Linkin Park Cancels Tour After Chester Bennington's Death

July 21, 2017 / 5:07 PM PDT / KCAL News

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The band Linkin Park canceled its North American tour Friday after its lead singer, Chester Bennington, was found dead by hanging the day before.

"We are incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Chester Bennington. The Linkin Park One More Light North American Tour has been canceled and refunds are available at point of purchase. Our thoughts go out to all those affected," tour promoter Live Nation said in a statement.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office confirmed Friday that Bennington died by hanging. Coroner's office spokesman Ed Winter says the 41-year-old rocker hanged himself from a bedroom door in his home near Los Angeles. Bennington was found dead Thursday.

Winter says a half-empty bottle of alcohol was found in the room, but no drugs were evident. Bennington struggled with drug and alcohol addictions at various times during his life.

A suicide note was not found.

An autopsy has not yet been scheduled.

Bennington was one of two lead vocalists for Linkin Park, which became one of the most commercially successful acts of the 2000s. They won countless awards, including Grammys, and their hits include "In the End," ''What I've Done" and "Numb."

The Californian band were mid-way through their world tour in support of their US chart-topping album One More Light and had recently wrapped up the tour’s British leg with a show at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham on 6 July, just days prior to Bennington’s unexpected death.

Late on Friday night, tour promoter Live Nation released a statement explaining that the nu- metal band had cancelled all scheduled dates. The tour was due to start on 27 July in Mansfield, Massachusetts, and finish on 22 July at the Los Angeles’ Staples Centre.

Linkin Park has not released an official statement following Bennington’s death by suicide Thursday. However, via Twitter, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker paid tribute to Chester Bennington in a pair of tweets.

“Absolutely heartbroken. I’ll cherish every time we hung out or rocked a stage together. Condolences & prayers to all. So sad,” Barker wrote.

Linkin Park

Three members of Linkin Park are mulling a possible 2025 reunion tour and are considering hiring a female vocalist to succeed late lead singer Chester Bennington , several sources close to the band tell Billboard .

“Very, very cool guys and obviously a great band,” he said. “They’ve been around a long time and they’re still going for it,” he said. “It’s going to be tough without Chester, but we’ll see. I hear they got a girl singer now. That’s what I heard.”

Gordon later issued a statement saying his comments had been taken out of context, writing, “With regards to this linkin park singer thing. I know nothing about any of that.”

Earlier this month, Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee shot down rumors that she might be a candidate for the lead vocal gig. On April 23, the singer told iHeartRadio Canada that, while some Linkin Park fans had been voicing hopes for her to join the band, the group had not contacted her for the gig.

“But that’s awesome,” she said. “They should ask me about that. I don’t have a ton of free time, but I might do it part-time.”

Linkin Park is one of the most successful rock groups from the 2000s, having sold more than 29.4 million albums in the United States, according to Luminate. The band has charted 24 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including three top 10 hits: “In the End” in 2003, “What I’ve Done” in 2007 and “New Divide” in 2009.

The band has also racked up 37.2 million U.S. song downloads and a combined 11.6 billion official on-demand U.S. streams. It has additionally charted six No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, including One More Light , which debuted on May 17, 2017, two months before Bennington took his own life at his home in Southern California.

Billboard reached out to a representative for Linkin Park but did not receive a response.

Linkin Park Call Off Remaining Tour Dates After Chester Bennington Leg Injury

UPDATE: Linkin Park have now called off the remainder of their current tour dates after Chester Bennington had his injured leg checked out. They released the following statement on the matter: "Linkin Park regret to inform their fans they must cancel the remaining dates of The Hunting Party tour, due to a leg injury of lead vocalist Chester Bennington. The injury requires immediate medical attention making it physically impossible for Bennington to perform. Chester says, 'I'm really disappointed this injury has made it impossible to continue with this tour. The first couple shows were just magical. We will truly miss not being with our fans for the next few weeks. Hope to see you again soon.' Fans can seek refunds at point of purchase."

Those who've followed Linkin Park over the years have come to know that Chester Bennington is one of the more accident-prone rockers going. Unfortunately, the injury bug has struck again, with Linkin Park having to call off a pair of shows as a result.

The band issued a statement revealing that they are withdrawing from their shows in Pittsburgh tonight (Jan. 20) and Albany, N.Y. tomorrow night (Jan. 21) after Bennington suffered a leg injury. The rocker was seen sporting crutches during the band's recent show in Indianapolis, but the situation is less than ideal for the energetic, give it all style of Bennington.

The group's statement reads as follows:

Linkin Park regret to inform their fans that they must withdraw from their next two shows in Pittsburgh on January 20th, and January 21 in Albany, NY, due to a leg injury of lead vocalist Chester Bennington - who has been diagnosed as requiring immediate medical attention. Chester says, "I need to take the proper time to assess the severity of my injury and apologize for any disappointment this has caused. I look forward to seeing you all again soon.” Fans can seek refunds at point of purchase.

While the band did not specify Bennington's injury, there are reports that he broke his ankle. He even performed a couple of nights ago in Indianapolis using a scooter to support his leg (watch below).

Over the years, Bennington has been bitten by a recluse spider causing hospitalization, caught a viral infection in Europe, tore a ligament in his hand playing basketball, broke his wrist jumping off a platform during a show and suffered an injured shoulder during a tour of Asia that required surgery.

Linkin Park May Reunite for 2025 Tour with Female Vocalist

The band is reportedly fielding offers for a potential tour and festival headlining dates

Linkin Park May Reunite for 2025 Tour with Female Vocalist

Linkin Park is reportedly considering reuniting with a female vocalist in place of late frontman Chester Bennington.

Billboard reports that the band is fielding offers for a potential tour and festival headlining dates to take place in 2025. The identity of the female vocalist is not known at this time.

Following Bennington’s death July 2017, Linkin Park went on a permanent hiatus. In the time since then, the band’s surviving members have only performed together once – at a tribute concert honoring Bennington that was held in October 2017.

Earlier this year, Linkin Park released a new greatest hits album called Papercuts , which contained a previously unheard song called “Friendly Fire” featuring vocals from Bennington. “Friendly Fire” subsequently hit No. 1 on the US Rock and Alternative Airplay chart.

Linkin Park reportedly planning 2025 tour with new female vocalist

The band have been on hiatus since the tragic death of former frontman Chester Bennington in 2017

Linkin Park (Photo by Victor Chavez/WireImage)

Linkin Park are reportedly planning a 2025 tour and potentially looking to recruit a female vocalist to succeed late frontman Chester Bennington .

  • READ MORE: Linkin Park on unheard music: “There’s a lot of stuff that never saw the light of day”

The band have been on hiatus ever since the death of Bennington in 2017, who took his own life aged 41.

However, according to reports from Billboard , the band’s booking agency WME are now taking offers for concerts and festivals featuring Mike Shinoda , Brad Delson and Dave Farrell. Though it’s unclear who will succeed Bennington, a source has apparently told Billboard  that the band are looking for a female vocalist for their reunion.

The news follows a rumour sparked by Orgy’s Jay Gordon , who said he “heard” that Linkin Park “had a girl singer now” back in March. He later  issued a statement clarifying his comments, writing: “With regards to this Linkin Park singer thing,” he wrote. “I know nothing about any of that. People sure do love to take my words out of context. I love those guys and wish them the best.”

NME  have approached Linkin Park’s representatives for comment.

Since Bennington’s death, there have been some discussions on how to continue the band. Shinoda has spoken against the idea of having a Bennington hologram , calling it “creepy”, whilst Evanescence’s Amy Lee has emphatically shot down rumours that she would replace Bennington .

Recommended

Responding to the rumours, she said: “That is an incredible compliment. I have not heard that. No, I have not been contacted or anything like that. But [I’m a] huge fan feel like our worlds, our fanbases are a lot of the same people.”

Linkin Park released the 20th anniversary edition of ‘Meteora’ last year, where Shinoda and Delson spoke with NME in April about the potential for releasing new unheard material.

“It’s about honouring each creative opportunity as it comes along,” said Delson. “It was an embarrassingly haphazard accident that we found ‘Lost’ and it’s like doing as well as it’s doing. There was not a lot of premeditation beyond, ‘This feels good in the moment, let’s honour that’. It was organic and that’s always really served us. We’ve always done our best work when the creative opportunity feels right.”

Speaking to  NME separately in November, Shinoda commented on the future of Linkin Park, confirming that there was “nothing planned right now”.

“I always just tell people like when there’s news I’ll give you the news. We’ve been doing it for a while and I think our expectation for what’s a proper reissue is kind of high.

“I don’t love putting out Greatest Hits stuff or putting out re-masters of things we’ve done, [so] if we were to do a re-reissue of one of our Linkin Park albums, we want it to be a big deal. If we can’t make it that quality then we won’t do it. If it’s not great then I don’t think we should do it.”

Since that interview, Linkin Park have released the previously unheard ‘Friendly Fire’ with Bennington on vocals , which was originally recorded for the band’s 2017 sessions for ‘One More Light’. They also went on to release ‘Papercuts (Singles Collection 2000-2023)’ in April , a 20-song overview of the band’s best-selling tracks over the past two decades.

In other news, Chester Bennington’s son Draven dropped his debut single ‘F_w_Me’ last spring.

Linkin Park Cancel ‘Hunting Party’ Tour Following Injury

By Ryan Reed

Linkin Park  has canceled the remaining dates on their Hunting Party tour following a leg injury to frontman Chester Bennington. “I’m really disappointed this injury has made it impossible to continue with this tour,” the singer said in a statement  on Tuesday. “The first couple of shows were just magical. We will truly miss not being with our fans for the next few weeks. Hope to see you again soon.” The band did not divulge details of the injury, but said it required Bennington to undergo “immediate medical attention.” Fans are instructed to request refunds at point of purchase.

The band first canceled two shows – January 20th in Pittsburgh and January 21st in Albany, New York – before subsequently withdrawing from all remaining dates through February 14th, via a follow-up note on the  band’s website . “I need to take the proper time to assess the severity of my injury and apologize for any disappointment this has caused,” Bennington said.

Last June, Linkin Park released their sixth LP,   The Hunting Party , which returned the band to its heavy rock roots. “We can write a thousand ‘Iridescents’ and, as great as they are, it’s going to be boring,” Bennington told Rolling Stone . “With this album it was more like the opposite. We needed to maybe consider toning a song or two down a bit, because it’s fucking crazy the whole time.”

Earlier last year, co-frontman/multi-instrumentalist Mike Shinoda told  Rolling Stone  that the more aggressive direction had him worried about the band’s commercial prospects. “I was thinking, ‘Oh, shit. Rock radio’s not gonna play this, are they?” he said. “We can’t rely on a home run at radio. But I’m always up for a challenge. Besides, I believe in the music.”

FILE -- Chester Bennington, left, and Mike Shinoda of the musical group Linkin Park perform on...

(Gray News) - Linkin Park is reportedly considering reuniting with a female vocalist in place of late frontman Chester Bennington.

Billboard reports three members of the group are considering a 2025 reunion tour with a female vocalist to succeed Bennington.

Following Bennington’s death in July 2017, Linkin Park has been on a hiatus.

The band’s surviving members have only performed together at a tribute concert honoring Bennington in October 2017.

Earlier this year, the group released a new greatest hits album “Papercuts,” celebrating the 20th anniversary of their “Meteora” album.

“Papercuts” quickly grabbed the No. 1 spot for hard rock albums after its release, according to Billboard . It also featured a new song titled “Friendly Fire” featuring never-before-heard vocals from Bennington.

Since Bennington’s death, there have been some discussions on how to continue the band. The group’s co-lead vocalist Mike Shinoda has said when there is something to share about the band’s plans, he will.

Regarding the latest rumors, booking agency WME has been reportedly taking offers for a Linkin Park tour along with headlining festival dates featuring Shinoda, Brad Delson and Dave Farrell.

Billboard reports that a source said the band is hoping to find a female vocalist to front the reunited band.

Earlier this month, Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee shared with iHeartRadio Canada that Linkin Park fans have said they would want her to join the band, but the group had not contacted her yet for any such gig.

“I have not been contacted or anything like that. But [I’m a] huge fan, and our fanbases are a lot of the same people,” she said. “They should ask me about that. I don’t have a ton of free time, but I might do it part-time.”

The nu metal darlings’ booking agency is reportedly taking offers for their first tour since Chester Bennington’s death

Linkin Park - Meteora

Linkin Park are planning a reunion tour with a new lead vocalist for 2025, according to a new report.

The nu metal icons, whose 2000 debut album Hybrid Theory has been certified 12x Platinum in the United States, are hoping to return to the road with an unknown replacement for late vocalist Chester Bennington, says Billboard .

Bennington took his own life in July 2017, aged 41.

Outside of a tribute concert to the singer that October, the band haven’t performed live since.

They also haven’t released a new studio album since May 2017’s One More Light .

However, Billboard says that Linkin Park’s booking agency, WME, is now examining offers for a potential tour and festival headline dates featuring band members Mike Shinoda , Brad Delson and Dave Farrell.

One source told Billboard that the new vocalist the band are eyeing for the tour is female.

Multiple publications have approached Linkin Park representatives for comment and received no response.

Rumours of Linkin Park replacing Bennington with a female singer have circulated since early April.

Jay Gordon, frontman of US industrial rockers Orgy and former Linkin Park collaborator, told Wired In The Empire : “I hear they got a girl singer now. That’s what I heard.”

Gordon later retracted these claims via social media.

“With regards to this linkin park singer thing,” he posted on Facebook, “I know nothing about any of that. People sure do love to take my words out of context.

“I love those guys and wish them the best.

“Wow I was like what in the actual f**k? I said nothing about knowing any of that and never brought it up. I love Chester and there will never be another him ever.

“Strange that that dude [interviewer Mike Z] said something to me about it not the other way around. get real dude. Not cool!”

Despite Gordon’s statement that his interviewer “said something to me about it”, the singer made the comment about Bennington’s alleged replacement unprompted.

Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee was rumoured as a potential candidate for replacing Bennington, but denied that she’d been approached by Linkin Park in a recent interview.

“No, I have not been contacted or anything like that. But [I] feel like our worlds, our fanbases are a lot of the same people,” the frontwoman told iHeart Radio, Canada.

She later added: “But that’s awesome. They should ask me about that. I don't have a ton of free time, but I might do it part time.”

Linkin Park released their first greatest hits compilation, Papercuts (Singles Collection 2000–2023) , on April 12.

Report: linkin park discussing possible 2025 reunion tour.

Linkin Park

Linkin Park is in talks about a possible reunion tour for 2025,  Billboard reports.

According to the publication, the lineup would feature vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Mike Shinoda , guitarist Brad Delson and bassist Dave “Phoenix” Farrell alongside a possible unnamed female vocalist. Drummer Rob Bourdon and turntablist Joe Hahn are not mentioned.

Billboard ‘s report comes after  Jay Gordon of the band Orgy said in a radio interview that heard Linkin Park was getting back together with a female singer. He later posted that “I know nothing about any of that” and “People sure do love to take my words out of context.”

Linkin Park has not performed live since their 2017 tribute concert to late frontman Chester Bennington , who died earlier that year. Since then, the band has put out a variety of archival releases, including 20th anniversary reissues of 2000’s Hybrid Theory and 2003’s Meteora . In April, they released a greatest hits compilation titled Papercuts .

ABC Audio has reached out to Linkin Park’s reps for comment but has not received a response at press time.

Linkin Park Reportedly Considering 2025 Reunion Tour With Female Singer

Linkin Park is reportedly considering a 2025 reunion tour with a new vocalist filling in for the late Chester Bennington .

Multiple sources close to the band told Billboard that booking agency WME is taking offers for a tour and headlining festival dates featuring surviving members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, and Dave Farrell.

One insider added that the band is hoping to find a female singer to front the reunited version of Linkin Park, although no specific names have been revealed yet.

Linkin Park went on hiatus after Bennington's death in 2017, but Orgy frontman Jay Gordon sent the rumor mill into overdrive by claiming in a recent interview on KCAL 96.7's Wired in the Empire that they might be planning a comeback.

"Very, very cool guys and obviously a great band," he said. "They’ve been around a long time and they’re still going for it. It’s going to be tough without Chester, but we’ll see. I hear they got a girl singer now. That’s what I heard."

"Don’t quote me on that," Gordon added, immediately before everybody proceeded to quote him on that. "I'm not sure who the singer is going to be, but I heard it was gonna be female. They might just try to move on like that. That ought to be interesting."

Gordon seemed to walk back his comments in a statement on Facebook after the news went viral last month.

"With regards to this linkin park singer thing. I know nothing about any of that," he said. "People sure do love to take my words out of context. I love those guys and wish them the best. Wow I was like what in the actual f**k ? I said nothing about knowing any of that and never brought it up. I love Chester and there will never be another him ever. Strange that that dude said something to me about it not the other way around. get real dude. Not cool!"

"I wish them nothing but the best since such a terrible & tragic loss. He was a friend. Such a legendary guy in so many ways. Still bummed about it," he added in the comments. "These are my own words. Not some bs hype story to get people to engage. I would never speak on another band’s behalf. They communicate just fine on their own. If something like that happens I would hope THEY would be the ones to drop the news. I sure as hell wouldn’t do that to them or anyone. Click conjuring has never been my strong suit so don’t take my words outta context ever again bro."

So who could front Linkin Park? Fans have suggested Evanescence singer Amy Lee as a possibility, but last week, she told iHeartRadio that she hadn't heard anything.

"That is an incredible compliment. I have not heard that. No, I have not been contacted or anything like that," she said. "We met. We were in the studio at the same time. When we were making Fallen , I just briefly got to have a conversation or two with Chester. He was really sweet."

"But no, it's not true. But that's awesome. They should ask me about that. I don't have a ton of free time, but I might do it part time."

In a recent interview with Revolver about Linkin Park's new greatest hits compilation Papercuts (Singles Collection: 2000-2023) , Mike Shinoda said, "Rumors always go around. People always ask what’s next for the band, and the best answer I can ever give anybody is when there’s something to tell you, we will tell you."

"When there’s an announcement to be made, it will be on LinkinPark.com," he added. "If you’re hearing it from somebody else, you can trust that information as much as you want to trust it."
