Odd Future Reunited at Earl Sweatshirt’s 10th Anniversary Doris Show

By Grant Rindner

Alumni of Odd Future—the paradigm-shifting LA collective that took the entertainment industry by storm in 2011—continue to dominate the music industry, like the hip-hop equivalent of the Dazed and Confused cast going on to run Hollywood, but at this stage, we rarely see the original members together. Most of that seems to be less about bad blood and more about busy schedules and creative growth, but it’s still a thrill when the whole gang, or at least most of them, gets together in the present day, and we got to see one such reunion over the past weekend.

On Saturday, Earl Sweatshirt performed a 10th anniversary show for his acclaimed debut album Doris, and used the set as an opportunity to get much of the Odd Future crew together en masse for the first time in years. The assembled members included Earl, Tyler, the Creator, Syd, Casey Veggies, Jasper Dolphin, and Lionel “L-Boy” Boyce. (Frank Ocean was conspicuously, but perhaps inevitably, absent.) Tyler performed he and Earl’s Doris collaboration “Whoa” while fellow Odd Future MC Domo Genesis came out to rap “Wave Caps” with Earl.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Odd Future burst onto the scene with an abrasive style and fearless creativity that contrasted much of mainstream hip-hop in the early ‘10s. By the mid-point of that decade they’d begin to splinter and follow different creative paths; fans have been clamoring for a potential reunion for eons. The last big link was back in 2018, when an impromptu Odd Future reunion happened at the final installment of L.A.’s Low End Theory party series, where Tyler brought Earl, Syd, and Hodgy Beats to perform with him . In 2020, on the subject of a reunion Tyler told a London audience , “Nine times out of seven, no. I would be open to it, but I think everyone is kinda past that. I think some people base it on nostalgia rather than like, ‘Would it actually be good?’ Like, we don’t always need a Bad Boys 5 .” He also stressed that the members of Odd Future have grown musically since their early days working together, and that their individual creative visions may not gel as well. (He also said, frankly, “The OF tapes weren’t that good.”) Tyler does continue to work with many of his old running mates, featuring Domo and an uncredited Frank on his most recent release, 2021’s Call Me If You Get Lost.

Since disbanding, Tyler has won Grammys and topped charts, Earl has become a critical darling, and Syd has become one of the most compelling artists in the world of progressive R&B. But some of the most interesting developments from Odd Future have been in other lanes of the entertainment world. Boyce plays a key supporting role in Hulu’s hit dramedy The Bear as pastry chef Marcus Brooks, while Jasper joined the Jackass crew and, along with his father, was part of several riotous moments in 2022’s Jackass Forever. Taco, working under his real name Travis Bennett, is a rising actor , too, with successful turns in Dave, You People, and a role in music video director Jack Begert’s feature debut Little Death.

Earl is performing a New York Doris anniversary show on August 23, so perhaps we’ll get another makeshift reunion of the seminal collective.

What Happened to Odd Future?

'I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside' signals the group has grown apart.

A year and a half after Doris and an F-rated roll-out later, Earl Sweatshirt released I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside on Monday. Earl dubbed his third full effort (including his eponymous 2010 mixtape) his most transparent yet. “This is the first thing that I fully stand behind, like the good and the bad of it,” he told NPR . “I’ve never been behind myself this much.” This revelation is surprising given how personal Doris is and how many of the same issues carry over to I Don’t Like Shit . His concerns about being too busy getting his first album cracking to see his passing grandmother has turned into him mourning her death with a bottle as his partner in grief. The girlfriend he worried about losing on “Sunday,” she’s gone, too. And his disdain for fame, a catalyst in both of those conflicts, has only grown stronger.

I Don’t Like Shit is more agoraphobic than its predecessor, from its lyrical content to collaborators. The album is entirely self-produced, save one song done by Left Brain, and features just four guest appearances. Odd Future is conspicuously absent from the brief guest list, except for Left Brain’s contribution—the most glaring omissions being Tyler, the Creator and Frank Ocean.

2012 and 2013 were monumental years for Odd Future and its three most luminous stars. We saw (in order) the long-awaited release of Earl from Siberia Samoa; Frank’s Grammy-winning masterpiece, Channel Orange ; Tyler’s beautifully melodic, relatively matured Wolf ; and Earl’s long-awaited, hype-affirming debut album. All three of the projects featured cross-pollination from the artists, and each was better for it.

But today Tyler and Earl haven’t recorded music together since 2013’s “Sasquatch,” and Frank is nearly a year removed from dropping Odd Future managers Christian and Kelly Clancy.

So what happened?

There hasn’t been a major beef, a major slight as far as we know. No one has withheld millions of dollars a la Lil Wayne and Birdman or been pitted against each other by the media a la Kendrick Lamar and Drake. And certainly no chains have been snatched a la every rapper ever. In fact, there doesn’t appear to be any animosity between the three parties. Instead, it appears the straying paths of Tyler, Earl, and Frank are just a natural byproduct of being in their 20s.

Frank’s progression is tough to track given his notoriously reclusive nature and status as more of an Odd Future outlier since the beginning. It’s probably those qualities that led him to leaving Odd Future’s management (it’s unclear if he’s still officially in the group or not). Tyler himself invoked the former explanation when asked about Frank’s departure in a recent Fader cover story: “He could care less about the spotlight type shit, which is cool. I wish I took his route and just disappeared from social media for the past year. I got too much shit going on… But that would be so tight.” The changing mentalities of Tyler and Earl, however, are much easier to follow—even if Earl doesn’t like shit or going outside.

By the time Earl returned to Los Angeles from his reformative sentence at Coral Reef Academy, he’d already decided to leave behind the bars full of graphic portraits of murder and rape he once traded gleefully with Tyler as a form of competition. He stumbled over his words when telling The New York Times about his experience working with survivors of sexual abuse while in Samoa: “There’s nothing you can—there’s no—you can’t evade the—there’s no defense for like—if you have any ounce of humanity.”

The differing opinions on the violent subject matter, which Tyler has yet to fully abandon, wasn’t the only change. Odd Future members and fans alike expected Earl to jump right back into the crew upon his return, but his transition back wasn’t so seamless. Earl signed his own record deal with Columbia and established his own imprint, Tan Cressida. The deal did put him in the same Sony system as Odd Future, though, allowing the donut logo to appear on his records.

A series of tweets from Tyler on the day and day after Earl announced his return revealed the mixed emotions that came with Earl's uneasy transition back into a group that had sold out shows, appeared on late night TV, and nabbed a Billboard top 10 debut with Goblin  during his absence.

Ive Never Been Excited And Angry At The Same Time Until Today. Thats A Fucked Feeling. — Tyler, The Creator (@fucktyler) February 8, 2012
everybody wants me to tweet something right now. — Tyler, The Creator (@fucktyler) February 9, 2012
Fuck everything else, I just wanna go skate and talk about the past year. Fuck the music and the public. This shit sucks, y'all have no idea — Tyler, The Creator (@fucktyler) February 9, 2012

Friendships have undoubtedly ended over more trivial issues, but Tyler and Earl were able to talk things out successfully. Earl told the Times  in 2012 that he had to force things to be uncomfortable to finally have the necessary conversations. “It’s like we both don’t know how much influence we have on the other person,” he said. “There’s times where I realize, like, damn, I matter.”

All signs pointed to a full reconciliation. Over the course of the next year we saw Earl back in the Odd Future fold audibly and visually via the group’s Adult Swim sketch comedy series, Loiter Squad . The two even planned on creating the fabled collaborative EarlWolf LP. After Earl's somber gut-spilling of a lead single “Chum,” Tyler used the introduction of the second single, “Whoa,” to assure fans the duo wasn’t bailing on “that fucking old 2010 shit.”

But that return was slight at best on Earl’s end, and Doris as a whole stayed away from the time machine. The connections were still apparent—the same way you can hear the occasional hint of The College Dropout in Kanye’s more recent work—but Earl took his dexterous grappling of words to a disparate albeit still dark place. Once used to outline his twisted fantasies, his skills were applied to periods of mirror gazing. I Don’t Like Shit only makes that transition more pronounced. If the new album is the first to truly represent Earl, the parts of Doris that aren’t himself seem to be those tied most securely to Odd Future. Without his smart-ass boasts—“I was making waves, you was surfin’ in ’em/Dealing with the stomach pains just from birthin’ niggas’ shit,” he raps on “Grief”—we’d think Earl was made by an entirely different rapper. (And we’d also be downright concerned about his well-being.)

Meanwhile, we don’t know exactly where Tyler’s at musically. We know he’s been working on a new album, but we haven’t been given a song, a title, anything. Whatever he’s doing, it’s no longer on the same wavelength as Earl or even close enough for the signal to bleed over. And the same disconnect could be said of their friendship.

“That’s my nigga,” Tyler told The Fader of Earl. “We just aren’t as close as we were. It’s kind of weird, but I’m smart enough to know, OK, shit changes.”

And that’s just it: Shit changes. Your 20s are a period of rinse, wash, repeat transformation—a decade in which you can easily look back at the you from a couple years, a year, or even a few months prior and not recognize that person. The odds are stacked against you and a person you were friends with at 16 staying simpatico as you two simultaneously wrestle with your own identities.

Odd Future isn’t immune to the force of growth that can gradually pull longtime friends apart. Earl was absent for the epic rise of Odd Future. And because he came back to Los Angeles as a rapper just as famous as Tyler, he had to adapt much quicker than his peers. It’s understandable for him to stay back from tours—“T and them just hit the road, I had Sage and Nak and ’em with me,” he raps on “Inside.” His relationship with Vince Staples makes sense too. Vince was coming up around the same time Earl was coming back; now the two are currently on tour together. It’d be unfair to say Vince has replaced Tyler, but he’s obviously the more prominent friend and collaborator in Earl’s life now.

Earl himself touched on his growth in his NPR interview, saying, “I feel like I learned so much more in [the past] year and a half than I learned in the rest of my life.” That year-and-half timeline coincides with the release of Doris and the last collaboration with Tyler and Earl.

Clearly the two are still cool, though. Tyler, who’s largely shunned social media in recent months, retweeted two links to purchase I Don’t Like Shit this week and a link to the “Grief” video last week. (I realize how ridiculous it seems to reference Twitter while gauging a friendship, but, yo, this is our reality in 2015.) And Earl hasn’t actually left Odd Future or its management either. “You can talk to Clancy if you need a feature or a quote from me,” he raps on “Huey.”

So what happened to Odd Future? It’s gone through life.

The Odd Future of Odd Future: a guide to what the rest of the collective did next

A decade on from the rap collective’s debut album and subsequent implosion, Skye Butchard logs what happened next for Odd Future beyond those who became superstars

Words by Skye Butchard

If you were in secondary school in 2012 and wore a bucket hat all year round, there’s a good chance you know every verse on Odd Future’s ‘ Oldie ’. The ten-minute posse cut and its accompanying video underlined everything that was special about the L.A. rap collective at their peak. Released a decade ago on the group’s only major label record, The OF Tape Volume 2 , it’s a rare moment that still stands up to scrutiny. Its members will likely say the same.

In many ways, you had to be there. Much of Odd Future’s material was juvenile and petulant. They rapped about rape and the Columbine shootings, used slurs like they were collecting them, and made early horrorcore look sophisticated.

They were also incredibly talented, and spoke directly to a young audience without condescension – something record execs still can’t do. Their ascension was fuelled by shock tactics, gobbled up by an over-eager music press and a rabid fanbase. But there’s no doubt their DIY approach earned much of the hype. It still gives me chills watching Earl Sweatshirt, Frank Ocean, Tyler, the Creator and Syd Tha Kyd revel in their success on ‘Oldie’, lip-syncing their verses at a chaotic XXL photoshoot while photographers look baffled.

Its biggest members outgrew OF by 2016, moving on to more timeless and impactful material. Tyler’s exploration of raw, conceptual R&B has made him a superstar. Frank is as elusive and singular as ever. Earl is the poet laureate of a heady experimental rap movement having its own moment. Syd and the rest of The Internet are keeping the groove flowing.

But you know about all those guys. What about the members that aren’t headlining festivals? Who was the white guy on that album cover? Here’s the odd future of Odd Future.

When Odd Future splintered in a thousand directions, so did Left Brain. As part of MellowHype with Hodgy, he embodied the edgy and aggro attitude that was part of Odd Future’s larger strategy of drumming up as much commotion as possible. Ironically, it was later that he mellowed, producing more layered and mature music for a host of names in the indie rap scene. Just this year, he formed a partnership with fellow L.A. artist Sahtyre. Single ‘Bat Outta Hell’ is one of his strongest songs in years, entering a woozy, depressive and reflective mood that suits him well.

Casey Veggies

This founding member of Odd Future was releasing music even before the collective took off, with his 2007 mixtape released at the age of fourteen. That feels like a lifetime ago for all of us, but certainly for Casey, who’s been at war with record label Epic since the release of his 2015 debut album Live & Grow . Epic wanted hits but weren’t exactly helping him get there. His is a cautionary tale of the way labels can trap young artists in restrictive contracts while they’re still growing. Now releasing independently, with projects like 2019’s Organic, he’s finally making the music he wanted to make.

When Tyler, the Creator jumped on Jimmy Fallon’s back ten years ago on Late Night , Hodgy was right there beside him. A few years later, the two had a public falling-out at Camp Flog Gnaw, Tyler’s music festival. Hodgy was upset about Tyler’s perceived abandonment of those who helped him start the collective. He bad-mouthed him on stage. Though they eventually patched it up, this public feud foreshadowed the frayed nature of a group that began to outgrow itself in the same way most school friends do. Later, he split up with MellowHype, and he’s been out on his own ever since.

Hodgy never found a signature sound like the group’s heavy-hitters. His latest EP, Everyday People Change Into Someone is awkwardly caught between melodic R&B and the bad punchlines of his youth. He sings: “Everyday I’m on my grind like a skateboarder” far too sincerely. He’s still using the word ‘retard’. You remember why you didn’t keep up with everyone you liked as a teenager.

Jasper Dolphin

“Hey it’s Jasper, not even a rapper… got a TV show so I guess I’m an actor” . Those cheeky opening lines from Jasper’s verse on ‘Oldie’ are exactly what made OF’s punk-rap ethos exciting. He was mostly goofing around. He and his friends made Adult Swim comedy shows, hypebeast clothing, and weed strains, and had skinny white kids and CEOs alike in the palm of their hand.

To this day, he’s still having a blast on the stoner TV circuit, fittingly starring in Jackass Foreve r, a clear career highlight for a teen who once dreamed of making a show called ‘Blackass’.

Domo Genesis

When Domo Genesis featured on Tyler’s Call Me If You Get Lost last year, an alternate reality was opened. It was one where Odd Future stuck together and sharpened their original sound as close collaborators. The results were impeccable. With the new skills and perspectives they picked up with time, Tyler and Domo did their throwback justice.

It also highlighted just how entertaining and consistent Domo Genesis is. I’m sure plenty of fans went back to check out his recent material after listening. Though never selling out arenas or cultivating a ravenous fanbase of his own, Domo Genesis is always reliable for a good feature.

Joining in the second wave of Odd Future sign-ups, Mike G’s time with the collective leant more on the professional side than the ‘hanging out with my friends’ side. He released music before the group, and plenty more music afterwards. These days, you can find him making Chopped and Screwed remixes as part of The Chopstars collective, battle-rapping in old-school leagues, and releasing steady solo material of his own. Still, his ‘Mike G.S.I.’ sketch as part of the Loiter Squad – a gloriously awkward CSI parody – more than justifies his time with OF.

When Odd Future was having its moment, circumstance meant that Vritra was left behind. He was evicted from his L.A. apartment around the time that contracts were being signed, and his move back to Atlanta left him outside conversations that solidified the core members. His success has been forged out of years of graft on his own independent projects while working as a forklift driver by day. After a handful of projects, and a signing with independent label Stones Throw, he’s carved a space for himself. He’s a prolific and dependable musician who perhaps didn’t get his dues at the time.

Brandun DeShay aka Ace Hashimoto

A weird one. Though collaborating with several Odd Future members, and featuring on the original version of Tyler’s Bastard, there are some in the crew who’ve claimed that DeShay was never an official member. Their Twitter even stated “OF does not fuck with Brandun DeShay” in 2010. For fans, his contributions stand more as an example of the volatile and combative nature of the collective. It seemed that if it was 2010, you were from L.A. and you wore a pink doughnut t-shirt, you could brag about connections to the group.

So what is he up to now? After producing key tracks on classic albums like Danny Brown’s XXX, Brandun moved to Japan, changed his stage name to Ace Hashimoto and started singing. His solo album Play. Make. Believe , was released last year.

Lionel Boyce

You might know Lionel Boyce (aka L-Boy) as the guy roasting each member at the start of The OF Tape Vol 2, but he had more behind-the-scenes influence than many realise. He was involved in the group’s oddball TV ventures, including co-creating the group’s surprisingly decent animated sitcom The Jellies, which ran for two seasons. He’s also due to star in the upcoming FX comedy The Bear , which has got that guy who played Lip from Shameless in it. It might be good?

Matt Martians

Though not a household name, Matt Martians played a key role as band member in The Internet, alongside former OF alumni Syd, Patrick Paige II and Steve Lacy. His beat-driven solo work is worth highlighting, too. Take [Going Normal], a groovy collection of homemade loosies quietly dropped last year. Having worked with Vritra, Brandun DeShay and a host of other affiliated acts, it’s arguable that Matt Martians is the secret glue that holds many of Odd Future’s separate artistic impulses together.

Travis Bennett

Like the rest of the group, Travis ‘Taco’ Bennett has had an unusual and unexpected career since the death of Odd Future. Highlights include voice acting in GTA V and directing the group’s Adult Swim shows. More recently, he’s starring in Lil Dicky’s hit comedy Dave, and co-creating Hanging With Kuz , a series that follows LA Lakers star Kyle Kuzma as he gives fans a look at his life away from the court. “I really didn’t do anything,” he told Complex last year about his time in Odd Future. “I didn’t rap. I didn’t produce.” As he shakes off the ‘Taco’ part of his name, he’s doing a lot more.

Lucas Vercetti

Lucas Vercetti is the twinky white guy cheesing on the cover of The OF Tape Vol 2 . He basically managed the merch stands, did some photography, and looked cute. Merchandising is an important job, but your merch guy normally isn’t in the group.

This strength-in-numbers mentality was of course part of what got Odd Future attention in the first place. If us journalists were gullible enough to take the bait, to the point that we’re still writing about Lucas Vercetti a decade later, then that’s on us. Apparently, there are rumours he’s now dating Bruce Willis’ daughter, so he’s probably doing alright.

“You Keep Filming!”: The Oral History of Odd Future’s Chaotic, Joyous “Oldie” Video

In March 2012, an XXL photo shoot for the most blog-famous act in rap spontaneously became the backdrop for a music video. Ten years later, Tyler, Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, and others reflect on the viral clip and what it meant.

It’s been 16 years since he first drew that doughnut.

Like several of his peers in the Odd Future collective he cofounded, Tyler, the Creator is now an A-list star, a multi-hyphenate, a key figure in understanding popular music’s evolution from 2010 to present. But from roughly 2007—the year after Tyler sketched out that soon-to-be-iconic doughnut logo —to 2012, he and his loose constellation of rapper, singer, producer, actor, skater, and visual-artist collaborators were best known as a rabble-rousing clique whose prolific musical catalog made them the most blog-famous act of the early 2010s. If you were forced to pinpoint the exact moment when OF began to feel less like a single chaotic entity and more like a launching pad for the drastically different careers of its various members, it would be March 20, 2012, 10 years ago this weekend.

That day, the crew released their final collaborative project, The OF Tape Vol. 2 , its cover bearing that same doughnut. It sold well, peaking at no. 5 on the Billboard Hot 200, and received mostly positive reviews from music critics, including a respectable 7.5 from Pitchfork . But the album’s greatest impact and legacy came courtesy of its closing track, the 10-plus-minute-long posse cut “Oldie.” Much of the initial hubbub stemmed from the fact that prodigious OF member Earl Sweatshirt had a verse on the track—his first in almost two years, coming after he “disappeared” and later was discovered to have been attending a school for at-risk boys in Samoa. But the main reason “Oldie” has remained comfortably lodged in the public consciousness is its spur-of-the-moment video. On the surface it’s nothing more than an impromptu lip sync, but its portrayal of the camaraderie and juvenile brilliance of a group with such strong personalities is unparalleled.

“I went third person for a second, and I was like, ‘Yo, just film this, get it,’” Tyler remembers. “It became such a cult classic.”

Two days before the album release, there were no plans to shoot an “Oldie” video. Honestly, 10 minutes after the sizable OF posse walked into Milk Studios in Chelsea on March 19, there were no plans to shoot an “Oldie” video. The day before a tour stop at Hammerstein Ballroom, the plan was for famed—and later disgraced —photographer Terry Richardson to shoot the group for an XXL cover. Thanks to a number of factors, that didn’t exactly work out. What we got instead was, in the exact words of eight people who were there, who were all interviewed separately for this oral history, “a moment.”

Part 1: “Let’s Do an Eight-Minute Posse Cut”

By spring 2012, Odd Future had been in the public eye for a couple of years. A spree of mixtapes released between late 2009 and 2010—including Tyler’s Bastard , Earl’s Earl , Hodgy Beats and Left Brain’s first two projects under the name MellowHype, Mike G’s Ali , Domo Genesis’s Rolling Papers , and the crew’s collaborative Radical —had the prevailing blogs of the day in a tizzy. Their raucous early concerts (which resulted in more than a few broken limbs among the group) as well as some members’ violent, offensive lyrics made their reputation as pariahs an even bigger story than their music. But OF’s star-making enterprise was in full swing by 2012. Tyler had a solo deal with XL Recordings and a debut album that sacrificed none of his self-produced chaos, Frank Ocean’s debut tape launched him onto Kanye and Jay-Z’s Watch the Throne , and Syd and Matt Martians’s band the Internet was taking form. With everyone in the group seemingly peeling off into their own endeavors, it was time for one last collaborative effort. Before The OF Tape Vol. 2 ’s release, with most of the album finished, Tyler got an idea for its closing track.

Tyler, the Creator (Odd Future rapper and producer): “Oldie” was just a random beat I made when I was trying to perfect my [air quotes] “hip-hop” beats. The shit I would make for Earl was different from what I would make for Domo, which was different from what I would make for myself. But with Earl it was always these super hip-hop beats that were kinda off and gross. With “Oldie,” I was just trying to perfect that. Super simple: chords, a bassline, maybe one little synth here and there, but just an ill drum break, whether I sampled it or looped it or whatever. I had that and I was like, “Yo, I just want n----s to rap on this. Let’s do an eight-minute posse cut.”

Domo Genesis (OF rapper): I didn’t record my verse the same day everybody else recorded theirs. I kinda knew there was a posse-cut situation going on, but I didn’t think it was gonna develop into what it became.

Tyler: I added my verse first. “Yo Hodgy, just gimme a 12, Jasper, gimme a 12— n----, I don’t rap! I know, that’s the beauty of it. Yo Frank, I need this. ” Like, everyone. Taco wasn’t gon’ put a verse, but I was like, “Just talk at the beginning, I need your voice on this.” Syd didn’t do a verse and Matt Martians didn’t, but the spirit was there.

Frank Ocean (OF singer and rapper): At the time I was learning how to put together rap verses. That song is one of the first couple verses I ever recorded.

Jasper Dolphin (OF rapper): I’mma be real with you: I don’t remember recording my verse. That was 11 years ago, I done been through so much, but it was probably just some normalness. I’d been on other songs randomly, so it was natural, normal. I’m guessing that’s how it was.

Mike G: We knew it was gonna be everybody except Earl—well, I wasn’t aware, so probably it was only Tyler and Earl who had known, maybe Taco also. They were collecting the verses, and I went to the studio by myself one day, recorded my verse.

Tyler: I was like, lemme cap this last verse off with what all this means. How it all came about. Not the song, but like, us. And that was it. It was bittersweet.

The final cut clocked in at 10:36 and featured appearances from (in chronological order) Taco, Tyler, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, Mike, Domo, Frank Ocean, Jasper, Earl, and Tyler again.

Part 2: The Promo Tour, a.k.a “The Rapper Rite of Passage”

On March 9, 2012, Odd Future embarked on a 17-date tour of the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Traveling with them was famed music video director/documentarian/ Jackass cinematographer Lance Bangs, who had met Tyler and Earl on Fairfax Avenue in L.A. a few years prior. They hit it off instantly, and Bangs soon became OF’s unofficial cameraman.

Lance Bangs (director): I was traveling with [Odd Future] and [ Vol. 2 ] had not officially been released yet. In March 2012 we were doing a run of shows, always kind of worrying about whether the album would leak or not. Hearing “Oldie” in the context of a van with all of them excited about what they made for the record was a great way to get to know the song.

That morning, we started at like nine in the morning. They went to Hot 97 to do a radio interview, and then from there we rode in a van to MTV at 11 a.m. where they got interviewed by Sway, and then at 3 p.m. they were going to do this photo shoot at Milk Studios with Terry Richardson.

Domo: That day was funny. I remember waking up and having a ton of stuff to do. There was so many things we had scheduled.

Mike G: That New York trip was a blur. Just doing the promo tour, ’cause that’s the rapper rite of passage. So goin’ up to Hot 97, it was a major moment. Just being there, in the mix, in the Sprinter, riding around the city—that was pretty wild.

Jasper: We was all in New York. It was like a lil’ takeover, it was tight.

Tyler: Everyone was there. Like, the whole squad. Not just the musicians, all our buddies just came from L.A. It was super warm, Thebe [ Editor’s note: Earl’s birth name is Thebe Kgositsile ] was back, it was such a moment.

Earl Sweatshirt (Odd Future rapper): It was kinda like sensory overload. I had gotten out of where I’d been for the past couple years, like not too long before. We were running around New York; it was an eventful day. A lot was goin’ on then.

After releasing his breakthrough mixtape in March 2010, Earl, then 16, abruptly stopped appearing on Odd Future material. For close to a year, the general public had no clue as to his whereabouts. Then in April 2011, Complex published an investigative article entitled “We Found Earl Sweatshirt , ” which revealed that the teenaged rapper’s mother had sent him to a school for at-risk youth in Samoa. Fans reacted by popularizing the slogan “Free Earl” (and, in some cases, “Fuck Earl’s Mom”). Earl wasn’t pleased .

Jacob Moore, founder and GM of the blog Pigeons & Planes , rapturously covered Odd Future’s every move in the early 2010s. “Back then, it was like anything’s worth a post, even if they just posted on Tumblr and it looked like they were making a music video,” he says. “Like, that’s a news post.” Moore also coauthored the Complex investigation , which he now says he has “mixed feelings” about. “I know it was a big story and it felt important, but it was also not something that I was super sure about, because it’s complicated and we didn’t know how Earl would feel about it.”

Whether the story was ethical or not, the response was indicative of how ravenous OF’s fans were. “Seeing how people reacted to Earl going missing and then coming back put it into perspective for me, because that just felt like such a huge thing that so many people cared about,” Moore says.

In March 2012, Earl was one of more than a dozen people mobbing around New York in the Odd Future entourage, which included OF Tape Vol. 2 cover star Lucas Vercetti, pro skater Na-Kel Smith, and Lionel Boyce, costar of the group’s Adult Swim sketch comedy series, Loiter Squad, which was co-executive produced by Bangs.

Bangs: Tyler went out of his way to bring all of the friends. Like, people that weren’t necessarily gonna be musically performing. He just wanted to have them there in New York. He was covering flights and hotels and having their assistants put everyone in vans to have the large collective there for everything in New York. That generosity and enthusiasm was something that really meant a lot to me and impressed me, that they were going out of their way to do that, rather than just, “OK, here’s the six people that we need to have microphones and that’s all.”

My memory is that we got [to Milk Studios] and Terry Richardson wasn’t there. It was an XXL cover shoot, but the photographer wasn’t there when we started. We were just having fun, I was shooting 16mm film as well as HD video stuff, and taking photos on my own. We were waiting for a while, and we were there before the people were really ready for us.

Domo: I remember getting to that studio and we were supposed to just do a photo shoot with Terry Richardson, but we were all foolin’ around and going crazy. It was just funny, we was doin’ a bunch of random shit.

Earl: It was all very surreal. I didn’t even know what was goin’ on. I remember we was at the XXL cover shoot and then literally at some point, n----s was just like, “Yo, we don’t want to do this. We just ‘bout to shoot this video.” It just felt like a cartoon, in the sense that n----s just was doin’ whatever they wanted to do.

Christian Clancy (OF manager): It was a little more hectic back then. I didn’t have any gray hair at that time. [ Laughs. ] But it was really cool, that was just a really fun day. I mean, there was some shit going on with XXL , but again, it was [Odd Future], so there was shit going on with wherever we were at that time.

Tyler: We did this XXL cover and that shit was a bust, bro. Like, not everyone could be on the cover ’cause not everyone was 21, but I had just turned 21. I was like, “Nah fuck that, that shit is weak.” That’s when I was super—I wasn’t a dick , but I was super vocal about things. I was like, “Either we all on it or we not! OK, fuck it, we’ll do this ”—we couldn’t figure it out. We kept getting into it with [ XXL editor-in-chief Vanessa Satten]—but it’s all good now, we just shot with her 10 years later . [ Editor’s note: Satten did not respond to requests for an interview for this piece. ]

Mike G: They were understandably trying to contain a group of rowdy kids, but we weren’t having it.

Tyler: Do you think I let someone else give me direction?

Part 3: “You Keep Filming! Fuck What They’re Saying!”

With things spiraling out of control, Odd Future members raided the studio’s prop closet, pulling out Super Soakers, monster masks, Thor’s hammer, and lightsabers. Richardson had arrived, but his plans for a traditional photo shoot were quickly upended.

Bangs: At some point, someone connected their iPhone with an aux cord to a built-in speaker and just started playing “Oldie.”

Domo: Lance just had his camera out, ’cause he was documenting that entire experience. I remember the camera being out and Terry Richardson trying to shoot these photos and get good looks. Someone puts the song on, and just super spur of the moment, everybody started rapping their verse, like from top to bottom, just performing to the camera, literally just for fun.

Mike G: So the song played, Lance started filming, and [I] snapped into the mode and realized what could potentially come out of this. Everybody excluding the XXL staff, of course. They were still trying to contain us for the shoot, but Clancy convinced them to at least let us do our thing, and they could try to capture the magic. So that was interesting how both of those things played out, and you see how they both came out. [ Editor’s note: Lil Wayne ended up on the cover of the May 2012 XXL issue featuring Richardson’s Odd Future photos. ]

Jasper: I’m pretty sure XXL wanted us to stop filming and do a photo shoot, but we just kept saying, “Keep rolling.” It was just a moment, it was great.

Tyler: They were being weird with the footage that Lance was shooting, because they wanted to keep it. They was like, “Stop shooting.” And at the beginning of the video you can hear me saying, “No, fuck that, Lance, keep shooting this shit,” or something.

Domo: Right in the beginning, Terry Richardson’s like, “Yo, I’m doing a photo shoot, can you stop shooting that?” or some shit like that—and this is what made me realize it was a moment, when Tyler said, “No, fuck that, film this .”

Tyler: You can see it on my face, everyone was just on edge. We put [“Oldie”] on, and I was like, “Yo, we just gon’ shoot this right here.” And in my head I’m like, “If this comes out sick, we’ll just put it out.” Because this was really the first time everyone’s together, and in my head I’m like, I’ve seen music documentaries, this might be the last time everyone’s together so we need to document this.

Clancy: No one knew that it was gonna happen five minutes before it started. The song was just playing, and Tyler’s little light bulb was like, “All right, fuck it.”

Frank: I remember being blindsided entirely by the idea!

Earl: I didn’t even really register what we were doing, it was just another extension of doin’ what n----s wanted to do.

Bangs: I had a pretty good unspoken ability to know where [Tyler] was about to head next, and that really came alive over the course of the rest of that performance. I mean, he’s not stopping anybody to be like, “OK everybody, we’re going to officially shoot the music video for ‘Oldie’ now. I need you standing here , when I get to this part you’re gonna do this ”—it’s all just unspoken.

Clancy: Lance was like family, the guys were so comfortable around him—that’s another part of this that was easy, ’cause you can’t just have some random dude shoot these guys. It would’ve been different. Every person who was involved in that, from the dude shooting it to them themselves, were just free from any bullshit.

Jasper: I don’t like the word vibes , but I guess it was all just good people in a room, in a space together.

Bangs: So I started filming, and Tyler’s opening verse is so strong and so compelling. It felt very comfortable and he played really well to the lens. And then I don’t think that Hodgy understood the moment, necessarily. Tyler sort of put him in front of the camera to do his verse, but he’s also drinking, and I don’t think he delivers every lyric. He does a few lines, but is also sipping his drink and looking around. And then Vyron [Left Brain] does his verse next, and then it’s after that the rest of the group start to realize like, “Oh, this is a moment. This is happening now.”

Tyler: The song was so new. Thebe had just finished his verse, and not everyone’s heard the thing, so some of us didn’t know our verses.

Domo: You can actually see it in the video, I didn’t actually realize what was happening until maybe like the second or third verse. And then I realized, “Oh wow, this is way more real than I thought.”

Mike G: I was one of the first to realize. Left Brain was around, Hodgy might’ve initiated it. Tyler was paying attention, but everybody was still running around. Everything around that time was realizing it could be something, but still being in the moment, you can’t see what it would grow to be.

Bangs: We go on through the verses, and [you can see] all the enthusiasm that the guys have for Mike G and for Domo. The camaraderie and the friendship was so fun to be a part of and to be traveling with them and filming that. We had Earl, who was freshly back from Samoa, and there was so much energy and excitement and curiosity from the fan base to see him. The buildup to when he was going to do that long set of bars that he does was something that I was very excited for.

Jacob Moore (founder/GM, Pigeons & Planes ): That was the first time we saw Earl [post-Samoa] and I think a lot of people assumed that his verse was an old one that they just got. And then he appeared in the video.

Bangs: There’s that great, subtle moment when Frank steps up and does his part, where he drops that recorded line from the song that the public had not heard yet—“I’m high and I’m bi / No wait, I’m straight” line—I caught Earl, his face lights up. I think he and Tyler knew at the time, I think Syd knew, but I don’t think the rest of the group knew. [ Editor’s note: Frank Ocean publicly discussed his sexuality through a note posted to Tumblr just over three months later , in July 2012. ] It’s a nice moment when that comes out of Frank. He doesn’t make a big deal about it.

Frank: I didn’t think anyone would blink at it, to be honest.

Tyler: You see everyone’s personality shine through when performing their verse. I have a broken arm, which shows how chaotic I used to be.

Bangs: I was with him when he broke his arm earlier in the tour, and he freaked out the person at the medical place by insisting on getting that bright pink fluorescent cast. They’re like, “People are gonna think you’re funny if you have this. You don’t want this.” And he’s like, “No no no, that’s the cast, that’s what I want.” So he’s got that, and he’d drawn the doughnut on that, so he knows to point at it all in perfect timing with the lyrics as he’s performing.

Tyler: You see Jasper do his verse and you see his little arms not know how to be a rapper, but he’s not a rapper so it just makes sense. When Frank comes on he’s clearly the older, mature one. You notice how we all look at him when he comes on, just that big brother figure that kept us grounded.

Frank: I was pretty bashful on camera back then. Even now, cameras can make me freeze up a little depending on my state of mind, or they can make it harder for me to spool up anything coherent in my brain. But I’m pretty clear-headed and not very shy at all in my day-to-day interactions.

Bangs: Then we get to this conclusion where Tyler looks for the people he needs and ropes in Clancy and Na-Kel, and he’s got them all within arm’s reach to grab them or embrace them or tap them at the moment that he’s referring to them in the lyrics. He even grabs the hat to show the box cutter logo . One take only, just a completely in-the-moment, shared dynamic that felt great.

Part 4: “Please Have That by Tomorrow”

Having cleared everyone else out of the frame, Tyler concludes his second verse: “So instead of critiquing and bitchin’, bein’ mad as fuck / Just admit, not only are we talented, we rad as fuck, bitches.” He forcibly pans Bangs’s camera to his right and leaps into a crowd of all of his friends.

Bangs: We knew right away this was something really special. In my work, I look for moments like that, where things come to life and there’s a connection with what you’re filming and a shared sense of expression and intuition, and it felt that way working with [Odd Future] in that particular moment. The video ends with Clancy turning to me, also in awe of what just happened, and he says to the camera, “Please have that by tomorrow.”

Clancy: It was pretty obvious that what happened was pretty sick. Thebe has a verse on it, we’re all in New York—no-brainer. The record came out the next day, so, sure . “Fuck yeah, get it done tonight. You don’t need to edit it.” [Tyler] knew what he was doing, so it didn’t need anything. If you edited it, it wouldn’t have been what it was.

Tyler: [Clancy] was watching from a real bird’s-eye, 30,000-feet-up, third-person view, since I was living in it. He saw the magic and was like, “No, put this shit out. ASAP.” So luckily it was more than one person on set who saw the magic in that, in context to the arguments and bullshit that went on that day.

Clancy: Tyler knows what the fuck he’s doing. I’m just here to sew up the loose ends.

Tyler: I’m like, “Lance, let’s watch that shit back. We don’t gotta edit shit! Just cut it, start it here, and end it here, and we uploading that shit tonight. N----, put that shit up .” And Lance was like, “Fuck it, OK!”

Bangs: I ran and jumped on a plane to Portland, Oregon, where I live, possibly even [directly] from that shoot. I was on a Delta flight from JFK to Portland with a P2 card reader, capturing the footage of what I’d shot and cutting it to the unreleased track of the song that hadn’t leaked out yet.

Tyler: That shit went up like, instantly. I think we put it out the next morning. We couldn’t get it out that night for some reason—it might’ve been YouTube clearance. That morning it went up and people were into it, just seeing us fuck around, unedited, just there.

Moore: That video feels spontaneous and DIY and not like they planned it all out and said, “This is part of a marketing rollout.” It was more just like, “We wanna do this, it’s cool, it’s creative, let’s do it.” It’s so different. I mean like, who’s doing 10-minute posse cuts? It felt like something that everybody had to watch when it came out. And once you watch through the whole thing and you feel them having fun, you feel like you’re a part of it. People have an emotional attachment to it.

Domo: That video is full of good-ass feelings. I think you can see how much fun that shit was on camera. The smiles and the laughs were contagious—you can feel that through the screen—just ’cause of how real that moment was. You can’t not smile watching that.

Bangs: It just felt alive and transcendent, and we were all floating three inches off the ground in this shared energy or moment.

Frank: It was a nice moment, this video, because we were all motivating each other. The atmosphere reminds me of how it feels to be in a room full of musicians where everyone is improvising and for a brief period it’s pure magic. It’s the same rush.

Earl: I don’t know if I ever really registered that [video] as what it might be for other people.

Clancy: That’s one of them rare, sick, magical moments that happens in the best way, because it just happens. Sometimes you plan shit too damn much. Tyler’s not the biggest planner, but the spontaneous shit, that was just them being them. It worked for me because they didn’t have time to think of what they would do or how they would look or get in their fuckin’ heads about shit—not that they would’ve, ’cause a lot of people say they don’t give a shit, but they actually didn’t give a shit. Literally just fun, no expectation, no nothing, not even knowing what the fuck was going on. That’s rare, especially in that genre where it’s so image [conscious]. That was the best representation of them as individuals to date, to me.

Moore: I remember that feeling like a big moment that confirmed that people really care about these kids. Like, they’re gonna be stars and they’re still doing it on their own terms.

Tyler: The record came out that day, and we did a show that night [at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York]. And man, that stage. Earl came out onstage, n----s didn’t know. Everyone was there, it was so awesome. The night before, we was just all skating through the city, everyone—Sage [Elsesser, a.k.a. Navy Blue], [skater] Sean Pablo, Na-Kel was there, me, Hodgy, Left Brain, Thebe, Jasper, Lucas—like we was mobbin’ through the city till 3 a.m., Lego[Head, OF affiliate] was there, Lee [Spielman], all of Trash Talk. It was such a fuckin’ moment, dude .

Earl: I feel like my experience is markedly different from everyone [else’s], ‘cause those were some of my first moments. That was my first show, later on that night, whereas everyone had been touring for the past three years. They were more exposed and had the privilege of even being jaded. Know what I mean? N----s was like, “Ugh, we gotta tour.” But the whole time I’m like, “Yoooo, this is the craziest shit ever .”

Part 5: “A Fuckin’ Balloon Popped That Night”

The “Oldie” video currently sits at just over 50 million views on YouTube, just over a third of the count for the OF channel’s all-time leader, Tyler’s shocking, star-making “Yonkers” clip. But for a marathon-length, zero-budget shoot, it’s done well for itself, outperforming many of the group’s more lavish music videos.

Befitting their mercurial nature, Odd Future never technically “broke up.” But aside from a few sporadic concerts in the following years, summer 2013 would be the last time they toured as a unit. Even those shows didn’t have the full “Oldie” video squad present. But as the past decade has shown, OF alumni’s success never hinged on the group staying together. The personalities on full display in the “Oldie” video have grown even more vibrant as each member has matured. Tyler’s solo work has made him a perennial Grammy fixture, his one win—a Best Rap Album trophy for 2019’s Igor —even sparking debates within the industry about the award show’s genre categorization. Despite how infrequently he releases music, Frank Ocean became one of the most critically adored acts of the 2010s thanks to his albums Channel Orange and Blonde . Earl has burrowed further into art-damaged boom-bap and remains a cult hero. Taco—now better known by his birth name, Travis Bennett—stars in the FX comedy Dave . Na-Kel’s now better known for his acting and rapping than his skating. Jasper, Travis, Tyler, and Lionel have continued to work with Bangs, both on Loiter Squad and, most recently, Jackass Forever. If anything, the Odd Future story illustrates how to succeed on your own terms while still lifting up those around you.

Tyler: The night after [the video shoot] when we all performed was like the peak of us. That was like it. Like, a fuckin’ balloon popped that night, and we all went in our own directions. That was the last time we was all together like that. Still.

Frank: I can recall it all pretty easily in my memory or in yours or in Tyler’s. He remembers all this stuff even better than me.

Clancy: I don’t wanna sound old, but I’ve been around a few things. Having everyone together in one place—as you get older that happens less, right? It’s kind of inevitable, growing up, personalities, you know. People got wives and kids, they’re doing shit, whatever. So I feel [Tyler] on that. That was one of the last moments of pure freedom amongst friends, in retrospect.

Domo: It had a certain feeling where this was, not the peak, but the epitome of what the whole [Odd Future] thing was, with everyone included. If I had to explain to somebody who everyone was, and what everyone’s role was, and what they did, and the sound that they brought to the table at its full strength, I believe that was the best example of it. At the time, I didn’t feel any closure or anything like that. I was just so into the moment. It does feel that way looking back, though.

Earl: We did some more OF stuff after that, I distinctly remember. There was a Texas tour , there was Europe dates we did and shit.

Mike G: I can’t say [it felt like the end of OF], ’cause we had the Odd Future tour overseas after that. If we’re getting to that moment, it would really be opening for Eminem at Wembley Stadium [in July 2014]. That makes the most sense to me as the moment when everyone started moving towards their own trajectories.

Bangs: From early on, Tyler was such a charismatic person that made things come together. His energy brought people to him, and then he amplified other people around him. He was generous with sharing attention and trying to put light on all these other people that he had bonded with over internet message boards or in person in California. That generosity was something that was really evident to me, but it also felt like a volatile combination of people who were in different places in their lives. It was rare for these moments where we had Frank and Syd and Mellowhype and everyone all in one place to do something together. I was aware in the moment that this wasn’t something that was gonna be recurring 10 more times in the future, that this might be the peak moment of everyone being in the same room with me filming and making a moment happen.

Tyler: That’s just what being a fuckin’ kid is, just being young, your teenage years, your super early 20s, it’s more spontaneous and fun. We wasn’t trying to be cool. We wasn’t trying to be like, “Nah, we too cool for that,” and stand with a hand on our wrist for the posed photo. That’s not what we was about. We was just us. And I think that’s what everyone gravitated to, and you can fully see that in the video, it’s the end result of all of that.

Jasper: I actually watched it with my girlfriend recently and it was pretty funny ’cause we all look so young in there, and now we all old farts in our 30s. I was on YouTube, and then somehow I got into a loophole of Odd Future stuff, and somehow we just ran it all the way up, from just random videos, to the videos of me getting attacked on Snapchat , just everything that was happening back then.

Tyler: [It was a] cultural moment that I didn’t realize at the time, because we felt so outcast and misunderstood and didn’t think about how important we’re gonna be in shaping what rap music is going to slowly turn into for the years to come. Since day one, I’ve always had a—I don’t wanna sound like a fuckin’ Twitter—but I’ve always had a vision of things, especially from that era. Even the stupid Lucas hoodie, just all of it. I’ve always had this bigger picture. And that was one of the moments where, in real time, I got to zoom out and say, “Oh shit, no this is great. Film this, Lance! You keep fuckin’ filmin’!”

Tyler Gregory Okonma better known by his stage name Tyler, The Creator, is an American rapper and record producer from California.

Tyler showed an interest to music from an incredibly young age, at the age of seven, he would take the cover out of an album's case and create covers for his own imaginary albums including a track list with song times before he could even make music. At fourteen, he taught himself to play the piano and music became a constant in his ever changing home life, he attended twelve different schools over his twelve year education.

On December 25, 2009, Tyler self released his first album entitled 'Bastard' which went on to receive rave reviews from critics, including Pitchfork Media who placed it at #32 on their top 100 albums of the year list. He followed this up with 'Goblin' which secured him a one album deal with XL Recordings. His next album 'Wolf' was released in 2013 and was produced solely by Tyler, featuring guest appearances from Frank Ocean, Mike G, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, Left Brain and Hodgy Beats.

Tyler has found himself at the centre of negative media attention for his use of homophobic slurs, frequently the use of the epithet faggot in his lyrics and on social media. He personally denied the accusations of homophobia, stating, "I'm not homophobic. I just say faggot and use gay as an adjective to describe stupid shit," and, "I'm not homophobic. I just think faggot hits and hurts people". He appears to understand very little of the impact of his derogatory use of language. However Tyler, The Creator was the first to openly show support for fellow Odd Future member Frank Ocean after he revealed he had a relationship with another younger man. The young rapper has managed to collect a number of nominations at the MTV Music Video Awards, along with acclaim for his solo discography and work within Odd Future despite numerous controversies surrounding his lyrical content.

Live reviews

I have been a fan of Tyler for a long time, as well as the whole group of OFWGKTA, and seeing him live was something I had on my bucket list. I went in with high expectations for his show, already knowing of how much energy and enthusiasm he puts into his live performances. What I got at The Forum went above and beyond anything I could have hoped for. The crowd was amazing, knowing every song and shouting and yelling along with unrivaled amounts of energy. Tyler was just as, or even more, energetic and knew how to work the crowd perfectly by interaction, be it between moments talking about random things or talking about his music and singing. I was blown away by the fact that at least twice he called to stop the song just to start it again because he loved how into it the crowd was and wanted to see it again. Of course we, the crowd, loved it and drained our lungs out with every lyric. I've seen the Arctic Monkeys, Sleigh Bells, Banks, Pendulum, Wolf Alice and others and can honestly say Tyler was the best overall. Everyone exited the venue with shirts soaked in sweat and with cracking voices, with grins on their face from having experienced something they'd never forget. If you like Tyler, or by extension OFWGKTA, you have to see him live if you get the opportunity, you can never anticipate how godly his live performances will be. I will definitely be waiting for his next visit to see him again.

The show started almost on time with a short DJ warm up by Taco and quickly two other Odd Future boys - Tyler himself and Jasper Dolphin - entered the stage. Tyler performed both old and new songs, mostly his upbeat hits and in between songs he'd converse with the crowd in his own down to earth way. Tyler is an amazing performer, he knows when the crowd gets too hot and needs a break or when we need a little bit more jumping to liven up the mood. The concert was intimate despite it being sold out because of Tylers genuine and unique personality and he almost makes it sound like he's speaking to a bunch of friends rather than a bunch of sweaty fans. The concert lasted for about an hour and a half. I was front row on the ground and it was wild at times and very crowded, so if that's something you do not like; go to the balconies instead (the people I was with chose to do that and says it is more calm) because with an audience mostly consisting of semi-drunk teenage boys, it is bound to go a bit crazy at times. But as I mentioned, Tyler and the two other boys were very aware of how we as an audience were feeling and you felt safe. To sum it up, it was a very intimate and very much how you would expect it to be, if you have followed Tyler as a fan for a while concert and definitely in my top best concerts ever. A must for fans of him and OFWGKTA.

To be quite honest, I am not the most hardcore fan of Yellowcard and I only know a few of their earlier songs. Regardless of that, however, I actually had quite a lot of fun at their gig at Fuji Rock Festival 2013 last summer. I think their strong fan base all over the world and how they can really rally up a crowd is one aspect that makes this band so fun to watch live. The fans really get wild and stay wild for the entire concert as soon as the band walks on the stage. The crowd just crowd surf each other and go absolutely nuts and it's an entertaining sight! The bands music is extremely loud and you can hear it throughout the entire venue and I feel that Yellowcard represents a lot of what rock is about nowadays. It's about making music that allows for everybody Iistening to come together and enjoy the music and the festival vibe and I think Yellowcard did a good job of that in my opinion despite not knowing much about them! Yellowcard is definitely a great concert for those who want to go apeshit with the influence of rock!

The doors opened at 20:30.

The timetable said the show will start at 22:00 but taco's set started at 22:00.

The bass and sound setup was good and wasn't to hard.

When Tyler came on stage, Everybody went crazy. There where moshpits the hole show.

The biggest moshpit was at the last song Cherry Bomb.

Tyler did it pretty good on stage. Sometimes he had to take a break because his astma. But Taco and Jasper continued the song if that happened.

Me and my friend visited the movie he organised in the afternoon so we got priority for the show. This was good because it wasn't that busy at the merchandise store . When the other people came in, I'm sure I couldn't get the Cherry Bomb 6 panel. After the show they sold out.

Because the delay of the show we missed our last train so we spend our night at the station. Maybe thats a tip for the next time. Do the show a bit earlier!

But after all it was amazing!

Amazing experience... Taco was an amazing DJ doing a great job of hyping the crowd up. Then Vince came out and killed it just a great set. the stage design was like no other the rotating screens were really cool and it was nice that they put timers up so we knew when Vince would come out. Tyler's performance was just amazing he performed for 2 1/2 hours and he really is a great performer, he performed both old and new songs there wasn't a favorite of mine that he missed. The stage design was so cool with a huge tree for Tyler to stand on. Tyler really cares about his fans he sang happy birthday to this one dude which was so sick. The show was sold out so 2,400 people were all singing the words to his songs which was just amazing the best concert experience I have ever had I have to go see him live again.

Okay, so straight up, the venue kinda sucked. Tyler was playing The Forum, in London. The venue itself was pretty decent, big floor space and actually a decent amount of room. The security were pretty cool too. Only problem is, before Tyler goes on, they turn off the fans keeping the place cool, so for the next two hours, it is boiling, like people are walking around soaked in sweat. BUT TYLER was amazing. The videos on Youtube and junk do him no justice, he was awesome. Taco came on and DJ'd to get everyone hyped which was awesome. Tyler was talking to the crowd and it was wild. He played all his decent songs, playing stuff from all three albums, and everyone fucking loved it. The crowd were sick too, everyone in GOLF shit, 10/10 performance. (Wish he had played Sandwitches though)

Man Oh Man is Tyler AWESOME OR WHAT? I can honestly say that Tyler fans are the most energetic fans I've ever seen, me included haha. I've never been in a mosh pit that was this crazy before, and I loved every second of it. You will not regret going to see Tyler because he is just that awesome. This was my first time seeing him in concert and I was super happy at how approachable and funny he was. He knows how to work the crowd and how to get literally every last person on their feet and stomping the roof off of the building. I can’t wait until he come the SF again. Tyler I’m waiting for you!!

P.S - HE BROUGHT TACO AND JASPER!!!!!

I loved every min of his performance.. I loved and appreciated the re-verb of ''tell these black kids they can be who they are'' means so much to us. And I know this isn't his favorite album and It didn't come out as this ''star studded'' album. But there's no one couldn't have said it better than Tyler at this time. So I want to thank him for that. Maybe he will finally be able to score a movie that would be so !!!!

From a guy who’s grown up with Tyler and used his music to get through rough patches and hard times after waiting 8 years to see him live, I can honestly say it was the greatest thing I’ve ever experienced. I’ve never been happier in life than I was that night, stood from my seat the entire time and went word for word with Tyler himself to all the songs he performed Is something I could only dream of. I plan on going every year for as long as he continue touring from now on.

Rex Orange County opened with dope beach vibes then later joined in on "Boredom". After Rex finished, Tyler carried the show alone reflecting the energy of the whole crowd. He is a lightening storm on stage. He said that one of his goals on this tour is to see the crowd dance and his beats strongly reflect that sentiment. If you find yourself lucky at one of his shows, do yourself a favor; wear sneakers and don't bring your drink into the mosh pit, you're in for a treat.

We're F**kin' Radical, been F**kin' Awesome 我们太TMD激进,太TMD耀眼 Talked a lotta sh*t so far words you're at a loss

OF.jpg

Odd Future (AKA OFGWKTA which means“ Odd Future Golf Wang Kill Them All ”)是一个在2006-2007年间于洛杉矶由一群滑板青年和音乐爱好者成立的一个说唱团体。

2007年的最初的成员有:Tyler, the Creator、Hodgy Beats、Left Brain、Pyramid Vritra、Jasper Dolphin、Matt Martians 以及 Casey Veggies。

就像 Odd Future 的首张Mixtape《 The Odd Future Tape 》的 Intro 中的歌词:

Starring 主演 Casey V,Hodgy Beats,Left Brain,Super 3, and Tyler, the Creator Give it up! Give it up for 'em!

odd future tour

OFF.jpg

1. All About Me(2017)

2. Over(2017)

odd future tour

odd future tour

1. Come And Go(2013)

2. All Eyez On Me(2019)

自己也发行了《 Mind Gone, Vol. 2: Gone, Never Forgotten 》以及与 LNDN DRGS 和 Jay Worthy 的合作专辑《 Brain on DRGS 》。

odd future tour

1. Based Freestyle(2018)

2. Dodgers(2018)

odd future tour

1. Drain(2012)

2. Barrel(2019)

The Jet Age of Tomorrow (AKA The Super 3)。 个人也发行了专辑《The Drum Chord Theory》和《The Last Party》。

Odd Future ,

odd future tour

odd future tour

odd future tour

1. Can I Hold Your Hand?!(2010)

2. Juney Junes(2013)

3. One Take(2013)

odd future tour

odd future tour

1. Awake(2011)

2. Reasons(2012)

3. Amnesiatic(2014)

Although it's no more, the 7 letters are forever.

当然 Tyler 都说“ It's no more ”了,事情肯定没有这么简单,OF 成员 Matt Martians 在6月表示“No hard feelings among the members of OFWGKTA.”

LS.png

这次音乐节 Tyler 因为有个人演出的原因没有参加,Earl 因为在准备专辑《 I Don't Like Sh*t, I Don't Go Outside 》所以也没有参加。

odd future tour

N***** got me f**ked up. I put too many n***** on, I helped too many of my motherf**king friends out, and n***** gonna come foul? You know who the f**k I'm talking about, n****. And yes, it's real.

If wasn't for Odd Future, where would Tyler be? Think about who built the name OF together as a unit. Now think about who took the first initial sh*t on OF.

odd future tour

I couldn't talk to any of them about it. We weren't all that close, and they never seemed to want to hear it.

The gay community hated me for being part of OF. They thought OF was homophobic because they tend to use homophobic slang, and they were like:'How can you work for and support homophobies?'But they aren't homophobic. They just don't really care whether you're offended or not.”

They weren't happy about it, I was their get-out-of-jail-free card. It's easier to say they aren't homophobic because Syd is there.

odd future tour

She went with her gut, and it worked out.

之后 Tyler 和 The Internet 签约了 Sony 旗下的 Columbia Records,Domo Genesis 和 Left Brain 签约了 Empire Distribution,Trash Talk 成立了自己的 Trash Talk Collective……

odd future tour

N***** grow. I just want everyone to shine. And I hope everyone takes the opportunities that they have thrown at them and get out of their head. Sometimes I think people are in their head too much and never take a step and just look.

So although it's no more, the 7 letters are forever.

2024 Masters picks, odds: Expert predictions, favorites to win from Augusta National betting field

Who will win the 88th masters our experts dive into all the twists and turns of the year's greatest major.

expert-picks.png

With the 88th Masters fast approaching, the key question everyone's asking is the same across the golf world: Who are you picking to win this year at Augusta National? With an extraordinary field featuring the best professionals and many of the top amateurs in the world, the first major championship of 2024 should be an epic ride from Thursday's first round through the awarding of the green jacket early Sunday evening.

While the Masters field is stacked, the last two champions -- Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm -- are riding momentum into the tournament. Rahm is seeking to become the first golfer to win consecutive green jackets since Tiger Woods, while Scheffler's blistering play has him standing as the clear favorite to win twice at Augusta National in a three-year span. Unlike two years ago when there were no single-digit favorites entering the Masters, Scheffler holds that distinction at 9/2.

Rahm and Rory McIlroy follow at 11-1 with the latter still seeking his first green jacket. Should he achieve it, the long-desired career grand slam would finally be complete for McIlroy.

There are plenty of golfers behind them who will surely be in contention, including Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland, all of whom are among the top players on the odds board. Check out the full slate of Round 1 tee times and groupings scheduled for the Masters on Thursday, and plan your day with our Masters TV schedule and coverage guide .

Round 1 has seen a delayed start due to inclement weather, but you can follow live updates in our 2024 Masters leaderboard and coverage center.

And then there's the duo of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the former making the cut the last two years only for his body to fail him entering the weekend. Tiger stands at 140-0 entering the Masters, while Mickelson (despite playing more frequently) is 200-1.

So, what is going to happen at Augusta National this week? Let's take a look at a full set of predictions and picks from our CBS Sports experts as we attempt to project who will win -- and what will happen -- at the most prestigious golf tournament in the world.

Watch all four rounds of the 2024 Masters starting Thursday with  Masters Live  as we follow the best golfers in the world through Augusta National with  Featured Groups , check in at the famed  Amen Corner  and see leaders round the turn on  holes 15 & 16 . 2024 Masters expert picks, predictions

Kyle Porter, senior golf writer

Winner -- Scottie Scheffler (4-1): I tried as hard as I could to pick somebody other than Scheffler, but after listening to Viktor Hovland talk about how disciplined a player needs to be with his irons and where he misses -- and then combining that with the outrageous level at which Scheffler is playing (again, he's at 3.2 strokes gained tee to green per round this year while only one other golfer is over 2.0) -- it sure does seem like Scheffler will get a second green jacket.

Sleeper -- Cameron Young (50-1): There are a lot of golfers in the 45-1 to 60-1 range that I love, including Sahith Theegala, Russell Henley, Si Woo Kim and Shane Lowry. But I love Young the most. Why? He's playing good golf (he narrowly lost the Valspar Championship and is fifth in the world in ball striking this year) and has been awesome at major championships, including a top 10 at Augusta last year.

Top 10 lock -- Hideki Matsuyama: Matsuyama's history at Augusta National is underrated. He has not missed a cut since 2014, has four consecutive top 20s and is playing as well as anyone in the world this year not named "Scheffler." He's flying in under the radar and is the best top 10 value in the field.

Star who definitely won't win -- Jon Rahm: It's difficult to go back to back at any major, much less a Masters, where there are extraordinary responsibilities for a defending champion. Rahm's vibe on Tuesday was not exactly jubilant, either; he had to field questions about the Official World Golf Rankings, his move to LIV Golf and whether he thought that move was going to bring LIV and the PGA Tour back together. There was something a bit ... off with him, and I don't think that's going to translate very well in his title defense. That said ... I put him in this space last year, and he proved me wrong.

Scottie Scheffler vs. Jon Rahm: Scheffler by a mile. He has lost to one golfer in his last three events, and for all the reasons outlined above, Rahm's disposition is a bit of a concern for me right now.

Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson: Mickelson, but it's close. This one is difficult. Tiger is apparently hitting the golf ball well, but I can't trust that he's going to finish the tournament given he's only completed one major since the 2020 PGA Championship.

Surprise prediction -- Par is good: In recent years, despite course changes, scoring has been probably easier than many of us would prefer. For the first time in tournament history, double digits under par has won this event six years in a row. The golf course is apparently firmer this year -- Xander Schauffele talked about balls "tomahawking" over greens earlier in the week -- which means that if you shoot four 72s, you should actually be in a decent spot.

Lowest round: 66 (-6) Winning score: 280 (-8) Winner's Sunday score: 70 (-2)

Patrick McDonald, golf writer

Winner -- Xander Schauffele (16-1): I've done the mental gymnastics and concluded that losing Tthe Players Championship was the best thing to happen to Schauffele's Masters chances. His new swing was put under the microscope at TPC Sawgrass, and we identified what his misses were when under the gun. That experience should pay dividends this week as he has statistically been the second-best player in the world this season and has plenty of history around Augusta National with a couple of close calls.

Sleeper -- Chris Kirk (200-1): We have seen a number of Masters winners find success at Kapalua (just look at Rahm last year), and Kirk could follow suit. The Georgia Bulldog's numbers since his win in the season opener don't jump off the page, but they remain sound. He's driving the ball as well as ever and his short game is vastly underrated. He will need his iron play to return to peak levels, but it's not out of the realm of possibilities for the man who finished T23 in last year's Masters.

Top 10 lock -- Scottie Scheffler: There's no need to overthink this. Scheffler is the best player in the world by a wide margin and should have a realistic chance come Sunday to slip on his second green jacket. He got absolutely nothing out of his putter at Augusta National last year and still finished in a share for 10th. That same tee-to-green prowess should show up, and if a slightly cooperative putter makes the trip, then Scheffler may be the one in Butler Cabin at week's end.

Star who definitely won't win -- Viktor Hovland: The full swing isn't there and the short game isn't there. I'm no rocket scientist, but that doesn't sound like a great combination. Hovland has yet to crack the top 10 this season and ranks 183rd in strokes gained around the green out of 183 PGA Tour players. His streak of five straight major top 20s will be in jeopardy.

Scottie Scheffler vs. Jon Rahm: Give me Scheffler. The world No. 1 won't have to deal with hosting the Champions Dinner like Rahm and will roll into Thursday's action refreshed and ready to go. These two players are among the highest in strokes gained total at Augusta National, but it seems like Scheffler's floor is a hair higher than Rahm's at the moment.

Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson: Tiger goes for a record 24th straight made cut at the Masters, while Mickelson will aim to recapture the magic of 2023 when he finished runner up to Rahm. We have only seen Woods play 25 holes this year, so it's tough to have any sense of confidence about his form and makes me believe Mickelson will have the upper hand this year. Both players will use their extensive experience to their advantage to make their way into the weekend, but neither will seriously be a factor.

Surprise prediction -- Rory McIlroy is in the mix on the second nine on Sunday: Despite a bevy of nice finishes at Augusta, McIlroy has only had one great opportunity to complete the career grand slam. That came in 2018. I love that he didn't arrive at Augusta National until later in the week, and his quality took another step in the right direction at the Texas Open. There are still questions about the quick left miss off the tee and his approach play, but I bet they get ironed out and McIlroy gives himself a real chance at joining golf's most exclusive club.

Lowest round: 65 (-7) Winning score: 277 (-11) Winner's Sunday score: 70 (-2)

Adam Silverstein, director of editorial

Winner -- Jordan Spieth (25-1): Is Scheffler more likely to win this Masters than anyone else in the field? Yes, of course. The odds tell that story. But as Kyle wrote this week , there are few courses or tournaments in the nation as sticky this one -- and Spieth is one of the best playing here. Spieth's strokes gained at Augusta National (2.81) is second only to Rahm (2.84) among golfers who have played at least four Masters over the last 10 years. That's 0.01 ahead of Scheffler (2.80). He was just a couple strokes shy of winning three straight Masters (2014-16) and has three top-four finishes in the seven he's played since with a T4 last year. He also has momentum coming in with a T10 finish at the Texas Open, though to be fair, he did miss the cut in consecutive events prior. Still, his likelihood of winning is nearly as strong as either Scheffler or Rahm, and his odds are six times as great as the former.

Sleeper -- Justin Rose (130-1):  Speaking of quality golfers on this course, Rose is quite an option. He only has two modes at Augusta National: contention or the weekend back home. The 43-year-old has not won on the PGA Tour in a year, but he knows this course like the back of his hand. with six top 10s and two runner-ups, though those came nearly a decade ago. He has not won a major since 2013 yet frequently seems to be in contention with four top 10s in the last 13 he's played. Is he going to win the Masters? Probably not. But experience at Augusta matters, and throwing some beer money on Rose is a play that's ... better than most.

Top 10 lock -- Scottie Scheffler: The benefit of not picking Scheffler to win is that he can slide in right here with the utmost confidence. Scheffler has not finished outside the top 10 at a tournament since Jan. 21; he's placed among the top of the leaderboard in six straight events and enters the Masters going Win, Win, T2 in March. He ran into the top 10 last year after winning in 2022, and get this, has placed inside the top 10 across nine of his last 13 majors (69%). There's no way anyone in the field has a better percentage than that.

Star who definitely won't win -- Justin Thomas: Hopefully this is a reverse jinx situation for J.T., because it truly feels as if he should have won a Masters already given his skill and mastery of this course. The problem may be that he just wants it so much. Thomas missed the cut last year playing alongside idol Tiger Woods; luckily, that won't be the case this year, so he should be able to relax a bit. He is debuting a new bag man after splitting with Jim "Bones" Mackay.

Scottie Scheffler vs. Jon Rahm: There's a general belief around Augusta National that Rahm is feeling the pressure given his controversial move to LIV Golf, serving as the reigning champion, hosting the Champions Dinner, etc. Maybe true; maybe not. What I do know is that there may be no golfer who enters an event feeling less pressure these days than Scheffler, and given the aforementioned streak he's running, it would almost be foolish to take Rahm in this head-to-head.

Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson: Speaking of general beliefs around Augusta, there is a lack of it in Woods. You know, the guy with five green jackets. The guy who who has made 19 straight cuts at Augusta National (never missing one) as a professional. The guy who won this event just five years ago. OK, Tiger's body is falling apart; he said this week that he " hurt[s] every day ." What doesn't hurt, apparently, is his surgically repaired ankle. Nor does his mind, which understands the hills and valleys, the cut of the greens and how to transverse this course better than anyone in the world. Not only do I have Tiger over Phil, I have him over another rival, Sergio Garcia, too.

Surprise prediction -- Rory McIlroy backdoors his way to a top-five finish:  The 2024 season has not been overly kind to McIlroy, nor has Augusta National over the years, as he's alternated between top-five finishes and missed cuts over the last four Masters. He has seven top 10s here since 2014 and seven top 10s in his last eight majors. It's unlikely that Rory wins at Augusta until he figures out a way to stop wanting it so badly. That sounds asinine, but we've seen that want be his undoing at countless events. Where he thrives at the Masters is when he plays from behind and has nothing to lose.

Lowest round:  65 (-7) Winning score:  278 (-12) Winner's Sunday score:  69 (-3)
