Tours to Benin

It may not be the first place to spring to mind when thinking of an African holiday, but Benin has its offbeat charms and exoticisms. The birthplace of salsa music and voodoo (there's even an annual voodoo festival), Benin marches to a different beat than that of its neighbors.

Best time to visit benin.

The most pleasant months to visit Benin are between November and February when temperatures drop along with the humidity. From April to July and September to October expect heavy rains. The dry and dusty harmattan winds from the Sahara blow between December and March, and this period (particularly February to April) can be uncomfortably hot, with temperatures in the mid-40s (Celsius).

Geography and environment

This relatively small slice of  Africa  has a beautiful coastline dotted with palm trees and beaches. Behind the coast is a network of lagoons which flood during the rainy months. Further inland the plateau gradually rises into the highlands and the Atakora Mountains. Benin shares a border with Nigeria to the east,  Burkina Faso  and Nigeria to the north and  Togo  to the west.

Top 5 distinctly Beninese moments

1. paddle a pirogue.

A good chunk of Benin is under, over, or around water and when the roads disappear, there’s only one way to travel – by pirogue! These dugout canoes have serviced the Beninese for centuries.

2. Walk in the footsteps of slaves

Ouidah was often the last bit of Africa slaves saw as they were sent around the world to be traded and worked. The Portuguese, English and French all constructed forts here to protect their trading interests, one of which now houses a museum that gives you a unique glimpse into the terror and destruction that the slave trade wreaked on this part of the world.

3. Stay in a stilt city

Over 10,000 people call the waters of Ganvie home. Perched up above the lagoon in stilted houses, they eat, sleep, fish and live miles away from dry land. Stay in an auberge for a taste of life on the water.

4. Learn voodoo

Over 60% of Beninese practice voodoo. Dive right into the traditions and everyday rituals as you travel through villages. The Musée d'histoire d'Ouidah gives an interesting insight into voodoo history and culture in the area.

5. Tuck into yams

They’re the favourite, number one food of the Beninese. Mashed, fried, as chips or slathered in peanut sauce - it’s not a meal until it’s been yammed.

Bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north, Benin’s cultural complexity and rich heritage has long been shackled to the slavers who haunted this corner of West Africa for nearly three centuries. The spiritual birth place of voodoo, Benin is a land of fetishes and spirits, whose palm-fringed beaches and rugged northern landscapes play host to a colourful Afro-Brazilian culture and one of the finest wildlife parks in West Africa. Home to nearly 11 million people, the country was dominated for nearly three hundred years by the kings of Dahomey, whose power and prestige came from a flourishing slave trade that saw the area become know as the Slave Coast.

Today the country is home to over 40 different ethnic groups, including Yoruba, Somba, Fon and Dendi. A predominantly Muslim and Christian population, traditional religions nevertheless still have a firm hold in the country, with animistic beliefs still strong amongst the people of the Atakora region, whilst Ouidah is very much considered the heartland of voodoo. Blessed with a reputation for exotic and flavourful food, Benin cuisine is a fusion of African and European styles, with rich sauces accompanying fish, shellfish, stews and fried foods. Its landscapes too will come as a pleasant surprise to many, with its mountains and mangroves, forest-covered savannahs and coastal plains, whilst in the Pendjari National Park you can find some of the largest remaining populations of lions and elephants left in West Africa.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

For travel to Benin you will need to have a Yellow Fever Vaccination prior to travel. There are no other mandatory immunisations for travellers to Benin though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. Malaria is present in most parts of Benin so we recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

Please note that some areas we travel through have strong Muslim influences and people may be offended by revealing clothing. You should dress with respect for local sensibilities on this tour.

Benin is one of the main centres of voodoo practices and that culture remains prevalent. You should respect religious and social traditions to avoid offending local sensitivities.

In Benin, the official language is French. The main religions in Benin are Christianity, Islam and traditional beliefs.

Time

Benin is 1 hour ahead of GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

The food in Benin is some of the best in West Africa and there are lots of places to try it. As is the same in most West African countries’ meals are usually based on a starch staple accompanied by sauces. In Southern Benin, fish is a highlight in the local cuisine including barracuda, dorado or grouper and are served grilled or fried.

Benin has its fair share of local drinks ranging from local beers, La Beninoise or you can try the palm wine, Tchapallo, which is a fermented millet-based drink. For those adventurous types, why not try Sodabe, a clear coloured alcohol distilled from palm wine which will knock your socks off!

Benin Tours

Explore benin with us.

According to Lonely Planet , Benin “sits on the cusp of discovery,” making now and ideal time to discover this small West African nation. As the birthplace of voodoo and an integral part of the Transatlantic slave trade, history buffs and culture tourists won’t be disappointed by Benin’s offerings, but beachgoers, adventurers, and wildlife enthusiasts should be sure not to overlook its palm-lined beaches and the wildlife of its rugged north. As a small country relatively close to Togo and Ghana, tours in Benin combine easily with tours in its neighbors to the west.

What to expect

Despite being off the beaten path, Benin is relatively tourist-friendly, with a wide range of comfortable and luxury hotel offerings in its more-populated south. As you wander north, however, don’t expect the same quality of accommodation or infrastructure. Due to its French colonial influence, you can generally expect tasty cuisine and good service in the areas of Benin most frequented by tourists.

Tips for travel

The best time of year to visit Benin is from November to March, during the dry season. However, Benin’s wet season is relatively mild and is often an ideal time to visit when hotel prices are low and tourists sites are quieter. We are confident that we can deliver amazing tours in Benin any time of year.

We Offset Your Trips Carbon Footprint

We plant 3 indigenous forest tree species for every guest that travels with us..

The main aim for this project is carbon offsetting – guests choosing to travel with us would offset their flights to/from Ghana by more than 15 times if the trees live to their expected lifespan. This is based on projected carbon dioxide generated on a return flight for the average guest (approximately 900kg/1980 lbs). The average tropical tree can absorb approximately 48lbs of carbon per year (when mature) and in Ghana it takes 30-50 years for a tropical tree species to grow to maturity, with an average life expectancy of 200-300 years. If the trees we plant for each guest are continued to be protected, then we are confident that we will be making a big difference in carbon offsetting: 3 trees planted would each absorb approximately 10,080 lbs of carbon, totalling 30,240 lbs/13,745 kg for all 3 trees (per guest).
