower. These battles would become more memorable than the main story of Dragon’s Dogma 2 , the game’s weakest component.

Although the game’s story starts strongly, it doesn’t end up being the point. You are cast as an Arisen, a chosen one whose heart has been claimed by a dragon and who is destined to rule the kingdom of Vermund. Jailed and left to rot as a slave laborer, you then learn that someone else has laid claim to being the Arisen as part of a shadowy conspiracy, denying you your rightful place on the throne. Over the course of a few missions given to you by sympathetic believers in your destiny as the Arisen, you can eventually root out the imposter. But Dragon’s Dogma 2 ’s narrative stutters and spurts as it moves past its premise, and the story laid out by its writers meanders. By the end of the game, I had lost interest in getting my revenge and largely forgotten why I should even care about the villains who had crossed me. The smaller, more emergent stories that come from side quests and exploration compelled me, not the ultimately messy and unsatisfying plot.

A mage casts an illumination spell in a forest at nighttime as goblins attack in a screenshot from Dragon’s Dogma 2

By the end of the game, I had uncovered much of its huge world, increasingly discovering that there’s not much variety in the monsters that I fight. At this point, I’ve battled hundreds of goblins, dozens of bandits and harpies, handfuls of ogres, minotaurs, and cyclops. Battles have begun to feel increasingly dull as a result; it’s a huge world with too little variety in the things I fight.

It’s the exploration that kept me going, even as I almost accidentally “beat” the game before I was emotionally ready to do so. I saw the conclusion within sight, and so I retreated to take a more circuitous path. The spectacle that comes from fighting giant brass statues or talking dragons isn’t nearly as attractive as discovering a well-hidden enclave of elves — who don’t even speak my language! — or a giant sphinx armed with challenging riddles .

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the best video game adventure I’ve experienced since Elden Ring , a far more approachable open-world game that has no doubt colored how players perceive this year’s big fantasy RPG. (It certainly did for me.) But like another FromSoftware game, the original Demon’s Souls , I found that once I had accepted Dragon’s Dogma 2 ’s peculiarities and deciphered what it was asking of me, I fell deeply in love. Dragon’s Dogma 2 awakens those old feelings of learning to overcome my expectations of what a game should be, then discovering new types of experiences along the way. That’s the best kind of journey.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 was released March 22 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The game was reviewed on PlayStation 5 using a pre-release download code provided by Capcom. Five new Steam games you probably missed (April 8, 2024)

Sorting through every new game on Steam so you don't have to.

Buckshot Roulette

2024 games : Upcoming releases Best PC games : All-time favorites Free PC games : Freebie fest Best FPS games : Finest gunplay Best MMOs : Massive worlds Best RPGs : Grand adventures

On an average day about a dozen new games are released on Steam. And while we think that's a good thing, it can be understandably hard to keep up with. Potentially exciting gems are sure to be lost in the deluge of new things to play unless you sort through every single game that is released on Steam. So that’s exactly what we’ve done. If nothing catches your fancy this week, we've gathered the  best PC games  you can play right now and a running list of the  2024 games  that are launching this year.

Buckshot Roulette

Steam‌ ‌page‌  ‌ Release:‌ April 5 Developer:‌ Mike Klubnika

Originally released on itch.io last year, Buckshot Roulette has made a big bloody splash with its arrival on Steam, proving there's no shortage of sickos Russian roulette enthusiasts out there. The game is pretty simple: enter a den of iniquity, place your bets against the creepy opponent, and then cop a shotgun round in the head if you lose. It doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun when laid bare like that, but the morbid atmosphere is what elevates Buckshot Roulette, with its disturbing subterranean bunker setting mixing well with the coldness of its techno soundtrack. It's the work of Mike Klubnika, whose horror mini-game compilation Unsorted Horror was well-received by sickos upon release last year. Needless to say, not for the faint of heart. There are leaderboards.

Withering Rooms

Steam‌ ‌page‌  ‌ Release:‌ April 5 Developer:‌ Moonless Formless

Launched from Early Access into 1.0 last week, Withering Rooms is a sidescrolling, procedurally generated take on Resident Evil, with RPG progression and scrappy combat. Set in a creepy Victorian mansion (is there a Victorian mansion that isn't creepy?), the objective seems to be to escape, but good luck: there's a lot of baddies and not very many goodies, and even the goodies are a bit suss. It's a gorgeous looking game, with a lot more variety than the Victorian mansion setting would suggest.

Steam‌ ‌page‌  ‌ Release:‌ April 3 Developers:‌ Youcan Co., Ltd Quit Today is a roguelite beat 'em up about going out with a bang. Forced to resign from a meaningless corporate job due to being branded a traitor, the newly liberated / unemployed protagonist must escape unscathed from the premises. That means, of course, beating the crap out of former colleagues with a briefcase! The office building is scattered with various buffs and upgrades to make that process a little easier and more enjoyable, and there are a handful of companions you can call upon for help. Looks like some cathartic fun for the terminally deskbound.

Silent Breath

Steam‌ ‌page ‌ ‌ Release:‌ April 6 Developer:‌ Exodiac Studios

PC Gamer Newsletter

Sign up to get the best content of the week, and great gaming deals, as picked by the editors.

Silent Breath is a first-person horror with a very convincing found footage aesthetic. Armed with just a 1990s camcorder, the hapless protagonist must search a mysterious forest for missing people, and—surprise, surprise—those people are missing because of some freaky shit. The camcorder point of view makes for a startlingly realistic presentation, but it's the microphone implementation that is the star: if you scream or, presumably, murmur a shocked swear word in Silent Breath, the monstrosities are going to hear you. This is an Early Access affair: the full version will release by the end of the year with "new scares", VR implementation, and more.

Dishwashing Simulator

Steam‌ ‌page‌  ‌ Release:‌ April 3 Developer:‌ Frinky, Frosty

Man, I don't even know what Dishwashing Simulator is. There is definitely some dishwashing involved, but there also appears to be lots of aimless wandering through disturbing dungeons that feel torn from a fever dream or, maybe more accurately, the Windows 3D Maze screensaver (with better lighting). There's also "base building", though it's more akin to decorating an underground lair. Anyway, despite my confusion I'm definitely very keen to check out Dishwashing Simulator. So says the Steam description: "In Dishwashing Simulator, washing dishes is not just a chore, it's your existence, a puzzle to solve, and a journey to freedom. Don't be fooled by the suds and bubbles, there's more beneath the surface than you'd expect."

Shaun Prescott

Shaun Prescott is the Australian editor of PC Gamer. With over ten years experience covering the games industry, his work has appeared on GamesRadar+, TechRadar, The Guardian, PLAY Magazine, the Sydney Morning Herald, and more. Specific interests include indie games, obscure Metroidvanias, speedrunning, experimental games and FPSs. He thinks Lulu by Metallica and Lou Reed is an all-time classic that will receive its due critical reappraisal one day.
