What is Kualoa Ranch?

Kualoa Ranch is a private nature preserve with 4,000 acres of land on the windward side of Oahu, about a 45-drive from Waikiki and Honolulu. The ranch is known for its beautiful scenery, which has been featured in numerous films and television shows over the past decades.

If you are a big fan of movies, it would be a definite yes! The ranch is home to many film sites, including Jurassic Park, Godzilla, and Pearl Harbor. Kualoa Ranch – Ocean Voyage Tour

Looking to explore the natural beauty of Oahu without breaking a sweat? The ocean voyage tour is a great way to take in the beautiful scenery of Kaneohe Bay.

The tour starts with a short ride across Moli’i Fishpond, an ancient Hawaiian pond in use more than 800 years ago to supply local villages with fish, where you will learn about traditional aquaculture practices in Hawaii. On the other side of the fishpond, you will arrive at Secret Island where a spacious catamaran awaits to take you on a 45 minute ocean cruise.

Along the way, keep an eye out for the spots where some of your favorite Hollywood blockbusters were shot. The eye-catching scenery has served as the backdrop for many Hollywood films including Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Pearl Harbor and 50 First Dates.

Kualoa Ranch – Aloha Aina Farm Tour

To be honest, out of all Kualoa Ranch tours, I’m the least impressed with Aloha Aina Tour. Is it a bad experience? No, it’s actually a quite interesting tropical gardens tour combined with a canoe ride where you will get to learn about fragrant fruit trees and tropical flowers. At Oahu’s most well-preserved ancient Hawaiian fishponds (Moli’i), you will get to learn about early Hawaiian aquaculture practices and how fish was farmed.

But is Aloha Aina Tour worth the money? It really depends on your interest, but I think the experience falls short compared to other tours and activities that are offered at Kualoa Ranch.

What is the best Kualoa Ranch tour?

The best and most highly-rated Kualoa Ranch tour is the ATV Raptor Tour , offering an exhilarating ride through the jungle and movie sites on all-terrain vehciles.

Other popular tours include the Jurassic Valley Zipline which gives guests a bird’s-eye view of the lush valley below, and the Movies Tour which takes guests to some of the filming locations for popular movies and TV shows.

My Honest Review of Kualoa Ranch Tours

Out of all the most popular tours at Kualoa Ranch, I think ATV tour is the best tour in terms of unique experience and value for money.

Kualoa Ranch ATV Tour vs Movies Tour vs Jungle Tour

The ATV Raptor Tour takes you off the beaten path and into some of the most beautiful and remote parts of the ranch while also include some stops from the Movies Tour and the Jungle Tour, giving you the best value for money. You will get to see firsthand how the ranch is managed and learn about its cattle operation. And, of course, the scenery is simply breathtaking.

In order to drive the all-terrain vehicle, you have to be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license. It’s amazing to feel that you’re in control of your exploration! Some parts of the dirt trails may be muddy, so you may want to bring a change of clothes or wet wipes with you.

Because the ATV tour will include some stops from the Movies Tour and the Jungle Tour, if you want to add another tour to stay longer at Kualoa Ranch, I’d suggest you add the Ocean Voyage Tour to avoid repetitive stops.

Kualoa Ranch Movies Tour vs Jungle Tour

If the possibility of getting dirty on a thrilling jungle ride turns you away from the ATV tour, both the Kualoa Ranch Movies Tour and Jungle Tour would be great alternatives. I find the Movies tour and Jungle tour quite similar in that they both included stops at some of the filming sites.

However, the Movies Tour had more filming stops overall, and you might even get to see a filming in progress if you’re lucky. The Jungle Expediton Tour includes a short hike to a secluded lookout, where you can enjoy some stunning views.

If you’re a big movie fan, you may find the Movies tour more fun. If not, the Jungle Expedition tour has the perfect combination between stops at beautiful nature and filming locations.

Useful Tips for Kualoa Ranch Movies Tour and Jungle Tour : While most people will try to sit in the front of the shuttle, I find it better to sit at the end for both Hollywood Movie Sites Tour and Jungle Expedition Tour. That way, you will be the first to get off and take pictures before everyone else.

We were the first to get off at the Jurassic World movie site and we had so much time to explore and take photos without others in the frame. After that, we had more time to explore the sites while others were waiting in line for their turns to take pictures.

Brief History of Kualoa Ranch in Hawaii

Kualoa Ranch was founded by Dr. Gerritt P. Judd back in 1850. He came to Hawaii from the East Coast to help treat Native Hawaiians who were battling diseases and new illnesses.

After seeing how Waikiki and Honolulu were quickly developing, he decided to purchase the 4,000-acre Kualoa Ranch property for $10,000 in order to preserve the sacred land.

Image of a red ranch with a bunch of concrete stairs in front and green mountains in the background.

Today, eight generations later, the land is still owned and managed by Dr. Judd’s descendants. They offer tours, event rentals, and commercial activities in order to keep the land at Kualoa undeveloped and pristine for future generations.

Eating at Pat’s Cafe: a Kualoa Ranch Restaurant

One of the cool things about Kualoa Ranch being an actual working cattle ranch and farm is that they have some of the freshest food items. I highly recommend stopping at Pat’s Cafe for a meal.

Image of tropical chicken with rice and macaroni salad at the Kualoa Ranch restaurant.

They have a great menu selection of classic American dishes plus some with islands twists. You’ll order your food at the counter and then pick it up and find a table.

They also have lots of grab and go snacks and beverages, so it’s a great place to stop after you’ve checked in for your tour and are waiting around.

Kualoa Ranch Gift Shop

Our family’s motto is we’ve never met a gift shop we didn’t like. Well, it’s really the case with this one!

Image of a rack of Aloha shirts with baby clothes in the background.

They have a TON of cool items if you’re Jurassic Park fans or love the other movies filmed here. There’s quite the selection of merchandise.

I’d recommend placing an order for your food first and then head into the gifts shop (it’s in the same building) to go shopping.

Other Things to do Near Kualoa Ranch

One of the top questions I see families ask is about what else there is to do near Kualoa Ranch. Maybe you have a morning tour and want to know how to spend the rest of your day if you stay on that side of the island.

Here are a few easy suggetions:

Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden

The botanical gardens in Hawaii are pretty impressive and one of the most famous gardens on Oahu is the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden.

Tips for Hawaii on a Budget featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: HO'OMALUHIA BOTANICAL GARDEN is a popular photo spot on Oahu

It’s only a few minutes away from Kualoa Ranch and it’s one of the top places to take Instagram photos on Oahu . You’ve probably seen their iconic entrance that features a road in the midst of a gorgeous garden.

But, they also have events throughout the year. And it’s just a pretty place to walk around.

Byodo-in Temple

Another thing to do in Kaneohe is check out the Byodo-In Temple . It’s also a nice photo spot and you really will feel like you’re touring Japan.

The Byodo-In Temple is a popular Oahu photography spot.

It doesn’t take very long to explore this area, so it makes a quick stop either before or after a tour at Kualoa Ranch.

Kualoa Beach Park

Finally, there’s always the BEACH!

Kualoa Beach Park is pretty awesome because it has a huge parking lot and a long stretch of beach. That means it’s really easy to visit.

Plus, it’s right across the street from a large grassy field. That’s a great spot for kids to burn off the rest of their energy before heading back into the car to drive back to your hotel.

Kualoa Ranch Tips for Families

I know a lot of families like to be spontaneous in Hawaii or wait to book activities until they get there. However, the most popular Kualoa Ranch tours often sell out months in advance.

Image of a boy wearing a Jurassic Park shirt in front of a wooden sign that says Kualoa Ranch.

So, if you know that you want to do a specific tour or have date restrictions, it’s best to book early!

Bring Extra Clothes

Depending on the tour you do, you might end up getting really dusty or at least sweaty. And some of the tours even require long pants and closed-toe shoes. That means you might be really hot by the end of the tour.

So, it’s nice if you can change into fresh clothing. And you might even want to bring baby wipes to wipe away sweat or dirt and feel a bit more refreshed.

Take Lots of Photos

There are so many epic views and cool movie sites to see that you’ll want a good camera with you (that can totally be a cell phone). You might also want to bring a gimbal or a GoPro if you want to capture video while doing the activity.

Family Matching Shirts

If you want to be “extra” you can really get into the spirit with matching Jurassic Park shirts for your whole family. I found our set on Etsy and they had a LOT of fun options!

Image of a family wearing matching Jurassic Park shirts.

You could also look on Amazon, Kohl’s, or Target to see what they have. We got a ton of compliments on our shirts and it made the kids feel special.

All You Need To Know About Visiting The Kualoa Ranch On O’ahu

If you’ve been looking for stuff to do whilst you’re on O’ahu, you’ve probably come across Kualoa Ranch and the tours that operate on it.

It’s a favorite filming site amongst popular Hollywood movies such as Jurassic Park, Godzilla and Kong Skull Island, there’s a reason these blockbuster movies chose to film here, it’s 4,000 acres of beautiful greenery.

All You Need To Know About Visiting The Kualoa Ranch On O’ahu

It really is a one in a lifetime chance to visit such amazing scenery in the flesh, and the plethora of tours, boat trips and horseback riding make it fun for the whole family.

Keep reading this article if you want to find out all you should know about visiting Kualoa Ranch and the best activities you should do if you visit.

How To Get To Kualoa Ranch

There’s two options you have if you’re traveling to Kualoa Ranch, that is by car or by shuttle.

Traveling By Car

If you’re driving to Kualoa Ranch the drive will be around 35-40 minutes from Waikīkī, the ranch is located on O’ahu’s windward side just north of Kāne’ohe. It’s an easy and beautiful drive and the parking there is free and simple.

Traveling By Shuttle

Shuttles will run from specific places in Waikīkī, these occur between 7:00am and 7:45am and will usually return approximately at 3:15pm. The pickup locations are The Modern Honolulu, the Aston Waikīkī Beach Hotel and the Sheraton Waikīkī Hotel.

The shuttles are available for specific tours only for around $30 per person + tax, so make sure to research if your tour qualifies before you go to avoid disappointment.

Why Do People Keep Going To Kualoa Ranch?

There’s no doubt that Kualoa Ranch is one of the most successful working ranches in Hawaii, it’s the 10th most visited attraction in the whole country and it boasted 488,605 visitors in 2016, so why is this ranch so much more popular than other ranches?

Because no other ranch can match the variety, reputation and beauty of the Kualoa Ranch. Whilst there are many film locations in the whole of Hawaii, no place can truly match what this ranch has to offer with its beautiful scenery, it’s truly something to marvel at.

All this talk about tours and tourism may be putting you off, you may be thinking that you don’t want to visit another tourist trap, but don’t let its popularity fool you.

Though the visitor center may seem buzzing with tourist activity, once you explore deeper into the ranch you’ll find that its agricultural and historical sites have remained largely untouched, making its natural landscape something to be in awe of.

Unfortunately you won’t be able to see much of the ranch without a tour of some sort, but be assured that the tours are brilliant and they’re definitely worth the money you’ll pay for them.

Most tours will operate through the same area- the Ka’a’awa Valley. If you’ve never heard of this stunning place, then you’re missing out. Its beautiful scenery and immense cultural significance makes this place truly special.

It was said that this was the site of kings, and in ancient times babies were brought here to learn the traditional ways of living and war.

The tours you embark on whether you’re on an ATV, an e-bike or just on an exploration tour, will all show you the beauty that this valley has to offer.

You’ll see its beautiful waterfalls, extensive valleys and rough jungles and hear about the ancient Hawaiian times in the Ka’a’awa Valley, and how it has shaped it into what it is now – a working ranch full of cattle.

What Movies Were Filmed At Kualoa Ranch?

There’s been hundreds of movies and tv shows filmed at Kualoa Ranch, more specifically in Ka’a’awa Valley. More notable movies include Jurassic Park, Pearl Harbor, 50 First Dates, Jumanji and so many more.

You may recognise Ka’a’awa Valley in some of your favorite tv shows too such as Hawaii Five-0, LOST and Magnum PI, again there’s so many more blockbusters that have been filmed here, you should definitely explore them whilst you’re at the ranch, which brings us perfectly into the types of activities you’ll want to do whilst you’re visiting.

What Activities Should You Do Whilst You’re There?

There’s a lot to choose from when deciding what tours you want to do in Kualoa Ranch, and it can be overwhelming to find the right one for you. Rest assured, we’ve compiled a list of the best activities and tours you should do whilst you’re there.

Movie Tours

Now, if you’re a tv and movie enthusiast you’ll probably already know the extensive amount of tv shows and movies filmed in Kualoa Ranch and its valleys.

In the Hollywood Movie Sites Tours you’ll be able to see the boneyard from Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla’s huge footprints and the Indominus rex paddock with its 60 foot walls along with the authentic dinosaur cages used in the movies.

The narration in the guide will explain where things were filmed and give you insight about the landscape that was used to film these incredible movies.

Riding in an open-air vehicle, you’ll get the best views possible of these movie locations and hold on because it’ll be a bumpy ride through the rainforest, giving you the best experience as if you were in the movies yourself!

Farm And Cultural Tours

If you’re not too bothered about the movies and tv shows that were filmed in the ranch, not to worry there’s plenty of other brilliant tours that revolve around how Kualoa operates as a working ranch, and the culture behind it.

These are more educational based but it’s super interesting to learn more about Kualoa as a working ranch.

The Aloha Aina Tour is great as it allows guests to see the beauty and calmness of one of the most well preserved fish ponds in O’ahu. You’ll be able to see a 1,000 year old pond in the flesh and learn about the ancient aquaculture practices that were undertaken in this very pond.

Later on guests will be taken on a trolley to explore the tropical flower and fruit gardens and learn more about the history of the ancient Hawaiians.

Another amazing tour you should experience is the Malama Experience. Be warned, this is very hands on, you could be assisting with cleaning, planting or harvesting and can even include thatching of the traditional Hawaiian grass huts.

This is certainly a different experience compared to the other activities available on the ranch, and it will teach you about the importance of sustainability and how important kalo is for Hawaiian sustenance and its cultural tie-in to Kualoa.

All You Need To Know About Visiting The Kualoa Ranch On O’ahu

If you’re an adrenaline junkie, this one is definitely for you. You’ll be riding off-road through the ranch’s deep valleys and spacious rainforests which will take you right through Jurassic Valley.

It includes narration as you pass through the various movie locations to give you information about where you are and what you’re seeing.

These multi-passenger ATVs mean that you can usually have up to five passengers, so you can have tons of fun with the whole family and explore the scenic valleys and remote areas. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart!

Ocean Tours

If you’re looking for a more relaxed tour of the ranch, look no further than the Ocean Voyage Tour.

You’ll embark on an hour-long cruise around northern O’ahu, taking in the breathtaking views of Kanē’ohe bay whilst having your captain commentate as you travel past Hōkūle’a Beach, Mokoli’i Island and the Ko’olau mountain range.

If you want an individual experience out on the water there’s usually some tours that offer a half-day beach hangout where you’ll have access to canoes, kayaks and paddleboards.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is the true ranch experience, you can experience Kualao’s magnificent scenery on a guided horseback ride tour.

You will get to ride though Jurassic Valley from the comfort of riding on your own well trained horse, if you love the outdoors and celebrating nature, this eco-friendly tour is definitely for you.

This won’t be for everybody, some people may prefer to use the ATV tours through Jurassic Valley to get an authentic experience and stick to horseback riding on a different tour through O’ahu where there will be less tourists and less commotion.

Dining And Catering

Kualoa has an extensive number of cafes on the ranch and each of them will typically have numerous great food options that are grown right there on the ranch.

Aunty Pat’s Cafe is a popular destination for hungry explorers, be aware that it’s popularity will mean that it’s subjected to a lot of tourist buzz, so you may have to wait a bit for the food.

It’s definitely a cafe you’ll want to eat at, it’s fresh Hawaiian style homemade cooking will leave you watering at the mouth. Out the back you can see beautiful views of the Kualoa mountains making it the perfect place to enjoy a nice hearty meal at.

If your accommodation is self catering, then you’ll want to shop at KualoaGrown Market for your food.

It boasts around 60 crops being grown on site and they raise and produce their own beef, pork, oysters, shrimp and lamb, consuming and buying from this market helps to boost the island community and supports a healthy food system.

Kualoa Gift Shop

If you want a memento of your breathtaking trip to Kualoa Ranch, this gift shop has it all. You can get t-shirts, hats, shorts and much more to accessorize and show off your experience at the ranch.

Or if you’re looking for something more unique, the gift shop offers Hawaiian crafts, tasty treats and many other gift items. Its selection of handcrafted jewelry and wood carvings make your gift individual and special to you, no handcrafted item will be the same.

Final Thoughts

Kualoa Ranch is a magnificent ranch, home to three valleys, dense rainforests and jungles.

It’s not hard to see why it’s such a popular tourist destination, the accolades it has from the number of blockbuster movies and tv shows it has provided setting to is enough to generate intrigue on its own.

It’s breathtaking scenery and cultural heritage makes it an amazing destination to learn more about.

The history and culture of this ranch goes all the way back to ancient times, and it’s interesting to learn about how the history of the beautiful landscape has shaped this ranch into what it is today.

Tour Reviews

Easy to use

My Husband and I visited Kualoa Ranch on our honeymoon. The package we pre-purchased came with hotel pickup and drop off, thank goodness for that or else it is a 1 hr (at best) drive out there. On arrival our bus load of people had to stay together as a staff member gave us a very brief tour of the check-in areas for different tours. Our first tour was the Garden and Fish Pond Tour. We drove in a no window bus down the road and were taken through an agricultural field of plants and trees, surprisingly very interesting. Next, we headed out to the fish pond where we learned about what fish they had there on a little boat, the view from here was amazing. The water pond and mountains were breathtaking.

We booked the fish pond and Garden tour and our tour guide was named Jimmy. I had a great time with him as my tour guide- I had so much fun and got to sample some of the things that are grown on the land. And I got a history lesson which I love because I love history. There is so much to do there you could spend the whole day there.

We took the Garden and Fish Pond Tour because we couldn’t get on the tour we wanted. As it turned out it was a very informative and enjoyable tour. We had a great tour guide, she lead the English tour. The catamaran cruise on the pond was wonderful. Highly recommended.

The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle.
