nicko cruises: VASCO DA GAMA's maiden voyage from Kiel

nicko cruises: VASCO DA GAMA's maiden voyage from Kiel

June 30, 2021 - After the successful debut of the WORLD VOYAGER in the Canary Islands and the Azores, the VASCO DA GAMA, the second ocean-going ship of the established river shipping company, will start its service for German-speaking guests on July 13. The maiden voyage leads from Kiel to Denmark, Sweden and the Estonian Tallinn .

It's still there VASCO DA GAMA in the Lisnave shipyard near Lisbon. During its stay in the shipyard, the ship underwent extensive changes and design upgrades of the public rooms as well as the cabins and suites. In addition, the ship technology was optimized. The former Holland America Line Statendam will soon be leaving the Portuguese shipyard. The classic cruise ship is expected in Kiel on July 12.

VASCO DA GAMA starts on July 13th Kiel for a 15-day Baltic Sea cruise. It leads to Denmark, Sweden and Estonia. Like other shipping companies, nicko cruises is still affected by the closure of individual ports for cruise ships. Above all, the renouncement of the Norwegian ports is significant. However, the shipping company is of the opinion that the program offered in Denmark and Sweden is a good alternative.

On its first trip, the VASCO DA GAMA is two days in Copenhagen . The ship then follows Bornholm . The next day she travels to Visby in Sweden and then to Tallinn / Estonia. From there the journey through the archipelago leads to Stockholm for two days. The next destination is Fredericia in Denmark, followed by Aalborg and Gothenburg in Sweden. Before going back to Kiel, visit VASCO DA GAMA  Skagen , the northernmost city in Denmark.

In view of the corona pandemic, the shipping company has developed a hygiene concept. More about this under WORLD VOYAGER , Cruises under COVID 19 conditions .

  • August 19, 2021

nicko cruises azores

Nicko Cruises has released the full roster of itineraries for the period between September 2021 and October 2022 for its newest ocean vessel, the Vasco Da Gama.

According to a press release, the program includes a total of 32 tour dates on 17 different routes.

The cruise line said that in addition to the classic coastal destinations in Western and Northern Europe, the Baltic region, the Mediterranean and Canary Islands, the program includes more exotic destinations such as the Azores and the Cape Verde Islands.

“Our guests can look forward to a whole series of special highlights in the coming season with the new addition to our fleet – from New Year fireworks on Madeira or oriental culture in Morocco to intensive travel sensations amidst the unspoiled nature of the Azores and the Cape Verde Islands,” said Chief Commercial Officer Guido Laukamp.

“It goes without saying that a tried-and-tested all-round hygiene concept is in place to ensure everyone’s safety,” he added.

Guests onboard the Vasco Da Gama will tour classic West and North European and Baltic coastal destinations, as well as cruising in the Mediterranean and around the Canary Islands with excursions to Madeira and Morocco. They can also experience the Cape Verde Islands and the Azores.

The new journeys can be booked immediately at Nicko Cruises or from travel agents, the cruise line said.

Luxury Cruises to the Azores

Discover the wild landscapes and rugged green coastline of the awe-inspiring island of Sao Miguel on an Azores cruise. A remote archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores are part of Portugal and are a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and those seeking rest and relaxation. The diverse topography of these islands provides plenty of outdoor activities, including whale watching, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Hike through volcanic craters, admire picturesque villages, and visit historical sites by the seaside on your visit to Ponta Delgada and its surroundings.

On an Azores cruise, you'll have the opportunity to explore the quaint cobblestone streets and centuries-old Portuguese plazas of Ponta Delgada. Step into the Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres church to see its ornate, Baroque-style interior, or explore the beautiful Palace of the Governors, which was once the home of wealthy aristocrats. For sweeping views of Ponta Delgada and the Atlantic Ocean, take a cable car ride up to Monte Brasil. Uncover centuries of prized Portuguese culture and rich history on a luxury cruise to the Azores with Celebrity.

Azores Cruise Highlights

Awe-inspiring architecture.

Ponta Delgada's architecture represents many layers of Azorean maritime history and culture through its churches, historic homes, and squares. Walk through the plaza at the iconic Portas da Cidade (City Gates), a symbolic entrance to Ponta Delgada dating back to the 18th century. Explore the Parish Church of Sao Sebastiao with its beautiful tiled exterior, created in the baroque style. Then stroll along Rua de Santa Ana to see some of the oldest homes in Ponta Delgada.

Dramatic Nature

Soak in the Azores’ magnificent landscape at sites like the natural hot springs at Furnas, where you can relax in the therapeutic waters and even try food cooked in the thermal vapors. Hike the Caldeira das Sete Cidades, a volcanic crater that’s home to two lakes—one blue and one green. Pay a visit to the Gorreana Tea Plantation, the only tea farm in Europe, and learn about the tea-making process while enjoying views of the radiant, deep green valley below.

Azorean Culture

Due to their remote Atlantic location, far from mainland Portugal, and history as a stopping point for ships traveling between Europe and the Americas, the islands of the Azores have developed a unique culture. Make sure to try traditional local dishes like Cozido das Furnas, a meat and vegetable dish slow-cooked in the steam of a volcanic crater, and Queijadas da Vila, a cheesecake tart.

Why Choose Nicko Cruises

Wonderful views and a welcoming atmosphere

Every one of our modern river cruise ships has all the facilities and touches you would expect and they all offer outside cabins, meaning you will always have a view of the beautiful scenery outside your window or balcony. In the spacious public areas you will find enough seating to be sociable, or enough space for some time on your own. The deckchairs and awnings of the sundecks offer beautiful views of the water and surroundings, while in the Panoramic Restaurants, we offer culinary delights combined with equally spectacular views. Enjoy outstanding cuisine as we serve you in style at your table with multi-course menus at lunchtime and dinner, along with themed buffets to match your travel route.

The right ship for every taste.

From classic maritime to modern and elegant, the size of your river ship depends on the nautical characteristics of the river you will be cruising. As a matter of principle, every vessel in the nicko fleet is maintained to a high standard, but there are slight differences in facilities and atmosphere depending on the cruising area and technical requirements. Either way, you are still afforded the typical nicko cruises experience.

Luxurious cabins and classic style

Whether you anticipate spending most of your time away from your cabin or you want to enjoy a beautiful view and feel the fresh wind on your face, every nicko river cruise ship has a cabin category to suit your taste. The main deck on almost all our ships is the most reasonably priced cabin category, where amenities, size and therefore comfort are mostly the same as those on the upper decks, although the windows cannot be opened and they are often a little smaller. Alternatively our middle and upper-deck cabins have large panoramic windows that can be opened, floor-to-ceiling French balconies, or even your own private balcony. On selected ships, you may also book a suite. Learn more about our ocean and river fleet.

nicko boutique – providing a grand hotel feeling

Our ships are designed for 50-125 passengers and radiate a distinctive charm. On board you’ll feel as though you are in a large floating Grand Hotel, accompanied by a friendly crew who will quickly make you feel at home. Gold and brass decorations emphasise the beauty of the ships, while restaurants featuring brightly coloured glass ceiling lights, dark wood decorations, stucco ceilings and curved chair backs bring a touch of elegance. Light, panoramic salons provide an inviting space to sit and relax in cosy sofas and armchairs, while on many ships wellness areas are available for relaxing in and the libraries are ready to inspire you.

Mornings – A great start to the day

To ensure you get a healthy start our kitchen prepares an extensive breakfast buffet using only the freshest ingredients. Help yourself to juices, coffee and tea and whatever takes your fancy, while for early risers, many of our ships also offer an early-bird breakfast, with a selection of tasty treats.

Midday – As the mood takes you

A multi-course course lunch is served in the panorama restaurant, or for a lighter lunch enjoy a buffet-style menu in the salon. The decision is yours and you can change as the moods suits each day – it’s entirely up to you. Depending on your daily programme, we also serve delicious cakes from our ship’s patisserie in the panorama salon in the afternoon, these are freshly made on a daily basis.

Evenings. Dining in a festive atmosphere

In the evening we spoil you with sophisticated menus and excellent wines. Of course, you have the choice of fine wines from the respective region and the most popular wine-growing regions worldwide. Our kitchen is happy to take into account any dietary requirements and depending on the evening programme, we also serve a midnight snack. Our fabulous gala dinner is the culinary highlight of your cruise. On this special evening the captain and his crew invite you to a special reception, where they will raise a toast to you and your cruise, after which, your gala dinner will be served.

Off to new shores: Great experiences. Every day.

At the core of every nicko river cruise is an immersive programme of shore excursions, each of which has carefully been chosen to bring the best out of every destination you will be visiting. Your package includes the key excursions for each trip and by adding on optional excursion or by exploring yourself you can design your very own travel experience, turning your cruise into a nature, culture and city holiday that has been tailored especially for you. Perfectly organised and top-quality, our excursions are exciting, entertaining and will give you plenty of lasting memories.

It’s best organised as a package

Our experts have put together the key highlights of each cruise into an attractive package of four excursions that are included in the price of your cruise, but we also offer a range of optional land excursions that can be booked once you’re on board the ship. Our cruise management office will be happy to advise you on this and they will also have plenty of insider tips for your own personal shore leave, should you wish to explore any destination at leisure.

Easy listening

On almost all excursions you will receive state-of-the-art, comfortable Sennheiser audio systems to use for free. The receiver and earphones are as light as a feather and make it possible to choose the distance you want to be from the tour guide without missing valuable information. They are easy to use and you can set the volume yourself. They can also comfortably be used with a hearing aid/device.

Mediterranean

Picturesque islands and different cultures.

A journey through the Mediterranean takes you to the roots of European history. The Phoenicians began maritime trade long before our calendar system was born. The cities of North Africa, such as Casablanca, have been around for a very long time.

The eastern Mediterranean gives you the impressive remnants of the ancient Greeks and the once mighty Romans. Ruined cities such as Ephesus and Knossos are unique examples of ancient history.

If you travel the sea between Europe, Africa and Asia, you also get to trade routes of a special kind – this is the only place you can admire two continents at the same time: on a Bosphorus trip in Istanbul. Or you can experience the unique passage of the Corinth Canal, which cuts short the sea route around the Peleponnes by more than 400 km. Every destination is an event in itself.

World Voyager: the Nicko Cruises’ small unit

The World Voyager is an expedition ship in the Mystic Cruises ’ fleet that currently sails for the German cruise brand Nicko Cruises, a company specialized in river cruises that also offers maritime routes. The ship is part of a fleet of twin sister constructions, some planned for the coming years, with a maximum capacity of 200 passengers and all the characteristics of an expeditionary unit.

The style of cruising is that of a small yacht with all the amenities, informal luxury and lots of attention paid to the comfort of the client, while sailing lesser known routes to discover natural places, landscapes and local wildlife. The size of the ships, just 126 meters in length with 98 staterooms, allows entrance to small ports, providing the thrill of an intimate and reserved ambiance.

The furnishings are very classic, with touches of modernity, and partly combine references to yachts of the past thanks to the use of wood and paintings that recall the navigation of other eras, to very modern environments, such as that of the Reception or the Observation Lounge.

The dining on board the Nicko Cruises ship is based on international cuisine, with a choice of dishes that ranges from Italian to Asian. Although the majority of the World Voyager’s clientele is German, there isn’t a notable regional prevalence, and all kinds of dishes can be tasted.  During the cruise there are sometimes themed menus or special initiatives. For example, an evening filled with delicious specialties completely inspired by Italian cuisine. Another fun occasion is the barbeque night around the pool where all kinds of grilled dishes are served with pleasant musical entertainment.

On deck 5 and 6 are the Infinity Kabines, characterized by a beautiful electronically-controlled window that opens. In this category there are also some cabins dedicated to people with disabilities that are easily accessible. And finally, the Explorer Suite, which is the highest level of room category on board. These suites are located on decks 5 and 6 and offer the sensation of a private apartment on the sea. The size is 44 m2 inside and almost 10 m2 outside, with a large entrance, a living room with a TV, a bedroom, a corridor with a closet that leads to the bathroom which is equipped with double sinks, a bathtub and a separate shower. There is also a large balcony, with two deck chairs and a pair of armchairs with a table.

The World Voyager offers an intimate and familial style of cruising, where it is common place to meet and make friends with the officers on board, with the Captain and with the entire crew. The personnel is at the complete disposal of passengers to make them feel at home during their journey. This friendly style of cruising offers an excellent level of service that is not rigid but rather pleasantly informal.

The World Voyager is a full-fledged expedition ship, albeit not with the maximum ice-class, and is able to offer an expedition cruise style even on routes that are not as extreme as the Arctic or Antarctica. On November 15, 2018, the shipowner Mystic Cruises officially announced the contract with WestSEA Shipyard (Viana do Castelo, Portugal) for building two more vessels. Deliveries were scheduled for 2020 (World Voyager) and 2021 (World Navigator).

All Mystic Invest newbuilds as investments were backed by ICBC Leasing - part of ICBC Ltd (Chinese multinational bank, ranked world's largest by assets, deposits, loans, customers and employees). The shipbuilding financing was supported by Portuguese banks (during construction) and ICBCL Leasing funding (following delivery) through sale and charter-back of the vessel, with an obligation to repurchase it on maturity. Mystic Invest intends to build a 10-ship fleet of the same design.

In August 2017 were completed design's tank tests. The testing water tank and ship model were conducted by the Wageningen-based MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands).

In 2018 (February 20 through March 1), Nicko Tours scheduled a total of 10 roadshows in Germany to promote the company's new "ocean cruising" business. Each of the shows started with a casual get-together and buffet with finger food, followed by a presentation of the vessel and its Nicko cruise itineraries. Then travel agents enjoyed full meals and gourmet desserts.

MS World Voyager cruise ship (Nicko Cruises)

The vessel's first Captain was Michael Wilhelm Block.

In September 2023, AOV announced that World Voyager's godmother would be Harpreet Kaur Chandi/Preet Chandi (1988-born as Harpreet Chandi). She is a physiotherapist and British Army medical officer (Captain since 2016). In 2022, she joined the MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire/1917-established chivalry order). Harpreet Kaur Chandi became famous after completing her 40-day solo expedition in Antarctica (leaving on Nov 7, 2021, from Hercules Inlet/Ronne Ice Shelf) traveling ~ 700 mi/1100 km, pulling a sled carrying 90 kg of cargo (food and supplies for 48 days). In 2022-2023 (November through January) during her second Antarctic expedition she became the first woman to cross Antarctica solo and unsupported, skiing the distance of 868 mi/1397 km between Hercules Inlet and Reedy Glacier.

On November 8th, 2023, was the ship's christening ceremony held dockside in Ushuaia Argentina . The naming event was led by the godmother (Chandi) and attended by James A. Rodriguez (AOV's President and CEO), the ship's Master (Captain Terje Ulset), local officials (including Monica Susana Urquiza/Vice Governor of Tierra del Fuego Province since 2019), AOV shareholders, travel agents and media representatives as well as by all the passengers on the inaugural sailing. After the ceremony started the 9-day Maiden Voyage (Antarctic Discovery itinerary).

World Voyager ship technology

The ship design is based on a Rolls-Royce expedition vessel platform developed by Giuseppe Tringali (Italian naval architect). It features an ice-strengthened hull (ice class 1B), top-notch automation and control system, modern propulsion (based on electrical pods / 360-degree azimuthing thrusters), dynamic positioning system (using GPS data to accurately maintain ship's position without anchoring), advanced water treatment system, hybrid powerplant (diesel-electric) with efficient marine engines (two Rolls-Royce engines running on ULSD / ultra-low-sulfur diesel).

The Rolls-Royce powerplant costs GBP 7 million (EUR 7,75 million / 8,9 million) and includes two main engines (Bergen C25-33L8P) and one auxiliary dual-fuel genset (Bergen C25-33L6P). The engines are connected to the ship's electric power system (Rolls-Royce SAVe CUBE) allowing them to operate efficiently at variable speeds. Rolls-Royce Promas propulsion is an integrated propeller-rudder system to optimize hydrodynamic efficiency. Promas include two controllable pitch propellers integrated with two flap rudders, steering gears and tunnel thrusters.

Mystic Cruises ship

World Voyager is a cruise ship with hydro-jet propulsion (technology initially developed for military vessels). The ship is fitted with two SPJ Pump Jets by SCHOTTEL (model SPJ 82, total power output 670 kW) allowing silent navigation at 5 knots speed (9 kph). This is an alternative propulsion system as the hydrojets are used only in destinations with specific marine life. Both hydrojets pump water to propel the ship and similarly to the in-hull mounted Azipods (underwater azimuthing thrusters) can rotate 360 degrees. They also allow dynamic positioning (via GPS) to stabilize/fix the vessel without using propellers or anchors.

The vessel's draft is only 15 ft (4,7 m) allowing access to remote islands and unique coastal destinations. The ship has all 2 lifeboats (full-capacity) which are fully enclosed. Ship-to-shore communications are via Inmarsat Capsat Fleet 77 (satellite phone and Internet). Landings (passenger transportation) and coastal exploration voyages are served by the ship's own fleet of ten Zodiacs (motorized boats stored aft on Deck 7) and 2 loading stations.

The shipbuilder WestSEA ( Viana do Castelo, Portugal ) is owned by Martifer Group via the subsidiary Martifer SGPS. This is a family-owned holding company founded in 1990 (by the brothers Carlos and Jorge Martins), headquartered in Oliveira de Frades (Portugal) and Euronext Lisbon (stock exchange) listed since 2007. Martifer Group has over 3000 employees and specializes in metal construction and (since 2004) in renewable energy (wind and solar energy equipment production). Martifer Group is one of Europe's largest metal construction companies, with subsidiaries in Spain, Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Brazil and Angola.
