Nick Cartell Les Miersables

Nick Cartell stars at Jean Valjean in the North American tour of "Les Miserables," playing at the KeyBank State Theatre in Playhouse Square Oct. 7-30.

  • Joey Morona, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When the producers of “Les Miserables” were looking for a city to relaunch the North American tour of the iconic musical, they decided on a place where the show has been 11 times before.

Cleveland’s Playhouse Square.

“Being the first city to put this blockbuster musical back on the road is a testament to the passion, dedication and size of our Broadway audiences in Cleveland,” says Playhouse Square President and CEO Gina Vernaci. “We are thrilled to be working once again with Cameron Mackintosh and his brilliant team.”

Now after a two-and-a-half year hiatus due to the pandemic and six weeks of rehearsals, the cast and crew are ready for the curtain to finally rise. Performances start at the KeyBank State Theatre on Friday with opening night set for Oct. 12.

“I am so eager. I think that the entire company is so eager to get back on stage,” says Nick Cartell, who plays the lead, Jean Valjean, in the show, which kicks off the KeyBank Broadway Series and runs through Oct. 30.

Created by Mackintosh in 1985 and restaged into its current form for its 25th anniversary in 2009, the show is one of the most beloved musicals of all time. Based on Victor Hugo’s epic novel and powered by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s sweeping score, Les Miz has been seen by 130 million people worldwide. Set in 19th-century France, the narrative is centered around Valjean as he looks to start a new life after spending 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread.

“It’s the story, it’s the music. It’s a show that really touches people’s hearts, especially after what the world has gone through over the last couple of years with this pandemic,” says Cartell. “If there is a show that truly speaks to this kind of survival of the human spirit, it’s Les Miz.”

But it’s the characters that Valjean encounters and the diverse cast of actors who play them that keep the show relevant, too.

Les Miserables North American Tour

Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed production of Boublil and Schönberg’s "Les Miserables" opens the 2022-23 KeyBank Broadway Series at Playhouse Square. The musical runs Oct. 7-30 at the KeyBank State Theatre.

There’s Fantine (Haley Dortch), a poor, single-mother desperate to provide for her child; Cosette (Addie Morales) and Marius (Gregory Lee Rodriguez), a young couple who finds love in a hopeless place; Eponine (Christine Heesun Hwang) and Enjolras (Devin Archer), revolutionaries determined to change their circumstances; and Javert (Preston Truman Boyd), the police inspector whose pursuit of Valjean is guided by his devotion to the rule of law over compassion.

“You see characters that are fighting for a better world and audiences connect with that,” Cartell says. “It’s so thrilling to see a younger cast really embrace this musical and take it on and fill it with their own emotions and their own feelings.”

The actor says the cast refers to Hugo’s rich text as a bible, an invaluable resource that informs their performances and helps bring the characters to life.

“I really like how our directors Laurence Connor and James Powell harken to the book. They want to make sure that the story of these characters that’s in the book is being told on stage,” he says.

Of course, a musical is only as good as, well, its music. Boublil and Schönberg’s score is lush and powerful. Herbert Kretzmer’s lyrics are brilliant and beautiful. You hear the songs and they never leave you. Remember when George couldn’t get “Master of the House” out of his mind on an episode of “Seinfeld?” This is that times ten.

“Haley Dortch, who is our Fantine, her rendition of ‘Dreamed a Dream’ is simply stunning,” Cartell says. “Preston Boyd singing ‘Stars’ as our Inspector Javert is one of those true moments in musical theater that will make you stop breathing for a second.”

Preston Truman Boyd Javert Les Miserables

"What I love that Preston does is he truly gives Javert a humanity that sometimes can get lost in other productions," says actor Nick Cartell of Preston Truman Boyd, his co-star in "Les Miserables."

Indeed, the show is full of those kinds of moments. “One Day More” will inspire you. “On My Own” will break your heart.

“And I get to sing ‘Bring Him Home’ every night,” Cartell says. “It’s my favorite moment in the show.”

Les Miz fans who saw him as Valjean the last time the musical played Cleveland might notice a subtle difference in his performance. Credit that to Sullivan, his young daughter who was born during the pandemic.

“Now that I’m a dad, there are certain lines in this show that hit so differently than they did last time,” he says. “There’s one line that I have to sing at the very end of the show, which is, ‘She’s the best of my life.’ And if that doesn’t hit me every single night and send goosebumps up and down my spine.”

If you don’t feel something during “Les Miserables,” maybe check your pulse. Because it’s hard to not get caught up in the emotion of the high-stakes drama and riveting score. But unlike the original stage production, this version doesn’t rely so heavily on sheer spectacle to enhance the effect. Gone is the revolving stage, replaced by digital projections that showcase Hugo’s own paintings. The result is an experience that feels more grounded, intimate, and, for longtime fans, fresh.

“If you’ve seen it before, you’re going to love it again,” Cartell says. “And if you haven’t seen it before, then you’re going to fall in love with a brand new show that is epic, enduring and what I think is one of the true classic musical theater pieces out there.”

“Les Miserables” is playing at the KeyBank State Theatre, 1519 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Oct. 7-30. Tickets, $29-$129, are available at playhousesquare.org .

Theater Review: LES MISÉRABLES (National Tour)

Post image for Theater Review: LES MISÉRABLES (National Tour)

DON’T MIZ IT

Unlike most of the characters in the blockbuster sung-through musical  Les Misérables , the show itself will never die. Consistently presented either on Broadway, national tours, and globally since the English-language version opened on the West End in 1985, audiences can’t get enough of Victor Hugo’s story about ex-con and do-gooder Jean Valjean and his righteous long-arm-of-the-law pursuer, Javert. With a speedy 3-hour running time, the rousing anthems, heartbreaking ballads, delicious characters right out of Dickens, and compelling storytelling—from Valjean’s paroling to the Paris Uprising of 1832—prove that modern audiences and millennials do indeed have an attention span if the material is great.

After that awful movie adaptation, another Les Miz found itself on Broadway in 2014. The National Tour which relaunched October 7 and opened last night at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa is a sleek new revival based on that production, the national tour of which was cut short by COVID in 2020. With dozens of roles, many of them major, and 30+ ensemble members, all of whom must sing spectacularly while negotiating hundreds of costume and wig changes, Les Miz is not an easy venture to undertake (costumes by Andreane Neofitou , additional costume designs by Christine Rowland and Paul Wills ). This production directed by James Powell and Laurence Connor captures the revolutionary spirit in spades.

Designed by Matt Kinley (inspired by the paintings of Hugo), and projections realized by Finn Ross , Jonathon Lyle , and Fifty Nine Productions , the turntable and multi-media spectacle of Broadway have been expunged, but — especially with Kinley’s massive barricade and the amazing lighting by Paule Constable — it is no less effective.

Tara Rubin Casting has assembled the most important thing: singers. Some acted better than others, but the vocals blew me away, especially with Mick Potter ‘s sound design, which makes the acoustically troubled theater feel intimate. I heard most every lyric.

national tour of les miserables

The astounding Nick Cartell anchors the show as Valjean: His vocal abilities positively stunned with a powerful and resonant tenor, and his rendition of “Bring Him Home” was one of the most stirring on record — a lengthy and roaring ovation followed this poignant ballad (one of the few places in the show the audience gets a break to applaud).

national tour of les miserables

Other characters were portrayed as well as those on Broadway. Randy Jeter was the apotheosis of sanctity and strength as the Bishop who bestows silver candlesticks on Valjean as a way to keep him from a life of thievery. An impassioned and persuasive Devin Archer brought life to Enjolras, the leader of the revolutionaries with no backstory whatsoever (indeed, I don’t believe the character’s name is even mentioned in the show). Chicago actors Matt Crowle ( Gentlemen’s Guide.. .) and Cristina Rose Hall ( Wonderful Town ) wisely don’t go over the top as Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, lowlifes who make Fagin from Oliver  a candidate for Sainthood.

national tour of les miserables

Christine Heesun Hwang veered from that yodeling, pop-opera sound as Thénardier’s daughter Éponine, offering a lovely, straightforward teenager who is torn between unrequited love and a life of larceny. A real find was Henry Kirk as the Artful Dodger-like boy, Gavroche; it’s always thrilling to see a child actor powerful in voice who can do without cloying behavior. And as Valjean’s adopted daughter Cosette, who falls for the student revolutionary Marius, Addie Morales presented a clarity of tone that was astonishing. Haley Dortch as the good-girl-turned-prostitute Fantine (“I Dreamed a Dream”) scrunched three-hours of drama into her twenty-minute role, but wisely replaced that grand tortured-soul performance for damaged purity.

national tour of les miserables

Preston Truman Boyd has a booming voice and tall stature as Javert, but while compelling, he lacked character complexity. The only undistinguished performance came from Gregory Lee Rodriguez as Marius, the student revolutionary who falls for Cosette — he sounds fine and looks swell, but without dramatic intent, his songs didn’t always ratchet up to an emotional impact. His love songs, however, soar. And when he meets cute with Cosette, it’s a very winning moment. (Listen, spectators will have their own favorites in regards to characters and/or the actors portraying them; that’s yet another reason why people return and return again.)

Updating John Cameron ‘s original orchestrations, Stephen Matcalfe , Christopher Jahnke , and Stephen Brooker did wonders with a scaled-down 14-member orchestra (music supervision is by Stephen Brooker and James Moore . Credit for the vocals and band goes to Musical Director Brian Eads . With that damn terrific score brought to magnificence by Eads, it’s clear why Les Miz is, as the ad says, “Still the World’s Most Popular Musical.”

national tour of les miserables

But the stars of the show really are creators Claude-Michel Schönberg (music), Herbert Kretzmer (English language libretto based on original French lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel ), and James Fenton (additional material). And, of course, the adaptation by  Trevor Nunn  and  John Caird . These gentlemen may have truncated and in some ways bastardized Hugo’s novel, but there must have been Divine Intervention because they found the beating heart of the universal human journey: the search for love in a world of injustice.

Last year, when I was renewing my subscription to the Broadway in Hollywood series they offered an add-on of Les Miz. Having seen the show multitudinous times (London, Broadway, several tours) I decided I really didn’t need another trip to the French Revolution and didn’t get the tickets. Months later, once the show had opened at the Pantages, I was speaking to a friend of mine that works at the theater and he told me that this production of Les Miz ( now playing at the Segerstrom Center) was the best sung he had seen and that the production was amazing with a cast of over 30. This guy knows theater …so I broke down and bought a ticket. He was not exaggerating. The show was fantastic. Totally riveting. I was left breathless at the end. I immediately went and bought more tickets to one of the few remaining shows. I was disappointed I hadn’t discovered it earlier in the 2 month run so I could have seen it even more times. I highly recommend that if you live in Orange County or don’t mind the drive that you check out this Les Miz before it heads out of town. You’ll be happy you did!

'Les Misérables' National Tour in L.A.

Cameron Mackintosh’s much-loved production of Boublil and Schönberg’s “Les Misérables” has descended upon L.A., giving Angelenos their chance to hear the people sing at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre .

Purists won’t find any holes to poke in this air-tight national tour, which demonstrates a clear reverence for the beloved show’s storied history while delivering stunning, modern visuals and breathing new life into numbers like “A Heart Full of Love” with a healthy injection of humor.

Popular on Variety

Fans who have only seen the 2012 film adaptation with Russell Crowe’s painfully weak vocal attempt owe it to themselves to see Boyd perform Javert’s staggeringly difficult songs as they were meant to be heard: with precision, ferocity and conviction.

Other standouts in the powerhouse ensemble include Christina Rose Hall and Matt Crowle as the Thénardiers, who bring the house down with a raunchy, laugh-out-loud “Master of the House.” Addie Morales and Gregory Lee Rodriguez’s sweetly star-crossed lovers, Cosette and Marius, bring some much-needed hope and lightness the story — and it doesn’t hurt that their voices blend perfectly.

Of course, there’s still plenty to cry about (it is called “Les Misérables,” after all), and that’s where Christine Heesun Hwang’s Éponine and Haley Dortch’s Fantine shine brightest, showcasing spectacular belting abilities while languishing in the most tender moments of “On My Own” and “I Dreamed A Dream.”

“Les Misérables” runs through Sept. 10 at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre.

LES MISÉRABLES SYNOPSIS

PROLOGUE: 1815, DIGNE

After 19 years on the chain gang, Jean Valjean finds that the ticket-of-leave he must display condemns him to be an outcast. Only the Bishop of Digne treats him kindly and Valjean, embittered by years of hardship, repays him by stealing some silver. Valjean is caught and brought back by the police and is astonished when the Bishop lies to the police to save him. Valjean decides to start his life anew.

1823, MONTREUIL-SUR-MER

Eight years have passed and Valjean, having broken his parole and changed his name to Monsieur Madeleine, has become a factory owner and Mayor. One of his workers, Fantine, has a secret illegitimate child. When the other women discover this, they demand her dismissal.

Desperate for money to pay for medicines for her daughter, Fantine sells her locket, her hair, and then joins the whores in selling herself. Utterly degraded, she gets into a fight with a prospective customer and is about to be taken to prison by Javert when the ‘Mayor’ arrives and demands she be taken to the hospital instead.

The Mayor then rescues a man pinned beneath a cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength of convict 24601 Jean Valjean, who, he says, has just been recaptured. Valjean, unable to see an innocent man go to prison, confesses that he is prisoner 24601.At the hospital, Valjean promises the dying Fantine to find and look after her daughter Cosette. Javert arrives to arrest him, but Valjean escapes.

1823, MONTFERMEIL

Cosette has been lodged with the Thénardiers, who horribly abuse her while indulging their own daughter, Éponine. Valjean pays the Thénardiers to let him take her away to Paris.

1832, PARIS

Nine years later, there is unrest in the city because of the likely demise of the popular leader General Lamarque, the only man left in the government who shows any feeling for the poor. A street gang led by Thénardier and his wife sets upon Jean Valjean and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert, who does not recognize Valjean until he has gone.

The Thénardiers’ daughter Éponine, who is secretly in love with the student Marius, reluctantly agrees to help him find Cosette, with whom he has fallen in love.

News of General Lamarque’s death circulates in the city and a group of politically-minded students stream out into the streets to whip up support for a revolution.

Cosette is consumed by thoughts of Marius, with whom she has fallen in love. Éponine brings Marius to Cosette and then prevents an attempt by her father’s gang to rob Valjean’s house. Valjean, convinced it was Javert lurking outside his house, tells Cosette they must prepare to flee the country.

The students prepare to build the barricade Marius, noticing that Éponine has joined the insurrection, sends her away with a letter to Cosette, which is intercepted by Valjean. Éponine decides to rejoin her love at the barricade.

The barricade is built and the revolutionaries defy an army warning to give up or die Javert is exposed as a police spy. In trying to return to the barricade, Éponine is killed.

Valjean arrives at the barricade in search of Marius. He is given the chance to kill Javert but instead lets him go. The students settle down for a night on the barricade and, in the quiet of the night, Valjean prays to God to save Marius. The next day the rebels are all killed.

Valjean escapes into the sewers with the unconscious Marius. After meeting Thénardier , who is robbing the corpses of the rebels, he comes across Javert once more. He pleads for time to deliver the young man to the hospital. Javert lets Valjean go and, his unbending principles of justice having been shattered by Valjean’s own mercy, he kills himself.
