Where to Buy Alcohol in Abu Dhabi

liquor shop in tourist club area

We here at The Tasting Class are nothing, if not thorough when sourcing our drinks. Therefore, following our extensive list of where to buy alcohol in Dubai , we have penned an extensive list of the numerous retailers to choose from in the UAE’s Capital City, Abu Dhabi.

Starting in Ghantoot, which is technically in Abu Dhabi but is actually located on the outskirts of Dubai and onward, our list spans the mainland to the Islands, to the out-of-way stores in the city center, to the dusty industrial zones.

Windmill’s ample store in Ghantoot is certainly worth a stop, especially if you are not venturing too far. Gray Mackenzie & Partners have seven shops throughout Abu Dhabi and stock a thoughtful portfolio, including some off-the-beaten-track wines. Spinneys grocery stores have ten dedicated alcohol shops around the city with well-rounded wine selections. African + Eastern’s Rawdhat store even offers a free coffee or soft drink on arrival! And Peninsula Drinks & Food , may have fewer outlets but handle an impressive selection of craft and independent products and famous international brands. For recommendations, you can even schedule a meeting with their Wine Manager.

All stores listed below deliver except Eurostar Cellars and The Spot Liquor Store. Spinneys also don’t deliver, but they do have a convenient ‘Click & Collect service’. See below for more details.

And in case you weren’t aware, Abu Dhabi no longer requires a license to buy alcohol.

At the time of writing, due to Covid-19 precautionary measures, Abu Dhabi residents and visitors must present a green pass on their ALHOSN app to enter shops and malls. So please bear this in mind before you venture out for your next shop.

Happy shopping!

Abu Dhabi area guide: where to eat, stay and shop in the Tourist Club Area

From the street-food spots to try to the hotels to have a staycation at, here's your guide to one of the capital's oldest neighbourhoods.

Abu Dhabi's Tourist Club Area, also known as Al Zahiyah, is one of the oldest districts in the capital and has been my home for the past four years. And, following a 10-year redevelopment , the area is finally popping again.

From breakfast to dinner: where to eat in Tourist Club Area

When it comes to food, Tourist Club Area has got a lot of great options with all sorts of small street side eateries to choose from. One that tops my list is Otantik . The Turkish restaurant, with tables set out on the pavement , is frequently packed late into the night . I recommend trying one of its most popular speciality dishes, the Ottoman chef's special beef ribs.

Another favourite of mine is Lebanese-Armenian restaurant Mayyas . Located at the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort, the restaurant gets extremely busy over the weekend and has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. The one dish I always have to order is the stuffed vine leaves with yoghurt; they're to die for. If you love Italian cuisine as much I do, then you also want to try Prego's  at the Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi . The restaurant also has an outdoor seating area, which is lovely on cooler days. I'm a huge fan of the mushroom risotto.

Where to shop

Your main destination for shopping is Abu Dhabi Mall.  It as been around for a long time and has all the stores you'd expect to find, covering everything from low to high-end goods. In terms of practicality for residents, the mall also has a new cinema space, a gym (Fitness First) and a supermarket (Abu Dhabi Co-op). You can even hop on the Big Bus Tour from there and explore other parts of the capital. Across from the mall is the much older Khalifa Complex B , which has a few shops, most prominently selling souvenirs.

Where to stay

Beach Rotana Abu Dhabi   is my top choice, with its room rates from Dh510, excluding taxes and fees. The five-star hotel offers direct access to Abu Dhabi Mall and provides some of the best amenities around, including beach access.

Other hotels in the area include the Le Meridien Abu Dhabi  and Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort .

Do: Although the neighbourhood is more focused on food and shopping, if you're looking to hang out with friends and do something fun, check out 2000 Billiards Centre  for a friendly – or competitive, depending on your company – game of pool.

Plus... you're in a very handy location for other Abu Dhabi hotspots

One of the really nice things about this part of downtown is that places are in relatively close proximity to each other. For residents, everything feels within walking distance. It also takes just a few minutes in the car to get to Al Maryah and Reem islands.

Ratings and Reviews

Tourist Club Area is a decent place to live. The location is great, with easy access to nearby supermarkets, restaurants, and public transportation. However, lacking green spaces and recreational areas can sometimes make it boring.

I have mixed sentiments regarding the neighbourhood as a Tourist Club Area resident. On the bright side, the location is convenient and accessible, with easy access to main roads and public transit. Even so, excessive traffic congestion during rush hour makes commuting difficult.

I am delighted to announce that the residential houses in this region are top-notch. The apartments are well-designed and roomy, providing adequate living space for singles and families. The buildings are well-maintained and furnished with modern facilities such as swimming pools, exercise centres, and 24-hour security.

The area’s basic services are great. The healthcare facilities are conveniently accessible and offer excellent services. The area’s schools are likewise remarkable, with well-qualified teachers committed to giving students an excellent education.

The area focuses mostly on the future of its residents. The neighbourhood has continually built and modernised its facilities to provide a higher living level for its citizens. The community is well-designed, and the authorities have taken every precaution to protect the inhabitants’ safety and security. Overall, the finest spot to live in Abu Dhabi.
