Mediterranean Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

As one of the greenest islands in Greece, Corfu is an emerald treasure amidst the colorful Mediterranean landscape. From Paleokastritsa, hike to the mountaintop for unparalleled views of the Ionian Sea. Or get a taste of Corfu when you team up with a famous chef, and handpick local produce that they’ll use to prepare your lunch. Experience it all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.

Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

As the largest port in the Mediterranean, Marseille is the gateway to opportunity. On a Mediterranean cruise, spend the day in Arles, and explore the landscapes that inspired much of Van Gogh’s artwork. Stroll through the MuSaMa, a soap museum, and create your own blend alongside a master soap maker. Or roam the city’s most popular landmark, Notre-Dame de la Garden, a Catholic basilica that overlooks the city.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Santorini is the epitome of Greece. Wander into the welcoming cafes in Oia, a village teeming with whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs. Continue to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and taste the bouquet of wines produced on the island, making sure to visit the black-sand beach of Kamari before heading back to your Mediterranean cruise ship.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean

In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.

World-Class Dining

Captivating cuisine

With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.

Bold reds and crisp whites

The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Ancient Ruins

Where history comes to life

From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art Galleries & Museums

Artistic ingenuity abounds

From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.

Sun-Kissed Beaches

A vision of natural beauty

Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Mediterranean excursions

But before we delve into the packing list, let’s take a quick look at what you can expect from a Mediterranean cruise in May in terms of weather conditions and the overall experience.

Overview of Mediterranean Cruise in May

May is an excellent time to embark on a Mediterranean cruise, as the weather is generally mild and pleasant. The Mediterranean region offers a diverse range of destinations, from bustling cities to scenic coastal towns and historic landmarks.

One advantage of cruising the Mediterranean in May is that the peak summer tourist crowds have yet to arrive. This means you’ll have the chance to explore popular destinations without the overwhelming crowds, making your experiences more enjoyable and relaxed.

During a Mediterranean cruise in May, you can expect to visit iconic cities such as Barcelona, Rome, Athens, and Dubrovnik, as well as smaller ports like Santorini, Nice, and Amalfi. Each destination offers a unique blend of history, culture, delicious cuisine, and beautiful landscapes.

One of the highlights of a Mediterranean cruise is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich history of the region. Explore ancient ruins such as the Acropolis in Athens and the Colosseum in Rome, or marvel at the beauty of architectural wonders like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. In addition to historical sites, you can also indulge in the Mediterranean’s vibrant culinary scene, savoring authentic pizzas in Naples, tapas in Barcelona, and fresh seafood in the Greek Islands.

Another benefit of cruising in May is the ideal weather conditions. The Mediterranean has a Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm summers and mild winters. In May, temperatures range from the mid-60s to the mid-70s Fahrenheit, creating pleasant conditions for exploring ashore and enjoying the onboard amenities.

Overall, a Mediterranean cruise in May offers a perfect balance of comfortable weather, fewer crowds, and a diverse range of destinations. To make the most of your cruise experience, it’s essential to pack accordingly and bring the right clothing, accessories, and other essentials.

Weather Conditions in May

When packing for a Mediterranean cruise in May, it’s important to consider the weather conditions you can expect during this time of year. May is generally a pleasant month to visit the Mediterranean, with mild temperatures and moderate rainfall.

The Mediterranean region experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm summers and mild winters. In May, the temperatures can vary depending on the specific destination, but you can generally expect temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to the mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 18 to 24 degrees Celsius). This means you’ll likely experience comfortable weather for outdoor activities and sightseeing.

While the days are usually warm, it’s important to note that evenings can be cooler, especially as you venture further into the month. It’s advisable to pack a light jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings, especially if you plan on spending time outdoors or enjoying the sea breeze on the ship’s deck.

In terms of rainfall, May falls within the shoulder season, meaning there is a possibility of occasional showers. It’s a good idea to pack a small travel umbrella or a waterproof jacket to be prepared for any rain showers that may occur.

When considering the weather conditions, it’s also worth noting that the Mediterranean Sea will still be a bit cool in May, so if you plan on enjoying water activities or swimming, it’s advisable to pack a swimsuit and a cover-up, as well as any necessary beach essentials.

In summary, May is a beautiful time to visit the Mediterranean, with comfortable temperatures and a lower chance of encountering large crowds. While the weather is generally pleasant, it’s a good idea to pack layers and a rainproof item to be prepared for any unexpected changes in weather. By considering the weather conditions, you can pack appropriately and ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable cruise experience in the Mediterranean in May.

Clothing and Accessories

When planning what to pack for a Mediterranean cruise in May, it’s important to consider the clothing and accessories that will keep you comfortable and stylish throughout your journey. Here are some essential items to include in your packing list:

  • Lightweight and breathable clothing: Opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen to stay cool in the warm Mediterranean weather. Pack a mix of shorts, skirts, t-shirts, and dresses that can be easily layered.
  • Long-sleeve shirts or cardigans: These can come in handy during cooler evenings and for visiting religious sites that require modest attire.
  • A light jacket or sweater: Bring a lightweight jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings or any unexpected changes in weather.
  • Sun hat and sunglasses: Protect yourself from the Mediterranean sun with a wide-brimmed hat and a pair of sunglasses.
  • A versatile scarf or wrap: A scarf or wrap can be a versatile accessory, providing warmth, adding style to your outfits, or even serving as a beach cover-up.
  • Formal attire: Depending on the cruise line, you may have one or more formal evenings. Packing one or two dressier outfits for these occasions is recommended.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Explore the ports of call comfortably by packing a pair of comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. Additionally, bring a pair of sandals or flip-flops for lounging by the pool or beaches.
  • Swimsuit and cover-up: Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit and a cover-up for relaxing by the pool or enjoying the beautiful Mediterranean beaches.

Remember to mix and match your clothing items to create different outfit combinations. Stick to a color palette that can easily be mixed and matched, allowing you to create multiple looks with fewer items.

Lastly, don’t forget to pack essential accessories such as underwear, socks, and pajamas. It’s also a good idea to bring a lightweight and foldable tote bag for carrying your belongings during excursions or beach visits.

By packing the right clothing and accessories, you’ll be well-prepared for the varying weather conditions and be ready to explore the beautiful Mediterranean destinations with comfort and style.

Daytime Attire

When planning your daytime attire for a Mediterranean cruise in May, you’ll want to prioritize comfort and versatility. Here are some essential items to pack for your daytime activities:

  • Light layers: As the weather can be changeable, be sure to pack a light jacket or cardigan that can easily be thrown over your outfit in case the temperature drops or for cooler evenings.
  • Swimwear and cover-ups: Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit and a stylish cover-up for lounging by the pool or visiting the beautiful Mediterranean beaches.
  • Sun protection: The Mediterranean sun can be intense, so remember to pack sunscreen, a sun hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.
  • Comfortable footwear: Opt for comfortable walking shoes or sneakers to explore the ports of call during the day. If you’re planning on visiting the beach or spending time by the pool, pack a pair of sandals or flip-flops as well.
  • Accessories: Complete your daytime look with accessories like a lightweight scarf, a crossbody bag, and minimal jewelry.

By packing a mix of casual and versatile items, you’ll be prepared for a variety of daytime activities, whether it’s exploring charming coastal towns, wandering through historic sites, or simply lounging by the pool.

Remember to check the specific dress codes or cultural expectations for any religious sites you plan to visit, as modest attire may be required. Additionally, consider bringing a lightweight backpack or tote bag to carry your essentials while exploring ashore.

With the right daytime attire, you’ll not only look stylish but also feel comfortable and ready to make the most of your Mediterranean cruise adventure.

Evening Attire

When it comes to evening attire for your Mediterranean cruise in May, you’ll want to strike a balance between comfort and style. Most cruise lines have specific dress codes for evening events, so it’s essential to pack accordingly. Here are some suggestions for your evening attire:

  • Cocktail dresses or dressy separates: For formal evenings or upscale dining venues, opt for elegant cocktail dresses or dressy separates such as a blouse paired with a skirt or tailored pants. Choose fabrics with a touch of sophistication, like silk or chiffon, to create a sophisticated and polished look.
  • Dinner dresses or jumpsuits: For a more versatile option, pack one or two dinner dresses or jumpsuits. These can be worn for both formal and semi-formal evenings, and they offer comfort and style in one ensemble.
  • Dress shoes: Pair your evening attire with comfortable yet chic dress shoes. Heels or dressy flats can elevate your look while ensuring you can walk comfortably during onboard activities or evening strolls on the ship’s deck.
  • Accessories: Complete your evening look with accessories that add a touch of glamor, such as statement jewelry, a stylish clutch, or a wrap or shawl for added warmth and style.
  • Formalwear: Some cruise lines may host formal events, where formalwear is required. In this case, pack a formal gown or a tuxedo to adhere to the dress code and enjoy a memorable evening of elegance and sophistication.

It’s important to check your cruise line’s dress code guidelines, as some may have specific requirements, such as jacket and tie for men or elegant eveningwear for women. By packing well in advance and being prepared for formal evenings, you can fully enjoy the special events and create lasting memories onboard.

Even on casual evenings, you may still want to dress up a bit for dinners or shows. Opt for smart-casual attire, such as dress pants or skirts paired with a blouse or a nice shirt for men. This allows you to feel comfortable while maintaining a polished appearance.

Remember, the goal is to feel confident and stylish while adhering to the cruise line’s dress code. Don’t forget to consider the weather and pack a light jacket or shawl to keep you warm during outdoor activities or if the temperature drops in the evening.

Evening attire on a Mediterranean cruise is an opportunity to showcase your personal style and enjoy the elegant ambiance onboard. So, pack your favorite evening outfits and get ready for memorable evenings of fine dining, entertainment, and sophisticated charm.

Swimwear and Beach Essentials

A Mediterranean cruise offers ample opportunities to soak up the sun and enjoy the beautiful beaches along the coast. When packing for your cruise, be sure to include the following swimwear and beach essentials:

  • Swimsuits: Pack a few swimsuits to make the most of the onboard pools and the pristine beaches you’ll encounter during your cruise. Consider bringing different styles to suit various activities, such as a one-piece for lounging and a bikini for swimming or water sports.
  • Cover-ups: A stylish cover-up is essential for transitioning from the pool or beach to other areas of the ship or nearby attractions. Choose a lightweight and breathable cover-up that can easily be put on or taken off as needed.
  • Sun hat and sunglasses: Protect yourself from the Mediterranean sun by packing a wide-brimmed sun hat and a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection. These will help shield your face and eyes from the sun’s rays.
  • Sunscreen: Don’t forget to pack sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from sunburn. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Beach towel: While most cruise ships provide pool towels, it’s still a good idea to pack a lightweight beach towel for excursions or visits to the beach. A quick-drying microfiber towel is an excellent option as it takes up less space in your luggage.
  • Beach bag: Carry all your beach essentials in a spacious and durable beach bag. Look for one that is water-resistant to protect your belongings from any unexpected splashes or rain showers.
  • Water shoes: Some Mediterranean beaches may have pebbly or rocky surfaces, so having a pair of water shoes can be handy for walking comfortably. They also provide added protection when swimming in areas with sharp rocks or marine life.
  • Snorkeling gear: If you enjoy snorkeling, consider bringing your own snorkeling mask and snorkel. While some cruise ships may provide gear, having your own ensures a better fit and hygiene.
  • Beach toys and games: If you’re traveling with children or enjoy beach activities, pack some beach toys or games to make the most of your time on the sand. Frisbees, beach balls, or sandcastle-building tools can add extra fun to your beach outings.

By packing the right swimwear and beach essentials, you’ll be ready to enjoy the crystal-clear waters, scenic beaches, and water-based activities that the Mediterranean has to offer.

Remember to check the specific guidelines of each beach or swimming location you visit, as some may have restrictions or additional equipment requirements. With your beach essentials in hand, you’ll have everything you need to make the most of the Mediterranean’s stunning coastlines.

Choosing the right footwear for your Mediterranean cruise in May is crucial to ensure comfort, versatility, and style. With a mix of onshore explorations, onboard activities, and beach visits, it’s important to pack a variety of footwear options. Here are some essential footwear choices for a Mediterranean cruise:

  • Comfortable walking shoes: Opt for a pair of comfortable walking shoes or sneakers that provide support and cushioning for walking and exploring the ports of call. Look for shoes that are breathable and have good traction to handle various terrains.
  • Sandals or flip-flops: Pack a pair of sandals or flip-flops for lounging by the pool, strolling on the deck, or casual beach visits. Choose ones with good arch support and secure straps.
  • Dressier shoes: Depending on your evening plans and the cruise line’s dress code, bring a pair of dressier shoes such as ballet flats, loafers, or dress sandals. These will elevate your outfit for formal evenings, specialty restaurants, or evening shows.
  • Water shoes: If you plan to participate in water-based activities or visit beaches with rocky or slippery surfaces, consider packing a pair of lightweight water shoes. These will protect your feet and give you stability while walking in and out of the water.
  • Gym or workout shoes: If you plan to use the onboard gym or participate in fitness classes, don’t forget to pack a pair of gym shoes or trainers. Look for lightweight options with good support for your exercise routines.
  • Slippers: While not essential, having a pair of comfortable slippers can be a nice addition for cozy evenings in your cabin or walking around the ship.

When deciding on footwear, consider versatility and practicality. Look for shoes that can be dressed up or down, work well for various activities, and can withstand different weather conditions.

Remember to break in any new shoes before your cruise to avoid discomfort or blisters during your travels. It’s also a good idea to pack some blister prevention products, such as moleskin or blister bandages, just in case.

With the right mix of footwear, you’ll be prepared for a range of activities and venues during your Mediterranean cruise. Whether you’re strolling through cobblestone streets, lounging by the pool, or dressing up for the evening, comfortable and stylish footwear is essential for a memorable and enjoyable experience.

  • Hair styling tools: If you have specific hair styling needs, such as a hairdryer, straightener, or curling iron, check if your cruise ship provides them in the cabins. If not, pack them accordingly.
  • Personal hygiene items: Don’t forget essential personal hygiene items like sanitary products, contact lenses or glasses with supplies, and any necessary medications.
  • Hand sanitizer: While cruise ships provide hand sanitizing stations, it’s always a good idea to pack a small bottle of hand sanitizer for extra cleanliness during excursions or on-the-go.

Remember to pack your toiletries and personal care products in leak-proof travel containers or bags to avoid any spills or messes in your luggage. Keep in mind that most cruise ships have restrictions on bringing certain liquids aboard, so be sure to adhere to their guidelines.

If you’re concerned about space or want to travel lighter, consider purchasing travel-sized toiletry products at your destination or utilizing the amenities provided by the cruise ship.

By packing the necessary toiletries and personal care products, you’ll be well-prepared to look and feel your best throughout your Mediterranean cruise in May.

In addition to the essentials, there are some miscellaneous items that can enhance your comfort and convenience during your Mediterranean cruise in May. Consider including the following items in your packing list:

  • Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, so it’s a good idea to bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day. Consider a bottle with insulation to keep your drink cool during shore excursions.
  • Travel pillow and blanket: To ensure a restful journey, pack a travel pillow and a lightweight blanket for added comfort during long flights and bus transfers.
  • Travel adapter and power strip: To accommodate all your electronic devices, it’s helpful to bring a travel adapter and a power strip with multiple outlets. This way, you can charge multiple devices simultaneously.
  • Laundry bag: Keep your dirty clothes separate by packing a small laundry bag. This will help with organization and keep the rest of your luggage fresh and clean.
  • Ziplock bags: Ziplock bags serve multiple purposes, including storing toiletries to prevent leaks, organizing small items like chargers or cables, and keeping wet swimsuits separate from the rest of your belongings.
  • Reusable tote bag: Packing a lightweight and foldable tote bag is handy for carrying miscellaneous items during shore excursions or for carrying souvenirs and purchases made throughout your trip.
  • Snacks: Having some light snacks on hand can be beneficial, especially during long excursions or if you have dietary restrictions. Pack a few non-perishable snacks to keep you energized throughout the day.
  • Earplugs and eye mask: For a peaceful sleep or moments of relaxation, don’t forget to bring earplugs and an eye mask to block out noise and light.
  • Travel-sized sewing kit: Accidents happen, so having a small sewing kit with needles, thread, buttons, and safety pins can be useful for minor repairs to clothing or accessories.
  • Cash in small denominations: It’s always wise to carry some cash in small denominations for tips, local transportation, or small purchases in places that may not accept credit cards.

Packing these miscellaneous items can make your travel experience more convenient and comfortable. While they may seem small and insignificant, they can greatly contribute to your overall enjoyment and preparedness during your Mediterranean cruise.

Remember to consider weight restrictions and any specific guidelines set by your selected cruise line. By packing thoughtfully and including these miscellaneous items, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey throughout your Mediterranean cruise.

As you prepare for your Mediterranean cruise in May, packing the right essentials is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. By taking into account the weather conditions, the activities you’ll be participating in, and the destinations you’ll be visiting, you can ensure that you have everything you need for a memorable trip.

From clothing and accessories to toiletries, medications, and entertainment items, each item on your packing list serves a specific purpose in enhancing your cruise experience. Lightweight and breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, and swimwear are essential for exploring ashore and enjoying time by the pool or on the beach. Packing toiletries, medications, and a basic first aid kit will help you stay fresh and prepared for any minor health concerns that may arise.

Additionally, electronic devices, books, and other entertainment items will keep you entertained during downtime and provide opportunities for relaxation. And don’t forget about important travel documents such as your passport, visas, and travel insurance, as well as any necessary adapters and chargers for your electronic devices.

Remember to pack responsibly, considering weight restrictions and any specific guidelines set by your cruise line. It’s also a good idea to make a checklist and double-check everything before your departure to ensure nothing is forgotten.

By meticulously planning and packing the right items, you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in the beauty and excitement of the Mediterranean region. So pack your bags, embrace adventure, and get ready for an unforgettable Mediterranean cruise in May!

Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Highlights

Ancient ruins.

Explore fascinating historical treasures on a cruise to the Eastern Mediterranean. In Athens, visit the famous ruins of the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena that dates back to 438 BC. Step inside Diocletian’s Palace in Split, a sprawling fort built for a Roman emperor in the fourth century. During an overnight stay in Jerusalem, see famous religious landmarks including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the scene of Jesus’ resurrection, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, two sacred Muslim sites.

Greek Sunsets

You’ll never forget the first time you witness one of Greece’s legendary sunsets. Oia, a picturesque town on the island of Santorini, and Zakynthos, a small island surrounded by impossibly blue waters, are both considered some of the best spots in the world to see the sun go down. Make your way up a cliffside restaurant or viewing point and watch as the sky transforms into a canvas of pink, orange, and purple hues in the distance.

Mediterranean Cuisine

Feast your senses on the delicious food and drink of this magical region. Explore the unique flavors of Eastern Europe during your days in port, where you’ll dine in seaside restaurants, wander through charming local markets, and sip some of the best wines in the world. Enjoy grilled fish and fresh octopus in Greece. Order a plate of black risotto, a Croatian specialty, in Split or Dubrovnik. While in Israel, eat as much hummus, falafel, and baba ganoush as your heart desires.

Featured Ports

Sail into the sparkling coast of Dubrovnik, a chic Croatian port known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” Walk around the well-preserved city walls and admire the scenic terracotta rooftops. Feast on Croatian wine and oysters, two of the region’s delicacies. Visit the Rector’s Palace, a stunningly restored Gothic building. Enjoy a leisurely bike ride around a nearby village, then lounge under the sun at one of Dubrovnik’s lovely sandy beaches.

You’ll fall head over heels with Santorini as soon as you step foot on this idyllic Greek Island, where winding alleys are surrounded by white-washed buildings, blooming flowers, and spectacular views of the Ionian Sea. Explore the cliffside villages of Fira and Oia and their cafes, restaurants, and blue-domed churches. Sail around the island’s scenic half-moon-shaped bay while marveling at a volcanic caldera. Or lounge under the sun and dip your toes in one of Santorini’s famous black sand beaches.

East meets West in Istanbul, a cosmopolitan city located between Europe and Asia that combines the best of both worlds. Learn all about the rich history of iconic landmarks like the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. Go shopping at the labyrinth Grand Bazaar, where you’ll find all sorts of handmade treasures. Sip on a glass of Turkish tea by the Bosphorus, the body of water that separates the European and Asian sides of the city.

Eastern Mediterranean Cruise Itineraries

The Eastern Mediterranean cruise season begins in late May and lasts until mid-October. You’ll find everything from 6-night jaunts around Croatia, Greece, and Montenegro and 7-night sailings that stop in Italy, Malta, and Croatia, to lengthier journeys around the area, including 10-night cruises to Italy, Croatia, and Montenegro and 12-night journeys around Turkey and the Greek Islands. Most of our Eastern Mediterranean cruises spend only a day at sea, giving you plenty of time to explore the region in depth.

Our Ports of Call At a Glance

Barcelona, Spain - Catalonia’s capital shines like a polished jewel. A cornucopia of architectural highlights line broad, tree-lined boulevards. Enticing seafood restaurants embellish a well-groomed port. Half a millennia separate Barcelona’s two great cathedrals, the massive Gothic structure in the Bari Gotic and Gaudi’s stunning and still unfinished Sagrada Familia. Full of life is the Paseig de Gracia with its fantasy architecture, shops and colorful street scenes.  Our EXCLUSIVE Package Includes - a tour of Barcelona, entry/visit into the Sagrada Familia, transfers, hotel accommodations, and breakfast.

Palma (Majorca), Spain - On the one hand, this city, founded by the Romans some 2,100 years ago, is replete with (literally) wall-to-wall history and architectural splendor. You can journey back in time and wander the mazes of alleyways and cobblestone paths that surround the Gothic cathedral. On the other hand, Palma is bustling with life, showcasing the island’s best restaurants, shops, nightlife and a vibrant art scene.

Cannes, France - Drive up Suquet Hill for a view of the city, sea and Lerins Island - fabulous dahling! How many rich and famous can you spot, walk the palm-lined promenade de la Croisette and count. The French Riviera at its best...the International Film Festival calls this home.

Livorno (Florence/Pisa), Italy - Livorno, in the Tuscan region of Italy, is ideally located for exploring some of the most beautiful cities in Italy, including Florence and Pisa. Florence is most noted as the birthplace of the Renaissance.  Of course this is the home of one of Michelangelo’s masterpieces, the Statue of David.  Don’t miss the Duomo’s magnificent baptistery doors, and the Uffizi Gallery’s collection of artistic masterworks. Nearby is Siena, showplace of Italian Gothic; and Pisa, with its famous Leaning Tower.

Rome, Italy - Civitavecchia is the gateway to all the magnificence of the ancient city of Rome. Whether it’s the Forum, the Sistine Chapel, the Pantheon or St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican that sparks your interest and intellect, Rome is home to a lifetime’s worth of historical, architectural and spiritual sites.  Our included tour today is going to include the very best of Rome including tour of the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and Vatican City with St. Peter’s Basillica.  This truly is the tour you want and need to take if going to Rome!

Naples/Pompeii, Italy - Naples is the perfect jumping off point for the jewels of the Amalfi Coast. Take a jetfoil ride to the cliffs of Capri, where you can float into the Blue Grotto or ascend to Anacapri to drink in the view. Tour eerie Pompeii in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Wind along the Amalfi Drive through a resort-dotted dreamscape to Sorrento. The vistas are worth every hairpin turn.

Messina (Siciliy), Itlay - The third largest city on the island of Sicily, Messina welcomes cruise ship visitors with its lovely harbor, extraordinary architecture and wonderful food. Stroll through Messina’s Piazza Cairoli taking in magnificent fountains and cathedrals, or sip Marsala wine at a sidewalk cafe.

Valletta, Malta - Although somewhat scarred by World War II, Valletta prides itself on its magnificent Baroque palaces, piazzas, gardens and churches. The Magisterial Palace, built between 1571 and 1574, now houses the Maltese Parliament and offices of the President of Malta.

Corfu, Greece - One of the lushest of the Greek Isles, Corfu is rimmed in dramatic blue waters and topped with tranquil hillside villages. A collection of quaint cafes in the town of Corfu feels very continental, but the island’s secluded coves and sandy beaches could only be found in the Greek Isles.

Dubrovnik, Croatia - Despite the magnificent 13th century walls that surround the city, Dubrovnik is one of the most welcoming cruise destinations in all of Europe. Dubbed “the pearl of the Adriatic” by the poet, Lord Byron, this Croatian city exudes romantic charm and beautiful scenery with its shimmering marble streets, centuries-old buildings capped by bright orange roofs, and lovely beaches ensconced between awesome rocky ledges.

Split, Croatia - This Mediterranean city on the eastern shores of the Adriatic has a long and eventful history dating back to the awesome Diocletian’s Palace (circa 295 A.D.) in the center of the city. Split offers cruise guests a wealth of exciting places to visit, from the majestic cathedral and marble streets in the center of town to the harbour area with its caf-lined promenades and views of coastal mountains.

Venice, Italy - You could start a discussion about Venice by praising its restaurants, wine bars, marble churches or blown glass. But you probably won’t. You’ll likely start with the fact that Venice is built on water. It is a place where people either float slowly down palace-lined man-made waterways or stroll down narrow alleyways. There’s no more extraordinary place to find yourself, or lose yourself.  Our EXCLUSIVE Package Includes - a tour of Venice, transfers, hotel accommodations, and breakfast.

THE NORWEGIAN ESCAPE - Get ready to sail on one of the most exciting ships on the seas! Norwegian Escape is ready to whisk you away to the Mediterranean in style. The weather in the Mediterranean Sea in May can be quite warm, so you’ll want to pack plenty of lightweight, breathable clothing. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Dresses: A lightweight dress is perfect for a day of sightseeing or exploring a new city. Choose a dress that’s made from a natural fiber, such as cotton or linen, and that has a loose fit. You can dress up a dress with a pair of sandals or wedges, or dress it down with a pair of sneakers or flats.
  • Shorts: Shorts are another great option for daytime wear in the Mediterranean. Look for shorts that are made from a lightweight fabric, such as denim or chino, and that have a relaxed fit. You can pair shorts with a T-shirt, tank top, or blouse.
  • Tops: A T-shirt, tank top, or blouse is a versatile option that can be dressed up or down. Choose a top that’s made from a lightweight fabric, such as cotton or linen, and that has a loose fit. You can layer a top with a cardigan or jacket if the weather cools down.

  • Don’t forget your swimsuit! You’ll want to pack a swimsuit that you feel comfortable wearing and that’s appropriate for the activities you’ll be doing.

Clothing for the Beach

What to wear on a Mediterranean cruise in May?

The Mediterranean climate is mild in May, with average temperatures ranging from 65F to 75F. The weather can be unpredictable, however, so it’s important to pack a variety of clothing options.

Dress in layers. You’ll likely be comfortable in a light sweater or jacket in the morning and evening, and shorts or a skirt during the day.

Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing a lot of walking on your cruise, so make sure your shoes are broken in and comfortable.

Pack swimwear. You’ll want to have a swimsuit or bathing suit on hand for swimming in the pool or ocean.

Don’t forget your sunscreen. The sun can be strong in the Mediterranean, even in May. Make sure to pack sunscreen and reapply it throughout the day.

Here are some additional tips for packing for a Mediterranean cruise in May:

  • Pack light. You won’t need as many clothes as you would for a cruise in a colder climate.
  • Pack versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched.
  • Don’t forget to pack a hat and sunglasses.
  • If you’re planning on visiting any religious sites, pack a pair of modest clothing.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 5 things I wish I'd known before sailing in the Mediterranean.

  • I've been on 50 cruises around the world and took my first Mediterranean route last year.
  • Picking the right time of the season to go can make a big difference in your trip.
  • Before packing, I always check to see if any of the experiences I've booked have a dress code.

Insider Today

As someone who's taken over 50 cruises all over the world, I know firsthand how popular cruising is this year. But one seabound itinerary people often forget to add to their bucket lists is a Mediterranean cruise .

The dreamy ships take passengers around European destinations like Spain, France, Italy, and Greece.

After taking my first Mediterranean cruise last year, here's what I think everyone should know before booking the route.

Going early or late in the sailing season means fewer crowds and better weather.

med cruises in may

Many cruise lines, like Virgin, Celebrity, and Disney, start the Mediterranean season in early spring and sail through early fall.

Going early or late in the season usually means you'll have more tolerable weather and smaller crowds in some of the big destinations like Athens .

I made the mistake of going on my Mediterranean cruise at the end of May (over Memorial Day weekend).

Some ports of call, like Nice, France, were easy to get around, but others like Rome were packed to the gills. I wanted the day to end before we even made it to the Vatican on our tour.

Arriving at your embarkation port early is key to having a smooth sailing.

med cruises in may

My biggest tip for any cruise — but especially for Americans traveling to Europe for a Mediterranean cruise — is to arrive at your embarkation city at least a day before your sailing starts.

This gives you plenty of time to ensure you make it to the port, especially with the airline delays that typically spike in the summer. The boat isn't going to wait for you i f you don't land on time

Even though it means paying for lodging and likely a few meals before boarding the boat, getting a good night's sleep before a jam-packed vacation is worth it to me.

As a bonus, arriving early also gives you a chance to explore the city.

Be sure to pack at least one shirt with sleeves and bottoms that cover your knees.

med cruises in may

Some of the major European tourist destinations have strict dress codes — typically everyone must at least cover their shoulders and knees out of respect.

If you're planning on checking out Vatican Ci t y in Italy or the Meteora monasteries in Greece, b e sure to pack at least one outfit that fits the bill.

Most cruise ships have laundry services (self-serve or valet), so you can wear the same dress-code-approved outfit for a few excursion days if needed.

Food tours are a great way to see a city, taste local dishes, and learn some history.

med cruises in may

If you're looking for a unique excursion that still gives you the highlights of a European city, I recommend booking a food tour . I've done tours in places like Amsterdam, Budapest, and Paris, and I've never been disappointed.

Food tours can be booked through third-party travel operators, like TripAdvisor or Viator, and offer the chance to see some of the major landmarks of a city, try local dishes, and learn some history all in one outing.

The tours are usually led by locals, which means the guides can also give you some good recommendations if you have time before you need to return to the ship.

Consider booking tours through third-party sites.

med cruises in may

Mediterranean cruises can last anywhere from seven days to two weeks, depending on the company and itinerary. Booking every excursion through the cruise line can add up, but luckily, there are typically more affordable options through third-party companies.

But I only book with third-party operators if the ship docks right at the city I want to explore because I never want to miss the all-aboard time.

For example, on my Mediterranean cruise last summer, the ship anchored at Cannes, and I was able to keep my eye on it throughout my excursion.

If the ship docks in a secondary location and you have to travel to the big tourist destinations , I always book excursions through the cruise line. For instance, the day my family and I explored Rome, the ship docked in Civitavecchia, Italy, and we had to take a two-hour bus ride into the city.

Booking with the cruise company guarantees your return to the ship, even if your excursion runs late.

Wondering what to pack on a Mediterranean Cruise? You’re in the right place!

As a travel advisor and cruise specialist, one of the most frequent things my clients ask is “What should we pack for our cruise?”

Embarking on a Mediterranean cruise is an exciting adventure, filled with picturesque ports, ancient ruins, and captivating experiences. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable voyage, proper packing is essential.

It’s tempting to pack EVERYTHING you “might” need but keep in mind you’ll likely be flying to your embarkation city, so you will need to think about baggage fees, weight limits, and your ability to carry your luggage.

You also need to consider the fact that you’ll have to be transported from the airport to your hotel and then to the port, having too much luggage can make it really hard to get up and down narrow streets, hallways, and staircases.

The golden rule of cruise packing is to lay out everything you think you need, and then put half of that away!

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll provide you with the ultimate Mediterranean cruise packing list, covering everything from clothing and accessories to travel essentials.

So, let’s set sail and get ready to explore the stunning Mediterranean region!

Mediterranean Sea

Cruise Ship Essentials

When packing for a Mediterranean cruise, it’s important to consider the unique features and activities offered onboard. Don’t forget to include these must-have items:

  • Passport : Be sure it’s valid, doesn’t expire for at least 6 months after your cruise, has at least 2 empty pages and the name matches your cruise documents EXACTLY.
  • Visa:  This is not always necessary, but check with the countries you will be visiting to be sure, some, like Russia, have very specific requirements for visitors.
  • Boarding Pass  for Cruise and Airline:  Most of the time you can use the apps, but I like to have a hard copy with me just in case.
  • Travel Insurance Policy Paperwork : I strongly recommend travel insurance that covers medical care in foreign countries.  It is not very expensive and is good peace of mind.  Keep in mind the insurance you purchase through the cruise line is usually just for your cruise fare, and is not comprehensive enough.  I like to use  Travel Insurance Master  to get free quotes on Travel Insurance, they make it easy to compare a few policies side by side.

➡️ Check Prices on Travel Insurance by Clicking Here

  • Excursion documents:  It’s a good idea to bring hard copies of any tickets, instructions, or other information that your excursion company has sent you.
  • Printed Luggage Tags:  After you have checked in, your cruise line will have luggage tags available for you to print out.  These will show your cabin number.  The exception to this is Disney Cruise Line.  They will not let you print them out but will mail you your luggage tags instead.  Don’t attach your cruise luggage tags until after you’ve gotten off your last flight and are ready to board the ship.
  • Credit Card:  Be sure and tell your bank that you are traveling so they don’t decline your transactions.

➡️ I like to use these plastic luggage tag holders to keep my tag secure and safe from tearing off

Supplemental items to bring on a Mediterranean Cruise

  • Cruise Ship Lanyard : Keep your keycard handy and accessible at all times. Most cruise lines provide you with a keycard that unlocks your cabin door, allows you to make on-board purchases, and identifies you as you exit and return to the ship.  I like to bring an  inexpensive lanyard  to help me keep track of my keycard.
  • Day Bag : A lightweight and versatile bag to carry your essentials during shore excursions. You likely will not have access to your cabin when you board your ship, so having a carry-on bag is a great idea.  Pack it with a swimsuit, sunscreen, a book, and any medication you might need to get you by until your luggage is delivered in the evening.
  • Theft Proof Wallet or Purse : In busy areas, trains, and markets, you can be susceptible to pickpockets and theft.  I love to wear a cross-body purse (fanny pack or money belt) to keep my essentials close to my body.  This is a good one! ⤵️

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0BZ92HTD4&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

  • Toiletry Bag:  Pack travel-sized toiletries, including sunscreen ( reef safe ) , shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and any personal medications. There will be body soap, shampoo, and conditioner on board, but if you are picky like me, bring your own in small bottles. Don’t forget  lotion   and chapstick for after a day in the wind and sun!
  • First Aid Kit : Include band-aids, pain relievers, motion sickness medication, and any other necessary medical supplies. While you can purchase most things on board, they will be super expensive.  I spend $12 on a bottle of eye drops last year!
  • Guide Books:  I like to carry a guidebook with me when I travel to look up things as I go.
  • Packing cubes : These may seem silly, I get it. For years I refused to buy them because I thought they were dumb.  Can I tell you how obsessed with them I am now? I freaking LOVE these things! They make my bags stay so organized, and keep me from overpacking too! These are my favorites ⤵️

Clothing and Accessories for a Mediterranean Cruise

Choosing the right clothing and accessories will ensure you’re comfortable and well-prepared throughout your Mediterranean cruise. Consider these items:

  • Formal Nights : Most cruises have formal dinners, so bring elegant evening wear, such as a cocktail dress or a suit and tie. Normally, on a 7-night cruise, there are 2 formal nights, you can check with your travel advisor to be sure.
  • Casual Attire : Pack lightweight and comfortable clothing suitable for daytime activities onboard and during shore excursions. Think shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and lightweight pants. If you are  cruising the Mediterranean in the fall,  be sure and bring layers for cool evenings.
  • Socks and underwear:  Even if you are planning on wearing flip-flops most of the time, be sure and bring a few pair of socks.  Bring underwear for every day, and a few extras in case you want to shower and feel fresh mid-day after being in the humidity.
  • Swimwear : Don’t forget to pack your favorite bathing suit for relaxing by the pool or enjoying beach days at the various ports. I like to bring 2 so that I can always have a dry swimsuit to put on.  You can hang them to dry on the clothesline in your shower. Don’t forget a bathing suit cover-up to wear as you go to and from the pool to your cabin.
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes : Opt for sturdy and comfortable walking shoes for exploring ports of call and enjoying onshore excursions.
  • Flip Flops : Perfect for lounging by the pool or strolling on the ship’s deck.  I also like Chacos  for hikes near water and rocky beaches.
  • Lightweight Jacket or Sweater : Even during the summer months, evenings at sea can get breezy, so pack a lightweight jacket or sweater.
  • Accessories : Remember to bring sunglasses, a hat, and a reusable water bottle.

Destination-Specific Items to Pack on a Mediterranean Cruise

The Mediterranean region is rich in history, culture, and diverse landscapes. Consider these destination-specific items based on your ports of call:

  • Ancient Ruins : If your itinerary includes ancient ruins like Rome’s Colosseum or Greece’s Acropolis, comfortable shoes are essential for exploring these historical sites.
  • Religious Sites : When visiting religious sites such as cathedrals or mosques, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful. Packing a lightweight scarf is a good idea if you are visiting the Blue Mosque in Istanbul.
  • Beach Days : If you plan to enjoy the beautiful Mediterranean beaches, pack a beach towel, water shoes, and a beach bag. While you can borrow a beach towel from your ship, they are often bulky and heavy, I prefer to bring my own  quick dry, lightweight towel .
  • Local Currency : Carry some local currency for small purchases or in case credit cards are not accepted everywhere. You can stop at an ATM at the airport to exchange currency.

Cruise Line and Theme-Specific Items

Different cruise lines and themes may have unique requirements or activities. Consider these additional items:

  • Formal Attire : Check your cruise line’s dress code for formal nights and pack accordingly. A dark suit or evening gown may be required.
  • Theme Nights : Some cruises may have theme nights, so pack costumes or accessories to join in the fun.
  • Cruise Line-Specific Items : Check your cruise line’s website for any specific recommendations or restrictions.

Electronics to pack for a Mediterranean Cruise

  • Phone/charger
  • Portable Charging Bank
  • Go Pro/ Charger/ Memory Card
  • Curling iron/flat iron
  • A power strip (not surge protector)

Toiletries to pack

  • Toothbrush/paste/floss
  • Daily Medications
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Shampoo and Conditioner
  • Hairbrush/ Hair ties
  • Deodorant ( I love Lume for all-over body deodorant )
  • Shaving Cream/ Razors
  • Feminine Hygiene Products
  • Makeup remover
  • Nail Clippers/File
  • Seasick bands or meds (I like Bonine, but ginger also works)
  • Poopurri (Cabins are small, and you will thank me later!)

Conclusion:

With this comprehensive Mediterranean cruise packing list, you’ll be well-prepared for a memorable and stress-free voyage.

Remember to adapt the list to your specific needs, destinations, and cruise line requirements. By packing smartly and including the essentials, you’ll be ready to explore ancient cities, soak up the sun on stunning beaches

Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.
