On October 13, 1995, Lotus Travel was founded in a 200 square foot cottage in Tacoma, Washington.  My network within the adoption community originated from a visa application case.  A travel agent in Seattle sought help from me for two visa applications for China. After obtaining the visas successfully, the travel agent waited until the last minute to pick them up. I felt anxious for the travelers, especially because I knew the couple was going to travel to China to adopt a Chinese orphan.  Sicne I had worked in the travel industry and had traveled extensively in China for over 10 years prior to immigrating to America,   I was confident that I could provide great customer service. Seeing a demand for adoption travel services, I contacted directors of adoption agencies throughout the United States.  I presented myself, my travel agency and our services, hoping that adoption agencies would co-operate closely with Lotus Travel to ensure adoptive families a safe and enjoyable trip to China. I was very fortunate to get to know a great lady who was a director of a Seattle adoption agency and had devoted herself to helping build families through adoption. After working closely with her agency, I received great compliments from many adoptive families because of my personalized services and families began calling me“Uncle Louie”. Other adoption agencies started to recommend to their clients that they use Lotus Travel for their adoption travel and we became a premier travel agency specializing in adoption travel. In 1998, we launched the Ladybug Adoption Packages, featuring premium economy class travel from Los Angeles to Guangzhou on China Southern Airlines with three night’s hotel accommodation at Guangzhou White Swan Hotel included. The package was immediately popular. Since then, with great support from adoptive families and agencies, we have become the No. 1 agency for China adoption travel and have served more than 50% of American families traveling to China for adoption each year. In 2000, Lotus Travel started its first China Homeland Heritage Tour for families traveling back to their children’s birth country to learn its culture and seek their roots. Since that time, adoptive families think of Lotus Travel first when it comes to safe and hassle-free adoption travel as well as birth country visits. As I continue to work with families, many of them for more than one trip, it continues to be real joy to be a part of this community.  In recent years, I have been able to lead some birth country reunion tours; some of these families worked with me more than ten years ago during  their adoption trip. It is a special honor for “Uncle Louie” to travel with them and it is a reunion for me as well, that after many years we meet again on the soil of their children’s motherland.  As I gave my farewell toast before the trip ended I said, 'I have been serving the adoption community  since I first arrived in the US on June 24, 1994.  I love my job which is rewarding and I am very passionate about it because of you – my heroes.”

By bus [ edit ]

The central bus station of Perm is on Shosse Kosmonavtov opposite the central market. There are daily buses to/from Ekaterinburg , Kazan , Izhevsk , Chelyabinsk , and many cities in Perm Krai .

By car [ edit ]

Although Perm lies on the "Siberian Trakt", the main motorway from Moscow to Siberia, the local roads are of poor quality, similar to most of Russia.

By boat [ edit ]

Perm is accessible through its Kama river port. Passenger transportation is limited to recreational cruises to Chaikovsky, Kazan , Moscow , St. Petersburg and Volgograd . Cruise companies tend to sell return tickets only.

Buy [ edit ]

With the city quickly developing, new shopping malls appear everywhere. Definitely worth seeing is the always crowded Central Bazaar, with uncountable kiosks and market stands, as well as huge market halls. The bazaar is located opposite the central bus station, at the very beginning of Kosmonavtov avenue. Perm also has a Chinese market, with mostly clothing being sold.

• Iceberg , Popova street, 16 . 10:00-21:00 . 60 stores with clothing, electronics and a beauty salon.

There is plenty of Russian, Georgian, Azeri, and Uzbek food in Perm.

Reckless drivers are probably the biggest safety threat. Pickpocketing is common in the crowded public transport and in the Central and Chinese Bazars. Occasional drunkards may be somewhat annoying but rarely pose any menace. It is wise to stay out of city parks, Balatovo Park, during the night.

Cope [ edit ]

Be prepared for cold weather from November to March. Despite cold temperatures outside, nearly all indoor spaces and public transportation are well heated.

Nicht weit vom Flughafen und der Hauptstadt Colombo beginnt das Urlaubsparadies. An der Südküste können Sie die berühmten Stelzenfischer bei Ihrer Arbeit zusehen. Sie stehen  im Wasser auf aufgestelten Stelzen und jagen Markrelen.

Auch für Surfer ist Sri Lanka eine Reise wert, es gibt das ganze Jahr über Wellen. In unserer Winterzeit, surft es sich am besten an der Westküste.

Grüne Berglandschaften, duftende Teeplantagen und religiöse Tempel - so besticht das Inland Sri Lankas. Das Hochland mit Orten wie  Nuwara Eliya - der Stadt des Lichts und des Tees, Kandy mit seinem berühmten Zahntempel und Ella sind sehr sehenswert. 

Besonders schön ist eine Reise mit dem von Kandy nach Ella - so lernt man Land und Leute am besten kennen. In sechs Stunden tuckert man gemütlichen an kleinen Dörfern, Teeplantagen , Reisfeldern und wunderschönen Ausblicken vorbei.

Der Besuch einer Teeplantage mit Infos zu Anbau, Verarbeitung und Verkostung sowie ein leckeres Curry gehören dazu. 

Unvergessliche Tiererlebnisse lassen sich in den 14 Nationalparks Sri Lanks erleben. Vom Yala Nationalpark im Südosten bis zum Wilpattu Nationalpark im Nordwesten - hier lässt sich die Natur noch genießen. Begeben Sie sich auf die Pirsch und entdecken Sie mit etwas Glück asiatische Elefanten, scheue Leoparden, seltende Lippenbären und fast unsichtbare Sumpfkrokodile.

In Sri Lankas Nationalparks geht es bequem und sicher per Jeep oder Bootsafari. 

Eine der bekanntesten Sehenswürdigkeiten Sri Lankas ist der Löwenfelsen von Sigirya (UNESCO Weltkulturerbe). Von den ehemals 500 Fresken der Wolkenmädchen kann man heute noch 22 sehen, dank einer Restaurierung in den 1970er Jahren.  

Garantiert einen unvergesslichen Tag erleben Sie bei einer Jeepsafari im Yala-Nationalpark. Der ca. 1.500 qm große Nationalpark weist eine große Artenvielfalt auf mit z.B. Elefanten, Leoparden, Affen, Wasserbüffeln und zahlreichen Vogelarten.

Die koloniale Hafenstadt im Süden Sri Lankas hat eine sehr sehenswerte Altstadt mit kleinen Gassen und Kolonialbauten. Die bekanntesten Bauwerke der Stadt sind das Galle Fort mit Uhrenturm und der Leuchtturm. 

Die Anlage besteht aus ca. 80 Felsentempeln, die 153 Buddhastatuen und eindrucksvolle Malereien beherbergen. Die Felsentempel wurden zur UNESCO Weltkulturerbestätte ernannt.

Nuwara Eliya, im Hochland auf 1.900 m gelegen, wird auch die „Stadt des Lichts und der Teeplantagen“ genannt. In der Kolonialzeit war Nuwara Eliya dank der kühleren Temperaturen ein beliebter Erholungsort. 

Die Königsstadt liegt an einem See und ist bekannt für den Tempel des heiligen Zahns. Unvergessliche Momente erleben Sie bei einer Tempelzeremonie oder einer Aufführung der berühmten Kandy-Tänzer. Von Kandy aus empfiehlt sich ein Ausflug zum botanischen Garten von Peradeniya.

Einen der schönsten Traumstrände Sri Lankas finden Sie im Südosten des Landes. Der Ort ist ein berühmter Surfer-Hotspot dank optimaler Surfbedingungen in einer traumhaften Kulisse.

Der größte Nationalpark Sri Lankas wurde während des Bürgerkrieges als Unterschlupf von den Rebellen genutzt. Heute befinden sich im Nationalpark zahlreiche Elefanten, Affen, Bären und die größte Leopardenpopulation Sri Lankas. 

Die ehemalige Hauptstadt Sri Lankas (UNESCO Weltkulturerbe) ist eine bedeutende Pilgerstätte für Buddhisten, da sich ein Ableger des Baumes, unter dem Buddha erleuchtet wurde, in Anuradhapura befindet.

Die beliebtesten Reisethemen für Sri Lanka

Die Unterkunftsmöglichkeiten sind in Sri Lanka je nach Reisebudget sehr unterschiedlich. Sie haben die Wahl von einfachen Hotels oder Homestays bis zu luxuriösen 5-Sterne Resorts . An den Küsten Sri Lankas gibt es zahlreiche Strandresorts in verschiedenen Kategorien. In Bentota können Sie z.B. im Vivanta by Taj Bentota einen Strandurlaub in einer großzügigen Anlage mit Poollandschaft und luxuriös eingerichteten Zimmern für höchste Ansprüche erleben. Das Palm Paradise Cabanas hingegen ist bei Naturfreunden sehr beliebt, die die weitläufige Anlage direkt am Strand mit einfach ausgestatteten Holzbungalows zwischen Palmen schätzen. Die meisten Hotels in Sri Lanka sind aufgrund der tropischen Temperaturen mit Klimaanlagen ausgestattet, im Hochland haben einige Hotels keine Klimaanlagen, da das Klima deutlich kühler ist. Ein besonderes Erlebnis ist die Übernachtung in einem Nationalpark, z.B. im Yala Nationalpark. Mit etwas Glück können Sie bereits beim Frühstück oder von Ihrem Zimmer aus Tiere beobachten.  

• Impfungen:  Für Urlauber, die direkt aus Deutschland einreisen, sind keine Pflichtimpfungen vorgeschrieben. Wenn Sie in den letzten 9 Tagen vor Einreise nach Sri Lanka in einem Gelbfiebergebiet waren, müssen Sie eine Gelbfieberimpfung nachweisen. Die Standardimpfungen gemäß Impfkalender des Robert-Koch-Instituts sollten, wenn notwendig, aufgefrischt werden. Das Auswärtige Amt empfiehlt als Reiseimpfungen Hepatitis A, bei Langzeitaufenthalten auch Hepatitis B, Typhus, Tollwut und Japanische Enzephalitis. 
• Reiseapotheke:  Es ist empfehlenswert, eine Reiseapotheke mit folgendem Inhalt mitzuführen: Schmerzmittel, Desinfektionsspray, Mückenspray, Tabletten gegen Durchfall, Reisetabletten gegen Übelkeit, Pflaster, Verbandszeug, Elektrolytpräparate bei Flüssigkeitsverlust durch Durchfall oder Schwitzen und alle persönlichen Medikamente die regelmäßig eingenommen werden. 

• Anreise:  Die Anreise nach Sri Lanka erfolgt normalerweise per Flugzeug zum Flughafen Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), 30 km nördlich von der Hauptstadt Colombo gelegen. Ab Deutschland gibt es zurzeit keine Direktflüge. Flugverbindungen nach Sri Lanka werden ab allen großen deutschen Flughäfen z.B. mit 1x umsteigen in Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Muscat oder Istanbul angeboten. Die Flugzeit der Umsteigeverbindung beträgt ca. 12-14 Stunden. Ab Zürich gibt es einen Direktflug nach Sri Lanka, die Flugzeit beträgt ca. 10 Stunden.
• Einreisebestimmungen : Deutsche Staatsbürger benötigen bei Einreise nach Sri Lanka ein Visum, das entweder vor der Reise online beantragt werden kann oder als „Visa on arrival“ bei Ankunft am Flughafen Colombo. Seit August 2019 ist die Visabeantragung in beiden Fällen kostenlos, allerdings gilt diese Regelung vorerst nur für 6 Monate (Stand Dezember 2019). Das Touristenvisum hat eine Gültigkeit von maximal 28 Aufenthaltstagen. Die Einreise ist für deutsche Staatsbürger mit einem Reisepass, vorläufigen Reisepass und Kinderreisepass möglich. Die Reisedokumente müssen bei Einreise noch mindestens 6 Monate gültig sein. 

• Reisezeit: Sri Lanka ist ein Ganzjahresziel, da der Südwestmonsun (Yala) und der Nordostmonsun (Maha) zeitlich versetzt sind. Für Urlaub an der Südwestküste ist von Oktober bis März die beste Reisezeit und für Urlaub an der Nordostküste ist die beste Reisezeit von März bis September. Wenn Sie eine Reise in verschiedene Gebiete des Landes planen, sind die Übergangszeiten gut geeignet. 
• Reisedauer: Für eine Rundreise sollten Sie je nach Reiseroute mindestens 1 Woche Zeit einplanen. Aufgrund der langen Anreise ist es empfehlenswert, noch etwas länger in Sri Lanka zu bleiben und sich z.B. noch eine weitere Woche in einem schönen Strandresort zu erholen oder Zwischenübernachtungen bei der Rundreise einzuplanen, um die Orte noch intensiver erkunden zu können. Bei einer Ayurvedakur empfehlen wir eine Aufenthaltsdauer von mindestens 2 Wochen.
• Zeitverschiebung:  Die Zeitverschiebung beträgt zur MEZ +4,5 Stunden und während der Sommerzeit +3,5 Stunden. 

• Events:  Das hinduistische Lichterfest Diwali findet Ende Oktober oder Anfang November landesweit statt, das genaue Datum richtet sich nach dem Mondkalender. Die Feierlichkeiten dauern 5 Tage und lassen Sri Lanka strahlen dank zahlreicher Lichterketten, Laternen und Öllampen. Am dritten Tag des Lichterfests finden Feuerwerke statt, um die bösen Geister zu vertreiben. Das wohl spektakulärste Fest – das Esala Perahera-Fest (= Fest des heiligen Zahns Buddhas) in Kandy findet jedes Jahr im Juli oder August zum Esala-Vollmond statt. Freuen Sie sich auf prunkvoll mit Lichterketten geschmückte Elefanten, zahlreiche Kandy-Tänzer und Akrobaten sowie Feuerschlucker und Trommler, die vom Tempel des heiligen Zahns aus durch die Stadt ziehen. Jeden Monat feiern die Buddhisten in Sri Lanka an Vollmond das Poya Fest. In den buddhistischen Tempeln, die zu diesem Anlass aufwändig geschmückt werden, finden sich zahlreiche Opfergaben in Form von Blumen, Räucherstäbchen und Essen. Im Februar und Mai finden zusätzlich eindrucksvolle Festumzüge statt

Die Kosten der Reise sind hauptsächlich von den gewünschten Unterkünften und der Reisezeit abhängig. Eine zweiwöchige Reise mit Flug ist ab ca. 1.500 Euro buchbar. Günstige Reiseschnäppchen gibt es meist während der Regenzeit in den Sommermonaten. 

Die Hotels sind normalerweise mit Moskitonetzen ausgestattet. Wenn Sie in Ihrem Zimmer kein Moskitonetz vorfinden, können Sie an der Rezeption nachfragen. Es ist empfehlenswert, Mückenschutzspray zu benutzen und eher helle Kleidung zu tragen.

7 Must-See Attractions in Perm

When you hear “Perm”, you probably think of an embarrassing hairstyle from the 80s. It might come as a surprise then that Perm is also the last city on the European side of the Ural mountains, and a place very much worth visiting. When you find yourself there, here are the attractions you absolutely cannot miss.

1. permyak salty ears.

This is the main symbolic landmark of the city. It is a sculpture consisting of an oval frame with big ears and a figure of a photographer taking a picture of it. The region is rich in minerals and in the past it was a very important salt mining location. The workers of salt mines would carry big bags full of salt on their backs. The salt would spill on their ears, making them big and red. Salt mining became so interwoven with the identity of the region that all of its inhabitants started being called Permyak’s Salty Ears. Now everyone can become one in one of the central squares of the city.

One of the culture ministers of Permsky Krai once called it a cultural capital of the universe. While it might be a little bit too exaggerated of a statement, Perm is indeed a place of unexpected cultural gems. PERMM Museum of Contemporary art is one of them. It holds temporary exhibitions and also hosts festivals, lectures, workshops and performances. It is the only contemporary art gallery of this kind outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Perm: Europe's easternmost city

The city of Perm, located in the Urals foothills, is, geographically speaking, the most easterly city in Europe. Yekaterinburg, which is situated further to the east, beyond the Urals ridge, is located in Asia. Yet, while the whole world thinks that Europe ends at Perm, its citizens are convinced that it begins there.

Perm owes its birth to the mountains that separate Europe from Asia. One of the first copper-smelting works in the Urals was built there in the early 18 th century. As production developed, the settlement grew and Empress Catherine II (the great) soon signed a decree creating the city of Perm around the plant. For centuries, the city developed as an industrial center, so it is not surprising that the working people in Perm welcomed the October Revolution of 1917. In 1940, the city was renamed Molotov, but not for long, as its former name was restored in the late 1950s. Today Perm is a leader of Russian heavy industry.

In recent years, however, the city has been striving to rid itself of its image as Russia’s industrial capital and be recognized as a cultural capital. Can a mighty industrial city, studded with factories, turn overnight into a capital of fashion shows, music and modern arts? The local people are confident that they can do it; the local museum features ancient local artifacts such as wooden idols and bronze animal medallions alongside modern art. Artists and musicians come to Perm to lecture and give master classes and, once every two years, the city hosts the Diaghilev Seasons, a classical festival in memory of the famous ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev. This is not accidental – the guiding spirit of the famous Russian Seasons in Paris lived in Perm with his family for a long time and graduated from the local school. This year, the city had its first ever White Nights multicultural festival, which lasted a whole month. The authorities hoped the festival would attract hundreds of thousands of tourists but in reality there were fewer. This was partly due to poor promotion of the festival events and partly to the lack of a convenient tourist infrastructure, including information centers, cheap hotels, bicycle rentals and even toilets.

Even so, Perm is persevering. Like other major Russian cities, last June Perm opened a pedestrian street, its answer to Moscow’s Arbat. At present, it looks somewhat wild and provincial: a patchy asphalt surface, street vendors with nothing to do, a couple of artisans and a children’s playground. Yet the pedestrian street is already included in the standard sightseeing tour that winds around the center. The tour, called The Green Line, links key historical sights of old Perm such as merchants’ houses, churches and monuments. Not surprisingly, it also includes museums, such as the Perm Museum of Local Lore housed in a sumptuous villa that used to belong to the arts patron Nikolai Meshkov. This imposing building, with its columns and stucco moldings, overlooks the Kama River. Its storerooms and exhibition halls contain all the treasures of the city’s many centuries of history. A little back from the riverbank, the Museum of Perm Antiquities features a vast paleontology collection: skeletons of the ancient lizards that gave their name to one of the Palaeozoic periods and the legendary Perm mammoth. An alternative tourist route, called The Red Line, was inaugurated more recently. The places of the greatest romantic dramas played out in the city are marked in red on the city map.

Works of art and stone monuments are not the city’s only attractions. Because of its unusual history and geographical position, Perm has produced many remarkable personalities, some of whom became legends in their own lifetime.

Take Alexei Bessonov, a well-known local communist, an active blogger and an irrepressible public campaigner. He jogs in the morning and, thanks to his robust health, is ever ready to fight for the ideals of the Communist Party. He has come up with some startling initiatives. For example, he proposed turning the city hall into a pretrial detention centre and he tried to organize guerilla units to oppose the cultural reforms. Bessonov’s activities are hailed by the local media, and he has long been a living legend in the city. You can see him all over the place: In the morning he often jogs through the city’s main streets and, at noon, he can be seen leading a demonstration and carrying a banner in front of government buildings. Another local celebrity is Alexander Zhunev, a street artist who holds degrees in economics and geology. When he painted his first graffiti in 2008, he realized this was what he had been born to do. Now people come from afar to look at his works. If you see a portrait of the poet Sergei Yesenin that is as tall as 10-storey building, or Spongebob Squarepants atop an electrical transformer box, or public phones in the shape of a fish or a cat’s head, you can be sure Alexander Zhunev has been here with his spray paint. And it is a good idea to visit the places that he has visited.

In contrast, Mikhail Shmakov has disliked Perm from the time he was a child. He thought the city was drab and gloomy. To escape the drabness, Shmakov and his wife set out on a voyage around the world. They have already crossed Africa and South America. Having seen half the world, Shmakov now admits that he does not want to leave his home city for good.

“Paradoxically, after visiting thousands of cities, it was brought home to me that I was lucky to have been born in Perm,” Shmakov said. “I have hated Perm all my life but have recently come to like its cozy provincial style and atmosphere of a wilderness.”

The “wilderness” surrounds the city in the shape of thick forests and the deep, dark waters of the Kama, a major river that slashes right through the middle of Perm. Today, though, the city is divided not only by water. One part dreams of turning it into a cultural capital and the other part wants it to be an industrial city, as of old. How to keep both camps happy? Perm is in the midst of stormy processes that will certainly be interesting to watch.
