Unspoilt Greek Island worth visiting - Skopelos

“Unspoilt Greek Island worth visiting” Review of Skopelos

Boats in Skopelos harbour

As a first time visitor to the Greek islands we decided on Skopelos as we were advised it was quieter than its neighbour, Skiathos. We were not disappointed. Skopelos is the largest of the three inhabited islands of the Sporades to the east of mainland Greece, but it is not densely populated. There a two towns; Skopelos the capital, and Glossa to the north. Both are very picturesque with small winding streets and whitewashed houses. Glossa is much smaller than Skopelos, set high in the hills above the little port of Loutraki, it has commanding views of the bay. Skopelos Town is larger and sprawls into the valley behind. The old harbour is bustling with tavernas, cafes and bars. Souvenir shops are dotted around the tiny winding streets, that work their way up into the hillside. There are also a few restaurants higher in the town if you want to work up an appetite. Down in the harbour, you can book a boat trip out to the neighbouring island of Alonnissos, which is even quieter than Skopelos if you really want to get away from it all! The island is covered in pine trees, the sweet scent of which wafts around you as you drive around the island. The trees give the island a feeling of unspoilt beauty. The roads are narrow, they wind their way in and out of the hills mostly hugging the coastline. Every bend you come to gives you another amazing view of this beautiful island. Some of the smaller roads are very hard to negotiate, steep and poorly maintained. I was happy to leave the driving to my husband, who enjoyed the challenge! I’m glad it did not stop us from exploring. We purchased a well detailed map on arrival which really helped. Wasps are a real problem if you visit in September. You won’t find a mention of this in the holiday brochures. The locals burn Greek coffee and set traps of raw fish and honey which helps to keep them at bay. We rented a remote villa in the hills above Skopelos which had the most amazing views. Unfortunately this was spoilt somewhat by the persistent wasps that constantly buzz around you when you venture outside. Thankfully they buzz off at night so you can sit and enjoy the twinkling views of the town and harbour and if you look upwards, the Milky Way! Lots of the beaches are hard to get to unless you visit by boat. But there are still plenty to choose from if you hire a car. The beaches are quiet in September, we never had a problem getting a sunbed and umbrella. Not all of the beaches have any facilities. You turn up with a picnic and that’s it! Our favourite beach was Limonari. The shingle is very fine, almost sandy. There are two tavernas where we enjoyed the best food. Simple Greek salads, fresh caught fish from the bay. Cold beer and local wine. Other beaches to recommend. Panormos; a little busier but more choice of tavernas. One of the biggest beaches on the island. Agnondas: pretty little harbour and small beach with tavernas. Ferries sometimes dock here if the sea is choppy. Likes: Beautiful unspoilt scenery, simple food, crystal clear waters, peaceful. Dislikes: Wasps were a real nuisance, off the beaten track unnerving at times.

madro travel skopelos greece

We have just returned from a wonderful trip to Skopelos, Greece aka "The Mama Mia Island"(This is where they filmed) We stayed in Staphylos which is perfect if you want to be out of the main town and you have a car. We stayed at Villa's Christina in a beautiful new and spotlessly clean apartment. The owner's Mina and Kostas are very kind and hospitable. There are beautiful gardens and you are surrounded by glorious views of mountains. There is a bakery/supermarket within walking distance named Ambrosia, funny enough we found their sister cafe named also Ambrosia which serves the most delicous loukamathes(little puffy donuts topped with honey and cinnamon) they are located on the main promenade in Skopelos town. Michalis is the owner's son and was our waiter he is full of personality do not even try any others these are the best. Most of the beaches are located on the western coast. You will find them to be with small pebbles with the exception of Limnonari. It has a taverna and umbrellas. We found all of the beaches to be clean and most have umbrellas. When we were there we found the mornings to be a little windy and the afternoons to be calm. The only drawback were the bees just make sure you ask the restaurant to burn some coffee grounds at your table and they will stay away. The upside to the bees is that they have amazing honey!

madro travel skopelos greece

Skopelos is beautiful, laid-back and my favourite greek island so far! It will be the place were we get married (on Agnondas beach) and it is all I imagined it to be. Our 1 week in Skopelos was almost perfect - (we got lost in our jeep looking for the Sandoukia graves and it was scary!). Skopelos has a very laid back atmoshpere and the people there are lovely and all speak english. The weather was gorgeous and the 3 times it rained were at night and first thing in the morning so didnt bother us - clouds disapeared and it was hot again by 10.am! The beaches are all very different and all have their own charm. Some of my favourites are Agnondas - Gorgeous setting, pebbley small cove with fishing boats and jetties make it so pretty, 4 tavernas there, 2 shops, clear calm waters and swings for kids so everything you need, it is quite a lively atmosphere too aswell as being chilled - if you know what i mean! Limnonari - lovely beach for swimming, clear, calm waters, loungers to hire, 2 tavernas and pretty views- so great for everyone. kastani - Beautiful! No loungers, and that awful gritty sand, no taverna - but the stunning views against the rocks at one side, backdrop of greenery and lovely clear waters makes up for the negatives! You can swim round to Milia beach too which was also a nice beach. Skopelos Town itself is more lively than i would have imagined - lots of shops (although many expensive), lovely restaurants and bars, lots of little streets - you can't get bored. Glossa was really quiet and laid-back, the views were lovely but i was a bit dissapointed as there was really not much going on as in shops and tavernas, but you have to go to Agnanti restaurant as the food, service and stunning views are all firstclass. I would recommend Skopelos to all my freinds as i cannot think of anyone that woudlnt like it - it's a gem of an island! Please keep it that way Skopelos!!

madro travel skopelos greece

Skopelos is nothing short of amazing...beautiful landscape, kind people, great food, it's relaxing, sereneand tranquil. Even though the island photographed beautifully in Mamma Mia The Movie, nothing compares to visiting it in person. From the minute you step off the ferry in Skopelos Town, you are transcended to another time. It is quaint, but yet has all the latest amenities, free wi-fi, internet cafe, banks, travel agencies, car rental agencies. We are especially glad that we rented a four wheel drive vehicle while on the island. There is so much to explore off the beaten path. We rented the Mirabilis House from Madro Travel and loved that experience. It is only a short walk from the waterfront with all the shopping and eating you could ever need. It is a three story home with a rooftop patio. The view from up there was limitless. There is no shortage of fine dining, and you also have the option of stopping into one of the many bakeries and purchasing either a hot or cold sandwich, and then of course, a nice pastry and coffee to go with it! You won't be disappointed in Skopelos, with it's towering cliffs, pine studded forests and tranquil, turquoise waters. It would take a week just to visit all of the beautiful beaches, but for just lying around with convenient tavernas, Panormas Beach cannot be beat.

madro travel skopelos greece

We stayed for a week on just outside Skopolos town in September and sorry to say I was disappointed. The beaches consist of pebbles and we had problems finding decent taverna's to eat in.There are plenty of cafe's on the water front but they weren't anything special. There was a lovely restaurant in Glossa but compared to Kefalonia and other greek islands I have been to this wasn't the best. Glad we only had booked a week there.

Best Things to Do in Skopelos Greece | Mamma Mia Island

Skopelos Greece is one of the most beautiful, unspoiled, and green Greek islands, located in the Sporades archipelago, north of Athens. West of Skopelos lies cosmopolitan Skiathos Island and Pelion Peninsula, the two other filming locations of the famous Mamma Mia in Greece.

Skopelos Greece is ideal to spend peaceful, laid-back vacations on an island characterized by stunning secluded turquoise, azure, and bright blue beaches surrounded by deep pine forests. The island is perfect for families as it has excellent facilities and the beaches are mostly easy to get to.

Skopelos Greece Chora with houses with tiled roofs and birght blue sky

While Skiathos is more touristically advanced, attracting more adventurous, beach-bar-party visitors, Skopelos Greece is more for the romantics. With gorgeous nature, small fishing villages, and idyllic emerald water the island is a perfect place for families, and couples alike.

And if you are wondering what to do on the island, I assure you there’s no shortage of things to do in Skopelos Greece. The island is the outdoor lover paradise for hiking, diving, snorkeling, and of course, swimming in clear waters.

Meryl Streep in Skopelos filming Mamma Mia

The sleepy island of Skopelos became suddenly famous when in 2007 they filmed the famous movie Mamma Mia I. Ever since Skopelos has been known as “The Mamma Mia Island” and is considered the sole location of the film.

However, the film is the result of a genius-crafted video editing of locations including Skopelos and Skiathos islands, Damouchari village in the nearby Pelion peninsula, and Pinewood Studios in the UK.

Agios Ioannis Kastri, main Mamma Mia location with yachts

I have listed below the main shooting locations of Mamma Mia for you to visit when you are next to Skopelos Greece. And If you are a fan of the film, you can take a guided Skopelos Mamma Mia tour  to spend a day visiting all the film locations, with time for swimming!

The church of Agios Ioannis Kastri – The Wedding Scene

Impressive Agios Ioannis Kastri Church from a drone

30 km north of Skopelos Chora you will find the most impressive and beautiful landmark of Skopelos Greece, the lovely chapel of Agios Ioannis Kastri.

Agios Ioannis (St. John the Baptist) stands on top of a rock where you can admire an amazing view of the coasts of Skopelos to Alonissos island.

The impressive rock is linked to the rest of the island through a narrow path with 110 steps carved into the stone but with steady handrails to support you. The interior of the church has beautiful icons and old ecclesiastical items to see.

madro travel skopelos greece

The old stories about how Agios Ioannis Kastri was built, mention a fisherman from Glossa village, who while he was returning from fishing one night, saw a light on the top of the rock.

The same night he dreamt about a woman revealing to him that there was an icon on the top of the rock that he needed to retrieve. When he finally climbed to the top he discovered the image of St. John the Baptist and a church dedicated to the saint was built.

Sandy Agios Ioannis beach with beds and umbrellas, Skopelos Greece

A small but gorgeous sandy beach is formed right beneath the rock, a very popular spot during the high season. If you climb to the church during summer, take some water with you, a hat, and some sunscreen. The entrance is free, and modest dressing is advised.

Glysteri Beach

Mamma Mia Greece Locations, Glysteri beach, Skopelos Greece

Glysteri is an organized beach, inside a small protected bay, quite close to Skopelos Chora. It has small pebbles and the water is crystal clear, inviting you to jump into the sea as soon as you arrive at the beach.

In Mamma Mia film, this is where the arched stone entrance to Villa Donna was. Neither the entrance nor the villa exists on Skopelos as they were entirely filmed at Pinewood Studios in the UK. The magnificent sea view, however, is of Glysteri Beach!

Kastani Beach

sandy Kastani beach of Skopelos Greece

Kastani is a very beautiful sandy beach and appears quite a few times in the Mamma Mia film. The most characteristic scene is when Sophie with her fiancé Sky romps in the surf while singing ‘Lay All Your Love On Me’.

Greece in May, Kastani Beach Skopelos Mamma Mia

Kastani is located 15 km west of Skopelos Chora with easy asphalt access. The last 500 meters to the beach are on a dirt road, very easy to drive. There is parking for your car, a beach bar and you can rent beds and umbrellas to spend a full Mamma Mia Island beach day here!

Amarandos Cove

Amarandos Cove with 3 pine trees in Skopelos Greece

Amarandos is a stunning rocky cove laden with pine trees hanging over the sparkling blue water. This is where Sophie and her 3 dads sing together ‘Our last summer’.

There was a wildfire in the area in 2018 but the symbol of Amarandos, the three pines in the tiny peninsula, has miraculously survived!

Stay in Mamma Mia Film Crew Hotel

Mamma Mia Greece Locations, Skopelos seafront hotel

You can stay at Adrina Beach Hotel , a lovely 4-star hotel close to Panormos with its small beach, where the Mamma Mia 2 cast stayed to shoot the promotional videos. Or the nearby Adrina Resort & Spa , a gorgeous 5-star resort of the same family. Unfortunately, Mamma Mia 2 wasn’t filmed in Greece.

Stroll Skopelos Chora

Skopelos Greece main town with houses with tiled roofs

Skopelos Chora (the main town) is built amphitheatrically on a hill and is a beautiful picturesque town with small cobblestone alleys. It has been declared a protected traditional settlement, in a Venetian-like architecture, with balconies and terracotta roof tiles and it is mostly car-free.

Panagitsa of Pyrgos in Skopelos Greece

The port has numerous choices for coffee and taverns and this is the area where everybody will pass by at least once a day. At the end of the port, after you have climbed some steps, there is a lovely white church of Panagitsa of Pyrgos (Virgin Mary of the Tower). If you get in its yard, the view of the whole port of Skopelos is amazing.

Anatoli tavern in Skopelos Greece Castle

There are also the remains of a Venetian castle that you can hike (which can be quite demanding during summer heat) or you can drive up to a certain point. When you get to the top you will find Anatoli , a fantastic tavern where during summer you can enjoy live Greek traditional music (Rebetiko).

For a great introduction to Skopelos,  book this highlight tour with wine tasting and dinner!

Skopelos Greece Chora colorful alleys

Do not miss the Festival of Traditional Dances : For the 8th consecutive year, the traditional dance festival “Diamantis Palaeologos ” takes place in Skopelos Town usually in July.

Tips for Skopelos Chora:

  • There’s a large, free car park on the port front for your rental car .
  • Visit Vakratsa Museum to see up close a middle-class Skopelos house of the 19th century. Open Mon-Friday, 10.00 – 13.00, entrance €2.
  • Discover the pie shop of Michalis and taste both their cheese and their creamy pies! You can thank me later 😀
  • Take the boat from Skopelos Chora port to the Marine Park of Alonissos , the largest seal Monachus Monachus protection area in Europe.
  • Book a Private Cruise with a Speed Boat   around Skopelos Island.

Where to Stay in Chora Skopelos

Thimisi Hotel terrace views of the sea in Skopelos Greece

Skopelos town is the most practical place to stay as this is the most central place on the island. However, the nearby beaches are not the best on Skopelos. Book in town if you are staying for a short time in Skopelos Greece:

4-star Thimisi Hotel is a charming boutique hotel, with fine decorations and excellent lovely views of the sea and the port from the terrace.

Irene’s Paradise is within walking distance of the town with lovely sea views and beautifully decorated rooms.

Dive to the Best Beaches in Skopelos

Skopelos is blessed with numerous gorgeous beaches, some of them organized with beach bars and lifeguards in the high season some more remote and not organized. All of them are with wonderful crystal clear waters surrounded by trees.

Milia beach

Milia Beach with turquoise waters in Skopelos Greece

Sandy, organized Milia is one of the most beautiful beaches in Skopelos Greece. It is also one of the largest, and most popular beaches on the island, ideal for families.

It is located 14 km southwest of Skopelos Chora, and right across from the Dassia islet which you can visit by boat. Some impressive rock formations on the beach split the beach in half and offer a great snorkeling field if you love exploring the sea.

Panormos Bay

Panormos pebbly beach Skopelos Greece

1 km south of Milia is the gorgeous Panormos beach with pebbles and waters that deepen quickly, so if you have small kids, keep that in mind. Panormos is a protected bay, surrounded by pine trees, with taverns and restaurants to go after your swimming.

Panormos is a great place to be based for your vacations in Skopelos and a great option there is Skopelos Sunset traditional country house .

Agnontas beach with fishing boats and taverns surrounded by forest in Skopelos Greece

Agnontas Beach is where you come to have the freshest fish on Skopelos. The area is named after the Ancient Olympic Games winner Agnontas, as an honor to their athlete who won in 596 BC in Olympia.

At its picturesque and sheltered bay, you will enjoy freshly caught seafood while admiring one of the best sunsets on the island. It has very easy access by road as it is only 8 km from Skopelos Chora.

A fab accommodation to stay in is Agnontas Luxury Villas !

madro travel skopelos greece

Stafylos is another popular, sandy, and organized beach, 4 km south of Skopelos Chora. It is a protected green bay with a beach bar and lifeguard. It might be slightly tricky for some to get to the beach if you arrive there by bus as you have to walk a 500-meter downhill. In walking distance is the island nudist beach, Velanio.

Hike to Sentoukia

Sentoukia tombs in Skopelos Greece

If you love hiking to archaeological sites, Sentoukia is ideal for you!

You will need to drive to Karya mountain (660 meters peak), a lush pine forest 10 km northeast of Skopelos Chora to get to the start of the trail to Sentoukia.

The path starts inside the forest and is gently uphill, on an easy-to-follow trail. As you get higher the trees give way to bushes and as the slope faces the eastern part of Skopelos, you will be amazed if you get there for the sunrise. The higher you go the more you see of Alonissos island and you finally get to the Sentoukia or more precisely to the tombs !

There are four ancient tombs of the Roman or early Christian period carved inside the rocks. Three of the tombs are complete with 2.5 m covers of monolithic slabs and were found inverted. Sentoukia is a great place if you love endless sea vistas!

Discover the Skopelos Settlements

Neo Klima village with fishing boats in Skopelos Greece

Neo Klima is a lovely little village, recently founded, with a marina for fishing boats and yachts, with a specialty in fish soup, and lobster spaghetti in its taverns.

Hovolos turquoise beach.

Near Neo Klima is the fabulous Hovolos beach. To get to Hovolos you need to spot a large monolith, walk towards it – beware of any rock falling – and discover the beautiful hidden beach. It is an unorganized, quiet beach with very small pebbles and azure, crystal-clear waters.

Loutraki village.

The second port of Skopelos is officially called Glossa although if you see the map, Glossa is the village on the slopes of the mountain and the port village is called Loutraki. The confusing names have happened because years ago when Skopelos was far from a tourist destination, the tiny port was there just for Glossa village.

Tip: You may find interesting a visit to Antoniou Olive Oil Museum near Glossa.

Whitewashed houses in Glossa village.

Loutraki today is a beautiful village with a great choice of taverns and accommodations. Nearby you can also find two lovely beaches with pebbles, one of them with a few ruins from the archaeological site of ancient Selinous.

Would you like to stay in Loutraki? Check out the exceptional Aegean Wave – Faros Hotel

Visit Skopelos’ Byzantine Monasteries

Monastery surrounded by deep forest in Greece.

If you love religious art, Skopelos is your island as it has about 400 churches and 20 monasteries! Palouki Mountain, with a peak at 546 meters in the southeast of Skopelos, houses a string of 7 monasteries. This is also an ideal place for hiking and exploring the beautiful nature of the island.

Agia Varvara Monastery

Agia Varvara is the oldest Monastery on the island built in 1648, a large Basilica temple with a dome. The inside of the church is richly decorated with golden flowers and vine leaves and the outside is protected by high walls that protected it from any raids during the last centuries.

Other monasteries you can visit in the same area:

  • Evagelistria, Iera Moni Sotiros of the 16th century, Timios Prodromos, Agioi Taxiarches, Agia Anna, and Pano Panagia.
  • The monasteries accept visitors from 8.00-13.00 and 17.00-19:00.
  • There’s no entry charge but donations are appreciated. Alternatively, you can buy items in their shop.
  • Monastery dress code: women should wear long skirts (below their knees) and have their shoulders covered. Men should wear long trousers and have their shoulders covered.

Taste Skopelos Local Delicacies

Things to Do on Zakynthos Island, cheesepie.

Skopelos is famous for its sweets and pies so do not miss tasting:

  • walnut pie with ice cream
  • hamalia  (almond-based confectionery)
  • rozedes  (walnut sweets) and  avgato  (a plum preserve)
  • all kinds of cheese and vegetable phyllo pies

Go to Skiathos Island

Skiathos Greece turqoise Lalaria beach.

Skiathos is the most cosmopolitan island in the Sporades group, and the one closest to Pelion Mountain and Volos Port (1 hour by ferry). It is a very green island, ideal for nature and Greek culture lovers, and dancing till morning at  beach parties   and clubs that thrive on the island!

Skiathos Greece beautiful town with toled roofs.

Skiathos is another Mamma Mia island, a gorgeous, vibrant place that you should visit. The island is between 1 to 1,5 hours away from Skopelos, depending on the vessel you will get.

Where Best to Stay in Skiathos: La Luna Hotel, 90 m from golden sand Troulos Beach!

Wander Magnificent Pelion Greece

What to do in Pelion Greece, over view of Milina village.

Since you are in the same part of Greece, it would be such a shame not to visit my favorite area, my beloved Pelion Greece , and discover another Mamma Mia location, Damouchari .

What best to do in Pelion Greece, Milina charming port.

Pelion, Greece, is a large, forested peninsula. On its gentle slopes lie some of the most beautiful traditional villages, boasting centuries-old houses and monasteries. Surrounded by the Aegean Sea, Pelion also boasts stunning beaches like Mylopotamos, Fakistra, Agios Ioannis, and Papa Nero.

Best Hotel in Pelion: Archontiko Sakali in Pinakates.

Hotels Skopelos: Where Best to Stay

Skopelos village hotels.

As mentioned before, Skopelos Chora is the most convenient area to stay with my favorite hotels being:

  • Thimisi Hotel (Mid-range)
  • Kohili Villas (Luxury)
  • Irene’s Paradise (Budget)
  • Thea Home Hotel (Budget)

How long to Stay on Skopelos

To enjoy Skopelos, I suggest spending 4-5 days seeing a good chunk of its incredible beaches and spectacular scenery. If you are visiting from Skiathos or Alonissos , you can see a lot on a day trip but I would suggest you stay overnight, it is such a beautiful island and needs more than a day trip to enjoy it.

How to Get Around Skopelos

You can get around Skopelos by using public buses , but there may only be a few buses per day, especially outside the high season, and on Sundays, there is a possibility that there are no buses at all. The bus station in Skopelos town (Chora) is right by the port where the ferries arrive and timings are listed on a noticeboard.

Taxis: Taxis are available in Skopelos Chora, Loutraki Port, and Neo Klima. Your hotel receptionist can usually book one for you, or you can keep the phone numbers of a few local taxi companies on hand. If you are going to use taxis a lot, it would be best, cost-wise, if you rented a car .

Where is Skopelos Located?

Alonissos beach of Agios Dimitrios with emerald waters.

Skopelos is the second-largest island of Northern or Thessalian Sporades, a group of islands in the Aegean Sea located north of Evia island and east of Thessaly where Pelion also belongs. There are 19 islands and islets included in the group of Northern Sporades with only 6 of them inhabited:

Skyros, Skopelos, Alonissos, Skiathos , Kyra Panagia, and Peristera.

All these islands are characterized by beautiful beaches with lush vegetation that often reaches the shores, in contrast to most other islands of the Aegean Sea, like the Cyclades , which tend to be barren.

How to Get to Skopelos Greece

Athens to skopelos.

If you are in Athens, the most scenic (and longer way) to get to Skopelos is with a private rental car . You can take the ferry to Skopelos from Volos, Agios Konstantinos, or Evia Island.

Flights to Skopelos

Skopelos has no airport but you can fly to Skiathos Island or Volos town in Pelion and take the ferry to Skopelos.

Ferries to Skopelos

You can take the ferry to Skopelos ports (to Skopelos Chora and Glossa) from several nearby ports (not from Athens though):

  • Volos port (324 km from Athens)
  • Evia Island (Mandoudi port, 133 km from Athens)
  • Agios Konstantinos port (mainland, 167 km from Athens)
  • Skiathos island
  • Alonissos island

Some of the routes are working only during summer. Check out routes, and timetables and book your seats with FerryScanner for the best deals!

Best Time to Visit Skopelos

The smaller Greek islands like Skopelos tend to have a shorter season for visitors than larger islands (such as Rhodes , Crete , or Corfu ) or the mainland such as the Peloponnese .

Generally speaking, Skopelos is at its liveliest between May and September, and in peak season from July to August, it can get very busy. The sea water is at its warmest (25-28 C) in August and September.

What to Wear in Skopelos

This depends on the season you are visiting but anytime between May and October, essential things to have in Greece are:

  • comfortable walking shoes as Greece is mountainous and archaeological sites with their marble floors can be slippery
  • organic sunscreen to apply as often as possible
  • UPF sun hat for all day out
  • women’s Tunic Swimsuit Cover-Up for the strong Greek sun
  • a CUPSHE Bikini for impressive beach appearances
  • cotton beach towels
  • and a beautiful dress for romantic nights in Greece

When is Best to Go to Greece

Greece has 4 distinct seasons with considerable temperature differences if you are in Thessaloniki in the north or Crete in the south. The islands never close, they have permanent residents but they are at their liveliest between May and September .

Skopelos island is a wonderful island of the Sporades that stands out for its lush vegetation, its exotic beaches, and its picturesque villages. Villages like the main Town and Glossa boast a unique traditional architecture that makes them incredibly photogenic. At these locations, you’ll find a great selection of hotels, shops and traditional taverns where you can taste the local delicacies! Apart from the charming settlements, there are numerous beaches with crystal clear cobalt waters, such as Stafylos, Panormos and Elios. A drive along the island’s coastline, though, will get you to many secluded beaches as well.

Thanks to its proximity to other islands of the Sporades island group, it is a great base for island hopping . Popular island-hopping itineraries are from Skopelos to Skiathos and from Skopelos to Alonissos.

The most popular site on the island is hands down the church of Agios Ioannis in Kastri. That’s because the wedding scenes of Mamma Mia movie were shot there. These days, many tourists visit the church of Agios Ioannis to marvel at the romantic setting!

Getting There in Skopelos

Skopelos cannot be reached directly by plane, but you can fly to nearby Skiathos and take a hydrofoil or ferry to the northern port of Loutraki (below Glossa) or to the more popular Skopelos town.

If you're in Athens, take a boat or hydrofoil from Ayios Konstandinos to Skopelos (75 min.). Alkyon Travel, 97 Akademias, near Kanigos Square (tel. 210/383-2545 ), can arrange the 3-hour bus ride from Athens to Ayios Konstandinos (about 20€) and hydrofoil or ferry tickets.

Coming from Central or Northern Greece, depart for Skopelos from Volos (about a 2-hr. trip). For hydrofoil (Flying Dolphins) and ferryboat information, contact Hellenic Seaways, Akti Kondyli and 2 Aitolikou, Piraeus (tel. 210/419-9000; www.hellenicseaways.gr). For ferries from Piraeus, contact the G.A. Ferries line in Piraeus (tel. 210/458-2640; www.ferries.gr/gaferries). Ferry tickets can be purchased at travel agencies in Athens or on the islands. During high season, I recommend that you purchase your boat tickets in advance through the boat lines. Although you may purchase tickets at Alkyon in person, they will not reserve ferry or hydrofoil tickets for you in advance, and these often sell out.

From Skiathos, the ferry to Skopelos takes 90 minutes if you call at Skopelos town, or 45 minutes if you get off at Glossa/Loutraki; the one-way fare to both is about 12€. Ferry tickets can be purchased at Vasilis Nikolaou (tel. 24270/22-209 ), the travel agent at the corner of the Paralia and Papadiamandis. The Flying Dolphin hydrofoil takes 15 minutes to Glossa/Loutraki (four to five times daily; 15€), and 45 minutes to Skopelos (six to eight times daily, 17€). If you're on Skiathos, you can also take one of the many daily excursion boats to Skopelos.

There are infrequent ferryboat connections from Kimi (on Evvia) to Skopelos. Check with Skopelos Port Authority (tel. 24240/22-180 ) for current schedules, as they change frequently. As stated previously, I think hydrofoils are worth the extra expense for hopping around the Sporades.

In the port of Skopelos town, hydrofoil tickets can be purchased at the Hellenic Seaways agent, Madro Travel, immediately opposite the dock where ferries tie up. It also serves as the Olympic Air representative.

 Where is Skopelos?

Skopelos is part of the northern Sporades Islands in the Aegean Sea. These are located just off the east coast of Greece north of the island of Evia (Euboea) – the second biggest Greek island after Crete.

Skopelos is larger in size than both Santorini and Mykonos with an area of 96 square kilometres (37 square miles). The nearest islands with any sizable population are Skiathos to the west and Alonissos to the east.

When to visit Skopelos

Tourist season in the Greek Islands runs between May all the way through early November. Visitor numbers peak in the summer months which is considered high season for the island.

Like many of the Greek islands, Skopelos has a Mediterranean climate. This makes summer the best time to visit.

Warm weather is to be expected between June and September with the hottest month of the year being July. Temperatures can reach highs of 32°C and lows of 21°C.

If you are looking for a beach break, visiting any time in summer should give you sunny days and a low chance of rain.

The shoulder months of May and October may be the best time to visit Skopelos if you want fewer crowds and cheaper prices. You will still experience pleasant weather but without hordes of tourists.

How to get to Skopelos

As with many of the Greek islands, getting to Skopelos means getting there by boat.

Ferries connect up with the island’s main port (also called Skopelos), but there are three ports in total on the island.

There are a variety of different types of ferries. Some of these are for foot passengers only while others take cars in addition.

Getting there from the mainland can be achieved by ferry via a couple of routes. Firstly, you could opt to take the ferry from Agios Konstantinos in central Greece (three hours) as there is no ferry to Skopelos from Athens.

Another option is to board the ferry that departs from Volos in Thessaly. This route takes two hours.

And a further option again (and how I did it) is to fly to the neighbouring island of Skiathos (see below) and ferry from there, which takes around an hour.

If you are arriving in Athens the best option is to take the bus from the capital to Agios Konstantinos, which takes two hours. After that you simply hop on the ferry.

There are also ferry connections that connect Skopelos with nearby islands including Skyros, Alonissos, and Evia. These inter-island ferries are more frequent in the summer months, which is yet another reason to visit in summer rather than winter.

Flying to Skopelos

Skopelos has no airport so if you were thinking of catching a flight there, you’ll have to reconsider.

The closest airport is on the nearby Skiathos island. Domestic flights connect Skiathos with Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as destinations around Europe in the summer months.

From Skiathos, you can then take one of the daily ferry connections to Skopelos (around one hour).

skopelos holidays

 Getting around Skopelos

A good way to get around Skopelos is by using its bus network . The KTEL buses work well if you want to explore the island and visit some of the more popular beaches and villages. Most of the buses start and end in Skopelos town. There are four different bus routes costing between €2 and €4.

There are taxi ranks in the main towns on Skopelos and they are good for getting around after you have been out for the evening. Note that these do not use the meter and have an established rate for journeys, although this can be somewhat expensive. Be sure to ask first.

Car/scooter rental

The best way to get around is by hiring your own set of wheels. Car hire can be reasonable especially out of high season. If you are visiting in the height of summer, then you might want to book ahead.

Skopelos Accommodation

There are three main towns & villages that are popular bases for those who are visiting Skopelos.

The main one is Skopelos town . This is the main port and capital of the island and is a protected Heritage site. It’s a pretty town with beautiful, white-washed buildings and colourful wooden shutters. There’s even a 13th-century castle here.

Some of the nicest accommodations here are self-catering options overlooking the sea such as Aeolos Hotel . There is also the charming Denise Hotel and beautiful Olia Green , a boutique luxury hotel with stunning waterfront rooms.

For something truly special , romantic and secluded check out Christine’s House up in the hills with its chic luxe styling and private pool. Or, high on the hill in Skopelos Town there are Villea Seaview Apartments , three utterly charming little houses that are right out of a postcard. Great value and excellent service by the wonderful host as well.

If you are travelling as a family or group check out Artemis Garden on the outskirts of town who have a gorgeous 2 and 3 bedroom villa set amongst a stunning tranquil garden. Another excellent option is Thimisi House , a stunning renovated house in the heart of Skopelos Town which can sleep up to 7 people in 3 bedrooms.

Budget travellers would be hard-pressed to beat Thea Home Hotel or Pansion Prodromina for both ambience and amenities or Achinos one-bedroom Guest House if you want something fully self-contained and very private.

Another place to stay on Skopelos is Skopelos Glossa – it is the second largest town and is located 25 kilometres from the capital. It is a sloping village with white-washed houses and views out over the sea. The ferry port here makes it a good place to stay if you want to explore nearby islands too. Here we are big fans of Aegean Wave and Natura Luxury Boutique Hotels.

The third option is Neo Klima . This resort village is located 19 kilometres to the west of the capital and has lots of local tavernas and shops as well as a good beach for swimming and sun-bathing. Check out Anna Marie-Vanessa Apartments right on the waterfront and Elios 2- bedroom villas in the hills above.

Or, for the full resort experience Adrina Beach Hotel , just outside Panormos, is located right on one of the best beaches on the island and has some of the best reviews in Greece!

Skopelos restaurants and food

Food to try.

There are many traditional Greek dishes to expect on the island of Skopelos. When dining in local tavernas, you can enjoy classics such as stuffed tomatoes , moussaka , Greek salad and beef stifado .

One local speciality that you should try is strifti pie – a mouthwatering goat’s cheese and spinach pastry that is deep-fried. Like most of the Greek Islands ( actually all of them!) Seafood plays a big part in the cuisine of Skopelos especially when you’re eating near a beach or port. Fish is locally caught, and popular dishes include grilled sardines , stuffed squid and lobster .

Plums are a favourite and are grown widely on the island. They often come served with meat such as pork or rabbit and can be used on desserts. Local honey and fruits are also a must-try.

Skopelos tavernas, bars and cafes

You are in for a treat when you are dining out on Skopelos. There is a big selection of local tavernas and eateries situated in cobbled lanes and right by the sea.

Recommended restaurants include the famous Agnanti in Glossa, which has been a favourite and landmark eatery since it opened its doors in 1958. Stou Dimitraki enjoys a similar reputation in Skopelos Town.

Zoupa in Skopelos town is a romantic spot in an oasis courtyard that provides meals made with local produce as does very charming Olivo. Azan is the new kid on the block and has been causing quite a stir since opening.

It’s worth a trip up the hill in Skopelos Town to visit Peparithos with its sweeping views and beautiful garden and similarly Η Πλατεία in Neo Klima for its authentic Barbeque.

For somewhere to eat with ocean views nothing beats The Muses , also located in Skopelos town or Nikos Taverna in Panormos or Korali Seafood Restaurant on Agnontas Beach (see photo below).

In terms of Bars Vrachos All Day Bar on the harbour in Skopelos Town is the place to be or Mercurius Cocktail Bar for a late-night tipple.

There are numerous tavernas on the beaches that have sunbeds and umbrellas including Apanemo Beach Bar on Limnonari Beach, Milia Beach Bar on Milia Beach and popular Kastani Beach Bar on Kastani Beach which has lots of shade and plenty of sunbeds.

Things to do on Skopelos

Skopelos beaches.

The beaches in the Sporades Islands are generally very good and Skopelos is no exception. With forests of trees hanging right down to the crystal clear water the conditions are excellent for a very laid back Greek beach vacation.

Stafilos Beach is five kilometres from Skopelos town. It is a large pebble beach in a curving bay that is lapped by sparkling waters. Here, you can find a taverna for a lazy lunch and a beach bar for drinks and snacks.

The main beach in Skopelos town is also a good option. It is close to accommodation and eateries, but so-called Town Beach is not the most beautiful beach on the island. There are some ruins of a temple nearby for something to add to this beach outing.

Hovolo Beach is one of the most picture-perfect beaches on the island. Much of the natural environment here is unspoilt, so don’t come here expecting water sports or many facilities. Instead, you can enjoy rocks and interesting coves for snorkeling and exploring.

Twelve kilometers from Skopelos town you will find Panormos Beach . It is an attractive spot with great facilities that makes it perfect for spending a long day by the sea.

Neo Klima’s Elios Beach is a pleasant place for soaking up some sun. It has amenities such as showers and tavernas. This part of the island’s coastline is linked to its patron saint, Riginos.

One of the most popular things to do on Skopelos in recent years is the Mama Mia Island Tour . This will take you to the beautiful little Church where the wedding took place as well as other spots of interest used in the film.

Monuments of Skopelos

Skopelos Church of Agios Ioannis Kastri (Chapel of St.John)

Currently the most famous landmark on Skopelos, this lovely church is located seven kilometers to the north of Glossa. It was here that some scenes from the movie Mamma Mia were filmed. It is a particularly pretty church that sits up high on rocks and overlooks the island’s coastline.

Monastery of Evangelistria

You will find this important monument just outside of Skopelos town. It sits on the slopes of Mount Palouki and was originally constructed in 1712. The monastery is home to valuable religious icons from the Byzantine era and the internal dome is covered in Gold Leaf. The views are also quite stunning.

Venetian Castle

The Venetians were one of the many civilizations that laid claim to the island of Skopelos through the ages. One remnant of their rule can be found in the island’s main town. Getting to the castle is part of the fun as it involves walking through winding streets up to the high fortress.

Sentoukia pirate graveyard

Though this sight is more off the beaten track it is still an interesting thing to discover while staying on Skopelos. Centuries ago, pirates would plunder the island and others in the area and these tombs have been connected to them. In truth nobody knows who the tombs are for or how long they have been there.

Museums of Skopelos

Antoniou Family Olive Oil Museum

This olive oil mill with beautiful views is situated close to Glossa. Here you can learn about olive oil and purchase cold-press olive oil made right there for a delicious souvenir.

Skopelos Cultural Heritage Museum (Folklore Museum of Glossa)

This museum is situated in a renovated house built in 1926 in the village of Glossa. The museum opened its doors in 2008 and works to promote the cultural history of the island. Here you can see items from Skopelos naval history as well as photographs, manuscripts, and personal belongings.

Skopelos Folklore Museum ( Vakratsa Mansion )

This museum is situated in a historic house right in the middle of Skopelos town. It tells the story of the folk traditions of the area. The furniture in the museum belonged to the original family who owned it.

Museum of History

This museum is situated inside the house of 19th-century writer Pavlos Nirvanas. Today it showcases items from the history of the island of Skopelos from antiquity to the present day.

SKOPELOS Nature and outdoors

Drakontoschisma

This rock is connected to a legend regarding Saint Riginos. The dragon was terrorizing and eating the residents of the island until Riginos hunted the dragon down and killed it (apparently around 800 years ago). It is possible to get to Drakontoschisma by boat or you can view it from the cliffs above.

Scuba diving

Those who like to dive will find Skopelos an interesting spot to do so. There are multiple dive centers on the island that offer guided diving tours of great locations situated around the coastline. Free diving is also well known on Skopelos.

Like many Greek islands Skopelos offers many opportunities to walk around in its beautiful natural setting. There are a number of different trails for visitors, from simple strolls along the coast to full day hikes between villages on the island. It pays to take join a local on a guided hike too.

Taking a boat out to explore neighbouring islands is a popular option on Skopelos. One option is to head to Alonissos. This island boasts its very own national marine park. Here you may be able to spot dolphins, seals, and seabirds in their natural habitat.

Events on Skopelos

It worthwhile understanding what festivals or events may be on during your Skopelos holidays, especially if there are any national holidays involved.

Religious Events

February 25 is marked by the Feast of Agios Riginos . This local festival to honor the island’s patron saint takes place every year at Agios Riginos Monastery in Skopelos town. The relics of the saint are transferred, and locals attend vigils.

Easter is a colourful religious celebration everywhere in Greece. Think food, marching bands, processions, and fireworks. This takes place each year according to the Julian Calendar, usually between one and four weeks after western Easter.

Transfiguration of Jesus Christ takes place August 6. It is a popular feast day on Skopelos.

One of the most important religious events on Skopelos, as it is elsewhere in Greece, is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary . This takes place on August 15 and sees nationwide celebrations including traditional music and dancing. On Skopelos, celebrations can be found across the island but the main festival takes place in Glossa. Here you can enjoy live music and good food and wine.

On December 4 the island celebrates the Feast of Agia Varvara . This takes place at the Monastery of Agia Varvara and involves vigils and feasting on fish.

Other Events on Skopelos

The island’s Wine Festival is a must for wine lovers. This takes place every year in mid-September. Expect free-flowing wine, music, and dancing.

Another major event in August is the Loizia Festival . This festival honours the Greek-Cypriot composer Manos Loizos with storytelling, live music, and food.

The International Film Festival for Youth occurs in Skopelos town during July and August. Young people take part in workshops, and you can see screenings of films made by international filmmakers.

Hi there I lived on Skopelos for 3 years and loved it - I have many fond memories. I am now living on the mainland in Volos. I know a few people who live on Skopelos who might be able to help you with accommodation so let me know when you are planning to go and what sort of accommodation you are looking for and i'll ask around work wise - I worked for a tourist company but they are not there anymore, many of the comanies either closed down or stopped going to the island, there are always some jobs going in the summer though depending on what you are willing to do. the best option would be to go to the tourist offices, Skopelos Blue, Thalpos Travel and Madro Travel are good starting points and may have some part time work or be able to point you in the right direction. Let me know if there are any other things you want

I'm going to skopelos at the second week of August. I'm thinking to get a bus in the airport of Athens to Agios Konstantinos and get the boat to Skopelos. How can I do this, i'll arrive at athens by 7 or 8 p.m. And Skopelos, how is it? Thankyou.

madro travel skopelos greece

Information about Skopelos island

skopelos

It is a green island, where the pine trees almost touch the blue-green waters of the sea, an ideal destination for unforgettable holidays. Skopelos also has a great cultural heritage. The island has been famous since ancient times for its wine, the great tradition in pottery and wood carving.

The visitor will be transported back in time by the unique ancient carved tombs from the Roman or early Christian period located in the Sendoukia area, the tomb of Prince Staphylos, where his famous sword was also found in the bay of the same name, while the Asklepiion of Skopelos in the location of Ampeliki which it is considered one of the most ancient sanctuaries of the god of Medicine, Asclepius.

In the long journey back to history and tradition, the island’s museums are important cradles! Museums, mansions and traditional houses “unlock” different aspects and eras of the rich history of Skopelos. Skopelos is one of the few places in the world where temples, chapels and monasteries “bind” inextricably with nature and the unique residential identity and create a living painting.

skopelos chora

The picturesque villages with the imposing architecture of stone and wood complete the puzzle of the charming images of the island. Paved alleys, cobblestones, special architecture, huge bougainvillea on the balconies and the picturesque houses transport you to another era.

Dozens of dreamy beaches will seduce you with their blue-green waters and impressive vegetation ending without exaggeration in the sea! The lacy shores create natural coves and caves that will take you back to the past, when fearless pirates raided the unspoiled corners of the island.

Skopelos, in addition to impressing with its landscapes, beautiful routes, picturesque villages and heavenly beaches, also lends itself to activities in nature, such as kayaking, diving, cycling and hiking.

Skopelos with its little secrets as well as its popular places is waiting for you to get to know it and discover it.

Boats stop at both the port of Loutraki in the north west corner of the island and at Skopelos Town on the east coast. Ferry schedules often refer to Loutraki as Glossa which is the name of the lovely hill top town above the not particularly inspiring port. Both Glossa and Skopelos Town are delightful in their own ways – the former is unspoilt, totally Greek and steadfast in its resistance to all the more obvious trappings of tourism.

The island is known for its relaxed atmosphere and welcoming locals, creating a warm and inviting ambiance that permeates the nighttime festivities. Unlike some of the more raucous party destinations in Greece, Skopelos offers a more laid-back and authentic nightlife experience. Skopelos Town is awash with bars, cafes, gift shops and travel agencies but it’s still one of the loveliest towns in the archipelago with narrow cobbled streets winding up from the waterfront to the hilltop Venetian castle. The town has no fewer than 123 churches and some lovely traditional houses with brown timber balconies adorned with vivid bougainvillea and brightly coloured pot plants.

skopelos-island

The island’s verdant countryside is littered with numerous impressive monasteries, many of which are in spectacular locations. Most are deserted but some are still inhabited by nuns who offer their loom-woven textiles for sale to a steady stream of summer visitors.

If you explore the interior you’ll also come across many old stone houses, called “kalyvia”, nestling amid the pine and cypress woods. The houses have distinctive outdoor ovens in which the islanders used to bake plums to produce the prunes for which Skopelos was once famous. You’ll still find prunes served up in various guises at tavernas all over the island.

skopelos-sporades-islands

Most of the island’s beaches are pebbled and the best are scattered along the south and west coasts. At Agnondas on the south coast you can join the locals for a fresh fish lunch at one of the many tavernas lining the beach.

Panormos on the west coast is a full-blown holiday resort with plentiful hotels, tavernas, watersports and other tourist facilities. But if it’s solitude you crave, don a pair of sturdy walking shoes or take a water taxi from Skopelos Town and you’ll be able to find numerous secluded coves peppering the coastline, well off the tourist track.

skopelos-mythology

Theseus meets the daughter of Minos and Pasiphae, Ariadne, who falls in love with him and helps him by giving him a ball of thread, the well-known “Myth of Ariadne”, so that he can find the exit of the labyrinth. So Theseus kills the Minotaur, finds the exit and kidnaps Ariadne. Leaving Crete for Athens, Theseus and his companions make a stopover on the island of Naxos.

There, the god Dionysos appeared in his dream, ordering him to leave the island without Ariadne, because Ariadne was meant to be his wife. Drawing evidence from a local version of the myth, Dionysus takes Ariadne to the island of Lemnos, whereupon they have four sons together, Thoantas, Inopion, Staphylos and Peparithos.

This myth, like other related ones, verifies in the best way that Skopelos was inhabited by Minoans, constituting a Minoan colony during the years of Cretan-Minoan prosperity. It is also concluded that during the Minoan era, there were contacts and trade relations of the Cycladic islands with the North Aegean, Asia Minor and Argolis which, as is known, were centers of Mycenaean civilization

skopelos history

Even in the oracle of Delphi, the inhabitants of Peparithos had dedicated a statue of the god Apollo, because they had defeated the Carians in a battle.

Peparithos also had important ancient cities such as Knossos, Panormos and Selinous. Today, a large part of the castle in Panormos is preserved. Knossos was renamed Glossa.

In Byzantine times it was used as a place of exile. In the years of the Frankish rule, it was part of the duchy of Naxos, but later it was occupied by Licarios, who served the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos. Since then it remained Greek until 1453, to then pass under the rule of the Venetians.

Its many coves are a refuge for pirates. In 1538 the Turkish admiral Hayreddin Barbarossa captured the island and massacred its inhabitants. Foreign travelers who visited the island in the 16th c. they say it was uninhabited. Later it was colonized again but experienced many pirate raids.

In pre-revolutionary Greece, it was the lair of the fighters Nikotsaras and Yiannis Stathas. It was officially incorporated into Greece, along with the rest of the Sporades, in 1823.

skopelos

What impresses the visitor to this blessed beautiful island is the lush green forests that occupy the impressive majority of its surface. Rightfully so, Skopelos is considered one of the greenest islands in the Aegean.

The capital of Skopelos is the town of Chora or Skopelos. The municipalities of Glossa (former municipality of Glossa) include the villages of Glossa, Atheato and Loutraki. In addition, the administrative district of Klima includes the Old Klima as well as the Neo Klima (Elios).

Local Products and Cuisine

But gastronomy is not only an art of the land but also of the sea. The fresh fish and seafood in Skopelos excite locals and visitors, Greeks and foreigners.

All of nature’s wonderful raw materials allow talented scopers to “paint”! Savory and sweet local recipes are offered in tasteful restaurants and traditional taverns of the island.

cheese-pie

The ritual of the meal is completed with the local sweets such as plum, almond, sour cherry and orange as well as others such as mustaleuria, rosettes, almond and hops, all of which taste like a dream! After all, the local cooperatives and producers hold all the secrets, so you can take some of the culinary magic of the place with you.

If you’re staying outside Skopelos Town it’s worth spending at least a day or two exploring the captivating and convoluted streets of this enchanting port town which boasts no less than 123 churches, many fine old mansions and some irresistible tiny shops selling local produce such as honey, prunes and home-made sweets.

Diving in Skopelos is an amazing experience for diving lovers. Especially at the point where you find the wreck of the trading ship Christoforos that sank near the shores of the island. There are two diving schools in Skopelos

Bars, cafes and craft shops line the waterfront and as you venture into the back streets you’ll delightful walkways, studded with pebbles and sea shells, winding their way up to the Venetian fortress which crowns the town. If you’re interested in the local churches you can get a map pinpointing their whereabouts from helpful Thalpos Travel on the waterfront.

skopelos-church

The town has a plentiful supply of craft, souvenir, antique and jewellery shops where you can ferret for unusual gifts including loom-woven textiles made by the local nuns. For an insight into a traditional Skopelan house, visit the Folklore Museum which has a range of local costumes, embroidery and furniture on display in a 19th century mansion behind the harbourfront.

Of the island’s 40 monasteries , five are clustered in the hills above Skopelos Town and can be visited either on foot or on a coach tour organised by one of the local travel agencies. Most of the monasteries have wonderful views of the island and at two of them – Moni Evangelistrias and Moni Timiou Prodromou you can buy handicrafts made by the nuns who live there.

skopelos-monasteries

Seafood fans should take a trip out to the small port of Agnontas at the southern end of the island, where locals come to dine at the fish tavernas alongside the pebble beach.

marine-life

You’ll be provided with binoculars, snorkeling gear and equipment to record dolphin signals and if you’re lucky you may spot some of the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seals which inhabit these waters. The trip is aboard a large caique captained by a marine biologist who makes the experience both educational and fun. You can make reservations through Madro Travel opposite the ferry dock in Skopelos Town.

Sights and attractions

Venetian castle of skopelos.

The ruins of this 13th century Venetian fortress are visible from all over Skopelos Town and there is a pleasant walk up steps from the chapel of Panayitsa tou Pyrgou at the end of the harbour.

The climb is probably more interesting than the castle with a maze of narrow, whitewashed alleys at almost every turn and panoramic views over the harbour and bay. If you get lost just head upwards and you will find the castle and a welcome taverna.

The ruined fortress was first built in 340 BC by Philip of Macedonia and underwent lots of rebuilding, in particular by the Ghisi family in the 13th century. Unfortunately all that’s left now are a few broken walls and inside the church of Agios Athanisos. Oh, and the quite spectacular sights over the bay below.

Agios Ioannis Chapel

This picture postcard chapel needs little introduction having featured in the hit movie Mama Mia and rated one of the top sights on Skopelos. It’s located in the remote region of Kastri on the north coast about 7 km east of Glossa. Agios Ioannis is an impressive sight on top of the 100m high rock with amazing view along the coast of Skopelos and over the sea to neighbouring Alonissos. Its origins are something of an island mystery. Some say locals saw a glow up there and carved 105 steps up to find an icon of Agios Ioannis. Every time they took the icon away it miraculously made its own way back so they eventually built a chapel to house it. The interior has several icons and old ecclesiastical bits and pieces. There is a small beach nearby that can get quite crowded in summer.

Ancient Stafylos

The most important and best-known archaeological site of Skopelos is Stafylos, located on the rocky peninsula, where there was a settlement during the Mycenaean period. Its importance is evident from the archaeological excavations that revealed findings that prove the island was inhabited during this period, while there are also remains of Mycenaean walls.

Of course, the most important and impressive archaeological discovery was the impressive 32 cm long sword with forged decoration and a handle coated with gold leaves, found inside the famous Mycenaean tomb and attributed to Staphylos.

This emblematic, for Skopelos, unique sword is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Athens. Behind the beach of Staphylos there is another beach, Velanio, where the archaeological dig brought to light traces of habitation during the Mycenaean era. It is remarkable that in the countryside of Skopelos, individual monuments documenting the productive activities of the ancient societies of Peparithos are constantly being discovered.

The museum has a diverse collection of traditional items, such as traditional clothing, tools, and everyday items that were used by the local inhabitants of the island.

The museum presents exhibitions explaining the culture and history of Skopelos. These exhibitions offer information about the traditions, customs and evolution of the island over the years.

Asclepieion of Ancient Perarithos

One of the most important monuments of the ancient city of Peparithos is considered to be the Asklipieio, located in the “Livadi – Ampeliki” location on the southeast side of the gulf of Skopelos. Asklepiion of Skopelos is considered one of the most ancient sanctuaries of the god of medicine, Asklepiio. The Asclepius was located by the archaeological hoe, exploiting an inscribed votive base dedicated to the Asclepius.

Also, amphorae, red-figure Attic vases, parts of statues, clay figurines and coins have been discovered by the archaeological expeditions. The finds chronologically assign this sanctuary to the period from the 4th c. until the Hellenistic period. In a kiosk recently installed in the Archaeological site of Asklepiion, finds are displayed for visitors.

The tombs of Sendoukia

On the Karya mountain northwest of Skopelos Town and above the beautiful Monastery of Ag. Efstathiou with its excellent view, in the location of Sendoukia, there are four exceptional ancient tombs from the Roman or early Christian period that have the characteristic of being carved! In general Chests have many stories and legends to show with hidden treasures. Two of the graves are parallel to each other and separated by a third that is incomplete and another that is parallel to the three and located two meters further. The three completed tombs have 2.5m covers of monolithic slabs.

Towns and Villages

Skopelos is a picturesque Greek island with several charming villages scattered across its landscape. Each village has its own unique character, history, and attractions. Each village on Skopelos has its own charm and allure, making the island a diverse and delightful destination for travelers. Whether you prefer the bustling streets of Skopelos Town, the traditional ambiance of Glossa, or the coastal beauty of villages like Agnontas and Panormos, Skopelos offers a range of experiences to suit different tastes and preferences.

Chora the capital of Skopelos

Various cultural events and photography exhibitions are organized throughout the year. In May and June, conferences and workshops are organized with topics from the long history of the island and research efforts for its further cultural and touristic development. Don’t miss the musical events that the Municipality organizes at the end of August and last for a week. On the last day, the plum festival takes place, where baked plums and wine are offered. By boat or with your own means of transport you will reach Sares, Agios Konstantinos and Glysteri beaches.

skopelos-town

The main tourist draw apart from Skopelos Town is the picturesque hillside village of Glossa, home to 1,200 people and views to die for. The traditional village way of life has so far managed to stand fast against the annual and ever growing holiday visitor influx and the place oozes charm, in contrast to dull Loutraki below.

Many houses in Glossa have wooden balconies and the surrounding fields are full of plum and almond trees. Several dirt roads provide walks to nearby sights of interest. These include the monastery of Agion Taxiarchon, built on the ruins of a 7th century Byzantine church and the Gourouni Cape lighthouse.

Tracks lead down to often deserted beaches with coves at Myrtia and Koutria to the north-west and Perivoli, Pethameni, Hondrogiorgi, Keramoto,Mavraki and Spilia in the north-east. Many however are difficult to find and only Spilia and Perivoli have roads leading to them.

Pethameni is at the bottom of a precipitous path but Hondrogiorgi has easier access and is popular with locals. At Spilia there is a cave and a chapel to Agios Ioannis built on a spectacular headland above a double coved beach. The headland was created when the cliffs collapsed into the sea and the pretty chapel featured strongly in the hit movie musical Mamma Mia.

Neo Klima is a serene coastal village nestled between hills covered in pine forests. It features a picturesque bay with crystal-clear waters. The village is an excellent place to relax on the beach, swim, and enjoy fresh seafood in the local tavernas.

Klima has a picturesque harbor with colorful traditional buildings lining the waterfront. This harbor is often filled with fishing boats and sailboats, adding to its charm. There are several small beaches in the vicinity, including Klima Beach and Limnonari Beach. These beaches are ideal for swimming and sunbathing.

neo-klima

Loutraki is the small  port for the hill village of Glossa and the first port of call for ferries from Skiathos and the mainland. There is a long, cement quay, a scruffy collection of houses and some imposing cliffs behind. Not many visitors stay here, preferring the more attractive hill village of Glossa above.

But this quiet fishing village has kept to its traditional ways and has Loutraki nothing of the commercialism found in the main port of Skopelos Town, although cafes and tavernas are plentiful and the village has hotel rooms to supplement the accommodation in Glossa.

There are beaches nearby, the largest is a rather unkempt pebble right behind the pier and some quieter coves within walking distance, the most notable being a shingle beach at Katalakou in the south and at Glystra to the north.

Loutraki was known as Selinounda in ancient times and there are ruins aplenty such as a Roman bathhouse, the remains of a temple to Athena and an ancient agora market place.

Agnontas is a charming coastal village located on the Greek island of Skopelos. Situated on the southwestern coast of the island, Agnontas offers a tranquil and picturesque setting for visitors looking to escape the hustle and bustle of larger towns. With its small harbor, colorful houses, and serene atmosphere, Agnontas is a hidden gem on Skopelos. Here’s some information about this lovely village:

Agnontas is approximately 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) southwest of Skopelos Town (Chora), the capital of the island. It is well-connected by road, making it accessible for tourists. The village is centered around a picturesque harbor that is often filled with fishing boats and small yachts. The harbor area is lined with tavernas and cafes, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a meal by the sea.

Agnontas boasts a beautiful pebble beach with clear waters. This beach is ideal for swimming and sunbathing, and it is well-sheltered from strong winds, making it a peaceful place to relax.

argontas

Panormos is renowned for its stunning natural surroundings. The village is nestled in a sheltered bay with a beautiful sandy beach and crystal-clear waters. The lush green hills and pine-covered slopes that surround the village create a tranquil and idyllic setting.

Panormos Beach is the main attraction in the village. It is a well-organized sandy beach with sunbeds and umbrellas available for visitors. The calm and shallow waters make it suitable for swimming, especially for families with children. Water sports activities are also available here.

Panormos offers a range of accommodation options for tourists, including hotels, apartments, and traditional guesthouses. Many of these accommodations provide stunning sea views and easy access to the beach. The village has a variety of tavernas and restaurants where you can savor traditional Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. Fresh seafood is a specialty in many of these establishments, and you can enjoy your meal with a view of the sea.

Where to stay

Skopelos is a relatively small island and attracts hordes of holidaymakers in high season. Many hotels are booked up months in advance by the tour companies so it’s best to arrange holiday accommodation before arriving on the island, especially in July and August.

The Hotel Owners Association of Magensia has lists of available rooms for rent. It’s located next to the town hall on the main waterfront. Room owners meet arriving ferries. The bigger hotels in Skopelos Town are usually full except in the spring or autumn but there are many comfortable rooms to rent, at good rates.

The main Skopelos beach holiday resorts at Panormos and Stafylos are well stocked with hotels, apartments and studios and there are private houses to rent. Away from the crowds is the hilltop town of Glossa in the north of Skopelos and taverna owners usually know of rooms to let in the village or nearby.

Getting around Skopelos

Roads on Skopelos are generally good. The main asphalt road runs for around 35 kilometres from Skopelos town goes through Stafylos (4 kilometres) then Agnontas (8 kilometres), Panormos (18 kilometres) then Milia and to the villages of Elios (24 kilometres) and Klima (28 kilometres) then to Glossa (32 kilometres) when it drops down into the port of Loutraki.

The route is very scenic, wending its way through pine forests, olive groves and plum orchards often skirting the island beaches. Minor roads turn to gravel and dirt. There are four petrol stations on Skopelos so filling no problem but finding a parking place in Skopelos Town can be difficult in August as cars are banned from all but the main road to the port and along the waterfront.

Three buses daily run the length of the island from Skopelos to Stafylos, Agnontas, Panormos, Milia, Elios, Klima, Glossa then back through Loutraki, Milia and Agnontas. There are also several buses daily to Agnontas. Extra bus services are added during the high summer season. The main bus stop in Skopelos Town is 100 yards from the harbour next to the taxi rank.

The main taxi stand is on the Skopelos Town waterfront near the bus station. Taxis have fixed rates to various destinations. Note that ferries often leave Skopelos port at around 7am when taxis can be in short supply. It is often a good idea to hang on to your hire car until the last minute. There are also the usual cars and mopeds to rent in Skopelos Town and Elios. Most are found on the eastern outskirts of Skopelos Town and some offer very cheap deals.

Skopelos is a delight to explore by day with its lush, green interior criss-crossed by ancient paths which lure hikers, bikers and horse riders ever deeper into the densely forested countryside. The island is awash with olive groves, plum, pear and almond orchards along with swathes of tall pines which sweep down to secluded coves. Follow the dirt tracks to the myriad of monasteries and churches which speckle Skopelos and take the time to browse the streets of the island’s two main settlements which rate among the most charming towns in the Greek islands.

The church nearest the ruined castle is Agios Athanasios which was built in the 11th century and houses some fine 16th century frescoes. The castle itself was originally built by King Philip of Macedon in the 4th century BC and rebuilt by the Venetians who ruled the island for 300 years from 1204.

Of the island’s 40 monasteries, five are clustered in the hills above Skopelos Town and can be visited either on foot or on a coach tour organised by one of the local travel agencies. Most of the monasteries have wonderful views of the island and at two of them – Moni Evangelistrias and Moni Timiou Prodromou – you can buy handicrafts made by the nuns who live there.

A monastery well worth visiting in the north of the island is Agios Ioannis which perches quite spectacularly on a boulder above the sea. If you’re a keen hiker you can make a four-hour round trip from the lovely hilltop town of Glossa which is a must on your list of places to visit. The town is blissfully peaceful and unspoilt, still very Greek in character but with remnants of the Venetian and Turkish occupations. The whitewashed, red-roofed houses cling to a steep hillside above the island’s second port of Loutraki.

If you’re interested in the local marine life, book yourself on a weekend cruise of the National Marine Park which incorporates the nearby island of Alonissos and surrounding islets.

How to get to Skopelos

There is no airport on Skopelos, nor any likelihood of one being built. Visitors arrive by boat after flying to the neighbouring Skiathos International (JSI) airport. Skiathos airport was opened in 1972 and lies about two kilometres from the port where ferries can be caught for Skopelos.

Most visitors to Skopelos fly to Skiathos, get a taxi to the port where there are daily ferry and catamaran services that operate to the port of Loutraki on the south-west coast, a journey time of 30 minutes and/or to the main port of Skopelos Town which takes about one hour. An alternative is to fly to Athens and get an internal domestic flight to Skiathos. This is probably the most flexible option and can be the cheapest but internal flights to Skiathos usualy leave very early in the morning.

Visitors can also fly to Thessaloniki Airport on the mainland. Seasonal cheap flights operate from April to October and there are ferry sailings from there or from the port at Volos

Skopelos is well-connected to the mainland and neighboring islands by ferry. The main ferry route to Skopelos is typically from the port of Volos on the mainland. Volos serves as a major gateway to the Northern Sporades. The ferry schedule to Skopelos can vary seasonally. During the summer months, there are more frequent departures, while in the off-season, schedules may be less frequent. The ferry journey from Volos to Skopelos typically takes around 3 to 4 hours on a conventional ferry and about 2 to 2.5 hours on a high-speed catamaran.

Several ferry companies operate routes to Skopelos, including Hellenic Seaways, ANES Ferries, and more. The availability of ferry companies and schedules can vary depending on the season, so it’s advisable to check in advance and make reservations if possible. Ferries traveling to Skopelos come in various types, including conventional ferries and high-speed catamarans. The choice between these types often depends on your preferred travel speed and comfort level.

Getting to Know the Amazing Island of Skopelos

madro travel skopelos greece

Key Takeaways

  • Skopelos is part of the Sporades archipelago and is considered the greenest in the Aegean with dense forests and a traditional character.
  • Skopelos offers a rich and varied natural environment, rare geomorphology, and high ecological value .
  • It is a refuge for seals and offers opportunities for swimming alongside friendly seals.
  • Skopelos can be reached via Volos, Agios Konstantinos, Thessaloniki, or the island of Kymi .
  • The best towns to explore include Chora, Glossa, Neo Klima, Paleo Klima, and Loutraki Glossas .

One of the most beautiful Greek islands one can come across is the amazing Skopelos , which is an attraction for many tourists every year.

Skopelos is a magical destination, beloved both by the inhabitants of the country and those abroad who decide to visit Greece for their vacations.

In recent years, and especially after the production of the film ' Mamma Mia,'  visits to Skopelos - but also to all the Sporades - have increased rapidly.

The island of Skopelos belongs to the archipelago of the Sporades (yeap, we can see island-hopping dreams already forming in your mind) and, more specifically, of the Northern Sporades, being the second island of the Sporades after the equally popular Skiathos .

The island was known as ‘Peparithos’ and was famous for its wine in ancient times. It is said that it was originally inhabited by Cretans, whose leader was Stafylos, who was the son of Ariadne .

The current name was given during the Hellenistic period. It is most likely that it was named ‘Skopelos’ in the 4th century AD.

Reasons to Visit Skopelos

madro travel skopelos greece

1. For its delectable local cuisine. Skopelos’ plum , known around the world for its antioxidant property, is included in most of the traditional dishes that you should try to taste.

The ‘rofos’ fish stew, beef or pork with plums, and plum spoon sweet are some traditional dishes that will ignite your senses.

But, of course, you should not forget the Skopelos’ cheese pie, ‘hamalia’ and macaroons.

2. With dense forests that cover almost 80% of its land, Skopelos is considered the greenest island in the Aegean , with good tourist infrastructure and an unspoiled traditional character.

3. Skopelos is an island with wonderful contrasts, a continuous journey through time. It has a very rich and varied natural environment and despite its small size, it presents rare geomorphology with strong contrasts and many areas of high ecological value.

4. Skopelos is part of the marine park of the northern Sporades and is a refuge for seals . So it is possible to swim next to a friendly seal in one of your swimming endeavors.

5. The more adventurous visitors can climb a hundred steps carved into the rock and enjoy the stunning view of the north coast, the steep side of the island.

Next to Ai-Giannis is the Cave, an enclosed space reminiscent of a swimming pool. Finally, in the direction of Perivoliou , it is worth visiting the homonymous beach with the rich seabed and the Gourouni Lighthouse which is an architectural masterpiece.

How to Reach Skopelos Island

madro travel skopelos greece

There are four options to reach Skopelos : through the cities of Volos , Agios Konstantinos , Thessaloniki , and the island of Kymi .

If you decide to reach Skopelos from Northern Greece , the only way to do so is by embarking on the ship from Volos.

On the other hand, if you come from the South of Greece, you can choose between Agios Konstantinos and Kymi .

Last but not least, you can also access Skopelos from the city of Thessaloniki by boat.

The journey from Volos to Skopelo s takes about 3:30 hours by regular boat, about 2:30 hours by catamaran, and 2:20 hours by flying dolphins.

On the other hand, the journey from Agios Konstantinos to Skopelos takes about 4 hours by regular boat, about 2:40 hours by catamaran, and 2:40 hours by flying dolphins.

You can reach Agios Konstantinos through the public transportartion in Greece , and specifically by KTEL Buses . In addition, there is a daily response from the Intercity Bus Station in Athens to Agios Konstantinos. The route is 165 km long and it takes about 1 hour and 55 minutes.

You can reach Volos also by KTEL Buses, in 6 hours, and by train. By train, you can reach Volos from Athens within 4 hours and 30 minutes, and from Thessaloniki within 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Additionally, you can reach Skopelos by taking the airplane to Skiathos . From there, you can arrive at Skopelos by ferry. There are daily 3-4 ferries that make the route from Skiathos to Skopelos .

Skiathos Airport is a small regional airport that serves the needs of the Sporades. Airline tickets are available on the internet and there are daily flights to and from the island.

The Best Towns and Villages to Explore

Skopelos town.

madro travel skopelos greece

First and foremost, the doll-like capital of Skopelos , Chora , looks as if it belongs to the Cyclades . As you look at it from afar, the first thing you notice is a sea of tiled roofs on white houses that seem to lean against each other.

Its alleys zigzag up amid whitewashed terraces, stained glass windows, and domed churches that sprout here and there.

The largest and oldest settlement in Skopelos , Chora, is attached to rigid hills in a protected natural harbor.

The city center is car-free and has labyrinth-like alleys and stairwells surrounded by impressive bougainvillea plants.

Like most regions of Skopelos, there is no part of its Chora that stands far from a cute little church. There are only 120 churches alone in this city, with the oldest standing tall since the 11th century.

madro travel skopelos greece

The second-largest settlement of the island, after Chora, is located 25 km north.

Stretched across the slope of a hill, the picturesque Glossa appears amphitheatrically built after a winding turn of the road.

Narrow alleys, manicured houses of traditional architecture, and colorful corners compose its appearance.

If you find yourself in this village after leaving your boutique hotel, do not forget to try local delicacies in some of the taverns and homemade plum spoon sweet from the women's agricultural cooperative ' Glossotissa .'

The view of the sea from Glossa is spectacular, and different at almost every step, while catching a sunset there will be one of the highlights of your trip to the island.

madro travel skopelos greece

At a distance of 18 Km from Skopelos and next to the sea is the village of Elios or Neo Klima .

This new settlement was created in 1981, after the destruction of Klima by the earthquakes of 1965.

This area of Skopelos, where Elios was built, is pine-covered, and enchanting, with the beautiful town beach of Holovos .

There is a beach along the entire length of the village, many rooms to let, and hotels, cafes, and restaurants

Paleo Klima

madro travel skopelos greece

Paleo Klima is a village near the sea, with rich vegetation. You can find olive trees, pines, plum trees, and vineyards there.

It is 26 km northwest of Chora. There used to be two settlements, Pano and Kato Klima .

The latter was destroyed by landslides and transported to the location of Elios or Neo Klima.

Loutraki Glossas

madro travel skopelos greece

The winding road that descends the slope from Glossa, brings you to Loutraki , the secondary port of the island -the main one is in Chora.

Loutraki is located around 35 km northwest of Skopelos’ Chora. It belongs to the community of Glossa, from which it is 2 km away.

The Best Skopelos Beaches

madro travel skopelos greece

Kastani beach became famous from the movie ' Mamma Mia'  and not unjustly. Kastani is located right next to Milia beach and at a distance of 21 km from Skopelos’ Chora .

The two beaches -Milia and Kastani- are connected only by a path that passes over the rocks that seemingly separate them.

In Kastani, there is a large beach bar that utilizes a part of the beach with sunbeds. Before the beach, there is free parking space available.

However, if you do not want to experience the fully organized side of Kastani, make sure to bring your own beach umbrella with you because in Kastani there is no shade after the morning hours.

People love Kastani because its sandy beach with crystal clear waters is combined with the modern comforts that a well-organized beach can offer and create a destination of relaxation and beauty. It is about 24 minutes from the port by car.

madro travel skopelos greece

Stafylos is the beach that you have seen more times than any other beach of Skopelos on social media.

A beautiful pine-covered cove with absolutely transparent, shockingly shallow waters, sand, and fine pebbles.

Due to the fact that it is stunning and extremely family-friendly, it comes as no surprise that it gathers quite a lot of people.

Do not leave the island if you do not visit the coast of Stafylos, a breath away from Chora , as it is separated from it by only 4 km.

madro travel skopelos greece

Famous and cosmopolitan, with waters reminiscent of an exotic island, fine pebbles, and tufted pines that reach the sea, Milia beach is a sight to behold.

A rock divides it in two, with the left part being busier -and organized- and the second somewhat quieter. The sunset looks magical from here; don’t miss it for the world!

madro travel skopelos greece

Pebbled and majestic, Panormos is one of the island's largest and most popular beaches . It is also a spot from where one can admire a spectacular sunset.

Late in the afternoon, just before sunset, its waters become golden, making your dives in its shimmering waters unforgettable.

Panormos beach is fully organized. If you’re traveling to Greece with kids , please keep in mind that the waters deepen abruptly. It is located 15 km west of Chora.

madro travel skopelos greece

If you’re a fan of fluffy sand at the bottom of the sea, the Limnonari beach is for you. It has crystal clear waters and a wonderful frame of pine trees behind it. It is also organized and very popular.

There may not be many beaches where you can sunbathe while you see wild kids jumping from rock to rock.

However, this is exactly what takes place on the beach of Limnani , just 10 km from the town of Skopelos .

The name of this beach means ‘small lake,’ which refers to the calm of the sea in this bay, where private boats anchor a little further from the shore.

The beach is pebbled, which means that it would be most comfortable for you to lie on a sunbed: half of them are run by the beach bar and the other half by a tavern. The tranquil waters of Limnonari are safe for children and also perfect for some snorkeling.

madro travel skopelos greece

The beach of the settlement of Elios , also called Neo Klima , consists of both sand and rocks.

This beach may not look like an exotic paradise like other beaches on the 'Mamma Mia' island, but it offers easy access and many options for dining and accommodation .

No one can deny that comfort is a major factor in enjoying your summer day to the fullest.

madro travel skopelos greece

Glygoneri beach is also called Agios Konstantinos and is one of the closest beaches to Skopelos Town or Chora.

The beach is fully organized, with sunbeds and umbrellas. It boasts incredibly clear waters, while its coast consists of a little sand and several pebbles.

madro travel skopelos greece

The main feature of Velanio beach is the tranquility offered by the luscious natural landscape.

To go to Velanio, you have to cross the beach Stafylos on foot and walk up the path on the rocks, as there is no direct access by car.

Don’t worry, though! It is an easy route, and the beach will reward you with its stunning beauty.

Another thing you should know about Velanio is that it is the only official nudist beach in Skopelos .

Regardless, it is friendly to everyone, both nudists and non-nudists. The beach boasts both an organized part with a beach bar and an unorganized one with plenty of free space to spread your towel.

At the edge, it has an impressive cave, and along its length, you will come across a fine pebble beach and deep blue waters typically of the Aegean Sea .

madro travel skopelos greece

Sarres beach is located just a stone's throw from Skopelos Town and is accessible only by boat.

The cave that separates one side of the beach from the other creates a special setting you will never forget.

Due to the fact that is more difficult to access than most of Skopelos’ beaches , it usually doesn’t get as crowded as the rest of the beaches on the island. For that reason, it is perfect if you’re looking for peace and quiet.

Agios Ioannis

madro travel skopelos greece

Just below the church of Agios Ioannis in Kastri , which you’re probably already familiar with if you’ve watched ‘Mamma Mia,’ lies the homonymous beach.

It is a pebbled beach with incredible emerald waters that can only be reached on foot, but it is well worth the effort. It is not organized, but you will find a canteen for the necessary supplies close to the free parking space.

Try to avoid visiting Agios Ioannis beach when the wind blows from the north. You can easily detect that if you see waves rising in the port of Skopelos.

During those days, we highly suggest you choose one of the western and southern beaches instead, such as the beaches of Panormo, Stafylo, Hovolo, and Milia .

madro travel skopelos greece

Half the beach of Agnontas is located in front of the homonymous settlement. You can swim on the right side of the beach with the green waters and the big plane tree.

Accroding to Greek mythology , it took its name from Olympian Agnontas , who landed on the beach bringing his medal from the road races. Enjoy the allure of the beach and relax under the warm summer sun.

Armenopetra

madro travel skopelos greece

Armenopetra is another organized beach, which is located shortly after Neo Klima.

The trademark of the beach is the upright rock located on the left side of it.

Armenopetra beach is another spot on the island from where you can admire a striking sunset , so it is perfect if you’re a couple in love.

madro travel skopelos greece

Glysteri beach is waiting for you in the northern part of the island, on the ring road that leads to the famous Castle.

Picturesque and beautiful, Glysteri stands out for its natural beauty.

Near the beach is the house -Villa Donna- where the outdoor shooting of ‘Mamma Mia!’ took place.

Chondrogiorgi

madro travel skopelos greece

Chondrogiorgi beach consists of small coves with rocks in the sea. It is good to have water with you and everything else that is necessary, as there is no canteen or beach bar nearby, and the beach is not organized.

Regardless, Chondrohiorgi beach will steal your heart with its charming appearance and refreshing waters.

madro travel skopelos greece

Hovolo beach is quite unique. The organization here shines through its absence, as access to Hovolo has a level of difficulty.

You will need to walk a little in the -shallow- waters behind the rocks to find yourself in this small pebbled paradise with its turquoise waters and dreamy silence. Of, course it is well worth it!

Getting Around Skopelos and Its Secluded Beaches

madro travel skopelos greece

Transport within the island of Skopelos can take place via taxis, buses, car rentals, bicycles, and boats. Depending on your budget, level of fitness, and where you want to go.

The distances to the island are short and most transport routes are covered most times in less than 1 hour. The island has 4 buses that run all seasons on the main body of the island.

Namely, across Skopelos Town , Glossa , and Loutraki Glossas . They last from about 2 to 55 minutes depending on where you choose to stop.

In specific, you will need 55 minutes to Loutraki from Chora, and only 5 minutes to reach Stafylos from the same point of departure.

There are also private minibusses that make excursions to beaches, monasteries, Agios Ioannis in Kastri, Perivoliou , and other places.

In addition, there are many taxis on the island, as well as car, ATV, bicycle, and boat rental companies, and boat trips that will allow you to explore the whole of Skopelos island in any way you see fit.

The truth is that due to the morphology of the island's soil, in order to discover all the beauties of the place, you will definitely need -if not for all your vacation days for several of them- your own means of transport.

In fact, due to the intermediate trip to the ports of departure from Volos,  Agios Konstantinos, Kymi, and Thessaloniki , most visitors arrive with their own vehicle, which gives them complete independence.

This way, you’ll have to be wherever you want, whenever you want, no questions asked.

Additionally, from July 20 to August 17 there is a possibility that the buses will be crowded. Therefore, during that time it would be wisest to choose to drive your own vehicle or rely on taxis for your transportation.

On several beaches, the bus stops are higher than sea level and you have to walk a few meters, while there is no bus line to the wonderful monasteries of the island and to Agios Ioannis in Kastri but also to many northern beaches.

From the island, in addition to the regular ferry and catamaran routes, there are also boats mainly to Alonissos , the marine park that performs one-day excursions.

There is also a boat for Glysteri beach as well as some boats for rent or charter for one-day or short-day holidays.

Things to Do in Skopelos, One of the Most Offbeat Greek Islands

madro travel skopelos greece

1. Stroll Skopelos Town . Your acquaintance with the amphitheatrically built Skopelos Town over the port, the picturesque town of Skopelos, is one of the most basic must-dos on the island.

White houses, traditional corners, colorful flowers, uphill cobbled alleys, and small churches that are scattered around the region are the images that will be captured forever in the memory of your mind.

2. Explore Skopelos’ Castle . The pale white steps, starting from the edge of the port, will lead you to the Castle of Skopelos.

From there, you will enjoy unlimited views of the settlement, the port, and the church of 'Panagia tou Pyrgos', which stands on top of a cliff, ready to dive into the deep blue of the Aegean Sea.

3. Pay a visit to the Skopelos Folklore Museum . Take a look back at the past and learn about the history of Skopelos' tradition, making a stop at the Skopelos Folklore Museum, housed in Skopelos Town, in a restored mansion of the last century.

There, folk art and handicraft collections, household items, and a variety of local traditional costumes are on display for you to see.

4. Discover ‘ drakontosxisma ’, which translates to ‘the cutting of the dragon’ in English. Legend has it that 800 years ago there was a dragon on Skopelos that killed the locals and destroyed their homes.

To protect them, Agios Riginos, patron saint of Skopelos , chased the dragon, causing the beast to fall off the cliff and be killed. The area, which opened from the fall, was named Drakontoschisma.

You will discover it on the road from Stafylo to Amaranto, turning left on the dirt road and again left on the fork that forms a little further down.

5. Admire the Monastery Of Evangelistria . Its creation is related to the Daponte family, one of the oldest families on the island. The old monastery was renovated in 1712, to take the form it has today.

This is one of the countless Byzantine monuments that are preserved on the island, which you will find east of Chora, "perched" on a mountain.

There, you will admire the fortress precinct of the monastery but also the panoramic view of the Port and Skopelos Town, which stretch at your feet.

6. Climb to the Lighthouse of Gourouni . At the northern end of Skopelos, you will get to the Lighthouse of Gourouni by taking the passable dirt road that starts from the village of Glossa.

Since 1884 the imposing and silent rotating lighthouse of Skopelos has been dominating the area, with a radiance of 20 nautical miles and a height of 17.80 m.

It first operated during the Turkish Occupation, it remained off until 1944, it was electrified in 1984, and it was finally automated in 1989.

7. Go for a ride in a carriage. For those of you who are incurably romantic, a ride along the port of Skopelos is considered imperative. The sea breeze in combination with the summer mood, the idyllic atmosphere, and the illuminated setting create the perfect setting for an amazing time.

8. Get into Skouloukia Cave . The large bare rock near the top of Mount Kyra has signs of human intervention in the form of ancient tombs cut from stone.

There are four in total, about 2.5 meters long and partially covered with large slate slabs that have been overturned as a sign that the tombs had been looted for a long time.

The age of the tombs is not certain, but it is probably from Roman or Early Christian times. Kyra is also known for its mountains, while the Monastery of Efstathiou is a short walk on the slope from the tombs.

The other big draw is the view over the strait of the green and blue island of Alonissos

9. If you are in Skopelos and you have several days at your disposal, it is the perfect opportunity to visit the nearby Greek islands. We highly suggest you take the boat to Alonissos and enjoy a one-day excursion. It is incredibly worth taking a taste of the amazing beaches of Alonissos .

10. As much as you love relaxation, maybe it would be worth spending a day touring places that are directly related to Greek culture .

In Skopelos, you will find the Folklore Museum in Chora, while if you love Greek poetry you should not miss a visit to the house-museum of the famous Greek poet of the so-called generation of the '20s, Pavlos Nirvana .

11. Skopelos has two mountains, the highest of which is Delphi . Also, Skopelos has many monasteries, which are "hidden" in the mountains.

So one can combine a walk in nature, which is everything you need to relax and rejuvenate, by visiting small and picturesque monasteries and churches.

Finally, it is worth noting that for those who are not ready for a lot of walking, there are easier routes on the 'Mamma Mia' island, since there is a network of cobbled streets and paths that stretch from the north to the south coast. The same routes are suitable for cycling.

What to Eat and Drink in Skopelos

madro travel skopelos greece

The cuisine of the island consists of a wide variety of traditional Greek dishes, which highlight all the fresh Greek products that thrive there.

A famous specialty of Skopelos and Greek cuisine is the twisted cheese pie, made with local cheese and fried in olive oil.

Also, the roast stew, the meat with the quinces, the famous local goats from the islets of Giura and Kyra Panagia that drink seawater, and the pork with plums, are some of the other specialties for which the island is famous.

At the same time, as we cannot forget that Skopelos is an island, there is plenty of fresh fish and seafood offered in all taverns.

Spoon sweets are another strong point of the local cuisine, with the most popular being the ‘ avgato ’, which is made from a variety of plums that thrives in the area. ‘ Haimalia ’ is another local traditional dessert made from almonds and is offered at weddings.

In Skopelos, you will find taverns and restaurants for all tastes, both in Skopelos Town and in the surrounding villages. ‘The dolphin of Skopelos’ stands out for its affordable dishes and excellent quality.

You will find it on the beach of Panormos. Additionally ‘Muses’ tavern, located in the port of Skopelos offers a premium location by the sea with very good quality food and fine dishes.
