Artist Information

Echo & The Bunnymen, one of the most influential British bands in modern history, have announced their 2022 North American tour to celebrate their 40th Anniversary.

The tour will celebrate the songs that have brought the group twenty top 20 hits, including The Killing Moon, Bring On The Dancing Horse, Never Stop, Seven Seas and Nothing Lasts Forever and nine top 20 albums so far during their 40 year career.

Front man Ian McCulloch said: “I can’t wait for this upcoming tour of America and Toronto. It will be a continuation of the U.K. tour we did in February/March of this year which was my favourite ever tour and talking to fans and friends after shows and reading loads of brilliant comments from Bunnymen and Bunnywomen, all saying pretty much what I was feeling…that some new magical ingredient had been added to the starlight and the moonbeams and the angels and the devils that live inside the songs. I love, and the band love, touring around America at any time but the experiences of special night after special night in the U.K. makes me certain we will take the shows up another level or two in the U.S.A. and Canada. - See you soon, Mac X

The band’s seminal albums "Crocodiles", "Heaven Up Here”, “Porcupine”, and “Ocean Rain” have been a major influence for acts such as Coldplay, The Killers, Hole and The Flaming Lips, whilst later albums “Evergreen”, “What Are You Going To Do With Your Life”, “Siberia” and “Meteorites” demonstrate what an amazing body of work the band have.

Their most recent work, “The Stars, The Oceans & The Moon”, was released in 2018 with Q Magazine simply calling it "Magical."

I love, and the band love, touring around America at any time but the experiences of special night after special night in the U.K. makes me certain we will take the shows up another level or two in the U.S.A. and Canada. – See you soon, Mac X 😎”

The bands seminal albums “Crocodiles”, “Heaven Up Here”, “Porcupine”, and “Ocean Rain” have been a major influence for acts such as Coldplay, The Killers, Hole and The Flaming Lips, whilst later albums “Evergreen”, “What Are You Going To Do With Your Life”, “Siberia” and “Meteorites” demonstrate what an amazing body of work the band have.

A return to musical roots is a time-honored tradition for many established artists who have endured for the better part of a decade. Forming and shaping an identity can take an album or two, and perpetuating forward motion while perfecting a sound can take another. Sometimes a swerve gets thrown in, an unseen obstacle sets itself in the middle of a path, or an experiment or two get eked out for one reason or another. But oftentimes by this point in a career an itch pops up to circle back to where it all began in order to do what the artist does best. And so, for their fourth album as Cayucas, brothers Zach and Ben Yudin are heading back to the beach—in other words, to the sunny, vibrant, melodic rock from which they first paddled out.

A year or so on from their third album Real Life and nearly a decade since their debut, Bigfoot, in the summer of 2019 Cayucas sat down to take stock of their lot. With Real Life they had achieved a bigger, poppier, more bombastic sound; before that, with 2015’s Dancing at the Blue Lagoon, they had explored a moodier and more artsy terrain. Bigfoot had put them on the indie pop map with its catchy songwriting, buoyant rhythms, and singalong choruses, with lyrics celebrating the bright, coastal Californian life and all it has to offer. And so, dipping back into the creative juices still firmly flowing following the Real Life recording process and tour, the Yudins got started on a new album with a familiar tinge.

“We were on tour and I had the idea to write a song called ‘Blue Schwinn’ to get back to our roots,” Zach says. “We had this mantra: Back to the beach. That kickstarted the creative process. We were listening to a ton of Beach Boys music, fantasizing about living coastal again, and writing songs reminiscent of the original demos I wrote for Cayucas back in 2011—that’s kind of our base. For the first time in a while that idea felt really fresh and exciting; let’s go back to what really worked for us as songwriters and felt special, and what was most authentic for who we are as artists. To write songs that hearken back to where it all started now feels really good again.”

Inspired by that directive, the classic Pet Sounds and Smile Beach Boys sessions, the rhythmic groove of Jan & Dean, and an actual baby blue Schwinn bicycle Zach had owned when the band was going by the name Oregon Bike Trails ten years ago, the brothers began writing new material last fall. Digging up old drum loops, bass lines, and other samples from the personal Cayucas sound archive to pair with newly composed guitar riffs, vintage reverb effects, and other sonic elements, they quickly pieced together a few dozen short song ideas. “Blue Schwinn” was soon retitled “Summer Moon” and would be the first complete tune recorded for a new album, but despite the change its nostalgic Santa Monica/beach cruiser vibe remains. “I love a strong sense of nostalgia in a song, and a vintage baby blue Schwinn just creates the mood for me,” Zach says.

Working completely on their own in their home studio in Highland Park, Los Angeles, over the final weeks of 2019 and the first few months of 2020, they recorded three more similarly themed and toned songs. “From the Rafters” was rebuilt from a 2015-era demo unearthed by Ben that he says was originally a take on “Surfin’ USA.”“Yeah Yeah Yeah,” with its Brian Wilson meets Beck textures, is about the contradiction of the West LA fantasy rock and roll life—“I’m on a Peugeot in the Palisades”—juxtaposed with their regular guy roots. And the creation of “Malibu 79” perfectly illustrates the brothers’ working dynamic: Zach began by throwing everything he could at the wall, including a theremin track, then stepped aside for Ben to determine what had stuck. At that point an album with a clear identity was beginning to take shape, fueled by their rediscovered sound as well as a consistent work ethic.

“Very rarely do we have major differences,” Ben says. “The songs can be very different but they have to feel cohesive in order to work together conceptually on an album.” “We work on music every day, slowly chipping away,” Zach adds. “That’s how we feel productive. Plus we’ve gotten a lot better at songwriting over the last five years, so now we feel like we can turn those old demos into better songs. We use what we call our blink reaction while listening to music we write; your ‘blink’ works even better if you’re not as connected to the song. It’s about being honest and asking which section could be better. It can be a hard question to ask because it means it’s not finished.”

The band continued writing, revisiting, and recording at home throughout the spring of 2020— performing essentially every discernible task for the album short of mastering. The gem “California Girl” jangles and sparkles like the sun glinting on the sheet glass of the Pacific, with its veritable checklist of Golden State highlights woven through a classic “boy spots girl” narrative, while “Red-Yellow Bonfire” is a nostalgic, impossibly catchy acoustic groover ready- made for beachside campfire singalongs. And while at first listen the tracks may seem to simplify the glory of a sunny SoCal day, there is typically a slight pang or sense of longing present in the lyrics, such as with the line “it used to be easy—back when it was easy” from “Bonfire.”

The eight tracks also mark the first time Zach will earn a producer credit for a Cayucas album. The Yudins’ studio, dubbed Corner Pocket, is filled with many vintage pieces of equipment, but a vintage reverb tank found in Japan and a DanElectro with space echo may appear on the album more than any other sound.

When it came time to title the record, only one phrase seemed to capture the mood correctly. “The album is called Blue Summer, which is a lyric in the song ‘Malibu ’79 Long,’” Zach says. “It just felt right as a title. It was simple, classic and evokes the mood.

No matter your feelings about the warmest season, be sure that Cayucas will always be there to provide its perfect soundtrack.

Echo & the Bunnymen Open North American Tour in Atlanta

echo and the bunnymen tour opening act

By Max Stewart

Liverpool’s Echo & the Bunnymen are trailblazers in the British post-punk scene since forming in 1978, with bands such as Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Pavement, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, and The Killers all citing the band’s shadowy psychedelic interpretation of the genre as a major influence. To celebrate their long-tenure, founding members Ian McCulloch (Vocalist) and Will Sergeant (Guitarist) have lead the charge for a leg of shows across the U.S. and Canada in ‘Celebrating 40 Years of Magical Songs.’ The opening night of the tour at Atlanta’s Tabernacle was ripe with anticipation, as droves of Gen Xers and many younger generations of fans were eager to see one of the pioneers of new wave kick off their twenty-something date tour across North America.

The show started with a heavy dose of their seminal 1980 opener, Crocodiles , including “Going Up,” “All That Jazz,” and a rousing version of “Rescue.” The crowd lit up for “Bring On the Dancing Horses,” and the band seemed to be finding their groove with the audience fully locked in. At some point in the night, however, it was clear McCulloch was not feeling 100% and shortly after “Nothing Lasts Forever” (with a snippet of Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side”), McCulloch exited stage left and the band took an intermission. The audience (and seemingly band members as well) were all perplexed but hoping that McCulloch was feeling well, as he was wearing a trenchcoat on a very hot evening in Georgia.

Like a true scouser, McCulloch muscled his way through the end of the set as the band reemerged to a round of applause. He actually vomited immediately following “Lips Like Sugar” at the side stage, then reemerged for the encore with “The Killing Moon.” Wow. We definitely have never seen anything like that before. Pure dedication to finishing the show. The set ended up being much shorter than a typical Echo & the Bunnymen concert, which was disappointing for some audience members who traveled near and far, but for McCulloch to power through feeling under the weather was impressive. We all just hope he is alright and we wish him and the rest of the band well the rest of the tour.

The band tweeted after the show : “ Thanks for a brilliant gig tonight Atlanta ✊🏻 Mac sends his love & thanks for being with him tonight when was sick, he carried on when he should’ve stopped but sang on, he’s feeling a lot better now, onwards. ”

Fans transported back in time as Echo & The Bunnymen return for home gig

Fans were on their feet as Echo & the Bunnymen returned home as part of their latest tour.

Formed in Liverpool in 1978, Echo & The Bunnymen have been responsible for some of the most celebrated singles over their now 40+ year career. One of the most influential bands to hail from the city and Britain, the group have had twenty top 20 hits and nine top 20 albums in their long career since their debut, Crocodiles, in 1980.

Last September, the band enjoyed a momentous homecoming at the M&S Bank Arena, reprising the seminal Ocean Rain album now released 40 years ago, in collaboration with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. So I was excited to see what their latest tour - Songs to Learn and Sing - would bring, before it wraps up in the UK and the Europe and US legs follow.

The Liverpool Empire Theatre on Monday, March 25, was the first show of two in the city, as a second the following night was added due to popular demand. In the foyer before the show starts, there's scores of devoted fans who've followed the group through the decades, as well as the next generation of what appeared to be students and even children accompanied by family members.

Then there was my dad and I, who were lucky enough to be seeing the band for the second time, after first seeing Echo & The Bunnymen open for The Rolling Stones at Anfield Stadium in 2022. Echo & The Bunnymen's last studio album, The Stars & The Oceans & The Moon was released in 2018 - but the night saw them revisit their catalogue of incredible music still loved decades on.

Kicking off the night was singer and violinist Erica Nockalls, support act for the entire tour. Performing on stage with guitarist Jean-Charles Versari, the pair came on just after 8pm as the crowd steadily grew.

The lead vocals of Erica were powerful and at times haunting and throughout the performance, the combination of violin solos and guitar riffs was impeccable. A stand out song for me was Eiffel's Eye and they later concluded with Making Friends With an Alien, leaving the stage with a warm reception from the crowd. I think I'll definitely be revisiting her music.

After 9pm, a purple haze and dry ice filled the stage as Echo & The Bunnymen emerged. In the low-lighting, you could see Will Sergeant heading to the far left with his guitar and a silhouette of frontman Ian McCulloch in his signature sunglasses and bouffant hair.

Saluting the crowd as he walked on, McCulloch, as cool as ever, said 'hello Liverpool' before diving straight into Going Up and All That Jazz from their debut album. Moving seamlessly from one song into another, only a few words were mumbled in between songs to the crowd throughout the night and at some times it was hard to make out.

But with hits like theirs spanning decades, you arguably want as many songs played as possible and devout fans are there for one main thing, the music. As the set went on, more and more people were getting on their feet, and as someone who has grown up in an era where concerts and gigs are full of a sea of camera phones - it was nice to see the crowd just absorbed in the music, enjoying hits and not spending too much time watching it through their small screens.

The audience were transported back to the pinnacle of the band’s heyday and the despite performing hits from years gone by, the songs felt contemporary and revived. Echo & The Bunnymen were on form, confirmed by the huge applause and cheers that followed each song.

At one point, the band also played a new song, with frontman Ian telling the crowd "sing along if you know it - but you shouldn’t." Concluding the first half of the set was Bring On the Dancing Horses, a real crowd pleaser, before the band took a 20 minute break, with hits like Blondie's Heart of Glass and M's Pop Muzik playing over the PA while the audience got ready for part two.

Back on for 10pm, McCulloch heads to the mic - "did you all have a bevvy? Here’s the second half." It was a true Scouse homecoming, with members of the audience shouting "go on Ian lad" throughout the night.

Show of Strength and Over the Wall kicked off the second set, but the atmosphere became more electric when Seven Seas and Nothing Lasts Forever was played. Back on their feet, the crowd was singing along - but the audience truly erupted when the band played The Killing Moon.

It's the track that everyone waits for and to see it be performed in Liverpool - 40 years on from its original release - is a moment I will never forget. As soon as the opening riff was played, the energy from the fans was unbelievable.

To hear it played in their home city was always going to be something special. The Ocean Rain album was among those to define the the sound and atmosphere of the early 1980s and the crowd lapped up every line.

Sergeant's talent cannot be understated and during the track, the spotlight was on him alone. After loud cheers came another fan-favourite, Lips Like Sugar, which saw the audience still up and chanting the lyrics.

What came next was two encores - and if you can't do it in your home city, when can you. First up was The Cutter and then when the band returned on stage for the second time, they concluded with the iconic Ocean Rain.

A crescendo end to an incredible night, as homecoming gigs go, this was triumphant. "Songs to Learn and Sing" is the title of the tour and every song proved to be timeless - I agreed with my dad at the end of the night when he said it was "one for the history books."

Today, March 26, concludes their UK leg of the tour with a final show at the Liverpool Empire and it wouldn't' surprise me if those who went the first night tried to get their hands on a ticket for the second. To find out more about The Liverpool Empire Theatre, click here.
