Passport DC presented by Events DC is a month-long festival in May that pays tribute to Washington, DC's thriving international diplomatic community and diverse culture. As part of International Cultural Awareness month, the first two Saturdays in May are devoted to embassy open houses. Consider this your chance to stroll Embassy Row – a stretch of Massachusetts Avenue NW that runs through Dupont Circle and Upper Northwest – and visit some of the more than 170 embassies and cultural institutions based in the nation's capital.

Thanks to this only-in-DC experience, you can take advantage of two chances to step inside a foreign embassy with the  Around the World Embassy Tour  (May 4, 2024) and the EU Open House (May 11, 2024). Read on to learn about these events plus all of Passport DC's other ongoing experiences, including International City Food Festival (May 3-4, 2024), Flower Mart (May 3-4, 2024), and Fiesta Asia! (May 18, 2024).

On May 3-4, the second annual International City Food Festival will include three days of celebrations complementing the first weekend of Passport DC, making culinary diplomacy accessible — with free admission — to all ages through global food and drink. The festival will offer a timely launch point to travel the globe to understand and honor other cultures, all in the heart of DC.

Also during Passport DC’s first weekend, the Washington National Cathedral hosts its annual Flower Mart , a two-day event that allows visitors to shop for plants and gifts, eat fun festival food, enjoy children’s activities, ride a historic carousel and take in the beauty of the International Floral Exhibit.

Later in May, you can embrace Asian Heritage Month with a day jam-packed with culture, from the performing arts to culinary delights. On May 18, the annual Fiesta Asia! takes over Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd and 6th streets NW with exciting performances, interactive displays, flea markets and food stalls.

Both of Passport DC’s embassy open house experiences are FREE!

Like so much of Washington, DC , this unique event is free to the public. If this pumps you up as much as it does us, then express gratitude to your hosts. Surprise them by learning to say "thank you" in their native tongue before you move to the next embassy.

This is the only opportunity of its kind, when embassies are open to the public.

You can sip on everything from international coffee to spirits.

Washington, DC, March 15, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- This May, Passport DC returns to Washington, DC with one of its favorite programs—Around the World Embassy Tour. How to make the most of Passport DC’s free embassy tours

Dozens of countries from Armenia to Zambia are hosting open houses Saturday during the annual Around the World Embassy Tour , one of those “only in Washington” events you’ll tell friends and relatives about. How often do you get invited into an embassy to explore its art collection, sample traditional cuisine, and watch free music and dance performances, let alone play cornhole in the Norwegian Embassy’s garden? Here’s a guide to planning for a successful day of globe-trotting without leaving D.C. Also, many of these tips are just as helpful on May 11, when the European Union hosts its annual E.U. Open House embassy tours.

  • Because the event is popular, lines are common, and they get longer at some of the better-known locations, such as the Korean Cultural Center at the South Korean Embassy, or the embassies of the United Kingdom, Jamaica and Thailand. If there’s a particular embassy you must visit, get there before doors open at 10 a.m. to improve your chances of getting in.
  • If you’re trying to visit a variety of embassies, pick a particular neighborhood to explore — maybe Massachusetts Avenue near Scott Circle, the string of embassies on Massachusetts northwest of Sheridan Circle, or the embassies dotted among the streets of Kalorama — and research the participants within a few blocks. That way, if you get tired of waiting outside one embassy, you can head to another, preferably smaller, destination nearby. Also, as veteran Around the World-ers will tell you, the embassies clustered around International Drive and International Court in Van Ness — China, Bangladesh, Egypt, etc. — are closer together and can be easier to get into than the ones on Embassy Row.
  • You don’t even have to go indoors to get a taste of a country: Some embassies offer outdoor live music, dance performances or, in the case of China, lion dances to entertain the crowds waiting to enter their buildings.
  • If you go to a busy neighborhood, try starting at the embassies that are farthest from the Metro station — people have a tendency to stop and get in line at the first embassy they pass. Walk past them, then work your way back.
  • For serious explorers, this is a good weekend to skip brunch. Participating embassies and cultural centers are open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and lines get longer as the day goes on. An early start will help you make it to the most locations — getting to five or six is a solid day of sightseeing.
  • Even if you plan well, you might be able to avoid lines at only a handful of embassies. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a phone charger and a book, just in case.
  • Carry cash or a credit card. While many embassies offer free samples of food or drinks, some also charge. Last year, the Embassy of Barbados handed out free sweets and had a chef preparing traditional Barbadian dishes as a teaser for the upcoming Barbados Food and Rum Festival. Everyone sitting on a chair in the embassy’s front garden watching the cooking demo got a two-bite hors d’oeuvre. But in the parking lot behind the embassy, there was a party raging: The ambassador was hanging out next to a DJ spinning upbeat carnival songs; a bar served potent rum punches ($6 each) and beer ($4); and a team of cooks was dishing up flying fish with rice and beans, oxtail platters, barbecued pig tails, and macaroni pie (main dishes $15-$35 with sides, smaller plates $1-$10). While the Barbados Association of Washington did have a credit card reader, that’s not true of every embassy we’ve been to.
  • Some embassies have marketplaces with art or textiles from native artisans. The Embassy of Kenya transformed the forecourt of its building into a showcase of baskets, clothing and jewelry; Ukraine House, the Ukrainian cultural center, had traditional Ukrainian fashions, nesting dolls and accessories for sale on tables in its garden.
  • Related: Even if you don’t plan on buying anything, grab the first free tote bag you see, because you’ll pick up plenty of tchotchkes, pamphlets and other gifts throughout the day.
  • Don’t be shy about asking what you’re in line for. The Dominican Republic hosted a veritable street party last year, with a DJ on its front porch and people dancing in the road. Depending on which way you approached the building, though, there were two very different lines: One was to access the indoor embassy tour, and the other was to purchase food and a rum tasting. You don’t want to get to the front of the line to find out you’ve spent 20 minutes waiting for the wrong thing.
  • Bigger isn’t always better. Some of the more popular embassies can be so crowded that you don’t really feel like you’re learning anything about the country. At an off-the-beaten-path embassy, such as the Embassy of Gabon, you have a better chance of getting face time with a staffer who can talk about the cultural uses of elaborate masks on display, or explain how national parks cover more than 10 percent of the country. (That’s about three times the percentage in the United States.)

The Around the World Embassy Tour is part of the month-long Passport DC program, and souvenir passports are available from booths near the Dupont Circle and Van Ness Metro stations; at the Mexican Cultural Institute ; and at the International City Food Festival , held at the Square food hall. Visitors can collect stamps while visiting embassies and cultural centers, though there’s no reward for filling the book.

Where is Embassy Row?

The street that Embassy Row is on is a section of Massachusetts Avenue NW, just to the northwest of Dupont Circle.

Embassy Row usually refers to Massachusetts Ave NW between Dupont Circle and Observatory Circle, around the 20th St NW to 37th St NW.

Not every embassy is on Embassy Row and not every building here is an embassy! But a majority of the 170+ embassies in DC are located in this neighborhood.

Embassy Row

Can you Walk Embassy Row in DC?

Absolutely! Embassy Row is just a street like any other in the city that you can drive down or walk along the sidewalk. It's the view and the stories behind the buildings that make it special.

The best way to walk along Embassy Row is with us on a walking tour!

The closest Metro Station to Embassy Row is the Dupont Circle station (red line).

There are two entrances:

  • South: on the circle and 19th St NW
  • North: 20th and Q St NW

From either station exit, you can see Dupont Circle and we recommend starting from there and taking Massachusetts Ave NW to the north.

You can also reach Dupont Circle on the Circulator Bus. The Dupont-Georgetown-Rosslyn route starts/ends at 19th St & N St NW just south of the circle.

Embassy Row is located just outside of the original city plan drawn up by Pierre L’Enfant.

As the city expanded, DC’s well-heeled sought to create a fashionable neighborhood and populated it with magnificent Beaux arts mansions and townhouses.

This section of Massachusetts Avenue NW was originally called Millionaires Row after the nouveau riche began to build 60 room mansions on (what was then) the outskirts of Washington, DC.

In time, these beautiful structures would attract foreign embassies who helped revive and retain the cultural and social fabric of the area.

Join DC by Foot on this entertaining and enlightening Embassy Row Highlights Tour and learn all about the people and forces that have turned this district into one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the city and the center of the foreign diplomatic community.

Wealth, power, intrigue, scandals, curses, and political assassination fill the stories on this tour.

Take a walk around the world and see the international side of the nation's capital city.

The Embassies in Washington DC (those on Embassy Row and in other parts of the city) are working government buildings.

For this reason, you aren't usually able to walk in as a tourist!

Some embassies have small cultural exhibits in the front lobby (like Côte D'Ivoire!) but unless you have an appointment for consular services or a scheduled tour, you won't usually be able to make it farther than that.

You are always welcome to contact an Embassy to ask for a tour of the building. Many Embassies are happy to do this for school groups, but it doesn't hurt to ask as an individual traveler either.

No matter what time of year you're visiting you may be able to schedule a visit to an embassy in DC.

However, if you're here in May, you may wish to check out Passport DC for Embassy Open Houses.

How endometrial cancer is being treated using molecular profiling

This content is provided by MedStar Washington Hospital Center .

Endometrial cancer, also known as uterine cancer, accounts for seven percent of all cancers in women, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in the U.S., and the NCI estimated there will be just under 70,000 new cases of endometrial cancer diagnosis this year, which will lead to over 13,000 deaths.

Endometrial cancer starts in the lining of the uterus, with the most common symptoms being vaginal bleeds or discharge unrelated to the menstrual cycle. Pelvis pain and abnormal findings on imaging are other possible indicators.

The sooner the cancer is identified, the better the chances of survival. When caught early, doctors can treat it with surgery. Most patients will treat the cancer by having the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tube surgically removed. Often, radiation therapy or chemotherapy is needed to get rid of any remaining cancer cells in advanced stages of cancer or aggressive tumor types.

For individuals facing advanced endometrial cancer or those who see it return after treatment, new guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) highlight other treatment options, like immunotherapy and molecular profiling.

Dr. Ebony Hoskins , a board-certified gynecologic oncologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said data showed combining immunotherapy with chemotherapy had improved progression-free survival.

“As of the spring, we’ve been incorporating immunotherapy with chemotherapy in patients with advanced endometrial cancer,” she said.

Immunotherapy uses the body’s own natural defenses to kill cancer cells.

All methods involve using the patient’s immune system to identify and fight the cancer, although there are many ways to approach it.

With molecular profiling, also known as biomarker testing, patients take part in genetic screening of the cancer and doctors look for biomarkers existing within the cells of the tumors to see if it is likely to respond to a specific, targeted treatment.

Biomarkers are abnormal proteins, cellular materials, or genes and chromosomes found in cancer cells and the surrounding tissues. Biomarkers of four types of endometrial cancer have been identified by researchers and each has a unique way of responding to treatment.

“So you’re looking for proteins that exist within the cells of those tumors to see if there’s something you can target with therapy.”

This kind of personalized treatment is recommended for all patients with endometrial cancer because it allows for targeted treatments to slow tumor growth.

Additionally, MedStar Washington Hospital Center is participating in two clinical trials to learn more about treatment options for patients with recurrent endometrial cancer. Dr. Hoskins also highlighted the importance of diversifying the demographics of patients participating in clinical trials geared towards endometrial cancer.

Cases of endometrial cancer have been increasing more rapidly among Black women than other ethnic groups in the country, according to the National Library of Medicine . Black women are also twice as likely as women of other groups to die from it. However, Black and Hispanic patients have been underrepresented in landmark clinical trials.

Dr. Hoskins said studies can help providers answer if there are other “cutting-edge” treatments they can offer patients to improve symptoms and survival rates.

“Collectively, we need to know this information – particularly in women of color – for trial enrollment because that patient population has been significantly less than what the actual general population is,” she said.

Dr. Hoskins said doctors are working to learn more through trials so they can offer standard care provided not just locally, but also nationally, with the hope of improving survival rates of patients.

“There’s so much cutting-edge data coming out from clinical trials, nationally and internationally, which is good for our patients,” Dr. Hoskins said.

embassy tours washington dc 2023

(Editor’s note: The threat of rain on Saturday has led to the postponement of some events, including the Running of the Chihuahuas at the Wharf. Check websites or social media before making plans.)

Flower Mart at Washington National Cathedral

You don’t have to be a gardener to enjoy Flower Mart, the largest annual fundraiser for Washington National Cathedral’s gardens and grounds. This spring tradition, dating back to 1939, includes free entertainment from musicians, dance troupes and choral groups; activities for children, including carnival rides and an antique carousel; treasure hunting at the White Elephant Tent; food stalls offering lobster rolls and funnel cakes; floral displays created by embassies in the cathedral’s nave; and a chance to climb to the top of the cathedral’s towers. The front lawn is set up as a Flower District with vendors selling plants, herbs, bonsai, orchids, cut blooms and flower arrangements. Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free entry, with charges for games, rides and the tower climb.

Star Wars Day celebrations

The unofficial Star Wars holiday of May Fourth brings events across the district — the largest being Star Wars Weekend at Barracks Row . It consists of two days of franchise-themed parties, drink and food specials, and entertainment from participating establishments, plus a Jedi lightsaber parade. Costumes are encouraged ( Friday and Saturday; free ). Also on Friday, AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center kicks off screenings of the original trilogy ( times vary, through May 9; $10-$13 ).

Additionally, recently renovated Stead Park , located on P Street NW between 16th and 17th streets, hosts its grand reopening party with a day of “activities that will help you become a Jedi.” Look for space-themed games and story times for kids, out-of-this-world temporary tattoos, lightsabers created by a balloon artist, live music, and food from local restaurants. ( Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free. )

Around the World Embassy Tours

Dozens of countries from Albania to Zambia host open houses during the annual Around the World Embassy Tour, one of those “only in Washington” events you’ll tell friends and relatives about. How often do you have the chance to tour the British ambassador’s residence and the embassy’s gardens, watch a K-pop performance at the Korean Cultural Center, sample rum at the Embassy of Guyana, listen to Indigenous music at the Australian Embassy or enjoy traditional cuisine at the Embassy of Thailand? It’s a busy day, so start planning now, and read our tips on how to make the most of the festivities. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free; some embassies may charge for food and drinks.

Anacostia River Festival

The final event of the National Cherry Blossom Festival — no, really — fills Anacostia Park with music and activities. Entertainment comes from go-go titans Junkyard Band, R&B singer Adamare, the U.S. Navy Band and the Anacostia High School Band. Learn how to fish with the D.C. Department of Energy and Environment, play lawn games, browse art exhibitions, or volunteer to help clean the park and the river. The 11th Street Bridge Park sponsors a Southeast Market with local vendors including fashion by the Museum and beauty products from Black Bella Spa. Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. for main activities; market until 6 p.m. Free .

Build Day at the Hirshhorn Museum

Kids 12 and younger are invited to the Hirshhorn Plaza for a midday, hands-on exploration of building and design. Budding architects can tour a city design exhibition featuring artwork by DCPS elementary students, make LED sculptures, see student-made 3D-printed building reproductions from George Washington University’s Fab Lab, and construct 3D structures from blocks, bricks and more at maker stations. Stroller parking will be available in the lobby and lower level. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free.
