After doing a lot research online I decided to book my first ever trek with Himalayan Hikers and was part of their 29th July Hampta Pass Trek and I honestly consider myself very lucky that I decided to go with Himalayan Hikers and not with anyone else. Right from day 01 when we arrived in Manali they took care of us like a family member. They have the best group of team members who are always there for you no matter what. They have an answer to each and every question you have in your mind. I was surprised to see the professionalism that every Himalayan Hikers staff displayed during the trek.

Hampta Pass Trek: An Overview

Magnificent Views of the Hampta Valley

The  Hampta Pass Trek  is a dynamic and challenging trekking experience located in the Himachal Pradesh region of India. An intriguing part of this trek is the dramatic landscape variation, from the lush green Kullu Valley to the stark desert-like landscape of the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys.

The trek starts from  Manali , a bustling hill station known for its scenic beauty. The trail moves through the dense forests of  Jobra  to the open meadows of  Chika  and  Balu ka Ghera . Trekkers ascend to the high-altitude grazing ground at  Shea Goru  and experience the snowy and rugged terrain. The trail culminates by crossing the challenging  Hampta Pass , a thrilling experience 14,000 feet above sea level.

The Hampta Pass Trek is  perfect for both beginners and experienced trekkers  due to its  moderate difficulty level . This trek offers diverse ecosystems, surreal landscapes, and a walk through clouds. It promises the allure of the Himalayas at its best. The hike usually includes visiting the stunning  Chandratal Lake , known for its crystal clear blue waters.

This trek, taking  roughly 4-5 days , is best undertaken from  June to September , when the weather conditions are most favourable. Overall, the Hampta Pass Trek is a mesmerising journey that promises an unparalleled encounter with the serene beauty of the Himalayas.

Hampta Pass Trek: Difficulty & Duration

Hampta Pass Trek

Alright, the  Hampta Pass Trek  isn’t exactly a cakewalk. It’s set at a  moderate level of difficulty . The whole trail stretches around  26 kilometres , and usually, we wrap it up in 4 to 5 days. Now, on any given day, we’re looking at about  5-7 kilometres  of a trek. This should take  5-6 hours  daily, but it varies depending on your pace and the terrain you’re up against.

The trail’s got its fair share of variety – from lush, thick forests to wide-open meadows and challenging mountain passes. At its peak, the Hampta Pass takes you soaring to about  14,000 feet . The constant change in altitude can catch you off guard, so it’s crucial to acclimatise well to avoid altitude sickness.

Despite its  moderate difficulty  tag, take this trek seriously. Having a reasonable fitness level before you sign up is a good idea. Get some regular cardio in – think running, cycling, swimming – and sprinkle in strength training for good measure. And squeeze in a few short hikes before this one – it’ll give you a taste of what’s in store.

Keep this in mind – this trek isn’t a race. It’s about enjoying the journey. So, go at your own comfortable pace, take plenty of breaks, and, most importantly, soak in the sheer beauty of the Himalayas. After all, these experiences come in only some days.

Best Season for the Hampta Pass Trek

Hampta Pass in the month of April

The best time to take on the  Hampta Pass Trek  is during the  monsoon season , from  June to September . This is when the weather is just suitable for hiking. The average temperature during these months ranges between  12-20 degrees Celsius during the day . It can drop to about  -2 to 6 degrees Celsius at night .

Now, why is monsoon the best time? Well, the main reason is the beauty of the place. During monsoon, the whole area comes alive with lush greenery. You’ll see lots of pretty flowers blooming everywhere. The rivers and waterfalls are complete and look beautiful too. The mountains and valleys are covered in a fresh, green blanket. It’s like nature puts on a grand show just for you!

But every coin has two sides. Monsoon also means rain, and that can make the trail slippery. Walking can get tricky, and you’ll have to watch your step. Sometimes, the rain can even make you halt your trek for a while. It’s essential to carry rain gear to keep you dry. Also, nights can get quite cold, so have warm clothes.

But all in all, the monsoon season adds a lot of charm to the trek. Yes, there are challenges, but they’re worth it. You’ll take back home beautiful memories and amazing stories!

hampta pass trek hashtags

Day 1 Manali (1,800 m) to Cheeka (2,900 m) via Pirni (1,900 m) and Sethan

We begin the day early and drive from Manali to Jobri via Pirni and Sethan. Pirni is a village a little short of 4 kilometers south of the Manali city bus depot on the Naggar road. We take a left from the T intersection at Pirni, towards village Sethan, which is closed to regular traffic movement as it was principally contructed to link to the hydel power project at Jobri on the Rani Nalah which we would accompany all the way to the base of the hampta pass.

You need to obtain a permit to take a vehicle up this road The road is with as many hairpin turns, that you will run out of fingers were you to begin counting them. However the trend continues only until Sethan following which its a straight ride to Jobri, 4 km away. We begin the trek at Jobri as we march towards Cheeka, lying only about 2 km ahead. We cross the thick forest and mud covered trail as we make our way to the Campsite, the arrival of which is marked by a gradual parting of treeline to pave way for the meadows along the raging waters of the Rani Nalah.

Day 2 Cheeka (2,900 m) to Balu ka Ghera (3,600 m)

We start our journey early after breakfast. We begin by crossing a makeshift wooden bridge built by shepherds and onto the right bank of the stream and then another to cross one adjoining stream. Hence forth it is a continuous climb upto Jawara post which the gradient subsides upto Balu Ka Ghera. Hampta Pass is a well taken route by Gaddi Shepherds who climb the pass over into Lahaul and Spiti every year, as the lower meadows begin to dry. Thus it is quite prominent to spot them with their flock of sheep. However their swiftness renders their itinerary short and is comprised of only 2 days.

The final steps to Jawara include traversing upon the carefully placed rocks over an adjoining stream. The Jwara meadows offer a welcoming site. While the treeline comes to an end on the right bank along our route, the opposite bank is lined with birch that grow further up on the hillside. The valley narrows down as we proceed further up to Balu ka Ghera campsite which is at an hours walk from Jawara.

The Balu ka Ghera is a flatbed with plenty of camping space. While we pitch out tents here, the shepherd have a keen tendency to proceed further up to the base of the glacial lake from where the climb to the Hampta pass begins. In June and upto early July, it is the spot upto which snowline exists, which begins to melt away with the advent of rain.

Day 3 Balu Ka Ghera (3,600 m) to Shea Goru (3,920 m) via Hampta Pass(4,280 m)

Today is the toughest day of the trek as the trekking distance is the most and we climb to the Hampta Pass before we descend to graze the peripheries of Lauhal as we proceed towards Shea Goru campsite. We begin the day early today as the altitude is bound to slow our pace and unpredictable weather can further create hinderance. We proceed on the right bank of the stream tracing its origin in a small glacial lake formation. If the rains have not yet set in, the snowline begins here. However once the snow melts it becomes hard to navigate the streams coming in from our left, joining the right bank of the river.

We hop over to the other bank and trace our way towards the pass from there. Indarasan peak is visible in the distance a little towards right of our direction of approach towards the hampta pass. It appears as if summit of a temple and the name literally translates as the seat of lord Indra, who as per the Vedas is the king of Heaven (Swarg) and Gods. Mythologies and popular belief in Hinduism associate his powers to be similar with those of Odin, Thor, Zeus and Jupiter, the popular deities across Indo-European cultures.

Once we reach the hampta pass we are introduced to a different world together. As the vision gets a glimpse of the naked mountains of Lahaul. The senses, overwhelmed, begin to be weighed by the magnificence of the landscape before us as it changes abruptly, and the spirit is joyous with a sense of accomplishment and that of fulfilment. We wait, we bow to pay our respects to the divine before us and we proceed.

The path from here onwards comprises of a steep descent towards Shea Goru Campsite that can be seen far off in the distance to the left of our ascent to the pass, which is slight East of North as against our approach to Hampta pass in the eastward direction. After maneuvering through some steep slopes and then cutting across the side of an almost overhanging ridge we finally make it to a boulder strewn trail that takes us down to the last slope, which we can glissade down if there is enough snow.

Once we are down into the valley the gradient is almost flat for the rest of the way to Shea Goru campsite. We reach the campsite in another 30-40 minutes.

Day 4 Shea Goru (3,920 m) to Chattru (3,320 m); Drive to Chandratal (4,260 m) and back to Chattru - 120 KM

We start the day by crossing a snowbridge over to the opposite (left) bank of the river or a makeshift bridge if the glacial formations have melted away. The gradient increases as we rush downhill towards Chattru that lies on the Manali – Kaza road.

An hour short of our destination we get a clear view of the Road that lies on the opposite bank of the raging Chenab river. We make a turn towards the North-West a few hundered meters short of the river towards an alpine meadow which can be seen a few hundred meters down, at times occupied by shepherds. We have to cross a stream to continue towards Shea Goru campsite and then finally traverse glacial moraine before we finally are able to rush through a well off trail. While the campsite is on the left bank of the river itself, the Chattru Dhaba is located on the opposite bank that is accessible by an iron bridge.

We drive to Chandratal, a journey that would take another 3 hours and take us to an altitude of 4,260 meters. We visit the Chandratal or the moon shaped lake, which can be witnessed if we climb high up on the eastward ridge. Furthermore a glacial lake at the base of a retracted glacier, Samudri Tapu, can be seen in the backdrop, far away, if we have enough time. We drive back to Chattru and camp beside the river. There are a few Dhabas at Chattru.

Day 5 Chattru (3,320 m) to Manali via Rohtang Tunnel or Rohtang Pass (3,980 m - on request only)

After witnessing magnificent views during early morning, twilight hour, we start our journey towards Manali via Rohtang Tunnel. Prior to construction of the Tunnel the drive used to be a tiring one via Rohtang Pass. The distance is reduced and more so the duration since opening of the tunnel

Hampta Pass Trek is a crossover trek that is most popular for its breathtaking views and the stark contrast of landscape. The difference in landscape is noticeable just minutes apart from the lush green valley of Kullu to arid and barren mountains of Lahaul Valley. The trek is relatively easier than most other treks in Himachal Pradesh which makes it very much doable for everyone. Having said that one still needs preparation given that you reach as high as 14000ft during the trek.

MY STORY – AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE

As fun and enjoyable as the Hampta Pass Trek was, I cannot forget Day 2 because of the frightening experience that we had.

After the day’s trek, we had just reached Balu ka Ghera by 4pm. We settled in our tents and were clicking pictures. We were served hot soup (which is mandatory every evening before dinner). The soup is important here because, when we were served the soup, the weather was extremely clear and the sun was out. By the time we completed our soup, we were surrounded by clouds (Dark dark clouds). So just imagine how much time you’d take to drink a cup of soup and how much time it took for the clouds to appear from nowhere. It started raining in a couple of minutes. Wait, did I just say raining? Scratch that. It was pelting down. We felt as if someone was throwing stones on our tent. It was so loud and windy.

Meanwhile, our trekking guides were preparing for dinner. When the dinner was ready, we were asked to run and take the food to the tent. We ran around and by the time we returned to our tents, our plates were full of food, and rainwater. Yes, we ate that for the night. So it is always advisable to have some heavy snacks, sweets, or thepla (if you are a Gujju). One of our fellow trekker had loads of thepla so it helped us out.

And the worst is yet to come…

Continuing with the story, we were stuck in the tents and it was dark outside. The wind was literally swaying our tents and we were sitting holding the poles of our tent from inside. Heavy rains continued through the night. Even while sleeping, we had poles of our tent between the legs so it doesn’t blow away with wind. Yet, 3 tents blew away.

The KailashRath people were really helpful to come and check on us twice at night amidst the rain. All I can remember from that night is, I was praying to all the Gods that I know and was pleading to see the next morning. Sounds stupid, but with the extreme weather outside and having seen Kedarnath movie before the trek, it did seem real.

But, here comes the good thing. The next morning we wake up, what we see was mind blowing. The black stone mountains around us were completely white. We were told that it had snowed heavily on the higher campsites. All of this was during the Fany Cyclone that had hit India (May-June 2019). And this was the highest snowfall this place had received in last 20 years. Not a pleasant place to be in during that time.

About Hampta Pass Trek

Hampta Pass Trek is one of the most iconic treks in the 200+ defined trails in Himachal Pradesh . The Hampta Pass Trek is definitely on the easier side when compared to its peers. So, while the adrenaline pumping and jaw clenching feeling might not be something seasoned trekkers would experience, it is definitely a great way for beginners to get into the trekking mode.

Of course, this is not to say that seasoned trekkers won’t enjoy the trek – the sheer expanse of diversity in views will be worth the effort – from glacial valleys to lush green pastures – the journey has it all covered.

Duration and Location

The Hampta Pass Trek is a 5-6-day trek which starts from Manali in Himachal Pradesh. This beautiful trek is surrounded by amazing waterfalls, flowers, and maple forests. It’s’s best suited for beginners as it has enough of the adventurous feels attached to it. So, the Hampta Pass itself connects the “Valley of Gods” called Manali to “The Middle Land” called Spiti valley.

On one side, it’s’s surrounded by grasslands and splendors while another side is the raw deserted exquisiteness of Spiti. Usually, folks cross over from the Hampta Pass and head towards Chandratal Lake . On the last day, if the roads are open, then you’ll also get a chance to see the amazing Chandrataal lake.

Early June views of the Hampta Pass Trek

Best time to do Hampta pass trek

This Trek runs from June to September, but the best season to go for Hampta pass trek is from mid-June to September barring monsoon time. In the starting month of June, it may happen that the roads to Chandrataal Lake might not be open.

Getting to visit the crescent moon shaped lake, shining the sky across its surface is an unforgettable experience and should not be missed. Otherwise , you can do the Hampta pass trek anyways during this period.

Location of the base camp

Hampta Pass Trek starts from Jobra which is around 30 km from Manali. A large number of trekkers come on this beautiful trek to enjoy nature.

Weather at Hampta Pass

Summer or Monsoon season being the most preferred time for the trek, you will get to experience the fairy-tale of Himalayan weather. During the beginning of the season, you will hopefully experience snow around the region.

Snow starts melting around July, however, you should expect rain on the Manali side from the middle of July. Spiti Valley doesn’t experience monsoons as we know and you will get to experience bright sunshine (and metaphorical rainbows, unicorns, butterflies) in this period!

The maximum temperature at Hampta Pass trek remains in the range of 12 deg C to 20 deg C while the minimum temperature is from -6 deg C to 4 deg C.

Hampta Pass Weather

Having lived in the hills & having traveled extensively in beautifully weathered places (including the harshly cold winter months). I am a STRONG believer that weather is the solution to making people happy.

When it is hot (ala Delhi weather) and humid (like the weather in Mumbai), the natural tendency of the body (and the soul?) is to be irritated. Change the scenery, change the weather , and you will see everyone be happy & content with life! What do you think? Comment below!

Private Vehicle / Self Drive

Overall, the journey to the base camp of Hampta or Manali will take you 12-14 hour driving time. But, pit stops are a must – there is a TONNE of good food options on the road! And what is a road trip without good Dhaba food!

You can choose to take your vehicle or opt for one of the self-drive options available in Chandigarh and Delhi nowadays. However, do factor in the fact that you will be on a trek and not utilizing your car for 5+ days.

Hence, my best bet will be to use HPTDC Volvo buses to reach Manali and manage to travel to Jobra by other means.

Meadows & Valleys

Public Transport

So, this, in my opinion, is a better way to get to Manali for Hampt a Pass trek. You’ll not really be using your own vehicle for a better part of your journey, what’s the point of being stressed about its well-being? 😛

There is a large number of buses that run from Kashmiri Gate in Delhi to Manali. The bus starts from 5 Pm till night and takes around 13-14 hours to reach Manali.

You can book tickets on HPTDC or HRTC . There are multiple options available – ranging from non-AC to semi sleeper/Volvo and even Mercedes buses. Delhi – Manali Volvo fare range from 700 to 1600/-

Reaching Jobra from Manali

You will need to book a cab from Manali to Jobra – this will cost you around INR 2000.00. It is a thrilling ride with multiple hairpin bends, and the journey itself will take you about an hour.

Suggested Itinerary for Trek to Hampta Pass

So, you’ve decided to embark on this adventurous and soul-stirring experience to Hampta Pass. We are here to ensure that your experience is memorable and smooth flowing. Of course, nothing in the hills ever goes to your plan, for it is the hills that teach us that the universe plans for us & our plans mean nothing. However, when it comes to venturing into the wild, it is always good to have a basic understanding of how things will go.

Day 1 – Reach Manali, take rest and prepare

Take an overnight bus from Delhi in the evening and reach Manali in the morning by 8-9 AM. You can use public transport as per your choice. Stay over and explore Manali – it is indeed a beautiful town nestled in the hills with lots of culture and activities.

Of course, thanks to its natural beauty and relatively easier access, a lot of tourist activity goes on here, especially in the summer months. So, go about town and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the beautiful Himachali city.

You might also want to plan ahead of Hampta Pass trek. Your trek ends at Chattru and if you’re planning on covering Chandratal as well, you should make arrangements for a private cab to pick you up on a designated time & date at Chattru. More details below.

Also, if you’re not using a guide (which I highly recommend for beginner trekkers), you might want to rent basic camping and trekking equipment in Manali. You will also have to plan for your dietary requirements and pick up essential things you might require. Again, it might be easier/beneficial for you to hire a cook.

Day 2 | Manali – Jobra – Chika

And, so it begins! A real adventure – to call your own! Start early in the morning from Manali, post your daily routine, and a delicious breakfast (although, if you tend to get mountain/road sickness, it is better to eat lighter- you’ll be covering a path that has lots of twists & turns). As I said before, Jobra is around 30 Km from Manali and takes an hour to reach there.

If you have booked from any Travel Agency, then they’ll pick you up at Manali. As this is your first day, you’ll ease into the trekking life. Overall, on this day, you will be doing a 2-3-hour trek from Jobra. Once your trek for the day is complete, you’ll reach your first Campsite – Chika. As there are plenty of water sources throughout the trek, you don’t need to worry about your hydration needs. However, please carry a water bottle and keep the area as clean as possible, filling up your bottle when needed.

Also, Chika is one of those places that you’re allowed to pitch your tent where you please. I would suggest planning and moving in a way that allows you to reach Chika by 4 PM. Of course, cooking food in the open vistas will be an amazing experience. Alternatively, you can carry a packed lunch from Manali. Correspondingly, you can book the entire trek with a guide/agency, and they will be able to provide you with campsites and food as well.

Day 3 | Chika – Jwara – Balu Ka Gera

Now that you’re used to the daily grind, this day’s trek is a little longer in comparison to the first day. But this day guarantees some spectacular views! Of course, the earlier you start on the day, the better. But, don’t flag off too late

Jwara – 9 AM should be the cut off for you to leave Chika. Certainly, wake up earlier and enjoy the sunrise and breakfast with the views! During the day, you will cross a Nala to reach Jwara. Here, you will witness two valleys intersecting in the middle of the landscape at a certain point. What an absolute geometric perfection! Post-Jwara, you will reach Balu ka Gera, where you will witness a lot of snow.

Is it possible to make a trip to Ladakh using public transport?

Should I camp at Jwara or Balu Ka Gera?

At the end of the day’s hard work, you can choose to pitch tents at either Jwara or Balu ka Gera. Jwara is a strikingly picturesque & cantered valley, which gives you some pretty views of green fields and waterfalls. While Balu ka Gera is a flat ground amidst the snowy mountains at 11,000 ft.

I suggest you stay at Balu ka Gera because it’s’s near to the Hampta Pass. After reaching Balu ka Gera, you can enjoy the rest of the day, taking in the views and exploring your new home for the day. The water sources are also available throughout the day’s trek after little distances, so you don’t need to fret about that. Regroup, rewind, and reminisce.

Day 4 | Summit Hampta Pass

Here we are, the epitome of your trek. Nothing worth having comes easy, and this day will prove to be a grind. As you’ll have to cross the Hampta Pass today and reach to Shea Goru, you need to have a high energy level, grit, and determination.

Don’t let the mountain intimidate you, kid! Pump yourself up, and get on with the journey. Reaching Hampta Pass will take you around four hours. The difficulty level here is increasing in comparison to the previous days. Again, I emphasize that you need to leave as early as you can in the AM. This trick will ensure you have ample time and are not rushing around to reach your destination for the night – Shea Goru.

Pro Tip : Attentiveness is the key to trekking – by getting an extra dose of Zzzzs in the morning, you won’t be doing yourself any favor.

Does it get difficult here?

Right up till the Hampta Pass, the trail will be steep and filled with snow, at least till June and maybe a splattering of snow in July. Also, word of advice – carry sufficient water from Balu ka Gera as there are no water sources till your next destination. And, water will be very much needed; you’re climbing UP a hill to reach a high pass!

The moment you reach the top of Hampta Pass, the scenery evolves into something you probably wouldn’t have experienced. We tend to associate the Himalayas with lush greenery and as fertile land with lots to give. Watching the stark contrast of barren mountains unveil itself as you move along is an extraordinary experience.

Once you’ve had your fill of the view and your heart is satisfied (never going to happen, but still!), you should start your journey towards Shea Goru and enjoy the Spiti part of this trek.

Day 5 | Shea Goru – Chatru

The climax! This day is the day you get to decide whether you want to move further ahead and experience Chandratal or not. Either way, you will have to reach your end of the Trek at Chattru. Chattru will take you around 4 hours from Shea Goru. This part of the trek has plenty of water sources, so don’t fret!

Now, comes decision time. If you choose to head to Chandratal – you will need to book a vehicle in advance. This will need to be done in Manali prior to you starting your trek. OR, you may choose to head back to Manali from Spiti to commemorate your escapade.

Can I get a bus back to Manali from Chatru?

Buses do ply on the Chattru Manali route, leaving around 11 AM. However, the timing is not hell-bound fixed and depends on Weather Gods, Landslide Gods, Other Gods (Hey! You’re in the Land of Gods, aka Dev Bhoomi Himachal – don’t think your plan will work – His plan works!). Anyways, based on the blessings of the many Gods, you’ll be able to catch your bus and move back to Manali.

You will need to plan your morning trek accordingly to reach on time and catch the bus, however. Similar to if you want to head to Chandratal, you can also book a cab in advance in Manali for a return journey.

The return journey to Manali takes you through the Rohtang Pass – it will be a shock to the system looking at the hordes of tourists on the pass after having spent your previous days in the lap of nature.

Early Mornings & Sunrises

Accommodation at Hampta Trek

You’ll have to carry your camping gear or tents if you are doing this trek by yourself. There are no options for renting the tent between the trek. However, you can take camps or tents at rent from Manali. Or you can hire porters to carry your tent from Manali. While at Manali, there are enough options available to stay from luxurious cottages to dorm hostels.

Once you are at Chatru, you can also plan to stay at PWD Guest House.

Food during Hampta Pass Trek

There are also no food options available during the Trek to Hampta Pass. There are few cafes at the starting point Jobra, one shop at Chika, and one at Chattru. But leaving this, there are no choices of food. It is better to hire a cook and rent all the necessary items itself from Manali, or you can book the whole package, and you’ll have nothing to worry about.

Make sure you carry enough munchies, snack/energy bars, and dry fruits to keep your energy levels high during the entire trek.

Other things regarding the Hampta Pass Trek

As usual, there are a couple of things to keep in mind which I will enlist down below.

ATM availability

ATMs are available at Manali only. But once you cross Manali, there are no options. Also, you’re on a trek – needless to say, you’re away from civilization. It is better to carry enough cash to complete the entire trek and make the payment as well.

Mobile signals at Hampta Pass Trek

Jobra is the last place where the network is available. It also does not have a stable connection so it’s better to leave all your worries and enjoy this beautiful trek. You can read a detailed guide for mobile networks in Spiti Valley .

Should I get a local guide for Hampta Pass trek?

You must take a guide with you unless you are a professional & seasoned trekker in the Himalayas. It is especially easy to get lost in the woods in the Himalayas and not know left from right! So, it is better to take a local villager or a guide who will not only show you the path but also save you in the bad weather conditions. Also, they have a tonne of knowledge and can be great storytellers – a must for treks!

You can hire porter, cook and guide from Manali itself. You can rent the required equipment like tents, sleeping bags, and the food items too from Manali.

  • Carry the required woolen clothes and a raincoat with yourself for this trek. The weather might get bad at that altitude, so it is better to carry all the things.
  • Waterproof trekking shoes are must need for this trek; otherwise, you’ll face a lot of trouble while trekking.
  • Ensure you inform your friends/family of your whereabouts and itinerary before embarking in the journey. Your fun should not be a headache of the cause of anxiety for your loved ones!

  • Overview & Itinerary

The Hampta Pass is an amazing trek for all levels of experience. It offers a thrilling High Himalayan Pass crossing with beautiful views from the top, encompassing the lush green valleys of Kullu and Manali, and the semi-arid area of the Lahaul valley. This path may not be an easy one, but there are still fewer challenges than some other treks in India. Whilst being moderately challenging in parts and weather-changeable, it is also one of the shortest and most enjoyable treks to be had in the country.

The gem Hampta pass journey offers unmatched variety and excitement along the trail to take care of any exhaustion, starting in the gorgeous Manali Valley, just a short ride from the city of Manali. As we hike through the lush green landscape of the first two days, we pass numerous meadows inhabited by local shepherds and one camp at an amazing location. It is a very relaxing stage.

We traverse the wild terrain, from rivers and streams to waterfalls. Along the way, you will find a mix of pine, deodar, spruce, horse chestnut, oak, and birch trees, while also encountering sheep, shepherd dogs, and birds such as white-capped redstart and whistling thrush. Depending on when you visit you may see various Alpine flowers too. The toughest leg of this journey takes us to Hampta Pass; a route that might require boulder riding and climbing snow-covered slopes under certain conditions. When you get there, be sure to take in the breathtaking view of nearby peaks like Deo tibba and Indrasana – a marvellous experience that will forever remain in your memory.

Best Time to Visit:  If you're planning to go on the Hampta Pass trek, the best time to visit is from June to September. During these months, the weather is pleasant and perfect for trekking. However, if you plan to go after September, it's not recommended to trek alone due to the extreme cold. And if you're planning to go after October, be prepared for heavy snow in the area. For a hassle-free trekking experience, consider booking with Trekkaro, a reliable and experienced trekking company.

Trek Itinerary

In the morning, we go to the dam site in Jobra and walk through a very pleasant landscape from here. The walk will initially take us through a mixed forest consisting of spruce, pines, deodar, chestnut and maple trees. We cross a beautiful meadow, where a cushy shepherd live. If shepherd bridge is not built somewhere along the river, then we have to cross the river at a convenient place. We cross the river and climb a beautiful meadow called Chika. Today's trek is gentle and will take about 2 hours. After resting for some time it would be advisable to walk a short distance near a nearby waterfall, which also hosts several white capped redstarts.

Note:-  Trekkers are required to take only those VOLVO buses which reach Manali by 09:00 AM on the first day. Our reporting time is 10:00 AM at  Manali Bus Stand  but if you are unable to arrive at the meeting / briefing time, we will either transfer your seat to any of our next batches or we will cancel your trek, so please Double check your bus time your bus transporter. Overnight in tents.

Today is an interesting day. We cross the stream immediately after the campsite and begin to gain elevation and continue towards a gorge section, heading towards the river on the right. We will pass through the Boulder section, crossing the wildflower-filled plains, a waterfall and a side river, which may require careful handling to reach Balu Ka Ghera campsite. This hike will take about 6 hours with some breaks in between. This campsite with a network of river channels and large mountains all around it. We relax at the campsite and charge to climb the Hampta Pass the next day. Overnight stay in tents.

Today the weather and trail conditions will decide what time we leave, but it will be sure to get up early in the morning. Depending on the weather and weather conditions, walking is likely to be partially / completely on snow. From the camp we start with a steep climb up the creepy slopes to reach a ridge and from here we proceed to another ridge which leads to the pass. This climb will take about 4-5 hours and one will be rewarded with views of the whole world. The peaks of Indrasana and Deo Tibba completely dominate the landscape and the ranges towards Lahaul seem quite majestic. The descent is a little trickier than climbing. It can also vary slightly depending on the snow conditions. Overnight stay in camps.

It is a gentle downhill walk beginning with Shea Goru. You still walk along the river in the valley between the mountain ranges. After an hour you can see the Chhatru road just a short distance away. The mountains in front of it are barren with specs of greenery - a typical Lahaul look. As you get closer to the road, the descent becomes a bit tricky. You will need to cross the edges of the cliffs and sometimes it can be easy to leave the rocky section and descend into the river / glacier bed below to get back up. You are still at a height, but you have the road right and the Chandra river separates you from the road. Two to three huge glacial flows from the mountains merge downward into the Chandra River. You will need to cross these glaciers to reach campsite that contains water.

From Chhatru, drive in vehicles to the majestic Chandratal. And after soaking in the peaceful vibes of the Chandrataal Lake, return back to Chhatru campsite. Please note that due to landslides or snowfall, the route to Chandratal is sometimes blocked. If the road is found closed then Chandratal drive will not be done. Overnight stays in tents.

On the last day, after having breakfast at Chhatru campsite, transportation will be arranged for trekkers accordingly and head back to Manali which is a 3-4 hours’ drive from Chhatru. You can take a halt at any midpoint for lunch (exclusive of trek cost). Once the team reach Manali, trekkers can make their further travel accordingly.

Note:-  While booking return bus tickets, it is recommended to book from Manali after 4 pm to have some buffer time as there are traffic possibilities on the way to Manali.

Trekkaro team will specifically ensure your safety with...

1.  Daily oxygen saturation & pulse reading (if required in trek) :- We go on treks that feature a different lifestyle to the one we typically lead. Everyday living generally overlooks healthy habits, yet when it comes to trekking and surviving in an unfamiliar environment for more than a day, our bodies must adapt. Oxygen saturation measures the ratio of oxygen-saturated hemoglobin to total hemoglobin in the bloodstream. To ensure everyone remains in good health, our team will carry out oxygen saturation and pulse readings before we set off. Everyone must be conscious of their well-being.

2.  Oxygen cylinders and medical kit :- During high-altitude treks, the body does not get enough oxygen. It isn't always that you cannot survive high-altitude treks, but to be safe, we are always prepared with oxygen cylinders in case you are not accustomed to the environment. On the trek, one of our team members carries an oxygen cylinder and all the essential medicines.

To prevent high altitude conditions - Exercise, cycle, and swim more to prevent high altitude conditions. The more you practice, the easier it will be.

3.  Stretchers on every campsite :- Even though we are physically and mentally prepared for the environment, accidents or uncertain situations still happen. In those cases, we have stretchers at each campsite, so in case of emergency, porters will drop you safely to base camp where we can do further treatment.

4.  High-Quality Trek Gears and Equipment :- High-Quality Trekking Gears and Equipment Trekkaro is the only trekking company in the world that provides Free Trekking Gear (FTG) at no charge/rent only for use during the treks. Decathlon Quechua Trek 100 Shoes, Quechua SH 100/300 Jackets, Trekking Poles, Crampons, and Gaiters are some of the more expensive FTG. Now, before registering for the trek, there is no need to think about the expensive trekking gear, and also, you do not have to buy or rent expensive trekking gear to go on a trek.

You can survive in extreme cold with Trekkaro's quality tents and sleeping bags. Our sleeping bags can hold cold up to -5 to -20 degrees Celsius. Tents are always warmer, so Trekkaro can provide you with quality shelter.

Although we are prepared for the storm, you should let us know if anything concerns you regarding safety.

5.  Radio (for communication between camps and guides) :- Our camps are a bit far from each other. But they connect through radio, although there is a problem with the network in the hills. If you miss anything, if the weather is bad, or if we require medical help from the base, we can still communicate via radio.

6.  Technical team on all snowy slopes All treks come with an adventure. However, safety is an important aspect of all treks. We ensure the turn with our technical team whenever we find risky slopes or areas. We already mentioned that our team is well-trained and knows how to handle hassles in emergencies.

Expectations

When you take an adventurous trek with us, then be assured that whatever we do is more than your expectations. Our wish to excel goes beyond the point where your boots hit the trail – it begins the moment that you get in contact with us, and it never ends. There is nothing more satisfying than hearing from our trekkers that they’ve just had “another trip of a lifetime with Trekkaro ”.

Your Expectations

•  Safety  Of course, this is a non-negotiable. Safety is embedded in our business and it’s something that we take very seriously in all our treks. It's the primary reason we're very popular in just a year.

•  Personalized Service, Care, and Attention to Detail  For some organizations, this is, surprisingly, negotiable. But it isn’t for us. After safety, if we can do one thing right, every time, it’s to ensure that we sweat the small things.

•  The Best Guides  If you are already trekking with us, then you’d be forgiven for thinking our guides are superhuman. It doesn’t mean a feat to entertain, cook, guide, and facilitate, but our guides, handle it with grace, and all the while the attention is on you.

•  The Best Itineraries  It takes a lot of refinement to make a perfect trek, from dawn to dusk there are a lot of moving parts and the potential for things to go awry. For the last year, we’ve balanced on the tightrope of offering the right amount of activity, flexibility, and trek time. Whilst utilizing the best lodgings in the most unique places.

•  Value  We’re not in the business of making money and providing you with nothing. Our treks aren’t expensive, they represent excellent value for money, and for those seeking to maximize their time, there is no better way.

Our Expectations

It may come as a surprise, but the reality is that it is a two-way street (or trail), and you are ultimately responsible for the nature of the experience that you have with us. And not only that, but you also influence the experience of others in your small group.

•  Attitude  This is your vacation, and the attitude that you bring will set the tone for your experience. We get that at times it’s difficult (we plan to challenge you) and we get that at times it’s a bit uncomfortable (this is not a cruise trip). All we ask you to keep an open mind, a big smile on your face, and readiness for the unexpected.

•  Physical preparedness Our treks are designed for everyday people. You don’t have to be an athlete, but to be fair to yourself and your group members, you do need to be ready. Worried about it? Do not stress it, our team is 100% dedicated to helping you pick the right trek, bring the right gear, and be physically and mentally prepared.

•  Know who’s in charge  As we’ve mentioned, you rightly expect when you join our trek to be in good, safe hands. For us to ensure the entire group’s safety, we suppose you, as our guest, to listen to your lead guide. They are the expert when it comes to decisions made on the trek.

Weather And Temperature On Hampta Pass

The weather on Hampta pass changes as you progress from late summer/early monsoon (June) to autumn (end of September).

When the trek opens up for the summer in June, it is a very short season. And despite it being summers, expect snow patches on the ground. Especially close to Balu Ka Ghera and above it is still snow bound.

Expect cold nights at your higher camps. Temperature during the night can drop to around zero but generally will hover around 1-5° C. The day temperatures are usually very pleasant on the trek at an average of 15-20° C. If the sun goes behind the clouds and there is a bout of rain, then the temperature can fall to around 10° C.

July and August

As we head into July, monsoons arrive. Prepare yourself for some rain while on the trail or at the campsites. Keep your ponchos easily accessible as it can rain anytime and mostly it does.

You will also have to pack differently for a monsoon trek.

However, once you cross the pass you’re in the rain shadow region. There’s a very slim chance of it raining on the Lahaul valley side of the trek.

Temperatures more or less remain the same as in July, with cloud cover bringing the temperatures down to 10° C.

But as we move closer to September the weather improves. The weather is pleasantly sunnier and the days are warmer too.

By early to mid September the monsoon season is over. The skies are at their clearest blue with a very little chance of rain.

Having said that, expect a 3-5° C drop in temperature every couple of weeks as we head closer to winter months of October and onward.

A picture-perfect hill station situated at an altitude of 1929 meters above sea level. You can arrive anytime after 11 am in Manali and check in to guesthouse. You can also rent/buy trek gears from Mall road. Stay overnight at hotel.

Meal - Dinner

  • Altitude:  9,379 ft (2,859 m) to 11,194 ft (3,412 m)
  • Time taken:  5 hours, 5 km
  • Trek gradient:  Easy-moderate. Easy walk to Chika for about an hour followed by 2 hours of ascent through a boulder section. Descent for 1-1.5 hours easing off into a level walk.
  • Water sources:  Carry sufficient water from Jobra. You can refill your water bottles from the river along the trail.

The meadow near Jobra has the Rani Nallah or Rani river flowing in between and on either side, you will see hills with rock faces. Some cows and sheep graze in the meadow which is lined with Maple and Pine trees. Early in the season one may find some snow by the side of the river. You can traverse on the meadow or climb up the left hill. The climb makes the path slightly shorter. The river flows right in the middle and water is no issue. You can take a break here - Chika.

Jwara is to the right of Chikha, and can be identified by a couple of waterfalls in the distance. Head right but stay on the left bank of the river throughout. The initial climb is mainly through stones and boulders. The going is never too difficult. The right bank of the river is laced with dwarf Rhododendrons in the lower and middle region of the mountain and Birch trees grow at the upper end.

Look back and you will see the Dhauladhar range with its snow-clad peaks. It makes a pretty picture. You will find a waterfall on to your left. Relax and replenish your water supplies at this spot.

After the waterfall, you move towards your right, heading towards the river, which has a lot of boulders around it. Take off your shoes if you wish and jump across the rocks on the Rani Nallah. The water is icy cold as one would expect. You are now about halfway through your trek as you enter a walled valley. On one side of the valley are the rock faces and on the other end is the river below. Once you cross the river, you are at Jwara where nature is at her dramatic best.

Meal Inclusions : Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • Altitude:  11,194 ft (3,412 m) to 12,411 ft (3,783 m)
  • Time taken:  4-5 hours, 4.5 km
  • Trek gradient:  Moderate. Short meadow walk followed by boulder section for a couple of hours, leading to a trail on loose rocks all the way. Very gradual incline through the day.
  • Water sources:  Carry sufficient water. You will find streams along the trail to refill your water bottles.

The river has snow flows melting and feeding it while numerous sheep and mules feed on the green grass. In front are snow-clad mountains beyond which lies the Hampta Pass.

Walk along the Rani river heading into a rectangular valley. On your way, you will find a variety of tiny flowers - purple, yellow, pink etc. The trees are now left behind. You won’t find them anymore for quite some time. It takes about half an hour to cross the hamta valley.

After you come out of Jwara, you need to walk further along. The terrain flattens as you reach Chota Balu ka Ghera where you can rest for a bit and have a quick snack. Then continue further along the river, crossing small snow flows and jumping across rocks.Towards the end, the rocks are quite far apart and jumping across gets tricky. Soon after, you will reach the destination for the day – Balu Ka Ghera or the bed of sand. The ground is formed mainly by the sand and dust brought down by the river.

It is level ground and behind you are the mountains you will traverse the next day to cross the Hampta Pass. Pitch your tent and enjoy a beautiful sunset behind the Hanuman Tibba peak. You are now close to 12,500 ft above sea level.

  • Altitude: 12,411 ft (3,921 m) to 12,864 ft (3,735 m) via 14,065 ft (4,287 m)
  • Time taken: 9 hours, 5 km
  • Trek gradient: Moderate. An hour of gradual ascent after which the trail becomes steep uphill till the pass, interspersed with short descents. 2 hours of steep descent from the pass, easing off into a flat walk.
  • Water sources: None. Carry 2 litres of water from Balu ka Ghera. Late season streams likely once the snow melts.

Today’s trek can be broken into two stages - the climb to Hampta Pass which is moderately steep followed by a steep descent to Shea Goru. You will want to take a small break at the top of the pass to make it your target to reach the pass by lunchtime, have lunch there and then start the descent.

You begin your day by heading towards the mountains from Balu Ka Ghera. You may get a pleasant surprise with lots of tiny pink and yellow flowers growing by the side of the river. Move along the river for an hour after which you will be above it. At some points, the trail may fade out so be careful not to get lost. Stay with your team.

After an hour of a gentle gradient in a rock fall prone area, the climb picks up. This is the first serious incline you will encounter. Half an hour into the climb, you will reach the first plateau. Here you get to see the Deo Tibba peak right in front of you. If you are here during early summer, there is a good chance that this entire section is filled with snow. At other times, you may get only some patches of snow.

Take a breath, wait for your team to catch up and begin the next ascent. This is another inclined part which has two stages to it and finally ends at the ridge. The climb will take you 20-30 minutes. From the top of the ridge, you will see another parallel one, which is your next destination. Hampta Pass is a bend away from the top of the second ridge.

Before descending down to the side of the second ridge, continue walking on the first ridge for a small distance to get a 360-degree view of the intriguing mountain peaks like Peak 5260 surrounding you. This is a good spot for a panoramic shot. After descending down and 15 minutes of going by the side, you begin the vertical climb which gets over in 20 minutes. You may be panting at the end of it but you are almost there at 14,000 ft, atop the Hampta Pass.

The descent is slightly trickier than the ascent. It can vary slightly depending on the snow condition too. Sliding down may be an option if there is snow. From the pass, take a turn towards the right. You can see the Lahaul side of the pass below. Go down in a zig-zag route and then stick to the right flank of the mountain. You will have to walk over slippery soil and stones too. In half an hour the first downhill run is done.

A u-turn brings you right below the pass. From here it is a straight downhill trek on snow; you could also follow the zig-zag path down until you hit the valley below. In an hour and a half, you will be at the base of the valley. Tall snow-clad mountains surround you from three sides and the open side leads you to Shea Goru.

Shea Goru is an almost level walk from here. It should be an easy walk though some may find it tiring after the long day traversing the pass. You will find the river again, flowing to your right. Choose a nice camp site close to the river and retire happily for the day after crossing the Hampta Pass.

  • Altitude:  12,864 ft (3,735 m) to 10,898 ft (3,322 m) to 14,100 ft (4,298 m)
  • Time taken:  4 – 4.5 hours; 6 km
  • Trek gradient:  Moderate. 2-2.5 hours of walking on moraine and loose rocks on gentle inclines, followed by a descent to Chhatru across a couple of glacial flows.
  • Water sources:  Carry sufficient water from Shea Goru. You will find a few sources on the way to refill your water bottles.

As you move closer to the road, the descent gets a little tricky. You will need to traverse by the edges of rocks and sometimes it might just be easier to get down into the river/glacier bed below to skip the rocky section and get back up.

There are also a couple of places with slippery soil. So you need to be nimble and hop down them to prevent yourself from sliding. This section would take 2½ – 3 hours when you are out of the mountains. You are still at a height but you have the road right across and the Chandra river separating you from the road.

Two to three huge glacial flows come down from the mountains on the side to the Chandra river. You will need to cross these streams to reach a camping spot which has water. Choose a camping spot close to one of the numerous streams that join the river. Chhatru is a lovely camping site. You get lovely views of the different mountain ranges. The Chandra river flows in speed right below.

If the roads are clear and devoid of snow, a visit to Chandratal, the moon lake is a must when you are in Spiti. Chhatru is about 70 km away from Chandratal. You will take a vehicle to Chandratal from Chhatru. The journey takes about 3 hours and the road is quite bumpy, so it is advised that you start well before 3:00 PM. Those who have motion sickness, don't forget to take Avomine tablets.

Please note that the road to Chandratal is extremely dusty and can lead to a problem if you are asthmatic.

If you have some energy to spare, walk up the hill next to Chandratal. From the top, apart from being able to identify the moon shape of the lake, you'll be able to see a second lake out in the distance surrounded with scenic peaks like the CB-13.

Since Chandratal is at an altitude of 14,100 ft there are good chances of being hit by Acute Mountain Sickness if you're not well hydrated.

Remember, the excursion to Chandrataal and back (if accessible) is completely optional. But we do recommend to visit the lake if the weather & road condition permit.

In late summers, the road opens up to Chhatru and beyond. If you are early or late in the season, Chandratal may be ruled out and you may have to walk on the road to a place where the road has been cleared off its snow flows.

Please note that as a part of the Hampta Pass trek, you'll not be camping at Chandrataal. After a late afternoon-early evening visit to Chandratal, you'll come back to Chattru and camp there for the night before heading to Manali the next day

4-5 hours drive. You are expected to reach Manali around 12.00 pm. The cost of transport from Chattru to Manali will be Rs. 9,000 per vehicle.

After an early morning debriefing, bid the Spiti valley goodbye and head back to Manali. The journey from Chhatru to Manali passes through Rohtang Pass and can take up to 4 hours. The scenery all through the route is a treat in itself.

According to ancient literature, when the Pandavas made their way to heaven they traveled on the route through Hampta Pass. Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata epic, is thought to have been taken to heaven in his mortal form from Chandratal.
