PGA Tour: Jonathan Byrd turns back clock on Thursday

Jonathan Byrd has five career wins on the PGA Tour, but none since 2011. On Thursday, he had a solid round to give himself a chance this week.

Jonathan Byrd is a player who has had some success on the PGA Tour during his career. But there have not been many rounds like the one he had on Friday at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.

Byrd is trying to follow in the footsteps of Stewart Cink, also north of 40 years old, who won recently on tour at the Safeway Open. The 42-year-old Byrd would love to join the 40+-year-old winners club.

Thursday’s round started in fine fashion for the South Carolina native, as he made a birdie on the par-4 first hole. Byrd would then par the next four holes, remaining at 1-under par.

A birdie on the par-4 sixth hole would follow, getting Byrd to 2-under. He gathered momentum as he birdied the par-3 seventh hole to get to three under. A pair of pars would close out his front nine, where he shot a 3-under par 33.

On the back nine, Byrd continued his steady play. He parred the 10th and 11th holes. He would birdie the par-5 12th hole to get to 5-under par.

He would par the next five holes before a bogey at the 18th left him with a 4-under par round of 68. He was three shots behind the leaders at the completion of his round.

This is a player who came onto the tour and had great success early in his career. Byrd played his first full season on tour in 2002, when he earned his first win, at the Buick Challenge.

He would win four more times on tour. Byrd’s second win came at the 2004 B.C. Open. Then he won at the 2007 John Deere Classic. In 2010, Byrd won at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. And his last win on tour came at the 2011 Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

Much like Cink, Byrd is trying to turn back the clock this week. While it remains to be seen if he will be able to win like Cink did, Byrd is off to a very good start after a solid round of golf in Thursday’s first round.

Jonathan Byrd lives in limboville on the PGA Tour. The 41-year-old former All-American at Clemson no longer has full status, having finished No. 159 on last season’s FedEx Cup points list. But as a five-time tour winner he can still get into several events as a past champion. In the meantime, he plays in Web.com Tour events hoping to stay sharp and ultimately find a way to get back on the PGA Tour full time.

Play in the Web.com Tour’s Panama Championship was what Byrd expected to be doing this week. Until, that is, he realized when he got to the Jacksonville Airport to take his flight down to Central America that he’d broken the No. 1 rule of international travel: He’d forgotten his passport.

Upset with himself, he turned around and started driving back to his home in St. Simons Island, Ga., unsure what to do next. While on the road, though, Byrd learned that his status on the alternate list for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am had greatly improved, and that he was now the first alternate. A couple of hours later, he had actually gotten into the PGA Tour event.

“I’d be in Panama instead of Pebble this week if I didn’t forget my passport,” Byrd wrote on Twitter. “God always has a bigger plan!”

Byrd hopes his absentmindedness can become a true blessing in disguise as he tries try to move back toward full PGA Tour status. He has already played in four PGA Tour events in 2018-’19, making the cut in all four but finishing no better than T-23 in any (he’s played just one in 2019, a T-57 at the Desert Classic). Currently he stands at No. 146 on the FedEx Cup points list. His track record at Pebble includes a T-3 finish back in 2006, and made cuts in his last two starts (2016 and 2018).

«First acquaintance with Moscow» – a 2.5-hour city tour in the center of Moscow

This Moscow city tour starts on the Theater Square, past Lubyanka Square and the KGB-building, then through Kitay Gorod district and Varvarka Street, past the world-famous St. Basil’s Cathedral. Then it goes across Zarjadje Park, over Red Square at the Lenin Mausoleum, the GUM-department store and towards the Historical Museum. We walk through the Alexander Garden.

A 3.5-hour car/bus tour of Moscow.

This is the best tour of Moscow city as all the important sights are visited. I am your Moscow city guide who will walk you through the city explaining the charming history of the city. This tour begins with picking you up from the hotel. 3 breaks are offered for photographing.

First, we will visit the most famous riverside streets and bridges in the center of the city with the most beautiful views of the Kremlin and the Moskva River (e.g. the Kremlin embankment and the Great Stone Bridge).

The first photo break is made at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. We then pass by the district with numerous museums, Prechistinka Street and the district with numerous medical areas.

We again stop at the Novodevichy Convent, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the other bank of the Moskva River to click pictures.

Then we visit “Sparrow Hills” where you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city of Moscow from the observation deck. Then there are the skyscrapers of Moscow-City, the Kutuzov avenue, the New Arbat, Tverskaya Street, the world-famous Bolshoi Theater, the KGB building and Varvarka Street. Here there are ample spots to click pictures.

We then drive past the Kremlin again and finally reach Red Square. We take a short tour of Red Square and say goodbye in the Alexander Garden.

Metro tour – daily

Palaces for ordinary people – that was what Stalin promised to the people when the construction of the Moscow Metro began between the World Wars. The communist dictator hadn’t promised too much. No other underground system in the world can boast such spectacular architecture – chandeliers, decorations, stucco, paintings on the walls – each station is individually designed. No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

A military tour – riding on tanks in Stupino (Moscow region)

Russian Military is one of the largest military forces in the world formed in 1992. With my Military Tour experience what it likes to be in the Russian military, shooting guns, ride the Tank T-34 and various models of German tanks from the Second World War, as well as armored personnel carriers and vehicles. You will also shoot from the AK-47 and another combat weapon.

Redemption Info

You can board the bus at any stop and voucher can be exchanged directly with the driver. Printed vouchers required for this tour and are accepted at all stops. You will receive a ticket in exchange for your voucher, which you must keep until the expiry date/ tour. Please check your ticket to know when it expires. After exchanging your voucher for a ticket, your voucher will no longer be valid. In loss of voucher/ticket, company is not liable for any refund. Book Now!
