Van nomads enjoy routes all over the United States, going east coast to the west coast and anywhere in between. Here is a guide for a fun trip in the van life all the way from Dallas, Texas to Seattle, Washington!

Once you have your van packed and an idea of your trip mapped out, get on the road from Dallas and head North for breakfast and coffee in the lovely Oklahoma City. This scenic drive over Red River takes only about three hours! Here are some good places you might stop for a bite in OKC:

  • Enjoy amazing espresso at Elemental Coffee Downtown
  • Grab coffee and a donut in the Plaza Arts District at Neon Coffee
  • Get some of the yummiest breakfast in the city at Stitch Cafe

If you have not already prepped the van, grab some snacks and get back on the road for a bit longer of a stretch from Oklahoma City to Denver!

Head north for a long stretch of road on your way to Denver! This drive is nearly ten hours through Kansas and Colorado! Kill some time by playing road trip games along the way or get off the beaten path to see even more of Colorado ! Once you get to Denver, this might be a good spot to stop in for the night.

If you have any trouble with your van or need any parts before the mountain passes to come, be sure to meet Irish Mike at Denver Big Van & Sprinter Repair . He is well-known and highly recommended in the Denver area van community for his skill and customer service!

One of the best parts of van life is, of course, being able to stop for rest wherever you want along the way. If you're needing a day to stretch your legs and see a cool city, stay in Denver! If you are wanting to stay on the road, we recommend continuing on north to the most glorious Wyoming. There are plenty of rest stops and scenic pull-offs to stop and camp. There is almost nothing more beautiful than waking up to a rural Wyoming sunrise.

Once you pass through Wyoming, head over to the lovely Idaho Falls. This charming city has plenty to offer along the Snake River. Grab a bite to eat, take a hike, or just enjoy a little break from the road! After you stop somewhere to get some rest, continue on! This roadtrip only gets more and more beautiful from here. We swear, one of the most beautiful places you'll see is the pass coming through the gorgeous mountain lake town Couer d'Alene. Listen to this song as you drive through it. Trust us.

Couer D'Alene is known as the "Playground of the Northwest". It has a rich Native American history and absolutely stunning views. It is one of the last areas you will see before crossing over the Washington border, and sure to leave you in awe!

You're almost there! Now that you have passed through some of the most beautiful states, spend some time in Spokane, or enjoy the scenic mountain passes as you continue your journey to Seattle. Once you've arrived, enjoy all the culture and adventure that Seattle has to offer.

From here, you can enjoy the Pacific Northwest in all its glory! Head west and spend some time on the coast at the Olympic National Forest. This glorious coast cannot be missed! Or head south down the California coast. Wherever you go next, this 35-hour trip was 2,274 miles of pure beauty. Here's the perfect playlist for you to enjoy along the way.

We will be renting a one way automobile.

Our time is flexible as well as our budget.

We would like to drive and see the most we can during our trip.

We do not mind taking detours to catch sights and staying at beautiful lodges/hotels.

Fine lodging and dinning is key for us.

Any and all help in planning this bucket list trip will be more than welcome and appreciated as wll as pointing us in the right directions to companies/websites than can assist us and coordinate travel/lodging/sightseeing/dinning reservations.

Have never visited this whole area before nor have we taken a road trip this big.

What destinations are on your Bucket List? Grand Canyon? California coast? Yellowstone? Salt Lake City?

What do you like to do? Visit art museums? Enjoy winery tastings? Hike to beautiful vistas? Shop? Gamble?

Thank you for your post. We like it all and are totally wide open to get to see the most we can,

The trip/experience is in itself our bucket list wish. What we see during it will be great but have nothing specific in mind as we do noy know any place in the route.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Your going to have to give us at least a when and a maximum timescale. There are endless options of routes given the distance to be covered, and that's before you get down to individual locations.

When might rule some places out, and maximum duration will do the same.

For instance a zig zag could take in plenty of New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington State but not in a fortnight!?

What is your budget

How much time for this trip

There is a ton to see and you can't see it all so you will need to primitive.

When are you doing this? Out west in May a lot of high elevation roads are still closed due to snow.

road trip dallas to seattle

you can either just start driving with a good map and some guidebooks like the ones published by Michelin or AAA and see where the next roads take you or,

you need to do a lot of research to visit items/places that may be on your bucket list

and, time of year does make a big difference. south in the spring is OK but real hot in the summer; going north too early and the roads are closed due to snow.

Here are a few places to consider:

Inn of the Anasazi - Santa Fe

The Broadmoor - Colorado Springs

The Little Nell and the St Regis - Aspen

Amangani - Jackson Hole

The Ranch at Rock Creek - Phillipsburg, MT

Depending on when you go and how long you go here's a route I'd do for my wife and myself (in various forms we've been to all of these places/roads).

google map link: http://goo.gl/maps/poeFY

- I don't particularly care much for the drive from Dallas to NM; but one has to leave TX somehow.

- I love Santa FE & Taos; great sights & great food

- a bit of a detour (so to go over Wolf Pass) on the way to Pagosa Springs (fantastic hot spring resort)

- Durango to Mesa Verde is a great route with: Silverton, Ouray ( great, scenic road and a cool underground hot spring room at the Wiesbaden), Tellurode, and Cortez along the way (Million Dolaar and San Juan Skyway highways)

- Get to mile 13 on hwy 163 for sunrise at Monument Valley then head north to Arches Nat'l Park (Moab)

- next stop is Cody, WY on the east entrance to Yellowstone; head through the park towards Eugene, OR via Boise, ID (or head a little north through the national forests.

- from Eugene head to the coast for a couple days of exploring the Pacific Ocean and then head inland to Portland (don't miss out on dinner at The Beast) and the homestretch to Seattle (get a great burger at Two Bells).
