Best “Big 5 Safaris” With Kids Near Cape Town

kid friendly safari cape town

When visiting South Africa, a Safari trip to see the Big 5 is almost compulsory! Get close to those beautiful wild animals and experience an unforgettable encounter with elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos and many more African wildlife. However, flying to the famous Kruger National Park near Johannesburg in the north-east is not always feasible and often requires a bit more budget to reside in one of the game lodges situated in Kruger Park itself. So a safari near Cape Town is not only convenient, but also a relatively affordable alternative.

The good news is that there are quite a few Safari options in the rest of the country. You can find game lodges and nature parks only a few hours away from the most popular destination – Cape Town. Although there are no safaris in Cape Town directly, you don’t have to drive far to arrive at one of the Big 5 safari game reserves located near the Mother City.

But we’re here to help and list the best family-friendly safaris near Cape Town. Almost all of them are home to the Big 5 and completely malaria-free! So you can enjoy your game drive without any worries which is especially beneficial to families with younger children.

The Best Family-Friendly Safaris In South Africa 2024

One of our passions in life is letting our kids experience animals in their natural habitat. We love South Africa as a family holiday destination and we love to take the kids on family-friendly safaris in South Africa.

We have been to South Africa many times over the years and can say that it is the best country for taking the kids on safari.

We also go every year and are always trying different safari lodges in South Africa for families.

We’ve pulled together our recommendations for the best places to go on safari in South Africa with kids. These are places we have visited with our kids and have loved.

They are all very different and range in price so there should be something to suit everyone.

Before we list our recommendations for South African safaris that are kid friendly, we just wanted to touch briefly on why it is so great to go on safari with kids.

We’ll also explain why South Africa is the best choice for a family safari because we do get a lot of questions on this subject!

Want to explore more safari destinations? We have a great post on the best destinations in Africa to go on safari .

This post contains affiliate links. If you click on one and book something, we may earn a small commission but this is at no extra cost to you and helps towards the running of this website.

Looking for an amazing African safari holiday with everything taken care of for you, we highly recommend contacting Go2Africa who are at the top of their game and won the World Travel Award for Africa’s Leading Luxury Tour Operator in 2022 .

The Best Family-Friendly Safaris In South Africa 2024 1

Why go on safari with kids?

If you’ve never been on safari with kids but love the idea of it, we highly recommend it for a number of reasons.

  • It’s so much better for kids to see animals in their natural environment than visiting a zoo. Obviously going on safari is not always an option because of the cost (although we have written a post on how to plan a budget African safari ). If you can’t go on an African safari right now, check that the zoo or animal park you are visiting is ethical. You can also try some virtual safaris with Wild Earth .
  • It’s such an amazing educational experience for them. Many of the family-friendly lodges provide child-friendly safari activities and educate the kids on animal conservation and protection. We feel it’s so important to educate the next generation on these matters.

Why go to South Africa on safari with kids?

Having been on safari in quite a few countries across eastern and southern Africa, we feel you can’t beat visiting South Africa with kids . It’s a great place to go on safari with your family for a number of reasons.

  • South Africa has it all. From the Big Five animals – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and Cape buffalo – to antelope, zebra, hippo, giraffe, hyena and a wide variety of bird and marine animals.
  • There is an amazing choice of parks and game reserves where you can view these animals in their natural habitat.  Many of these parks are actually in the Western and Eastern Capes, close to the popular ‘Garden Route’ . These parks or game reserves are malaria free and so are easily accessible for families with young children.
  • Many of the parks are self-drive with good camping grounds so you can do a relatively cheap safari compared to some of the other African countries. There’s no doubt that an all-inclusive luxury game lodge with the Big 5 can be prohibitively expensive. There are, however, other ways to see the Big 5 without having to win the lottery.
  • South Africa has so much more than safaris to offer the family traveller. There are many family-friendly activities in South Africa that you can combine with a safari. You really should pay a visit to Cape Town as there are so many family-friendly things to do in Cape Town and lots of great family accommodation in Cape Town .

Check out our epic 2 week itinerary to South Africa for inspiration for booking your own trip!

Our top 5 family-friendly safaris in South Africa

An African safari is one of our favourite things to do in South Africa so we decided to recommend the best family-friendly safaris in South Africa.

These are family-friendly South African safaris that we have done ourselves and have got the big thumbs up from the kids.

We have put our top picks in ascending price order.

1. Addo Elephant National Park

Big 5 – YES.

Entrance fee: R376 (adult) and R188 (child).

See here for the most current entry fees for Addo .

Addo Elephant National Park is located about 60km from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape – one of the best areas for malaria free safaris for families in South Africa .

If you are going to self-drive, all you need to pay is the entrance fee which makes it a really economical safari experience.

Addo Elephant National Park entrance gate

Addo Elephant National Park entrance gate

Addo started out as an elephant park back in 1931 with just 11 elephants and was set up to protect the remaining Addo elephants from being completely wiped out by hunters and farmers.

If elephants are your thing (or your child’s thing) – you will not be disappointed with Addo because they are everywhere!

kids on safari in Addo Elephant Park in South Aarica watching elephants

Family of elephants heading to the watering hole at sunset at Addo

We were in the park a good 30 mins after closing time because we got stuck behind a family meandering up the hill to a watering spot.

We didn’t want to pass because they were clearly protecting their baby, so we hung back.

We were worried we would be locked in but the ranger found us and told us we could take our time. It was amazing watching them with nobody around as the sun was setting.

In 2003 they introduced six lions to the park. They now have around fourteen, although we didn’t see any on our drive.

Our chances of seeing them may have been improved on a guided safari, but we were happy doing our own thing on this occasion.

If you want to book a guided safari, make sure to do it well in advance through  SanParks  as they get booked up.

Addo Accommodation for families

There are various accommodation options in the park, ranging from campsites to pitch your tent, to luxury lodges, so there is something to suit every budget.

We stayed outside of the park where there are also plenty of accommodation options. These are all within a couple of kilometeres of the main gate.

Top recommendation : AfriCamps Addo – we have stayed in lots of AfriCamps accommodatio around South Africa. They offer affordable safari tent style accommodation.

Budget recommendation : Avoca River Cabins – lovely accommodation and so reasonable.

Luxury recommendation : River Bend Lodge – a private villa on a private concession in Addo Elephant National Park.

2. The Kruger National Park

Entrance fee : R460 (adult) and R230 (child).

See here for the most current Kruger entrance fees .

Visiting Johannesburg with kids and keen to take them on safari?  You wouldn’t want to miss an opportunity to visit the Kruger National Park .

It’s an enormous national park relatively close to Johannesburg that borders Mozambique to the east and Zimbabwe to the north.

You can self-drive and stay at relatively inexpensive campsites within the park which is why we have put this second.

There are also some eye-wateringly expensive luxury lodges. If you’re looking for a luxury safari experience in the Kruger, here is a list of the most family-friendly accommodations in the Kruger National Park and our guide to Timbavati Game Reserve family accommodation .

We stayed at an inexpensive campsites located within the park in our own tent, but there are also chalets equipped with bedding. You can check on the SanParks website for more info .

Some of the campsites have pools which were great for relaxing and cooling down between morning and afternoon safaris, especially when temperatures were reaching 40 degrees.

We stayed at the Malelane campsite and Lower Sabie (with pool).

Lower Sabie Campsite pool area

Lower Sabie Campsite pool area

We entered via the Malelane entrance. Within two minutes of passing through the gates had a very close encounter with a rhino.

We saw him to our left as we were driving and he was not slowing down so we sped up a little to get out of his way. The rest of the game viewing was just as spectacular.

The Kruger National Park currently advises that people take anti-malarials because of recent cases of malaria but you should check the situation before you go as it can change.

See here for a guide to visiting the Kruger .

3. Buffelsdrift Game Lodge

Check prices for Buffelsdrift on Booking.com .

Big 5 – NO.

For prices, it’s best to check with the lodge because they have various different packages available.

Buffelsdrift is just outside the town of Oudtshoorn. We stayed in a traditional (but quite luxurious) family safari tent .

It had 2 bedrooms separated by the bathroom (with claw foot bath, double sinks and outdoor shower) and a lovely veranda that looked out over the lake and the hippos.

The perfect spot from which to enjoy a sun-downer!

Family-friendly safaris in South Africa at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge

Arriving at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge

We went for the half-board option and chose a game drive and elephant experience. Buffelsdrift wa a great choice because it was conveniently on our route to Oudtshoorn to visit the Cango Caves and crocodiles.

It was a bit cheaper than some other private game reserves because it doesn’t have the Big 5 animals. They have a lot of wildlife wandering between the tents, such as Nyala and during breakfast and dinner by the lake, we would see hippos.

Nyala wandering between the tents

There was also the option of elephant, meerkat or lion experience. We opted for the elephant experience – and it certainly was an experience!

You can book your Buffelsdrift accommodation here on Booking.com with flexible cancellation.

Another relatively inexpensive safari option if you want the safari tent accommodation and guided game drive is  Chandelier , also near Oudtshoorn.

They don’t have the big 5, but they do have a huge area to explore on foot which the kids loved. There was a giraffe feeding experience where you can buy food and hand feed them at breakfast time.

We just did one night here on the way back down the Garden Route.

4. Kariega Game Reserve

Price – check with the lodge or speak to Go2Africa about Kariega packages .

Kariega is situated in the Eastern Cape, about 40km from Grahamstown (and about 150km from Port Elizabeth) and incorporates both the Bushman’s and Kariega rivers.

We love that Kariega is family-friendly because it is built on the land that was once owned by the boy’s great, great, great, great, great grandfather.

He was one of the original English settlers in 1820 and the remains of his house can be seen on the Kariega land.

Kariega sitting above the Kariega valley

Kariega sitting above the Kariega valley

One of the great things about Kariega is that they run a daily kids programme between 11am and 2pm, offering guided trails in the bush (within the boundaries of the Main Lodge).

On this walk the kids will be tasked with identifying animals and making animal related arts and crafts. It is fun and educational.

Children can accompany their parents on game drives, although children 5 and under is at the ranger’s and general manager’s discretion based on a safety assessment.

If they can’t accompany you, there is a babysitting service.

George ever on the look out for animals

George ever on the look out for animals

There’s a play area in the Main Lodge, which is also where dinner is taken. If the kids have finished their meal, they can go and play, leaving you to enjoy a meal in peace .

If you are staying with children under 10, you will only be able to stay in the Kariega Main Lodge (log chalets).

They’re super cosy and some have private pools with a great deck overlooking the Kariega valley for sun-downers! Kariega is extremely warm and welcoming and you will definitely enjoy your stay here.

You can book Kariega family accommodation here on Booking.com with flexible cancellation.

Read our full review of Kariega Main Lodge .

5. Shamwari

Price – check with the lodge.

Shamwari is located around 75km from Port Elizabeth and is easily doable if you are driving the Garden Route.

It’s one of the world’s leading safari and game reserves and works hard in the areas of conservation and environmental education.

Shamwari is also famed for having had Mrs Thatcher and Paris Hilton among its clientele!

Rhino encounter at Shamwari

Rhino encounter at Shamwari

There are two family-friendly lodges at Shamwari ( Shamwari Riverdene and Shamwari Long Lee Manor for kids 8+) and a large main pool with shallow end for children. Shamwari Sarili Lodge is also available for larger groups.

Getting up close with the lions in Shamwari

Getting up close with the lions in Shamwari

It’s getting into the very expensive bracket but it’s truly a 5 star experience and you will be very well looked after!

We haven’t stayed with kids but have visited prior to having the kids and loved the set up there.

Children under 4 aren’t permitted on game drives but there is a childminding service. There’s a great activity centre for kids where they can zip line, wall climb and access tree houses with interconnecting walkways.

Arts and crafts are also offered in the kid’s centre.

If you’re looking for luxury family-friendly safaris in South Africa (in a non-malarial area), this is the one for you.

We have also recently stayed at these fabulous lodges in the Kruger. They deserve to be on the list of the best family-friendly safaris in South Africa so will update our post with details on our stay shortly.

The Best Family Safaris in South Africa

Your post is really informative and I love your photos! Safaris look like such an awesome experience for all but especially for the kids!

Thanks for your comment Tammy. Yes, we think the kids get so much from the experience. It’s massively educational and fun at the same time!

Thanks for this post. Very helpful as we plan a safari with our 4.5 year old. Just wondering about the Buffelsdrift Game Lodge as you mention an elephant, meerkat or lion experience options. Are these animals pets or trained in some way? How do they make them come close to people for these experiences? Worried about the animal welfare if there is an elephant or lion experience as I wonder about the training methods they are using and what the lions fate is after they are grown up. Thanks.

Hi Laurie, thanks for your comment. We are also concerned about animal welfare and have boycotted turtle hatcheries in Sri Lanka and Elephant orphanages there because we have heard bad reports. With Buffelsdrift, we believe the animals are cared for. The Lions and Meerkats are essentially wild. When they say ‘experience’ they mean viewing, as with other game reserves. The lion cubs were born in captivity elsewhere and brought to Buffelsdrift a few years ago so they had more space and can therefore never be released into the wild. The elephants were orphaned and are tame. We truly got the impression that they were cared for and loved. I hope this helps you with your decision. Thanks, Jacs.

Sharing is caring!

If you are considering taking a family trip to Cape Town, South Africa you have made a fantastic choice! We have outlined our Cape Town itinerary with kids to hopefully help you with planning your trip. Cape Town is full of so many family-friendly activities and bursting with fun things to check out. So many great things to do in Cape Town as a family, your toughest part will be deciding which things to do first!

Find out the best itinerary for Cape Town with kids. Some family friendly things to do in Cape Town, South Africa including Table Mountain, V & A Waterfront, Boulders Beach, Cape of Good Hope, Cape Point, Robben Island, Stellenbosch, Lion’s Head and so much more for the best Cape Town itinerary for families. #capetown #southafrica #tablemountain #capepoint #capeofgoodhope

As part of our 3-week itinerary to South Africa , we spent time in Cape Town before heading off on a safari in Kruger National Park . There are easy direct flights from Cape Town to Kruger, so the best advice would be to book your safari first and then arrange your Cape Town visit around your safari availability.

Places to Stay in Cape Town

Before we get into all the fun things to do in Cape Town, a decision on where to stay will be at the forefront of booking your vacation here. One of the most common questions I get asked about is – Where do we stay in Cape Town with Kids?

My suggestion would be to stay somewhere close to the V & A Waterfront area. We stayed in this apartment in Cape Town which was within walking distance and this allowed us to explore the area a few times when we wanted. Green Point is a great area to stay with families in Cape Town.

We also stayed at the Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Cape Castle for the last night before our flight to Kruger National Park for our safari adventures. Check out some hotel options in the V & A Waterfront , and use the satellite map to see where things are located in the area. This is where many of the tourist attractions are so you’ll want to be close by these areas.

Cape Town Itinerary for Kids

Day 1: v & a waterfront.

Strolling along the V & A Waterfront ( Victoria & Alfred Waterfront ) will give you a great introduction into Cape Town. We walked around the waterfront which provided great views of the harbour, Table Mountain and great pedestrian walkways for a relaxing atmosphere.

Enjoy a meal at any of the restaurants for some tasty seafood and local wine. There is also some boutique shops, souvenir shops, local artist or a bigger shopping center located nearby too. A couple of playgrounds are scattered throughout the area and don’t forget to check out the famous swing bridge. There is also the Cape Wheel if you are wanting a smaller scale ferries wheel to go on for some fun.

V & A waterfront is definitely one of the best kid friendly places in Cape Town to visit.

There is always something unique and entertaining happening in the amphitheatre and Nobel Square in the V & A Waterfront so stroll along those spots. The kids loved to go and find Oscar the seal in front of The Table Bay hotel. So walk around and discover hidden gems in the waterfront and keep your eyes open for the seals that you can frequently find playing in and around the harbour.

Day 2: Table Mountain – Cable Car

Table Mountain is the flat-topped mountain… hence the name… that is almost visible from every angle of Cape Town. The views from up top are truly amazing and gives you an eagle eye perspective of Cape Town and the area. Breathtaking views which now I can understand why it is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

A single cable car will take you up to the top for a short ride and then comes the best part – the view of Cape Town! Spend a few hours walking around up top the mountain and inhaling the views. Our kids love trying to spot the dassies (a furry little animal) amongst the rocks and going on some short walks up top on the table.

Table Mountain Tips:

  • Don’t leave Table Mountain to your last day. High winds can cancel the cable car, so be sure to put this at the front of your visit so you aren’t disappointed if it is closed for a portion of the day.
  • Buy your tickets in advance for the day that you want. There is a shorter queue that you can take, and if there are high winds you can go you can get an extension on your ticket. I’m fairly certain they only sell a certain amount per day.
  • Check Table Mountain website for weather conditions and cable car timings for the day.
  • Be prepared with warm clothes, we found it to be much cooler temperatures than lower below.
  • Go early and beat the rush of the tour buses and for smaller queues.
  • Pack a lunch and water so you can enjoy a little picnic with the family along the hiking paths up top.
  • Bathrooms are located at the top, so take a bathroom break for you walk around up top.

Day 3: Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope & Boulders Beach Day Trip

Visiting Cape Peninsula is an absolute must when going to Cape Town! This was one of the most spectacular drives and amazing to see where both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. There is something powerful and energizing about this place… or maybe it was the wind ;)

Find out the best itinerary for Cape Town with kids. There are many options for family travel tours through Viator , Get Your Guide or other local tourist shops that are around Cape Town. But, we decide to go with the City Sightseeing bus tour. We took this tour last minute because of the high winds on Table Mountain so we had to fill up our day short notice, and we lucked out. With 15 minutes to spare we managed to get back down to the V & A Waterfront to hop on the day trip tour bus.

The tour took us to the famous Boulders Beach where you can see all the penguins swimming, playing and chilling on the beach. So cool to see – a highlight for sure for our family!

Then out to Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope, which is the most south-western point of the African continent! We had a few hours to explore which was the right amount of time to check things out and needless to say, a place that we will never forget visiting or those baboons who tried to steal Luca’s sandwich. The gorgeous drive back took us through Scarborough and scenic Ou Kaapse Weg mountain pass.

What we liked about taking the tour was that both us parents could enjoy the scenery and share in the excitement with the kids. We didn’t need to rent a car and felt that it was the right amount of time at each place. The downside is that there were so many places along the way we wish we could have pulled over to explore, but that would have made a much longer day trip!

Any way that you can get out to Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope and Boulders Beach will be well worth the time and money. It was one of our favourite family adventures in Cape Town.

Day 4: Promenade Walk or Bike

Feel like a local and enjoy the day walking along the Promenade. There are so many playgrounds and parks along the way for the kids to stop and play, while us adults sat and enjoyed the ocean view. Pack a lunch and have a picnic along the way or grab an ice cream on a hot day.

There are also bike rentals along the walkway that can make it quicker if you are short on time or prefer. Bikes can be ridden along the pathway and no worries about cars or traffic.

You can also enjoy watching all the paragliders come down from Lion’s Head which is located just behind this walkway. Or if you are daring enough to try they can pick you up and drive you up for the experience.

Where we were staying was very close to this walkway, so we ended up going here a few times both during the day and at sunset after supper.

Day 5: Wine Tour to Stellenbosch Day Trip

Ah, South African wine! Even if you are not a wine fan the area in the Stellenbosch is a beautiful landscape and worth the day trip to the vineyards. Mountains, vineyards, wine tasting, golf courses, animal sanctuaries and local farm-to-table food can fill up your day with a good balance for both kids and parents.

Find out the best itinerary for Cape Town with kids. We went to the following spots for the day:

  • Great cheese and wine pairing. Kids got to enjoy feeding the goats and sample some grape juice.
  • Located very close to the next vineyard this provided the day with some kid-friendly animal encounters to see birds of prey, reptiles and other small animals native to the area.
  • Sit down atmosphere for wine samples. Kids loved the wine and red grape juice samples plus they got some fun kids packages to entertain them while mom and dad finished their wine samples. Brilliant!
  • Jamie is a golf fan and when we had to choose a final spot, this one was on the way and seemed to be a good fit. Hit a few golf balls in between sampling some wines and tapas.

We hired a guide from our VRBO host and he drove us and arranged all our wine tastings. This allowed us parents to enjoy the wine tasting and scenery without having to worry about driving. It cost us approx $400 CDN for the private tour. There are other tours that can be offered with bigger groups, but we wanted to be able to have flexibility with the kids. Plus, we weren’t sure if the wine tours would be kid-friendly, but we were wrong. Although it was more of an adult fun day, the guide took us to wineries that were well suited and kid-friendly so we were happy with the decision to take the private tour.

Day 6: Rob b en Island

Visiting Cape Town wouldn’t be complete without trying to learn from history and the great leaders who have transformed this great country over the years. A visit to Robben Island is one way that provides a glimpse into that part of their history and visiting the Nelson Mandela Museum.

We took our kids, knowing they were a little young to truly understand the immensity of what Nelson Mandela and all the other political leaders had persevered through. But to our surprise, the visual context of seeing where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned provided us with a tangible thing to talk to our kids about. We boiled it up to our 5 & 7 year old as – they were put in jail for 35 years because they believed everyone should be treated the same and used their words to try to make change happen. And after he was released Nelson Mandela was the president of the country.

Now, I know there is much more to all the history behind it, but for our young kids they got it and even if they only got a small message as simple as that – it was a great learning day for all of us. For me, having been walked around the prison by a former inmate and political leader filled my heart and soul. It was a day full of high and low emotions, learning and exuberating sheer respect for so many people who truly stood up for what they believe it and never gave up.

Robben Island Tips:

  • Do you need to book Robben island in advance? Yes, I would advise booking your tour online ahead of time and at the beginning of your trip and Skip the Line. Weather and demand can alter the tour operations since you are taking a ferry out to the former prison island. We were very lucky that we were in Cape Town for almost 2 weeks and were able to squeeze this in. Do not just show up and think you will be able to take the tour that day, you need to pre-book in advance.
  • If you buy tickets at the museum you will need your passports to show for ID.
  • You will also need your passports or photo ID to pick up your tickets.
  • The seas can be rough so if you are prone to seasickness then take some medication precautions. We had a really rough sea day, where the tour was close to being cancelled.
  • Booked for the first morning (9 am) tour, just in case of weather you may be able to get onto later ferries that day.

Day 7: Two Oceans Aquarium

The Two Oceans Aquarium is a great spot to spend a few hours with the kids. So many cool animals for the kids to see and learn about. The aquarium is very kid-friendly with some areas for the kids to get hands-on and engaged. Penguins, turtles, fish and so many other animals for the kids to go check out. Our kids loved asking questions to all the knowledgeable staff who truly love their jobs.

Aside from the animals they also have some good learning exhibits for the kids to learn about water conservation, pollution and other factors that impact wildlife. These exhibits change over time which keeps it fresh for new material. Our kids also loved the children’s area which had crafts and games for them to have some fun.

The aquarium is located very close to the V & A waterfront, so you can combine these activities very easily in one day if you are short on time.

Two Oceans Aquarium Tips:

  • Try to line up when you visit with when they have feeding – penguins or shark feeding was our kids favourite. Get there a bit early to find a spot to sit.
  • Check their website in advance and see if there are any special events or exhibits going on so you can take advantage of those.
  • Great for a rainy day in Cape Town
  • Get your tickets in advance and Skip the Line here!

Day 8: Camps Bay Day Trip

A short drive from Cape Town can take you to more of a beach town called Camps Bay. We took an afternoon and went to stroll and chill out at the beach. Ice cream shops and restaurants line the beach and some beautiful scenery as you take the windy turns to get through the hills down to the beach.

We really enjoyed this beachside town, so if you are looking to split your time between the city of Cape Town and another spot, Camps Bay may provide a good option to stay here for a couple of days too. Next time we will definitely spend a few more days along this coast.

Camps Bay Tips:

  • Take an Uber to Camps Bay for a quick way to get there if you don’t have your own car.
  • Next time I would also consider staying in this area if we were wanting to spend more time at the beach.

Other Things To Do in Cape Town with Kids

  • Lion’s Head – Hike Lion’s Head and get an eagle’s eye view of the coastline and city
  • Paraglide – Adrenaline alert – If you are up for it, you can go paragliding off of Lion’s Head and end up down below at the Promenade. We enjoyed just watching from down below but might be on our bucket list next time.
  • Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens  – Spend the day wandering around and admiring the botanical gardens!
  • Cape Town Stadium Tour – Sports history and get the behind the scenes tour of the Cape Town stadium.
  • Attend a Rugby Game – If you are lucky! For any sports fan, this would be an incredible experience. Check out the websites in advance and try to see if a game line up. But, be warned the tickets are hard to come by… so if you are a true rugby fan line up your trip after you have acquired tickets.
  • Township Tour – If you are interested in visiting the townships to learn more about the areas, I would suggest you book with a tour. We were advised the best way to visit the township areas was to be welcomed by either a local and/or elder from the area. We did look to arrange a school visit with our kids, but the week that we were there school was out.

Safety in Cape Town

To be completely honest, we had safety at the top of our minds when we booked our trip to Cape Town. We weren’t exactly sure how safe it was going to be and had fallen into the hype of the western media fear tactics of Cape Town and South Africa. To sum it up – I would take my family there again (in a heartbeat) and would have no issues recommending others taking their kids there too.

In general, from our observation and experience, Cape Town is like any other big city in the world when it comes to safety. We use the same common sense principles that keep us safe back home in a big city as we did there.

We aren’t typically walking around at night (kids are asleep by 8 pm), we don’t walk around with expensive camera equipment or fancy clothes and jewelry. Another thing to note is that we don’t go into areas of the city that we have no purpose being there. We were advised by our VRBO host not to go into the townships unless we were being hosted or invited by someone from that community.

What you should be aware of in advance is that it is typical for homes to have locked gates and barb wire around many, if not most. Our apartment had a locked gate and barb wire with a doorman at the entrance and it was all fairly typical. In my interpretation, it doesn’t indicate whether the area is good or bad.

Cape Town Travel Tips

  • Give yourself and family a day of rest upon arrival. Depending on the time change or length of flight be sure to give yourself some time to adjust to the time if you can. That’s why I suggest walking around V & A Waterfront the first day, it isn’t too strenuous and gives you some fresh air, exercise and get your exposed to the area without being too much for the first day.
  • Don’t forget to have Travel Insurance when travelling internationally. We used Travel Nomads for our entire world trip including for South Africa.
  • Uber was the best form of transportation that we used for in and around the city for our family of 4. We did use a taxi initially from the airport but after getting data on our phones Uber was the easiest.
  • Phone cards – tourist data cards can be purchased from their mobile providers and at the airport.
  • If you are considering renting a car in Cape Town you can check out car rental rates here and the best advice would be to rent from the airport.
  • Otherwise, you can get an airport transfer in advance to take you to your hotel from the airport here .
  • We always have a travel guide for our trip and here are a few of our favourites:

Search for penguins and animals as you leave the city behind and head out for a day of exploration with your private guide. Visit the seals in the quaint fishing village of Kalk Bay. Stop for some treats at a local bakery, enjoy a hot chocolate, and listen to a few of the local shark stories or try your hand at fishing.

Heading back out away from town, discover a local beach that is home to penguins. Dip your feet in the sea water and try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking to get an up-close look at these fascinating little creatures.

From there, continue on to Cape Point to seek out the Cape 5: ostriches, baboons, mountain zebra, bontebok, and tortoises. Wander along hiking trails through indigenous fynbos, past hidden coves and rocky beaches. Learn about the shipwrecks on this coastline, keeping an eye out for lost treasure, then head up the funicular or take a gentle hike to the Cape Point Lighthouse, for an incredible panoramic view over the ocean. Take the scenic return drive back to the city, stopping along the way at a local farm village for homemade ice cream.

Table Mountain and City Tour

Top view of the Atlantic Ocean. National Park Table Mountain, South Africa, Cape Town

See all of Cape Town at your feet from the top of Table Mountain. Take a scenic cable car ride to the top, as the vistas of the city and surrounding ocean are slowly revealed. At the top, explore the mountain top and look for dassie (local rock rabbits), then visit a cafe for a well-earned hot chocolate and delicious local baked goods.

Returning to sea level, you have the option to hop on bikes and cycle along the Sea Point Promenade. Explore the coast, letting the kids lead the way with their own interactive maps. Stop at art installations en route, and hear the story of Nelson Mandela while gazing out toward Robben Island, where he spent so many years imprisoned. Staying safe and off road, head into Green Point Park for a fun look at the unique Cape flora and fauna before lunch.

After lunch, explore the city’s uplifting urban art projects, District Six and interactive sites like the Apartheid Benches, which bring to life the history which has shaped South Africa. This is terrific for teens and older children. Families with younger kids can head to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens for an afternoon of exploration within the estate. Follow a treasure map along tree-top canopy walkways and prehistoric cycad gardens. Jump over steppingstones, climb Van Riebeek’s historic hedge, and barrel down lawns in search of Claud the Clawless Otter.

End the day at the beach with a private picnic, and sip a sundowner with your feet in the sand while the kids play beach games with their energetic guide.

Madikwe’s wooded hills give way to savannah and Kalahari plains, roamed by all of the Big Five and countless other mammals. 5 Best Family-friendly Safaris in South Africa

5 Best Family-friendly Safaris in South Africa

Christopher is a British travel writer and has contributed to various Fodor's guidebooks and a range of travel magazines.

The words “family” and “safari” do not usually go hand in hand. It can be challenging to find family-friendly Safaris that are accessible and safe for the whole family, while also providing enough diversions for the kids. Not to worry, SafariBookings is the go-to online resource for planning a safari. We know, firsthand, the ideal safari destinations for families to experience the breathtaking beauty and wonder of African wildlife.

For starters, South Africa is certainly your best bet for the whole family. The country is almost entirely malaria-free and generally has good roads, infrastructure and transport links. South Africa also has as a number of parks that allow self-driving. The list below is a rundown of South Africa’s best family-friendly safaris.

South Africa Family Safaris

1. Kruger National Park

5 of the Best Family-Friendly Safaris in South Africa - Kruger

Kruger National Park is one of South Africa’s biggest parks and certainly its most well-known. And it is also one of its most accessible. It’s an easy 4-hour drive from Johannesburg or Pretoria. Or take a 55-minute flight from Johannesburg to Skukuza on the fringes of the park, with multiple flights operating daily.

Within the park itself, there are a number of tar roads and - like all of South Africa’s national parks - Kruger is open to self-drivers. The Big 5 are all here in abundance and remarkably easy to spot, considering the size of the park. Jock Safari Lodge, themed on the much-loved South African children’s book ‘Jock of the Bushveld’, is a particularly great accommodation option for those with young kids. As is Kapama River Lodge, where families go on their own exclusive game drives, and rangers facilitate child-friendly activities, like spoor casting.

Kruger Safari Tours

2. Pilanesberg National Park

5 of the Best Family-Friendly Safaris in South Africa - Pilanesberg

Pilanesberg National Park is the most accessible of the family-friendly safaris on the whole African continent. It's also an easy 2-hour drive from Johannesburg and an hour-and-a-half from Pretoria.

There’s a range of very affordable accommodations inside the park. This includes self-catering chalets that accommodates up to five people. And even the cheapest lodges and camps have swimming pools and playgrounds. Most of the accommodations are fenced in, so you won’t get any unwanted visitors stalking you or your little ones. There are a number of tar roads through the park and around many of the wildlife hotspots. Pilanesberg gets very busy during the school holidays, but the abundance of Big 5 makes up for that. If you want to really get that sense of “wild Africa” Pilanesberg isn’t for you. In case you want your whole family to see the Big 5 as quickly and painlessly as possible, look no further.

Pilanesberg Safari Tours

3. Madikwe Game Reserve

5 of the Best Family-Friendly Safaris in South Africa - Madikwe

Madikwe Game Reserve is malaria-free and certainly the best private game reserve in South Africa’s North-West Province and great for a family-friendly safari.  Covering an area that used to be abandoned farmland, it is now bursting with big game. A true triumph of conservation. Madikwe is approximately a 4-hour drive from Johannesburg and 2 hours from Gaborone, across the border in Botswana. Or you can fly in from Jo’Burg in an hour.

Madikwe is also close to Pilanesberg National Park and Sun City. Easy to make it a part of an itinerary that includes all three. Jaci’s Lodges, in particular, cater to children of all ages. They provide special “Jungle Drives” for kids under four years old. There is also the “Children’s Safari” - for slightly older kids. The Children's Safari teaches them valuable lessons about the bush, including survival techniques, tracking and bush medicine. Children are given lots of special attention at Madikwe River Lodge.

Madikwe Safari Tours

4. Shamwari Game Reserve

5 of the Best Family-Friendly Safaris in South Africa - Shamwari

Shamwari Game Reserve is a little pricey. It’s one of the most family-friendly safaris of South Africa’s luxury private game reserves. The reserve is an easy hour or so drive from the city of Port Elizabeth.

Inside Shamwari, Riverdene Family Lodge is specifically geared to families. Seven of the nine rooms are interleading; there is a pool, a supervised jungle gym, a children’s playroom and a nanny service. Unlike Shamwari’s other lodges, there is a perimeter electric fence.  Children can also engage in the special “kids on safari”  program. The program will take them to the Animal Rehabilitation Centre and Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries within the reserve.  For any of the child-friendly features, Riverdene and the whole of Shamwari still exude exclusivity and bush tranquility. And the Big 5 are pretty much guaranteed.

Shamwari Safari Tours

5. Addo Elephant National Park

5 of the Best Family-Friendly Safaris in South Africa - Addo

Addo Elephant National Park does exactly what it says on the tin: it’s absolutely overflowing with elephants - with herds sometimes numbering around 100. The rest of the Big 5 are all here too. You can even see sharks and whales (at the right time of year) from the coastal sections of this big and much-loved national park. You can get to Addo from Port Elizabeth in less than an hour by car. Once inside the park, there are a number of tar roads and cheap camping and self-catering options.

The cheapest and most cheerful of the bunch is Addo Rest Camp, which is more like a small village. It has 64 rooms and 30 camping pitches, a well-stocked shop, a restaurant and even a floodlit waterhole, so you can spot the wildlife without having to even get into the car. Like all of the Eastern Cape’s parks and reserves, Addo is malaria-free.

Family and Kid-Friendly Safaris in Africa

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris.

Team Member Headshot

By Megan Warrington

Safari Travel Planner

In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, finding opportunities to truly connect with family has become increasingly rare. A family safari in Africa emerges as a serene oasis, offering families a chance to step away from the digital clutter and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. Going on a family safari tour is not just a vacation; it’s an immersive experience that combines the thrill of adventure with the invaluable lessons only nature can teach.

Africa’s diverse landscapes serve as the backdrop for a variety of family-oriented safaris. Imagine witnessing the grandeur of the wildebeest migration across the plains of Kenya’s Masai Mara or coming face-to-face with the gentle giants of the forest during a gorilla trekking expedition in Uganda. Each kid-friendly safari is designed to provide thrilling encounters that captivate the young and the old alike.

The experiences on a family safari in Africa extend far beyond the wildlife sightings. It’s about the shared moments of discovery and wonder, from the exhilaration of spotting a pride of lions during a game drive to the simple joy of listening to stories around a crackling campfire under a canopy of stars. These moments, free from the distractions of everyday life, allow families to forge deeper bonds with one another.

Faqs about family and kid-friendly safaris in africa.

  • Children under the age of five are advised not to travel to areas at high risk of malaria.
  • Complications and death due to malaria are high among children, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.
  • Mefloquine is prescribed to babies and children as well as are also available in syrup form - which makes it easier for children to take. Doxycycline should be taken by pregnant women or by children younger than 10 years since it can interfere with growing teeth and bones. Malanil is not licensed in South Africa for use in children and the paediatric dosage is therefore not available in South Africa. However, it is advised that Malanil may be used by children weighing more than 40 kilograms. Paediatric must be prescribed by a medical professional, as an overdose of the medication can be fatal. The dose is calculated according to the weight of the child - and a medical history must be taking into account to determine contra-indications.
  • Family safaris in Africa are a worthwhile and meaningful experience. Aside from spending quality time with your nearest and dearest under a wide blue African sky, a safari in Africa offers invaluable experiences including unique cultural experiences, memorable wildlife sightings, and the opportunity to learn more about nature.
  • Some areas won’t suit the family and it's also wise to be aware of malaria in others, however, South Africa has a few malaria-free safari locations and there are other safari lodges and bush camps throughout Africa that cater to young children and toddlers, just do the research beforehand.

Key Questions:

Are children allowed on safari .

Most game reserves and safari parks will be open to families with children, and many will have child-friendly activities. Game drives can be a wonderful chance for children to engage with the natural world, and camps — such as those inside places like the Kruger National Park — are fantastic for allowing kids to roam freely while staying safe.

Which safari is best for kids?

Both Madikwe and Addo offer family-friendly safaris, providing specially crafted activities and accommodations suitable for young adventurers.

Can you take children on safari in South Africa?

Absolutely! From the Kruger to the Kalahari, there are so many family-friendly game reserves. This self-drive safari will take you through Cape Town and parts of the Western Cape, through to a Big Five safari at the Eastern Cape’s Shamwari Game Reserve. South Africa is amazingly family-friendly, as this Garden Route safari will show. Explore Cape Town, Hermanus, and end off in the Gondwana Private Game Reserve. Here, kids can enjoy an exciting array of activities such as Big 5 game drives, mountain biking, hikes, and the popular Junior Ranger program (while you enjoy the Africology spa treatments).

How to do a family safari?

A family safari is most successful when everyone is engaged and enjoying themselves. Here are a few tips to ensure your safari goes smoothly:

  • Choose family-friendly destinations: Opt for safari destinations like Madikwe Game Reserve, Shamwari, or the Addo Elephant National Park, known for their family-centric approach. These parks offer tailored activities and accommodations, ensuring an engaging experience for children. Many family-friendly reserves will also have child-minding and babysitting services available, which can contribute to ensuring the vacation is relaxing for everyone. Book a babysitter for a parent-only candle-lit dinner, or even a sleep-out under the stars.
  • Educate and excite: Before the safari, share interesting facts about the wildlife they might encounter. Engage their curiosity by discussing the Big Five and the unique features of each animal. This knowledge enhances the excitement and appreciation for the safari experience.
  • Timing is key: Consider the timing of your safari game drives. Morning and late afternoon drives are optimal for wildlife sightings, and frequent sightings keep kids engaged. Plan breaks in between to accommodate the attention span of younger adventurers and prevent fatigue. Find a lodge with a pool and activities geared towards kids — it gets hot out in the bush, and a cooling swim is great for everyone. Traveling with teens? Nighttime drives can be the perfect way to keep teens engaged — it’s exciting and unusual, and night-prowling animals are just something else to experience in person.
  • Pack essentials for comfort: Ensure your safari vehicle is equipped with essentials like snacks, water, and comfortable seating. Pack sunscreen, hats, and insect repellent to protect against the elements. A comfortable child is a happy child on safari. Just remember that many parks have very bad cell service and internet coverage, so packing the iPad for a self-drive trip may not be as helpful as you think.
  • Involve them in the experience: Encourage kids to actively participate. Provide them with binoculars and a small camera to capture their perspective of the safari. Engaging them in the experience fosters a sense of ownership and excitement. Put together a bingo card of animals they might see while on game drives — kids love having something to tick off a list as much as we do!
  • Wildlife-themed activities: Extend the safari experience beyond game drives. Incorporate wildlife-themed activities like nature walks, junior ranger programs, or storytelling sessions around the campfire. These activities add a layer of fun and education to the vacation, making it one they’ll remember forever.
  • Be flexible with itinerary: Flexibility is key when traveling with kids. Be open to adjustments in the itinerary based on their interests and energy levels. A flexible approach ensures that the safari remains an enjoyable adventure for the entire family.

kid friendly safari cape town

What is the best age to take a child on a safari?

The best age to take kids on safari will depend on your child. Young kids and babies might sleep for the bulk of a game drive, but an inconsolable baby or toddler is going to be hard for you to deal with when out in the bush. In general, we find that kids upwards of about four or five years old enjoy safaris, with their interest peaking as they get older. If you’re traveling with younger kids, try to keep game drives short — 1 to 2 hours at the most.

Another thing to note is that many game reserves will not allow children under six on group game drives. So if you’re traveling with young kids, make sure to book private game drives, so the kids can come along. Many South African reserves have plenty of rest stops, bird hides, and lookout points for a chance to stretch your legs. While you might not struggle to sit in the car for hours on end, a 15-minute stop at a viewpoint for a run around can make all the difference for kids.

kid friendly safari cape town

Where is the best place to go for a family safari in Africa?

You really can’t go wrong with Addo Elephant Park, anywhere in the Kruger or Greater Kruger areas (such as the Sabi Sands ), and the many parks in the Western and Eastern Capes are incredible for kids. The Pilanesberg is right next door to Sun City, and a combination holiday of those two locations can be the ultimate vacation that suits all family members.

The 8 best safari day trips and weekends from Cape Town

Track down the elusive ‘Big Five’, and have a whale of a time doing it

Alicia Erickson

Can you go on a safari from Cape Town? It’s a question often asked by curious travellers thinking of planning a trip to the Mother City, unsure of whether they’ll be able to catch a glimpse of various fantastic creatures. Happily, the answer is a big ‘Yes indeed.’ Cape Town’s charm extends far beyond the urban centre, and one of its most alluring elements – beyond the mesmerising mountain views and glimmering Atlantic Seaboard – is its proximity to nature.

South Africa is renowned for its wildlife, and while the Western Cape may be a little more under-the-radar in this arena than other regions, it still has its fair share of nature reserves. Just a short drive from Cape Town you can spot the ‘Big Five’ (that ’s:  lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and African buffaloes) roaming the veld, learn about conservation efforts and spot whales breaching from the Atlantic Coast. For those wanting to take a walk on the wild side, here are the best lodges and reserves for a safari day trip from Cape Town.

1.  Aquila Game Reserve

At just under a two-hour drive from the city, Aquila Game Reserve has certainly earned a name for itself as a top safari experience near Cape Town. The reserve helped reintroduce the Big Five to the Western Cape and is rooted in wildlife rehabilitation, land protection and community support. Whether you opt for a day trip or book a couple of nights, you can take a traditional safari in an off-road vehicle or choose to search for the Big Five from a quad bike. If you’re lucky, you may just spot the elusive Cape mountain leopard. After a day of wildlife thrills, soak in the infinity pool, refuel with some traditional South African cuisine or treat yourself to a spa afternoon. Accommodation ranges from rustic digs to plush cottages.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

2.  Inverdoorn Game Reserve

A Big Five game reserve located around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town, Inverdoorn Game Reserve is a wild escape into the arid plains of the vast, dessert-like Karoo region. A home to lions, elephants, giraffe, zebras, hippos and wildebeest, Inverdoorn also hosts a cheetah rescue and rehabilitation centre. This conseration-focused establishment offers an opportunity to disconnect in the wilderness while searching for some of South Africa’s most exciting creatures. Rest your head in cosy, tented camps and relax in a pool with views over the veld and golden mountains on the horizon.

Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

3.  Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve

One of the closest safari experiences to Cape Town, Fairy Glen Private Game Reserve is set against the craggy foothills of the Brandwacht Mountains. Just over an hour from the city by car, Fairy Glen transports visitors to a magical, rustic setting, with options for both day and overnight safaris. Count yourself extra lucky if you spot a leopard, but elephants, lions and other creatures roam the plains in relative abundance. Stay overnight in the self-catering accommodation to maximise your chances of spotting various fantastic beasts at sunrise and sunset.

Goudkop Bush Camp

4.  Goudkop Bush Camp

This simple and underrated wildlife destination is found two hours north of Cape Town. Goudkop Bush Camp is a quiet cattle and sheep farm on Skrik van Rondom Farmstall, set in the heart of the Sandveld Nature Reserve. Stay in a thatched roof hut tucked into the slopes of the valley, hike along rocky trails, look for elk and other wildlife on a game drive, or simply unwind and do nothing in this slice of nature. The on-site restaurant and farm shop will keep you happily fed and watered during your stay.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

5.  Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Stretching across 58,000 hectares, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a pristine and unparalleled experience in the South African wilderness. A three-and-a-half-hour drive from Cape Town – taking in the stunning scenery of the R62 tourist route along the way – will get you to Sanbona, situated in the rugged and beautiful valley of the Little Karoo, just outside Montagu. Treat yourself to a weekend of wildlife viewings rooted in conservation, while unwinding in luxury safari tents or manor houses among the still plains. Elephants, lions and giraffes are all in the mix when you’re on a nature walk or a safari drive through the rolling hills and dramatic rock formations. If you fancy tracking down some visual wonders that are even easier to locate, the stargazing here is also pretty spectacular.

Gondwana Private Game Reserve

6.  Gondwana Private Game Reserve

Situated along the Garden Route in Mossel Bay, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a little further from Cape Town (a four-and-a-half-hour drive), but certainly worth the journey if time is on your side. Eco-friendly camps and villas ooze luxury safari aesthetic, while also blending into the towering green hills. From spotting elephants wandering the reserve and lions napping in the sun, to learning about the native fynbos species and searching for sunbirds, falcons and cranes on a bird-centric safari, a weekend at Gondwana promises to be a wild ride.

Grootbos Nature Reserve

7.  Grootbos Nature Reserve

Grootbos Nature Reserve embodies the meaning of ‘where the mountains meet the sea.’ Throw some forests into the equation, and you’ve got a spectacular eco-reserve. Just over two hours from Cape Town, Grootbos transports its guests deep into nature and offers an experience that’s notably different from a typical safari weekend. Set out from the elegant accommodation on a botanical walk to learn about endangered plants, look for over 20 species of mammal (including many types of antelope) and don’t forget to keep an eye out for whales appearing along the coast.

Hermanus

8.  Hermanus

Formerly a small fishing village, Hermanus has blossomed into a charming harbour town that attracts visitors from far and wide. Cape Town is a fantastic destination for families, offering a diverse range of experiences that cater to all ages.

As well as all the amenities you’d expect from a major metropolis, Cape Town also has a spectacular coastline, with more than 70 beaches and numerous playgrounds, parks and picnic spots in and around the city. While there's a huge amount to do in town, this beautiful coastal city also makes a good base for exploring the wider Western Cape region.

With a mix of exciting wildlife encounters, fun outdoor experiences and engaging cultural activities, Cape Town offers seemingly endless opportunities for a memorable family trip.

Is Cape Town good for kids?

Cape Town is very well equipped for traveling with children. You’ll find various family-friendly accommodations, including hotels, guesthouses and self-catering options, and local restaurants offering child-friendly menus and play areas.

The weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers, sunscreen and raincoats. For transportation, consider renting a car for the most flexibility, although hop-on hop-off buses and Uber are also viable ways to get around . Be aware that while most attractions accommodate strollers, some areas may be a bit uneven or have stairs, so plan accordingly.

Where is best in Cape Town for kids

Cape Town is generally very child-friendly. The V&A Waterfront has a range of restaurants and several attractions kids will love, including the Two Oceans Aquarium, Hamsley Tourist Train and the Cape Wheel . There’s also a giant chess board, and you’ll often see street performers, boats and, if you’re lucky, seals in the harbour.

Another great options for families is Muizenberg Beach with warmer water, safe swimming and water slides. Closer to the city, Green Point Urban Park is a great place for kids to run around with several picnic areas, three playgrounds for different age groups, a biodiversity trail and lovely scenery.

Best things to do in Cape Town with babies and toddlers

See the penguin colony on boulders beach.

Introduce your toddler to the local wildlife at Boulders Beach, home to a thriving colony of African penguins . Little ones will love watching the creatures waddle and play in their natural habitat, just a few feet away. The well-maintained boardwalks offer safe, easy access for strollers, and the sheltered coves and calm waters are great for toddlers to play.

Go strawberry picking in Stellenbosch

Strawberry picking in Stellenbosch is a delightful outing for families with toddlers. The surroundings are beautiful, and your little one can pluck – and eat – the juicy berries straight from the vine. The fun doesn't stop there; many farms also have play areas, tractor rides and farm animals.

Best things to do in Cape Town with kids

Get handsy at the two oceans aquarium.

Discover a world of underwater wonders at the Two Oceans Aquarium , where children can see a wide range of marine life, including playful seals, vibrant tropical fish and, of course, various types of sharks. They can also gently touch starfish and sea urchins at the interactive touch pools – a hands-on learning experience. Check the feeding times before you go.

Visit a wine estate in the Cape Winelands

The Winelands are just an hour from Cape Town, and many of the wine estates have activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Playgrounds, picnics and expansive lawns are just the beginning. While parents try the local wine, Spier  in Stellenbosch offers grape-juice adventures for kids, as well as Eagle Encounters sessions that give children the opportunity to see the majestic birds up close.

Nearby at  Boschendal , you’ll find Boschendal Tree House with an organic garden, farm animals and natural play areas. Kids can join in workshops, go on nature walks or try out the pump track; parents can enjoy a glass of wine and explore the lovely estate.

Take a ride at the Cool Runnings tobogganing track

Situated in Tygervalley, this exhilarating tobogganing experience lets kids (and their parents) zip down a stainless-steel track on a wheeled sled, reaching speeds of up to 40km/h. Even young children can join in the fun, either riding solo or with an adult. There are also arcade games, miniature golf and a café on-site.

Wander through Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

Spend an afternoon or more exploring Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden . The gardens are situated at the foot of Table Mountain, and kids will love wandering through the winding pathways and lush greenery.

The Boomslang Canopy Walkway extends high above the treetops (as a bonus, it’s also stroller-friendly), and the Sculpture Garden is a favorite with kids. Take a picnic or stop at one of the on-site cafes for lunch.

Young white girl looking out over Cape Town through binoculars at the top of Table Mountain, South Africa

Make it to the top of Table Mountain

A trip to Cape Town is not complete with going up Table Mountain . Regardless of how you get there – you can hike or take the cable car, depending on the ages and endurance levels of your kids – you’ll have panoramic views over the city.

At the top of the mountain, there are several walking trails where you can see wildflowers, more stunning views and the occasional small animal. There is also a popular kids’ treasure hunt and a café.

See birds and monkeys at the World of Birds wildlife sanctuary

More than 3000 bird species and many small mammals live at the largest bird park in Africa, the World of Birds wildlife sanctuary in Hout Bay.

Walk through the huge aviaries to see the birds up close, then visit the Monkey Jungle, where the squirrel monkeys' antics will delight the kids. You can also learn about the sanctuary’s conservation efforts when you visit.

Best things to do in Cape Town with teenagers and tweenagers

Learn about south africa's history on robben island.

A former prison that once held political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, Robben Island  is a Unesco World Heritage Site, accessible by a scenic ferry ride from Cape Town's waterfront .

Visiting the island is an interesting way for young people to learn about South Africa’s history. Guided tours led by former inmates offer a unique firsthand perspective on life in the prison, which can lead to thought-provoking conversations with teenagers about resilience and human rights. The island also has diverse flowers and birds, including a penguin colony.

Head to the coast for water sports

Cape Town's coastline is a stunning playground for teenagers who enjoy water sports or want to have a go for the first time. Start with surfing and kiteboarding in Muizenberg, or try stand-up paddleboarding in Clifton. To see the marine life, go snorkeling or scuba diving at False Bay or Hout Bay. Alternatively, embark on a sea-kayaking tour to encounter seals, penguins and even dolphins up close.

Game Reserves Near Cape Town

Top Five Game Reserves for Safaris Near Cape Town

kid friendly safari cape town

Cape Town is known around the world for its stunning scenery, world-class restaurants, and fascinating cultural landmarks (including Robben Island and Bo-Kaap ). However, what many visitors don't know is that the city is also a convenient base for exploring some of the finest game reserves in the Western Cape. If you don't have time to head north to major South African reserves like Kruger or Mkhuze , don't worry; you can also look for safari animals in Cape Town's backyard. All of the reserves listed in this article are within a few hours' drive of the Mother City. They're also malaria -free.

Note: Driving times given below are based on departure from central Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront and may be considerably shorter or longer if you're staying in the suburbs. For the quickest travel times, make sure to plan your journey around off-peak traffic hours.

Buffelsfontein Game Reserve

Although safari purists may balk at the idea of a reserve that keeps its carnivores in separate enclosures, Buffelsfontein Game Reserve is nevertheless the most convenient option for those with limited time to spare. As a 1,600-hectare converted cattle ranch, the park is just over an hour's drive from central Cape Town and is home to four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, and white rhino). Guests will also have the opportunity to spot cheetah , giraffe, zebra, and several iconic antelope species on a half or full guided game drive.

The half drive lasts for 1.5 hours, while the full drive takes around three hours and departs at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. If you book an afternoon full drive on any day except Sunday, you'll also get to see the park's carnivores being fed. For a totally different safari experience, consider booking a mountain bike safari instead. If you do have time to extend your stay, there are a variety of accommodation options, from bush camps and self-catering chalets for budget travelers to more luxurious four-sleeper cottages. There's a restaurant, swimming pool, and bar on-site.

Aquila Private Game Reserve

Located a two-hour drive northeast of Cape Town, Aquila Private Game Reserve  is a 4-star park offering half-day, full-day, and overnight safari options. The 10,000-hectare conservancy is home to the Big Five including rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, and buffalo. All five of these species have been reintroduced to the Western Cape after being driven to the brink of extinction by the big game hunters of the past. The park is also home to the Aquila Animal Rescue and Conservation Centre , which provides a sanctuary for rescued safari animals that are no longer able to survive in the wild.

If the idea of a traditional safari vehicle is a little too tame, consider booking a horse-ride or quad bike safari instead. Although the park is close enough for a day trip from Cape Town, overnight accommodations include a luxury lodge and several exquisite chalets. The chalets offer indoor fireplaces and outdoor showers, allowing you to fully appreciate the magic of life in the bush. Other useful amenities include a bar, a restaurant, an infinity pool, and a spa. Aquila also offers transfers from Cape Town hotels via mini-bus, private vehicle, airplane, or helicopter.

Inverdoorn Game Reserve

Half an hour beyond Aquila Private Game Reserve lies  Inverdoorn Game Reserve , another 10,000-hectare protected area in the Klein Karoo. Inverdoorn achieved Big Five status in 2012 with the introduction of a herd of elephants. It is also home to non-profit organization Western Cape Cheetah Conservation and visitors are given the opportunity to see these magnificent predators up close. Since 2018, the reserve has implemented a strict no-touch policy in accordance with the latest ethical conservation practices.

The park also offers a choice of 4- and 5-star accommodation options. There's a tented camp and a series of well-appointed chalets, while the multiple-room guest houses are perfect for families or friends traveling together. For the last word in luxury, opt for a night in the exquisite Ambassador Suite. Overnight guests are invited to join a walking safari at sunrise, when the animals of the reserve are at their most active. The route to Inverdoorn takes you through the Cape Winelands ; consider stopping for a tasting along the way.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

From Cape Town, you can drive to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in approximately three hours. Nestled at the foot of the Warmwaterberg Mountains, the reserve is a Klein Karoo paradise known for its indigenous wildlife and ancient rock art . Measuring some 54,000 hectares, it is also made special by its vast, sprawling landscapes. You'll find the Big Five here, as well as cheetah and smaller native mammals including the rare riverine rabbit. The wide range of activities on offer include birdwatching, nature walks, rock art tours, and stargazing. Boat safaris on Bellair Dam offer a different game-viewing perspective.

Since game drives take place at sunrise and sunset, most visitors to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve opt to stay overnight. There are three luxury lodges to choose from, including a tented camp with spa baths, private decks, and a fine-dining restaurant. If you want to experience Africa at its most authentic, consider a walking safari with a stay at the back-to-basics Explorer Camp. A kids' program , childminding services, and a dedicated family lodge make this the ideal choice for those traveling with children.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

When you've ticked the Big Five off your bucket-list, consider taking a two-hour drive southeast of Cape Town to coastal  Grootbos Private Nature Reserve . Located at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the reserve is the ultimate destination for spotting the Marine Big Five: namely, great white sharks, southern right whales, bottlenose dolphins, African penguins, and Cape fur seals. The lodge offers coastal safaris in association with Dyer Island Cruises . Cage diving with great white sharks , whale-watching tours, horse-riding, nature walks, and botanical safaris are also offered.

The reserve, which measures 2,500 hectares, is home to almost 800 different plant species; 100 of which are endangered and six of which were discovered for the first time on site. Its protected milkwood forests are over 1,000 years old. In order to have enough time to explore its wonders, you can stay overnight either at the Garden Lodge, the Forest Lodge, or in a private luxury villa. Each eco-friendly option is designed to complement the reserve's incredible natural beauty. Amenities range from tranquil swimming pools to organic 5-star dining.
