Bordering the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean, and once part of Gondwanaland, New Zealand has a fascinating natural and cultural history from its first Polynesian arrivals through European settlement, early sealing and whaling and world leading conservation efforts. SUPERIOR TRIPLE CABINS

Guests should make their way to the designated hotel where we will spend the first night of the expedition. This evening there will be an informal get-together at the hotel for dinner; an excellent opportunity to meet fellow adventurers on your voyage and some of our expedition team.

Today we enjoy breakfast in the hotel restaurant and have the morning free to explore Queenstown before returning to the hotel for lunch and departing for the Port of Bluff to embark Heritage Adventurer. You will have time to settle into your accommodation and familiarise yourself with the ship. You are invited to join the expedition team in the Observation Lounge and up on the Observation Deck as we set our course to Fiordland and our adventure begins.

We have two days to explore the incredible wilderness of Fiordland in the south-west corner of the South Island. This is an area rich in history, majestic scenery and abundant in wildlife. Fiordland was well known to local Māori, with the demi-god Tu-teraki-whanoa being said to have used his adze, Te Hamo, to carve out the region’s fiords. Captain Cook and his crew landed here on HMS Resolution in 1773, they were the first Europeans to visit Fiordland, subsequently spending five weeks in Dusky Sound. Cook’s records of his discovery and maps attracted sealers and whalers. Historically this region is very important and shaped the future of the country. Fiordland’s coast is only accessible by sea, making it the most remote region of New Zealand’s mainland. Waterfalls, streams, rivers, and fiords are enveloped with misty veils that come and go, revealing steep gradients of mountain peaks and sheltered valleys. A rugged terrain, the thickly forested floors are covered with ferns, lichens, and mosses. Bottlenose Dolphins, Fiordland Crested Penguins and Little Blue Penguins are all residents of the fiords; during our time here we will look for them. Our schedule gives us the flexibility to visit as much as possible, areas we plan to explore include Doubtful Sound, Dusky Sound and Acheron Passage, Astronomer’s Point and Pickersgill Harbour. During our time in Dusky Sound there will be the optional opportunity to experience an unforgettable helicopter flight through the Sound swooping down alongside Cooper Island and Cook Channel with a landing on Mt Pender where spectacular vistas across constellations of islands stretching into the horizon and dotting the winding fiords can be enjoyed. Our final plan will be determined by the weather. The Captain and Expedition Leader will work hard to make the best use of our time in this incredible region of New Zealand, including areas that a few New Zealanders have visited.

New Zealand’s third island is well off the usual beaten tourist track. It is a wonderfully tranquil place; the scenery of untouched bushland is stunning. We will enjoy a morning exploring Ulva Island which is rich in history and wildlife, being a predator-free island since 1997 the bird song and wildlife is some of the best. In Paterson Inlet you will have time to explore the sandy beaches of Boulder Bay and West End Beach or just enjoy some time around Post Office Bay and Sydney Cove. Some of the wildlife you may get to see while walking the tracks on Ulva Island include Stewart Island Robin, Stewart Island Weka, South Island Kaka, Kereru (Wood Pigeon), Mohua (Yellowhead), Red-crowned Parakeet, Fantail, Bellbird and Tui. There are many more species that may also be seen, our knowledgeable expedition guides will be listening for bird calls and keeping a close watch in overhead canopies and the surrounding shrubs to identify further species. During our time in Paterson Inlet there will also be the opportunity to explore the quirky town centre Oban in Halfmoon Bay where a drink with a view can be enjoyed at the iconic South Sea Hotel and there are some beautiful walks in the surrounding forests.

This morning sail into the beautiful Otago Harbour, watch closely for Northern Royal Albatross at the Tairoa Head Albatross Colony. From our berth at Port Chalmers explore the famed fashion-forward city of Dunedin, the Edinburgh of the south, and its rich history as the gateway to Otago. Explore the scenic Otago Peninsula where Sea Lions rest and Yellow-eyed Penguins can be spotted in one of their last mainland strongholds, and where the beautiful farmed hills roll down towards white sand beaches.

Heritage Adventurer will make her way through the Akaroa heads and anchor in the sheltered waters off Canterbury’s largest harbour. It was here, beneath the eroded volcanic hills of Banks Peninsula, that the French attempted to settle in 1840. The French connection remains to this day with a certain je ne sais quoi imbibing the township of Akaroa. This afternoon visit the Barry’s Bay Cheese Factory and French Farm Vineyard at the head of the harbour as well as enjoy the opportunity to explore Akaroa or take one of the local nature walks.

New Zealand’s ‘coolest little capital’, Wellington, is an exceptional natural harbour, where Heritage Adventurer will be docked in the centre of the action. From here you can easily explore this vibrant city on foot. Visit the cable car, explore the world renowned Zealandia nature reserve, discover the Botanic Gardens and visit Te Papa New Zealand’s national museum. on foot. Visit the cable car, explore the world renowned Zealandia nature reserve, discover the Botanic Gardens and visit Te Papa New Zealand’s national museum.

The spiritual home of Heritage Expeditions and one of the best, yet seldom-visited ports of New Zealand, join your naturalists to discover the incredibly beautiful coastal scenery of the Abel Tasman National Park or take the opportunity to discover the regions culinary delights, artisan crafts and world-class wines.

This morning Heritage Adventurer sails into the sheltered waters of the Marlborough Sounds, a beautiful labyrinth of waterways intersecting the northern shores of the South Island. Take the opportunity to ex-plore a coastal trail through the lush regenerating forest and watch for native birds including Saddleback, Parakeets and Robins on one of the island nature reserves.

The Art Deco capital of New Zealand, and possibly the world, the post-quake city of Napier lies at the heart of the thriving Hawkes Bay. Immerse yourself in the Art Deco world of central Napier with its quaint shops and unrivalled architecture before venturing to the world-renowned wineries of the Hawkes Bay famed for their exceptional Syrah and Chardonnay vintages. Alternatively, join your naturalists on a visit to the exceptional Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony.

Sailing up the scenic North Island, enjoy a day at sea attending lectures, relaxing on board or catching up on your photos and journaling as we head towards Tauranga.

From our berth in Tauranga, we drive inland, passing the rich horticultural region of the Bay of Plenty as we travel to the geothermal heartland of Rotorua. Marvel at the abundance of steam vents, geysers and bubbling mud pools as we explore one of the most geologically active regions on the planet accompanied by expert local guides.

This morning Heritage Adventurer arrives in Auckland, the City of Sails, where she will berth in the central city waterfront, following breakfast disembark and head to the airport or continue your exploration of New Zealand. In case of unexpected delays we ask you not to book any onward travel until after midday today.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Hiking Know-How

Although summer is the best time to visit New Zealand in terms of warm weather, it's also the busiest season for domestic and international visitors. This means less accommodation options and higher prices. The shoulder season of autumn is a better option, as you have the bonus of falling leaves, while spring is known for its unstable and windy conditions. If hiking is on the agenda, remember to pack quality hiking boots and layers, as some of the Great Walks have notoriously temperamental weather. A waterproof and windproof jacket will save you while cruising around New Zealand, particularly in the cooler months.

Australia and New Zealand: 10 Bucket List Stops on Your Cruise

Kia Ora is a local greeting, which translates to "Hello!". It is derived from the Maori language, where it's literal meaning is "alive" or "healthy".

As in Australia, tipping is not a New Zealand custom.

If driving in New Zealand, bear in mind the roads can by windy, narrow and hilly, so give yourself extra time to get from point A to B.

CUISINE Meats and Sweets

Like its neighbor Australia, New Zealand's national cuisine has British, Mediterranean and South Pacific influences. But it has developed its own sweet tooth, with a long list of cookies, candy and cakes that locals love.

New Zealand Traditional Dessert

EMBRACE YOUR SWEET TOOTH

New Zealander's sweet selection includes pavlova (a meringue cake with fruit toppings), Afghan and Anzac biscuits, hokey pokey ice cream (vanilla with honeycomb pieces), chocolate fish, Pineapple Lumps and lolly cake.

New Zealand Traditional Lamb Dish

KIWIS LOVE THEIR LAMB

One of New Zealand's biggest meat exports, roast lamb — seasoned with rosemary and served with seasonal vegetables — is served in many local restaurants. When you visit New Zealand, look for options that are locally raised and grass-fed for the best flavor.

New Zealand Fish and Chips

SEAFOOD ESSENTIALS

Satiate yourself on Bluff oysters, thought by many connoisseurs to be the world's best. Or try the country's British-inspired favorite, crisp-fried fish and chips with plenty of malt vinegar to cut through the richness. Top that off with savory whitebait fritters and green-lipped mussels in curry sauce with crusty bread.

New Zealand Cruises: the Ultimate Guide for a Remarkable Trip

Posted on Last updated: March 21, 2024

This island nation located off the eastern coast of Australia offers expansive bays, dramatic fiords, and a scenic coastline– perfect for exploration by hundreds of New Zealand cruises every year.

So grab one of our free cruise planners — equipped with budgeting help, daily itineraries, shore excursion planners, packing lists, and more– and stick around to learn about all the ins and outs of New Zealand cruises.

When is the Season for New Zealand Cruises?

Cruise lines most consistently visit New Zealand on their best New Zealand cruises between the months of early October to late April . This means that it can be pretty challenging to narrow down your choices as many cruise lines have dozens of New Zealand itineraries operating a month.

With so many must-see spots in New Zealand, the most popular months for New Zealand cruises are December, January, and February. This is when the temperatures are the most comfortable and enjoyable with sunnier days.

A handful of cruise ships visit New Zealand between May and September, with no New Zealand cruises operating during July (New Zealand’s first month of winter).

How is the Weather on New Zealand Cruises?

While spring, summer, and early fall in New Zealand on a cruise can be fabulous, you should always come prepared.

This means to pack various layers to stay comfortable on your New Zealand cruise. The average temperatures in the southern region of the country are vastly different than the weather you will experience at the northern end. For the best chances of warm and pleasant weather , plan your New Zealand cruise during the months of January and February.

It also  rains a lot in New Zealand , so make sure to bring your best rain jacket and umbrella. New Zealand has a high annual rainfall spread pretty evenly throughout the year. The weather on a New Zealand cruise can also change in an instant . Locals aren’t joking around when they say they sometimes experience all four seasons in one day!

When in the northern area of the country, you can expect subtropical weather during the summer, while the alpine areas of the South Island can reach as low as -10 Celsius. The average temperature gradually decreases as your New Zealand cruise travels south.

How Do I Plan a New Zealand Cruise?

If you have never been on a cruise before, you may have some questions about the logistics and how to plan your cruise .

First, you will want to get an idea of what your must-see attractions are. Most New Zealand cruises follow the popular itineraries of either departing from an Australian port, New Zealand-only, South Pacific Islands, and Repositioning cruises.

After you determine the itinerary you would like, then you need to focus on a specific cruise line for the best New Zealand cruise ever. Each cruise line offers a unique experience for every type of cruiser. Then, you can select a date with that perfect cruise line and itinerary to book and mark in your calendar!

I highly recommend booking a balcony or higher stateroom on your cruise ship as you will not regret waking up to the breathtaking New Zealand cruise landscape from your own private balcony. Also, make sure to avoid the loudest staterooms onboard to completely relax on your New Zealand cruise.

Once booked, you will receive access to more booking options like onboard packages, shore excursions, and stateroom upgrades . I highly suggest taking advantage of these pre-travel opportunities to have your vacation planned out before you leave on your New Zealand cruise!

What are the Different New Zealand Itineraries?

The majority of cruises visiting New Zealand are roundtrips from one of the popular Australian ports of Sydney and Melbourne. These New Zealand cruises tend to be more cost-effective, however, there are also opportunities to see New Zealand through cruising on longer voyages of 10+ days or shorter four night cruises.

NCL New Zealand Cruise

12 Day NCL Australia and New Zealand Cruise

Cruises from Australia

By far the most popular itinerary for New Zealand cruises are those leaving from Australia. Itineraries typically leave out of either Melbourne or Sydney , Australia on these New Zealand cruises.

The most popular of these cruises are roundtrip, including stops at the most popular New Zealand ports of Auckland, Wellington, Akaroa, Tauranga, and Dunedin . There are other opportunities for New Zealand cruises on longer voyages of 10 days or more that will explore further, less-visited ports like the Bay of Islands, Napier and Picton, and scenic cruising at the nearby Fiordland.

Some of these New Zealand itineraries will also tack on some Australian ports to your New Zealand cruise like Melbourne, Newcastle, and Hobart . Others will visit the popular South Pacific ports of Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia .

Cruise from Australia Reasons

Nature lovers, sports enthusiasts, and those who would just love to relax will fall in love with this itinerary. They all head out on New Zealand cruises for fishing charters, wildlife-watching trips, Lord of the Rings expeditions, trek hiking , and much more!

Book a stateroom overlooking New Zealand’s magnificent mountains, gushing waterfalls, rugged cliffs, fjords, and rolling hills. If you are looking for marine wildlife , you are in luck. You will more than likely spot an abundance of whales, porpoises, Royal Albatross colonies, yellow-eyed penguins, dolphins, and fur seals.

Shore excursions and onboard lectures are a must-do as they will go in-depth into the rich history of New Zealand. You will want to learn about the cultures of the indigenous people of New Zealand on your New Zealand cruise and about more recent inhabitants. The Maori culture found in New Zealand is one of the strongest in all of Polynesia and if you are a fan of the Lord of the Rings series, you will be far from disappointed.

Cruises from Australia Ports

The most popular cruises from Australia ports are Auckland, Wellington, Akaroak, Dunedin, and Tauranga . Most New Zealand cruises also pass by the breathtaking sights near Fiordland and Doubtful Sound .

A perk of New Zealand cruises traversing the ocean from Australia is calm waters . If you are prone to seasickness , this may be the itinerary for you, versus one that transits over open, rougher waters.

cruising to New Zealand

16-night Azamara New Zealand cruise

New Zealand-only Cruises

If you are looking for a New Zealand cruise solely in New Zealand , I highly suggest booking a New Zealand only cruise. This way, you will enjoy all the best ports of the cruises from Australia and its ports while hitting other, less-visited cruise destinations on North and South Island.

In general, these roundtrip itineraries depart from Auckland. Many of these New Zealand sailings are shorter, however. They typically run for around  three to five nights , but you may be able to find other, longer New Zealand cruises after diligent research.

New Zealand-only Cruise Reasons

You will have up to two days at sea perfect for scenic cruising as you enjoy the views of the landscape passing by. This may sound boring at first, however, these days at sea are completely different from others, as you will see some incredible sites. These include the breathtakingly rugged landscape found at Fiordland.

The New Zealand-only sailings can experience rough waters when sailing further into the ocean during the outside section of the voyage.

New Zealand-only Cruise  Ports

The most popular cruises from New Zealand tend to visit more ports than those leaving from an Australian port. This means they reach the popular New Zealand ports of Auckland, Akaroa, Wellington, Tauranga, and Dunedin , while adding some other, lesser-known destinations.

These include Picton, Milford Sound, and Dusky Sound . These beautiful ports of call on a New Zealand cruise are some of the best sights in New Zealand.

New Zealand cruises Repositioning

New Zealand Repositioning Cruises

If you are looking for relaxing longer cruise that visits New Zealand , I highly suggest booking a New Zealand repositioning cruise. This way, you will enjoy all the best ports of the cruises from Australia and its ports while spending more time at sea and potentially linking up other must-see destinations .

Typically, these repositioning cruises are seen on Transpacific itineraries taking place at the beginning or end of Austrasia cruising season . Check out the larger cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Norwegian Cruise Line to explore these itineraries.

New Zealand Repositioning Cruise Reasons

You will have plenty of days at sea for scenic cruising  as you enjoy the views of the landscape passing by in New Zealand and the other countries you pass. This may sound boring at first, however, these days at sea are completely different from those on other itineraries, as you will see remarkable sights around the Pacific Ocean.

Since these New Zealand repositioning cruises sail across the open waters on the Pacific Ocean , you may want to pack some seasickness medicine if you are susceptible to motion-sickness.

New Zealand Repositioning Cruise  Ports

The most popular repositioning cruises that visit New Zealand typically visit less New Zealand ports than the other itineraries.. This means they won’t reach the lesser-known ports, however they will choose a couple of New Zealand ports to visit like  Auckland, Akaroa, Wellington, Tauranga, and Dunedin .

Popular repositioning routes include cruises from Honolulu to Auckland or Honolulu to Sydney , and the reverse. Of course these South Pacific cruise itineraries will stop in New Zealand to explore its breathtaking natural beauty.

New Zealand cruise ship

New Zealand Cruises to the South Pacific Islands

New Zealand cruises visiting the South Pacific are the perfect way to explore the neighboring islands around this breathtaking country.

This New Zealand cruise itinerary is very popular amongst the locals as they typically leave from Auckland. The waters can be quite rough during these itineraries, however, if you are sailing during the summer months, you should not have anything to worry about.

Some highlights of the longer 7+ night New Zealand cruises include ports of call in New Caledonia and Vanuatu . Others add on other South Pacific islands like Tonga, the Cook Islands, and Fiji .

New Zealand Land and Sea Tours

On a New Zealand cruise, you can expect to journey along the state’s southeastern coast aboard your cruise ship. However, if you are looking to spend more time exploring inland, you may want to consider extending your vacation with a cruisetour.

Many smaller cruise lines like Grand Pacific Tours offer these itineraries. These options were created by popular demand as you can combine a simple New Zealand cruise with an exhilarating land tour . These are typically booked through the cruise line where you can stay in authentic lodges and hike on some of the world’s best treks.

Most of these Land and Sea Cruise-tours are guided by locals . This means you will get to know the land and culture with deep connections to the local communities once you get off your New Zealand cruise.

cruising to New Zealand

Top Cruise-by Ports on a New Zealand Cruise

If you are planning to go on an Alaskan cruise, you can more than likely expect to have a couple days at sea cruising by some of the state’s top natural wonders. This alone is reason enough to splurge on that balcony cabin you have been debating about as you can sip on your morning coffee while watching whales and glaciers pass by.

Milford Sound cruise

Milford Sound

While there may not be a dock or really any port, Milford Sound is truly a treat on any New Zealand cruise situated on the western coast of South Island .

Famously stated as the ‘ eighth wonder of the world ‘ by Rudyard Kipling, Milford Sound was originally carved by glaciers during the ice ages.

Most cruises to New Zealand feature this cruise-by port which is absolutely stunning in any weather. The fjord’s cliffs feature a steep edge , as they rise from the dark waters. Milford Sound offers mountain peaks scraping the sky and waterfalls thundering downwards from over 1000 meters .

Dusky Sound cruise New Zealand

Dusky Sound

Dusky Sound lies amongst plenty of other grandiose fiords at Fiordland National Park in the southwestern area of New Zealand’s South Island .

Originally named by Captain Cook as he sailed by around dusk during his 1770 voyage to the area, Dusky Sound is home to one of the area’s largest fjords.

If you are cruising during the rainy season, you will luckily get to witness hundreds of waterfalls gushing down from the green hills above. Keep an eye out for sleeping seals on Dusky Sound’s Seal Rock and Astronomer’s Point — a historic observatory dating back to 1773 overlooking the dramatic fjord.

Doubtful Sound cruises New Zealand

Doubtful Sound

Frequently referred to as the “Sound of Silence” , Doubtful Sound is a classic cruise-by sight on New Zealand cruises. Similar to Dusky Sound, Doubtful Sound was named by Captain James Hook who decided to not sail into the narrow inlet as it looked a bit tight.

Similar to other fiords in the area, Doubtful Sound features two distinct layers of water that won’t mix . While the top few meters contain fresh water, the remaining water underneath is salt water from the sea.

Look out for the Hall Arm, Browne Falls, and Helena Falls at Deep Cove on your New Zealand cruise. These towering waterfalls are particularly strong during the wetter months of the year. Also watch for the area’s natural wildlife including fur seals, penguins, and bottlenose dolphins .

New Zealand has definitely been on my bucketlist for so long and I didn’t really think of doing it with the idea of a cruise. But now that you’ve mentioned it, I’m definitely convinced. I love how theres a lot of choices. My favorites are Dusky and Doubtful Sounds.

' src=

I have never been on a cruise before and I wanted to go on one last year but unfortunately that did not happen. I would love to go on a cruise that stops at those tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean. I have been to New Zealand many times and taking a cruise to that beautiful country will be amazing.

' src=

I never thought that there would be lots of choices of cruise in New Zealand. But I should since New Zealand is an island country. I found all of them offer beautiful destinations and views. But I would like the ones that go to Milford and Doubtful Sounds. The one that goes to the South Pacific Islands also interest me. It will be great to visit New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Tonga, Fiji, and the Cook Island.

' src=

New Zealand is on my dream list. I did not consider a cruise option yet. But it seems like an interesting attraction. I did not even know that there are so many possibilities and such a wide selection of cruises. It’s great that you have prepared such a detailed post with so many tips! I hope to take a cruise one day.

' src=

I was fortunate to be able to visit North Island a couple of years ago, but really want to go back to see the magic of the South Island too. I had never previously considered a cruise, but what a great idea! Might have to bring this suggestion up to my boyfriend for when travel restrictions ease. Thank you for all the information!

' src=

I have always been fascinated with New Zealand but had no idea about cruises there. Hence I found it immensely useful. Saving it for planning later when we are ready to visit. I would love to go for a longer cruise around the Polynesian islands which sounds exciting.

' src=

I have never gone for a cruise. And all my friends recommend New Zealand. This sounds so dreamy, especially Dusky and Doubtful sounds. The waterfalls and the scenery is so magnificent.

' src=

There are so many options to consider with these New Zealand cruises! I would definitely want to check out the Lord of the Rings sets, but taking a longer cruise around the Polynesian islands also sounds enticing. I’ve always heard amazing things about New Zealand so I am sure I wouldn’t be disappointed with any of the options!

' src=

Fantastic advice here on cruises around New Zealand. To be frank, I haven’t done a cruise and I havent been to this part of the world, so I wouldn’t really know where to start. I think I would prefer to do New Zealand for weeks with a campervan so if I was to do a cruise which included Auckland, I would have to combine it with other Pacific islands like Fiji and Bora Bora. Now that would be an experience to have with my family 🙂

This is the announcement bar for Poornima to test the Close Button.  It will expire May 31 2024.

Top New Zealand harbours

The pristine beauty of Auckland’s harbour cannot be missed on your New Zealand cruise. Named the ‘City of Sails’, Auckland is the main hub for cruise ships and also the largest city in New Zealand, but still has plenty to offer those seeking natural beauty, alongside this modern metropolis.

Abundant with bars, restaurants and shops, a walk along the beautiful harbour is a perfect way to relax and enjoy your surroundings. For a spectacular view of the city, take a trip up the glass-fronted lifts in the 328-metre-high Sky Tower. And for thrill-seekers, there is a Sky walk or jump just waiting for you at the top!

Did you know…?

Auckland is home to over 50 volcanoes, each one originating from a magma source 100 km below the city. But don’t worry, the volcanoes are classified as dormant or extinct, so any eruptions are extremely unlikely during your trip!

--> Auckland cruises

The pretty, circular harbour of Wellington hugs around the ocean and is host to a combination of natural beauty and chic city living. Ranked as one of the world’s finest harbours, Wellington, also known as Port Nicholson, is set below scenic, green rolling hills, which drop down to a beautiful coastline, offering the perfect opportunity for a day’s hike or leisurely ramble.

Despite its compact-size, Wellington is packed with culture. Museums, art galleries and theatres sit alongside the fashionable bars and restaurants of this modern city. A trip to Te Papa is highly recommended. A favourite of locals and tourists, this museum presents the rich cultural heritage of New Zealand and its inhabitants.

Wellington is known as the ‘Windy Wellington’. No matter what time of year you visit, it can get pretty blustery, so always have a warm sweater to hand.

--> Wellington cruises

For incredible wildlife, dramatic scenery and a rich cultural heritage, Dunedin and its harbour, Port Otago, ticks every box.

Famous for being home to the only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatross, the spectacular, rugged Otago Peninsula continues to delight visitors with various other unique wildlife species.

For breath-taking views, a ride on the Taieri Gorge Railway, which traverses across the Taieri Plains and deep into the gorge, is one of Dunedin’s top attractions.

Larnach Castle is a real highlight for history-seekers. Wander around the beautiful gardens and castle rooms that have been carefully restored to their Victorian magnificence, or take in the far-reaching views of the peninsula from the top of the tower.

Dunedin has the steepest residential street in the world. Baldwin Street has a gradient of 1 in 2.86! Every year, the locals hold a ‘Jaffa Race’ where people roll a Jaffa Lolly down the street!

When is the best time for a New Zealand cruise?

New Zealanders enjoy their summer months from December to February, so if you are seeking long, warm days and outdoor activities, this is the time to visit. March and April offer crisp, sunny days that make the gorgeous autumnal colours in New Zealand quite stunning, but rain does become more frequent with an average of 11 days of rainfall during these months. New Zealand also enjoys a winter sports scene from June to August. During this time, the temperature differences between the two islands become more prominent (13 degrees in the North and 7 degrees in the South).

School holidays fall in January, making this time of year peak tourist season and meaning it can get busy. Wait till February and you’ll get summer warmth alongside a more relaxed pace of life.

New Zealand has such a wide range of amazing sights and experiences, choosing what to see can be tricky. These are our favourites:

Milford Sound Fjord

Visit Milford Sound fjord and be in awe at towering mountain peaks, dramatic waterfalls and lush green rainforests. Also, home to fur seal colonies, penguins and dolphins, Milford Sound is an unmissable destination to have on your list.

Maori Culture

Taking time to learn about the fascinating Maori culture in New Zealand is definitely a worthwhile experience. Tamaki Maori Village in Rotorua is the ideal place to visit if you get the chance. Here you can immerse yourself in the Maori way of life, their tribal customs, local cuisine and intriguing myths. Whilst here, don’t miss a trip to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and experience nature at its most amazing.

Lord of the Rings

Discover the extraordinary vista of the infamous Lord of the Rings and experience Middle-Earth first hand. Over 150 locations exclusively within New Zealand were used to captivate audiences around the world. From the Hobbits’ home of the Shire to the dark mountains of Mordor, there are many opportunities for guided and self-guided tours to recreate the magic.

In 2012, New Zealand broadcasted the first weather report in Elvish language!

Regional dishes

New Zealand has a very current food culture, with all the main cities offering fine dining and modern, international cuisine. However, with its extraordinary natural resources, New Zealand has many local dishes that are renowned for being fresh and very tasty.

The local shellfish, known as Tuatua, which has a milder softer texture than other seafood, was originally a Maori tradition, but is now enjoyed throughout New Zealand.

For a delicious sweet-treat, try Hokey Pokey; a Kiwi kids’ favourite of vanilla ice cream mixed with caramelised sugar. The fact that over 5 million litres of Hokey Pokey is consumed every year in New Zealand is proof of its widespread popularity.

Did you know…

New Zealand is home to Manuka honey, which has recently become more well-known in the U.K. due to its believed healing properties for ailments, such as sore throats, digestive illnesses and gingivitis.

Fascinating Facts About New Zealand

With over 4,350 miles of stunning coastline to be explored, enjoy cruising sheltered sounds, volcanic islands and marine reserves alongside the dramatic beauty of Fiordland. Expert guides and local rangers introduce everyone on board to wildlife including dolphins, seals, kiwis and keas. Visit remote areas including Marlborough Sounds, Fiordland and Stewart Island. Experience the grandeur and remote beauty of Fiordland National Park. Encounter the Maori culture and learn about New Zealand’s history and landscape.

Aboard a small expedition ship, avoid well-trodden tourist trails and access remote and pristine wilderness areas. Get up close to wildlife with the expedition team. Wake up to new vistas each day and relax in the comfort of life on board  Coral Adventurer , a ship that features a uniquely Australian atmosphere and particular attention to food and wine. Activities are made efficient by each ship’s onboard Zodiacs and Xplorer tenders.

Awe-inspiring landscapes, indigenous Maori culture and an abundance of unique wildlife all combine to make New Zealand a remarkable expedition destination, and these itineraries showcase remote attractions best accessed by small ship.

South Island & Fiords of New Zealand Itinerary

The South Island & Fiords of New Zealand cruise begins in Bluff and cruises west to Fiordland before cruising along the east coast of New Zealand’s south island to end in  Wellington.

Route map of South Island & Fiords of New Zealand cruise from Bluff to Wellington with visits along the east coast, Milford Sound & Stewart Island.

Enjoy a complimentary transfer by coach from Queenstown check-in to board at 4:00pm at Bluff, New Zealand. There is time to settle into your stateroom before a 5:00pm departure towards Dusky Sound, cruising past Solander Island. Spend the day exploring the ship and all her facilities. Take in the sights while enjoying captain’s welcome drinks and meet your crew and fellow passengers.

Coral Adventurer

On your day at sea, cruise past Solander Island. The Solander Islands, with the Māori name Hautere translating to ‘flying wind,’ are a trio of uninhabited volcanic islets that lie just beyond New Zealand’s South Island. Aboard the Endeavour , Captain James Cook spotted the islands in early 1770, and was named after a Swedish scientific crew member on board, Daniel Solander. The islands have only been known to be inhabited briefly due to marooning or shipwreck.

With one third of the wildlife on the islands being incredibly rare, the bulk of the species include ferns and orchids. Birds known to call the islands home include fernbirds, snipe and white-fronted terns with the islands being declared an Important Bird Area as it is a breeding site for common diving petrels and Buller’s albatrosses amassing some 5000 pairs. The area is well-known for whale migration with sightings of extraordinarily large sperm whales.

Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage site once described as the Eighth Wonder of the World, is characterized by 14 fiords carving through just about 135 miles of coastline. These fiords were carved by glaciers over thousands of years and feature waterfalls cascading down sheer cliffs, rainforest cloaking steep ridges and granite peaks reflected in deep shimmering waters.

These mostly inaccessible and awe-inspiring landscapes were the mysterious source of powerful  pounamu (New Zealand jade), gathered by Maori from the riverbeds and boulders of the South Island — the only place it occurs.  While some European settlers took shelter here, the deep isolation and rugged terrain thwarted all except the toughest from staying. Many of the flora and fauna species have developed in relative isolation, so many of the diverse plants and animals are unique to the area.

Enter Fiordland National Park at dramatic Tamatea/Dusky Sound and cruise among towering cliffs and sheer granite walls of Facile Harbor. Pass some of the 365 small islands and explore the depths of the inlets in Zodiacs.  Inaccessible by road, Tamatea/Dusky Sound is the largest and most complex of the Fiordland Sounds. It is also a designated Important Bird Area for the fiordland penguins that breed here. Encounter the fur seals again at Luncheon Cove.

This afternoon, enter Milford Sound/Piopiotahi to a world-famous view of Mitre Peak, rising some 1,600 feet. Its triangular silhouette rises opposite beautiful Stirling Falls, falling from the top of a 532-foot-high cliff between two towering ridges into the inky dark water. You may have a chance to feel the spray from the waterfall—according to Maori legend, it will make you ten years younger! The steep overhanging cliffs are awe-inspiring while cruising to Harrison Cove, where an ancient glacier entered the fiord, and visiting Bowen Falls.

Doubtful Sound/Patea is the deepest and widest fiord, flanked by towering cliffs and adorned by cascading waterfalls. The stillness and silence of this fiord is compelling and unforgettable. Cruise into Doubtful Sound/Patea and past the outer Seal Islands, Nee Islets and through “the Gut,” before cruising by Blanket Bay and into Te Awa-o-Tū/Thomson Sound. Possibly spot fur seals lounging on the rocks, pods of dolphins and the Fiordland penguin.

Known in Maori mythology as  Te Punga o Te Waka—” The Anchor Stone of Maui’s Canoe”—Stewart Island (Rakiura) is New Zealand’s little known third island. Apart from the communities on the island, many people never venture to remote Stewart Island. Nearby Ulva Island is also found within the Rakiura National Park, offering a predator-free environment for rare and endangered birds including South Island saddleback, Stewart Island weka, New Zealand pigeon/kereru, South Island kaka, yellow- and red-crowned parakeet (Kakariki), morepork, rifleman (New Zealand’s smallest bird), New Zealand fantail, South Island tomtit, Stewart Island robin, yellowhead (Mohoua), brown creeper, grey warbler, New Zealand bellbird and tui.

Spend 2 days interacting with local communities, exploring national parks, and spotting some of the endemic and endangered local wildlife.

Dunedin, settled in and around an ancient volcanic crater, is known for its Scottish and Maori heritage. Named after the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the city’s heritage buildings, cathedrals share a charming old-world atmosphere. Dunedin City is regarded as New Zealand’s architectural heritage capital.

The Otago Peninsula is an area of exceptional diversity. Be welcomed with sights of the world’s only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatross and a colony of the rare yellow-eyed penguin. There will be a choice of included excursions with local operators—choose between a coach tour of the Otago Peninsula or Dunedin City Highlights. Alternatively, take time to explore the city at your leisure; perhaps visit the famous Speight’s Brewery, art gallery, or New Zealand’s oldest botanic gardens.

This morning, sail into the long harbor of Akaroa, formed by the breached volcanic crater that makes up the Banks Peninsula. The village of Akaroa has the unique identity of being the only French settlement in New Zealand, and its charming cottages and French street names still carry that identity today.

Ringed by the pastoral rolling hills of the Peninsula, the scenic village was once a bustling whaling outpost. Here, choose one of two included excursions — a harbor cruise with a local operator to spot marine wildlife or a visit to a traditional hill country farm operated by 7 th generation descendants of the earliest French Settlers on Banks Peninsula. Also enjoy free time to explore the scenic village and visit cafes inspired by French cuisine. A variety of short walks are available into the surrounding nature reserves, such as a walk to Newton’s Waterfall, guided by the expedition team.

Surronded by the breathtaking snow-dusted Seaward Kaikoura Ranges, the picturesque town of Kaikoura is renowned as possibly the best whale watching destination in the world. Kaikoura is one of the very few places it is possible to observe the sperm whale! Aboard a small specialized vessel, explore the ocean in search of these amazing mammals, as well as fur seals, dusky and Hector’s dolphins and other migratory whales.

Kaikoura means “to eat crayfish,” and there may be the opportunity to taste the seafood available here. Also have the opportunity to walk through this small town and visit the museums, galleries and cafes before joining the expedition team on a guided walk over the peninsula to marvel at the spectacular scenery.

The ancient river valleys that form the Marlborough Sounds make up 20% of New Zealand’s coastline. The webs of sunken channels are surrounded by forest-cloaked peaks and vineyards, all of which present a breathtaking view from any perspective. This lush region produces much of New Zealand’s seafood, and 80% of its wine. The fertile soil in this region supported the country’s first known Polynesian settlement in the late 1200s AD at Wairau Bar.

Anchor at historic Ship Cove on your first morning here, before spending the day exploring Queen Charlotte Sound. Over the next 2 days discover the dolphins and seals of the sounds with marine spotting from the Xplorer tender vessel and enjoy wonderful birdwatching on walks through Motuara Island birdlife sanctuary. Be guided by your expedition team and lecturers; there will be options to hike a section of the spectacular Queen Charlotte Track, or shorter walks available. The history of the region is also brought to life with your visit to Ship Cove, where informative storyboards tell of Captain Cook’s time here.

This morning, arrive in Wellington to disembark at 8:00am. Take an included transfer to Wellington’s central business district or the airport.

Accommodations as booked; group transfers during the cruise; all meals onboard; 24-hour coffee and tea; captain’s welcome and farewell drinks; showcase wines and selected beers with lunch and dinner service; excursions and sightseeing; daily lectures and briefings; use of Xplorer and Zodiac tender vessels; all entrance fees to National Parks, ports, traditional owner fees and charges imposed by governing authorities; use of all onboard facilities, including comprehensive range of library and video resources; standard Wifi on board; expedition photos captured during the voyage; tips and gratuities.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India

Apia Samoa Port Guide

Once you experience the tropical paradise of Samoa while on a cruise to Australia and New Zealand , you’ll be quickly enamored by the South Pacific. Most people come here for the beaches, but Apia is a hidden gem where some of Samoa’s best beaches are just a short car ride away. If you’ve ever heard of the American reality TV show “Survivor,” you’ve likely seen some of the Samoan landscape featured in this long-running series, which has been shot on the island.

Apia cruises offer travelers a unique glimpse into daily life in the South Pacific. Beachy and ideal for nature lovers, in Apia you can swim, snorkel, and sunbathe while surrounded by lush rainforest. Get in touch with your inner kid when you slide down the Papaseea Sliding Rocks, natural water slides formed by rock formations. Or spend an afternoon learning about the famous author Robert Louis Stevenson at the museum dedicated to him in Apia. No matter how you choose to enjoy your cruise to Samoa, there’s plenty of fine dining, nature excursions, and quaint local markets to keep you occupied.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to apia, samoa cultural village.

If you’re unfamiliar with Samoan culture and history, the Samoa Cultural Village on Beach Road is your best bet for experiencing a thoughtful dive into Apia’s rich traditions. There are demonstrations on tatau , or Samoan tattooing practices, weaving, woodworking, and dance.

Piula Cave Pool

On a cruise to Samoa, don’t miss the Piula Cave Pool, one of the area’s top natural attractions. It’s about a 45-minute drive from the center of Apia. The water is crystalline and sparkling, and you can usually see down into the bottom of the pool. Swim in the cool waters, even exploring deep into the cave, and bring a snorkel.

Apia’s 24-hour market on Fugalei Street is a shopper and souvenir searcher’s dream, where the bustle of the market means your shopping experience is bound to be exciting. Locals mostly shop for produce at Maketi Fou, but souvenirs, colorful sarongs, and locally made jewelry aren’t too far out of sight. To stay hydrated, enjoy a drink from a local coconut.

Top things to do in apia, swim at papaseea sliding rocks.

Just a 15-minute drive from the center of Apia are the fun (and slick) Papaseea Sliding Rocks, naturally formed water slides made from thousands of years of water running against the rocks. Slide in, swim, and cool off on a hot Samoan afternoon. They’re open Monday through Saturday.

See the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum

Beloved author of classics like “Treasure Island” and “Kidnapped,” Robert Louis Stevenson lived in Apia for several years before his death. A 45-minute guided tour of the mansion offers tidbits about his life and his work, and why Samoa had a glamorous lure for the Stevenson family. Head up the base of Mt. Vaea to see where Stevenson is buried and catch stunning panoramic views of Apia below.

Relax at Vaiala Beach

The rocky Vaiala Beach isn’t the white sandy version you might be used to from other stops in Australia and New Zealand, but that means it’s a much more rustic, undisturbed beach for hammocking, swimming, and relaxing. Nearby at the Palolo Marine Reserve, you can snorkel and see the local sea life.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Apia Cruise Port

Pacific Jewell's Garden Cafe

Address: Levili Village, Apia, Upolu 0685, Samoa

Enjoy the outdoor seating of this quaint garden cafe, where fresh salads, sandwiches, and wraps are menu staples. Brunch items like waffles and banana pancakes are popular, too. Pacific Jewell’s frequently makes “best of” lists in Apia. Come early for lunch because the cafe closes at 3pm.

Paddles Restaurant

Address: Main Beach Rd | Matautu-Tai, Apia, Upolu 1790, Samoa

Family-owned Paddles is one of Apia’s must-visit restaurants. It has a bit of cult status among tourists for its harborside sunset views and quality ingredients. The dishes are a mix of Samoan and Italian, so you’ll see menu items like shrimp curry and gnocchi and desserts like panna cotta.

Nourish Cafe

Address: Mulivai Street, Apia, Upolu, Samoa

There’s a lot to choose from at Nourish Cafe, whether you’re looking for Polynesian classics or comfort foods like fish and chips. They source ingredients locally to make breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes like sweet and savory crepes, fish tacos, and vegetarian and vegan options for all kinds of taste buds.

Bistro Tatau

Address: Corner of Main Beach Road & Fugalei Street | Savalalo, Apia, Upolu, Samoa

If you’re looking for more upscale dining in Apia, check out the romantic Bistro Tatau downtown. They have extensive wine lists, and the dinner menu heavily features fresh catches from lemon pepper fish to seared tuna on a bed of creamy risotto. Try the classic ribeye or the creative papaya and tomato curry.

Culture & History of the Apia Cruise Port

Apia was founded in the 1850s and became the capital of Samoa in 1959. Before that, native populations lived on the islands for thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans. When the Europeans came to Samoa, they brought diseases that greatly hurt the populations living in Apia and the surrounding areas. In the 1800s, Germans, British, and American colonizers all fought for occupation, which made the Apia harbor more popular than ever. Finally, in 1962, Samoa declared independence from New Zealand, and each June, Samoa has a celebration in honor of the country’s independence.

Apia Port Facilities & Location

Cruise ships usually dock at Matautu Wharf. It’s about a 20-minute walk into the center of town from the cruise port. There are also typically plenty of taxis roaming the streets here. To get to the area’s beaches from the cruise port, a taxi is your best bet. There’s also a tourist information center at the wharf with maps and other relevant information.

Transportation in Apia

Apia, Samoa is a taxi town, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a street that doesn’t have a taxi nearby. Taxis are typically very affordable in the area. You can arrange multiple stops with one taxi driver if you want to visit multiple sights in Apia. There’s also a city-wide bus system available for getting around.

Shopping Near the Apia Cruise Port

The farmers markets in Apia are frequented by locals looking to buy fresh produce, fish, and other specialty items. Near the beaches, you’ll find grocery stores and supermarkets to buy snacks and beverages for your South Pacific beach day.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The Samoan dollar is called the tala, where one tala is 100 sene (cents). When you’re headed on a cruise to Samoa, be sure to carry cash with you, as credit cards and debit cards are unreliably accepted once you go beyond the more urban areas. There are ATMs in Apia, but it’s recommended you get to them earlier in the day to get the bills you need. Tipping isn’t regular practice in Samoa, either, except if you’re dining at an upscale restaurant, where a 10% tip is very appreciated.

2024 solar eclipse map: Where to see the eclipse on April 8

These 2024 solar eclipse maps will help you make the best decision about where and how to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday (April 8).

map of north america showing the path of the april 8 solar eclipse

The day has almost arrived: On Monday (April 8) a total solar eclipse will pass across North America, giving more than 33 million people living in 15 U.S. states a rare view of the totally-obstructed sun, and — weather permitting — a taste of some seriously strange eclipse phenomena .

If you’re wondering where the total and partial phases of the eclipse will be visible, the good news is that almost everyone in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see the celestial spectacle to some extent. But for a more detailed view of the eclipse’s path, take a look at these handy eclipse maps, courtesy of GreatAmericanEclipse.com.

Solar eclipse 2024 path of totality map

Map of path of totality across North America of solar eclipse, tilted to show its full path over mexico and canada

Totality is the moment that every eclipse-chaser lives for: The moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s face, resulting in a brief but eerie darkness in the daytime. The path of totality , shown in the map above, is the path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface.

On Monday (April 8), totality will begin in Sinaloa, Mexico, then move northeast up to Texas, ultimately crossing 15 states before moving on to Canada. The states where totality will be visible are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — although Tennessee and Michigan will only be glanced by the moon's shadow.

Related: April 8 solar eclipse: What time does totality start in every state?

Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the spooky daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you — up to a maximum duration of 4 minutes, 27 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses . You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.

Solar eclipse 2024 partial eclipse map

A map of total and partial eclipse coverage across North America on April 8, 2024.

If you live in the U.S. and can’t make it to the path of totality, a partial eclipse still awaits you on April 8. The entire contiguous U.S. will have some view of the partial eclipse, ranging from 99% coverage of the sun just off the path of totality to about 15% coverage far to the northwest of the path.

The map above shows how much of the sun’s disk will be blocked from your location. Watching the partial phases of the eclipse — which last about an hour and 20 minutes before and after totality — means wearing protective eyewear at all times. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you want to experience the celestial spectacle but don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, there are many other ways to safely enjoy the partial eclipse . These include making a homemade pinhole projector , using a pasta strainer to project the shadow of the moon onto the ground or watching one of the various eclipse live streams available.

2024 eclipse travel maps

A travel map showing driving distances to the path of totality on April 8, 2024

If you want to see totality but don’t live within the path, driving or taking public transit to a city within the path may be possible. The map above shows how far the drive is to the path of totality, based on where you’re coming from. Meanwhile, the map below shows the most populated cities within the path of totality — many of which are expected to be flooded with millions of eclipse tourists on April 8.

The biggest cities within the path of totality include: San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton and Montreal in Canada; and Torreón and Mazatlan in Mexico.

Wherever you are on April 8, we wish you clear skies and protected eyes during this rare, wondrous eclipse over North America.

American Queen Coastal Ships Sell for Under $1 Million Each

  • April 5, 2024

Ocean Navigator

The two American Queen Voyages’ coastal ships, which operated primarily on the Great Lakes, have sold for a total of $1,901,000 to American Queen founder John Waggoner, according to a court filing.

The 2001-built Ocean Navigator and Ocean Voyager are now expected to enter service for a new operator following a refurbishment period. Both ships can carry approximately 202 guests each.

Of note, court filings showed Ship Management Group LLC, as the back up bidder with a bid of $1,801,000.

Following the bankruptcy and reorganization of Hornblower, all of American Queen’s assets were auctioned off and the American Queen paddlewheel river fleet was sold to American Cruise Lines.

Further details are expected to be released soon.

7.4 magnitude quake hits Taiwan, strongest in 25 years

By Nectar Gan , Wayne Chang , Jerome Taylor, Antoinette Radford, Deva Lee and Maureen Chowdhury , CNN

Our live coverage of the Taiwan earthquake has moved here.

Search and rescue efforts continue after 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocks Taiwan. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

Rescue workers stand near the site of a leaning building in the aftermath of an earthquake in Hualien, Taiwan, on April 3.

Rescuers are working to free dozens trapped after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the east coast of Taiwan — causing landslides and collapsed structures.

At least nine people have died , more than 900 others are injured and over 100 buildings have been damaged.

The quake is the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years .

Here's what else we know:

  • The quake:  The earthquake  hit  at 7:58 a.m. local time, 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of the city of Hualien at a depth of 34.8 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.
  • Aftershocks : The quake was followed by 29 aftershocks greater than a magnitude of 4.0 near the epicenter of the earthquake in east Taiwan so far, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Tremors have been felt across the island, including in Taipei. Tremors as high as magnitude 7 are  expected  in the following days.
  • Hualien County:  The region where the quake struck, Hualien County, has a population of about 300,000, around 100,000 of whom live in the main city of Hualien. But many in the region live in remote coastal or mountain communities that  can be hard to reach , so it might take time to understand the extent of Wednesday's quake.
  • Trapped miners: Taiwan's national fire agency said that 71 people are trapped in two mines in Hualien.
  • Power cuts : More than 91,000 households were without electricity, according to Taiwan's Central Emergency Command Center.
  • Medical facilities: Hospitals across Taiwan’s capital , Taipei City, are operating normally despite being damaged by Wednesday’s earthquake, according to the Municipal Government.
  • US monitoring: The Biden administration is monitoring the earthquake in Taiwan overnight and is prepared to offer assistance, a National Security Council spokesperson said Wednesday.

71 miners trapped in 2 mines in Taiwan after earthquake, national fire agency says

From CNN's Shawn Deng

Taiwan's national fire agency said that 71 people are trapped in two mines in Hualien after a powerful earthquake struck the island.

In the Heping mine, there are 64 people trapped, and seven more are trapped in the Zhonghe mine, the fire agency said in a news conference on Wednesday.

Video shows man swimming in a rooftop pool when massive earthquake hit

When a magnitude of 7.4 earthquake rocked Taiwan on Wednesday, it struck during the morning commute.

Video shows highway roads shaking and even a man being heavily swayed and rocked on a rooftop pool.

Watch the moment here:

Taiwanese semiconductor facilities will resume production overnight following earthquake

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC), the chipmaking giant, said on Wednesday that its facilities which were impacted by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake are expected to resume production overnight.

TSMC reported that their overall tool recovery is at more than 70% within 10 hours of the earthquake striking the island. Safety systems are also operating normally, TSMC added.

The company noted that a small number of tools were damaged but that there was no damage to its extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) tools. Work at construction sites will resume after further inspections are complete, TSMC said.

Earlier, a TSMC spokesperson told CNN they had evacuated some manufacturing plants. All personnel are now safe, TSMC said in an update.

Biden administration monitoring Taiwan earthquake, White House says

From CNN's Sam Fossum

The Biden administration is monitoring the earthquake in Taiwan overnight and is prepared to offer assistance, a National Security Council spokesperson said Wednesday.

"We are monitoring reports of the earthquake impacting Taiwan and continue to monitor its potential impact on Japan. The United States stands ready to provide any necessary assistance. All those affected are in our prayers," a statement from National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

7 major earthquakes have hit Taiwan over the last 50 years

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake that killed at least nine people and injured hundreds Wednesday, is the strongest to hit Taiwan in 25 years .

Over the last 50 years, the island has experienced a total of seven major earthquakes, the last being a 7.1 magnitude quake in 2006 in Pingtung County in southern Taiwan.

The island sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire , which makes it prone to earthquakes.

See a full list of the earthquakes that have hit Taiwan:

29 aftershocks above 4.0 magnitude have occurred near epicenter since earthquake, US Geological Survey says

From CNN's Sara Tonks

There have been 29 aftershocks greater than a magnitude of 4.0 near the epicenter of the earthquake in east Taiwan so far, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Of these aftershocks:

  • One was above 6.0
  • 13 have been at or above 5.0
  • 14 have been above 4.0.

Forecast during recovery efforts: Tonight's forecast in Hualien City, near the epicenter, calls for increasing cloud coverage. Thursday is looking at mostly cloudy skies with afternoon showers and rain Thursday night and Friday during the day.

Rainfall totals should be relatively light for Taiwan, with models calling for under 25 mm (less than 1 inch) by Friday evening local time.

Watch landslide engulf road after 7.4 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan

A dashcam camera has caught the moment a large landslide came down a mountain in Taiwan, triggered by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday morning.

The quake is the strongest to have rattled the island in 25 years, killing at least nine people and leaving more than 150 trapped.

Cruise ship, Auckland

By Bob McCree

Cruising in New Zealand is the perfect way to explore over 15,000 kilometres of coastline and the spectacular landscapes this diverse country has to offer.

Cruising to New Zealand is a well-established tradition. When the first settlers came here, it was by boat and even up to the 1960’s it was the only way to arrive in this country. Cruises to New Zealand today are, happily, a much more comfortable and luxurious experience.

The most popular places for boarding a cruise to New Zealand are Australia and the South Pacific. Adventure cruises bound for Antarctica also pass through here, as well as round-the-world cruises.

New Zealand is blessed with a compact land mass, which means that each distinct region is within overnight sailing of each other. Whether you are after scenic beauty, interacting with endangered wildlife , learning about Māori culture , or indulging in gourmet goodness , cruising around New Zealand offers varied experiences and life-changing moments.

Map: 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Taiwan

By William B. Davis ,  Madison Dong ,  Judson Jones ,  John Keefe and Bea Malsky

Shake intensity

A major, 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern coast of Taiwan on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The temblor happened at 7:58 a.m. Taipei time about 11 miles southwest of Hualien City, Taiwan, data from the agency shows.

Read our coverage here .

As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquakes reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake may also prompt U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake-severity map.

Aftershocks in the region

An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that follows a larger one in the same general area. Aftershocks are typically minor adjustments along the portion of a fault that slipped at the time of the initial earthquake.

Quakes and aftershocks within 100 miles

Aftershocks can occur days, weeks or even years after the first earthquake. These events can be of equal or larger magnitude to the initial earthquake, and they can continue to affect already damaged locations.

Source: United States Geological Survey | Notes: Shaking categories are based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale. When aftershock data is available, the corresponding maps and charts include earthquakes within 100 miles and seven days of the initial quake. All times above are Taipei time. Shake data is as of Tuesday, April 2 at 8:14 p.m. Eastern. Aftershocks data is as of Sunday, April 7 at 8:58 p.m. Eastern.
