Geirangerfjord winter cruise

Fjord cruise from Ålesund to Geirangerfjord - Winter on the Geirangerfjord - Ålesund, Norway

Cruise the Geirangerfjord without the crowds this winter!

  • Join in on an unforgettable winter cruise to the Geirangerfjord from Ålesund.
  • Travel on a warm and cosy boat into the raw, wild, and beautiful fjord landscape, visit the Norwegian Fjord center, walk along the frozen waterfalls in Geiranger and enjoy an included lunch.
  • Experience a popular World Heritage Site without the large crowds this winter.

Enjoy peaceful close contact with the rugged winter nature from a cozy warm boat. Whether you are here when the landscape is sparkling with autumn colors, when it is covered with snow and ice, or when it bursts into spring. A calm rests over the landscape in autumn, winter and spring - the air is sharper, the light clearer and the shadows deeper.

Tour description

This trip starts from Ålesund with a modern boat which takes you into the fjord towards the heart of the UNESCO-area of Geiranger . While sitting comfortably in the boat, you get to experience how the settings change with the landscape. From the open horizons by the coast to the dramatic and mysterious fjords inland.

The last half hour of the trip goes through the vast Geirangerfjord , past abandoned fjord farms, high mountains and mighty waterfalls. Why not go up on the deck to get a light refreshing shower of mountain water on your face?

Included in the trip is a Fjord Ranger from the Norwegian Fjord Center. The fjord ranger will explain how glaciers, rivers and other forces have shaped the landscape, about the great diversity of plants and animals that live here, and about people who once settled here.

When you arrive in Geiranger, you go by bus to the spectacular viewpoint Flydalsjuvet, where you get the chance to take iconic pictures of the fjord and Geiranger. The tour also includes a visit to the Norwegian Fjord Center, which is an exciting visitor and information center for the West Norwegian fjord landscape and for the Geirangerfjord heritage area. Everyone who wants to can walk the 'Waterfall walk' (327 steps) down the magnificent river at Norsk Fjordsenter and back to the boat.

After a day filled with winter impressions from Geiranger, it feels good to get on the boat again for a relaxing trip back to Ålesund.

Consider booking a Norway winter cruise right now for these 10 reasons

Lois Alter Mark

May 23, 2022 // By Lois Alter Mark

By Lois Alter Mark Travel Expert May 23, 2022

Viking's "In Search of the Northern Lights" itinerary is the perfect winter cruise

Thanks to its stunning scenery, Norway is a perfect cruise destination. Not only do you get to surround yourself with magnificent views as you sail around the country, but you stop in both big cities and small villages to immerse yourself in the local culture.

Of course, Norway is a great place to visit in the summer since the midnight sun offers almost 24 full hours of daylight, but you don’t want to miss the magic of a winter cruise when the northern lights take over the sky and the snow turns everything into a fairy tale scene. It’s a completely different experience and one of my all-time favorite trips.

Because of their deep roots in Viking territory – founder/chairman Torstein Hagen was born in Norway and his ocean ships are based in Bergen – no cruise line does Norway like the aptly-named Viking . Although their “Into the Midnight Sun” itinerary is a must-do in summer, consider “In Search of the Northern Lights” for a true must-do adventure. As one of their most popular itineraries, it always sells out quickly.

Even if your dream cruise involves lying on a ship deck in your bathing suit, don’t let the cold weather stop you. Here are 10 reasons you should buy yourself a warm jacket and book this winter wonderland of a cruise right now.

Northern lights

The northern lights are just magical

Seeing the northern lights tops so many travelers’ wish lists and, although there are no guarantees, chances are you’ll get to experience them on this itinerary. In fact, I think every passenger got at least a glimpse of them on the cruise I was on. You can even sign up to get a phone call in the middle of the night if there’s a sighting so you can head outside.

Because the route takes you so far north, crossing into the Arctic Circle and visiting places like Tromso and Alta – considered some of the best sites for viewing the aurora borealis – there are endless opportunities to catch those glorious dancing lights on both land and sea. Many of the activities and shore excursions are actually designed around that goal but are just as enlightening on their own.

Arctic landscapes

View from the ship

This itinerary really gives you an opportunity to experience winter in Norway firsthand, taking advantage of the snow to participate in activities just like the locals do.

Even on sea days, though, you’ll get to enjoy Norway’s gorgeous scenery from the comfort of the ship, whether you head out on the decks to search for northern lights at night or just admire the snow-covered views from your stateroom’s floor-to-ceiling windows during the day.

The Igloo Hotel

Spend the night in The Igloo Hotel

Built – and rebuilt every winter – entirely out of ice, The Igloo Hotel is one of the most unusual hotels in the world, and you can spend a night there.

Tour the hotel, which is filled with creative ice sculptures, and enjoy a drink in a glass made of ice before settling in to your “bed,” which is surprisingly cozy, thanks to reindeer hides and a double layer of down sleeping bags. Don’t worry if you have to get up to use the restroom in the middle of the night. It’s located in the warm building next door and, because there’s so little light pollution, the northern lights just may illuminate the way.

Dog sledding

View from the dog sled!

What better way to enjoy the beautiful Norwegian landscape than on a sled pulled by huskies? These dogs aren’t just cute, though. They’re fast and hard-working, and they’ll happily take you on the ride of your life.

You’ll be given warm weather gear to bundle up in before getting comfortable in the sled and letting an experienced musher take the reins. Afterwards, you’ll want to take selfies with your new furry friends.

Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling is a great way to take in the scenery

If you’ve ever dreamed of taking the road less traveled, Norway is the perfect place to do it – especially on a snowmobile. Your guide will provide you with a snowsuit, gloves and helmet and teach you everything you need to know. Then you’re off through the wilderness, with picturesque views on all sides.

You’ll learn about the important role snowmobiles play in the community and, whether you’re in the driver’s seat or sitting back as a passenger, you’ll imagine yourself living in the Norwegian countryside and being able to do this all winter long.

Scenic hikes by snowshoe

Don a pair of snowshoes for a winter walk

One of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of Norway is by walking and, in winter, that often means donning snowshoes.

Get to know the Arctic landscape one step at a time, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the forests along with sweeping open views. You’ll get an invigorating workout as you set out into the wintry tundra, hear the crunch of your footsteps in the snow and breathe in the fresh air.

Reindeer sleigh rides

On Dasher, on Dancer, on Prancer and Vixen...

You won’t find Rudolph here, but you will get to make your childhood dreams come true as you go dashing through the snow on a reindeer-drawn sleigh. Admire these magnificent creatures and their breathtaking antlers as they guide you through the equally breathtaking snow-covered countryside.

You’ll also get to meet one of the Sami families who travel around the north with their herd of thousands of reindeer to ensure that the animals have enough land for grazing. As you sit in the lavvu – the teepee-like dwelling of these Indigenous people – and learn more about their traditions and way of life, you’ll appreciate that this is what travel is all about.

Northern Lights Cathedral and Arctic Cathedral

The Northern Lights Cathedral in Alta, Norway

The Northern Lights Cathedral in Alta and Arctic Cathedral in Tromso are so unique, they’re worth a visit any time of year. But, if you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, they will immediately put you in the holiday spirit during the winter. Plus, you can choose shore excursions which treat you to a private musical performance in each one.

Designed to reflect the aurora borealis in all its swirly glory, the Northern Lights Cathedral has become an important gathering place for the community. The Arctic Cathedral, with its triangular structure, is one of Norway’s most iconic buildings and is often compared to the Sydney Opera House.

Check out the views from this tent

Spend the night at a husky lodge in a tent with views of the expansive Nordic landscape and, if you’re lucky, the Northern Lights.

After a sled ride led by the trained dogs, you’ll be treated to a traditional Norwegian dinner before settling into your tent for the night. You’ll be warmed by the wood stove and by the thought of all those furry huskies just waiting for a hug.

The Nordic-inspired spa is a soothing sanctuary on all Viking Ocean Cruises

After an active day of winter sports and sightseeing, there’s nothing like relaxing in Viking’s serene Nordic-inspired spa. Unlike on most cruise ships, it’s open and complimentary to all guests, even if you haven’t scheduled a treatment (which, trust me, you should).

Enjoy the steam room, take a nap by the (faux) fireplace and, if you haven’t had enough of the cold yet, enter the snow grotto for a brisk wake-up call before parking yourself in the hot tub.

Essentials I Packed For a Norwegian Coastal Cruise in Winter

If you are taking a cruise to Norway in the winter you might be wondering what to pack.

It can be particularly tricky if you aren’t from a cold climate but it’s very important that you get it right.

I’ve just got back from a Norwegian Coastal Cruise with Havila and this post includes everything that I bought with me, including a few things I’d never cruise without.

Snow Boots – Waterproof and Warm

The first thing that you should think about packing is a good pair of snow boots. They don’t need to be expensive but they do need to be waterproof and to have good grip.

The boots don’t have to be as high up as mine but sometimes the snow was almost as high as my boots and I was very grateful for them!

norwegian cruise winter

I took a similar cruise last year where I didn’t have these boots and just had regular walking boots, the difference was immediately obvious.

I never had cold feed in these no matter how long I stood outside.

emma cruises norway snow boots

The bottom part is one big piece, it’s almost like wearing rollerblades without the wheels!

I didn’t get any blisters despite wearing them all day every day and the fluff at the top stopped the snow from dripping in.

Shoe Spikes – A MUST!

Walking around in snow is relatively easy but walking around on ice is very difficult. It isn’t worth risking falling over and breaking something during your cruise.

There were a couple of times during our cruise that we decided to add our snow spikes (cleats) to our shoes.

emma cruises shoe spikes

We saw lots of other people doing this too.

It is amazing how much easier these make it to walk. It’s like having superpowers!

Yaktrax Walk Traction Cleats for Walking on Snow and Ice (1 Pair), Medium

They are very easy to take on and to put on which is important as many places like hotels and shops will have signs that ask you to remove them.

That makes sense, of course, they are wires which would damage the floors.

There are also versions that are spikes instead of wires but I’ve always found these work best for me.

A THICK Hat – Your Ears Will Thank Me!

There were many days on our cruise when the snow was almost coming sideways, having a hat that I could pull down over my eyebrows was fantastic.

I never went outside without my hat on.

norwegian cruise winter

The hat that I have is a heat holder hat which kept me very warm.

There are lots of different types available of course and a hat is of course personal preference. I like the grey as it goes with anything else that I might be wearing.

Womens Chunky Knit Fleece Lined Thermal Winter Hat with Pom Pom (Light Grey (Arden), One Size)

Heat Holders

This hat is also lined with fleece which is great to wear.

Cold Hands Aren’t Fun – Bring Good Gloves!

On our cruise, the weather ranged from 0c to -15c. Having your hands out in this temperature for more than a few seconds is painful.

I did take off my glove a couple of times to film and take photos and the difference now between my left and right hand is crazy. It’s almost like my right hand has had some windburn!

I can’t imagine what it would be like if I didn’t have good gloves.

norwegian cruise winter

I have Thinsulate 3m gloves, they’re designed to be warm but also not too thick.

I love how there is a cuff at the wrist meaning that no snow could get in.

Men and Womens Gloves - Ski 3M Thinsulate - Touch Screen Fingers - Windproof Cuff, Thick Thermal Wicking Insert

Thinsultate Winter Gloves

The gloves have touchscreen fingers although I did normally take them off to use my phone.

It works okay for the odd button press but when you’re out in the snow your hands will be wet and phones don’t like being poked by wet fingers!

Waterproof Fleece-Lined Trousers

A good pair of waterproof comfortable trousers are a must.

On our trip we had multiple ports per day so didn’t have time to get wet and dry off.

I was cruising for 5 days and only bought one pair.

These were my most waterproof trousers and I’d wear them when I would be walking through deep snow. For the rest of the time on the ship I would wear leggings or cargo trousers.

emma cruises waterproof trousers

They are fleece-lined and have pockets which I appreciate since lots of my trousers don’t!

The material is waterproof and warm .

Made of windproof fabric the Fleece lining is soft warm and cosy. 4 zipper pockets and knee-reinforced design.

Womens Thermal Fleece Waterproof Trousers

My only criticism is that because they are waterproof they do make a woosh woosh noise when you walk.

When wearing these I was always wearing a coat which would do the same so it wasn’t a problem. Plus with the big hat on, nobody could hear a thing!

For Coats, Think Layers!

It’s far better to have a good coat that is wind and waterproof rather than one that is thick and heavy.

A coat doesn’t have to be expensive to be good.

emma cruises havila deck

Mine is a random brand I’ve never heard of called ‘Brave Soul’ which I bought from M&M Direct. It doesn’t matter as long as the coat is good! They don’t sell mine anymore.

I’m pretty sure mine is a pretend version of a similar Superdry coat…

Coats marked as ski clothing are usually pretty good, the main thing you want is wind resistance.

T-Shirts, Trousers and Jumpers/Sweatshirts

Under my coat, gloves and hat I’d usually just be wearing a normal t-shirt. I did bring long-sleeved shirts and that was a good idea but there wasn’t anything particularly special about the rest of my clothes.

I bought a couple of jumpers/sweatshirts to wear but on the ship, I found that it was warm.

I’d often be sat around in just a t-shirt and leggings which did feel strange when looking at the snow outside!

A friend of mine David who writes for Life in Norway told me that wool underwear was the way to go, I did buy some and I think that it worked!

Other Cabin Essentials

Our cabin had quite a few plugs and I bought the below adapter. It’s important to be aware that batteries run out faster in cold weather so you might be charging things more than normal!

This goes for portable battery packs and batteries in cameras too.

International Power Plug Adapter with 3 USB-C and 2 USB-A Ports, All-in-One Worldwide Wall Charger for USA EU UK AUS

EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter

Don’t Forget This!

There is one thing that is even more important than anything else on this list, it’s even more important than packing a coat and that is… travel insurance!

Never EVER cruise without travel insurance. You’ll find my guide on how to get it here .

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship

T hinking of booking a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line ? You have a lot of choices. The Miami-based line operates vessels in almost every corner of the world, with a wide range of itineraries in many destinations.

You'll find Norwegian ships everywhere from the Caribbean and the Bahamas to Europe, Asia and Australia. The line is also a big player in Hawaii.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

In addition, Norwegian is particularly known for cruises to Bermuda out of Boston and New York City, and it offers Canada and New England cruises regularly. It also operates some Panama Canal sailings and trips from the West Coast of the U.S. to the Mexican Riviera.

In North America, Norwegian ships sail from a relatively wide range of home ports, including Baltimore; Boston; New York City; Miami and Tampa; Galveston, Texas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; New Orleans; San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco; Seattle; Honolulu; Vancouver, British Columbia; Quebec City and Quebec in Canada; and Seward, Alaska.

Here is a look at the best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Some of Norwegian's most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It offers a wide range of itineraries in the Mediterranean and across northern Europe.

Norwegian will typically deploy around half of its 19 ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year. Norwegian also sometimes offers Europe cruises in the winter — albeit typically with just one ship.

Norwegian's Mediterranean sailings provide the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona in Spain; and Florence, Rome and Naples in Italy in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek Islands.

In northern Europe, Norwegian will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki in a single sailing.

In past years, such Baltic trips have also included a multiday call at St. Petersburg, Russia — traditionally the highlight of any Baltic sailings. However, like all major cruise lines, Norwegian pulled St. Petersburg from Baltic itineraries in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

As of the publishing of this guide, Norwegian had opened bookings for all of its Baltic sailing through late 2025, and St. Petersburg remains off the schedule for all of them. The line hasn't said when it might return to St. Petersburg.

For those looking to explore northern Europe, Norwegian also offers itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Norwegian's Europe voyages range widely in length from just four nights to a whopping 19 nights (for a repositioning cruise itinerary that begins in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and ends in the European city of Lisbon).

Among the longest sailings that Norwegian offers that focus solely on European stops is a one-way trips between Reykjavik, Iceland, and Oslo, Norway, that includes a wide range of stops in Greenland, Iceland, Denmark's Faroe Islands and Norway.

In Northern Europe, Norwegian ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, England's Southampton and Reykjavík in Iceland.

In the Mediterranean, the line's hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Trieste (near Venice) in Italy; Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece; and Istanbul.

Norwegian isn't the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America , two brands that are sister lines to each other and control a large percentage of the market.

Still, Norwegian typically sends three to five vessels to Alaska every summer, and its big, activity-filled ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit the destination.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from April to late October.

For 2024, Norwegian plans to deploy four ships to the Alaska market for the full season:

  • Norwegian Encore : Norwegian's biggest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It will call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Norwegian Sun: This ship will operate a mix of nine- to 10-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle. The list of port calls varies based on the length of the trips.
  • Norwegian Bliss : The 3,958-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. On most sailings, it will call at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska's Endicott Arm for glacier viewing. Some sailings at the start and end of the season substitute a visit to Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park for the stops in Sitka and Icy Strait Point, and drop the visit to Endicott Arm.
  • Norwegian Jewel. The 2,330-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. The trips typically include stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, plus a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Icy Strait Point.

In recent years, the 1,972-passenger Norwegian Spirit also has spent its summers sailing in Alaska, but most of its Alaska voyages for 2024 were canceled as a result of the vessel being chartered to another company (Norwegian still is marketing two unusual one-way voyages to Alaska on Norwegian Spirit that will take place at the start of the 2024 season — the first a 16-night trip to Alaska that starts in Honolulu on April 22 and ends in Vancouver; the second an 18-night trip that starts May 8 in Vancouver and ends in Tokyo).

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Norwegian Jewel is that they can be combined with Norwegian-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night "cruisetours."

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

The Caribbean and the Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included "Caribbean" in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.

These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 19 vessels in the Caribbean and the Bahamas year-round (in recent years, the year-round ships have been Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape, both sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports). However, it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it deploys a large portion of its ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Norwegian currently has 15 of its 19 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of 2024 — including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,195-passenger Norwegian Viva.

Related: I've sailed on nearly every Norwegian ship. Here are my first impressions of Norwegian Prima

Norwegian offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from more than half a dozen home ports. If you're looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of lots of quick, three- and four-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas.

It also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a handful of longer trips in the region that range from nine to 14 nights.

At the core of the line's Caribbean and Bahamas program are its seven-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Norwegian sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian's private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian's seven Western Caribbean voyages will typically include a visit to Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The line's Southern Caribbean itineraries will often bring visits to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. They typically begin and end in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

When sailing to the Caribbean, Norwegian ships generally sail out of Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The line also offers Caribbean sailings out of Baltimore, Galveston, New Orleans, New York City and, occasionally, Panama City, Panama, and La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands out of Honolulu every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

Norwegian's Hawaii voyages are also more intensely focused on Hawaii than the Hawaii trips offered by most other lines. This is because Norwegian offers its Hawaii cruises on one of the only cruise ships in the world that meets the regulatory requirements allowing it to spend all its time in the destination.

Norwegian's Hawaii trips take place on Norwegian's 2,150-passenger Pride of America, which has the rare distinction of being both U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. By law, only such a vessel can cruise full-time in Hawaii without regularly traveling long distances to foreign ports.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.

The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Related: The 8 classes of Norwegian ships, explained

Norwegian usually deploys two ships on Bermuda runs every year — one out of New York City and one out of Boston.

In both cases, the sailings offered are mostly seven nights in length and include a two-night stay in Bermuda.

For 2024, Norwegian will devote one of its biggest ships, the 3,782-passenger Norwegian Joy, to Bermuda. It will run out of New York. The line's 2,344-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda out of Boston.

In addition, the line's 3,903-passenger Norwegian Getaway will operate a handful of sailings to Bermuda out of New York during the early part of 2024 that include stops in the Caribbean (something that is relatively rare), and the 3,903-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will operate a few sailings to Bermuda out of New York toward the end of 2024.

The line's relatively new Norwegian Prima will operate a single Bermuda sailing out of New York at the end of 2024.

While most of Norwegian's Bermuda sailings are seven nights in length, the line also sometimes offers a few shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings and, occasionally, a longer, nine-night Bermuda sailing.

Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as few as nine hours.

Bottom line

Norwegian offers a wide range of itineraries in destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to Asia. However, you'll find the most choices among Norwegian itineraries in the Caribbean and Europe.

The line is also well-known for voyages around Hawaii and to Bermuda. Its Hawaii sailings, in particular, are something of a rarity in the industry.

Depending on your destinations and what time of winter you go, there might even be a Christmas market or two going on. Potential ports of call on a 2023 winter cruise to the Mediterranean include:

  • Venice (Trieste), Italy.
  • Koper, Slovenia.
  • Dubrovnik, Croatia.
  • Valletta, Malta.
  • Naples, Italy.
  • Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy.
  • Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy.
  • Cannes, France.
  • Barcelona, Spain.
  • Palma, Majorca.
  • Granada (Malaga), Spain.
  • Seville (Cadiz), Spain.

Consider a cruise that departs from Trieste, near Venice, that takes you to some of the most iconic destinations in Europe. Stroll along centuries-old buildings in walled cities like Dubrovnik and Baroque-style palaces and piazzas in Valletta. Visit the famous Roman Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Museums , Michelangelo's David in Florence, or the Leaning Tower in Pisa . Walk along the famous palm-lined promenade in Cannes and see if you can spot anyone famous. Marvel at Gaudi's masterpieces in Barcelona.

Granada has a fascinating blend of European and Arab cultures. Don't miss famous landmarks like The Alhambra , considered one of the best examples of Moorish art in Spain, or Seville's cathedral, one of the world's largest. Your cruise might end in Portugal where you are free to explore the beautiful architecture and award-winning wines.

If it's an adventure you're after, book one of the many hiking, walking, and off-road excursions. There's no shortage of incredible eats on a Mediterranean cruise either. Try the Margherita pizza in Naples, gelato in Rome, tapas in Barcelona and Seville, and more.

While you decide which 2023 winter cruise is right for you, don't forget to sign up for Norwegian's cruise deals to get the latest deals delivered to your inbox.

How to plan a memorable first-time alaska cruise.

The remarkable scenery of Glacier Bay is a highlight on many Alaskan cruise itineraries.

Embark on a journey through Alaska's pristine wilderness aboard a cruise ship, where you can experience the awe-inspiring nature of the last American frontier in comfort.

As you glide past icy fjords and into secluded bays, seize the chance to witness magnificent glaciers up close, and keep your eyes peeled for the mighty bears, whales and eagles that call this rugged landscape home.

However, don't make the mistake of thinking you’ll have peace and quiet. Remote it may be, but Alaska is one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations.

Ports such as Skagway can accommodate up to four large cruise ships at once. Smaller ports can easily become overwhelmed with visitors, while popular shore excursions sell out well in advance. As such, there’s a lot to understand about Alaska cruises before booking.

Cruise Lines In Alaska

Most major cruise lines sail in Alaska, ranging from large, modern ships full of amenities, down to smaller, older ships with more outside space and a relaxed vibe. Expedition cruises on even smaller ships focus more on wildlife and geology.

When picking a line and ship, consider your choice of cabin carefully. Although inside cabins offer a cheaper deal, the value of a balcony cabin shouldn't be underestimated. On scenic cruising days, you’ll be able to enjoy the landscape—and potentially wildlife—without jostling for position.

Alaska Cruise Itineraries Explained

There are two main types of Alaskan cruise itinerary: the Inside Passage roundtrip, and a one-way Gulf voyage. Each route offers unique opportunities to see both glaciers and wildlife, with specifics depending on the season.

Apple iPad 2024 Release Date: Your Final, Complete Guide To What And When

Katy perry met gala dresses go viral but they re ai fakes, huawei pura 70 ultra global version just available with features that outdo samsung galaxy.

Alaska is a popular cruise destination in the summer.

Seven-night Inside Passage cruises typically depart from hubs like Seattle or Vancouver, calling at popular stops like Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway. Many feature a scenic cruising tour of the breathtaking Glacier Bay National Park.

For example, this 7-night itinerary on Norwegian Encore including all those highlights is available between April and October in both 2024 and 2025.

For those seeking deeper exploration, one-way Gulf voyages include the highlights of the Inside Passage route, but also venture closer to the Arctic Circle. Typically, such itineraries start or end at Whittier or Seward near Anchorage.

This 7-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises includes port calls at Sitka, the historic Icy Strait Point, and scenic cruising of the Hubbard Glacier on the way from Vancouver to Seward.

Some cruise lines combine Gulf voyages with curated tours before or after the cruise for a comprehensive Alaska experience. Such tour packages include famous rail journeys, visits to Denali National Park, and optional overnight stays in Anchorage or Fairbanks.

Longer Alaskan cruise itineraries, especially those on smaller ships or expedition lines, may include remote locales like Kodiak Island and the Aleutian Islands.

Port Excursions In Alaska

Exploring ashore on guided excursions is a highlight of any Alaskan cruise. Each port offers unique opportunities to engage with the natural environment and local culture, but the popularity of cruising in the region means advance booking is essential.

Some of the most popular tours may fill up just days after they go on sale, in some cases months before the actual cruise. Consider independent tour options, but read the terms and conditions carefully and check for reviews from previous cruisers.

Mendenhall Glacier is a popular cruise excursion from Juneau on Alaska cruises.

Alaskan capital Juneau is renowned for its glacier tours and wildlife viewing opportunities. The hike through backcountry to the Mendenhall glacier requires a good level of physical fitness, while whale watching boat trips are just as popular.

The historic Skagway train tour along the Klondike route in a vintage coach, featuring stunning vistas and rich gold rush era history, is a must-do.

Cultural tours in Ketchikan often include visits to the Saxman Native Village, where totem poles and traditional dance performances offer insight into the local Tlingit culture.

When To Cruise Alaska

Alaska is not a year-round cruising spot, and the season is shorter than most leading cruise destinations. Alaska’s cruising season ranges from late April to late September.

April : Expect relatively dry days, though not completely devoid of light showers and fog. Bears are only just emerging from their winter slumber so sightings are unlikely, but you may see eagles and humpback whales.

May : With more ship options, relatively dry weather, long hours of daylight, and good value fares, May is a popular time to cruise Alaska before the peak. Wildlife, including migrating shorebirds, whales, and bears, are more visible.

June : Mild temperatures and long daylight hours—up to 19 per day—provide optimal cruising conditions. Enjoy vibrant greenery and more wildlife sightings, but prepare for the possibility of mosquitoes (especially on trips inland) and variable weather.

July : July brings mild temperatures, often reaching the 70s, but it's also the start of the wetter period. Expect long hours of daylight ideal for wildlife sightings, including salmon runs and bear activity. However, peak cruise season means high fares, busier ships, and busier ports. Local produce starts to feature heavily on menus shoreside.

Juneau, Alaska, has a spectacular natural setting and is a gateway to many exciting outdoor ... [+] experiences.

August : Expect rain, with daytime temperatures in the low to mid-60s and nights cooling to the upper 40s, and ample wildlife viewing opportunities, as bears and bald eagles are active near salmon streams. Fares, along with the number of daylight hours, fall later in the month.

September : Expect cooler temperatures and frequent rain, which may risk the success of outdoor excursions. Despite less demand, wildlife viewing remains good with bears still active near salmon streams and whales still present in coastal waters. September also offers a chance to see the northern lights .

What To Pack For Alaska Cruises

Packing smart for an Alaska cruise means being prepared for both adventure in the great outdoors and the comforts of cruise life.

An Alaskan journey demands attire for cooler climates. Essentials include a fleece jacket, thermal socks, and a warm hat to combat the cold, along with sweaters and thermal underwear for effective layering. Waterproof gear such as a reliable rain jacket and waterproof pants are crucial for unexpected rain or snow showers.

You should also consider waterproof bags to protect your electronics and important documents during shore excursions.

Sun protection is vital due to the deceptive Alaskan sun. High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are necessary to guard against UV rays and snow glare.

Footwear should include waterproof hiking boots for rugged terrain and slip-proof sandals for the deck, accompanied by thermal or wool socks for additional warmth.

For shore excursions, a collapsible backpack and a thermal water bottle will keep you organized and hydrated, while binoculars can greatly enhance wildlife tours. A simple first aid kit, sea-sickness bands, and insect repellent are other wise packing choices.
