"Cumulatively, from January to November, the number of foreign tourists reached 4.6 million people, an increase of 228.30 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. This shows that foreign tourist visits grew quite high, with a 228.30-percent increase," Head of BPS Margo Yuwono said on Monday, Jan. 2.

He said that in Nov. 2022, some 544.8 thousand foreign tourist visits were recorded through the main entry points, while 112.4 thousand foreign tourists entered through the border gate.

The number of foreign tourist visits through the main entry points decreased by 3.6 percent compared to Oct. 2022. However, the number of visits in Nov. 2022 increased by 336.50 percent compared to Nov. 2021 or on a year-on-year basis.

"Although there was a decrease in November as compared to last month, throughout 2022, starting from April showed that the number of foreign tourists was much better compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of foreign tourists has improved compared to during the pandemic," Margo said.

2017 to 2021 Indonesia Sustainable Tourism Market Outlook Compared to 2022 to 2032 Forecast

Indonesia has diverse and rich landscapes and ecosystems that position the country as an attractive destination for tourists. Traditionally, Indonesia has earned most of its foreign currency by exporting primary products. Indonesia’s competitiveness as a tourist destination improved from 70th in 2013 to 42nd in 2017, according to the World Economic Forum's Travel and tourism competitiveness index (WEF, 2017).

In the last decade, low traveling costs in the country are encouraging travelers to visit and experience the unique culture and society, from language to food and the diverse way of life of Indonesian citizens.

In Indonesia, the government is taking initiatives for community empowerment, and some programs have a direct impact on tourism development. Village Tourism is a form that integrates attraction, accommodation, and other supporting services into the ambiance of the village’s life, while consistently keeping the ethics and traditions of the village intact.

Why is Indonesia Considered an Attractive Destination for Sustainable Tourism?

Organic Farming to Place Indonesia as a Sustainable Travel Destination

Organic farming, tree planting, rainwater recycling, solid waste segregation, composting, coastal clean-ups, farm-to-table eating, using local building materials, and employing solar energy are just a few sustainable activities that eco-friendly hotels engage in across Indonesia. Being in nature has several health advantages, including lowering stress and boosting the immune system, and more. In Indonesia, visiting exciting and natural sites might help one feel this sense of well-being.

Transportation is acknowledged as one of the most significant factors contributing to the development of tourism. Transport is also viewed as part of leisure, and companies in Indonesia are trying to blend transportation services with natural attractions to gain a competitive edge.

What are the Challenges Faced by the Sustainable Tourism Market in Indonesia?

Factors such as climate change and unexpected weather conditions are hindering growth in the sector in Indonesia. Tropical hurricanes, floods, and rising sea-water levels pose a challenge in the country by severely deteriorating tourism infrastructure, resources, and buildings.

Also, rebuilding and maintaining infrastructure could be a time-consuming process, depending on the severity of the natural calamity. These factors may impact the market's growth, which is another challenge for the tourism and hospitality sector in Indonesia during the forecast period.

Country Insight

How are government initiatives and strategies propelling sales in the sustainable tourism industry in indonesia.

Government-led Sustainability Projected in Indonesia Will Fuel Growth in the Tourism Sector

The Government of Indonesia aims for tourism development to achieve a range of economic, social, and environmental benefits, specifically to reduce unemployment, eradicate poverty, and protect the environment.

In 2015, the government made visa policy changes to attract more foreign tourists. Now citizens of 169 countries do not require a visa to enter and stay in Indonesia (for a maximum period of 30 days). The free visa policy is expected to bring significant foreign exchange earnings per year, as the loss of the visa receipts (USD 35 per person) is more than compensated by the spending of additional tourists in the country (around USD 1000 per visit). In 2016 the government also legislated to allow international cruise liners to embark and disembark passengers at five seaports, which should facilitate arrivals by sea.

Destination development will be supported by drawing on the power of digital technologies to differentiate new and existing locations with creative products and packaging suitable for modern travelers. For example, (1) the ‘10 new Bali’ initiative is intended to develop and realize 10 priority destinations across the country.

The development of priority destinations is carried out through the design process of an Integration Tourism Master Plan (ITMP), investment, construction, and capacity building through promotion and marketing, and structuring of destinations (accessibility, amenities, attractions).

To become a sustainable tourism destination, all strategies highlight some important points, such as the importance of technology for promotion activities and development of innovative tourism attractions, conservation-oriented, better infrastructure, and accommodation. In addition to this, education and training for all stakeholders including the tourism staff, the local community, and the local community for increasing environmental and economic awareness will augment the growth in the market.

Tourism's contribution to Indonesia's GDP can grow higher

This article has been translated by PwC Indonesia as part of our Indonesia Infrastructure News Service. PwC Indonesia has not checked the accuracy of, and accepts no responsibility for the content.

Investor Daily - Kontribusi pariwisata terhadap PDB Indonesia berpeluang tumbuh lebih tinggi

19 May 2022

Jakarta – The tourism sector’s contribution to Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) is still low at only 5%. The contribution is lower than other G20 countries such as Spain (14%), Italy (13%), Turkey (11%), as well as an ASEAN country Thailand (12%). To increase the contribution, more promotions, access repairs, and affordability are required.

Tiket.com CEO George Hendrata explained that digital economy in the ASEAN area reached around US$100 billion based on the data from Google and Temasek. From the amount, around 30% to 40% is contributed by travel. From the 30-40%, around 30% is from Indonesia. This shows that Indonesia is a large country, and it is expected to receive 16 million tourists this year.

“Our tourism’s GDP contribution is at 5%. So, there is a chance to match Malaysia and Singapore [with tourism] contributing around 10-12%. Moreover, we can also be like Thailand, Spain, and Italy,” George said during the Fortune Indonesia Summit (FIS) 2022 event held by IDN Media in Jakarta on Wednesday (18/5/2022).

According to George, there are at least three crucial keys to increase tourism’s contribution to the GDP. The first is attraction, as Indonesia has 17 thousand islands that can promote new locations. He explained that his company held workshops for local operators to show what can be exposed so that people know what can be seen or which location is suitable for photography.

“We have a responsibility to share how beautiful our tourism is with Labuan Bajo and Raja Ampat. This must be implemented continuously so that the places will keep on being visited by international or domestic tourists in the future,” George said.

The second is accessibility. He explained that Tiket.com was always observing the flight traffic data. So, they can provide an input on where maybe a new airport is required or where an airport needs to be renovated.

The third is affordability. Tiket.com will try to secure as many suppliers as possible so that their prices are affordable for travellers. “We want to [increase our contribution to the GDP] faster. We carry out [efforts] with related ministries. We also have an inter-intern program with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy so that we can learn from each other,” he stated.

During the occasion, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno, in his video, explained that the creative economy was slowly but surely becoming the backbone of the national economy after the Covid-19 pandemic. This is because the sector is the most enduring since the Covid-19 pandemic occurred at the start of 2020.

“The potential is increasing because this is the sector that has been proven to endure every dynamic, including the global Covid-19 pandemic,” he stated.

Sandi revealed that, based on the forecast data from the strategic study deputy of the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, the creative economy contributed Rp1,273 trillion to Indonesia’s GDP throughout 2021. “Our advantage and potential in the creative economy sector makes us optimistic about the industry becoming a new economic driver in Indonesia in the future and collaborating with other sectors,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi explained that the economy and the global trade was still uncertain due to a multidimensional crisis. IMF, in April 2022, corrected the global economic growth to 3.6% or by 0.8% compared to the forecast in January.

The global food and energy crisis is one of the reasons why the economic growth is slowing down. Inflation in several countries is growing uncontrollably. “However, we must be grateful as, in the first quarter of 2022, Indonesia’s economy grew 5.01% compared to last year,” he said.

The Trade Minister explained that Indonesia’s inflation from January to April 2020 was quite low at 2.1%. Indonesia’s trade balance performance continues its surplus trend for 24 months in a row. The surplus from January to April 2020 reached US$16.89 billion, sustained by the surplus from oil and gas export that reached US$24.6 billion. Lutfi explained that, amid the various challenges and complexities, Indonesia’s trade currently needed several stakeholder platforms that can synergise Indonesia’s potential in the future.
