My Chemical Romance Reveal Opening Acts for Rescheduled 2022 Reunion Tour Dates

They'll finally get a chance to "carry on" as My Chemical Romance 's pandemic-delayed reunion tour is finally happening stateside. The band just revealed the full rescheduled itinerary for North America after having to continually push back the shows due to COVID-19's impact on the touring industry.

The tour will now officially get underway Aug. 20 in Oklahoma City, with dates running through Oct. 29 which is the final scheduled night of the When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas. The group has also added 14 new shows in 10 cities to the itinerary. See all cities, dates and venues listed below. Tickets for the new dates will go on sale this Friday (March 11) at 12N local time.

In addition, My Chemical Romance have filled the run with a variety of opening acts, including the reunited Midtown, Badflower, Turnstile, Taking Back Sunday, The Bouncing Souls, Thursday, Kimya Dawson, Meg Myers, Devil Master, Dilly Dally, Ghosh, Nothing, Shannon and the Clams, Soul Glo, Surfbort, The Homeless Gospel Choir, The Lemon Twigs, Waterparks and Youth Code all playing select dates.

My Chemical Romance announced their plans to reunite in the fall of 2019, though the seeds of a potential reunion were planted as far back as 2017.  "In 2017, we got in a room together to see what would happen," MCR wrote on Twitter in December of 2019 . "A couple more jam sessions and 39 days of rehearsals later, we’re ready to show you what we’ve learned. See you soon."

The band played their first reunion show at the Shrine Expo Concert Hall in Los Angeles on Dec. 20, 2019, reportedly grossing nearly $1.5 million for the band. The group then started announcing more and more tour dates for 2020, but the pandemic wiped out those plans.

The group will play in the U.K. and Europe this May and June, before focusing on the U.S. this fall. See all of their scheduled dates and get ticketing info here .

My Chemical Romance Kick Off Reunion Tour with New Music, Rare Performances: Video + Setlist

Including the live debut of their new single, "The Foundations of Decay”

My Chemical Romance Kick Off Reunion Tour with New Music, Rare Performances: Video + Setlist

My Chemical Romance were finally free to proceed on their much-delayed reunion tour , making their first stop at the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK on Monday night (May 16th).

The band unloaded 21 tracks for a breakneck performance that covered every era of the esteemed emo group’s career with some unexpected deep cuts and long-awaited stage debuts. They wasted no time showing off their new tricks, kicking off the show with their comeback single and first released music in eight years, “The Foundations of Decay.”

As if the sound of new MCR wasn’t enough to pump up the audience, the band dove straight into the core of their catalog with “Helena.” The extensive setlist was full of hits (“Teenagers,” “Welcome to the Black Parade”) but also included plenty of surprises from the band’s under-sung later entries like 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys and their last studio release, 2013’s Conventional Weapons compilation. The latter project got particular shine after two songs from the album, “Surrender the Night” and “Boy Division,” graced the stage for the first time.

Elsewhere, MCR showed they are truly marching toward world domination on this upcoming tour as they dusted off The Black Parade staple “This Is How I Disappear” for the first time since 2010.  But the biggest crowd-pleasers came during the band’s three-song encore, where they closed out with the anthemic “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” and the rousing send-off “The Kids from Yesterday.”

Watch fan-captured footage of the concert and see the full setlist below.

In total, My Chemical Romance will embark on 64 dates across Europe and North America in 2022 and Australia and New Zealand in March 2023. MCR also tops the roster for several festivals this summer including Las Vegas’ When We Were Young , Saramento’s Aftershock , Dover’s Firefly , Chicago’s Riot Fest , and Atlanta’s Music Midtown . They’ll be supported throughout the tour by the likes of Badflower, Devil Master, Dilly Dally, GHÖSH, Kimya Dawson, Meg Myers, Midtown, Nothing, Shannon and the Clams, Soul Glo, Surfbort, Taking Back Sunday, The Bouncing Souls, The Homeless Gospel Choir, The Lemon Twigs, Thursday, Turnstile, Waterparks, and Youth Code. Fall in line with The Black Parade via Ticketmaster .

My Chemical Romance Brings Its Reunion Parade to an Enraptured Philly Arena: Concert Review

concert review

For a band that busted apart nearly a decade ago, My Chemical Romance  — the toast of the 21st century’s emo-glam-empowered power-pop crowd — never lost a beat in regards to packing in millennials, and those even younger, to its 2022 reunion tour. Youthful ebullience and loud adoration were immediately noticeable when attending MCR’s Monday night packed-to-the-rafters concert at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center, a live showcase postponed for two years due to the pandemic’s slowdown.

Popular on Variety

Dressed down for the occasion (Way wore baggy short-shorts, high-top sneakers and a T-shirt reading “Pool Boy at the Vampire Mansion”), MCR saved its usual sartorial dramatics for its raging setlist. Standing before red velvet curtains that dropped to reveal a decimated cityscape, MCR started with the new-ish “The Foundations of Decay” – a slow, Hammer Horror-esque song with willowy, Cure-like guitars that blossomed into a crunch-chunking fast track before its screamo finale.

Even at their briefest – for example, “Boy Division” – MCR manages to pack in more theatricality, harmony and melody into three minutes than anyone else. Such levels of grandeur, tunes-manship and high conceptualism were on fullest display during the piano-led, military-drummed “Welcome to the Black Parade” and its immediate follow-up, “Mastas of Ravenkroft.”

But the grandest of all theater remained between the band and its audience on Monday night. When he wasn’t busy pushing his sweaty mop-top from his face or bouncing across the stage, Way was interacting with the Wells Fargo’s devoted, conducting their reactions like a maestro with waving arms. He smirk-smiled precociously as he positioned his microphone toward the crowd during “Famous Last Words” and the raunchy, rarely performed “Vampires Will Never Hurt You.”

As he slinked his way through the back-to-boogie, snake-charming “Teenagers,” Way sang reminiscings of youth and the awkward prejudices he felt as a kid.

They said, “All teenagers scare the living shit out of me They could care less as long as someone’ll bleed” So darken your clothes or strike a violent pose Maybe they’ll leave you alone, but not me

As Way embraced the lyrics of “Teenagers” from 2006, cleanly cackle-crooning in his manner through its us vs. them theme and its richly chugging pulse, the singer was embracing the black parade of kids in front of him in 2022, clutching them to his breast. And thus devotion was shared, communally, between the crowd and their Chemical Romance. If “emo” truly stands for emotion in its punk-iest fashion, then My Chemical Romance — 20 years after its start — should hang onto that tag forever if Monday’s show was any indication.

My Chemical Romance made their return to the UK last night to kick off their reunion tour, debuting new music and rarities at their first show here in 11 years – see footage, setlist and more below.

The band, who disbanded in 2013 and released their “eulogy” final song ‘Fake Your Death’ the following year, have been gearing up for a  reunion tour from this spring after getting back together in December 2019 to play their first show in seven years at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles.

My Chemical Romance Extend 2022 Reunion Tour

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

UPDATE (3/9/22) : My Chemical Romance have added a 14 new shows to their long-awaited reunion tour , and released additional tickets to previously announced gigs. The group’s expanded itinerary — which is available below, new dates in bold — will find them hitting 10 new cities and adding more shows in Brooklyn, Toronto, Boston, and Los Angeles. Tickets for the new gigs will go on sale this Friday, March 11, at 12 p.m. local time via the My Chemical Romance website .

My Chemical Romance’s reunion tour — originally scheduled to begin September 2020 — has been pushed to 2022 as the impact of Covid-19 continues to linger in the U.S. and other nations around the world.

“We are deeply sad, but those emotions are only a fraction of the depth of feeling we have all experienced watching the suffering and loss of the past year,” My Chemical Romance said in a statement Friday. “We just want to be as sure as we can be that everyone is safe. Refunds will be offered to anyone who wants them.  We are sorry if this is disappointing, and we really can’t wait to see you in 2022.”

In January 2020, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, My Chemical Romance announced their first U.S. tour in nine years with a September 2020 start date. However, five months later amid the pandemic, the band rescheduled those shows to begin September 2021. Those dates, following Friday’s postponement, are now scheduled for 2022.

Check out the MCR’s site for the new itinerary; all tickets will be honored for the new dates, while fans who can’t attend the rescheduled shows can request a refund by May 16th.

My Chemical Romance were also set to headline both the 2020 postponed and 2021 rescheduled Aftershock Festival as well as the 2021 Riot Fest , but the band’s gigs at those festivals have been canceled as part of Friday’s postponement. Both festivals are still scheduled to take place, with Aftershock tweeting Friday that a new headliner was “to be announced” and Riot Fest revealing that MCR’s headlining gig there will now occur in 2022.

Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance performing at Eden Project.

My Chemical Romance review – emo’s elder statesmen march into new era

Eden Project, St Austell Frontman Gerard Way’s emo scream is back at full throttle as a new generation of adoring fans join in the rowdy singalongs

E mo never dies: the fourth wave of the angsty rock subgenre began a decade ago and you could argue that now, with all the fretful pop-punk in the charts, we’re on to a fifth. So My Chemical Romance could not have timed their comeback better, making a new generation of fans as their original teenage audience ages into stadium rock. The band split after 12 years in March 2013, but remained beloved by the MySpace generation; tickets to a one-off reunion show in December 2019 sold out in minutes. Now, after several pandemic-related delays, MCR’s world tour gets under way in St Austell, Cornwall.

The band have nearly a year on the road ahead of them, playing to stadiums of tens of thousands, so these two relatively intimate dates at the 6,500-capacity Eden Project allow them to ease into it. Fans are rapturous at the mere fact of a reunion, and any initial trepidation over how MCR might sound in 2022 seems to come from the stage: the band are somewhat stiff through the sombre opener The Foundations of Decay, which was released only days before the show. That choice seems too preemptive, given their well-loved back catalogue – a warning against expecting exactly the same band you loved back in 2004.

But then they launch into Helena – emo’s ceremonial standard, and a defining video of millennials’ MTV – and the years melt away, with frontman Gerard Way’s swooping, heartfelt chorus echoed by the crowd. Though endearingly awkward with the audience, fretting about his overgrown fringe and asking the spotlight to be turned off him (“It makes me self-conscious”), Way is in command of the mic: spidery-fingered and snake-hipped, his emo scream is at full throttle.

The setlist is split between their Queen-esque melodrama and fun thrash-y punk, with rowdy singalongs to Teenagers and Na Na Na, and ventures into camp on Mama and Vampire Money. Against a backdrop of an apocalyptic cityscape (and the Eden Project’s red-lit biomes), MCR fully commit to the world-building and sardonic humour that has seen their music age much better than many of their contemporaries.

Predictably, the greatest enthusiasm from the crowd was reserved for songs from Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and their beloved 2006 concept album The Black Parade, with Way seeming struck by the reverent response to Famous Last Words. MCR might now be elder statesmen of emo, but the inclusion of later material, plus the hint of a new project titled Swarm on the merchandise table, reiterate that this is not a legacy act cashing in on nostalgia, but a much-loved band re-entering the fray.

Even Way seems surprised by the youthfulness of the crowd – this will have been the first gig for many pandemic-age teenagers. As the uplifting final call-and-response to I’m Not Okay (I Promise) affirms in the encore, The Black Parade marches on with new recruits.

MCR dropped their first new song since 2014’s “Fake Your Death” last week, the melancholy six-minute rave-up “The Foundations of Decay.” The band played the song for the first time live at the Eden Project in Cornwall, England on Monday night, where fans noted that the merch booth appeared to tip a possible theme for the band’s expected return around the theme “ Swarm .” MCR broke up in 2013 and first announced plans for a reunion tour in the fall of 2019 and managed to play one show that December before the COVID-19 pandemic caused the outing to be pushed back multiple times; their North American tour is now slated to kick off on August 20 in Oklahoma City.
