One Piece Releases Creator's "Secret Notebook of Ideas" Featuring Luffy Before the Manga

The official synopsis for the epic Episode 1071 reads: "Bouncing on the ground and becoming a giant, Luffy enjoys his new, bizarre power while Kaido is bewildered and can’t make sense of it. Meanwhile, Kid, Law, and Luffy’s other allies continue the fight down below against flames and enemies alike, waiting for Luffy to emerge victorious." Fans had previously gotten their first sneak peek of the episode at IGN Fan Fest, which can be seen above.

One Piece's Gear 5 Luffy Reveal Is One of the Anime's Most Celebrated Episodes

The Gear 5 episode was among the most anticipated One Piece episodes ever when it released in English subbed form, "breaking the Internet" upon launch . Crunchyroll itself called it a "Crunchyroll-crashing event," with hundreds of thousands of fans clamoring to watch Luffy ascend to new heights. Luffy's birthday becomes even more special with 2024 marking the One Piece anime's 25th year of airing; the anniversary game One Piece Odyssey just got its Nintendo Switch release date , comprising just one of many projects planned for the year.

Dragon Ball's First Editor Claimed One Piece Would Never Become Popular

With a course charted for the treacherous waters of the Grand Line and beyond, this is one captain who'll never give up until he's claimed the greatest treasure on Earth: the Legendary One Piece!"

Follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew in order to find the greatest treasure ever left by the legendary Pirate, Gold Roger. The famous mystery treasure named "One Piece".

One Piece Treasure Cruise is an RPG video game. It follows the plot of the manga from Luffy 's childhood to Whole Cake Island , however, more of the manga's story is added periodically. There are also many extra quests based on later parts of the manga and filler from the anime. [1] [2] [3]

Gameplay [ ]

General [ ].

Treasure Cruise follows the standard turn-based gameplay of traditional RPGs. The game proceeds through a variety of islands based on the different story arcs of the series. Each island contains a number of different levels where the player fights hordes of enemies.

Crew Information [ ]

The player can organize up to eight crews with the playable characters they acquire as they progress through the story,  gacha  pulls and various promotions. They can put up to six people in each crew, and can also sacrifice the generic playable enemy and animal characters to increase the levels of and evolve other characters.

One Piece Treasure Cruise features simple tap controls. An attack is initiated by tapping any character in the lower part of the screen, and tapping other characters at the right time forms combos and deals extra damage. The combos are "miss", "good", "great", and "perfect". Also, the player can have a chain attack boost for getting good, great, and perfect. Many characters possess unique special abilities that can to help turn the battle in the player's favor.

Characters [ ]

Almost all characters that are present in gameplay are acquirable as playable characters. The only exception so far is Frieza , who was available in a past crossover event. Most characters also come in many different versions depending on what part of the manga they come from, or different promotional events.

Screen Rant

Luffy’s gear 5 isn’t just his strongest form, it’s a symbol of what makes one piece such a unique series.

The cartoon-like nature of Luffy's Gear 5 transformation is a perfect embodiment of what makes One Piece so special among Shonen anime.

  • Luffy's Gear 5 form is a blend of power and silliness, embracing the cartoonish side of One Piece.
  • When creating this form, Oda made sure to incorporate hope, happiness, creativity, and positivity into it, all key aspects of One Piece.
  • Gear 5 defies shonen traditions by drawing power from positive emotions and emphasizing freedom.

Luffy’s awakened form, better known as Gear 5 , has become one of the most iconic abilities in One Piece . This skill turns Luffy into one of the most powerful beings alive, as well as one of the silliest. When in Gear 5 form, Luffy turns into the closest thing to a cartoon character that exists in One Piece . This may seem bizarre to outsiders, as most shonen anime transformations tend to be extremely serious.

Yet, Luffy’s Gear 5 being such a jovial and comical form makes perfect sense for the world of One Piece . This transformation is a perfect representation of the themes that separate Eiichiro Oda’s creation from other series of the same genre.

Instead of letting go of the childish joy that Luffy had when he began his adventure, like what happens with protagonists like Naruto or Gon, he embraces it, turning it into a strength rather than a weakness.

The Real Reason Gear 5 Luffy Beat Kaido Proves Who is Truly One Piece's Strongest

One piece has always been more jovial than other anime, one piece created by eiichiro oda, anime adaptation produced by toei animation.

Oda has always been a master at mixing serious and lighthearted moments.

Since the beginning of the series, One Piece has distinguished itself from other shonen due to its chipper world. The character designs are not as rigid as in other anime, the Devil Fruit powers do not follow such strict rules as other abilities, and reality blends with fantasy in almost every corner of the world . This does not mean that the series is not serious whenever it needs to. Ace’s death in episode 483 is still one of the most shocking moments in anime.

Still, Oda has always been a master at mixing serious and lighthearted moments. Gear 5 is a perfect example of this, as it is extremely serious in being Luffy’s most powerful form, which he uses to fight imposing opponents, while being incredibly goofy at the same time. Luffy’s fight with Kaido between episodes 1071 and 1076 of the anime is by far one of the series' most important events and still manages to be one of the funniest. The cartoon-like powers the Straw Hat captain possesses, while in Gear 5, welcome the young man’s unrivaled optimism and carefree attitude.

Luffy’s Child-like Joy Makes Him Exceedingly Powerful

His unmatched optimism grants him strength.

Unlike many other anime protagonists who begin their stories as cheerful young heroes and become harsher as they suffer, Luffy has never let go of the glee being a pirate granted him . In spite of all he has lost and the difficult battles he has been a part of, Luffy is still the same easygoing young man who left Foosha Village to follow his dreams. He has still matured and understands that not everything in the world will work as he imagined as a child, but that has not impeded him from enjoying life to its fullest.

It is this unmatched optimism and passion that turn Luffy into such a terrifying opponent to face. No matter who he is facing, as long as he has friends to give him hope and a dream to fight for, Luffy will never give up and will never stop smiling . Gear 5 is the culmination of the Straw Hat captain’s endless joy of life, manifesting itself as the power to turn the world around him into a cartoon that brings happiness to those around him. No one else could hold this amount of power, as only Luffy seems to have the childlike imagination and wonder needed to use it effectively.

One Piece Confirms Gear 5's One Weakness That Proves Luffy Isn't Invincible

Gear 5 luffy goes against shonen tradition in the best way, luffy’s transformation is powered by positive emotions.

While not the first time that a power-up was granted to a protagonist based on positive emotions, Gear 5 is one of the most successful and iconic.

For years, shonen transformations have been powered by emotions considered negative by most. Dragon Ball ’s Super Saiyan was possible due to the immense rage Goku was feeling after Frieza killed his best friend. Naruto’s Nine-tail form was first released whenever he was desperate to win a fight or furious. Even Gon’s most powerful transformation came to be due to the young boy becoming enraged with Neferpitou. Power in shonen is often associated with anger , as this emotion tends to make a person lose their inhibitions and stop holding back their strength.

Gear 5 goes against all this, becoming a manifestation of Luffy’s feelings of freedom and happiness during a fight. The transformation does not attempt to make the young pirate lose control of his emotions or his abilities, instead granting him control of his environment to the point where his cartoonish abilities affect even his enemies. While not the first time that a power-up was granted to a protagonist based on positive emotions, Gear 5 is one of the most successful and iconic.

Luffy’s Is Truly The Freest Being In One Piece

There is none less bound by rules than cartoons.

Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation is said to be based on the legend of the Sun God Nika , who was considered a bringer of freedom for slaves and oppressed individuals. The fact that a form designed around a deity who brings liberty is a cartoon character is a brilliant decision made by Oda. Even in a world as magical and fantastic as One Piece ’s, there are still several rules that apply to the individuals inhabiting it. Not even pirates can go against the forces of nature, even when they can command them to a certain extent.

A cartoon character is not bound by any laws nor by reality itself . When in Gear 5, the only limits of the protagonist's freedom are set by his imagination. This nigh-limitless freedom is what makes Nika’s avatar’s power so frightening to Luffy’s enemies but comforting to his allies. When creating this form, Oda made sure to incorporate hope, happiness, creativity, and positivity into it. All these aspects are what makes One Piece such a beloved series, capable of brightening the day of anyone who gives it a chance .

The Gear 5 form may not be the first transformation in shonen to have such a distinctive power set, but it is arguably among the most iconic and relevant. This skill is an amazing representation of the kind of hero that Luffy is, one who is not bound by negativity or rejection, but rather joy and freedom. It is the perfect example of why One Piece holds such a special place in the hearts of the millions of fans who follow Luffy’s journey.

Crystal Skulls

  • Edit source
  • View history

Crystal Skulls are needed to Super-Evolve a character. They belong to the Evolver Class.

WARNING : Be sure to understand the difference between skulls needed for 5+ Straw Hats and skulls needed for 6+ legends. They are NOT the same: legend skulls CAN NOT be used to evolve story Straw Hats and vice versa. In other words, each skull is tied to a specific character. In particular, don't confuse skulls for 5+ Sanji/Franky with a skull for 6+ Sanji/Franky. You want to understand that before you make a costly mistake. Two common newbie mistakes is: buying a Red Legend Skull from the Bazaar and trying to use it on G2 (it won't work, but at least you can use the skull later), or feeding skulls to characters through the power up menu (they are evolve materials, using them in the power up screen just wastes them!). Please read this guide and attached FAQ carefully.

Most legends require only one skull to be Super-Evolved, however, Monkey D. Luffy Gear Four: Bounceman needs both a QCK and a PSY skull. And legends that require a unique skull (Judge, Franky, Sanji) require a full set of 5 of their unique skulls.

A Crystal Skull being dropped has a special rainbow-blueish chest as shown in the screenshot below:

  • Q: What can I do with a duplicate skull?
  • A: -If they're Strawhat Skulls, there is little to no use for them. It is always possible that they will be given added functionality in the future -If they're generic Legend Skulls (from ambushes), keep them, since all legends will receive a Super-Evolution in the future even if they don't have it yet, and new legends are released monthly and often require generic skulls. Legend Skulls are color coded, so red skull will work for all legends that are STR when super-evolved (WB, Lucci, Akainu, Crocodile, etc.) when those legends get a 6+ Super Evolution (except the relatively rare legends that require unique skulls like Judge, Sanji, Franky, etc.).
  • Q: What is the drop rate?
  • A: If someone collects better data, this section will be updated (if you have better data, feel free to do it yourself!). For now, the guesstimate for story Straw Hat skull drops is 'similar to the story character' chance, which is unknown but estimated at <10% or (much) less (through some comments suggest this rate has been significantly improved around late 2018). For ambushes, it seems that global drop rate is 10%, and Japan is said to be 20%. Ambush chances at 60 stamina are around 35% through global often gets 100% rates which are rarer on Japan. Source For unique legend skulls, the data is again sparse, but 10-20% drop rate seems like a rule of thumb for highest difficulties.
  • Q: We have a choice of one free Strawhat-skull from a selection. Which should I chose?
  • A: Whichever one works best for you. The general consensus is that of the 5+ straw hats, Luffy and Zoro see the most play (With Luffy being a great F2P captain), Brook, Usopp, Chopper and Sanji are ok, while Nami and Franky are considered the least useful.
  • Q: Is a skull of a single color (ex. DEX ) good for both Straw Hat and Legends?
  • A: No, they are different. Straw Hats skulls drop at 3D2Y story island, are not obtainable from Bazaar, and work only for Straw Hats and not for Legends. And vice versa - Legend Skulls drop from Ambushes, are obtainable from Bazaar, don't work on Straw Hats but work on Legends. In other words, Green Skull for Legend Zoro is not the same as a Green Skull for Story Zoro.
  • Q: My Legend X doesn't have a Super Evolve option. Why?
  • A: SE is generally available for older legends. Just wait, your legend will be super evolvable in few months.
  • Q: Are super evolutions always superior to base forms?
  • A: Generally, yes, but sometimes they are a sidegrade. Ex. G4 and TS Luffy are both very solid and you should ideally have both of them. Read character notes to figure out if it is advisable to SE your character, and whether you should keep the pre-SE version as well.

One Piece Proves Luffy's Gear 5 Is Not Goofy, It's Terrifying

Warning: Contains spoilers for chapter #1108 of One Piece

  • Luffy gets serious in chapter #1108 of One Piece , proving Gear Five is terrifying, not goofy.
  • Luffy shows he can be serious in Gear Five, putting to rest concerns about silliness.
  • Luffy's reaction in chapter #1108 while in Gear Five proves his capability to be intimidating when his friends are hurt.

As the stakes continue to rise on Egghead, Luffy has finally gotten serious about taking down Kizaru and Saturn, a decisive moment in One Piece that proves Gear Five isn't goofy but terrifying . Gear Five's goofiness caused quite a divide among fans when it first debuted, causing many to be apprehensive about the future of One Piece 's fights. However, the latest chapter puts these concerns to rest as Luffy finally gets down to business, and intimidatingly so.

In chapter #1108 of One Piece, Luffy finally takes charge of the battle against Saint Saturn and Admiral Kizaru as he grows in size to grab hold of both, and declares he has no intention of letting either of them get away. Although in his Gear Five form, Luffy appears surprisingly angry as he grabs Saturn by his head and crushes Kizaru in his fist.

Although Luffy has spent much of the battle of Egghead in Gear Five, this chapter marks the first instance of him deviating from the usual silliness of Gear Five . The chapter also dispels any concerns that Gear Five's silliness may be taking over Luffy's personality once and for all.

One Piece Gives Luffy A New Awesome Power (& It's His Best One Yet)

One piece proves gear five isn't all fun and games.

At its core, Gear Five is a state in which Luffy is most "free," as he himself describes it in chapter #1061 when asked about his new appearance. While this has translated to Luffy having more fun during his fights, it doesn't necessarily mean he isn't capable of taking his opponents or fights seriously . Admittedly, Luffy has always been carefree, but he has always gotten serious when push comes to shove.

In fact, Luffy's reaction in chapter #1108 is one that fans have seen time and time again whenever his friends get hurt , and while it may be surprising to see in Gear Five, it certainly isn't completely out of character for him. Gear Five's vast potential and reality-bending powers meant it always had the potential to be truly terrifying, and the latest chapter is only a glimpse of how intimidating Luffy can be when he gets serious, especially with his newly awakened devil fruit powers .

Luffy Has One Quality That Makes Him One Piece's Best Captain

Luffy is simply being himself.

Though others may recognize Luffy as the reincarnation of Nika or the Warrior of Liberation, Luffy himself is blissfully unaware of the truth about his devil fruit or the significance of Gear Five. This is made especially clear in chapter #1107 when Bonney claims Luffy is Nika, to which Luffy simply asks, "What's Nika?", proving his obliviousness.

Clearly, Luffy is still very much in control , disproving the common misconception that the Nika Fruit's silliness is taking over his personality. Luffy is simply being himself, and he has been all along, helping those who asked for it (in this case, Vegapunk and Bonney), and having a little fun along the way.

That said, Luffy has finally kicked the battle on Egghead into high gear, and fans will likely see Gear Five's terrifying abilities in full swing once again in the upcoming chapters of One Piece . Kizaru and Saturn will not be easy opponents, so perhaps Luffy may have to take the battle seriously to the end.

Created by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is a multimedia franchise that began as a manga series and follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as led by Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy, an enthusiastic pirate with a thirst for adventure, is afflicted by a mysterious curse that gives him various powers he uses to protect himself and his friends. The manga eventually gave way to the anime series, with the two being some of history's longest-running anime and manga series. Along with over fifty video games made over the years, the series entered the live-action world with Netflix's 2023 adaptation.

Luffy’s Gear 5 in One Piece Changes Everything

Sun God Nika- The Warrior of Liberation

Luffy has always been a character who brings joy and liberation- it only makes sense that he’s the legendary Joyboy and the Warrior of Liberation from the days of the Void Century. The Gomu Gomu no Mi Devil Fruit has never existed and it was only used as a cover for the true name of Luffy’s Devil Fruit, Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika – a mythical Zoan Devil Fruit.

We learned of the 4 Gods of One Piece in Skypiea and among them was the Sun God whom we only learned in Wano was called Sun God Nika. According to legend, he was a Warrior of Liberation whose body had the properties of rubber and he freed the slaves all while laughing, dancing, and being goofy. Oda took a long time to solidify Luffy’s character and his role in the world and story of One Piece.

That’s why when Luffy’s Gear 5 in One Piece came out in Wano, it was at once shocking but also earned. Let’s take a look at its powers and abilities.

Powers & Abilities of Luffy’s Gear 5 in One Piece Explained

Gear 5 Luffy fighting Lucci in Egghead

Luffy’s Gear 5 in One Piece has a signature heartbeat pattern resembling that of Drums and is often called the Drums of Liberation. It makes his body more rubbery and grants him to fight with full freedom. In short, it’s toon force- invoking the iconic rubber hose style animation of classic cartoons, this form allows Luffy to fight with as much freedom as his imagination can handle.

He can obviously turn his surroundings into rubber but he can also grab lightning, clouds, or even his opponents as if they too were made of rubber. He can affect natural phenomena, manifest sunglasses and baseball bats from a hammerspace, and so on. His abilities are only limited by his imagination and we know Luffy has boundless potential there. Being a Zoan Fruit also means it has a will of its own and grants Luffy increased strength, stretchiness, stamina, and durability.

The only downside to Luffy’s Gear 5 in One Piece is that it consumes a lot of stamina and even likely his life force- which is why after using it for 5-10 minutes, he reverts into the form of an old man. His appearance goes from white hair and attire to a washed-out shriveled-up greyish grandpa.

Why Luffy’s Gear 5 in One Piece Challenges Established Tropes in Battle Shonen Mangas

The rubber hose style of Luffy's Gear 5

A transformation like this in a battle shonen is unprecedented as most mangas go for a serious or gritty tone the more their protagonist progresses and gets powerful in their story. Goku’s Saiyan transformations are the precedent and have become the blueprint for battle shonen anime transformations. You can then look at Naruto’s Sage of 6 Paths or Ichigo’s Final Getsuga Tenshou forms as the next heavy hitters. Everyone thought that after Gear 4, Luffy would go in the same direction.

But Oda, being the eccentric genius he is, still wanted to keep the story fun considering the manga is entering the Final Saga and it’s already darker than the majority of the story before. Luffy’s Gear 5 in One Piece also pays homage to the classic Western cartoons that inspired the manga industry in the first place- cartoons like Tom & Jerry, Mickey Mouse, and Looney Tunes were some of the specific titles that heavily inspired Oda.

One Piece: What Is Luffy’s Best Transformation?

Of all the new forms that Luffy has taken on in critical fights throughout the series, which one among them eclipsed the rest?

  • Gear 2: Enhanced speed and offense for Luffy to outmatch opponents like CP9's Blueno.
  • Gear 3: Giant-like strength to crush targets, at the expense of speed and mobility.
  • Gear 5: Luffy's ultimate form, rewriting reality with mythical power and imagination, a game-changer against Kaido.

From his early years in the East Blue to his current adventures as an Emperor of the Sea in the New World, Monkey D. Luffy has made leaps and bounds in his journey to become the next Pirate King in Eiichiro Oda's One Piece . In accordance with the stronger enemies he has encountered in his travels as Captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy has developed several transformations to boost his combat ability, reaching new heights of power in the process.

Beginning with Gear 2's enhanced speed, to Gear 3's localized gigantification, Gear 4's combination of Haki and earlier forms, as well as the Mythical Zoan Awakening abilities of Gear 5, each one of Luffy's forms has afforded him a varied range of benefits. Over countless battles against some of the strongest pirates and Marines in the Grand Line, Luffy has honed each of these transformations and improved them, to better protect his allies. With this in mind, excluding purely situational forms, what is Luffy's best transformation in One Piece ?

One Piece: When Will The Egghead Arc End?

Gear 2 was a major step up, high speed movement and deadly offensive power combine.

First seen during his fight against the CP9 agent Blueno in Enies Lobby , Gear 2 was Luffy's method to deal with CP9's Soru high-speed movement technique and Tekkai's defensive ability. By expanding his blood vessels to increase his blood pressure, Luffy could surpass the natural limits of his body by circulating oxygen and other nutrients through it at a much faster rate. In effect, this allowed him to move at heightened speeds and deal more damage with his attacks.

When using Gear 2, Luffy's body turns light pink and emits steam to reflect his accelerated blood flow and higher internal temperature. At first, each usage of Gear 2 sapped away his energy quite quickly, but this seems to have reduced considerably after the time skip. Luffy's use of Gear 2 has now reached a point where the speed and power behind his attacks can cause his fists to ignite, creating an attack he now calls the Gomu Gomu no Red Hawk, which delivers fiery blows with the enhanced impact of Gear 2. In Onigashima, even Kaido was forced to dodge this attack, highlighting how much Luffy has honed its destructive power.

In terms of design, there is not much of a change in Luffy's desig n, but the debut of this ability is still among the best moments from the Enies Lobby arc, as it was the first instance where Luffy had to develop his Devil Fruit powers to take on opponents who outclassed him. When used against Blueno, Luffy was able to overwhelm the CP9 agent completely, after being on the back foot in earlier parts of the fight.

Gear 3 Grants Luffy The Power Of A Giant

Sacrifices speed for the strength to crush battleships.

Just like its predecessor, Gear 3 also made its debut in Enies Lobby . In this form, Luffy is able to inflate his limbs or other parts of his body by blowing air into his bones, expanding them to a massive size. Luffy's raw strength allows him to deliver incredibly destructive punches with this form, wielding strength on par with a giant. The caveat here is that Gear 3 sacrifices speed and mobility for pure strength, as Luffy has a hard time moving around while using this form.

One Piece: Strongest Giants, Ranked

Prior to the time skip, each use of Gear 3 temporarily reduced Luffy's size to a chibi-esque state, but he overcame this while training on Rusakaina Island. Eventually, Luffy was able to combine both Gear 2 and Gear 3 while augmenting them with Armament Haki to create giant fiery fists which even dealt damage to Kaido, who was the world's strongest creature. In the middle of the Raid on Onigashima, Luffy learned how to infuse Conqueror's Haki into his Gear 3 attacks, bolstering their offensive power by a considerable degree.

Once again, the design of this form is not too different apart from the comically enlarged limbs Luffy gains. That being said, its offensive power, when combined with advanced Armament and Conqueror's Haki is nothing short of terrifying , as it was able to clash evenly with Kaido on the rooftop of Onigashima. Luffy can now freely inflate parts of his body without having to blow air into them, and he often uses Gear 3 attacks in fights against strong opponents who have an advantage over him in terms of stature.

Gear 4 Combines Haki With Earlier Forms

Affords flexibility in his offensive and defensive capabilities through its versions.

The first new form Luffy revealed after the time skip, Gear 4 was developed during his training on Rusakaina Island, to deal with the larger beasts he had to tame. In essence, this transformation sees Luffy blow air into his muscles to expand them, after which he makes considerable use of Armament Haki to harden large portions of his body. So far, there are three known variations of Gear 4: Boundman, Snakeman, and Tankman. Each has its benefits, but they all have the drawback of preventing Luffy from using Haki for 10 minutes once the transformation wears off.

Boundman turns Luffy's body into a form akin to a rubber ball, such that he is constantly bouncing at all times. That being said, the offensive boost he gains is immense, to the point where he can send opponents such as Doflamingo flying with a single punch. In addition, this form also allows him to fly in a manner similar to the Geppo technique used by Cipher Pol and the Marines. Gear 4's focus on compression also grants Luffy the ability to withdraw his limbs into his body, and he can even redirect punches multiple times to confuse opponents.

Tankman is a consequence of Luffy overeating, and it bolsters his defenses at the cost of mobility and offensive power. Lastly, Snakeman is a more balanced version which has slightly less attack power than Boundman, but affords far more mobility and greater flexibility when it comes to redirecting attacks. Whereas Boundman's design is intimidating yet almost comical, Snakeman is quite unique in how it takes Luffy's rubber powers to an entirely new level of unpredictability. Both debuted during iconic fights against Donquixote Doflamingo and Charlotte Katakuri, so they hold immense narrative significance in One Piece as well.

Gear 5 Is Luffy's Peak

Limited only by the power of his imagination.

As far as transformations in battle shonen anime and manga go, Gear 5 is exceptionally unique in how it grants its user to rewrite reality itself as they see fit. Its creation highlights Eiichiro Oda's knack for defying norms and not taking his characters' power ups too seriously. There is no shortage of entertainment whenever this form appears, given how its power provides Luffy with the ability to transcend the laws of physics and turn his imagination into reality in the blink of an eye.

One Piece: Why Eiichiro Oda’s Hiatus Is Good For The Final Saga

Since it is the awakened form of Luffy's Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika (otherwise known as the Gomu Gomu no Mi), the transformation has all the traits of a Mythical Zoan Awakening such as a shroud of clouds. The pure white appearance of this form also imbues a divine, otherworldly touch to Luffy's appearance. In terms of strength, Luffy is able to affect his environment and even his opponents with this Devil Fruit form, in a manner similar to the Awakening of Paramecia-type Devil Fruits. Combined with his Armament and Conqueror's Haki, Gear 5 is truly a force to be reckoned with.

When it debuted on the rooftop of Onigashima in Luffy's battle against Kaido, Gear 5 was a game changer that clinched the fight in his favor. Described as Luffy's "peak," Gear 5 has all the benefits of earlier forms, and permits him to switch seamlessly between them, as seen in how he can enlarge himself to the size of a giant, or gain more muscle in a way that resembles Gear 4. His fighting style is also far more cartoonish in this state, and he is always laughing maniacally. Luffy's speed, strength, elasticity, and recovery in this state border on the absurd, and the only drawback to this form is how exhausted he becomes whenever his stamina runs out.

What Is Luffy's Best Transformation In The Series?

Each of Luffy's forms has been pivotal to his journey so far, even if they did not fit the mold of a conventional transformation in terms of appearance, like in the cases of Gear 2 and Gear 3. When both these forms premiered, they were extremely memorable moments in the series as a whole, and Luffy has continued to call on their abilities in some of his most important recent fights . However, they might not hold as much as transformations when compared to Gear 4 or Gear 5.

Gear 4 has served Luffy well after the time skip, allowing him to defeat both Doflamingo and Katakuri in critical battles during the Straw Hats' journey through the New World. The designs of Snakeman and Boundman were also quite imaginative and a departure from Luffy's generally jovial demeanor. In spite of this, there can be little argument that Gear 5 is a brilliant subversion of the shonen transformation that does justice to what a power up is meant to be in its own distinct way. Moreover, it also gives series creator Eiichiro Oda a significant degree of creative freedom in writing Luffy's battles in One Piece , which is why it is arguably Luffy's best transformation in the series so far.
