The Guinness Storehouse In Dublin: The Tours, History + What To Expect

A visit to the Guinness Storehouse is one of the most popular things to do in Dublin and it’s the most-visited of the many paid tourist attractions in Ireland .

Located at St James’s Gate, the Guinness Factory sits on the site where Arthur Guinness set up shop with a 9,000-year lease in 1759.

There are several different Guinness Brewery tours to head off on, and we’ll take you through the best of the bunch in this guide.

You’ll also get some handy visitor info (e.g. try and visit late afternoon!) along with the history of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin and more. Dive on in!

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows before you visit the Guinness Storehouse

Although the Guinness tour is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

The Guinness factory is located slightly off Dublin’s south quays here . It’s a 15-minute walk from St. Patrick’s Cathedral , a 20-minute walk from Kilmainham Gaol and  very  short walk from some of the best whiskey distilleries in Dublin .

2. Book online to avoid the queues

So, you can just rock up and buy tickets for the Guinness tour on the day, but you’ll likely have to queue (the queues here are often very long). So, it’s worth buying your Guinness tour tickets online in advance. More on this below.

3. Opening Hours

The Guinness factory opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10 am-5 pm, Saturday, 9:30 am-6 pm, and Sundays from 9:30 am to 5 pm. If you book your Guinness tour tickets online, you’ll need to pick a specific time.

So, there’s some very limited free parking at the Guinness Storehouse on Crane Street, ( see it here  on Google Maps). There’s paid parking near the Four Courts here (15-minute walk away).

5. Part of the Dublin Pass

Exploring Dublin over 1 or 2 days? If you buy a Dublin Pass for €70 you can save from €23.50 to €62.50 on Dublin’s top attractions, like the EPIC Museum, the Guinness Storehouse, The GPO, the Jameson Distillery Bow St. and more (info here ).

The History of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin

guinness history

Photos in the Public Domain

When you visit the Guinness Brewery in Dublin, you’re treading on hallowed ground! It was the original site where Arthur Guinness began his brewery business in 1759.

Planning for the future, he signed a 9,000-year lease at £45 per annum and started brewing his dark porter-style ales. He used dark malt to create his stout, which was instantly a favourite with river and street porters, among other local workers.

Then things escalated

Ten years later, he decided to begin exporting, shipping a modest 6.5 barrels to England, and the rest, as they say, is history. By 1886, Guinness sales reached 1.13 million barrels a year, and the company was floated on the stock market.

That was in spite of the fact that Guinness owned no bars or pubs and refused to advertise (this changed drastically over time). The product spoke for itself.

The decline and joining up with Diageo

In the 1970s, Guinness sales had declined, so the owners had to relaunch it and introduce pale malt. The company merged with Diageo in 1997 but retained the Guinness brand’s rights and trademarked the Irish harp logo.

Now, in early-2024, Guinness is a roaring success both at home and overseas. However, not all pints are equal – see our guide to finding the best Guinness in Dublin for more.

The different Guinness Storehouse tours

As I mentioned before, we’ve done the Guinness Storehouse tour several times over the years. They come in the guided (during ‘normal’ times) and self-guided form.

Having done both, I can’t recommend the guided tour of the Guinness Storehouse enough. The tour guides are brilliant, and you’ll just have a more enjoyable experience.

1. Guinness Storehouse Experience (€30)

This is arguably the most popular Guinness Factory tour, as it involves polishing off your visit with a pint in the Gravity Bar.

This self-guided tour (affiliate link) costs €30 and it should take you around 1.5 hours from start to finish, depending on how long you linger. Here’s what it involves:

  • A Guinness (18 +) or a soft drink in the Gravity Bar
  • You get to ramble around the Guinness Brewery
  • Experience Canvas D8; a summer programme of culture and art
  • A guaranteed timed entrance

2. Guinness Storehouse Experience + Guinness Academy (€38)

This tour includes everything in the storehouse experience, with the one incredible addition of learning how to pour your own pint in the Guinness Academy.

This version of the Guinness Factory tour costs €38 and, with the addition of the Guinness Academy, is pretty similar to the first tour. It includes:

  • Tuition in the Guinness Academy where you will learn to pour a pint

3. The Jameson + Guinness tour combo (€97)

Now, the final tour (affiliate link) will suit those of you that plan on also visiting the Jameson Distillery on Bow St .

This is a combo, skip-the-line ticket that includes both attractions. It starts around €97 , and it includes the best of both tours. Here’s what you get:

  • Timed skip-the-line entrance to the Jameson Distillery
  • Timed skip-the-line entrance to the Guinness Storehouse tour
  • 2 drinks (pint of Guinness + 1 Jameson)
  • Photo stop outside the Brazen Head (the oldest pub in Dublin)

You’ll often see the Guinness Factory mentioned in guides to the best museums in Dublin . This puzzles some, but it is a museum of sorts.

The Storehouse is home to fixtures from the Guinness Brewery’s original days. Interestingly enough, some of these are from over 250 years ago.

3. Old-school Guinness ads

Immerse yourself in 80 years of Guinness advertising – you’ll be surprised at some of the memories it brings back! Interact with the ads and take selfies that put you in your very own Guinness ad.

4. The journey to greatness

Things to do at the Guinness Factory in Dublin

Tour aside, there are plenty of other things to do at the Guinness Storehouse that’ll make your visit an enjoyable one.

From tasting and learning to your face on a pint (yes, your face  on  a pint) and more, there’s a little bit of something to tickle every fancy.

1. The Tasting Experience

Moseying around the Guinness Storehouse and learning lots of interesting facts about this Irish brew is thirsty work. The Tasting Experience is a hands-on multi-sensory journey introducing visitors to this unique stout.

Pause and smell the aromas emanating from the creamy head (just like wine tasting, really!) and then sip the velvety smooth brew. Deeeeee-licious!

2. The Guinness Academy

There’s a definite art to pouring the perfect pint, and the Guinness Academy is the place to learn it for yourself.

Get behind the bar and follow instructions from the Beer Specialist on hand, who will give you some useful tips. You’ll be able to tell a bad pint of Guinness from a good one from then on!

3. The STOUTie

the stoutie

Within the STOUTie Room walls, guests can purchase a second glass of Guinness and see their own Selfie smiling up from the creamy head.

It’s a unique moment combining the latest technology with a little extra malt extract for a picture-perfect pint!

4. Enjoy a Pint at the Gravity Bar

The Gravity Bar is one of the most unique rooftop bars in Dublin and it’s the perfect place to linger over a pint or try one of the experimental brews.

The panoramic views through the wall of glass add to this unforgettable experience. You can also see a specially commissioned artwork by Irish street artist, Aches.

Places to visit nearby after the Guinness Factory tour

One of the beauties of the Guinness tour is that, when you’re finished, you’re a short distance away from some of the best places to visit in Dublin .

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from the Guinness Storehouse (plus places to eat and where to grab a post-adventure pint!).

1. Whiskey distilleries (3 to 6-minute walk)

roe and co distillery

If the Guinness tour has you thirsty for more alcohol activities, you’re in luck – some of the top whiskey distilleries in Ireland are a short walk away. Roe and Co (6-minute walk), Pearse Lyons (5-minute walk) and the Teeling distillery (15-minute walk) are all nearby.

2. Dublin’s Oldest pub (10-minute walk)

Very much the reigning champion of ancient pubs in Dublin , and by some distance! Just a 10-minute walk from the Guinness Factory and Proudly boasting on a scroll of painted parchment on the pub’s whitewashed walls that it dates back to 1198, the Brazen Head is Dublin’s oldest pub and is also one of its most popular. See our guide to the oldest pubs in Dublin for more.

3. Phoenix Park (15-minute walk)

Dominated by the 200ft tall Wellington Monument, Phoenix Park is an enormous space and one of the largest enclosed public parks in any capital city in Europe (the Wellington Monument is also the largest obelisk in Europe!). Make the 15-minute stroll across the Liffey and up Wolfe Tone Quay to explore its vast expanse. It’s also home to Dublin Zoo and Áras an Uachtaráin .

4. Kilmainham Gaol (20-minute walk)

kilmainham gaol dublin

Infamous for being the site of incarceration for many Nationalist leaders, Kilmainham Gaol has played a hugely significant and symbolic part in Irish history and the prison is well worth a visit. Lying a 20-minute walk west of Roe and Co, former inmates include Charles Stewart Parnell, Patrick Pearse and Eamon de Valera.

Guinness Storehouse in Dublin

When visiting Ireland you’re likely on the hunt for the best Guinness in Dublin. Everyone says the Guinness in Ireland tastes different. (It really is true!) But, since you’re a curious person, you want to visit Ireland and the mecca of Guinness to either agree or disagree. Read on to hear more about visiting the Guinness Storehouse and things to know in advance. I’ve visited twice with two different ticket types so I have first hand experience and recommendations.

Tips for Visiting Guinness Storehouse in Dublin :

Buy your tickets in advance.

Since the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin is one of the top attractions to visit definitely buy your tickets in advance online. It’s a self guided tour, but you choose the time of entry for your ticket. Especially if you’re visiting during a busy time of year or there is a large event in town it will be a lot busier. Don’t just assume you can buy them when you get there!

All experiences are not the same

What is most important to you when visiting the Guinness Storehouse? That will help to determine which ticket is right for you.

When purchasing your tickets you’ll notice that there are many different types of tickets with different activities included. I’ve experienced both the very basic ticket and the VIP Connoisseur experience.

All tickets will include the “museum” or learning about Guinness history and making beer through an interactive experience as well as a pint of beer to drink at the Gravity Bar.

The Academy experience includes another pint of Guinness and learning how to pour the perfect pint. A newer experience includes a beer with your picture on it. This is called a stoutie. With this ticket you get a second pint of beer with a fancy photo in the foam (much like fancy latte art at coffee shops.) A great photo op for the ‘gram! (P.S. Lets be friends! Follow me on the gram for all of my (beer) adventures in Ireland and beyond.) WanderLust in Real Life Instagram

The most all inclusive experience includes the museum and learning about Guinness origins, learning how to pour the perfect pint as well as a more intimate experience trying some more rare Guinness beers in a back lit bar with a small group. When we did the connoisseur experience in 2017 we also were given some bottles of our favorite beer to take with us. It was our honeymoon so they essentially gave them bottles of all of them when everyone else had to select 1-2 favorites. If you love craft beer, definitely splurge for this ticket! If you plan ahead, you could bring beer in your checked luggage home .

All of the beers in the glass fridges while theres a flight of unique Guinness beers sitting on top of a back lit bar top

Visit the Guinness Storehouse Gravity Bar for a great view over Dublin

Included in every ticket is a pint of Guinness at the Gravity Bar. They have expanded the Gravity Bar in 2020 to accommodate more people. It’s located on floor 7 of the Guinness Storehouse facility and has glass windows all the way around so you can see out over Dublin for a panoramic view.

Cheers with a pint of Guinness at the 7th floor glass lookout over Dublin at the Guinness Storehouse

There is luggage storage onsite

I wasn’t aware of this until my most recent visit, but they do have a luggage drop service here. So, if you’re looking for something to do in between when you have to head to the airport or immediately when you arrive but can’t yet check into your accommodation, why not check out the Guinness Storehouse for your first or last pint of the best Guinness in Dublin?

Length of time to visit

Be sure to allow yourself at least 2-3 hours to visit to take your time. There’s a lot to see, and plus you’re going to want to relax with a pint or two while you’re there. The first time I visited when I did the Connoisseur Experience I we spent more than that there. I think it was around 4 hours. There’s a lot to see and definitely don’t rush through it depending on what ticket you decided to purchase. If you’re planning on grabbing a bite to eat while there you may want to allow yourself additional time. But above all, don’t rush! You’ll be surprised how much time you can spend at the Storehouse drinking the best Guinness in Dublin.

Beyond the best Guinness in Dublin, food at Guinness Storehouse

If you’re planning to grab a bite onsite either before or after your Guinness Tour in Dublin at the Storehouse you can actually make reservations in advance at the 1837 Bar & Brasserie. Other options include the Brewer’s dining hall and the Cooperage Cafe. The Cafe is located on the first floor and is a quick bites more of a coffee shop with coffee, drinks & snacks. No matter what you fancy to eat, there are options at the Storehouse or there are many historic pubs all over Dublin. Read more about Dublin Things to do .

When to visit

Since the Guinness Storehouse experience is indoors you truly can visit rain or shine! Enjoying the Guinness Storehouse is not dependent on a gorgeous day. Even though my day feels a lot more sunny after a Guinness tour in Dublin with a pint in my hand.

It’s true!

The best Guinness is in fact at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. You should definitely be sure to do a Guinness tour in Dublin while you’re visiting Ireland. FAQ: Guinness Tours Dublin

When it comes to Ireland, a Guinness Brewery tour in Dublin is a must – especially if you’re hitting the capital city of Dublin . Cold pints of Guinness (with the perfect head, of course) have been quenching people’s thirst from around the world for over 250 years.

Needless to say, there is endless history to explore and plenty of opportunities to get your hands on a pint or two in Dublin.

Whether you’re looking for an in-depth look at the brewing process or a spot of traditional Irish music and dancing, finding the right Guinness tour Dublin can offer you requires having all of the information. So, let’s get started!

Is the Guinness Academy Tour Worth It?

Not every Guinness tour Dublin has to offer is going to be the right one for you

It is absolutely worth taking a Guinness tour while you’re in Dublin! Taking a Guinness tour in Dublin is as much a rite of passage as it is an education in beer brewing and Irish history.

The tour not only provides you with a fascinating insight into the making of the iconic stout that has the world smitten, but you also get a birds-eye view of Dublin city from the Gravity Bar, with a complimentary pint in hand.

The journey from barley to beer is beautifully narrated and presented, making it an immersive cultural experience that shouldn’t be missed. It’s not just about the beer at the Guinness Storehouse, it’s about the stories, the history, the people, and the pride that’s poured into every pint!

How Long Does it Take to Do the Guinness Tour in Dublin?

The self-guided Guinness tour at the Dublin Storehouse is 2 hours long, however, brewmasters recommend spending a minimum of 90 minutes drinking in the historic past of this iconic beer, while sipping away on a cold pint yourself throughout the tour.

Of the tours I mentioned above that include visits to the Storehouse itself, all of them include guided portions as well as self-guided portions as you make your way through the Gravity Bar. You can spend as little or as long as you want, but the self-guided tour typically lasts between 1-2 hours.

Is There a Dress Code for Guinness Storehouse?

dublin guinness tour tickets

Long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and closed-toed shoes are the required dress code for the Guinness Factory tour .

Regardless of which Guinness tour Dublin piques your interest, tourists who fail to properly dress for the occasion may be denied entry into certain areas of the tour.

What Does the Guinness Storehouse Tour Include?

During The Guinness Storehouse Tour, visitors will be treated to an interactive journey across seven floors, surrounding the central glass atrium shaped like a pint of Guinness.

The tour includes an introduction to the ingredients used in brewing and the process itself, a guided tasting session, and the opportunity to learn and practice pouring the perfect pint. Your ticket also grants you access to the Gravity Bar, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Dublin while savoring a complimentary pint of Guinness.

Filled with interactive exhibits and enriched by the company of experienced guides, the tour encapsulates the essence of the Guinness brand and its storied history.

Is Guinness in Dublin Different from Elsewhere in the World?

Coming from someone who drank a lot of Guinness in Ireland as well as other parts of the world, Guinness is definitely different in the country as a whole when compared globally.

It’s lighter, more refreshing, and it simply tastes better. Makes sense, right? I mean, anything that’s brewed right in front of you is likely going to have a cleaner, and overall better taste!

Is Guinness Good in Dublin?

dublin guinness tour tickets

Yes, Guinness is delicious in Dublin! You don’t have to go on a Guinness tour to prove that either. Simply stop into any local pub and order a few rounds to give it a go and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

How Much Does a Pint of Guinness Cost in Dublin?

The average pint of Guinness will run you about €5.50 – €6.50 across most Dublin pubs and bars, while the price for a pint in the Guinness Storehouse is slightly more expensive at around €7.

However, when you compare this to other cities such as London or Paris where you’d pay upwards of €8-€9 for the same pint, it’s still a great deal. Sláinte!

Where is the Best Pint of Guinness in Ireland?

While Guinness across the country as a whole is unrivaled throughout the world, most locals will tell you that the best pint of Guinness in Ireland can be found at Gravediggers Pub (John Kavanagh’s) in Glasnevin !

How to Order a Guinness in Dublin

dublin guinness tour tickets

To order a Guinness in Dublin, you can simply say “I’ll have a pint” or something similar. It’s the most ordered beverage country-wide, so the bartender will likely know to what you are referring.

↪️ Pro Tip: Just be sure to order all of your stouts first so they have time to settle. Otherwise, the bartender may give you an earful if you order 6 Bulmers and a Guinness at the end.

Guinness Storehouse Dublin Ticket Prices

Guinness tours in Dublin often pour a shamrock on the head of thw Guinness before serving

If you decide to skip the Guinness tour altogether and just pay for entry to the Storehouse on your own, here is the ticket cost breakdown:

Guinness Storehouse Experience – €22

Guinness Academy Experience – €34

STOUTie Experience – €30

Connoisseur Experience – €95

Each of these different “experiences” offers unique tastings and inclusions (like your selfie printed on the head – also known as the foam on top of the Guinness – during the STOUTie Experience), but none rival the adventures that accompany the tour groups guided by the local Irishmen.

If you’re looking to immerse yourself in Irish culture, be surrounded by traditional Irish music, and share the experience with some friendly locals, then don’t consider skipping one of the tours I mentioned above.

Can You Go to the Guinness Gravity Bar without a Tour?

dublin guinness tour tickets

Unfortunately, anyone not on the premises for a Guinness Storehouse tour will not be allowed to enter the Gravity Bar.

Owing to the nature of the storefront and the operations that take place to keep guests moving efficiently while enjoying all there is to see, allowing anyone not on a tour to hang out at the bar for hours on end would disrupt the flow of guests and take away from the overall in-house experience.

Fortunately, if you simply want to sit back and enjoy a few rounds of Guinness, there are literally hundreds of nearby pubs that will allow you to do just that! But, if you want to enter the Gravity Bar at the Guinness Storehouse, you’ll be required to enter via a guided tour.

When is the Guinness Storehouse Open?

Monday through Friday the Guinness Storehouse opening hours are from 10AM to 5PM and Saturdays and Sundays the Storehouse is open from 9:30AM to 5PM.

It’s also important to note that the last admission to the Storehouse occurs at 5PM on the dot.

Where is the Guinness Factory in Ireland?

dublin guinness tour tickets

Fortunately for travelers, the Guinness Factory is located in Dublin, Ireland just a mere 30-minute car ride from the country’s main international airport!

How Far is the Guinness Storehouse from Dublin?

Depending on which route you take, the Guinness Storehouse is between 10-15 miles from the airport which takes about 25-40 minutes to get to during high traffic times.

If you’re coming from the Dublin Airport (DUB), then there are actually a few different routes you can take to get to the Guinness Storehouse.

Assuming you have a rental vehicle, you can stay on the main freeways (M50, R148, and R810) and go around the city which is actually usually about 10-15 minutes faster than following the most direct path through Dublin’s city center. Thanks to the one million pedestrians and heavy car traffic you’ll find in the city, you’ll want to avoid that route if possible.

The journey around the city is a bit farther in distance (about 15 miles/24km compared to 10 miles/16km) than the route that cuts right through the city, but you’ll be avoiding lots of one-way streets, heavy pedestrian and car traffic, and all of the lights and stop signs.

What is the History Behind the Guinness Factory?

dublin guinness tour tickets

While you’re certainly going to learn a lot more about the history behind the Guinness Factory during your guided tour, here’s an exceptional video you can check out that will give you a really impressive rundown in just a few short minutes before you depart.

How do I Pour the Perfect Pint of Guinness?

While no one can deny my skills at drinking the perfect pint of Guinness, I am absolutely no master at pouring one.

Therefore, here’s a great video from Alan who works at the Gravity Bar in Dublin who is going to explain exactly how to pour your very own perfect pint of Guinness when you arrive!

Guinness Storehouse Discount Tickets and Groupons

The best Guinness tour Dublin has to offer includes multiple tastings

If you’re like me and you are always looking for a discount code or hoping to save some euros here or there, I totally get it.

Unfortunately, as far as the Guinness tour Dublin comes up with as the perfect fit for you and your trip, it’s pretty unlikely you’re going to find any discount codes.

I have found some in the past, but they ended up being for tour operators that I haven’t listed in this post for good reason . Do yourself a favor and look to save money elsewhere on your trip to Ireland.

Your experience is going to be directly impacted by the amount that you spend in this case, so it’s worth budgeting for the extra money here.

The Guinness Storehouse is located at the St James Gate Brewery in Dublin, Ireland.

It is estimated that the Storehouse has received over 4 million visitors since first opening in 2000 and has become a prominent feature on Dublin’s tourism landscape. A new wing was opened in 2006 which includes a live demonstration of the modern brewing process.

The tour takes you through 7 levels of the building, which are designed around an atrium shaped in the form of a Guinness glass.

The entire building explains the history of beer through various multimedia exhibitions which illustrate the ingredients, production, storage, transportation, and marketing surrounding Guinness.

Arthur Guinness signed a 9000-year lease when he first began making Guinness at the brewery and a copy of this document is available for viewing at the bottom of the glass atrium.

You will also be treated to several bars throughout the tour. The Perfect Pint bar allows you to pour your own Guinness pint, and as a bonus, give you the opportunity to have your selfie placed on top of the pint.

The fifth floor introduces visitors to the Brewery Bar where one can enjoy authentic Irish cuisine and refreshments. The meals served in this bar are prepared by using Guinness as part of the ingredients and as a pairing with the food.

You can also find the Guinness Archive on your tour, where visitors can view records dating back all the way to 1759. There are photographs, videos, maps, posters and other items that document the history of Guinness in Ireland and the world.

The tour ends on the 7th floor where you will find the Gravity Bar , a 360-degree bar with a glass lining that allows you to view the entire Dublin from the best view in town .

Bypass all the queues and make use of the Guinness Skip the Line ticket and enjoy the freedom to explore at your own time. It also helps add some more hours to your travel schedule by not having to wait in long lines!

  • Best view of Dublin city
  • Interactive Tour
  • Entry queues can be long in peak season
  • Gravity Bar can be noisy and crowded during popular times

There is a lot to see as you walk through this facility. Very educational about beer in general as well as Guinness. The Guinness at the end was definitely the payoff for walking up to the lounge with a view of Dublin.

A must when in Dublin Good option if you want to skip crowds.

This was such an awesome experience. The history of Jameson was presented in 3D, very interactive presentation. I actually learned a lot, which made the tasting that much more great.
