The Shiva Linga placed at the centre of the pond is lit by the light and adds to the spiritual ambience of the place. 7. Bhadrakali Temple

Dedicated to Goddess Uma (an incarnation of Goddess Kali), Shree Bhadrakali Temple holds great religious and historical significance among the locals of Gokarna. Many mythological stories revolve around the origin of this temple. Some locals believe that When Ravana abandoned Goddess Uma, Lord Vishnu asked her to remain inside the temple.

According to other stories, the Trinity Gods- Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva created an incarnation of Goddess Kali to destroy a demon called Vetrasur. She was sent to Gokarna to protect the people in this town. Hence, the temple earned its name.

Bhadrakali Temple, built with humble architecture, is a part of the Mahabaleshwara Temple complex. At the entrance of the temple, you can witness two lion statues welcoming devotees inside. The temple’s humble architecture and tranquil atmosphere make it the perfect place to offer prayers and seek blessings. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the beautifully adorned idol of Goddess Kali, complete with weapons and a fierce gaze. Make sure to pay a visit to the Bhadrakali Temple on your next trip to Gokarna for an enriching and spiritual experience.

8. Small Hell Beach

If you're an adventure seeker looking to explore the lesser-known gems of India, then Small Hell Beach in Gokarna is definitely worth considering. Located between Paradise and Half Moon Beach, this small stretch of golden sand offers a peaceful and clean environment for travellers to relax and unwind.

As you might expect from its name, the beach is surrounded by rocky cliffs, including the famous Hell Cliff. While these cliffs offer stunning views, they can also be slippery, so be sure to exercise caution if you plan to explore them.

Despite its remote location, Small Hell Beach offers a range of activities for travellers. Whether you're looking to set up camp and enjoy a bonfire by the sea with friends or simply relax and take in the beauty of nature, this beach has something for everyone. 2 Days in Gokarna, Karnataka: Top Things to Do in Gokarna

Last updated on

Gokarna, a small village by the Arabian Sea in northern Karnataka, is a revered pilgrimage site for Shaivites and sees both domestic tourists and foreigners in search of spirituality and beach vacations. Spend 2 days in Gokarna for a taste of this small town. To find out about the top things to do in Gokarna, scroll down!

GOKARNA, KARNATAKA / INDIA

There are two sides to Gokarna: one, the pilgrimage side which devotees from around the country visit to offer prayers at the revered Atmalinga of the Mahabaleshwar Temple, and the other, the touristy side teeming with young Indians and western tourists looking for a quieter, more secluded alternative to Goa.

The sandy beaches of Gokarna are hidden beyond the folds of the lush Western Ghats. Trails of rich red soil thread through tropical jungles and meander over beaches and cliffs overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the Arabian Sea. Autorickshaws, your only mode of transport if you do not have a car, zap up and down the single strip of asphalt that winds through jungles and scrubland, past eateries and lodges, and runs into the little town with its clutch of temples, shops, and traditional settlements. There are not many things to do in Gokarna, and perhaps that is what draws travellers to Gokarna. Laze on the beaches, swim in the tropical waters, hike along the cliffs and beaches, explore the temple town, search the many mythological stories that this town is steeped in, and indulge in local meals and glorious sunsets: welcome to Gokarna.

WARNING! Gokarna has a documented drug problem. Be wary of peddlers who target unsuspecting tourists, especially Westerners, around town. Most beaches are patrolled by the local police who conduct random spot checks.

ETYMOLOGY OF GOKARNA : Gokarna literally means cow’s ( go ) ear ( karn ). It is believed that Shiva emerged from the ear of a cow here. The cow is a symbol of the earth and represents nourishment and sustenance. It is also possible that the name was derived from the ear-shaped confluence of the Gangavali and Aghanashini rivers.

2 Days in Gokarna: Itinerary

Day 1: beach trek, sunset from kudle beach, day 2: visit the mahabeshlwar temple, explore the town, how to reach gokarna, when to visit gokarna, where to stay in gokarna, where to eat in gokarna.

Booking your trip via the links on this page will earn us a small commission, at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support – Mohana & Aninda.

2 Days in Gokarna: Top Things to Do in Gokarna

AM // Beach Trek

The beach hike is perhaps the most exciting thing to do in Gokarna and whether you are spending 2 days in Gokarna or more, you must absolutely hike all or part of this route! The trail threads along the hillside and promises stellar views of the Arabian Sea. The palette— the lush greenery of the Western Ghats, the dusty brick-red soil, the black rocks that jut along the coast, the ochre sands, the cloud-flecked blue sky dipping into the azure waters— is mesmerizing.

From north to south, the primary beaches of Gokarna are the Gokarna main beach , Kudle beach , Om beach , Half-moon beach , Paradise beach , and Belekan beach . The trail that skirts the mountains and threads through jungles, up slippery rocks, and through gorgeous beaches lined with swaying coconut trees will take you all the way from Kudle beach to Paradise beach and onwards to Belekan beach. If you are interested, you can go all the way to Tadadi Port and then hire a boat to Nirvana beach on the other side of the Aganashini’s estuary and then finally back to where you are staying.

We did the stretch from Om beach to Half-moon beach one morning; we had attempted to trek all the way to Paradise beach but were unable to find the proper trail. It goes without saying that it helps to have a guide. Zostel, Gokarna organizes guides treks along this trail; check with them if they allow non-guests to join. The next day, we did the Om beach to Kudle beach stretch. The views are magnificent— sparkling blue-grey water skirts the monumental mountainside and melts into the bright blue horizon– but the tropical sun is unforgiving.

If you intend to do the whole route, start at dawn. Pack enough water and some snacks because the shacks on Om beach and Half-moon beach do not serve breakfast before 8:30-9 am. Wear trekking shoes with a good grip because you will have to navigate steep slopes and slippery rocks along the way. If you go all the way to Nirvana Beach, you can have lunch at one of the shacks there. Else, there are a few shacks on Half-moon beach and Belekan beach. On the way back to Kudle beach or Om beach, you might be able to spot dolphins near the lighthouse! We spotted a couple of them and the boatman mentioned that they are usually spotted in the morning and around sunset.

Paradise and Half-moon beaches are totally secluded and can be reached only by boat or hike.

PM // Sunset and Dinner at Kudle Beach

Camping is another top thing to do in Gokarna! If you are planning to camp, you have to book ahead with a team. If you are camping at Paradise or Half-moon beach, chances are your trek guide has organized dinner for you but if you are staying at Om beach, skip the overhyped restaurant of Namaste Café and head to Little Paradise Inn on Kudle Beach. Settle down with a bottle of chilled beer and watch the sunset. Then order dinner! We had the butter garlic calamari, a plate of falafels, and some spicy chilly chicken and each dish was delicious! Autos are available until 11 pm if you are lodging elsewhere.

AM // Temples of Gokarna | Laze

Start day two of your 2 days in Gokarna trip with a swim. Gokarna is increasingly becoming popular with domestic tourists— it has been a fixture on the neo-hippie map since Om beach with its characteristic Om-shaped outline spilled the secrecy of the region— and if you want to swim in peace, arrive early before the tourists and of course, the headache-inducing sun. Sunbeds are a rarity on all the beaches but if you are on Om beach, you can lounge under the broad leaves of sea-grape trees.

A visit to the revered Mahabaleshwar Temple which is known for the Atmalingam , is one of the many things to do in Gokarna. Head there after breakfast. There are many legends, such as this one, as to how the Atmalingam , atma means soul, came to reside here. Nearby is the Koti Teertha, a tank whose holy waters are said to absolve one of all sins.

John Fryer’s account of the Koti Teertha dates back to his travels in India in the 17th century. He writes, “ We were carried by the Tide of the People that bore that way out of this place, to a large oblong stone Tank, with Descents to go down all about it ; in the middle a neat Pagod supported on Four Marble Pillars ; here during this Festival at Evenings, are blazing a Lecque of Lamps. In this all of both Sexes Wash and Present Rice and Mony to the Brachmins; and the Fish which Swim here frequently receive their Benevolence, being so Tame you may catch them with your Hands; to be the death of one of these is considered piaculare “. Even the rath that he described can still be seen in Gokarna. He wrote, “ At the upper- end of the’ High-street were two great moving Pageants drawn on Wheels, two Stories high, with a Cupulo on the top, which was stuck round full of Streamers of Orient Colours .”

Note that if you are not Hindu, chances are that you won’t be allowed inside the temple premises. You can either explore the town— stop for a second breakfast of South-Indian style dosas and a glass of fresh pineapple juice— or practice your flânerie skills at a beach shack. The beaches— with their coconut and sea-grape trees, the bunches of bright red hibiscus unbothered by the heat, the cacophony of selfie-clicking tourists and children enthralled by the vastness of the Arabian sea, hawker stalls selling colourful knick-knacks and handicrafts (the kinds associated with hippies in Goa’s flea markets), the colourful boats bobbing in the cheerful heat, the stands of pineapple and tender coconuts— throb with life. You can often spot artists and yoga enthusiasts on the beach.

PM // Lunch at Fishland/Halfway Home, Sunset at Gokarna Main Beach

Our favorite thing to do in Gokarna was to try the local food! If seafood is your jam, head to Open House Fishland where a local family will treat you to Uttara Kannada-style seafood preparations. We had the Tori Rava Tava, Crab sukkha, and Kalwa (oyster) sukkha and everything was mouthwatering. Locals flock to this establishment during lunch hours; the fish thali here is very popular. Everything is reasonably priced and you can get local specialities like kane (ladyfish) and dodi (croaker).

For vegetarians, there is the amazing Halfway Home where for INR 150, you can get a local thali with rice, roti , papad , sambar , rasam , two curries, pickle, and a vegetable fry, a sweet, raita , and curd. Order a sweet lime soda on the side and you will never want to eat anywhere else! Everything is simply perfect.

After lunch, trod to Gokarna Main Beach where Chez Christophe with its sea-facing swings and irresistible desserts awaits you. Catch a quick nap, if you wish, on their low cushions and wake up to welcome the pink and fuchsia of the setting sun. For dinner, indulge in their French-inspired menu cooked with local ingredients. Then hike along the beach, for a kilometre or so, to the auto stand for a ride to your hotel.

Gokarna Quick Guide

BY AIR  // The nearest airport is the Dabolim Airport (140 km) in Goa. Taxis from the airport will bring you to Gokarna.

BY TRAIN  // The nearest railway station, Gokarna Road, has very little connectivity. Your best bets are Ankola (27 km) or Kumta (32 km). There are direct railway links from Madgaon (Goa),  Bangalore ,  Pune , Kochi, and Mumbai. Autorickshaws and public buses are available from the stations to Gokarna market.

BY ROAD  // Overnight buses, both sleepers and non-sleepers, are available from cities like Bangalore, Pune, and Hyderabad. You can book a trip on RedBus or AbhiBus.

Gokarna is an all-season destination but if you are wary of the tropical heat, avoid the summer. Winter sees a lot of tourists and you might have to book in advance as accommodations are often fully booked. Monsoon sees a lot of rain but the lush hillside is mesmerizing. Plan your trip depending on your list of things to do in Gokarna; for example, if you want to do a beach hike, it is best to choose milder weather.

Gokarna has a variety of accommodations catering to every budget.

We stayed at Namaste Cafe (one of the three properties owned by this group in Gokarna) on Om Beach and it was a lovely experience. Unlike Kudle Beach, where most of the accommodation options are located, Om Beach is quiet and not crowded. If Om Beach is completely booked, you can check Shantidham Cafe which also has good reviews. If you want to stay at Kudle Beach, check with the restaurant owners; most of them offer lodging. Zostel is a good bet if you are looking for hostels.

For a luxurious experience, there’s a CGH property, SwaSwara . CGH is known for being eco-friendly and sustainable and it is no different at Gokarna where they offer yoga and Ayurveda on a property overlooking Om Beach. You can also opt for Kahani Paradise , a boutique hotel housed in a holiday home owned by a British family, located in the hills above Paradise Beach.

If camping is your jam, check with travel companies like Thrillophilia who arrange tents and other facilities on Paradise Beach and elsewhere.

2 days in Gokarna gives you just enough time to explore the delicious local cuisine! Our top picks are Halfway Home (vegetarian), Fishland, Chez Christophe, Little Paradise Inn, and White Elephant. See  Best Places to Eat in Gokarna, Karnataka  for more.

2 days in Gokarna makes for the perfect weekend getaway. If you have more time, head to Murdeshwar or Karwar. Have you visited Gokarna? What are your favourite things to do in Gokarna?

So interesting that this is a pilgrimmage site! It looks like an interesting place to visit for a couple of days – thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Never heard of this place but it sounds interesting . Thanks for the detailed information.

Sounds lovely. Beautifully written. I was lost there for a moment in jungle rimmed sun baked sands dreaming of oceans and sunsets at delicious restaurants.

Thanks, Martin! It really is a lovely place.

beautiful photos and lovely description. I went only to om beach and Kudle beach onour trip to Karwar. Gokarna is charming.

Karwar is on our list! & so is Udupi. A drive along Karnataka’s coast would make for an awesome trip, won’t it?

Amazing post! I feel Gokarna as a place is still so unexplored and untouched.

My heart nearly dropped when I read the words butter garlic calamari. The food enough seems like a good reason to visit but that scenery?! I don’t know why we don’t see India marketed more as a beach destination this place looks heavenly and without the crowds of other asian beach destinations. Plus, I really like the idea of seeing cows on the beach, they are kinda cute huh?

Right? India has 7,516.6 km of coastline and some of the beaches are stunning. Beach No. 7, Radhanagar in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is regularly voted in the list of Asia’s best beaches! Hopefully, they’ll find more takers 🙂

Love India, I have not been to this part of the country but it looks and sounds beautiful. Also, I love it when cows just hang out basically wherever they want in India. Your photo with cows sitting in the shade on the beach cracks me up lol

Cows are everywhere in India, aren’t they? This trio was just lazing in the shade! They were kinda funny in their nonchalance.

I’ve never been to India but always fascinated by how much beauty there is to see! Beautiful photos and tips for the 2 days!

I’d love to try those crabs! Stunning photos; I’d love to visit!

Wow! This tiny village surrounded by picturesque location looks amazing. With such lush greenery, dense mountain, and white sandy beach, Gokarna is a perfect place for a family vacation.

There’s a strange kind of warmth and serenity blending perfectly with the hippie travel vibe. Like a glimpse of the Goa of a bygone era.

Grasslands in Gokarna

Doused in stories and anecdotes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, it’s a place of religious and mythological importance. There are several wonderful things to do in this rustic town of Gokarna. You can go trekking amidst palm strewn cliffs, or just spend some peaceful time in retrospection in temples. Gokarna has something to offer for everyone.

This Gokarna travel blog contains information about some of the best places to visit in Gokarna for a 2-day itinerary along with some suggestions from my personal experiences which could help you in planning your own trip to this peaceful paradise.

Where is Gokarna?

Kudle Beach, one of the best places to visit in Gokarna

Gokarna is located in the southern state of Karnataka in the Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district. It’s a coastal town along the Arabian Sea almost near Goa’s border. There are several ways in which you could reach Gokarna.

How to Visit Gokarna

Gokarna has a railway station a little away from the town. Unfortunately it does not have very good connectivity with most cities and towns in India.

From Bangalore, there are few Karwar bound trains that stop at Gokarna on the way. Karwar is around 60km from Gokarna. Time taken is approximately 15-16 hours.

There are two trains which ply between Mumbai and Gokarna and the journey takes around 12 hours. The boarding station in Mumbai is Lokamanya Tilak Terminus.

There are plenty of trains running between Goa and Gokarna and the journey takes about an hour and a half. The boarding station is Margao.

From the station, you can hire an auto to your hotel/hostel or city. Although it could be a pain to find one during the offseason, especially during early morning hours. But during the peak season, you’ll almost never have any difficulties finding an auto. You can also find local buses running a little away from the station to the town.

There’s another station in Ankola which is around 20 km away from Gokarna. And this is the preferred choice for most travelers when a direct train is not available. From Ankola you can either travel to Gokarna by a local bus or by hiring an auto or cab.

The nearest airport to Gokarna is Goa’s Dabolim Airport . Another option is to fly to Mangalore Airport . From here you can come down to Gokarna by either a bus or train or by hiring a cab. Gokarna is 145 km from Dabolim Airport and it can take anywhere between 3 to 5 hours to reach depending on the mode of transport. From Mangalore, Gokarna is 250 km away and it takes around 4-5 hours to reach.

Gokarna has good road connectivity to the nearby cities. There are direct buses plying from Mangalore, Goa, and Bangalore at regular intervals. You could also hire a cab from Goa and Mangalore.

Bangalore is usually the most preferred option because it is well connected to Gokarna and buses can be easily booked from the KSRTC website.

Overall, the most convenient and budget-friendly option to travel to Gokarna is by road. If you choose to travel to Gokarna from Mangalore by road, you can also visit other places like Murudeshwar, Padubidri beach and Kasarkod beach (blue flag certified beaches) Apsarakonda, and Maravante on the way.

Getting Around in Gokarna

Although there are frequent local buses operating within the town, they mostly cater to the needs of the locals rather than of the travellers. It’s best to hire a two-wheeler or self-drive to this place as you’ll have the liberty of exploring the place at your own pace. There are quite a few rental shops in the town (E.g. Aparajitha Bike Rent) or you can just enquire at your hotel or hostel. There are also many places where you can rent a bicycle.

Another option would be to hire autos. There are many auto-stands especially near Kudle beach, Om beach and in the town centre. For a budget traveller though it can turn out to be slightly expensive as autos don’t operate by the meter. The rates are mostly fixed and decided by the union and it’s of no use haggling. But the auto drivers are more than willing to give you their number along with a ‘day package’ to travel around. It’s one of the best ways to explore Gokarna.

Best Time to Visit Gokarna

Gokarna is a year-long destination. Although peak monsoon season is considered to be the offseason. During monsoon season, the coast experiences relentless rains and it can be a hassle if you’re not fond of rains. Whereas if you love the monsoons with its cloud-covered landscapes, petrichor ladened air, lush greenery and deserted beaches then it is the perfect time to visit.

On the other hand, the peak summer season, March to May, can get unbearably hot and humid preventing you from exploring the town. So the perfect time would be during the winter months of October to February. Mind you, don’t expect the place to be too cold as it’s definitely going to be humid. Just a tad bit less as compared to other months.

But if you wish to do a staycation as is the case with most people’s post-pandemic travel plan, this can be a perfect place to unwind at a peaceful hotel, homestay, or resort. Better yet, find a place overlooking the sea and while your time away in complete silence and seclusion.

Ideal duration of stay in Gokarna

You can spend anywhere between two days to two weeks in this tranquil town. The ideal number of days to visit all the main places in the town would be 2-3 days. But if you wish to soak in the vibe, relax, unwind and also explore some of the pretty corners of this tranquil town, then I’d suggest adding one or two more days.

Best Places to Eat in Gokarna

There are multiple food joints available in the town and along the beach. Most of these places are affordable serving lip-smacking dishes.

  • Ganga Cafe & White Elephant Restaurant – Good food and beach view (best for Indian and Italian cuisine),
  • Kudle Beach View Resort – Great view and food (best for Indian and Chinese cuisine; try their chocolate pudding)
  • Mantra Cafe, Zostel – Great food and view
  • Prema Restaurant – Great Indian food
  • Namaste Cafe – Great beach view

Top 10 Things to do in Gokarna

It’s not always about ticking off bucket list things when you visit a place, is it? Sometimes it’s worth doing things that are not very mainstream in order to completely get a feel of a place. Here’s a list of things to do in Gokarna to have an immersive and memorable experience in this quaint town.

Cycling in Gokarna Countryside

Most people travel to Gokarna by train or public transport and hence follow a fixed path to reach their hotel and hostel. And immediately set out to check out all the noteworthy spots. While this is completely understandable if you’re short on time, I’d suggest to keep aside a day for leisure and explore the countryside of Gokarna if possible.

Narrow lanes cutting through pastel green rice fields, smooth asphalt roads passing through colorful houses with their sloping red-tiled roofs. Hidden mangrove filled backwaters with peaceful temples quietly sitting on their banks. You’ll come across all this and more when you go off the beaten track. Although any mode of transport will do, it’s best to explore it on a two-wheeler.

Interiors of Gokarna

Flea Market Shopping

Even if you’re someone who loves to shop in malls or popular stores and shops, there’s a different charm in buying a beautiful frock or funky jewellery for dirt cheap prices. Especially in charming sleepy towns tucked away from the rest world.

The town of Gokarna has several flea markets selling traditional colourful outfits, tropical indie-style beach garments, wooden carts covered with bracelets, local crafts, spices, and earrings made out of delicate shells and beads. So go on and splurge! And in turn, you’ll be contributing to the local economy! A win-win situation! 😉

Go for a Boat Ride

Picture this! The gentle hum of the boat’s motor, the constant swish of the waves beneath the boat. And the sun slowly sinking at the horizon. The vast orange blue expanse of the sea on one side and the coconut covered stretch of land on the other slowly blending into the sea. Can you think of a more relaxing experience?

You can take a boat ride from Om Beach to Half-Moon Beach and Paradise Beach. My suggestion would be to reach Half-Moon Beach or Paradise Beach by foot and then take a boat ride back from there to Om Beach.

You might also get to spot some dolphins on the way if you’re lucky!

Go Cafe Hopping

There is no dearth of cafes and eateries in Gokarna. You can find them lining the shores or high above the beach on a cliff overlooking the vast expanse of the sea. Simple, quirky shacks and huts adding to the experience. What better way to spend a peaceful evening than gorging on delicious food and watching the waves crashing on the horizon.

Gokarna Backwaters

Watch Sunrise on the West Coast

Belekan Beach in Gokarna is one of those rare beaches on the west coast where you can watch the sunrise. The complete lack of commercialization of this beach makes it one of the best places to enjoy the early hour bliss. This is one of the best offbeat things to do in Gokarna

Belekan Beach- One of the lesser known beaches of Gokarna

Climb up a Lighthouse

Usually, no visit to a coastal destination is complete without paying a visit to at least one lighthouse. Sadly the one in Gokarna is not very popular and the way to it is also not very straightforward. But if you don’t mind a bit of an adventure. Gokarna Lighthouse is one of the best offbeat places to visit in Gokarna.

Tip: The starting point of the beach trek starts after crossing the stream. Walking straight ahead after crossing the stream takes you towards Paradise beach. Right before this point, there’s a path which forks upwards to the left which leads to the Lighthouse.

Gokarna Lighthouse- Lesser known but beautiful place to visit in Gokarna

Practice Yoga by the Sea.

There’s nothing more peaceful than practising yoga amidst nature. And what better place than by the sea? With your ears constantly filled with the melody of the chirping birds and the gentle crash of the waves, this is one of the best things to do in Gokarna. So just find your spot and zone in.

Watch Sunset on a Cliff

Gokarna and cliffs are synonymous with each other. If you can manage to drift away from the popular spots, you’ll see that there are several untouched nooks still waiting to be discovered. Viewing sunset from a cliff in Gokarna is a breathtaking experience.

Watching the golden orb slowly dip into the horizon high above a cliff while the white frothy waves crash below is an experience like no other. This is one of the best gifts you could give to yourself and one of the beautiful things to do in Gokarna.

Gokarna cliff

Camp by the Beach

If you’ve ever wished to camp by the beachside, Gokarna can be the best place to do it. While there are plenty of modest huts available for stay near the popular beaches of Gokarna, it’s an entirely different experience to camp on a beach.

The best beach to do this would be the Half-Moon beach. Its pristine golden sand with delightful clear water is just too beautiful and will instantly fill you with a sense of joy and calm. There are no facilities available here but the kind locals are forever willing to provide packed food, water and other basic necessities to the campers.

On the way to Half-Moon Beach

Do the Gokarna Beach Trek

This is hands down one of the best things to do in Gokarna. All the beaches in Gokarna are interlinked through short hikes. The joy of hiking along sloping cliffs covered with clusters of palm trees, discovering pretty nooks and crannies along a path through jungles and boulders is unparalleled.

The path is filled with the salt-scented fragrance of the sea, hidden viewpoints peeking out of clamps of bushes with gorgeous sweeping views of the thrashing sea below. It’s probably one of the most gorgeous trekking routes in India. The Gokarna Beach Trek is definitely one of the top things to do in this beach town. You can start the trek in any one of the beaches apart from Half-Moon Beach and Paradise Beach since they are accessible only by foot.

This is the recommended trail: Kudle Beach – Om Beach – Half-Moon Beach – Paradise beach – Belekan beach (or vice versa)

Although the best time to do the Gokarna Beach Trek would be immediately after the monsoons when there’d be an abundance of greenery everywhere, you can do it any time of the year. Be prepared to bear with the sweltering heat though. It’s advisable to go with a local guide or in a group as in few areas the trail is not properly marked and there’s a possibility of getting lost. And at all cost do not venture on the trail alone after sunset.

Hiking between the beaches in Gokarna

Note : If you’re not interested in trekking you can do beach hopping in boats operated by local fishermen. This is mostly operational during the peak season and sometimes when good weather conditions prevail during the off-season.

Several water activities are also available during this time. There’s a ferry line operating between Belekan and Kumta. You can use this ferry to visit a few of the other nearby beaches like Nirvana and Heaven.

Places to Stay in Gokarna

Whether you prefer to stay in the town centre with easy road accessibility or you want to reach out to your gypsy roots and spend a night under the stars, there’s something for everyone in Gokarna.

Here’s a list of some of the best stays

  • Zostel – The goto option for backpackers and budget travellers. And their recently introduced individual cottages make it a great choice even for other tourists. The affordable dorms, great views of the sea, and their in-house cafe serving delicious food have definitely made it a popular choice among everyone.
  • Viraz Valley – Sitting atop a cliff amidst a forest overlooking the sea, this is one of the most affordable and great stays in Gokarna. Easily accessible through a lane which forks off from the main road, it is located at a short distance from Om Beach and Kudle Beach. They have an in-house restaurant and a terrace with great views of the beach.
  • Kudle Beach View Resort – Located amidst a small jungle within walking distance to Kudle beach, this is a great place to unwind if you’re looking for some peace and luxury. Their restaurant, located on the top floor overlooking Kudle Beach is an amazing place to watch the sunset from. The chefs whip up delicious food and this is one of the best places to visit in Gokarna to indulge in some lip-smacking food along with breathtaking views.

This is definitely not a complete list as there are several other stay options in the main town and many other newly emerged resorts and hotels interspersed throughout the town. While you can definitely expect to find a stay throughout the year, do look out for the seasonal crowd which throngs Gokarna during certain religious months. During this time if you happen to reach without prior booking, it might turn out to be slightly inconvenient.

Many cafes and shacks are lined along its shore as well as on the cliff above. From Kudle Beach there is a well-paved path towards Om beach passing under a canopy of trees. However, if you opt to travel during the summers it can turn out to be very hot due to humidity. There are also motorboats ferrying between Kudle Beach and Om Beach. The beach is accessible after a 10-minute hike downhill from the parking area. Definitely one of the most beautiful places to visit in Gokarna and you should include this in the list of things to do in Gokarna

Half-Moon Beach

Shaped like a perfect half-moon this beach is tucked in between jungles and boulders and is accessible only by a short hike from Om Beach. At the far end of the beach, there are a couple of shacks here serving limited food but the beach is a pretty one. Especially peaceful if you happen to visit it during the offseason. A perfect place to perch on the pile of rocks by the beach, sip a drink and watch the sun go down.

You can even stay here for a few days by setting up your own tents. Many people have started opting for this and in order to have the beach all to yourself, it’s better to choose a weekday rather than a weekend.

There’s also a trail which starts somewhere along the main road which is mentioned in Google Maps. The trail between Om beach and Half moon beach is the most picturesque one passing through jagged cliffs overlooking the Arabian Sea.

Note : If you plan to go back by boat then be mindful of the boat timings And if you plan to trek back to Om beach ensure you carry a torch with you and do not trek alone as it can be risky to climb the cliff during late night. You can get your tents and spend the night here under the stars. But ensure to take all your belongings and trash back with you!

Sunset on a cliff

Paradise Beach

South facing scenic beach with no shacks or eateries. Peaceful and secluded, it’s perfect for some soul time and relaxation and one of the secret beaches in Gokarna. You’ll have to put in some effort to reach here though. And that’s the reason it’s still pristine and untouched. It’s a rocky beach hence be careful if you wish to swim here.

You can reach Paradise beach in Gokarna by a small hike through life-sized shrubs and thickets from the Belekan Beach. This route is comparatively less popular as compared to the hike from Om Beach and Half-Moon Beach.

Practice yoga by a peaceful corner or simply perch on a pile of rocks and stare at the dipping sun when the sky catches fire.

Mallikarjuna temple.

Mallikarjuna Temple

Situated along Ashokavana Road, this beautiful temple is a piece of architecture . Snuggly sitting in the middle of an areca nut plantation, this place oozes serenity . With the constant gurgling sound of a stream nearby, the chirping of birds and insects, this is one of the magical places to visit in Gokarna for some quiet and peaceful time.

Shiva Cave Gokarna

Shiva Cave

Sitting amidst a sea of boulders in a picturesque location, Shiva Cave is an interesting place to visit if you’re into exploring offbeat hidden places. If your timing is right, you can listen to some exciting stories from some saints and devotees who often use this cave as a resting place. They’ll regale you with their interesting tales about the history and significance of this cave.

The legend goes by the story that this cave was made by a cow captured by Ravana while escaping from his grasp. It is also believed that there’s a secret tunnel in the cave which leads to Varanasi. Irrespective of whether you believe in Mahabharata or not, these stories certainly have a different charm while you listen to them standing there and try to visualize everything. The surrounding area has a peaceful vibe about it and you can spend some quiet time sitting among the boulders.

Travel Tip: Look for a ‘Shiva Cave’ board opposite Kudle Beach View Resort from where the path starts

Jatayu Tirtha

Jatayu Tirtha

A cliff tucked in between Gokarna beach and Kudle beach this is a heavenly place for watching the sunset along with some breathtaking views of the sea and the rocks below. It’s not very popular yet since it takes some effort to reach here and only a handful of people manage to stumble across it. You can reach this place either from Kudle beachside or from a path near Rama Tirtha temple.

You can also hike down to the rocky shore below where a small stream flows to the sea. This is considered to be the place where Jatayu from Ramayana was slain by Ravana.

A gradual slope leads down to the turquoise water sheathed in soft white foam. I stumbled upon this gem of a place by chance and was blown away by its beauty. White frothy waves crashed on the rocks below, with absolutely no one around. Just the sound of waves, breeze and the smell of sea and sunset.

Rama Tirtha

Apsarakonda

This is a beautiful beach village hiding in plain sight near Honnavar. The beach sees almost no visitors apart from few locals and is one of the cleanest beaches I’ve come across. There’s a lovely garden with a variety of flowers and a viewpoint from where you can get a panaromic view of the sparkling beach below.

There’s also a waterfall here which is a pretty sight during the monsoon but not much of a beauty during the other seasons.

Gokarna Beach, Places to Visit in Gokarna Karnataka, 2 Day Itinerary for Gokarna Trip

Gokarna is a tiny temple town located on the coast of Karnataka. While this often leads people to believe that it's a small town filled with nothing but temples, priests and pilgrims seeking peace, they couldn't be more wrong. Well, technically, they would be right but there's a lot more to this place than just the temples. Gokarna, infact, is a popular hippie destination famous for it's beaches. Two of the most popular Gokarna beaches are Om beach and Kudle beach. Unknown to regular tourists, there are a bunch of hidden beaches which are accessible only to those who seek adventure. This is exactly what I was looking for when I set out to Gokarna for 2 days on a weekend. Thus this post contains a list of places to visit in Gokarna in 2 days .

Places to Stay in Gokarna

Zostel Gokarna, Where to Stay in Gokarna, Places to Visit in Gokarna Karnataka, 2 Day Itinerary for Gokarna Trip

Okay so here's the thing about places to stay in Gokarna. Most people go for the Gokarna beach resorts immediately. Book such resorts if you're travelling with your family or in a large group. However, if you're a young couple, a solo traveller or a bunch of friends out to explore, then booking a hostel in Gokarna would be the best option for you.

Find hotels in Gokarna on Booking.com

Zostel Gokarna

Zostel Gokarna has dorm rooms and private cottages at a cheap cost. Their in-house cafe called Mantra cafe overlooks the Gokarna beach and has a total beach vibe. They even have hammocks overlooking the beach and a funky common room (see image above). Additionally, they organize tours and walks at super affordable prices. Plus, you'll meet really interesting people there! It's the best option for booking a stay in Gokarna at a minimal cost but getting the best out of your buck!

Check availability of Zostel Gokarna on Booking.com

HostelLife Gokarna

Just a stone's throw away from Zostel Gokarna, HostelLife is another great place to stay in Gokarna at a cheap cost . There are many reasons for booking this stay. Firstly, it's just a 12 minute walk from the Gokarna main beach . Secondly, you will get epic view of the ocean from the hostel itself. Not to mention its proximity to the Gokarna sunset point , just like Zostel.

Best Places to Visit in Gokarna in 2 Days

There are 2 types of people who visit Gokarna. Firstly, its the Hindu devotees who come here for the temples. Secondly, the backpackers looking for the beaches and the chill vibes. No matter what type of traveler you are, you can spend 2 days in Gokarna to explore both the temples and the beaches here. Take a look at my suggested Gokarna itinerary below.

DAY 1 OF GOKARNA ITINERARY

On your first day in Gokarna, you'll be exploring the main town and catching the sunset in the evening. Through its a very small town, it is considered extremely pious so visit the temples and even perform a prayer if that's something you're up for.

Explore the Gokarna Town

Places to Visit in Gokarna Karnataka, 2 Day Itinerary for Gokarna Trip, Gokarna Temple

You mustn't skip out on exploring the charming old Gokarna town. As you walk down the narrow lanes with houses packed closely on both sides, you'll find some commonality among all the houses. Almost every house has a white rangoli  - a pattern drawn outside the house and a  diya (lamp) lighting up the outside. I would recommend walking around the town right after the sunset. The heat can be unbearable during the day. Besides, watching the diya filled lanes and the priests performing evening rituals is enlightening. Pun intended.

Perform a Prayer Ceremony at Gokarna Temple

Gokarna Temple, Places to Visit in Gokarna Karnataka, 2 Day Itinerary for Gokarna Trip

It is said that the main Gokarna temple houses the shivaling . Hundreds of people visit Gokarna each day just to be able to touch this shivaling with their own hands. Apart from regular temple visits, one can even perform special prayer ceremonies with the help of the Gokarna temple priests. Each ceremony has a different cost based on various factors. If you have the time, definitely perform a prayer ceremony inside the Gokarna temple.

Watch the Sunset

Places to Visit in Gokarna Karnataka, 2 Day Itinerary for Gokarna Trip

It's a no-brainer that we've all seen sunsets, and some truly magnificent ones too. One of the most serene sunsets I've ever experienced was during my 2-day Gokarna trip. Maybe it was because it was my first solo trip, or because I managed to meet a bunch of truly amazing people. Whatever the reason may be, sitting on a cliff by myself, with gentle winds playing with the stands of my hair and an endless ocean ahead of me, I witnessed a magical moment that lasted a while. The spot where I watched the sun go down is located off the kudle road, on the right hand side of the road, when you're facing the kudle beach. Look for a makeshift playing ground where some youngsters are playing cricket, opposite to the kudle beach parking lot. Go towards the cliff that you see farther from the ground.

DAY 2 OF GOKARNA ITINERARY

It's the second day of your Gokarna itinerary and its time to see some of the best places to visit in Gokarna i.e. the Gokarna beaches!!

Gokarna Beach Trek

Gokarna Beach Trek Route, Places to Visit in Gokarna Karnataka, 2 Day Itinerary for Gokarna Trip

Apart from the main Gokarna beach, there are many other beaches in Gokarna which make the place popular among the youth. Although Om beach and Kudle beach are the other most popular beaches in Gokarna, there are 3 other not-so-famous Gokarna beaches that are relatively unexplored. These beaches are Belekal beach , Paradise beach and Half moon beach . While most treks start from Om, take you to Half moon and Paradise beach, they require you to trek back to Om beach. A better alternative is to get to Belekal beach by an autorikshaw (tuk-tuk), trek to Paradise beach, Half moon beach and finally Om beach. This is the route that my gang followed. It look us 6 hours, But we took it easy, bathed in the sea and had a humongous breakfast at half moon beach!

Start the day early at 6 am so that you can catch the sunrise at Belekan beach!

Explore the Gokarna Food Scene

Gokarna Restaurant Food, Places to Visit in Gokarna Karnataka, 2 Day Itinerary for Gokarna Trip

After you're exhausted from the early morning-afternoon beach trek, take some time to chill and explore the food scene. Zostel's in-house Mantra cafe overlooks the Gokarna beach, as shown in the picture. I would come back just for that view! Kudle beach has a bunch of shacks serving decent food which you can enjoy while watching the waves. Namaste cafe at Om beach is another popular albeit over-hyped spot. Personally, I think you can find hip shacks serving better food at lower rates at Om beach. Find a shack, sip a healthy juice and rejuvenate before you head back to your city after a break.

Best time to Visit Gokarna

Places to Visit in Gokarna Karnataka, 2 Day Itinerary for Gokarna Trip, Zostel Gokarna

Anytime is a good time for a trip to Gokarna! Just avoid the monsoon season from late June to August . You won't be able to enjoy the beaches and treks during this time. Also, if you can't bear the summer heat, then I don't suggest visiting Gokarna in May either. October to April is the best time to visit all the places in Goakrna. While there aren't many Gokarna attractions, beaches, treks, temples and a hammock will be your best friends during your short vacay in Gokarna! Spend 2 days in Gokarna to make the most of your trip.

Budget Trip To Gokarna within ₹4500 – Gokarna Travel Guide

How everyone wishes to travel but just can’t because of no leaves or limited leaves. I always thought this was a myth that there are no leaves in the corporate world. Fast forward to when I joined the same world all those myths became true. But planning a trip once a month I knew wasn’t going to be that tough. I started shortlisting the places nearby Bangalore which can be easily done in 2 days(come on you can manage 2 days in a month at least) and are also budget-friendly.

Gokarna Travel guide

The first thing that comes to my mind when someone says a vacation is a beach. When anyone hears of a beach there are only two choices most of the time, Goa or Pondicherry. But very few people know about a town called Gokarna which is located on the western coast of India. With its pristine, less crowded beaches and Gokarna beach trek it is a great vacation spot. This Gokarna travel guide will tell you everything you need to know about the place, how to save that extra buck and places to visit in Gokarna in 2 days.

Like to plan your travels early? Take a look at these 14 Long weekends in 2024

What is the best time to visit Gokarna?

Gokarna beach trek

The best time to visit Gokarna can be in the months after the Monsoon which is from September October to March . But since people have been knowing about Gokarna in the last few years you might be able to see a good crowd. The months from April to June are quite hot but attract a lot of lesser tourists and could be one of the ways to save some money during the offseason.

Gokarna Travel Guide – Day by day itinerary

Om beach

Day 0: How to Reach Gokarna

Gokarna travel guide

Starting my trip from Bangalore. Gokarna is easily accessible by bus and train. The latter is not an option because it takes a lot of time. But if you plan to go to Gokarna for 3 days train is the most suitable option to travel at least from one side. The bus price usually ranges from Rs 800 to 1200(sleeper) if booked a few days in advance. There are KSRTC buses which charge around Rs 500 but are seater. The buses are usually late in the night and you reach Gokarna early morning.

Day 1: Things to do in Gokarna on day 1

gokarna checkpost

Upon reaching Gokarna by 8 am there are two places the bus usually drops you. If you get down at the Gokarna check-post don’t ever take the left towards Kudle Beach as that is a longer route. Then you walk straight, the town is just 1km. If you take an auto to the town or the beach it will cost you a minimum of Rs200. But if you get down at the main bus stand which is in the centre of the town going to the beaches becomes easier. Don’t take the auto to the beaches as it will cost you Rs 100 for just a km. Instead, it is great to have a walk in the morning. If you don’t want to do the Gokarna beach trek then you can rent a scootie starting from Rs 300(more details can be found online)

Where to stay in Gokarna

graffiti in gokarna

As soon as you trek down and enter Kudle beach the view will take your breath away.  Staying in Gokarna is never an issue until it is a festival season. You could try a few of the beach shacks on Kudle or a few hostels on the way to the Kudle beach . They range from Rs 400 – Rs 600 per person. I stayed at Sea Rock cafe which cost me Rs700 for a night which can accommodate 2 people easily. The room is a cement block covered with wood on the top and you have a private washroom to yourself. The place looked decent and safe for women. The Gokarna beach trek connects all the main beaches of Gokarna and the town. Once we were settled in the shack we had breakfast there which cost us Rs 100.

The other stay option I’ll recommend to you is Zostel which is on the way to Kudle Beach. Zostel is safe for women travellers as well.

After 12 we left to explore the town and the temples. I wouldn’t bore you much with the history of the town, just that the Mahabaleshwar temple was built in the 4th Century. The Gokarna town is very small and can be covered on feet. Then we went towards the Gokarna beach, one of the most crowded beaches apart from OM beach. After relaxing on the Gokarna beach we had lunch at Prema Cold Drinks (permanently closed) . Which cost us around Rs 100 – Rs 150

Once we were done with the lunch we returned to the shack and relaxed.

Planning to stay for longer in Gokarna? Check this comprehensive Gokarna 3-Day itinerary .

Kudle Beach: The best sunset ever

Sunset at kudle beach

In the evening we took a dip in the Kudle beach and just sat there to experience one of the best sunsets ever. According to me, experiencing the sunset is one of the top things to do in Gokarna. In the night while going for dinner we found a lot of crabs on the beach so make sure to not stamp them. We had dinner again at the La Pizzeria cafe (Now known as Ganga Cafe) which cost us around Rs 250 – 300 max.

Gokarna travel guide

Day 2: Gokarna beach trek

Gokarna beach trek

We woke up early to check out the sunrise, though not being a morning person. It resembled just like a red ball. Never knew sunrise was also a great experience but sunsets still win hands down. After having breakfast at the shack which cost us Rs 100 we left for the Gokarna beach trek. The total distance of the trek is approx 6km. The beaches connected to this trek are Gokarna Beach, Kudle Beach, OM Beach, Half-moon Beach and Paradise Beach all at a distance of 1-1.5km. Carry enough water to keep you hydrated. The next stop was the OM beach. The trek starts from the end of Kudle beach where the steps will lead you to the other side of the cliff. The trek was moderately easy if you don’t want to trek you can take an auto/taxi. The next part was the descent towards Om Beach. I did find a lot of trash and garbage on the way.

Om Beach: Why is it named so?

OM beach

The beach is named OM because it forms two crescent shapes which result in the OM shape(Hindu symbol)

On reaching the OM beach we rested a while at the Namaste cafe which is too overrated and also very expensive. We didn’t have anything from the cafe and just relaxed on the beach. The waves were very wild here as compared to the Kudle beach. After going a little deep into Om Beach there is a sudden drop, so be careful who don’t know how to swim. One of the worst things I experienced here was the native people and tourists from India troubling the foreigners for a photo. Request to everyone, let the foreigners alone as they too are on vacation and wouldn’t want to be disturbed. The time is already 11 am. Here you can get ferries to Half-moon Beach, Paradise Beach and Nirvana Beach (Cost: 200 – 400 per person). We didn’t take the ferry and resumed our trek to the Half-moon beach. I also discovered a new point on the way to the half-moon beach( Om Beach viewpoint ) The trek is a bit tough and very dangerous at one point. So don’t look too much on the right as it is 60-70 ft deep.

Gokarna beach trek

Half Moon Beach: the cute beach

Half moon beach

The beach is in the shape of a half-moon and is named so. You will find very few people on this beach. Since the beach is very small, it is actually like a private beach with less or no people. Just behind the half-moon beach are the rice paddy fields. I was seeing rice fields for the first time this close to the beach. Crossing the half-moon beach there is another unnamed beach with a lot of black pebbles and rocks. There are 2 cafes on this beach so we decided to have our lunch in one of the cafes. They served some really good bread omelette or maybe we were too hungry so the total lunch cost us Rs 150.

Paradise Beach: The camper’s heaven

gokarna beach trek

The next stop was the Paradise Beach. The trek from Half Moon Beach presumes from the backside of the cafe we had lunch from. Upon reaching this beach I made up my mind to come here and camp as I saw a few people camping and it was one of the best and most peaceful beaches.

There are two parts to the beaches separated by a huge rock in between. There are only two local sellers here selling fruits. If you are lucky you can even find someone making an omelette for you. Visiting Paradise Beach has to be one of the top things to do in Gokarna. While returning it took us around 2 hours. We reached our shacks by 4:30 – 5 p.m.

Another sunset at the Kudle beach

Gokarna travel guide

After relaxing for some time and then we had our last meal at 6:30 pm at the La Pizzeria cafe. I know it’s too early but since the bus goes through a lot of hairpin bends it was better to have the meal beforehand. The snacks/dinner cost us Rs 300 approx. Before catching the bus we went to the temple and had prasad. The bus was at 8:30 pm and we reached Bangalore by 7 am.

In your conclusion you write “Don’t disturb the foreigners as they to are on their vacation and wouldn’t want to be disturbed”. Did you see some foreigners being disturbed? Am very curious to know the background of this story 🙂 Thank you!

Hey darja it’s my pleasure that I was able to introduce you to a new place. The disturbance caused to the foreigners was just they were being forced to take pictures and also stared upon.

  • March 2, 2024

Tucked away along the western coast of India lies the small temple town of Gokarna. With its pristine beaches, rich Hindu temples, quaint hamlets, and adventurous watersports, Gokarna has become a haven for backpackers and thrill-seekers.

From surfing along the shores of the Arabian Sea to hiking up sacred hills, there’s no shortage of heart-racing activities.

Once an important Hindu pilgrimage site, Gokarna is located in the state of Karnataka. It’s known for sacred places like Mahabaleshwara Temple and Giant Shiva Statue, which draw Hindu devotees.

The main attractions are 4 stunning stretches of golden sand: Gokarna Beach, Kudle Beach, Om Beach and Half Moon Beach. They all have fairly chilled-out shacks serving seafood and backpacker vibes.

In town, you’ll find atmospheric temples, veggie-friendly cafes, quirky shops and foreigners mingling with religious pilgrims. Cows roam free everywhere, adding to the magical atmosphere.

3-Day Gokarna Itinerary

Mode of Transport: Autos are easily available from major attractions. Scooters and cycles can be rented from certain locations.

PS: This is not a commercialized tourist destination like Goa, so you can ask the localities or hotel owners for guidance and direction.

Beach Hopping

09:00 AM – 03:00 PM

Beach trek is something that you don’t get to do more often. Some of the iconic and popular beaches of Gokarna are situated close to one another but the real challenge is accessibility. Motor vehicles and bikes are allowed till Kudle and Om beach. Half-moon and Paradise beaches have to be explored on foot and the trekking route begins from Om beach.

So start by 09:00 and enjoy an auto ride through narrow lanes of Gokarna till Kudle Beach.

Kudle beach is the only beach out of the lot where you will find enough shacks and a couple of shops. The beach is half sandy and half rocky. Waves on this beach are relatively rough, so avoid taking a swim or going deep into the sea.

Make sure to get some snacks before beginning the beach trek.

You can walk to Om beach which would take around 25 – 30 mins or take an auto.

Om Beach is so named because its shape resembles the symbol of Om (ॐ). You can figure it out from a higher elevation. There are some shops at the entrance but nothing can be found at the beach.

The real trek begins from this point. The route to Half-Moon beach goes through the forest and over the hills. There are high chances of getting lost, as the trails are really confusing and you won’t find any signboard in the middle. Some patches are really challenging and along a cliff.

There is only one shack at the Half-moon beach , so take a mandatory rest here.

The route to the Paradise beach offers some stunning and spectacular views of the Arabian Sea.

Time duration: The journey from Kudle to Paradise will take around 2 hours and the return journey would take the same time. In 5 – 6 hours, you can complete this beach trek.

Advice : DO NOT GO SOLO ON BEACH TREK! Find a group and stick with them till the end. Put on waterproof footwear that has a good grip. Although it’s a beach trek, AVOID slippers!

Temple Visit and Sunset

04:00 PM – 07:00 PM

After successfully completing the beach trek, head towards the Gokarna Main Beach.

100 meters from the Gokarna Main Beach is the Sri Mahabaleshwara Temple .

Sri Mahabaleshwara Temple is an ancient and revered temple in Gokarna. Everyone in the town knows about this temple. Pay a visit and offer your prayers at this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

And finally, wind up your long day at the Gokarna Main Beach with the view of mindboggling sunset.

Mode of Transport: Best way to travel will be an auto or a cab or your personal vehicle.

08:00 AM – 05:00 PM

Yana Caves is a place you cannot afford to miss when in Gokarna. The distance from Gokarna Main Beach to Yana Caves is more than 50 km. The humongous and captivating rock formation is truly a natural wonder. At the entrance of the cave is a temple with Shiva Linga that is washed by the flowing water drops from the rocks.

The parking area is almost 1 km from the cave and trekking through the forest is the only way of reaching the caves from the parking lot. Not a place for the elderly or people with ailments.

Time duration: 2 – 3 hours

If you are a history buff then you must head towards Mirjan Fort, after exploring Yana Caves.

30 km from the cave, Mirjan Fort is partially ruined but ASI is putting its best efforts to maintain the remains of the fort. It was built in the 16 th century. With fewer tourists visiting and stunning views, this is definitely an instagrammable place. The timings of the fort are 08:00 AM to 06:00 PM.

Time duration: 45 min – 1 hour

If you have some energy left, you can pay a visit to Vibhuti Falls .

Vibhuti Falls is 40 km from Mirjan Fort. You have to trek from the parking area to the falls which is a distance of 1 km through the forest. You can take a plunge in the water, if you feel like doing it.

These attractions are not frequently visited by tourists as there aren’t many promotions. Recently, these places are getting some attention and are bound to become more popular with Gokarna.

Time duration: 2 – 2.5 hours

Off-beat Sightseeing

09:00 AM – 05:00 PM

There are 3 places which you can explore on the third day and all of them are more than 80 km from Gokarna.

Option 1: Jog Falls

Option 2: Sathodi Falls

Option 3: Murdeshwar & Netrani Island

Advice : It is not possible to cover these places in a single day from Gokarna. You can choose to visit any one of the places or extend your stay and cover them on subsequent days.

Mode of Transport: a cab or your personal vehicle is the only way of reaching these places conveniently.

Jog Falls is India’s second-highest plunge waterfall, the first being Cherrapunjee’s Nohkalikai Falls. Jog Falls has 3-4 streams of flowing water. The area has rich forest cover and amidst the greenery flows the magical Jog Falls. Taking a dip is not possible at this fall.

At the viewpoint, you get enough parking space, toilet facilities and a restaurant.

It is located 120 km south of Gokarna and takes more than 2 hours to get here. The road passes through hilly terrain and if you don’t have a skilled driver with you it may take close to 3 hours.

Jog Falls lies on National Highway 69. If you are planning to visit Shivamogga or Bangalore from Gokarna, you can stop by at the falls.

Sathodi Falls is a picnic spot for the localities. The falls appears to be rectangular in shape and allows tourists to take a dip in the water. You have to walk some distance and the path is well-paved and easy to walk.

The distance of this falls from Gokarna is 90 km and will take less than 2 hours to get here.

Magod Falls is 30 km from Sathodi Falls. You can also plan to visit this.

If you are headed towards Hubli, you can stop by at both the falls.

Murdeshwar is famous for its iconic Shiva Temple with the world’s second tallest statue of Lord Shiva and the 20-storey entrance tower, famously known as Raja Gopuram. The beach where the temple is located is called Temple Beach.

The distance from Gokarna to Murdeshwar is 80 km.

Netrani Island is a coral island, 20 km from Murudeshwar beach. Netrani island is a popular spot for adventurous activities like scuba diving and snorkeling. It takes 1.5 hours to get there by boat.

These places can be covered if you are heading towards Mangalore or Udupi.

I Travelled To Gokarna For 3 Days In ₹7,000 Including Bus Tickets, Stay & Meals

I Travelled To Gokarna For 3 Days In ₹7,000 Including Bus Tickets, Stay & Meals

When we think of beach vacations, one destination that instantly comes to our mind is Goa. Being a go-to beach destination for many, with time, this hippie town has also emerged as a party capital of India. I love Goa too, but I also feel that over-tourism and extreme commercialisation has made it an overhyped destination. Gone are the days when beaches were all about calmness; now they are merely flocked by tourists. And like me, if you too miss the serenity of the beaches and the magic of the sunsets, then you must visit Gokarna.

Plan A Perfect Budget Trip To Gokarna

Nestled in Karnataka, this temple town is not only known for its pristine, less crowded beaches but is also known for its tranquil environment. Gokarna has the charm of Goa without the hustle-bustle of it. It’s a perfect place to unwind with your friends, gorge on some seafood and spend some quiet quality time by the sea. If reading this has already convinced you to plan a trip to Gokarna, then this budget itinerary is for you. I visited Gokarna with a friend last year in July for three days, and here’s how I planned it for ₹7,000 per person.

Transport: I took an overnight luxurious bus from Mumbai, and the two-way journey cost me ₹2,300. It took me 12 hours to reach Gokarna and from there another 25 minutes to my accommodation. My friend was from Bangalore, so she took a night bus and met me directly at Gokarna.

Stay: Hostel culture is quite popular in Gokarna. This beach town offers a plethora of hostels, homestays and BnBs that fit right in the budget. We lived in Zostel, which is nestled right by the Kudle beach. The property offers a majestic view of the beach, and in total the stay cost us ₹3,000, which is ₹1500 per person for 2 nights and 3 days.

Transfers: The best way to travel around in Gokarna is by renting a two-wheeler. We rented a scooter and paid ₹1000 for three days, which again is ₹500 per person. Apart from this, I spent ₹300 extra on transfers.

Tip: Rickshaws are available, but they are a bit expensive. So it’s better to rent a two-wheeler.

Food: Gokarna is well-known for its beach cafes. I spent ₹2500 on meals for three days. I was travelling with a friend, so the food costs were divided between us.

Tip: Do try the local dishes, they are affordable, filling and tasty too.

Best time to visit: If you don’t want to tan and want to stay away from the harsh rays of the sun, then consider hitting Gokarna between October- February.

Gokarna

However, visiting this beach town during the monsoon season isn’t a bad idea either. I went in July, and I must say with fewer tourists and affluence of flora, the beaches looked more sacred.

We reached Gokarna at 9 AM, and the scanty rainfall welcomed us in this beautiful town. After checking in the hostel by 9 30 AM, we rested for a while. Post that, we grabbed some lunch at the in-house cafe in our hostel. Cafe Mantra in Zostel is also one of the most popular cafes in Gokarna. Good food and chilled beer with a view of Kudle beach helped us start our trip.

Gokarna

On day one, we decided to keep it slow. We visited the iconic Mahabaleshwara Temple and were stunned by its Dravidian style design and architecture. After spending an hour at the temple, we headed to Kudle beach for the sunset. We enjoyed the serenity of the beach while the sun painted the sky with hues of orange and yellow. Later, we called it a night and headed back to the hostel for dinner.

We started the day early by 7.30 AM, and after having a wholesome breakfast at Cafe Mantra, we left to rent a two-wheeler. Our first stop for the day was Mirjan Fort, which is also one of the unexplored places of Gokarna. We spent 2-3 hours exploring the secluded fort, which was surrounded by lush greenery. We left from the fort at 1 PM and had lunch at a local joint which was known for its seafood.

Gokarna

Post that, we started our beach trek from the Kudle beach . Our trek covered Paradise beach, Om Beach and Half-moon beach. The three-hour trek had made us super hungry, and hence we visited the famous Namaste Cafe on the OM beach for a hearty meal. Our night ended on a high note with some palatable food and conversations with fellow travellers.

Gokarna

Tip: Namaste Cafe and local eateries don’t accept cards, so make sure to carry cash with you.

This was officially our last day in Gokarna. We woke up early, packed our bags and decided to make the most of the remaining time before catching the bus at night. We rode to Ankola and visited the famous Honey beach. While the beach was stunning, it was the scenic ride from the hostel to Ankola that we enjoyed the most.

Gokarna

We crossed some beautiful villages covered with coconut trees and the picturesque landscapes in the area, made everything look surreal.

Gokarna

On our way back, we stopped for food at a small kitchen owned by locals and savoured the famous fish fry and Bhakri. By 7 PM, we bid goodbye to the place and headed to the bus stand. I boarded the bus for Mumbai for 7 PM while my friend boarded the bus for Bangalore.

Gokarna

I honestly think that visiting Gokarna during the monsoon season was the best decision of my life. With fewer tourists, the idyllic beaches and pristine waters looked more tranquil. The rain Gods surely made travelling a bit difficult, but the lush greenery and delectable food compensated for it.

Things You Shouldn’t Miss Out On:

Since I had visited during the monsoon season, most of the beach shacks were not open. I also missed out on taking yoga lessons on Kudle beach, but you should definitely consider taking one.
