Big Interview: Richard Downs, Iglu

As the online cruise and ski agency celebrates its 20th anniversary, its founder and chief executive reflects on the last two decades and looks ahead to Brexit and beyond. Harry Kemble reports

Few can begrudge Richard Downs his success. He set up Iglu at the height of the dotcom boom and celebrated 20 years in business in late 2018.

Downs saw an opportunity for an online travel agency for ski holidays in 1998 and grasped it with both hands.

The expansion into cruise followed the ski agency reaching a £1 million profit target in 2005, plus some persuasion from his friend Giles Hawke, now chief executive of Avalon Waterways.

Hawke talked Downs into taking his first cruise – a transatlantic sailing with Cunard. There was no turning back.

Today, Iglu trades in five countries and claims to be the largest continental retailer of cruise in Europe.

Downs is its softly spoken but determined chief executive.

His company’s online success means he fears for the future of bricks-and-mortar travel agencies across the country.

“I do not have a crystal ball,” he says. “But I think [high street travel agencies] will have to work harder and harder to attract footfall.

“I have held a similar view for the last 20 years. Consumers are moving online. If you are a high street agency, you need to have omnichannel capabilities; and if you are an OTA, crack on.”

Yet he admits shop agencies in remote areas of the country may have “sticky” or loyal client bases that can sustain their businesses.

“If they can find a way to leverage consumer business, then great,” he says. “If they continue to give great service then they will continue to get footfall into the store.

“If they don’t, consumers will go online. It is down to everybody to find out what they are good at. None of us take our customers for granted.”

Iglu investment

Last month, Wimbledon-based Iglu appointed David Gooch as commercial director, a role previously held by Dave Mills, who stepped into the newly-created role of global supply director in September.

The recruitment of Gooch, a former Thomas Cook e-commerce director, follows a long list of appointments made with a view to maintaining Iglu’s growth overseas.

Simone Clark’s move from managing director to senior vice-president for global supply in 2017 and Mills’ elevation are two of the most notable. When we started, we were in one country and now we supply five,” Downs explains.

“Dave [Mills] and Simone are building these new relationships, and that was taking them out of the office. Dave loves that stuff and he is brilliant at it, so we needed to fill that void.”

Downs is speaking just a few weeks before the wave period gets under way.

It is a time of the year that he knows well. After all, he chose to diversify from an online ski agency, heavily influenced by seasonality, to an year-round cruise business.

“[Gooch’s appointment] is an example of us investing in the team,” says Downs.

“It enables us to grow the business and will allow us to be as competitive in the marketplace as we can be.

“We represent the cruise lines’ product in the wave period. From a product and commercial perspective, it helps us put our best foot forward without giving any margin away.

“We are very bullish about 2019.”

Brexit impact

It is impossible not to ask Downs about Brexit as the nation limps towards its scheduled divorce from the EU on March 29.

Downs commutes to southwest London each week from Barcelona, where he lives with his family.

With Iglu now trading in four European countries outside of the UK – Ireland, France, Italy and Spain – Downs is better placed than many to opine on how the cruise industry will fare when Britain eventually leaves the EU.

He says it is “very difficult” to know what will happen. “It is a political conundrum, and nobody knows how to solve it.

“We are entering crazy, unchartered shenanigans, but we have got confidence in the industry.”

Downs’ upbeat assessment is due in no small part to the fact that Iglu’s cruise and ski sales are up year on year for 2019 and 2020.

He notes previous challenges that cruise has overcome in the past 20 years. Asked to recall the toughest, Downs does not hesitate in responding with the words “Costa Concordia”, describing the 2012 shipwreck as “one of the toughest challenges of the past 20 years”. He also cites the impact of the financial crash of 2008 on holiday bookings.

Cruise resilience

Downs says the fact that a cruise holiday is “more inclusive than most holiday products” will help the industry navigate its way through 2019.

“If following Brexit there was an exchange rate depreciation, then the cost of food and accommodation is all included in a cruise fare,” he explains.

“That might encourage people looking at both land-based holidays and cruise [to plump for the latter] because the value proposition of cruise is better.”

Furthermore, Downs says passengers who sail with P&O Cruises will be heartened that everything on board is priced in pounds.

“Cruising is a real hedge and helps cushion a natural [economic] blow,” he says. “The cruise industry is hugely resilient.”

Looking ahead, he adds: “It is going to be an exciting 2019. I go back to the cruise line partners that have had a 20-year track record of building ships.

“There is a very high probability that the capacity that is coming in 2019 and 2020 will meet the [passenger] growth.

“There are new lines being talked about such as Virgin Voyages and Ritz-Carlton. They are additives to the whole cruise industry.”

New to TTG?

Iglu 'focused on 2024 and beyond' despite cruise sale report.

Harry Kemble

Online cruise and ski travel agency Iglu.com insists the business is focused on “continued growth” and operating “in 2024 and beyond” despite a newspaper report saying its cruise business had been put up for sale.

eCard

The Sunday Times reported Lloyds Banking Group’s private equity arm Lloyds Development Capital (LDC) has hired investment bankers from Rothschild to oversee an auction of Iglu Cruise.

LDC took a minority shareholding in the Wimbledon-based OTA in 2015.

City sources told the newspaper the company’s owner is likely to want to sell the business for a valuation of “about 10 times forward earnings”, potentially around £100 million.

The business’s adjust earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) were £8.9m last year.

However, this EBITDA figure included the Iglu’s ski arm.

Founded in 1998, Iglu has grown from a small start-up business to one of the country’s leading digital travel agencies.

Iglu’s website says it offers over six million ski holidays and more than 20,000 cruises, adding: “No matter where you want to go or what you want to do, Iglu makes it easy and stress free with award-winning sales and customer support.”

In response to The Sunday Times report, the company told TTG : “We don’t comment on speculation in the press.

“The business is focused on continued growth in this very busy trading period.

On the back of a record-breaking Black Friday, preparation is well underway for a strong start to 2024 for the leading cruise and ski travel agency.”

It added: “We are looking forward to continuing to deliver exceptional service to our customers, and to supporting our partners, in 2024 and beyond.”

It’s been a while since we used Iglu to book a cruise holiday. Sales consultant Danielle, was extremely helpful, friendly and booking was all done over the phone at a competitive price.

Cruise enquiry

We made an enquiry through the website and Christopher rang us the following day and talked us through the cruise we had picked. He was very thorough and took time to ensure we understood everything and answer our questions.

Date of experience : April 14, 2024

Poor customer care handling operational changes

Cruise line made an operational change to our itinerary removing a port that if not on the original holiday would have meant we would not have booked. We therefore asked for our booking with Iglu to be cancelled. The ‘boiler plate’ response received by the customer service team was that this is classed as a ‘minor change’ not entitling us to any form of refund. Extremely disappointed with the lack of customer care overall.

David ODonnell was our agent and he was absolutely wonderful. So easy to talk too, I stood out needs, was helpful straight to the point and definitely a credit to Iglu!!! This is my 60th Borrhday present to myself and the experience is going to be 10 times better now thanks to David and Iglu!!!! Thank you

Iglu.com begins redundancy consultation process after “unprecedented circumstances”

Iglu Cruise

Iglu.com, the UK’s largest independent agent of ski holidays and cruises, has begun its redundancy consultation process.

The company is made up of the brand Igluski, Iglucruise and Planet Cruise, and has started its redundancy process today following the impact of coronavirus on the travel industry.

Iglu.com CEO, Richard Downs said: “Iglu.com will be entering into a consultation process with staff as part of a full strategic review to reshape the business, with the goal of emerging from the pandemic stronger and poised to grow again when demand returns.

“I have written to staff to inform them that roles across the business are at risk.

“The unprecedented circumstances of the last few months have been the most challenging period in the 22 years since Iglu.com launched, as it has been for so many businesses in the travel industry. I cannot thank our team enough for their dedication, support and resilience, in such difficult circumstances.

“The success enjoyed at Iglu.com has been driven by the people who work here, so it is with great regret that it has become necessary to restructure the business.

“We are proposing to reduce our operating costs by 40-50 per cent to be a more appropriate size for the current trading environment. We are doing this as a short term measure so that we can emerge stronger and return to growth when cruisers and skiers are able to travel again.

“We have investigated all avenues in order to retain jobs but as cruising drives the majority of our revenue, and with the pause of cruise operations ongoing, this has become necessary.

“We have organised external support for staff whose roles are made redundant after the consultation period, we will do all we can to help them showcase the great skills and experience we know they have to offer.”

The company’s cruise arm, Iglucruise, currently works with every major cruise line and offers cruise holidays around the globe.

The news from Iglu.com is just the latest in a string of cuts being made by the travel industry , following the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

A Carnival Cruise ship veered off course to rescue 27 Cuban migrants who were stranded on a rickety wooden boat in the waters between Florida and the island nation, according to a report.

Carnival Paradise had just set sail from Tampa when it spotted the desperate US-bound migrants about 20 miles off the coast of Cuba,

The ship set a course to intercept their decrepit craft with the high-seas rescue taking place around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Fox News reported .

Cruise ship rescues migrants.

The cruise ship was bound for Roatan, Honduras when it spotted the Cubans.

All 27 were taken aboard the ship, where they were fed and given medical checkups.

The Carnival crew notified the US Coast Guard and officials in Roatan.

In a statement, Carnival put the number of rescued migrants at 28 and said the ship was still scheduled to arrive in Honduras on Monday but did not provide additional details.

Earlier this month, the US Coast Guard intercepted a ramshackle home-made boat off the Key West shoreline — and shipped all 16 migrants on board back to Cuba, officials said.

Cuban migrants rescued by cruise ship.

The barely-sea-worthy craft — the bow of a small wooden boat with the rest made of foam — was spotted by an eagle-eyed good Samaritan and picked up by the Coast Guard cutter Charles David Jr. on April 7,  according to a press release .

The migrants were taken aboard the cutter and shipped back to Cuba, the Coast Guard said.

Yachtsmans Arms

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

The pub knew we were coming but we didn't have to order in advance. We got our drinks at the bar and the waitress came to the tables and took our food orders. The service was first class. There were a lot of choices and there... were lots of empty plates when we finished.I had cod and chips and a mushy pea puree with home made tarter sauce it was delicious.I believe the fish pie was first class too, the vegetables were cooked to perfection. One of our men had muscles with white wine and cream sauce, chips and french bread, I had never seen such a massive dish of muscles which he said were absolutely delicious. The steak and kidney puddings, fresh veg and mashed potatoes were excellent too as was the liver and bacon. No complaints as far as I know. I will certainly come back. More

Booked a table for Sunday lunch which turned out to be a brilliant decision. We were impressed with the Covid protection methods being deployed I.E., distancing, sanitizers and face coverings. Even though the pub was busy we did not feel crowded at all. The food... was excellent with the Prawn & Crayfish tail cocktail a highlight. Sunday Roast was really good value and a good plate full. We had Peroni beer on tap and a glass of wine with the meal, all well presented and good quality. The most striking aspect of our visit was how hard all of the staff were working to make it a memorable visit for all customers. Nothing was too much trouble, and even though we arrived early we were made to feel welcome and told that we might have to wait a little bit for our order, which was no problem. Superb effort. More

Came across this pub whilst on a day visit to Brightlingsea. We decided on an early lunch and sat outside but just to warn people it was a Wednesday and a lot of tables seemed to have been pre-booked and the place really started to... get busier at around 1pm. It seems very popular so if you can I would book beforehand. The waitress immediately took our drinks orders and brought the menus. She also asked if our dog wanted any water and brought him a bowlful. There is a dog friendly area inside the pub too! There was a good choice of reasonably priced meals on the main menu and specials menu. I ordered the cheese and ham ploughmans from the main menu which was delicious. The ham was good quality and thickly cut which makes a change to the ‘plastic’ ham served in a lot of other places. The rest of the party ordered off the specials menu. My partner cannot stop talking about how nice the pork belly was and my mother had the prawns in garlic which she really enjoyed. I dipped some of my bread in the sauce - gorgeous! The waitresses were attentive and friendly; you didn’t have to wait long to catch their eye for more drinks, etc. The tables were thoroughly cleaned between guests and the staff still wore visors. I just wish this pub was nearer to where I lived. Highly recommended and we will most definitely return! More

The food wasn’t very nice the fat which everything was cooked in could do with changing. The tables were sticky. When we told the staff about the food they wasn’t very accommodating or apologetic just took one portion of chips off the bill!!!! I wouldn’t... recommend this place. What happened to the customer is always right??? More

Food quality fantastic, wait time was a little disappointing, however the food made up for it, we did not book, just turned up at around 12:30, sat in garden as no seating inside, was a nice day so all good, we waiting over estimated time... given of 30 mins, we ordered our food and waited 50 mins. Roast dinner was lovely, chicken was ordered, we realised that the stuffing was missing on both plates and mentioned this to the waitress, she said we should of ordered this when ordering the original meal, and walked away, I looked at my partner and said that’s not right is it? So I called a different server over to which she was polite and went straight into kitchen and brought out what we were going to pay for, apart from that hiccup food was lovely, cauliflower cheese was the best, would of given 5 stars if the first waitress was more attentive. Will go back More

Ann and I both had the fish pie from the ‘ today’s specials’ menu. Fantastic portion. Piping hot but most importantly full of fish. Clearly a home made dish. Desserts of Apple crumble and Sticky toffee pudding were also home made , delicious, large portions... and served with a jug of custard each. This is the place for great pub food, home cooked dishes and desserts at under a £5. Fantastic quality and great value for money. A must visit when in Brightlingsea. Well done to the chef and all the staff. More

We chanced upon this pub when visiting Brightlingsea for the first time. We were able to sit at an outside table and enjoy the sun and a partial view of the harbour. Covid precautions were being observed including hand sanitizer and taking contact details. Our... drinks order was quickly taken and delivered to the table. Payment was contactless. We had a table booked elsewhere otherwise we would probably have stayed for food since the menu included a fresh fish dish that sounded delicious. If we return to the town I think we will try to eat here. More

This pub was really well set up for COVID, it was easy to get a table on the same day. The staff were so attentive throughout and really seemed to enjoy their work! The food was really tasty, nachos to start (could only have been... better with an option for pulled pork!) Wouldn't bother with the ribs again...needed a bit longer on the grill. However the Cajun chicken and steak were well cooked perfectly seasoned and served to perfection! Not enrolled in the Eat Out to Help out scheme but overall a lovely meal. More

This was our first choice for a lunch for the 2 of us or for a bigger celebration with family or friends but no more. We visited early summer to be "welcomed" by a member of staff who was bossy and inattentive. Our request to... eat in the bar area as we always have (as we find the dining area claustrophobic ) was unreservedly refused. We were told those tables were for people arriving with dogs! We decided to avoid visiting during the busy summer period and returned last month after the school holidays were finished. We sat at our previously favourite table in the bar area. Admittedly it is a big table but we had never had a problem before and had shared in busy times. The bar person told us that despite there being no sign requesting this it was for large groups only she was unhappy with us sitting thete. Furthermore if we remained sitting there and a group arrived we would be asked to move! It was midday on a Wednesday and the pub was not busy and we intended to be gone within the hour. However, we did move. During our visit we realised that one part of the bar was unavailable to even wait to order food or drink and the same bar person was not shy to tell people to move. Also there were none of the regulars who had their spot at the bar where they read their paper or put the world to rights. It did not feel like a local pub anymore. Our experience over these 2 visits have led us to believe that the Yachtsman is no longer a friendly, welcoming pub which serves very good food. However, it does not feel like a restaurant either. Unfortunately we will not be returning in the foreseeable future. More

This was a great find and we were glad we booked early both rimes we visited during our 4 day break with grandchildren. First time I had the seafood platter & second the lobster & seafood spaghetti thermidor. Excellent and a good choice of draught... ales. The grandsons were well catered for with the junior menu including sweet. One had sausage, the other chicken gougons on both visits. My wife had the liver & bacon first time, fish & chips second. The staff were friendly and efficient in visors in these post restrictions weeks. The food arrived promptly and the restaurant was busy with potential customers having to be turned away. Parking was on the nearby municipal car park. The pub had character with its maritime theme and quirky navigation aids dotted around. More

Lovely pub right near the Seafront and Old Shipyard. I returned to Brightlingsea after having lived there many years ago. Was pleased to see a lot of things had not changed too much. This pub has had a makeover and a decent outside eating area... makes it very pleasurable eating al fresco. The staff were friendly very attentive and the service was very fast. The food was excellent and my crab was heaven. Served with chips as well, very happy. My partner had the haddock and chips and mushy peas which was also amazing. Great food, great pub and great atmosphere amongst the locals. Worth the trip from Dartford and will hopefully return in the not too distant future. Yummy! More

During a short break based in Brightlingsea, we visited the Yachtsman twice (a lunch and an evening meal). On both occasions the food was delicious, staff were helpful and friendly, and there was a nice atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Entertained here by an elderly relative who took us to this hostelry on the advice of friends. Good friends, good advice ! Great atmosphere ( no frills ), lovely staff and super food at realistic prices. Hearty portions for sure. The best (fresh) veg. I've... had in a long time. Having had the cheese board to follow my fish pie ( excellent ) my one regret is that I forgot to ask whence they sourced the goats' cheese - surely a prize-winner. More

We were staying in the town and this was the closest pub to our holiday home, I'm so glad. The atmospher is very warm and freindly. We visited 4 times at different times of day, Sunday lunch, midweek lunch and evening meal and Just for... a drink on Saturday afternoon. The food was fantastic, reasonably priced and very good quality. We had a drink with the owner and chef on our last evening they are very passionate about their profession and it shows. The locals made us welcome the front of house staff were wonderful, helpful and freindly. We did not try anywhere else because this place suited us for where we were staying and why try and beat it if somewhere has everything you want. You all made our holiday. Thank you. Hope to see you all again sometime. (hope mum and baby are doing well) Jo and Steve More

Ordered bread board for starters up came sliced bread normally used for sandwiches and a stale piece of French bread. The smallest bowl of oil and vinegar but the worst was a bowl of garlic butter to spread on the cold dry bread. Then up... came what was suppose to be moules they were over cooked and most o them broken and empty shells with the smallest mussels in the dish. I complained and got the price of fish taken of the bill. Top prices disgusting food More

Whilst spending a few nights in Brightlingsea we spent a lovely evening in this pub. Plenty of choice on the menu and the food was good - traditional pub grub. A great atmosphere and we are so glad we booked a table because it was full!

Good location and popular with locals and visitors alike, but after stopping by for an early evening drink further investigation of the menu was abandoned after this Greene King estabishment served me a pint of ice cold Abbot ale. A red flag, I'm afraid.
