General Information on ESTA

What is the electronic system for travel authorization.

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an automated system that assists in determining eligibility to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and whether such travel poses any law enforcement or security risk. Upon completion of an ESTA application, a traveler is notified of his or her eligibility to travel to the United States under the VWP.

Is an ESTA a visa?

No. An approved ESTA is not a visa. It does not meet the legal or regulatory requirements to serve in lieu of a U.S. visa when a visa is required under U.S. law. Individuals who possess a valid visa will still be able to travel to the United States on that visa for the purpose for which it was issued. Individuals traveling on valid visas are not required to apply for ESTA.

ESTA and Data Privacy

How does the u.s. government protect the privacy of esta data and who has access to it.

Information submitted by applicants through the ESTA website is subject to the same strict privacy provisions and controls that have been established for similar traveler screening programs. Access to such information is limited to those with a professional need to know. The website is operated by the U.S. government and employs technology to prevent unauthorized access to the information entered and viewed. Information is protected and governed by U.S. laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Federal Information Security Management Act.

Does DHS use application data for any purpose other than determining eligibility for an ESTA?

DHS uses the application data to screen the individual before granting authorization to travel to the United States under the VWP. As part of this screening process, information that identifies suspected or known violators of the law and other persons of concern will be provided to the appropriate law enforcement, national security and/or counterterrorism agency.

Who Needs to Apply for ESTA

Who is required to apply for esta.

All eligible nationals or citizens of VWP countries who plan to travel to the United States for temporary business or pleasure under VWP are required to receive an authorization through ESTA prior to boarding a U.S.-bound airplane or vessel. The term "United States" refers to the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands of the United States, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Accompanied and unaccompanied children, regardless of age, are also required to obtain an independent ESTA approval. A third party, such as a relative or travel agent, is permitted to submit an ESTA application on behalf of a VWP traveler.

Do nationals or citizens of countries that participate in the VWP require an ESTA if they are only transiting the United States en route to another country?

Yes. Eligible nationals or citizens of countries that participate in the VWP require either an ESTA or a visa to transit the United States. If a traveler is only planning to transit through the United States en route to another country, when he or she completes the ESTA application, the traveler should enter the words "In Transit" and his or her final destination in the address lines under the heading “Address While In The United States.”

ESTA Implementation Timeline

When can a traveler apply for travel authorization via esta.

At anytime, but preferably as soon as a VWP traveler begins to plan a trip to visit the United States. Travelers may file ESTA applications through the ESTA website.

What happens if a VWP participant travels to the United States after ESTA is mandatory, but somehow does not have an ESTA?

VWP travelers who have not received an ESTA approval may be denied boarding, experience delayed processing, or be denied admission at a U.S. port of entry.

Do VWP travelers arriving in the United States from a non-VWP country need an ESTA?

All VWP travelers arriving by U.S.-bound airplane or vessel, regardless of their country of origination or port of embarkation, require an approved ESTA.

How to Apply for an ESTA

Can a vwp traveler with more than one passport travel to the united states on the passport that was not used when applying for an esta.

No. Each VWP traveler must have an approved ESTA for the passport he or she plans to use for travel to the United States. If travelers acquire a new passport, they must submit a new ESTA application for their new passport.

I have seen other websites that are assisting travelers in applying for their ESTA application. Is there a benefit to using one of these other sites?

No. Use of a private service to apply for travel authorization via ESTA will not expedite approval. Third party websites that provide information about ESTA submit ESTA applications for VWP travelers are not endorsed by, associated with, or affiliated in any way with DHS or the U.S. government.

What information is needed in order to complete the ESTA application?

The traveler must provide, in English, biographical data including name, birth date and passport information. The traveler also must answer VWP eligibility questions regarding communicable diseases, arrests and convictions for certain crimes, past history of visa revocation or deportation and other questions. The traveler will also need their credit card information to pay the associated fees in order to complete the ESTA application.

Do VWP travelers need to bring a paper printout of their ESTA approval to the airport?

No. DHS communicates a traveler’s ESTA status to the carriers. However, DHS recommends that travelers print out the ESTA application response as a record of their ESTA application number to confirm their ESTA status.

Updating Your ESTA

Does a traveler ever need to reapply for travel authorization through esta.

Yes, a new travel authorization via ESTA is required when: (1) the traveler is issued a new passport; (2) the traveler changes his or her name; (3) the traveler changes his or her gender; (4) the traveler’s country of citizenship changes; or (5) the circumstances underlying the traveler’s previous responses to any of the ESTA application questions requiring a “yes” or “no” response have changed.

ESTA approvals are typically granted for a two–year period or until the applicant’s passport expires, whichever is sooner. ESTA provides validity dates upon approval of the application. Therefore, a traveler must apply for a new ESTA when the prior ESTA approval or passport expires. The associated fee will be charged for each new application submitted.

What should a traveler do if the information in his or her passport has changed?

If a traveler’s passport information changes, the individual is required to apply for a new travel authorization through ESTA. A new travel authorization is required if (1) the traveler is issued a new passport; (2) the traveler changes his or her name; (3) the traveler changes his or her gender; (4) the traveler’s country of citizenship changes; or (5) the circumstances underlying the traveler’s previous responses to any of the ESTA application questions requiring a “yes” or “no” response have changed. The associated fee will be charged for each new application submitted.

How can I see the data I entered? Can I print out the information I entered?

The ESTA website will prompt applicants to review the data submitted for the overall application prior to submission. The applicant will be able to print out the entire application and their ESTA status upon completion of the application. Once the browser is closed, the applicant will only be able to print out their ESTA status by retrieving their application. It will not be possible to print the entire application once the browser is closed. DHS recommends that travelers print out the ESTA application response to record their ESTA application number and to confirm their ESTA status.

ESTA Denials

What should a traveler do if he or she is not approved for travel through esta.

If an ESTA application is denied and the traveler wishes to continue with the trip, the traveler will be required to apply for a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Visit the  State Department  website for more about visa application procedures.

How can a traveler find out the reason an ESTA application was denied?

DHS has carefully developed the ESTA program to ensure that only those individuals who are ineligible to travel to the United States under the VWP or those whose travel would pose a law enforcement or security risk are refused an ESTA. While the ESTA website provides a link to the DHS Travel Redress Inquiry Program (TRIP) website, there are no guarantees that a request for redress through DHS TRIP will resolve the VWP ineligibility that caused an applicant’s ESTA application to be denied.

U.S. Embassies and Consulates are not able to provide details about ESTA denials or resolve the issue that caused the ESTA denial. Embassies and Consulates will process an application for a non-immigrant visa, which, if approved, will be the only way that a traveler whose ESTA application has been denied would be authorized to travel to the U.S.

Do I need to apply for ESTA if...?

I am a citizen (adult or minor) of a vwp country visiting the u.s., if i have a current, valid visa.

Individuals who possess a valid visa will still be able to travel to the United States on that visa for the purpose for which it was issued. Individuals traveling on valid visas are not required to apply for an ESTA authorization.

What to know about the US ESTA 'visa' — when to get it, how to apply and how much it costs

Jordan Waller

If you're traveling to the U.S. any time soon and you're a citizen of the United Kingdom or Europe, it's quite likely that you'll need to apply for an ESTA before you visit.

Short for Electronic System for Travel Authorization, applying for an ESTA might seem daunting if you've never done it before. Don't worry — we have you covered.

Below we break down everything you need to know about applying for an ESTA, from how much it will cost and approval times to when you should renew it and when you need to consider applying for one.

Related: What to know about the ETIAS 'visa' — when to get it, how to apply and how much it will cost

What is the ESTA 'visa'?

An ESTA is an automated part of the Visa Waiver Program that allows visitors from specific countries to visit the U.S. Visitors must be citizens of countries classed as part of the U.S. visa waiver list to be eligible for an ESTA application. Currently, 40 countries are included on the list, including the U.K. and much of Europe.

ESTA holders can visit the U.S. for a period of 90 days or less without the need to apply for a standard visa if their visit is either a vacation or a business trip.

ESTA was initially rolled out by the U.S. in 2008 to allow the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Borders Protection to use authorized databases to pre-screen visitors to the country. It also allows the easier identification of terrorists, criminals and banned flyers, and is designed to help prevent such people from entering the country. It can also help identify those who may be a risk for overstaying their visits.

Is an ESTA a visa?

No, an ESTA is not a traditional visa and instead is classed as a visa waiver. As such, the application process is much more straightforward than applying for a traditional visa, and eligible travelers can do so by filling out a short online application on ESTA's official website.

The form requires applicants to share basic personal information, travel history and other simple security questions. Applications are usually processed within 72 hours.

Who needs to apply for an ESTA?

esta application travel dates

You'll need to apply for an ESTA if you are a citizen of a country classed as part of the U.S. visa waiver program, which includes the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, among others. You can view the full list of the 40 eligible countries on the DHS website .

If you are visiting the U.S. from one of these countries as part of a vacation or business trip that is set to last for 90 days or less — and you are arriving by either plane or cruise ship — you can apply for an ESTA.

If you already hold a visa for visiting the U.S., you do not need to also apply for an ESTA. Additionally, if you are only briefly stopping in the U.S. to catch a connecting flight or ship before moving on to your final destination, know that you will still be required to apply for an ESTA, regardless of how brief your stay is.

How much does an ESTA cost?

esta application travel dates

The ESTA application fee is $21; you can pay this fee online after filling out your application form. The fee was increased from $14 in May 2023, and its current pricing will remain in effect until September 2027.

Valid payment methods include:

  • American Express
  • Discover (JCB or Diners Club only)

Your application will not be submitted for approval until your payment has been received.

How do you apply for an ESTA?

esta application travel dates

You can only apply for an ESTA online. Find the official site here .

You will be asked to accept various terms and upload an image of your passport during your application. After uploading an image of your passport, you will also be asked to share your passport information, valid email address and other standard personal details, along with information regarding your upcoming and previous travel history.

If applicable, you may also be required to share details about your employment; aliases or other names; a national ID or personal ID number; your Global Entry, Nexus or Sentri ID number; and the name, addresses or phone number for any U.S. points of contact.

When do I need to apply for an ESTA?

Your ESTA application can be submitted at any time before you travel to the U.S. However, the DHS advises you to apply at least 72 hours before travel to allow time for processing ahead of departure.

How long does an ESTA application take to be approved?

In TPG's experience, an ESTA application can often be approved on the same day you apply, though it can sometimes take up to 72 hours to be processed. We recommend applying at least a week or two before traveling to allow time for the application to be approved.

How long is an ESTA valid for, and will I need to apply for each trip to the US?

Once approved, your ESTA will be valid for two years from the date it was authorized or until the date your passport expires — depending on which comes first. You will not be required to apply for a new ESTA for each subsequent visit to the U.S. as long as any trips fall within the two-year validity period.

If you acquire a new passport or change your name, sex or citizenship after having your ESTA approved, you must submit a new application for approval.

How can I check my ESTA status?

esta application travel dates

If you have applied for an ESTA and want to check its status, you can do so by visiting the ESTA website and selecting "Check ESTA Status."

If you are checking your own application, click "Check Individual Status." You will then be asked to supply either your passport number, date of birth and application number or your country of citizenship and passport issue and expiration dates.

To check the status of a group application, click "Check Group Status." From here, you will be asked to supply your group ID, family name, first (given) name, email and date of birth of your group's point of contact.

You will then be able to see the current status of your ESTA, which will fall into one of three categories:

  • Authorization Approved — meaning your application was successful, and you are authorized to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program
  • Travel Not Authorized — meaning your application was unsuccessful, and you're not authorized to travel to the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program
  • Authorization Pending — Your travel authorization is still under review and should usually be determined within 72 hours

Note that while in most cases you will be fine entering the U.S. once your application is approved, having an ESTA alone does not guarantee admission. Your final entry will be at the discretion of the CBP officer at your destination.

Bottom line

If you are traveling to the U.S. from the U.K. or other countries eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for an ESTA at least 72 hours before your departure if you are not already approved.

Your ESTA will cost $21 and will be valid for two years from its authorization date. If you already have an ESTA, it's wise to check its status before any trips to the U.S. to ensure it's still valid.

  • When you need to enter the US for tourism:  You may need to visit the US for the Strip if you're a gambler. The allures of New York might interest you so much that you want to see things for yourself.
  •  You could come for a  firsthand view of the Silicon Valley if you're the techy type.
  • When you need to pass through the US:  You may be heading to a separate destination but need to stop briefly in the US. Maybe to change flight or break your trip. For that to happen, you’ll need an ESTA online visa. It’s a form of  transit visa that allows you to spend a few hours in the US  before heading to your original destination.

Applying on the same day you want to travel: Is it possible?

Is an esta application always a 72-hour response period thing, what happens if my esta is denied a few days to my travel date, esta status check: verifying the validity of your esta authorization, use the esta status check feature..

  • ESTA Authorization Approved – This  tells you that you have a valid ESTA authorization, which you can use to enter the US.
  • Application Pending  – This tells you that the ESTA officials are running a series of background checks on you.
  • ESTA Application Expired  – This tells you that your ESTA UK is no longer valid and that you need to submit another application before traveling.
  • Application Not Found –  You get this response when you input wrong details on the site.

We are travelling to New York in April for a week's holiday. We are a family of four and have obtained ESTAs for all of us - ESTA confirmed for each of us. Since obtaining the ESTA my wife has decided to attend a family wedding to the States (CA) in March with one of my daughters, I can't travel in March due to work commitments but we will all travel again to the States (NY) in April for the family holiday. My question is that do I need to obtain another ESTA for both my wife and daughter for their trip in March? When I applied for the original ESTA ( NY trip in April) I gave the dates of travel in April and the ESTAs are valid for 2 years from April.

I have contacted the CBP about my wife and daughter travelling in March and they advised that another ESTA is NOT necessary. I was wondering if anyone has come across a situation when you travel during dates prior to the dates confirmed on the ESTA application or are the ESTAs valid from date of authorisation?

Btw I have completed a consent letter for my wife to travel with my daughter notarised by a registered UK Notary public.

' class=

An Esta is valid for 2 years from the date of authorisation. If the CBP told you it's ok why are you asking random strangers on the internet instead of believing them?

esta application travel dates

In any case, it seems the U.S. authorities have already told you your wife and daughter can use their ESTAs in March, and they are the experts. Plus, the CBP website explicitly states that ESTA is valid for 2 years from the date of approval (e.g. Dec 2016), and not 2 years from the date on which you originally said you intended to use them (April 2017): https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/1126/~/esta---length-of-approval

I love that folk would sooner get advice from any random contributor to this forum than from the horse's mouth.

If you had looked at the CBP website, the application form or even the specific ESTA topic on this forum, you would have found your answer. The dates are irrelevant as long as you have a valid ESTA.

Did you even read the email(s) you got confirming the ESTAs? It tells you they are valid - from the date of the email. And they will expire 2 years to the day before that email was sent! Actual travel dates are irrelevant. And while we're at it, so are any hotel/accommodation info you supplied, if you did.

We are hardly random. ;-)

I love that people come on here to get reassurance from those who may have actual experience and the usual suspects retort with "are you an idiot?" responses.

<<I love that people come on here to get reassurance from those who may have actual experience >>

Why would they come on here and ask in the first place when they've already been told by the CBP that their Estas are ok? Do they think posters on TA know more than the CBP do?

Read my post, I answered your first question with my original post... I have no way of knowing the answer to your 2nd question.

Come on people be nice!!

Some folks don't understand that although the ESTA asks for dates of travel when you apply , those dates don't really matter and you can travel at any time within the 2 years for which it is good!!

Thank you Riff M for being reasonable.

Thank you guys for the info. I had a fair idea of the answer and as this will be our first visit to the States I wanted to clarify with views from my fellow seasoned travellers.

  • VWP Country Eligibility: Check if your country is part of the Visa Waiver Program. Citizens of VWP countries are eligible to apply for ESTA.
  • Travel Purpose: Confirm that your trip is for business, pleasure, or transit purposes. The ESTA is not suitable for individuals planning to work or study in the U.S.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – ESTA Application Process

What is esta, and who needs to apply for it.

ESTA stands for Electronic System for Travel Authorization. It is an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Travelers from VWP countries planning to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days for business or pleasure must apply for ESTA.

How is ESTA different from a visa?

ESTA is not a visa but a pre-screening process. It allows eligible travelers to enter the U.S. without obtaining a traditional visa for short stays. While a visa allows for longer visits and different purposes, ESTA is specifically for VWP travelers with stays up to 90 days.

Which countries are eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)?

Citizens of countries participating in the VWP, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and many others, are eligible to apply for ESTA. The list of VWP countries is subject to change, so it’s advisable to check the official ESTA website for the most up-to-date information.

How do I apply for ESTA, and what information is required?

To apply for ESTA, visit the official ESTA website and complete the online application form. You’ll need to provide personal information, passport details, travel itinerary, and answer a series of eligibility questions. It’s crucial to ensure all information is accurate and matches your travel documents.

When should I apply for ESTA?

It’s recommended to apply for ESTA at least 72 hours before your departure. While many applications are processed instantly, allowing for a buffer ensures you have ample time to address any issues or delays.

How long is the ESTA approval valid, and can I use it for multiple trips?

ESTA approval is generally valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During this period, you can use the same ESTA for multiple trips to the U.S., as long as each stay is within the 90-day limit.

What happens if my ESTA application is denied?

If your ESTA application is denied, you may still apply for a U.S. visa through the traditional visa application process at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country. The denial of an ESTA application does not automatically prohibit travel to the U.S.

Can I edit my ESTA application after submission?

No, you cannot edit your ESTA application once it’s submitted. It’s crucial to review all information carefully before submission. If there are errors or changes, you may need to reapply with the correct information.

Is ESTA mandatory for children and infants?

Yes, every traveler, regardless of age, must have an approved ESTA to enter the U.S. This includes infants and children traveling on their parents’ passports.

How can I check the status of my ESTA application?

You can check the status of your ESTA application on the official ESTA website. Use the “Check Existing Application” option and enter your application number, passport number, and birth date for verification.

ESTA , or Electronic System for Travel Authorization , is a program run by the US government that allows citizens of certain countries to travel to the US for short stays without a visa.

The validity of ESTA depends on factors such as the traveler’s passport expiration date and the length of the intended stay in the US. Generally, ESTA is valid for a maximum of two years or until the passport expires. It is important to note that ESTA does not grant entry into the US , and travelers must still undergo inspection by Customs and Border Protection officers.

Factors that can affect ESTA validity include travel history, criminal history, immigration status, and travel plans. To apply for an ESTA , travelers can complete an online application form and pay a fee. It is necessary to enroll in the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) program before traveling to the US. The ESTA is valid for two years or until the passport expires and can be used for multiple trips .

If the ESTA is denied or if a traveler wants to stay longer than 90 days, they may need to apply for a visa to enter the US.

Key Takeaways:

  • ESTA is a program that allows citizens of certain countries to travel to the US without a visa for short stays.
  • ESTA validity depends on factors such as passport expiration date and the length of intended stay.
  • An ESTA does not guarantee entry into the US , and travelers must still undergo inspection at the port of entry.
  • ESTA cannot be directly renewed, and travelers must apply for a new ESTA for subsequent trips.
  • If an ESTA is denied or a traveler wants to stay longer than 90 days, a visa may be required.

Understanding ESTA and Its Purpose

Before delving into the validity period of an ESTA, it’s essential to understand what this travel authorization is and why it is required for visiting the United States. ESTA, or Electronic System for Travel Authorization , is a program run by the US government that allows citizens of certain countries to travel to the US for short stays without a visa. It serves as a pre-screening process to determine the eligibility of travelers before their departure.

The primary purpose of ESTA is to enhance security and ensure the safety of both the United States and its visitors. By requiring travelers to apply for an ESTA , the US government can assess their eligibility and potential risks before granting entry into the country. ESTA collects biographical and travel information, which is cross-checked against various databases to identify any red flags or security concerns.

Once approved, the ESTA authorization allows travelers to board flights or ships to the United States. However, it’s essential to note that ESTA does not grant entry into the US . Upon arrival, travelers must undergo inspection by Customs and Border Protection officers, who ultimately have the authority to permit or deny entry.

Travelers should also be aware that the validity of an ESTA depends on several factors. It is typically valid for a maximum of two years or until the expiration date of the traveler’s passport, whichever comes first. After the expiration date, a new ESTA application must be submitted if the individual wishes to visit the United States again. Additionally, factors such as travel history, criminal history, immigration status, and travel plans can impact the validity of an ESTA.

In summary, ESTA is a crucial travel authorization for individuals planning to visit the United States. By understanding its purpose and the factors that can affect its validity, travelers can ensure a smooth and hassle-free US travel experience.

Factors Affecting ESTA Validity

Several factors can influence the duration for which an ESTA remains valid, and it’s crucial to be aware of these considerations before planning your trip to the United States. Understanding these factors will help ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience. Here are some key factors that can impact the validity of your ESTA:

  • Passport Expiration Date: The validity of your ESTA cannot exceed the expiration date of your passport. It is important to ensure that your passport will remain valid throughout your intended stay in the US.
  • Travel History: If you have a history of overstaying your allowed period of admission in the US or have violated any US immigration laws in the past, it may affect the validity of your ESTA.
  • Criminal History: If you have a criminal record or have been involved in any illegal activities, it may impact the approval and validity of your ESTA.
  • Immigration Status: If your immigration status has changed since your last ESTA application, it may affect the validity of your current ESTA. Make sure to update your ESTA information if necessary.
  • Travel Plans: Changes to your travel plans, such as visiting different locations or extending your stay beyond the approved period, may require you to apply for a new ESTA or a visa.

It’s important to note that ESTA validity does not guarantee entry into the US. Customs and Border Protection officers have the final authority to grant or deny entry at the port of entry, regardless of the validity of your ESTA. Therefore, it’s essential to comply with all US immigration laws and regulations during your stay.

By understanding these factors and taking necessary actions, you can ensure that your ESTA remains valid for the duration of your travel, allowing for a smooth and hassle-free experience during your visit to the United States.

Maximum Validity Period of an ESTA

The maximum validity period for an ESTA is an essential aspect to understand to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience to the United States. The validity of an ESTA typically lasts for two years or until the expiration date of the traveler’s passport, whichever comes first. This means that travelers can use the same ESTA for multiple trips within this period without the need to reapply.

It is important to note that the validity of an ESTA is closely tied to the expiration date of the traveler’s passport. If the passport expires before the two-year period, the ESTA will also become invalid. Therefore, travelers should ensure they have a valid passport that will remain valid throughout their intended stay in the US.

Travelers should also be aware that having a valid ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States. Upon arrival, all travelers, regardless of their ESTA status, are subject to inspection by Customs and Border Protection officers at the port of entry. The decision to allow entry into the US ultimately lies with these officers.

Understanding the maximum validity period of an ESTA is crucial for travelers planning to visit the United States. By ensuring their ESTA remains valid for the duration of their intended stay, travelers can avoid any immigration issues and enjoy a seamless travel experience. Remember to apply for or renew your ESTA in a timely manner, keeping in mind the expiration date of your passport and any upcoming travel plans.

ESTA Application Process and Requirements

Applying for an ESTA is a crucial step in preparing for your trip to the United States, and understanding the application process and requirements is essential. The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an online system that determines the eligibility of travelers from visa waiver countries to enter the US. To apply for an ESTA , you need to visit the official ESTA website and complete the online application form.

The application form requires you to provide personal information, including your full name, date of birth, passport details, contact information, and travel plans. It is important to ensure that all the information provided is accurate and matches the details on your passport. Any discrepancies may result in your application being denied. Additionally, you will be asked a series of security-related questions, including inquiries about your health, criminal history, and immigration status. It is important to answer these questions truthfully and accurately.

Once you have completed the application form, you will be required to pay the ESTA fee , which is currently $14 for each application. The fee can be paid using a credit or debit card. It is important to note that the fee is non-refundable, regardless of whether your application is approved or denied. After submitting your application and payment, you will receive a confirmation email with your ESTA application number. It is recommended to print a copy of this confirmation for your records.

The processing time for an ESTA application is typically instant, with most applications being approved within minutes. However, in some cases, it may take up to 72 hours for a decision. It is advisable to apply for an ESTA well in advance of your intended travel dates to allow for any potential delays or complications. Once your ESTA is approved, it will be valid for a maximum of two years or until the expiration date of your passport.

By following the ESTA application process and ensuring that you meet all the requirements, you can obtain your ESTA with ease and embark on a seamless journey to the United States. Remember to check the status of your ESTA before your trip to ensure it is still valid, as changes in your passport or travel plans may affect its validity. With your approved ESTA in hand, you can enjoy your trip to the US and explore all the wonders it has to offer.

Renewing an ESTA and Multiple Trips

If you plan to visit the United States again after your initial trip, it’s important to be aware of the process for renewing your ESTA or applying for a new one. The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) cannot be directly renewed, so you will need to submit a new application. However, the good news is that the same ESTA can be used for multiple trips within its validity period, making it convenient for frequent travelers to the US.

When renewing your ESTA, you will need to provide updated information, including any changes to your passport, travel plans, or personal details. It’s crucial to ensure that your passport is valid for the entire duration of your intended stay in the US, as an expired passport can affect your ESTA validity.

Remember, ESTA is suitable for short stays of up to 90 days, such as for tourism, business, or transit purposes. If you are planning to stay in the US for longer than 90 days or engage in activities not allowed under the Visa Waiver Program, you may need to apply for a visa instead. Additionally, if your ESTA application is denied, you will also need to apply for a visa before traveling to the US.

Ensuring your ESTA is up-to-date and valid before each trip to the US will help you breeze through the arrival process and avoid any unnecessary delays or complications at the port of entry. Be sure to check the expiration date of your ESTA and apply for a new one if needed, using the official ESTA website. Now that you have a better understanding of renewing an ESTA, you can confidently plan your future trips to the United States.

While an ESTA serves as a convenient travel authorization for short stays in the United States, certain circumstances may require travelers to explore alternative options, such as applying for a visa. As an ESTA grants a maximum stay of 90 days, travelers who intend to stay longer than this period will need to obtain a visa to enter and remain in the US legally.

Additionally, if a traveler’s ESTA application is denied, they will need to pursue a visa to travel to the US. An ESTA denial can occur due to various factors, including a criminal history, previous immigration violations, or incomplete or inaccurate information provided in the application. In such cases, it is essential to consult with the nearest US embassy or consulate to determine the appropriate visa category and requirements for their specific situation.

Applying for a visa involves a more extensive application process, which typically includes an interview at the US embassy or consulate, documentation of the purpose of the visit, evidence of financial capability, and other supporting documents. It is important for travelers to familiarize themselves with the requirements of the specific visa category they are applying for and allow sufficient time for the visa application process, as it may take longer than the ESTA application process.

Table: Comparison of ESTA and Visa for Extended Stays

When considering the appropriate travel authorization for an extended stay in the US, it is crucial for travelers to assess their specific circumstances, duration of stay, and visa requirements. Seeking professional guidance from an immigration attorney or consulting with the nearest US embassy or consulate can provide valuable insights and assistance in navigating the visa application process.

Remember, whether choosing an ESTA or a visa, complying with US entry requirements is essential for a smooth and enjoyable travel experience. Understanding the limitations and options available will help travelers make informed decisions and ensure their stay in the US is both legal and enjoyable.

Overview of ESTA and Entry into the US

It’s important to note that obtaining a valid ESTA is not the sole requirement for entering the United States, and travelers must undergo inspection by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers upon arrival. The ESTA, or Electronic System for Travel Authorization, serves as a pre-screening tool to determine the eligibility of travelers from certain countries for entry into the US.

When travelers arrive at a US port of entry, CBP officers are responsible for verifying their eligibility to enter the country. This process includes reviewing travel documents, conducting interviews, and assessing the purpose and intended length of stay. CBP officers have the authority to make the final decision on whether a traveler can enter the US.

It is imperative for travelers to have their travel documents, including a valid passport and ESTA approval, ready for inspection by CBP officers. Additionally, travelers should be prepared to provide any requested supporting documentation, such as proof of accommodation, return ticket, or evidence of sufficient financial resources.

Ensuring a smooth entry into the US is essential for a hassle-free travel experience. By understanding the role of CBP officers and the importance of complying with their requirements, travelers can increase their chances of a seamless entry process.

The role of Customs and Border Protection

Customs and Border Protection officers play a crucial role in safeguarding the borders of the United States. They are responsible for enforcing immigration laws, customs regulations, and protecting national security. Their primary focus is to ensure that all individuals entering the country are admissible and pose no threat to the safety and well-being of the United States and its citizens.

While obtaining a valid ESTA is an essential step, it is just the beginning. Travelers must be aware that their entry into the US is subject to inspection and approval by CBP officers. By cooperating with CBP officers and providing accurate and honest information, travelers can help facilitate a smooth entry process and enjoy their time in the United States.

Preparing for a Seamless US Travel Experience

To make the most of your US travel journey , it’s essential to be well-prepared and equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources for a seamless experience. Whether you are visiting for leisure, business, or any other purpose, careful planning and understanding of the travel process can help ensure a hassle-free trip. Here are some tips to help you navigate your US travel journey with ease.

1. Familiarize Yourself with ESTA

As mentioned earlier, an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is an important requirement for travelers visiting the United States from eligible countries. Before your trip, make sure to familiarize yourself with the ESTA program and its application process. Ensure that you have a valid ESTA for your intended stay duration to avoid any unnecessary complications.

2. Check Entry Requirements and Travel Restrictions

Prior to your travel, it’s crucial to stay informed about any entry requirements and travel restrictions that may be in place. These can include COVID-19 related protocols, visa requirements, or additional documentation. By checking the US government’s official websites or contacting relevant authorities, you can clarify the necessary entry requirements to avoid any last-minute surprises.

3. Organize Your Travel Documents

Keeping your travel documents organized is essential for a seamless travel experience. Ensure that you have a valid passport with sufficient validity beyond your travel dates. Additionally, have a printed or digital copy of your ESTA confirmation, flight itineraries, hotel reservations, and any other relevant documents that may be required for your trip. This will help streamline the immigration process and save you time upon arrival.

4. Research Your Destination

Before embarking on your US travel journey , take the time to research your destination. Familiarize yourself with the local customs, transportation options, and any specific regulations or cultural nuances that may be relevant to your visit. This will not only enhance your overall experience but also ensure that you can navigate your way around with ease.

By following these tips and adequately preparing for your US travel journey, you can ensure a seamless and memorable experience. Remember to check the validity of your ESTA, stay updated on entry requirements, keep your travel documents well-organized, and research your destination. With proper planning, you can make the most of your time in the United States and enjoy all that this diverse and vibrant country has to offer.

In the following, detailed instruction on how to complete your  ESTA  application is presented. All pieces of information should be given truthfully because untrue statements could lead to problems when attempting to enter the US. In the worst case, wrong answers could result in an ESTA rejection.

Please keep in mind that all information you need to provide is intended to enhance the security of the United States. Thus, your data will only be submitted to the responsible US authorities but not to any other third party.

  • Valid biometric passport
  • Personal data (including names of your parents)
  • If applicable: address of current or former employer
  • Address of your accommodation or contact person in the USA
  • Your payment information (bank details, PayPal, credit card, etc.)

All mandatory fields in the application form are marked with an asterisk (*) and must be completed.

If questions should arise in the course of the application, you are welcome to contact our service team. We look forward to supporting you while filling in your ESTA application.

Step 1: Personal and Travel Data

Create an esta account.

Before you can start filling in your ESTA application, you have to create a customer account. As an ESTA is valid for two years, you can log into your account and check your ESTA status at any time after applying for your ESTA. Please use a valid e-mail address and choose a secure password in order to generate a valid ESTA account.

Create an ESTA Account

Accept the Conditions

In order for us to file your ESTA application on your behalf and submit it to the US authorities as well as to collect and process your personal data in accordance with the German Data Protection Act (GDPA), it is indispensable for us to receive your consent. In order to allow us to submit your ESTA application, simply click on the two boxes at the bottom left to check them.

Accept conditions

Quantity of people

After successfully generating a personal customer account, you can then include the number of travelers. Do you only want to apply for an ESTA for yourself or do fellow travelers have to be included in a group application? The number you enter here decides how many ESTA applications you would like to register for.

Afterwards, please enter all data for every individual applicant one after the other.

Quantity of people

If you are submitting multiple ESTA applications, be sure to get digital copies of your fellow travelers' passports so you can upload them within the ESTA application process.

Uploading your passport

Have the data page of your passport ready to upload at the beginning of your application. All relevant passport data will then be automatically transferred into the designated form fields through the data reading software integrated into the application process.

The upload file must be a clearly readable image of the respective data page including passport photo and machine-readable area (lower third of the data page) and has to be uploaded as jpg, jpeg, png, or gif.

The following data will be transferred automatically:

  • Family name
  • Passport number
  • Country of issue
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth

esta application travel dates

The machine-readable part of your passport (outlined) must cover the full width of the photo.

ESTA cannot be approved with a temporary passport or a children's passport. Also, if you have applied for a new passport, you must request a new ESTA.

Names of Parents

Your parents' names are mandatory fields. If you do not or only partially know these names, please enter 'UNKNOWN' in the appropriate fields.

Names of parents in the ESTA application

Contact Details of the Applicant

Your current contact details, such as address and telephone number, are also compulsory fields and must be filled in.

Phone Number

Enter the telephone number where you can best be reached. You can choose between the following options:

You can select the country code from the dropdown menu. Please enter your phone number, including the area code, without any spaces in the field "Phone."

phone number in the ESTA application

If you do not have a phone number, you can also enter the phone number of a contact person, such as a family member, friend, or business associate. If you choose this option, please select "Other" in the dropdown menu for "Type of phone number."

Home Address

Indicating a valid address is essential when applying for an ESTA and must be submitted!

In the esta-application.com form, street names can be abbreviated in the usual way. The following spellings would therefore be possible:

  • Main Street

Home address in the ESTA application

E-Mail Address

Please also provide an E-Mail address that you can access on an unrestricted basis. Your approved ESTA confirmation will later be sent to this E-Mail address.

E Mail address in the ESTA application

esta-application.com will always send your ESTA approval as a PDF attachment via E-Mail to you. Therefore, please check your E-Mail inbox as well as the junk mail folder on a regular basis. As a standard rule, postal dispatch of your ESTA confirmation does not take place but can be requested.

Information on your employment

If you are or ever were employed, you need to answer ”Yes” to this question. As a consequence, the employer is required to complete the ESTA application. In this case, please indicate the name of the company or organization of your current or former employer.

What is often overlooked when answering this question is that the following information is also allowed in the "Name of employer" field:

  • Self-employed
  • Stay-at-home-parent

You can also enter any other wording here to describe your current employment status.

Employment information in the ESTA application

However, if you have never been employed in any form, you can answer the question about your employment with "No."

Social Media

Since the end of May 2020, you should also provide information about your online presence for the past five years. If you do have social media accounts that you have used during this time, answer 'Yes' to this question. Furthermore, you need to enter the corresponding ID or your user, profile, or screen name as chosen for the respective social media supplier.

Social Media in the ESTA application

If you do not use social media, you can answer this question with "No."

The US authorities intend to use this data query to identify terrorists more quickly to protect national security. They should only have the possibility to read public posts so that your privacy is not affected! A good time to check your own settings for Facebook & Co again.

Emergency Contact Details

In case something happens to you in the USA (an accident, serious illness, etc.), the US authorities will inform your emergency contact. This can be someone inside or outside the US, such as

  • a family member
  • a business associate.

All fields must also be completed here! If you don't have an emergency contact or don't know the last name, you can fill in the fields with 'UNKNOWN' and/or enter two zeros (00) for the phone number.

Emergency Contact Details in the ESTA application

Travel Information

The amount of the requested travel information depends on whether the USA is your final destination or if your trip is in transit to another country, which means you would not leave the airport, but, for instance, only change flights at an American airport.

Travel Information in the ESTA application

If you would like to enter the USA, this question needs to be answered with "No" and a contact person in the USA has to be indicated.

Even if you need the ESTA permit for transit only, we recommend applying for a regular ESTA as a precaution. ESTA is valid for two years, which means you can use it again when reentering the US in this time period. If you have no US contact due to the planned transit, enter the name and address of the US airport where you will arrive

Your contact person within the USA could be, for example:

  • a business associate

However, if you do not know anyone in the USA or are planning a round trip, it is best to state the name, address, and phone number of your (first) place of accommodation in the USA, e.g., a hotel.

You can also fill in the fields with ”UNKNOWN” if you really don't have a planned accommodation or anything comparable. However, we strongly would like to encourage you to include a US contact if possible.

Passport Date of Expiry

How long your passport needs to be valid for your ESTA application depends on your citizenship. Citizens of the so-called Six Month Club can travel with a passport valid until the day they leave the USA.

Passport Expiry date for the ESTA application

The black marking indicates where you can usually find your passport's date of expiration.

Passport or Identity Card from another Country

If you have ever received or still hold a passport or identity card from a country other than the issuing country of your passport specified in the ESTA application, you must answer this question with "Yes" and provide the following information:

  • Type of document (passport or identity card)
  • Document number (passport number or identity card number)
  • Expiration year

If you do not know the expiration year and/or document number, you can also enter four zeros (0000).

Another country in the ESTA application

Other Citizenships at the Time of Application

If you have another nationality at the time of the ESTA application, i.e., so-called dual citizenship, you must select the appropriate country from the dropdown menu.

Other citizenships in the ESTA application

You must also indicate how you acquired this citizenship. Different countries have different laws for obtaining citizenship, such as the principle of descent in Germany. The following options are, therefore, available to you when you fill out this question:

  • Ancestry (one or both parents are citizens of this country)
  • Naturalization (you have applied for and obtained citizenship)
  • Birth (you were born in the country)

If you choose "Other," you must briefly elaborate on how you obtained this citizenship.

Other Citizenships in the Past

If in the past - i.e., before filling in the ESTA application - you had held a nationality that you surrendered, please select the appropriate country from the dropdown menu.

Former citizenship of another country in the ESTA application

Membership in Trusted Traveler Programs

If you are participating in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Global Entry Program or any other Trusted Traveler Program for facilitated entry into the United States, please enter your membership number here.

Global Entry Membership in the ESTA application

Filling out the ESTA Security Questions

To enable the US authorities to assess possible risk factors of the traveler, there are nine final security questions on the topics:

  • Criminal records
  • Drugs and drug abuse
  • Terrorist Intentions
  • Former VISA/ESTA Fraud
  • Work intentions in the U.S.
  • Unauthorized exceeding of the duration of stay in the USA
  • Citizenship of or travel to certain “problematic” countries

Again, it is essential  to answer all questions truthfully. Please read them very carefully. In the worst case, you may be permanently denied to enter the USA (with an ESTA) if the US authorities can prove a false statement.

If you have to answer “Yes“ to one or more questions, your ESTA application will be denied. In order to save you unnecessary costs for the application, esta-application.com will not complete your application in this case. You would have to apply for a  US Visa instead.

1. Security Question: Health and Addictions

The first question raises many concerns when filling out the ESTA application – Do you have to answer "Yes" if you have the flu? No, you don't have to!

Whether a disease is a danger to the population depends on two factors:

  • The disease is contagious and can be transmitted through body fluids, breath, or insect bites.
  • The spread of the disease is difficult to control and difficult to cure.

Although the flu or cold fulfills the conditions of factor 1, the spread can be controlled, and the chances of recovery are good. You can therefore answer "No" with a clear conscience at this point

However, if you suffer from any of the following diseases, you must answer "Yes":

  • Lymphogranuloma venereum
  • Granuloma inguinale
  • Infectious leprosy
  • Yellow fever
  • Active tuberculosis
  • Syphilis (infectious stage)
  • Viral hemorrhagic fever, including Ebola, Lassa, Marburg, Crimean-Congo fever
  • Acute respiratory diseases that are transmissible to others and can be fatal (for example, COVID-19 )

If you have suffered from one of these diseases in the past but are now cured, you can answer "No" but should carry a medical certificate confirming this.

With regard to addictions, if you occasionally use drugs that are permitted in your home country and also do not have a serious addiction problem, you can answer "No" at this point. However, if you are addicted to drugs, you must answer "Yes."

2. Security Question: Previous Penalties or Convictions

The question about previous convictions and sentences really only has to be answered with "Yes" if the offense causing the conviction was serious bodily injury or serious damage to property.

However, if it is only a fine notice, e.g., for speeding, you can calmly answer "No" here. Note, however, that prior convictions and sentences do not become time-barred for the US authorities!

3. Security Question: Drug Use or Trafficking

The question of illegal possession, consumption, and trafficking of and with drugs is based on the first security question. It is important to note that you only have to answer "yes" to this question if it has brought you into conflict with the law in your country.

If you are acting within the scope of official legislation in your activities involving intoxicants, you may check "No" at this point!

Since possession of up to 5 g of cannabis per person is allowed in the Netherlands, Dutch people may answer "No" to this question if you do not exceed the country's own regulations.

4. Security Question: Terrorist Intentions

If you have not been involved in terrorist, espionage, and/or sabotage activities in the past or plan to be involved in such activities in the future, you can also answer "No" to this question.

5. Security Question: Former VISA/ESTA Fraud

If the US authorities noticed that you knowingly provided false information when applying for a US visa or ESTA in the past, you must answer "Yes" here. As this means that you have practically no chance of entering the United States, you should make sure that you always answer all the questions in the ESTA application truthfully so that such a case will never occur!

6. Security Question: Work Intentions in the USA

You only have to answer "Yes" to the question about work intentions or illegal employment in the USA in the past if

  • you're planning on looking for a paid job in the US  or
  • You have worked in the USA in the past without a valid work visa.

However, this is not the case if, for example, your non-American employer sends you to a conference in the USA. In such cases, you may also stay in the USA with an ESTA for up to 90 days and can therefore answer this question with "No".

7. Security Question: Visa or ESTA denial in the Past

If this is not your first ESTA application and an application was denied in the past or if you were denied entry to the US at the US border, you must answer "Yes" to this question. In this case, no ESTA will be granted to you.

Although answering "Yes" to an ESTA security question basically eliminates your chance of receiving ESTA approval, you must provide truthful answers to all questions in the ESTA application. If you give false information, you may be subject to permanent entry bans and criminal penalties. In the event of an ESTA rejection, please contact our staff at the US Visa Service .

8. Security Question: Unauthorised Exceeding of the Duration of Stay

The question of an unauthorized exceeding of the duration of stay refers to your possible USA visits in the past. If you have ever stayed in the United States longer than permitted by your US visa or ESTA, you must answer "Yes" to this question.

9. Security Question: Citizenships of or Travel to Certain Countries

US authorities classify Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, North Korea, Libya, and Syria as problematic countries. If you traveled to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1st, 2011, or have been in Cuba since January 12th, 2021, you no longer qualify for the ESTA process.

The duration and reason for your stay are irrelevant here. You would need to apply for a visa in this case.

Also, if you are a citizen of Cuba, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria at the same time as being a citizen of a VWP country, you will not be granted ESTA approval.

Confirmation of Comprehension and Order

At this point, you must confirm that you have understood and truthfully answered all questions and that you authorize us to submit your application to the US authorities (the responsible Department of Homeland Security). To do so, place two checkmarks in the appropriate place.

Step 2: Summary of Your Data

After completing the ESTA application, an overview of all of your entered data will be displayed. We kindly would like to ask you to carefully double-check all information you have provided. If you notice any errors, you can use the pencil symbols to go directly to the section of the application.

Step 3: Decide for the appropriate service package

Step 4: Payment

In the penultimate step, the total amount to be paid will be displayed. At this point, you can also enter a possible voucher code. You can then conveniently choose between the following payment options:

  • Credit Card

After you have agreed to our general terms and conditions, the data protection declaration, and the premature expiry of the right of withdrawal, you can click on the button 'Continue to payment page' to reach the page that allows you to complete the payment. Your ESTA application will then be transmitted to us and we will start working on it.

Step 5: Application Successfully Submitted

Congratulations! You have now come quite a bit closer to your USA trip. As soon as your application has been sent to us, we will carefully check your data and will contact you directly in case of any ambiguities.

Once all details are correct, we will submit your ESTA application to the US authorities, and afterwards, you will shortly be notified of your status by e-mail.

Note: It can take up to 72 hours for the US authorities to process your application! However, we usually process your application immediately after receipt.

We plant a tree!

Importance of knowing the processing time for us esta.

Understanding how long it takes to get your US travel authorization (ESTA) is really important for a few key reasons:

  • Planning Your Trip: Knowing how long it takes for your ESTA to be processed will help you plan your trip better. You’ll know exactly when to apply to get approval for your travel dates.
  • Avoiding Last-Minute Problems: Applying for your ESTA early helps avoid any last-minute issues. Sometimes, other countries even need your ESTA for flights that pass through the US. Knowing how long it takes to process can stop any unexpected problems.
  • Handling Emergencies: If you must travel urgently, knowing the processing time helps determine whether you can get your ESTA in time. If not, you can make other plans without worrying.
  • Feeling Confident: It is reassuring to know how long it usually takes to get your ESTA. This way, you can plan your trip confidently, knowing you’ve given yourself enough time to get approval.
  • Saving Money: Some might pay extra to speed up their ESTA approval. But if you know the regular processing time, you can decide if paying extra is necessary or if you have enough time to wait.
  • Preparing for Reapplications: Knowing how long it takes to process if your ESTA application is denied or expires helps you plan when to reapply. This ensures you have valid authorization for future trips.

Things to remember to fasten up your ESTA Application

To speed up your ESTA application process, here are some important things to remember:

  • Use a Secure Internet Connection: Ensure you have a stable and secure Internet connection when filling out your application. This helps prevent connectivity issues and ensures your data is transmitted safely.
  • Clear Cookies and Cache: Before starting your application, clear your browser’s cookies and cache. This helps ensure the application form loads correctly and prevents technical issues.
  • Prepare Required Information: Gather all necessary information before starting your application. This includes your passport details, travel itinerary, and contact information.
  • Complete Application Early: Submit your ESTA application well before your planned travel dates. This gives you time to address any issues or delays during the processing.
  • Use Correct Information: Double-check that all the information you provide is accurate and matches the details on your passport exactly. Any discrepancies can delay or even lead to rejection of your application.
  • Review Application Thoroughly: Review all the information you’ve entered before submitting your application. This helps catch any errors or omissions that could cause delays or complications.
  • Pay Attention to Payment: Have your payment method ready to complete the application process smoothly. Ensure that your credit or debit card information is entered accurately to avoid payment processing delays.
  • Check Email Regularly: After submitting your application, check your email regularly for updates or requests for additional information. Respond promptly to any communications from the ESTA system to avoid delays.

General guidelines for the US ESTA

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Here are some key points about ESTA:

  • ESTA is designed for travel to the U.S. for business or pleasure purposes.
  • It does not allow for employment, study, or residence in the U.S.
  • It is not a visa.
  • Travelers can stay in the U.S. for up to 90 days per visit.
  • Overstaying can result in being barred from future travel under the VWP and may affect future U.S. visa applications.
  • An approved ESTA is generally valid for two years or until the traveler’s passport expires (whichever comes first).
  • Will stay in the United States for 90 days or less for business, pleasure or transit.
  • Arrive using a carrier that is a signatory of the Visa Waiver Program.
  • Unless the traveler is a resident of contiguous territory or adjacent islands, their travel cannot conclude in these areas.
  • Traveler’s valid email address.
  • Traveler’s home address and phone number.
  • Traveler’s emergency point of contact is phone, address, and email.
  • Valid passport(s) from a Visa Waiver Program country.
  • Have a return or onward ticket.
  • Step 1: Click on “Get United States ESTA now.”
  • EmailPhone number
  • Nationality
  • Review your application details and proceed to payment.
  • Personal information
  • Passport information
  • Additional travel details.
  • Upload a recent passport-sized photograph.
  • Upload a scanned copy of your passport biographical page (JPEG format, less than 200 KB).
  • Carefully review your application once more and submit it.
  • If approved, you’ll receive your US ESTA via email.
  • Print the US ESTA and carry it with you during your travel.
  • ESTA approval does not guarantee entry; U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers determine admissibility upon travelers’ arrival.

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in the US set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the US Embassy or a consulate in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering the US.

Passport validity requirements

To enter the US, your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay.

If you’re travelling through another country on your way to or from the US, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport.

Dual nationals

US law requires US citizens to enter and exit the US using a US passport. Contact the US Embassy or a consulate in the UK for more information.

Visa requirements

To enter or transit through the US, you must have either an  Electronic System for Travel Authorisation ( ESTA ) visa waiver  or a visa .

  • been arrested (even if the arrest did not result in a criminal conviction)
  • a criminal record
  • been refused admission into, or have been deported from the US
  • previously overstayed under an ESTA visa waiver

How to Check If My ESTA is Valid & Length of Approval

About esta expiration.

Does ESTA expire?

1.Does ESTA expire?

An ESTA travel authorization expires two years from the date it was authorized formally. However, this is not the case if your passport will expire within two years. If your passport expires within two years after obtaining an ESTA, then the ESTA also will expire on the expiration date of your passport. For this reason, if you apply for ESTA with less than two years remaining on your passport, then both your passport and the ESTA will expire on the same date. When deciding to travel to the U.S. and apply for an ESTA, be sure to check your passport’s expiration date to make sure that there will be no problems with your planned travel dates.

2.When do I need to reapply for ESTA?

If you intend to use the ESTA program after your ESTA has expired, you must apply for a new one. This is why the term “reapplication” is used instead of “renewal.” There is no system for extending the expiration date of an ESTA through renewal. For this reason, if you plan to use ESTA again to travel to the U.S. without a visa in the future, you will need to reapply for ESTA.

When do I need to reapply for ESTA?

3.What if my ESTA expires while I’m in the U.S.?

There is no need to worry if an ESTA that was valid when you entered the U.S. will expire before you leave the country. You will not need to apply for ESTA again before leaving the U.S. As long as your ESTA was valid when you entered the U.S., there will be no problem even if it has expired by the time you leave the U.S. The same is true when changing to connecting flights in the U.S. There will be no problem as long as your ESTA is valid when you change flights. However, depending on what arrangements have been made with the destination country of the connecting flight, in some cases you might be refused entry to the U.S. or not allowed to board the flight even if you have a valid ESTA if there is not enough time left before your passport will expire. In general, it is recommended that you renew your passport about one year before it expires.

4.May I travel to Guam or Saipan while my ESTA is expired?

While all travelers visiting the continental U.S. and Hawaii without a visa must apply for and receive ESTA authorization first, it is possible to travel to Guam and Saipan (Northern Mariana Islands) without using ESTA. To be able to do so, you must be a citizen of a country that is a participant in the Guam-Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Visa Waiver Program (Guam-CNMI VWP), and you must have a valid passport. While there are no problems with visiting Guam or Saipan even if your ESTA has expired, upon arrival at the airport travelers with ESTAs are eligible for preferential treatment by using ESTA lanes that greatly shorten the waiting time for immigration screening, which facilitate and speed up the immigration process. Since you can expect long lines at the airports in Guam and Saipan especially during summer vacation and the Japanese New Year’s holidays, it is recommended to apply for ESTA as a way of getting your visit off to a more comfortable start.

May I travel to Guam or Saipan while my ESTA is expired

5.Does a baby need an ESTA to travel to the U.S.?

All travelers visiting the U.S. without a visa, regardless of their age, must apply for and receive ESTA authorization. ESTA authorization is required for all members of families, or any groups visiting the U.S., including minors, preschool children, and infants, so be sure to apply for ESTA for all members of your group including children. ESTA is valid for two years regardless of age.

Additional information on ESTA expiration and reapplication

Is there a deadline for esta renewal or reapplication.

ESTA is valid for two years. You may apply for a new ESTA before or after a previous one has expired. There are no restrictions on the number of times you can obtain a new ESTA authorization which is valid for two years from the date of issue. If you wanted to, you even could apply for a new ESTA again the day after obtaining the previous one.

What if I want to correct my ESTA application information?

For security reasons, U.S. Customs and Border Protection does not permit revision of the information in an ESTA after you have applied for it, even if you later notice a mistake in important information such as your name, nationality, date of birth, or passport information. This is due to heightened security measures in various aspects. If it were possible to change such important information after applying for an ESTA then individuals with malicious intent might be able to change the information in order to board flights without authorization, possibly resulting in an illegal and dangerous situation. Fill out your ESTA application very carefully, since another application fee will be charged if you notice a mistake after completing the application and then reapply with correct information. Information such as email address and your address while in the U.S. are not considered important information, so if you notice an error in such information you do not need to correct it in order to travel to the U.S.

Why have I received an email warning that my ESTA will expire soon even though I already reapplied?

Even if you already have reapplied for ESTA because your current one will expire soon, when the expiration date of the previous ESTA approaches you will receive an email warning you of its expiration. In general, this email, which is sent by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to every party who has obtained ESTA travel authorization, has the subject heading “ESTA Expiration Warning.” This English-language email is sent to the email address you registered with Customs and Border Protection when applying for ESTA. There is no need to be overly concerned about its content. For safety’s sake, however, you should check to make sure that it concerns the expiration date of your previous ESTA and not the one you applied for recently. An excerpt of this email is reproduced below.

ATTENTION! The travel authorization submitted on September 20, 2014 via ESTA will expire within the next 30 days. It is not possible to extend or renew a current ESTA travel authorization. You will need to apply for a new ESTA travel authorization.

If there is an error in information such as your date of birth, gender, nationality, country of birth, passport issue date, passport expiration date, contact information (email address, telephone number, type of telephone, emergency contact), or destination information (where you plan to stay)

When using the ESTA Online Center’s service, you can correct the information above even after your ESTA application is completed. Apply by clicking again on “Apply Here for ESTA” on the homepage of this site and entering all customer information. After checking to make sure that the information you entered is correct on the Check Application page, click “Send Above Information” to advance to the Check Application Modification page. Both the new information you just entered and the information you entered in the past will be displayed. Check this information again, and if it is correct, click on “Send Changes” to complete submittal of the corrected information. Note that the screening procedures for correction requests may take up to 72 hours, like those for ESTA applications. Once the screening process is completed for the requested corrections to the ESTA application, new ESTA authorization information (application number and expiration date) will be sent to your registered email address. Be sure to save this authorization information. Also note that when using webmail or mobile email addresses the email confirming receipt of your request might be sorted to the SPAM file. If you are unable to correct or revise information through the method above, use the Contact Us form to send detailed information on your inquiry after filling out your name, email address, and application ID.

If there is an error in your name or passport number

If there is an error in your name or passport number, use the Contact Us form to send your detailed correction request in the body of your inquiry after filling out your name, email address, and application ID. Note that the screening procedures for correction requests may take up to 72 hours, like those for ESTA applications. Once the screening process is completed for the requested corrections to the ESTA application, new ESTA authorization information (application number and expiration date) will be sent to your registered email address. Be sure to save this authorization information.

If you have been refused ESTA authorization due to answering a question incorrectly

Contact U.S. Customs and Border Protection directly if you have been refused ESTA authorization because you accidentally answered “Yes” to any of the “Other questions” on the application or you answered “Yes” because you misunderstood the question and mistakenly thought that it applied to you. Using the contact form on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website , describe in detail the reason why you answered “Yes” to the question. If your authorization for the visa waiver program was declined due to an arrest or conviction (a violation such as arrest history, criminal history, and/or possession of drugs), apply for a visa at the U.S. embassy directly. The embassy will review your application and make a judgment as to whether or not to allow your entry to the U.S. on a tourist visa or any other visa. Travelers who have entered false information on an ESTA application may be refused entry during immigration screening in the U.S., even if they were issued ESTA authorization and allowed to board their flight. In some cases, refusal of entry to the U.S. can lead to prohibition of entry for five years. Be sure to fill out the correct information on your ESTA application form.

Summary of ESTA expiration date

Esta expires after two years for all travelers.

It is determined that ESTA authorization is valid for two years for everybody, with no exceptions. However, if your passport will expire in less than two years, your ESTA also will expire on the same date as your passport.

Reapply when your ESTA expires

If two years have passed since you visited the U.S. using ESTA and you plan to visit the U.S. again, reapply for ESTA. However, you do not need to reapply if you plan to visit the U.S. using a visa. If planning to visit the U.S. using ESTA, check the expiration date of your current ESTA and reapply if it has expired.

There is no ESTA renewal system

Many travelers believe mistakenly that they can renew their ESTA if it has expired. However, there is no renewal system for ESTA. While the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website does have a section on “updating” ESTA, this refers to updating information such as the email address, telephone number, and address in the U.S. that you registered when applying for ESTA. It does not mean that you can update your ESTA with an extended expiration date. Since there is no way to extend the ESTA expiration date, reapply for ESTA if yours is about to expire or already has expired.

When reapplying for ESTA before it has expired

There is no restriction on the number of times you may apply for ESTA, even if your current ESTA travel authorization will not expire anytime soon. When you apply for a new ESTA and are issued a new application number and expiration date, the ESTA information that you had been able to use until then will be invalidated and only the ESTA information that you applied for most recently may be used. You may reapply and obtain new ESTA information at any time, even before your current one expires.

When you reapply, your previous ESTA information will be invalidated

While you may apply for a new ESTA even before your current one expires, your previous ESTA information will be invalidated as of the time you receive the new ESTA. It is not possible to recover invalidated ESTA information. When you reapply, you will be assigned a new ESTA expiration date. Make arrangements to reapply by taking into consideration the expiration date of your current ESTA and your future travel plans to the U.S.

There’s no problem even if your ESTA has expired by the date you depart from the U.S.

There’s no problem if your ESTA is expired on the date you depart from the U.S. However, you must enter the U.S. before your ESTA expires. Your ESTA also must be valid when changing flights or making connections in the U.S. Before traveling to the U.S., check the time remaining before your passport expires and the expiration date of your current ESTA.

Key points on ESTA reapplication

Since there is no ESTA renewal system, conduct application procedures again if your ESTA has expired or your current one will expire soon. You may apply for an ESTA again even if considerable time remains until your current one expires. However, when you reapply your existing registration information will be invalidated and you will be issued new ESTA information with a new expiration date. Check the expiration dates of your passport and your current ESTA before reapplying.

You can travel to Guam and Saipan even without an ESTA

While you must apply for ESTA to travel to Hawaii, it is possible to enter the U.S. territories of Guam and Saipan (Northern Mariana Islands) without an ESTA. However, there are various advantages to applying for ESTA when completing immigration procedures, such as greatly reduced wait times. Applying for ESTA in advance is recommended for travelers visiting Guam and Saipan during busy periods such as summer vacation and the Japanese New Year’s holidays, especially those traveling with small children.

Key points on traveling to Guam and Saipan

Since the establishment of the Guam-Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Visa Waiver Program (Guam-CNMI VWP) in November 2009, it has been possible to stay in Guam and Saipan for up to 45 days even without an ESTA or a visa. Besides, if you have applied for ESTA, you will be allowed to stay for up to 90 days. However, obtaining a visa, not ESTA, is required for those planning to work or to engage in business in Guam or Saipan for which wages or other compensation occurs.

Visa expiration

While as noted above ESTA expires in two years, a visa expires in three months. After obtaining a visa, you need to complete immigration screening in your own country for re-entry before it expires. In general, a visa is valid for only one entry, therefore you will need to apply for another visa if you plan to return to the U.S. again or to travel to another country after departing from the U.S. After you obtain a visa, it will expire in three months, and this expiration date cannot be extended. Travelers planning to visit the U.S. multiple times during the course of the year or planning to do business that involves local employment should consider obtaining a visa instead of ESTA.

Travelers who require visas

Travelers visiting the U.S., including Guam, Saipan, and Hawaii, for purposes such as employment or studying abroad require visas, not ESTA. In addition, those with a history of arrest for involvement in a serious incident, currently involved in serious litigation, or those with serious diseases, should consider applying for a visa, because it might be difficult for such travelers to obtain ESTA travel authorization. You still may apply for a visa if you have applied for ESTA and have been denied travel authorization. However, the decision on whether or not to permit travel to the U.S. on a visa will be made by a consulate in your country. In addition, generally a visa will expire three months after it has been issued, so be sure that you can complete immigration screening for travel to and from your destination before this expiration date. As with the ESTA expiration date, be sure to check the expiration date for travel when obtaining a visa as well.
