10 amazing fall foliage cruises you can take up the Hudson River this fall
Including brunch cruises with live music
You don't need a car to see peak fall foliage in New York—you can take a boat! A number of NYC leaf-peeping boat cruises leave right from Manhattan and sail up the Hudson River, delivering your autumn dreams of gorgeous changing leaves.
RECOMMENDED: Where to see fall foliage in NYC
This October, we took the Circle Line: Bear Mountain Full-Day Cruise , which as the name suggests, took us 50 miles north from Pier 83 to Bear Mountain and gave us three hours to hike trails and visit museums and its animal refuge before setting back down the river. It was a wonderful opportunity to escape the city sans car and train for the day and get some fresh air. Better yet, the cruise celebrates Oktoberfest with bratwurst, pork schnitzel, German potato salad, Prop & Peller Bavarian pretzels, and Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer and Warsteiner lager and a live Oompa band. It was a blast to get in party mode while anticipating our hike, seeing the beauty of the Palisades and Hudson Valley, listening to the captain point out landmarks and then relaxing on the way back home to NYC. The cruise goes on Saturdays and Sundays through October 31 and begins at $69 per person, which is really worth it.
Here are some other fall foliage cruises you should consider this autumn:
Seastreak: NYC Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise
Leaving from West 39th Street at 11:30am, this three-and-a-half-hour cruise takes you through Sandy Hook Bay, under the Verrazano Bridge, and along New York Harbor. You'll also see the shores of Hastings-on-the-Hudson, Tarrytown, Ossining, Croton Point, Haverstraw and Stony Point and get as far north as West Point. A buffet brunch is served while on deck with apple salad, tortellini salad, fingerling potato salad with haricot vert, butternut squash bisque, smoked salmon, flank steak, southwestern grilled chicken with mango salsa, and assorted pastries. This cruise is also narrated so you'll learn all about the sites you pass along the way. The cruise is offered Saturdays and Sundays through October 31. Tickets are $119 per person.
Classic Harbor Line's Fall Foliage Cruises & Sails
Don’t have a full day to spend admiring the changing colors? Reserve a seat on the brunch cruise with Classic Harbor Line from Pier 62 for a shorter route, leaving just enough time for you to admire the gold, red and russet-hued leaves of the Palisades. From October 15 to November 14, these two-and-a-half-hour cruises offer the perfect trip up the Hudson:
- Manhattan II : Grand Palisade Fall Foliage Cruise ($88-$106 per adult and $64 per child 3-14)
- Full Moon: Fall Foliage Cruise on Full Moon from Chelsea Piers ($88-$106/adult and $64/child 3-14)
- Kingston : Fall Foliage Cruise aboard Kingston ($88-106/adult and $64/child 3-14)
- Adirondack : Fall Foliage Schooner Sail (3.5 hours; $88-106/adult, $64/child 5-14)
We suggest heading out on a weekend brunch cruise, which comes with a three-course prix fixe menu (includes New York bakery pastries, salmon and lox, chef’s autumn salad with roasted vegetables, oven-roasted ham and more) inside the glass observatory of the Yacht Manhattan and Manhattan II across two-and-a-half hours. It takes off on Saturdays and Sundays and tickets are $124-142 per adult and $72 per child 3-14.
The top-rated, two-hour Fall Foliage Luncheon Cruise on Fridays and Saturdays has a multi-course menu including homemade soups such as a spice roasted butternut squash soup or a cauliflower soup topped with prosciutto and Manchego cheese. A roasted pumpkin and candied walnut salad with Chef’s maple vinaigrette, and assorted tea sandwiches are also in rotation on the menu. Each booking group is seated at a private table separated by clear partitions, with the option to open sliding glass windows throughout the vessel. Tickets are $96-132 per adult and $72 per child 3-14.
Your ticket to a Classic Harbor Line trip also includes an autumnal spiked hot cocoa, as well as a well-curated selection of beer, wine, champagne, and soft drinks.
City Cruises by Hornblower New York Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise
Head out from Pier 61 on the Bateaux New York Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise on October 20 or on the New York Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise Saturdays through October (October 16 and 23) for a three-hour cruise up the Hudson River with a freshly prepared buffet (jumbo shrimp cocktail starter, salad, honey sesame chicken, oven-roasted flounder, baked ziti and more), paired with seasonal cocktails, onboard entertainment with a live DJ, interactive games, a rooftop lounge and unlimited coffee and tea. Tickets for the cruise are $78.90 or $103.90 per person for a window table and $99.85 or $129.85 per person for the Bateaux cruise.
Majestic Harbor Cruises Fall Foliage Lunch Cruise
You’ve got to go across the river to Weehawken, New Jersey to board Majestic Harbor Cruises’ three-hour leaf-peeping cruise. But if you’re looking for an Instagram-worthy day party, this is the option for you. A DJ will be spinning live music as you snack on a buffet lunch (featuring salad, penne rigate, baked tilapia, and chicken Francaise) while voyaging north to those picturesque cliffs at the Palisades. Wine and cocktails from the cash bar only make the views sweeter. Tickets start at $59 per adult and $29.50 per child.
And if you really want to ball out this fall, you might want to check out even more autumnal fun like a Hudson Valley leaf peeping tour by helicopter or a trip to one of these best fall day trips .

A BIG THANK YOU to Captain Mary Pat and her crew for a wonderful trip on the Hudson River. Our High School reunion trip was perfect. Everyone one had a great time. Also, thank you for allowing us to bring food onboard!
What a wonderful excursion! Captain Mary Pat (who also owns the boat) gave us a beautiful tour of the Hudson from Peekskill to West Point. Snacks and drinks were available for purchase at a super reasonable price!
I finally was able to get my family to go on this boat with me which Iv'e been wanting to do since I saw it always dock at the riverfront years ago. I took my family and Nan on the boat last night for my parent's anniversary. Of course it just happened to be the first evening in October that managed to drop down to 50 or below but we stuck it out! I bought the amazon local deal back in May or June and sadly it would have been much nicer had we used it in Aug or Sept but hey, it is what it is. The captain Mary Pat is amazing and made us feel safe and very comfortable and even gave some commentary about the river and surrounding Peekskill, Bear Mountain, Iona Island-- plus! It was very windy and since it was a chilly night already the breeze coming off the water made it feel like it dropped another ten degrees. She took the boat south as if we were going towards the city but just went in a wide turn to take us up toward bear mountain and under the bridge by Manitou. On board, you get a complimentary drink of hot chocolate or cider and they also have soda, water, beer wine and chips for sale if you didn't bring anything. (You can bring your own snack and non-alc drinks as well.) The boat isn't very large but big enough to hold around 30-40 ppl and it was about half full. She offered blankets to everyone too which was a great touch. I would say my only recommendation would be to get small heaters and are safe around water (if thats possible) and children (don't get too hot) and maybe put them on the floor so that your feet could try and keep warm. Otherwise besides being a bit chilled it was a great hour and a half boat tour and next year I would definitely come back with friends during the summer to experience a nice sunset or even do an afternoon 3 hour day tour :) Oh and a side note to parents who think its okay to let your three wild young boys run amuck on the boat while you ignore them.... I'm throwing any rogue, irritating kids overboard next time. It's not cool to the captain, crew or passengers that irresponsible parents can't keep their children under wraps. I would def approve if the Captain only let kids 10 and over on board. One vote from me!!
What a fabulous, reasonably priced way to travel up the Hudson River and learn a little history along the way. We had a rainy day, but the boat is covered, so it wasn't a huge problem. The haze actually gave the mountains a beautiful painterly feel. Loved the 90 minute ride from Peekskill up passed the Bear Mountain Bridge and West Point. Would definitely do this trip again in the fall during peak leaf season.
Terrific modest sized and even when full plenty of well considered space for all - and so well run! Relaxing cruises with everything available and do many options to choose from. Great to see business thriving for them!
I went for a sunset cruise with meetup group. It was beautiful and relaxing. The price was reasonable. Great captain and super friendly staffs. I even used the restroom and was surprisingly how clean it was. I had a great time and thanks to the superb team.
We had a wonderful time. The captain and crew were so nice. Very accommodating and knowledgeable. The boat was very comfortable. Beer was ice cold and reasonably priced. The scenery is beautiful. We had perfect weather. Going to do a fall foliage tour. Great price for a great day. Highly recommend.
We heard about this cruise from close friends and had the pleasure of booking easily online and enjoying a wonderful evening with perfect weather. The sunset was beautiful and the cruise was smooth. It's short enough to enjoy light snacks and beverages either before or after dinner. Captain and staff were pleasant and courteous, and ticket booth was friendly and accommodating. We are already planning on another leisurely night out that will include another cruise with them.
This was a great tour. It was right off the Peekskill metro north station, which is convenient since I live in the city. The station/dock itself is in a very scenic part of town. I took the 3 hour hudson valley tour and it was phenomenal. The captain was in the coast guard and gave a very informative, detailed tour as we sailed towards Bear Mountain, West Point, Cold Spring and back. The boat ride was smooth and the crew was very friendly. I will definitely consider them again, but for the sunset cruise. They have food on board, and you can bring your own food as well if you desire. The snacks are all reasonably priced. The MTA offers a getaway package for this tour. It's called Evening Star Hudson River cruise, you have to call and reserve your spot on the cruise first, then book the package at Grand Central/125th St. There are signs at Peekskill station that direct you to the boat. The total cost for roundtrip rail and cruise was $43 from Grand Central, which is quite reasonable! I highly recommend taking this package for an ideal weekend or weekday day trip.
Great experience. Polite staff. Highly recommend. Super affordable. Not a bad seat on the entire boat.

5 best fall foliage cruises in New England, Canada and beyond
If your social media feeds are blowing up with beautiful pictures of fall foliage, you're likely feeling the urge to set out on your own leaf-peeping trip. Sure, you could plan an epic road trip, complete with traffic jams and overpriced, overcrowded tourist traps. Or, you could take a fall foliage cruise.
From a cruise ship, you can enjoy the autumnal hues of the Canada and New England coastline as you sail between northeastern U.S. homeports like New York and Boston and Canada's Montreal or Quebec City. Book shore excursions for a more relaxing day out; the bus driver will navigate the traffic along tree-lined byways to scenic vistas, and your mealtimes will be pre-arranged (or held on board your ship's multiple dining venues).
If you'd rather explore fall's colors outside of the Northeast, a few cruise lines will take you to fall foliage destinations in other parts of the U.S., too.
For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
It's likely too late to arrange a 2023 Canada and New England cruise, but channel your FOMO and book your 2024 getaway so next year you can be the one inspiring jealousy with your gorgeous scenic photography. Here, we present the five best fall foliage cruises you should consider in New England, Canada and beyond.
7-day Canada and New England Discovery cruise on Holland America
Holland America 's 1,964-passenger Zuiderdam is a delightfully midsize ship, so you don't have to worry about crowds as you sail between Boston and Quebec City. The ship starts sailing this route in late August, but for the best leaf peeping you'll want to book one of the two October departures.
Ports of call include Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Portland or Bar Harbor, Maine. Take your pick of scenic drives or strolls through gardens or along hiking paths, camera at the ready. On board, spend your evenings rocking out to live music or enjoying a leisurely meal of steak or seafood at the Pinnacle Grill.
Best for: Holland America attracts mainly retirees and couples who appreciate the line's focus on fine dining and live performances. Zuiderdam's itinerary is ideal for anyone who doesn't mind flying in and out of different cities in order to travel farther north into Canada than the one-way sailings.

7-day Canada and New England cruise on Princess Cruises
For an easy round-trip New York cruise that leans more into New England than Canada, consider Princess Cruises ' weeklong October sailings on the 3,660-passenger Enchanted Princess. Choose from itineraries with four or five ports, including Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Bar Harbor; Halifax; and (only on certain sailings) Saint John, New Brunswick.
If seascapes are your thing, don't miss the beautiful coastal landscape by the Bay of Fundy (from Saint John) or Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia. Head to the hills in Bar Harbor for elevated views or escape to sea with a harbor cruise from Newport.
Best for: Princess Cruises also attracts mature couples and lovers of classic cruising, but the 2019-debuted Enchanted Princess is much larger and bigger than Holland America's Zuiderdam. Kick back with the line's signature Movies Under the Stars (complete with blankets for fall nights in New England) or enjoy multiple specialty restaurants devoted to Italian specialties, steakhouse fare and seafood. Bundle up for a romantic breakfast on your balcony while the colorful coastline passes by.
Related: The best time for a Canada and New England cruise
7-night Canada cruise on Royal Caribbean
Combine an easy Boston round-trip sailing with a fall foliage cruise focused more on Canadian than New England ports with Royal Caribbean 's seven-night voyages on the 1,992-passenger Grandeur of the Seas, setting sail throughout October 2024. Most itineraries call in Portland, Maine; Saint John; Sydney; and Halifax.
Grandeur of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean's older and smaller ships, so don't go in expecting a humongous megaship with wild top-deck amenities (a good thing or not, depending on your style). You'll still find plenty of dining options (including sushi and teppanyaki hijinks at Izumi), the line's signature circular Viking Crown Lounge and – perfect for fall weather — an indoor, adults-only solarium.
Best for: Royal Caribbean fans seeking a midsize ship experience with fewer children on board should book this cruise. Anyone looking for a round-trip cruise to Canada that doesn't require a passport will appreciate the convenient Boston departure port (with plenty of beautiful fall foliage on its own) and three ports calls in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

7-night Puget Sound and San Juan Islands cruise on American Cruise Lines
Canada and New England aren't the only regions of the U.S. known for their fall foliage. American Cruise Lines offers several small-ship sailings in October to other leaf-peeping regions, including the Hudson River Valley, the Upper Mississippi and the Chesapeake Bay.
But for something completely different, why not try the line's seven-night Puget Sound and San Juan Islands cruise, round-trip from Seattle on the 90-passenger American Spirit and 170-passenger American Constellation?
Your itinerary will take you to Anacortes, Friday Harbor, Port Angeles (gateway to Victoria, British Columbia, and Olympic National Park), Port Townsend and Poulsbo, Washington, with a day spent cruising around the San Juan Islands. Take advantage of the Fidalgo Island walking trails near Anacortes and don't miss the photogenic Deception Pass nearby. Gaze at the Olympic and Cascade mountains in their fall glory and enjoy the fall weather in historic waterfront towns.
Best for: Travelers looking for a different destination for their fall foliage cruise, but also cruisers who prioritize time on shore over time on the ship. American Cruise Lines' ships are tiny, just four to six decks, with amenities limited to a restaurant, a couple of lounges, small fitness areas and sun deck, perhaps with a putting green. Be prepared to entertain yourself in the evenings — or go to bed early so you're energized for a full day in port nearly every day. Also, know that these ships generally draw an older, retiree crowd.
12-day Canada and New England Fall Foliage cruise on Seabourn
Smaller ships can visit more off-the-beaten-path ports than their big-ship counterparts. Seabourn 's 458-passenger Seabourn Quest sails 12-day cruises between New York and Montreal, stopping in Trois-Rivieres and Saguenay, Quebec, with scenic cruising along the Saguenay Fjord. The ship also visits Quebec City, Charlottetown, Halifax, Boston and Provincetown, Massachusetts.
This is also one of the best fall foliage cruises if you're looking for an all-inclusive voyage in luxurious surroundings. On Seabourn Quest, every cabin is a suite with a view (not to mention a walk-in closet and spacious bathroom with tub). You can enjoy gourmet cuisine by Thomas Keller, complimentary wine and cocktails, and a friendly crew that will go above and beyond for you.
Best for: Luxury lovers who wish to be pampered on their leaf-peeping vacation will enjoy this nearly two-week cruise around Canada and New England. The extended itinerary features several days at sea to enjoy the ship's spa or delicious afternoon tea service, as well as some lesser-visited ports and an overnight in Halifax. It's ideal for travelers who want to make the most of their fall Northeast trip.
Bottom line
You might be surprised how much choice you have for late-September and October fall foliage cruises. In addition to Seabourn, all the major luxury cruise lines dedicate a few cruises to this region — including such lines as Silversea Cruises , Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Windstar Cruises , Oceania Cruises and Crystal . Big ships like NCL's Norwegian Breakaway also get into the leaf-peeping action.
Here, we've picked the best fall foliage cruises for different itinerary configurations and ship styles. They might be our favorites, but only you know which combination of ports and onboard experience is the perfect match for your travel style.

Take a sunset cruise on the Hudson, ride the Pumpkin Express: Offbeat ways to view fall
Sometimes a quiet walk in the woods just won't cut it when it comes to fall leaf peeping. For those looking for a little something extra, there are zipline and hot air balloon rides, canoe trips and more. Check out some off-beat options within a car ride of the Hudson Valley:
Catch the Pumpkin Express
The Catskill Mountain Railroad has fun train rides for the whole family in the historic Stockade District of Kingston. Take a Fall Flier, or Pumpkin Express ride; this one lets passengers, who are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes, select their own pumpkin to take home to decorate.

You say you want a revolution?
Hop on the Revolution Rail Company's open rail bikes and pedal 6 miles along an abandoned railroad track in the Adirondacks. Each tour, lead by a guide, takes about two hours, start to finish, and passes through some spectacular forest scenery, along the banks of the Hudson River and then over the river on a trestle bridge. Closes Oct. 27.

As you climb, there are informational placards that tell you what you're seeing and some history. It is open seasonally, through November.

Try a zipline
Why not take in the gorgeous treeline from a zipline? Hunter Mountain is known as skiing mecca, but before the snow falls, take in the scenery from the ziplines at Canopy Tours on the Mountain. There are three family-friendly adventures: The SkyRider, Mid Mountain Canopy Tour and the Adventure Tower.

Details: Launch site is at the south end of the park. 6773 Halvorsen Road, Portageville, www.balloonsoverletchworth.com
Check out a covered bridge

Details: Located off Country Road 179 on Town Road 39 (Covered Bride Road) Rockland, New York. There is no admission fee. Open daily May through October; 8 a.m.-dusk. http://sullivanny.us/Depart ments/ParksRecreation/ LivingstonManor

‘Hacks’ Is at the Peak of Its Powers in a Confident Season 3: TV Review

- Colin Farrell’s ‘Sugar’ Is a Clumsy, Cliché L.A. Noir With a Baffling Twist: TV Review 4 weeks ago
At the end of its second season, “ Hacks ” seemed to have written itself into a corner. On the heels of a hit special, veteran stand-up Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) fired Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), the young writer whose perspective helped push Deborah out of a yearslong creative rut. While harsh, the move was uncharacteristically selfless on Deborah’s part, cutting Ava and her valuable advice loose in an act of tough love. But even as forcing Ava to step out of her shadow showed Deborah’s growth, it also broke up the professional partnership that helped define the Max comedy and propel “Hacks” to acclaim.
Popular on Variety
Deborah’s special was built around a more vulnerable and emotionally honest take on her divorce, a messy split in which her marriage quite literally went up in flames. (She used to joke that she burned down her ex-husband’s house after he left her for her own sister; in reality, the blaze was a dryer fire.) But that trauma led to an even deeper wound: Deborah losing the late night show that marked the biggest opportunity of her career. In the world of “Hacks,” as in our own, no woman has ever helmed a major broadcast talk show in the evening hours; Deborah has many inspirations, but the most obvious is Joan Rivers, whose short and ill-fated run on Fox made for a similarly lasting scar. A chance to right this past wrong, combined with a chance encounter between the ex-collaborators at Montreal’s Just for Laughs festival, forms the spine of Season 3.
Like many workplace-set series, “Hacks” is not shy about the parallels between romantic and professional relationships. When Ava and Deborah first exchange pleasantries in an elevator, it’s with all the strained formality of two people trying to pretend they don’t know each other’s sore spots and secrets. (Only Deborah snarking on Ava’s appearance thaws the ice. She does dress like she’s about to have lunch on a steel girder!) And when the emotional dam finally breaks, Ava and Deborah start giddily texting like infatuated teens — relapsing into codependency like the last year never happened. When Ava agrees to return to Vegas during her main gig’s hiatus to help Deborah workshop material, her emotional backslide is complete.
In reverting to its status quo, “Hacks” could risk giving into what’s comfortable over what’s difficult, if rewarding. Except the show is acutely aware that this is precisely what Deborah and Ava are doing themselves, much to the chagrin of their loved ones. “You’re always gonna be working for her,” Ava’s girlfriend argues of their sometimes-toxic dynamic, while Deborah’s daughter DJ (Kaitlin Olson) is more empathetic toward her mother’s self-absorption: “I thought you were a narcissist, but you’re actually an addict — like me!” In this slightly more evolved version of the Deborah-Ava relationship, where Ava has some clout of her own and Deborah has learned to be a little more receptive to feedback, “Hacks” pulls off the trick of having it both ways. There’s a settled rhythm that allows for comfort TV staples like major guest stars and a Christmas episode, but also the constant, underlying certainty that the other shoe is eventually bound to drop.
If the last season finale inspired speculation “Hacks” might be quitting while it’s ahead, there’s no such danger Season 3’s will do the same. Quite the opposite, in fact: this ending suggests the show is just getting started, with plenty more to mine in how Deborah and Ava are affecting one another — not always in a positive sense. “Hacks” has its fun, with resplendent shots of Deborah’s warehouse-sized archival closet and potshots at the modern entertainment industry. (Looking for side work, Ava debates signing onto “a procedural based on ‘Operation.’”) The show still resists the impulse to lean purely into aspiration or empowerment, as strong a sign of its longevity as any. Both Deborah and Ava are often unpleasant people. That’s exactly why they’re such a pleasure to watch.
The first two episodes of “Hacks” Season 3 will premiere on Max on Thursday, May 2, with remaining episodes airing weekly in pairs on Thursdays.
