Campo Sasso marks our latest venture and business endeavor. This charming establishment is an old farmhouse situated in the picturesque Chianti region of Tuscany. After undergoing a splendid renovation, it is set to open its doors as a Food and Wine Retreat in 2024.

The farmhouse boasts three ensuite bathrooms, spacious living areas, and a delightful garden enveloped by olive trees, vines, and lush forest.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept most major credit cards and payment forms. Please see the bottom of our website for the payment types accepted.

Why choose a private tour?

Most of our customers enjoy having the benefits of a private tour. You have your own guide. You can have rest stops when you like. We can tailor the tour to suit your needs and preferences. We always choose the best guide for your needs, whether you are a family, an art school, or a company doing an incentive event.

Are the tours kid friendly?

All our tours except our Sex, Drugs and Renaissance tour are kid friendly. When doing a private tour with us, you have your own guide, so tell us in the notes of the booking the ages of your kids and we will tailor the tour and choose a guide that’s great for kids for you. We also have 4 special kids’ tours in Florence.

What should I bring on my tour?

No large bags or backpacks in museums, in churches shoulders and knees must be covered so bring a scarf to cover your shoulders. IF it’s a walking, bicycle or a countryside tour make sure to bring comfortable shoes. It’s important for everyone to bring their ID

student or children for the museum

Is the tour in English?

All tours are conducted in English only unless otherwise noted or requested. Other languages available for all private tours on request.

Arrival times?

We recommend arriving 15 minutes before departure time for all tours and services

Do you offer private tours?

We are offering mainly Private and some Semi-private tours at the moment. We do not offer many semi private small group tours anymore due to the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. The difference between Private and Semi-private is that the private tours are fully private tours with your own guide and the Semi-private are small shared group tours where individuals can join others.

What can I wear in an Italian church?

Knees and shoulders must be covered to enter the churches! Travelling in hot weather? Don’t worry, you can drape a shawl over your shoulders.

Is it appropriate to tip your guides?

If you enjoyed your tour and would like to give your guide a token of appreciation, tips are happily accepted. When asked, the office staff recommends whatever amount you feel comfortable with giving.

My two friends and I had an amazing time. Our tour guide Paul was knowledgeable and very down to earth which made the tour more enjoyable. Does get hot while standing in the vineyard. One thing to remember is to pack a swimsuit for the opportunity to go for a swim which my friends and I forgot. Overall a great time would definitely recommend!

This was truly a fun experience! Our guide took us to a beautiful Tuscan Villa where we met the owner of the villa/micro winery. After giving us a full description about the process of making wine, they invited us to pick the grapes ourselves. Then with those grapes, we stomped them into mush! Afterwards, we were invited for a wine tasting and lunch of delicious pasta. we talked with our guide about the area and learned a lot. Then we had a tour of the villa which was absolutely breathtaking. Would 100% recommend this tour! Mauritzio led us through Rome, showing us the rich history of the city and enduring the scorching heat. He painted a cohesive picture of how the colosseum used to operate and the importance the Vatican held and continues to hold today. All of our tours were private and very different from one another. Each guide was personable, knowledgeable and a joy to be around. Martina also assisted with many restaurant reservations and recommendations for us in both cities, which we were extremely satisfied with. HOW IS WINE MADE?

A “vendemmia” (Italian for grape harvest) is one of the most fascinating experiences you can enjoy in Tuscany during the harvest season. It is a wonderful way to learn a lot about the local wine & food traditions but also about the local culture. Those who tried it report that the atmosphere in a working winery is something definitely unique ! You can participate to a vendemmia on a charming wine estate, see the process of wine making during the most thrilling operational phases and taste some excellent local wines served with lunch .

An experience in the vineyards with the harvesters Our grape harvest experience takes place in the morning for about two hours (timing is flexible). You meet our local guide and have an introduction to the world of vineyards before acting! The guide gives you a lot of information about the plants and the cultivation of the vines as well as the weather conditions of the seasons and how they affect the fruits. Then you get your scissors and your crates and you start collecting grapes assisted by your guide and the other winemakers around.

The winery during the “fermentation mode” After collecting some grapes you will follow your guide and the tractor to the operational areas in the winery, where you see all the machinery involved in the process, to understand the wine-making process in detail. From the destemming machine to the fermentation casks you will learn in detail how the grape juice is transformed into wine. Finally, you rest in the tasting room of the property and taste some great wines produced by the winery, served along with lunch.

If you visit Tuscany right at the beginning of the harvesting season you may coincide with the grape stomping. This is a habit in one of our wineries in the very first day of the vendemmia to facilitate the fermentation of the grape juice. Hopefully you will coincide with it!

NOTE This activity is strongly related to weather conditions, so there might be changes to the date or to the itinerary. This will be evaluated closer to the date. An obligatory insurance for the day must be issued.

Tuscan white wine

Tuscan white wines are often based on a typical grape called Vermentino, which provides strong minerality and freshness to the wines made with it. Other very common grapes for white wines in Tuscany are Trebbiano and Malvasia.

Tuscan red wine

The Tuscan soil provides a wide variety of red wines, from easy-to-drink young table wines to full-body and robust riservas. Tuscan red wines are often based on Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo or Colorino grapes and sometimes on international grapes like Merlot, Cabernet or Syrah.

Tuscan extra virgin olive oil

The best extra virgin olive oil is made with fresh Tuscan olives immediately squeezed after the harvest at an oil mill. The most common olives for Tuscan olive oil are frantoio, leccino, frantoio and madremignola.

A plate of mixed Tuscan cold meats: rigatino (a kind of bacon), Tuscan salami (a regular salami with large fat bits), finocchiona (a salami with fennel seeds) and arista (a pork loin long baked and seasoned with rosemary and other herbs).

Cantuccini biscuits in Tuscany are one of the most common desserts. They are made of sugar, butter and eggs and they are refined with almonds. In some versions they have other nuts or chocolate.

In our tour we like showing you places off the beaten track and introducing you to Tuscan people with their personal stories, careers and characters. Ciao a tutti! It’s Massimo here. I’m the “first one” of the friends of Arianna in order of appearance, as we first met me when we were… ehm … at the high school! Well, the first “activities” we arranged together were those many teenagers do, like going to rock concerts (long live Metallica!), barbecuing, drinking inexpensive wine, mainly with no understanding of it. In over 25 years we became more serious adults; so serious that we finished university together and we then decided to start a business from scratch, back in 2007, in an area where nothing like this existed before. I am a natural born teacher, as I’ve always liked sharing knowledge on the beauties of the world with other people. When I started sharing the wisdom of the local cuisine with visitors to Tuscany or showing them the rooted traditions behind a wheel of local pecorino cheese, I realized how fantastic my job is. In fact I discovered that being a wine & food guide is a sophisticated way of being a good teacher, so I can’t help but love it! In the A&F team I’m the multi-language guide or assistant in all activities we offer, from cooking classes, to wine & food tours, from Italian language classes to vespa tours. In the low season I deal with the website development and content management. As I am very curious, I spend all my free time travelling all over the world and of course going on learning as much as I can: over the last few years I took part in several seminaries on extra virgin olive oil, I started a three-year course to become a sommelier, I experienced a professional training to become gelato maker and I decided to never give up in learning the Arabic language. And that's me, Arianna. When I was a student at the univeristy together with Massimo, we had a dream. We knew already we wanted somehow to spread our culture, but we didn't know in which ways yet. And we knew we needed to first get more educated ourselves, to go deeper in what for us belonged to our everyday life, before making it avaiable to the others. We made a lot of researches, made many contacts, and we finally found a good way to become ambassadors of the Tuscan culture, taditions and lifestyle. Yes, I admit it, the power that moved everything was my passion for food! For good food, and in particular for the good food of my mamma and my nonna, hehehh! It was learning from them that I started thinking that I couldn't miss the opportunity to share all I knew with others. It couldn't be different because here where we live, food IS culture! And so we made up a name for our project, our future business, that had to give this message: spend time with us, your Tuscan friends and you'll feel like in a family and you'll experience Tuscany in a very authentic way. So the name Arianna & Friends was picked as the best choice. Personally, I love planning, making people happy, organizing, having crazy ideas .. so crazy that sometimes Massimo needs to bring me down to earth! I like making sure that people are more than satisfied when they come back home. Even though the region of San Gimignano overlaps a small part of the Sienese Chianti, the most important characteristic grape is Vernaccia di San Gimignano. Sangiovese remains the second most grown grape in the area. 

The white Vernaccia di San Gimignano is Tuscany's only DOCG white wine. Most of it is fresh and bottled in spring after harvest, but also a Riserva is made, oak-aged and fuller-bodied, worthy of aging. 

The area also makes San Gimignano DOC, an appellation that allows for a little bit of everything, and, of course, Chianti.

After breakfast on day two of your Tuscany wine holiday, you will be met at the hotel by an English-speaking specialist wine driver/guide, who will accompany you on a full day Chianti wine tour in an executive level vehicle (Mercedes E Class or equivalent). The enticing blend of history, culture and gastronomy starts right away, as you drive along the hilltops of the “Black Rooster” road, the ancient Chiantigiana road, which is the Chianti wine road. During your Tuscany wine holiday, your guide will tell you about the legend of the Florentine black rooster and how it differs to the Sienese white one.

You will firstly be welcomed as the guests of the prestigious Antinori winery for a VIP experience. Here, you will taken on a full behind-the-scenes tour of the estate and cellars, seeing first-hand the individual stages of the production process and your visit will conclude with tastings of seven of Antinori’s most celebrated wines, including Cervaro della Sala, Pian delle Vigne, Badia a Passignano and the famous Tignanello. The tasting will take place in the most exclusive part of the cellars, the intimate Bottaia room. Lunch will then be served in Antinori’s restaurant, which is located on the scenic rooftop terrace. The four day break includes a further two tours and tastings on day three, at your selected wineries in Brunello di Montalcino. You will again be met at your hotel by your private luxury Mercedes S Class vehicle and English-speaking driver/guide. During the tour, you will drive through the quintessential Tuscan countryside. Cypress-lined narrow roads and medieval hilltop wine villages are classic images of the region, and your guide will make various stops for you to take some beautiful photos. You will have free time for lunch in the town of Montalcino, located on a charming hill. The splendid St Antimo abbey is a must-see attraction. In the evening, a five course dinner with wines, water and coffee will be served in the hotel’s intimate double Michelin-starred restaurant.

Sober Travelers Find Something to Savor in Wine Country

Mocktail trails, olive oil tours and elevated dining experiences are among the many ways the renowned wine-producing areas of Sonoma, Mendoza and Tuscany are appealing to sober or sober-curious travelers.

Amy Snook knows more about wine than your average traveler. Originally from California, she now lives in the Douro Valley of Portugal, her partner works in the wine industry, and she has visited 47 countries, many of which have celebrated viticulture. But seven years ago, on a trip to Mendoza, a winemaking region in the foothills of Argentina’s Andes Mountains, she opted to abstain from drinking alcohol, a decision she would repeat in future travels.

“It’s such a long flight to Argentina, and I was only there for 10 days,” said Ms. Snook, 34, a publishing professional. “I’m aware of how alcohol affects me, and I chose to prioritize feeling amazing every day of the trip over dealing with a hangover.”

During her visit, Ms. Snook bicycled between vineyards, reveled in breathtaking scenery, relaxed with spa treatments and engaged with sommeliers and winemakers, coming away with a new appreciation for sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

“The obvious question when you tell someone that you aren’t drinking is, ‘Out of all the places you could go, why travel to wine country?’” she said. “But to me, it makes perfect sense because these regions offer all the perks of luxury travel — wellness amenities, beautiful landscapes and fine dining.”

With 41 percent of Americans seeking to reduce their alcohol intake, according to a consumer-sentiment study released in January by NCSolutions, Ms. Snook’s experience is part of a larger trend: the rise of sober-curious or mindful drinking. While sober travel is hardly a new concept, its popularity is surging to new heights — particularly among younger generations — and forcing a reckoning in the wine industry. The 2024 State of the U.S. Wine Industry report , an annual forecast of market conditions and trends written by the wine-business analyst Rob McMillan, found that 52 percent of consumers ages 21 to 34 believe that consuming alcohol, even in moderation, is bad for your health.

This trend is reshaping travel to world-class wine destinations like Sonoma County, in California, as well as Mendoza and Tuscany. Blessed with temperate climates, extended growing seasons, fertile soils, rich histories and breathtaking vistas, these renowned wine locales are expanding their offerings to attract drinkers and nondrinkers.

Here are some of the restaurants, tour groups and wineries in those regions that are reinventing the travel experience to be more inclusive of the sober-curious.

Dining in Sonoma

If wine is a true expression of the land, embodying the unique characteristics of its soil, weather and the meticulous craftsmanship of those who cultivate it, can you still forge that connection without drinking?

At Cyrus , a Michelin-starred fine dining destination in Geyserville , Calif., the answer is a resounding yes. Sonoma County, double the size of neighboring Napa, made conscious decisions to protect and diversify its land use, ensuring grapes as well as agricultural crops were grown. Douglas Keane, Cyrus’s owner and chef, highlights the local harvest by working with small farms and purveyors to source his ingredients. Crosnes — a Chinese artichoke — from Alexander Valley Vineyards gardens, yuzu and finger limes from the citrus grower David Levine, and cheesefrom Andante Dairy have all ended up on Cyrus’s menu.

Also on the menu: Kally , an alcohol-free wine alternative produced with housemade organic verjuice and sourced from Northern California. Served at more than 15 other Michelin-starred restaurants, Kally’s bottles include Early Chardonnay, which is crisp, bright and changes flavor and aroma as it moves across the palate, similar to a fine wine. A tart, vibrant Golden Sparkler has notes of jasmine and citrus, and a floral, fruity Rosé Sparkler offers hints of strawberry and hibiscus.

“Chefs and sommeliers are interested in having precise nonalcoholic pairings. Their food was created to be prepared with sophisticated drinks, not just sparkling water,” said Scott Mitic, who created the beverage along with his wife, Katie.

Customers, too, appreciate having a choice, he said, noting that many of Kally’s most loyal drinkers are wine enthusiasts. “This is not an abstinence movement; it is a moderation movement.”

Cyrus Schultz, the wine director and sommelier at Cyrus, aims to create drinks that make sober guests feel just as special, if not more, than those indulging in traditional wine pairings. His nonalcoholic creations include the Rosé Champagne, an effervescent blend of coconut, white sesame, cherry blossom and lime, and the Apple Martini, a sweet, herbaceous concoction of pink lady apple, fennel and mint olive oil.

“The intention is never to mimic alcohol products, but to construct the pairings similarly to how a chef looks at a menu — different textures, temperatures and flavor profiles,” Mr. Schultz said.

These efforts are not limited to one restaurant. Chris Vomvolakis, senior manager of consumer public relations at Sonoma County Tourism , said bars, restaurants and wineries across the region are recognizing that it’s not all about wine.

The town of Healdsburg recently created the Mocktail Trail , with eight participating restaurants, and Meadowcroft Wines in the town of Sonoma curated a flight of original zero-proof cocktails. David Messerli, Meadowcroft’s marketing and strategy director, said the winery encourages guests “to discern aromas, flavors and nuances, much like they would with wine.”

“For those opting out of alcohol, we felt there was more we could do,” he said. “People have various reasons for abstaining from alcohol, and no one should feel excluded because of it.”

Women-led luxury in Mendoza

Mendoza, renowned for its malbec wines and stunning Andean landscapes, is no stranger to luxury accouterments, but sober guests? That is a newer phenomenon. “We have definitely noticed an increase in guests seeking nonalcoholic travel options in recent years,” said Victoria Stiles, sales manager at Cavas Wine Lodge , a luxury 18-room hotel set amid a 55-acre vineyard.

At Cavas, wine may be the main attraction, but guests can book spa treatments using vine and grape-seed extracts, join yoga sessions on the private terrace overlooking the Andes and vineyards, and take full-day hiking excursions to Aconcagua Provincial Park, a rugged, mountainous destination that is home to Mount Aconcagua, South America’s highest peak.

Wild Terrains , a certified B-Corp travel company specializing in experiences for women, has planned three days of a 10-day Argentina tour to be sober-inclusive in Mendoza. Built around women-owned businesses, stops include boutique lodging at Entre Cielos , horseback riding in the Andean foothills, home-cooked asado at Estancia Los Chulengos and a private dining experience at Michelin-starred Zonda Cocina de Paisaje . The meal offers special mocktail pairings with distinct flavors like lemon verbena, beets and burro, an herb used to make digestive teas and infusions.

“In Mendoza, our trip centers on talented female winemakers who are pushing boundaries in a historically male-dominated industry,” said Lauren Bates, founder of Wild Terrains. “While these experiences include wine tastings, we want sober travelers to feel intentionally included even if they are skipping the wine tasting.”

Sofia Pescarmona, owner of the Bodega Lagarde vineyard and Zonda Cocina de Paisaje, said that while the restaurant experience aims to showcase their wine, nondrinkers will also appreciate it.

“We truly believe we can offer an elevated experience for those who don’t drink wine by highlighting other seasonal produce grown on our property,” she said.

Tasting olive oil in Tuscany

Wine tastings epitomize indulgence, especially immersed in the heart of Tuscany, when visitors can savor glass after glass of Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Salvatore Ferragamo Jr., chief executive of the Il Borro wine estate and grandson of the fashion house’s founder, encourages guests to find other ways to indulge.

“The olive harvests in the autumn produce the region’s spicy, piquant ‘green gold,’” said Mr. Ferragamo.

Il Borro, in Tuscany’s Valdarno, is a meticulously restored medieval village that includes 58 suites, three vacation villas, two restaurants, stables, working vineyards and olive groves. Olive oil production began in 1996, following the recovery of varieties like Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino that had long been neglected. Now, after touring some 80 acres of organic groves, guests can engage in a tasting experience of two distinct oils, one full-bodied with floral, fruity and grassy aromas, the other robust, peppery and dark.

Another option, Tuscan Organic Tours , offers immersive daylong experiences that delve into wine and oil but also other rich agricultural offerings. Delicious tours with private transportation highlight tastes and flavors that include Pecorino di Pienza, one of the most renowned Italian cheeses, saffron and fresh pastas. The tours include visits to organic farms, lunches, tastings, and opportunities to participate in cheese-making and saffron harvesting.
