MIDNIGHT OIL Add Busselton date to national tour

After multiple COVID setbacks, Midnight Oil have been making up for lost time this year with a stack of international dates, but can’t wait to bring it all back home for shows across Australia. “The shows we’ve just done overseas have been some of the best and most enjoyable of our career,” said Midnight Oil guitarist/keyboardist, Jim Moginie . “Every gig on this last tour has had extra emotion around it so we’re looking forward to bringing those feelings back home again.”

“From the opening track on our first album through to the last song on our new one, we’ve always been blessed to have fans who are really passionate about what we do,” said drummer Rob Hirst . “We’ve all shared an amazing journey together, so we want to celebrate that by playing something for everyone in places that feel special.”

Barnard park, busselton wa, midnight oil’s final tour ‘resist’ is coming to busselton this september long weekend.

Midnight Oil ’s RESIST has become the band's fifth ARIA #1 Album as they kick off their Final Tour in support of the acclaimed release.

From the northern beaches of Sydney to the streets of Manhattan, Midnight Oil has stopped traffic, inflamed passions, inspired fans, challenged the concepts of “business as usual” and broken new ground. In 2017 the band returned from a 15-year hiatus for their Great Circle World Tour which encompassed 77 shows in 16 countries. The extraordinary audience and critical response to those shows led to more European dates and an Australian outback gig in 2019, which then flowed into the recording sessions where RESIST was created. The album’s much-anticipated release will, therefore literally close the circle on this chapter of a truly extraordinary career.

The band also announced that this will be their final concert tour. It will see them performing classic Midnight Oil songs from across their repertoire while also showcasing some urgent new works. They will be joined in Busselton by special guests  Regurgitator .

Midnight Oil announce final dates of farewell tour in Sydney and Melbourne

The band will perform 1982 album '10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1' in its entirety at two shows next month

Midnight Oil have announced four new shows in Sydney and Melbourne, marking the last dates to be added to the final stretch of their  farewell tour .

Two of the newly added shows will see the band perform their fourth studio album, 1982’s ’10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1′, in full, nearly 40 years after it was released. The band had originally announced plans for the special show – a Melbourne-exclusive benefit to raise funds for environmental causes – in March, but were forced to cancel due to health issues being faced by drummer Rob Hirst.

Instead, the band will celebrate the album – which featured hits like ‘Power And The Passion’, ‘US Forces’ and ‘Read About It’ – at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on September 12, and at Luna Park’s Big Top in Sydney on September 28.

Midnight Oil have also announced a pair of shows that will feature extended sets drawing from every album and EP across the band’s lengthy career. Those will take place at the Palais Theatre on September 14, and at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on October 3. The latter show will be the last on Midnight Oil’s ‘Resist’ tour, thus bringing an end to the band’s touring career.

Tickets for all four of the new shows go on sale next Monday (August 22) at 10am local time, with pre-sales for Frontier Touring members and those signed up to Midnight Oil’s mailing list kicking off this Thursday (August 18). A portion of proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to environmental and Indigenous causes.

“We’ve always supported causes that we believe are important during our tours so these four extra gigs are partly a way of doing that,” Garrett explained in a statement. “They will allow the band and the audience to have a different experience each night by digging deep into the back catalogue in venues that are a bit smaller than the ones we’ve usually been playing in over recent years.”

Hirst added that the new shows are Midnight Oil’s way of acknowledging the “connection over 45 years” between the band and their fans. “We’ve all shared an amazing journey together, so we want to celebrate that by playing something for everyone in places that feel special.”

The final leg of Midnight Oil’s tour will kick off this week at the Mundi Mundi Bash in Broken Hill. Rescheduled gigs are set to take place in Cairns, Darwin, Busselton, Swan Valley and Canberra, along with a performance at Stompem Ground festival in Broome. Tickets for the Busselton gig will go on sale at the same time as the four new shows, while tickets for the other shows are on sale now.

Midnight Oil Announce Special Final Shows Of Tour

10-1 album to be played in its entirety in Sydney and Melbourne

Since Midnight Oil’s new album Resist debuted at #1 early this year, the legendary Australian band has toured around Australia, North America, and then Europe, on their last concert tour. The final leg of this epic run kicks off this week at the Mundi Mundi Bash near Broken Hill followed by rescheduled gigs in Cairns, Darwin, New Zealand, Perth and Canberra to make up for various climate and Covid disruptions earlier this year. In addition, this final leg will include shows at Broome’s Stompem Ground Festival (after a 20 year hiatus) and a new WA gig in Busselton (see below for all details).

Today, the last four dates of this tour were revealed with Midnight Oil announcing two uniquely intimate extra shows in both Melbourne and Sydney. A portion of proceeds from each of these new gigs will be donated to environmental and Indigenous causes and general public tickets will go on sale 10am local time on Monday 22 August via: frontiertouring.com/midnightoil

Melbourne will finally experience Midnight Oil playing their classic album 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 in its entirety at the Palais Theatre on Monday September 12 under the banner One For The Planet . The band had originally announced this special idea for a benefit show back in March, but Covid got in the way so, like their other cancelled gigs, they are now making good on that earlier promise.

Two nights later, on Wednesday September 14, the Oils will play a final show at the Palais under the banner One For The Road . This extra Melbourne date will see the band performing the entire show (ie: no support) and delivering an extended set that will include classics from every Midnight Oil album and EP across their storied career.

Sydney will experience these same two special shows a few weeks later, as RESIST: The Final Tour ends with a bang back in the band’s hometown. One For The Planet (featuring “10-1” in its entirety) will be staged at the Luna Park Big Top on Wednesday September 28. “We’ve always supported causes that we believe are important during our tours so these four extra gigs are partly a way of doing that” , explains frontman, Peter Garrett. “They will allow the band and the audience to have a different experience each night by digging deep into the back catalogue in venues that are a bit smaller than the ones we’ve usually been playing in over recent years.”

“From the opening track on our first album through to the last song on our new one, we’ve always been blessed to have fans who are really passionate about what we do” , observed drummer Rob Hirst. “One For The Planet” and “One For The Road” are our way of acknowledging that connection over 45 years. We’ve all shared an amazing journey together, so we want to celebrate that by playing something for everyone in places that feel special”.

Midnight Oil Announce Special Final Shows Of Tour

‘ 10-1′ album to be played in its entirety in Sydney and Melbourne

Since  Midnight Oil ‘s new album  Resist   debuted at #1 early this year, the legendary Australian band has toured around Australia, North America, and then Europe, on their last concert tour. The final leg of this epic run kicks off this week at the Mundi Mundi Bash near Broken Hill followed by rescheduled gigs in Cairns, Darwin, New Zealand, Perth and Canberra to make up for various climate and Covid disruptions earlier this year. In addition, this final leg will include shows at Broome’s Stompem Ground Festival (after a 20 year hiatus) and a new WA gig in Busselton (see below for all details). 

Today, the last four dates of this tour were revealed with Midnight Oil announcing two uniquely intimate extra shows in both Melbourne and Sydney. A portion of proceeds from each of these new gigs will be donated to environmental and Indigenous causes and general public tickets will go on sale  10am local time  on  Monday 22 August  via:  frontiertouring.com/midnightoil  

Melbourne will finally experience Midnight Oil playing their classic album  10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1  in its entirety at the  Palais Theatre  on  Monday September 12  under the banner “One For The Planet”. The band had originally announced this special idea for a benefit show back in March, but Covid got in the way so, like their other cancelled gigs, they are now making good on that earlier promise.  

Two nights later, on  Wednesday September 14 , the Oils will play a final show at the  Palais  under the banner “One For The Road”. This extra Melbourne date will see the band performing the entire show (ie: no support) and delivering an extended set that will include classics from every Midnight Oil album and EP across their storied career. 

Sydney will experience these same two special shows a few weeks later, as “RESIST: The Final Tour” ends with a bang back in the band’s hometown. “One For The Planet” (featuring “10-1” in its entirety) will be staged at the  Luna Park Big Top  on  Wednesday September 28 . 50 years, thirteen studio albums, thousands of shows spread over more than twenty countries. The tales of a band called Midnight Oil will be told for generations to come.

For a journey that started on the Northern beaches of Sydney, it was suitable that the final show would be in that same town, but for it to be at the iconic Hordern Pavilion, instead of a stadium or arena, says a lot about how the band wanted to go out as a live act.

There was a nervous energy amongst the crowd and a fleeting “Oils!” chant, but the early start meant that we weren’t waiting long for them to get into it and the entry of the band, with the four core members, plus touring bassist Adam Ventoura, was without fanfare - but this is nothing new. The band don’t look to be anything more than they have always been. Honest, simple and powerful.

There were a variety of themes that flowed through the set, but one link that brought everything together. ‘Country’. From the gorgeous Welcome to Country, to the opening song, Lucky Country, to the many more references throughout the night, it was clear how much this land, so-called Australia, means to the whole band. With patriotism being dangerous in the wrong hands, Peter Garrett is careful to present the love of his country in a way that ensures everyone is included in his vision. One country for everyone.

“It’s going to be a very beautiful, sweet and long night!” declared Garrett early. With a huge window of time to perform, they were always going to dive into the catalogue and this meant performances of tracks that had not been in the set for years. Used And Abused from their debut record was second on the list but contained a small break as Peter Garret broke up a scuffle in the crowd. “Go to the back and find some NRL players, they’ll like that!”, announced a cheeky but clearly annoyed Garrett.

I’m The Cure , from their 1980 Bird Noises EP had not been performed live since 1984 (according to setlist.fm ) and Koala Sprint and Common Ground were welcome additions to the set, especially with drummer Rob Hirst seen to be screaming out the lyrics to the latter in joyous strains. The first real goosebump moment came during Is It Now? as the bridge kicked in and Garrett screamed the title of the track and showed a glimpse of what it must have been like in those small pubs in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The group even explored their ‘surf-rock’ past with a few Narrabeen favourites, including Surfing With A Spoon , another deep-cut that delighted the ravenous audience.

The band were deliciously on form, especially with the dancing guitar of Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey in a number of tracks, a combination that has stood the test of time. The addition of Ventoura, who announced during the show that he’d learnt 94 tracks from the back catalogue, was welcome as he drove so many of their songs with aplomb, including the second big goosebump moment – the bass line from Stand In Line - another huge highlight of the night.

In between every few songs, Garrett was sure to throw in some anecdotes and reminisce about their past. “Three dollar nights” at your local pub for gig night, AC/DC references and Bondi Lifesavers were all mentioned  - “You’re too old if you remember that!” he laughed. The fact that everyone has a Midnight Oil story is testament to the impact that the band have always had with their audience.

A fleeting, but powerful appearance from Dan Sultan on Gadigal Land was the only real surprise of the night, guest-wise. Despite collaborating with a great number of artists over the years, it was fair to say that tonight was about the group just doing what they do, rather than bringing the bells and whistles.  Leah Flanagan who spent the night teaming up with Liz Stringer on the backing vocals also joined in for the song that resonated throughout the home crowd.

So many lyrics were poignant reminders of what the Oils are all about. “ Beauty, love, and compassion ” from Nobody’s Child , an adjustment of the lyrics in Progress to “ 25 Million, I can't hear you at all ” and the eponymous “ This is something I will remember ” from Hercules. Midnight Oil lyrics have become a part of everyday vernacular including from Beds Are Burning,  which still feels as important today as it ever has been - “ To pay the rent, to pay our share ”.

As the clock ticked over three and a half hours, the crowd were starting to wonder how it would finish. How does a band like Midnight Oil round out their live careers? The second encore would deliver two of their biggest in The Dead Heart and Power And The Passion with the latter feeling like it could have been delivered as the final blow, but the theme of ‘country’ returned with a suitably beautiful rendition of One Country , a track that felt like it could have ended things on a more sombre tone.

To constant cheers and applause, they walked off, but again the crowd chanted.

Again, we wanted one more. Just one more.

As they always have, they once again delivered. Forgotten Years would become the song that rounded it out - the song that closed the chapter on one of the best bands Australia will ever produce and their staggering 40-song set.

The songwriting, this time from Rob Hirst and Jim Moginie, sums it all up eloquently. “ These should not be forgotten years. ” Midnight Oil will never be forgotten, but neither should their legacy and what they’ve been working so long to achieve. For now, let’s remember them however we choose to do so, because everyone has an ‘Oils’ story and they should always be told.

As the house lights came on, we blinked a few times and applauded once more, not quite believing that it really was all over.

Midnight Oil’s Final Tour Secures Epic List Of Supports

Midnight Oil fans are gearing up to see the iconic Australian rock group tour for the final time this month, supporting their forthcoming album  Resist .

This week, a slew of epic Australian artists have been announced as support acts at various points on the national run. Everyone from the Hoodoo Gurus to Goanna ; Jack River to William Crighton; Amyl and the Sniffers to Emily Wurramara are getting on board for this momentous tour.

While Midnight Oil have enjoyed a return to live performances and new music in recent years,  Resist and its accompanying tour cycle is reported to be the last for the Oils. Through their press reps though, the band’s remained steadfast in promising fans that this doesn’t mean the end of the band; they remain ‘open’ to working together in the future.

When it comes to where you can be seeing these talented artists opening for the Oils, let’s break it down.

Country-rock artist (and one of the best voices you’ll hear) William Crighton will be opening things up in Newy and Wollongong this February. Busby Marou and Emily Wurramara will be your opening acts for the Oils show in Orange. New South Wales, as well as in Darwin down the line in April.

Speaking of Busby Marou, the duo will be supporting Midnight Oil in Brisbane, with Wurramara also set to perform alongside Jack River as Oils supports in Canberra in April. Jack River will perform two other support shows, taking place in Adelaide and on the Sunny Coast.

The Sunshine Coast also welcomes fellow Aussie rock icons Goanna to the lineup, as will the tour stop in Geelong, where they join All Our Exes Live In Texas and Stephen Pigram. And for All Our Exes Live In Texas, they’ll also be performing at the Oils’ Rutherglen winery show with the Hoodoo Gurus.

Elsewhere on the tour bill, Amyl and the Sniffers will open for Midnight Oil in Melbourne, while 2021 breakthrough artists King Stingray will appear at Cairns and Sydney dates.

Midnight Oil Announce Final Shows With Added 10 to 1

With Midnight Oil returning for their final Australian shows, more have been added including some special 10 to 1 shows playing the entire ’10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1’ album in its entirety.

The 10 to 1 shows dubbed ‘One for the Planet’ will benefit environmental causes. Dates are 12 September in Melbourne and 28 September in Sydney.

The One for the Road shows will feature an extended set of Oils music from every era. Those dates are 14 September in Melbourne and 3 October in Sydney.

Aussie legends Midnight Oil will quit touring after new album Resist and a run of Antipodean dates

Aussie rock legends Midnight Oil have announced that their next tour will be their last. The band will release a new album, Resist , in the new year, and undertake a final run of Antipodean dates to support it. 

The tour kicks off with a previously announced appearance at the Mona Foma festival in Launceston, Tasmania, on January 23, and concludes at the Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand on May 13. Full dates below.

“We all know time refuses to stand still for anyone but after many years together the band’s spirit is deep, the music and words are strong, and our ideas and actions as bold as we can make them," says frontman Peter Garrett. "We’ve reached people in ways we never could have imagined. Our desire to create and speak out is undimmed. 

"We hope everyone who hears this album and gets to one of the shows will come away charged up about the planet’s future, saying ‘why stop now?’. Having always tackled every tour like it’s the last – this time it actually will be."  

While the tour will be the band's last, they haven't ruled out working together in the studio, with a statement on the band's website revealing, "Each of the members will continue their own projects over the years ahead. They remain very open to recording new music together in future and supporting causes in which they believe."

Resist is the first music to be released by the band since the death of bassist Bones Hillman last year, from cancer. Hillman plays on the new album. 

Tickets for the tour will go on general sale on December 1 , while the album can be pre-ordered from 12:01am AEDT on Tuesday November 30.

Oils album tops oz charts & band announces o/s shows as final tour commences.

Midnight Oil’s RESIST has become the band’s fifth ARIA #1 Album as they kick off their Final Tour in support of the acclaimed release. More shows will follow around Australia over coming months and limited tickets are available for some gigs. 

It was also announced today that the tour will head overseas in June/July for newly announced dates in North America and Europe including some of the world’s most iconic venues like The Hollywood Palladium, Toronto’s Massey Hall, Hammerstein Ballroom in New York and The Roundhouse in London. That leg will culminate at Paris’ greatest concert hall, L’Olympia. Tickets for those shows will go onsale over the coming week. Dates are listed below and fans are advised to only buy tickets by following the links at  www.midnightoil.com/tour .

The #1 debut matches the achievements of 2020’s THE MAKARRATA PROJECT , 1990’s BLUE SKY MINING and their 80’s classics DIESEL & DUST (1987) and RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET  (1984) and RESIST   has attracted some of the best reviews in the Oils’ storied career. For example:
