View Arthur's Seat
Not far from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, you’ll find a taste of Scotland's wild countryside. Hike up windswept hills alive with heather flower in bloom, and sit atop an ancient volcano watching the sprawling city below.
Hear the story of the Royal Yacht Britannia
Step aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia and discover what royal glamor looks like at sea. The British Monarch’s boat for over 40 years, this extravagant watercraft is now permanently docked in Edinburgh. Spend a few hours exploring the vessel to see where the Princes spent their summers and world leaders and celebrities were once entertained.
Watch a Highland dance or two
There’s nothing quaint about the Scottish pastime of a Highlands dance. Walk into a pub and be enlivened by the many folk musicians playing fiddles, flutes, drums and accordions all around the Isles. You can watch with your pint or let the driving rhythms take you dancing. Either way, you’ll feel connected to the true spirit of Scotland.
Our top 5 things to do in Scotland
You'll uncover plenty of natural beauty and human history on our vibrant trips to Scotland. Stroll Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile, climb the rugged hills of Arthur's Seat and journey through the Highland wilderness.
Edinburgh Castle
The ancient walls of Edinburgh Castle have been touched by soldiers, kings, queens and even the odd pirate. Immerse yourself in Scottish history, gazing at crown jewels worn by Mary Queen of Scots and wooden doors vandalized by prisoners of war. Don’t miss the 1 o'clock gun that rings out over Edinburgh.
National Museum of Scotland
This unassuming Victorian building is brimming with history of Scotland and the world. Discover the wonders of nature, art, design, science and technology through this diverse collection. Spend a day wandering from room to room, never running short of things to learn.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum
Enjoy a captivating lesson in life and expression at Kelvingrove. Delve into natural history, arms and armor, fine art and everything between. From the Spitfire plane hanging from the ceiling of the west court to the collections of the Glasgow Boys and Salvador Dali in the east, this space will leave you spellbound.
Best museums in Scotland
Spend hours and days fascinated by the stories held in the museums of Scotland. Trafalgar's picks will prove these enthralling institutions shouldn't be saved for a cloudy day.
Originally served as a hearty meal to Scots on long journeys across Highland hills and heather-clad moors, the nation still loves Haggis. And with its rustic flavor and peppery kick, you will too. Have a taste and wash it down with a wee dram.
Cullen Skink
Hailing from the town of Cullen, this soup was made to warm the cockles of weary fishermen. Hence it’s made thick, creamy and comforting. With chunks of velvety leeks, potato and smoked fish, this smooth and flavorful meal is not to be missed.
Scottish Whisky
The Scottish isles are home to one of the world's most revered spirits - whisky. Speyside malts, smokey Islay drams and smooth blends can all be found here. Try it in a local pub or an award winning distillery. Either way, there's nothing quite like the taste of Scotch in the land where it was made.
Best food in Scotland
If it seems like Scottish cuisine is designed to warm your insides, that’s because it is. Come sunshine or rain, the dishes you'll enjoy on our trips are just another reason to love Scotland.
What to pack for Scotland
Walking shoes
Something comfortable and flat, with grip. There's a lot of exploring to do and the hills of Scotland are just as abundant in the cities as they are in the countryside.
Something warm
Even in the height of summer the Scottish night air has a bite. To make the most of your Scotland adventure, bring along a quality coat or jacket.
Woollen socks
A couple of pairs of woollen socks will serve you well in Scotland. They're warm and thick but surprisingly light to carry, perfect for protecting feet from long walks or the country’s beloved cold stone floors.
Prepare to sample the finest whisky distilleries around with hydralytes. Enjoy a tipple or two or three and you will still be fresh for adventures the following morning.
When planning a trip to Scotland, plan to pack less. Leave some space to bring home some of their specialties like shortbread for friends and cashmere for yourself.

Let Scotland's lochs and highlands enchant you
There's a reason a unicorn is the symbol of Scotland—it's a land of pure magic. Travel there with CIE Tours to discover every enchanting vista, from the heather-covered Highlands to the depths of Loch Ness. Explore the rich Scottish culture, beyond the traditions of tartan, whisky and bagpipes. Let us introduce you to the charms of Scotland.
With its medieval Old Town, chic Georgian New Town, and timeless views from Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh is truly the romantic heart of Scotland.
The Scottish capital's "Old Town" retains much of its medieval-era charm—and wandering the streets and exploring the shops is a popular thing to do in Edinburgh.
Military Tattoo
One of the most popular things to do in Edinburgh is this August event—a grand tradition that began after World War II, with drum and pipe corps from around the world performing.
- Edinburgh Castle
Walk in the footsteps of soldiers, kings and queens, and even the odd pirate or two at this unforgettable Scottish destination.
This medieval-era royal residence, military garrison, prison and fortress, is alive with many exciting tales.
- Isle of Skye
One of the largest of Scotland's 790 islands, Isle of Skye features colorful port towns and villages, and dramatic, stony landscapes.
- Dunvegan Castle
This medieval fortress rises up majestically from a promontory on the Isle of Skye.
Whisky Distillery
One of Scotland's most legendary creations is its fine Scotch whisky—and many CIE Tours of Scotland feature distillery tours where you can sample a dram or two and see how it's created.
A wild storm nearly two centuries ago unearthed this seaside Neolithic village of stone, dating to between 3200 and 2200 BC.
Scottish Highlands
The best time to catch the Highlands heather in full bloom is late August into September. But you can taste it year round in heather ale and Scottish honey—the bees often rely on heather pollen for their food source.
The Old Course at St Andrews is the very first golf course in the world, dating back to the 1400s.
- Stirling Castle
Scotland's grand castle played a key role in both Scottish and English history, and many of the most famous Scots, including Mary Queen of Scots and Robert Bruce, once dwelled within its walls.
- Iron Age House
The sea helped bring this nearly intact Pictish village to light, just 25 years ago.
Quaint Culross lets visitors step back in time to the 17th and 18th centuries for a taste of what life was like for its inhabitants. It's served as a backdrop for many scenes in the series Outlander.
- Loch Lomond
Loch Lomond is the largest lake by area in all of Scotland, at more than 24 miles in length. You'll find Scotland's famous red deer and other wildlife along its shores.
Callanish Stones
These mysterious Neolithic "standing stones" in the Outer Hebrides may be older than Stonehenge.
The depths of this lovely Scottish lake contain more fresh water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined—and perhaps, if the legends are true, "Nessie," the Loch Ness Monster.
- Urquhart Castle
Some of Scotland's most stirring history has taken place at this magisterial fortress overlooking Loch Ness.
This historic climbing hut is an icon in black and white against the green hills of Glencoe.

Tour of Britain visits Scotland for grand finale
The 2021 tour of britain will visit scotland for the final two stages this weekend. with hawick, edinburgh, stonehaven, and aberdeen hosting the stage starts and finishes, we thought it would be apt to preview the route and some of the best places to watch the racing..
Stage 7 – Hawick to Edinburgh (194.8km)
While the Scottish Borders is no stranger to the race, Hawick will make its debut as a host venue in 2021, joining Jedburgh, Peebles and Kelso in welcoming the Tour. The 195km stage will feature three official climbs the first of which is the Cat 3 climb at Berrybush – a gradual 2.7km rise at 4% average gradient near Ettirck, before the first intermediate Sprint in Innerleithen. The race heads North before a turn for the East, which takes in the slightly harder Cat 2 climb of Stow Hill (3.1km at 5.1%), with the second sprint on the descent into Lauder at 97km into the stage.
The final sprint prime of the day comes in Duns with just over 70km to go, the route then takes a turn to the North-West as it aims for the capital, but not before the peloton hits final climb of the stage at Wanside Rig – a Cat 2, 4.1km climb with an average gradient of 3.6%. The final 40km are on the rolling terrain of East Lothian before finishing in Edinburgh. The final comes through the Southside of the city before entering the grounds of Holyrood Park – finishing on Queens Drive in a similar final kilometre to that of the final stage of the Women’s Tour of Scotland in 2018.
The route can be viewed in more detail here.
Our Prediction:
The difficulty of Stage 6 through the Pennines for the General Classification teams (won by Wout van Aert) could make Stage 7 the ample opportunity for another breakaway success. It will be a battle between break and bunch for a sprint, however we are tempted to lean towards a successful breakaway, especially if a tailwind manifests.
Where to Watch:
The summit of Wanside Rig with its vast openness would be an ample viewing point to watch the fight for the KOM point and may possibly be used as and springboard for attacks if the wind is blowing. However, the openness of the Rig does make it exposed to the Scottish weather and so it is advised to check the weather forecast beforehand . Please feel free to send in your photos and videos from the side of the road to @ScottishCycling on Twitter and Instagram.
As with all stages of this years’ Tour, the stage will be available to watch from flag to finish on ITV4 and ITV Hub with a nightly highlights programme at 8pm.
Stage 8: Stonehaven – Aberdeen (173km)
The race heads north to Aberdeenshire for its grand finale which will be the furthest north the race has ever visited in its current incarnation. Although Aberdeen is no stranger to elite racing with the Granite City hosting several rounds of the Tour Series in recent years.
Stonehaven will host the start of the stage before the race heads South towards Fettercairn. The race will then turn back north to face one of Scotland’s most infamous climbs – the Cairn o’Mount. Topping out at 450m, the 3.2km Category 1 climb has an average gradient of 9.5% but also has pitches of over 25% and is arguably Scotland’s most exposed climb.
The race route will then head toward the sprint at Finzean, which also marks the start of the second climb of the day – the Category 3 climb to the Corsedardar Monument which is 2.8km long at a much more manageable 4.2% average gradient. The race will continue to kick west with sprints in Aboyne and Ballater coming at 69 and 88km mark. The final sprint is quickly followed by a turn to the east as the race will then aim for the final climb of the Tour – the attritional ramp of Queens View – the Category 3 climb is 5km in length but only boasts an average gradient of 3%.
Whilst the final 65km do not feature any categorised climbs, it certainly is not pan flat terrain, the peloton will eventually see the Granite City for the first time after exiting Westhill with 18km to go. The finish in the city will see the riders head towards the city centre via Queens Road, before heading north onto King Street. The route sees the riders head all the way to Bridge of Don before cutting back onto the esplanade, which makes up the final straight last 2km of flat, exposed running to the line at the Beach Ballroom.
The route can be viewed in more detail here .
Although the massive climb of Cairn O’Mount is on the route it probably comes too early in the stage to cause any major lasting splits in the bunch. We expect a final reduced bunch sprint on the Esplanade in Aberdeen.
Where to watch:
The obvious place to watch the racing will be Cairn o’Mount and many are planning to ride out to the climb to watch. However, it is worth remembering that the B974 Cairn o’Mount Road will be closed to vehicles from 6pm on Saturday 11 September until after the race has passed on Sunday 12 September. Click here for details of spectator parking for the climb. The Cairn is very exposed to the Scottish weather and so it is advised to check the weather forecast beforehand .
As with all stages of this years’ Tour, the stage will be available to watch from flag to finish on ITV4 and ITV Hub with a nightly highlights programme at 8pm. Again, please feel free to send in your photos and videos from the side of the road to @ScottishCycling on Twitter and Instagram.

Edinburgh and Scottish Borders to host opening stage 4 mins read time
Dfp – header, 25 apr 2017.
Edinburgh will host the start of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain for the first time ever as Britain’s biggest professional cycle race begins in the Scottish capital and the Scottish Borders on Sunday 3 September.
Stage One of the race will head from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile through East Lothian and into the Scottish Borders with the finish coming in the town of Kelso.
The 188-kilometre opening leg will also include a 79-kilometre loop in the Scottish Borders, giving fans at the finish in Kelso town centre the opportunity to see the world’s top riders in action twice.
Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s Director of Events, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming the Tour of Britain back to Scotland this summer. The open stage will take in some truly wonderful and iconic scenery as it travels from Edinburgh, through East Lothian and onto the Scottish Borders, providing an amazing spectacle for spectators and riders alike.
“Scotland is the perfect stage for cycling events and the Tour of Britain is fantastic race that brings strong economic and social benefits to the country. EventScotland is proud to be long-term partner of the event.”
Craig Burn, Chief Executive of Scottish Cycling said: “Scottish Cycling love it when major events come and take advantage of Scotland’s fantastic roads and facilities. To have Stage One of the Tour of Britain for the second year in a row is even better. Across the past four years Scottish Cycling has grown massively, with membership exceeding 11,000. We know that major events have been key in helping this number to grow therefore securing and staging elite racing is fundamental to achieving our inspiration to participation strategy. They are also a great way of bringing communities together and we look forward to hearing the Scottish cheer on the day!”
Councillor Richard Lewis, Edinburgh’s festivals and events champion, said: “This September will see the return of the UK’s most prestigious cycling race to the Scottish capital as the Tour of Britain kicks off north of the border. Thousands of people turned out to see the 2015 leg in Edinburgh and this year’s event will be second chance to catch the spectacular sight.
“Edinburgh’s winding and cobbled streets offer a challenging and dramatic start to the Tour of Britain in Scotland. I’m sure the competitors will enjoy the thrill of hurtling through the Old Town.”
Tracey Logan, Chief Executive of Scottish Borders Council, said: “We are delighted to be hosting our second Tour of Britain stage finish and are especially pleased to have the addition of the loop, which will showcase why this is Scotland’s leading cycling destination. This will also hopefully encourage thousands of spectators to make their way to Kelso to witness some of the world’s top cyclists race through the town twice.”
Douglas Proudfoot, Head of Service (Development) at East Lothian Council, said: “It was an exciting first for East Lothian when the Tour of Britain passed through in 2015 so we’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming the race once again this year.
“The route through our picturesque towns, villages, coast and countryside was lined with eager spectators so I’m sure there will be even more support for the riders this year. It also highlights what a fabulous place East Lothian is for cyclists of all abilities.”
It will be the sixth time that the opening stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain has taken place in Scotland since the race was revived in 2004. The race has only once before visited Edinburgh, in 2015, while the Scottish Borders have hosted the event on four occasions, most recently in 2015 when Team Sky’s Elia Viviani won a stage finishing at Floors Castle outside Kelso.
Mick Bennett, OVO Energy Tour of Britain Race Director, said: “We are delighted to be able to start this year’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain from the very heart of Edinburgh for the first time, and a location that is famous the world over. The backdrop from the Royal Mile of St Giles Cathedral and the Castle will provide a fitting send off for the world’s top riders.
“That we have been able to work with our partners in the Scottish Borders to create a finishing loop will not only reward spectators at the finish in Kelso, but enable the race to showcase more of the area, including the Eildon Hills towards the end of the stage.”
OVO Energy, the UK’s top rated independent energy supplier was recently announced as the title sponsor of the Tour of Britain.
The OVO Energy Tour of Britain is British Cycling’s premier road cycling event, giving cycling fans the opportunity to see the world’s best teams and riders competing on their door step, taking place between Sunday 3 and Sunday 10 September 2017.

Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days)
Was great both Christian and our bus driver were amazing .had a great time with some great people . Thanks very much
Essential Britain
The boat tour in Plymouth was not worth the time and neither was the boat trip to Skye. Too little time on The Isle of Skye and at Culloden. I would rather have driven to Skye and spent more time touring there. Accommodations were overall excellent. Good locations and clean. Coach was clean and the driver was excellent however there were some issues with WiFi ports working. Some did and some worked only occasionally. The tour director was average. She was friendly and kind. She wasn’t great. Not as much fun as another tour director I’ve had. One issue I had was that because I didn’t do the Edinburgh tours (I had already seen them previously), I didn’t know what time we were leaving the next morning. I left a voice message for Marge at the hotel and she never got back to me. It wasn’t a huge issue but I was surprised she didn’t get back to me. I got up early and just asked other travelers what time we were leaving when they came down for breakfast. I could have called her cell phone number but thought she would get the message at the hotel. Overall a good trip. Worth the money.

Today make the short journey east to the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh. Explore this magnificent city from the winding streets of the cobbled Old Town to the wide avenues of the opulent Georgian New Town. Stroll past the Gothic Burns Monument and through Princes Street Gardens before climbing the Royal Mile to the city's centrepiece at the magnificent Edinburgh Castle, home to the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny and St Margaret's Chapel.

Today explore Edinburgh in more depth; perhaps enjoy a spot shopping along Princes Street, visit Scotland’s national museums and galleries or discover Royal Edinburgh with visits to the Palace of Holyrood House, the Queens Edinburgh residence, or the Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith Docks, the official royal yacht for over forty years. By afternoon, take a short rail journey from Edinburgh to the historic town of Stirling, whose impressive castle was once the royal seat of Scotland. Alternatively, you could take an optional small group tour to St Andrews and the Fishing Villages of Fife.
Hop on the train and head south through the rolling hills of the Scottish Lowlands and rugged landscapes of Northumberland to York. This historic city is home to a wealth of historic and cultural sites to explore; wander the city from the cobbles of the famous Shambles (Britain’s first shopping street) to the medieval city walls, gates and towers. The highlight of course will be exploring the Gothic masterpiece at the iconic York Minster which dominates the city and marks York as the ecclesiastical capital of the North of England.
Overnight: York
Journey details: 2 hours 30 minutes (approx.)*
Today you’ll be whisked south to London on the high-speed line; this will be your base for your final two nights offering you time to explore the stunning English Capital. London is a thriving metropolis with a vibrant modern culture and rich history and heritage. Explore world renowned sights including Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square. In the east of the city you’ll find the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. By evening why not take a flight on the London Eye for spectacular views of the city skyline.

Today explore London in more depth; culture vultures will delight in some of the world’s most prestigious museums and galleries including the Tate Modern, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and the Imperial War Museum.
