1. Hakuba Valley Ski Resorts

Located at the northern end of the Japanese Alps, about two-and-a-half hours from Tokyo, Hakuba Valley receives an average annual snowfall of 11 meters.

The resort extends about 30 kilometers and there are 10 unique resorts contained within it, each with its own character.

The spectacular beauty of the mountains loom over you and makes for an epic backdrop to your adventures. There is a lot of backcountry skiing opportunities as well as some great terrain for all skill levels.

After you’re done hitting the slopes, you can soak in hot springs and enjoy some excellent food from many different kinds of restaurants. There are also rentals available at their ski shops located throughout the resort.

Hakuba Valley is very crowded in peak season. It’s also very spread out, so expect to spend a lot of time in shuttles. A single lift ticket will cover all of the smaller resorts in Hakuba Valley .

2. Shiga Kogen Ski Resort

The excellent intermediate slopes at Shiga Kogen Ski Resort are among the best in Japan. The ski trails offer some great opportunities for all levels, though very advanced skill levels may get bored sooner rather than later.

This is a very Japanese resort, which means it has limited nightlife and you can expect not to hear all that much English.

There are, however, English group ski lessons available here, which is not common. Most of the shops and restaurants are part of the “villages”, and there are not very many.

Most of these villages are quite spread out. If you’re looking to explore the area, this is the closest resort to the famous Japanese snow monkeys.

Shiga Kogen offers a resort experience that is decidedly Japanese, with plenty of great trails, while still being manageable for non-Japanese speakers.

3. Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort

When someone thinks of skiing in Nagano , they should plan a trip to Nozawa Onsen , one of the top ski areas in Nagano Prefecture.

This hot spring and ski resort is a charming village resort that immerses you in its unique atmosphere. There are many hot springs to be found here and steam rises up everywhere as you wander the cobblestone streets.

Nozawa Onsen is a cultural experience, big enough to explore for a week of vacation. While not the most impressive Nagano ski resort for serious athletes, it offers a few in-bounds and side-country areas with fairly steep terrain, a rare find in Japan. Besides, here you can also experience a fire festival !

There are group lessons in English, as well as child care and a children’s snow play area, making it a great place for families to visit.

Keep in mind that the accommodations are very traditionally Japanese, so it’s a bit more sparse and less private than most western accommodation. Expect to be eating only Japanese food for the duration of your stay, as well.

4. Sugadaira Kogen Snow Resort

An excellent resort for beginner skiers and snowboarders, Suadaira Kogen offers all the basics and more. There are several different lodgings available and many dining facilities, as well as an on-slope restaurant.

There are no English group lessons here, so some familiarity with Japanese would be good for anyone hoping to learn the skiing and snowboarding basics here.

The resort has three main areas, so expect to spend some time on the shuttle if you want to enjoy the resort to its fullest.

5. Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort

Located about an hour from Tokyo, this resort makes use of advanced snow-making techniques to make sure it opens every year. The view of Mount Asama , an active volcano is impressive from the resort.

The resort has some very good beginner and intermediate trails, as well as a terrain park for freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Every year, the ski season begins from November.

Besides the slopes, there is plenty of food and shopping options as well as lodging available at the resort. The resort is relatively compact compared to many others, which means that you won’t be spending too much time on shuttles, but may mean that you could run out of activities on resort grounds during your stay.

6. Myoko Kogen Ski Resort

Here you can find one of the largest ski areas in Japan. It is completely coated in snow throughout its winter season.

Any skier or snowboarder of any skill can find the right trail for them with perfect powdery snow. Group lessons in English are available and much of the staff speaks at least some English.

While there are a wide range of restaurants, there is little to do here except hitting the slopes.

The resort appears a bit more run-down than many others, but that does mean it retain a sense of authenticity occasionally missing at other resorts. It also means it is much less crowded than those other resorts.

7. Kita Shinshu Kijimadaira Ski Resort

This small resort has some very steep terrain, which is unusual in Japan, making it great for more advanced skiers and snowboarders. It is located close to many other resorts, which is a good thing, as it is fairly bare-bones by comparison.

This resort is not ideal for families, but it is a decent choice for those looking for a more serious skiing experience and who are open to going to other resorts.

You can hop on the The Hokuriku Shinkansen from Nagano Station and get off at Iiyama Station (12 minutes ride). From Iiyama station, take a shuttle bus or a taxi to the ski resort.

8. Madarao Kogen Ski Resort

This bowl-shaped Japanese ski resort offers trails for many different skill levels, with most of them being suited for intermediate skiers and snowboarders. There are 22 separate courses to be found here and some excellent powder across the whole resort.

There is a lot of accommodation for English-speakers and you can get English ski lessons here, but it does not feel as westernized as many resorts. It is also relatively uncrowded.

Madarao Kogen (Madaro Mountain Resort) is fairly quiet, though there are more and more bars and restaurants to be found as it becomes slowly more popular. Hotel rooms and lift tickets are cheap.

You can always visit the nearby town of Iiyama . There is a snow park, snow tubing, and sledding available for kids. It’s a good, uncrowded choice for families.

The modern-day Nagano City was originally a temple town which grew around the great Zenkoji Temple , one of Japan’s most important Buddhist temples. Founded in the 7th century, the temple stores Japan’s oldest buddha statue which was brought into the country in the 6th century. To the west of the city, Togakushi Shrine complex opens up a pathway to Japanese mythology while the nearby Kids Ninja Village offers great fun for families with young children. Major Nagano ski resorts including Hakuba and Shiga Kogen are connected with Nagano City via frequent buses, making this a popular day trip destination.

For riders based in Hakuba, take the chance to visit Matsumoto City, an hour south of the resort. There you will find Matsumoto Castle , Japan’s oldest surviving castle tower dating back to the 16th century. Art lovers should not miss Matsumoto City Museum of Art where a Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition is on permanent display.

8. Winter attractions

Winter is an excellent time to visit Nagano, not only for its amazing ski resorts but also for various fascinating winter attractions.

There’s a good chance that you have heard about Japan’s snow monkeys who love to bathe in hot springs in the winter, and guess where is the best place to see them? None other than Nagano, specifically at Jigokudani Monkey Park ! Shiga Kogen is the closest resort to the park, being only 10km away, but you can visit the park with ease from other resorts as well. If you are into festivals and find yourself in Nagano in mid-January, head north to Nozawa Onsen to observe the majestic Dosojin Fire Festival and join the locals to pray for good fortunes and dispel the evil spirits. Hakuba also has its own Happo Fire Festival in mid-February, featuring a torch run, traditional taiko drum performance, fire dance, and fireworks. 

If onsen is your favourite post-ski activity, you are in for a treat! You will find incredible natural hot springs at most Nagano ski resorts, giving you the opportunity to rejuvenate after a long day on the slopes whilst enjoying the grand mountain views. Nozawa Onsen has the highest concentration of onsen with more than 30 natural hot springs and 13 public baths. Do note that most of the onsens here are very traditional, therefore you might not be able to enter if you have tattoos. Hot springs in Hakuba are more open to tatted skins and you can find at least one in every resort in Hakuba Valley .

Over 80 ski resorts sit high in the mountains surrounding Nagano. Most visitors base themselves in one of the following 4 regions:

• Nagano City
• Hakuba Valley

Nagano City is too far from the ski fields to hit the slopes each morning with ease. Nonetheless, it’s worth overnighting to explore the city’s numerous exciting attractions.

Matsumoto is a small city to the south of Nagano and a great base for skiers wishing to hit the Nomugitoge or Kisofukushima ski resorts. Don’t miss the spellbinding Matsumoto Castle.

The Hakuba Valley is a large ski area about 44 km west of Nagano. Popular with locals and foreigners, it has good nightlife and a vast variety of runs.

East of Nagano, Yamanochi is a sprawling mountain region with a wide range of resorts. It’s also a convenient base to see the famous Snow Monkey Park.

How to rent skis and purchase a lift pass in Nagano?

With so many competing ski resorts, it’s crucial to choose the right pass. Most sell one-day or multi-day passes, either online or through their ticket office. Research your resort of choice carefully before committing.  

The Hakuba Valley Elevator Pass gives you access to all 10 regional resorts and lasts anywhere from 1 to 14 days. The deal typically includes rest days – for example, you can ski 6 days in a 10-day period. Individual day passes are also available. Purchase your pass from a travel agent or the Hakuba Base Camp.

Myoko-Nagano and Rhythm Japan offer equipment hire throughout the Nagano region and may be able to drop your skis off at your hotel. Many accommodations, resorts, and local outlets also rent gear.

And to the west, Togakushi Temple is a series of 5 ancient shrines connected by a path beneath towering cedar trees. If you pass through Matsushiro, don’t miss the magnificent Matsushiro Castle , an impressive recreation of a 16 th -century citadel. 

Families should pencil in a visit to the Kids’ Ninja Village , a fun-filled theme park with interactive ninja stars and blow-dart games. Kagami Ike Pond is a picturesque place to picnic or hike.

Nagano Meijitei specializes in hearty Katsudon, a delicious crumbed pork cutlet dish served with rice, vegetables, and eggs. Swing by Tsukiji-Nihonkai for scrumptious sushi, sashimi, and miso soup. 

Over on Mount Togakushi, Uzuraya is a serene soba noodle haunt that does sublime crispy tempura.

A wide array of restaurants cater to hungry skiers in each resort. However, the alpine dining scene isn’t as sophisticated as in Hokkaido.

Nagano is a top spot to shop, whether you’re after everyday essentials or traditional souvenirs.

Midori Nagano is the city’s premier mall. Located inside the train station, this enormous modern megaplex has a broad range of boutiques and stores. Even if you don’t want to buy anything, take the time to meander Gondo Shopping Street. As Nagano’s main pedestrian thoroughfare, the indoor arcade has rows of shops and izakaya (informal bars).

For a spicy souvenir, pop into Yawataya Isogoro Main Store . This landmark spice shop sells sesame, masala, and some seriously strange ice cream. The store sits on Zenkoji Omotesando , a famous Nagano street full of galleries and handicraft stalls.

Nagano has thriving nightlife for a city of its size, hosting everything from intimate little lounges to booming late-night bars.

For a civilized daytime drink, head to Nishinomon-Yoshinoya and sip artisanal sake. Staff offer informative brewery tours, and there’s a leafy garden for extended tasting sessions – try the plum wine.

Music and Bar Fame is a hit for its happy-go-lucky vibe and live DJ performances incorporating anime and video game tunes. For a raucous live music venue, Nagano Club Junk Box is a grungy underground spot with a lively clientele. Should you fancy a tipple in Matsumoto, GNU does heady Redbull and tequila cocktails in a moody, minimalist lounge.

Most of the outlying ski resorts feature high-altitude bars. But again, the alpine nightlife here isn’t as rowdy as in Niseko.

Snow Monkey Park

Home of nagano’s furry inhabitants.

Snow Monkey Park is home to a curious troop of Japanese macaques that come to bathe in its mineral-rich hot springs. Also known as Jigokudani Monkey Park, the site resides in Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, a lush conservation area established to protect their natural habitat. As the monkeys flourished, a few cheeky creatures began copying humans they saw bathing in an outdoor onsen (hot spring) – monkey see, monkey do.

Two hiking trails (10 or 30 minutes) meander through a verdant forest before arriving at the site. The best time to see the spectacle is winter when thick snow blankets the scene. While the monkeys are accustomed to their human onlookers, it’s best not to bring any food.

How to Get to Nagano

Factual travel information.

Nagano Station is the city’s main gateway, offering convenient connections to numerous Japanese destinations. The Nagano Shinkansen Asama (bullet train), for example, takes just 90 minutes from Tokyo.

Another option is to catch a flight to Shinshu-Matsumoto Airport . From there, Nagano Snow Shuttle runs buses to the main ski resorts and central Nagano. The company also connects Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports, as well as downtown Nagano, with the major ski resorts.

If you plan on visiting numerous ski resorts in the region, invest in renting a automobile or joining a multi-resort tour . Public transportation will be sufficient to get you to and around a single ski resort.

The local bus and train system in Nagano City is fast and efficient. Taxi cabs are widely available, but the fares can add up fast.

Looking for a snow season holiday that won’t take you far from Japan’s major capital? Nagano and Niigata are the twin sister-cities of snowy fun on Honshu island, both very close to Tokyo.

Nagano has been known around the world as a must-ski, must-snowboard destination since it hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics. From the rolling slopes perfect for families to the challenging runs ideal for snow-venturers, Nagano is well equipped to provide world-class holidays for any visitor.

Of course, an essential element of any snow holiday is the relaxing after an athletic day on the slopes. The diversity of Nagano’s 85+ ski resorts means that every taste is catered for, be it hot springs or onsen, an array of dining options, or fun nightlife. Naturally, no trip to Nagano is complete without a visit to the beloved Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, another popular tourist activity where you can see Japanese macaques frolic about in hot springs.

They say the original is the best, which means Niigata has a claim at being the number one snow destination in Japan. The charming prefecture is the birthplace of skiing in Japan, where Austrian soldiers taught locals the art in 1911. Since then, Niigata has been a mecca for recreational skiers and later, snowboarders as well, seeking incredible snow and stunning scenery. With over 50 ski resorts to choose from only 70 minutes from Tokyo, there’s no reason not to visit Niigata on your snow season holiday to Japan.

With such snow-centric activities in Niigata, you can also expect a variety of cultural events every season. Niigata holds the annual Tokamachi Snow Festival which features a spectacular fireworks show that lights up snowy mountains and sculptures, as well as the infamous ‘Son-in-law Throwing’ event based on traditional Japanese customs (don’t get any ideas, visiting Fathers-in-law!).

Home to ten ski resorts, more than 200 runs and ten metres of seasonal snowfall, Hakuba is a skier’s heaven.

• JR Narita Express (N’EX) from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station (60 minutes, 2,820 yen).
• JR Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Nagano (80 – 110 minutes, 8,000 yen).

The above route is fully covered by both the JR Pass and JR East Pass (Nagano, Niigata area).

Nozawa Onsen

Founded in 1930, Nozawa Onsen Snow resort is the oldest in Japan. Stand in the middle of the village and you can see hot steam rising all around you. After a day on the slopes, take a dip in one of the 30 natural hot springs and soak up the traditional atmosphere.

Shiga Kogen

Shiga Kogen is located in Joshin-etsu National Park and is blessed with high quality powder snow, similar to that of Hokkaido. The largest single resort in Japan with 19 interlinked ski areas, it caters for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.

Myoko  is located just an hour north of Nagano city and boasts more than 19 metres of snow annually across 9 mountains. Myoko offers something for all skiers.

Tsugaike Kogen (Hakuba Region)

Tsugaike kongen ski resort is a large-scale ski resort which is located in Otari village, 7km north of Hakuba. It has 156 ha terrain, 20 lifts and spread across 904 meters of elevation(800-1,704m) . Since the lower part of the mountain consists of the gigantic beginners slope, it acquires the reputation as "Qween of beginner's slope". Officially 50% of the slopes of Tsugaike are dedicated to beginners. The main wide lower areas of Tsugaike are particularly suited to beginners, such as Kane-no-naru-oka slope which has more than 1200m width and Karamatsu slope which has a super gentle slope with 1200m length.

Furthermore even beginner can enjoy near the peak by taking gondola, since there is a beginner slope near the gondola peak station. After enjoying this slope, beginners can down by gondola in peace. At the base near the "Kane-no-naru-oka" there is a kid's park with magic carpet and free indoor play area.

Hakuba Cortina(Hakuba,Otari)

Hakuba Cortina ski resort is located in Otari village, 10 km north of Hakuba. Being located in the northern part of Hakuba region, it receives relatively more and better snow than other resorts in the area. It offers a variety of beginner slopes. Out of the 16 courses, there are five beginner courses and two intermediate courses. The recommended courses for beginners are the Hiedayama forest slope and the Ikenoda slope, with a combined length of nearly 3500 m. From the Hiedayama forest course, one can enjoy panoramic mountain views and the beautiful forest ambience, while the Ikenoda slope is a wide and gentle course in front of the hotel and ski center.

In front of the main slope, a western style ski-in,ski-out hotel—"Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba," offers comfortable rooms and access to Onsen (hot springs).

Hakuba Goryu(Hakuba)

ABLE Hakuba GORYU is located in Hakuba village in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture. Goryu is a medium-large scale resort which has 16 courses, a vertical drop of 926m (750m -1,676m), and longest distance of 5,000m.The Alps-daira zone is the upper part of the resort accessible by gondola with attractive beginner and intermediate course. In this zone you can enjoy majestic views of big mountains and dry powder snow, SInce it has gentle slopes, even beginners can enjoy the beautiful experience. After that beginners can go down by the gondola. At the base area such as Toomi-area and Iimori-area there are also wide, gentle slopes for beginner. Hakuba Goryu is interconnected with Hakuba 47 and beginner can visit there via beginner slopes.

Nozawa Onsen(Nozawa,Togari)

Nozawa Onsen is located in the northeast region of Nagano Prefecture in Honshu (main land), close to the border with Niigata Prefecture. It is the 4th largest ski resort in Japan, which has 20 lifts, 36 courses, an area of 297 ha. Nozawa Onsen offers a plenty of slopes ideal for beginners, and most of them are really wide and gentle. The most recommended point is that there are gentle slopes running through the mountain top area. For example, major beginner slope Uenotaira is located at altitude of 1,220m - 1,410m. Because of the high elevation, the snow quality is much better than base area. These terrains are very wide and gentle, beginners can fully enjoy the powder snow and the panoramic view.After skiing beginner can head down via forest trail. Alternatively, skier can take the gondola to go down to the base of the mountain.

Hikage slope is the main base area which has a lot of functions for the kids such as "kids park", "day care service", "children rest area", etc.

Togari Onsen(Nozawa,Togari)

Togari Onsen ski resort is located in the northeast region of Nagano Prefecture, to the west of Nozawa Onsen. It is the medium sized ski resort , which has 7 lifts, 18 courses, an area of 130ha. The size of Area is almost same as Hakuba Goryu/47. It is the 6th largest in Nagano Prefecture. Togari offers a variety of slopes for all level skiers from beginner to expert. It’s beautiful! The Japanese architectural details are so lovely. I learned a lot about the hotel and the design. The history of furniture in their family. The husband and wife who run Shioriya are so kind and welcoming. They went above and beyond. It was truly a great place to stay. I started my day smiling with them every day.

Backpackers 1166 is around a 5-minute walk from Zenko-ji Temple and close to many shops, restaurants and cafes. A 24-hour convenience shop is a 5-minute walk away, while JR Nagano Station is a 7-minute drive or 18-minute walk. Togashi Ski Resort and Iitsuna Kogen Ski Resort are each a 40-minute drive.

The hosts are so extremely nice, made me feel like I just went to a friend's house, thank you so much for that. The fact that we could leave our luggage there outside of the checkin checkout period was extremely helpful since we traveled a lot between cities and walked a lot. They were also very helpful when it came to questions about the travel spots and responded quickly each time. The place itself is cozy, there is a lounge area and even a working area. The bathroom is shared, but there were no problems with that. And it was clean and had enough ammentities. If you are not a fan of smaller towels, maybe bring your own, and pajamas as well. The dormitory was enough for moving around freely, even if we were 5 people inside, and the bunk beds have their own curtains and plugs. There are heaters in the house, and we didn't have any problems with feeling cold in January. It is very close to the zenkoji temple, and has a bus stop 2 min away, as well as a nagaden train station 10 minutes away. The area itself is an older part of the town, and it's a pleasure to walk around the streets. 10/10 recommended 👌 🥰

While staying at Ryokan Oshi, guests can enjoy a range of activities like golfing and skiing . The property provides ski storage and ski equipment rentals. Luggage can be left at the front desk. JR Nagano Station is a 50-minute drive or bus ride away, and the Togakushi Hokousha Bus Stop is just a 1-minute walk from the property. Togakushi Ski Resort is a 15-minute away, while Nagano Country Club is within a 10-minute drive.

We had a wonderful experience at the ryokan. The rooms were clean, very comfortable, and the owner was very kind and helpful. I highly recommend this place.

The location of the house was in a residential neighbourhood in the suburbs of Nagano city, so it was very quiet and quite safe. Access to the house was quite easy from Kirihara station (approx. 7-10 minutes on foot). The house itself was spacious, the kitchen was well equipped, and the futon beds were comfortable. The owner was very friendly and helpful (he spoke English and Italian on top of Japanese), and as he is a wine connaisseur and importer, we were also able to buy and taste some excellent wines during our stay. The owner also provided us with coffee, herb tea and apples (locally grown).

Property nestled amongst countryside neighborhood with lush apple orchards and grape fields. Kids most welcomed with BBQ available, his Tokyo cat also most adorable. All amenities provided including english labeling, laundrymat, stocked fridge, kitchen pots/sink(!)

1, JIGOKUDANI MONKEY PARK-Looking to lovely Snow Monkey!-

Jikokudani Monkey Park (地獄谷野猿公苑) is only one spot in the world that we can look at monkeys who take an Onsen (hot spring). There is the park in Yamanouchi town in the north area in Nagano prefecture. 2, HAKUBA VALLEY

10 ski resort in Hakuba (白馬) is collectively called Hakuba Valley. There is a Hakuba valley in the foot of the Northern Alps in the North area of Nagano. Hakuba Valley is an international mountain resort After this area was used as a place of Nagano Winter Olympic in 1998.

3, SHIGA HIGHLANDS

Shiga Highlands (志賀高原) is a magnificent ski resort in winter. Ski areas are connected by a useful shuttle bus service. It is famous for the skier that Shiga-Kogen’s snow quality is great! By the way, Shiga-Kogen Plateau was entered as a Biosphere Conservation Area (UNESCO Eco Park) by UNESCO. There are an original ecosystem and society and beautiful landscape. We can enjoy Shiga-Kogen Plateau all years.

4, SHIBU ONSEN

Shibu Onsen (渋温泉) is in Yamanouchi town. There are many resources of hot spring around the town. So, visitor can experience various kinds of an effect of hot spring to body and mind. One careful point, Shibu Onsen is a little bit high-temperature of the bathtub, you need to be careful when entering a bathtub. You must shower before entering the bathtub.

5, BESSHO ONSEN

Bessho Onsen (別所温泉) is in Ueda city. There are two famous temples in Bessho Onsen.

1, Kitamuki-Kannon (Tenmple)

Kitamuki Kannon was built in 825. It is rare that the main temple face to North in Japan. There is a Bessho Onsen area. Kitamuki Kannon set with Zenkoji temple in Nagano city. If you can visit Zenkoji temple, you will get a fortunate opportunity.

2, Anraku-Ji (Temple)

Anrakuji is a famous temple in Nagano and Japan. Anrakuji is one of the oldest temple in Zen Buddhism. The temple building is “Mokuzo Hakkaku Sanzyuu no To”. This mean is Wooden Octagonal three-story pagoda. When you visit this pagoda, I recommend that you wear comfortable shoes. Because there is the pagoda on the small mountainside.

6, NOZAWA ONSEN

Nozawa Onsen (野沢温泉) is a famous ski and snowboard resort and Onsen (hot spring) place. There are thirteen public baths (Sotoyu 外湯) that is managed by the local Onsen community. Visitors can enter all Sotoyu. We recommend around thirteen Sotoyu. In addition, Onsen egg is well known as a local product in Nozawa Onsen. Let’s try eating Onsen egg! Access is from Tokyo station to Iiyama station by the Hokuriku Shinkansen. There is many hotel and guesthouse, we recommend Ryokan Sakaya.

7, TENRYU-RIVER RIVER CRUISE

Tenryu river cruise (天竜川川下り) is really exciting tour! Tour company offer a 6km boat ride from Benten Harbor to Tokimata Habor in 35 minutes. This tour usually that you need to reserve a seat. But actually, except the winter season, individual visitors can take part in the tour without reservation if there are seats available. It is an interesting adventure that a visitor can experience a river adventure in the winter season! In addition, passenger take a Japanese Kotatsu in a boat.

8, TAKAMINE PLATEAU ONSEN（HOT SPRING）

Takamine Plateau (高峰高原) is in Komoro city in east area in Nagano prefecture. The area is altitude 2000 meter, so visitors can feel “Above the clouds”. Especially, “Unjou no Rotenburo (An open-air bath above the clouds)” is famous as one of the most beautiful Rotenburo in Japan. On the other hand, visitors can try snow trekking.

9, IIYAMA SNOW FESTIVAL

Iiyama Snow Festival (飯山雪まつり) is a big event in Iiyama city. Every year this festival is held two days in February. There are many snow dorms, snow sculptures, Lanterns in the festival place. On the other hand, visitors can take part in the “snow sculpture walk rally”. Let’s look at the art of snow in Iiyama city!

10, KARUIZAWA PRINCE SHOPPING PLAZA

Karuizawa(軽井沢) is known as a holiday home area located in the west area of Nagano. You can enjoy skiing, walking around a calm road.

Recently many foreign tourists have visited Karuizawa for vacation. Karuizawa Prince shopping plaza is one of the biggest shopping malls in Nagano. This is located in front of the Karuizawa station. There are so many shops, restaurants, and events.

The most important information is about a sale. You can buy many Japanese goods for a happy new year sale in January.

I visited Togakushi in the first week of April and would like to share some details on getting there and what to expect.

From Nagano's train station, the bus to Togakushi departs from platform 7, which is not in the terminus when you exit the station building, but you need to cross the street and turn left at the Don Quiote store. The stop is right in front of Alpico's sales office, where you can buy a ticket from the vending machine (1550 yen).

The bus departs roughly every hour so you need to plan your day very carefully. The distances between the upper and lower shrines is quite far, although still walkable, but there are no defined sidewalks so you are walking on the side of the road. More on why you can't take the trails a bit later.

I wanted to start at the upper shrine and make my way downhill, so I rode all the way to Okusha, which takes about an hour. What surprised me was a thick layer of snow still on the ground despite it being no-jacket weather at the train station. It wasn't cold but during the first week of April, the snow was still melting and had a long way to go.

The walk into the first gate was not easy as the path has not been cleared, and there was a warning sign to not to continue further past the cedar tree avenue up to the shrine. If you were to brave this section, bring some poles and very sturdy hiking shoes as the uphill parts are steep and slippery with the thick layer of melting snow and ice covering up the path. The shrine itself wasn't open. It's a tough and hard journey!

The path to the pond was also invisible in the snow so I headed back to the main road. Missing the downhill bus by 5 minutes, I made the 2km walk down to Chusha, noticing the path from the main road into the pond was also closed due to winter conditions. At Chusha, there are a few soba restaurants to enjoy lunch. At the tourist info centre, it lists the names of such restaurants.

This is the main shopping part of the temple area. From here, it's roughly another 2km downhill to Hinomikosha and Hokosha, after which you can then take the bus back to Nagano station (slightly cheaper).

This itinerary took about half a day, with delays due to the snow at Okusha. The downhill temples were all green and snow-free.
