TourCast lets online viewers track their favorite PGA Tour players with high-res 3D graphics

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/06/TOURCast_ProductShowcase_hires.jpg

The PGA Tour’s technology team is on a mission to decrease productivity at businesses throughout America.

OK, not really. But that could be an unintended consequence of the full release of TourCast on PGATour.com and the PGA Tour's mobile apps. Golf fans will certainly struggle to get any work done when tour events are underway.

Starting this week at the Charles Schwab Challenge and for the rest of this COVID-shortened season, fans will have the opportunity to follow PGA Tour action online in greater detail than ever before thanks to the new platform. TourCast is like ShotLink on 3D steroids. The technology debuted at the Players Championship (for one round at least) but took a back seat to the emerging coronavirus pandemic. With the tour returning at Colonial Country Club, officials are excited for TourCast to see its first full week of PGA Tour action.

Specifically, TourCast lets viewers follow players ’ progress around a golf course, a la ShotLink, graphically tracing the results of each shot. But TourCast takes ShotLink a step further by depicting the course through interactive 3D renderings produced via overlaying sketches generated from high-resolution imagery captured by aircraft. Fans can follow a player’s progress in detail like never before, creating a truly enhanced tracking experience.

RELATED: Every shot live is coming to the PGA Tour

Before a golfer hits a shot, viewers can see his career history on the hole he’s playing, his up-to-the-minute strokes-gained data for the tournament and the season, his position on the leader board, how tough the hole is playing on the day, yardages to the pin, front and back of the green, and the views from wherever the player is standing.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2020/06/TOURCast_Rahm_17.jpg

Once the shot is hit, fans will have significantly more data than previously at their disposal. Swing speed, ball speed, spin rate, apex height and more will be provided by ShotLink’s underlying radar technology. The tour is working on having the “ball-in-motion” flight path of every shot viewable in the near future. When completed, if a player hits a rope hook, you’ll be able to see just how much the ball moved from right to left.

Anxious fantasy players/gamblers will be happy to learn that the TourCast technology, unlike ShotLink, shows the entirety of the course. On ShotLink, when a player hits a ball outside the boundary of a specific hole, it is listed in the play-by-play as “unknown.” That will not be the case with TourCast—fans will be able to see exactly where a player’s ball is, no matter if it’s two fairways over, as well as the view the player has from where his ball ended up.

Perhaps the most exciting new feature is an AI-driven video highlight cutting and posting program, facilitated by WSC sports, which will result in every shot captured by a PGA Tour camera being immediately posted to TourCast. If a player is in a featured group, that means virtually every one of his shots will be viewable through TourCast in real time.

RELATED: At Colonial, golf returns with barely a whisper

It’s a feature similar to the one that debuted at the Masters in 2019, where fans could watch video of almost every shot at Augusta, by every player, on Masters.com. That, of course, requires cameras on every hole, following every group. The tour did have that in place for the first time at TPC Sawgrass for the Players. There are no concrete plans to bring enough cameras to replicate that experience at other Tour courses … yet.

“Our goal is to have a product probably in three-to-five years,” said Brendan Morley, PGA Tour senior technical digital product manager, “where we can show every single shot, from every single player, at every single event.”

For a more concrete preview of the experience, the Tour retro-fitted Rickie Fowler’s final round from the 2015 Players Championship to the TourCast platform. The curious can link to that here , and relived Fowler ’ s winning performance at TPC Sawgrass.

But be warned: If you give the platform a look on company time, don ’ t expect to get much work done the rest of the day.

Pga tour exploratory data analysis and machine learning predictive model.

Author: Kevin Li ( [email protected] )

As a former competitive golfer, I have always enjoyed watching the PGA Tour. Whether it is the Masters, British Open, or the RBC Canadian Open, the thrills of the final round competition provide inexplicable and oftentimes heart-wrenching excitement.

As a start and stop sport, the game of golf offers numerous statistics — driving distance, number of putts, green in regulation percentage, etc… — that build together to describe a player’s performance. In recent years, the PGA Tour, in partnership with ShotLink, has made this data available to the general audience. Using this data, I decided to explore the relationship between various data points and whether they could serve as an accurate predictor of a player’s FedexCup Earnings.

Importing and Cleaning Data

First, we import the dataset made available by Kaggle, and we select the various data points that we think could predict earnings.

We notice that two columns — Official Money and Putting Birdie Distance — contain either NaN values or need to be cleaned to reflect an integer value.

pga tour statcast

Analyzing and Cleaning Data

First, it is important to look at the distribution of each statistic and correlation plots to get a general impression of the trend.

pga tour statcast

From the figures above, it is not surprising that the Approach Distance, Scoring averages, and Average Putts are normally distributed. It is quite interesting to note that the Official Money plot is largely right-skewed, showing the rarity it is for a player to earn above one million in tournament earnings.

Another interesting trend to note is the relationship between Club Head Speed and Driving Distance. On a theoretical level, the two distributions should be identical with little discrepancy. However, we see that there is a visible difference between the two distributions, most likely due to the fact that shorter-hitters (with lower club-head speed) are more efficient with their ball speed conversions.

pga tour statcast

From the correlation plots, we notice the following patterns:

  • Par four and Par five Scoring Averages have a much greater correlation than Par three Scoring Average. This means that on a relative basis, Par five performance is the most important.
  • Of the four main areas of the game — Driving, Scrambling, Approach Shot, and Putting — we see that Iron Play and Putting are still the most important factors. Despite the rise in long-distance hitters over the past few years, we see that the importance of shorter clubs still dominates.
  • Green In Regulation percentage, as expected, has the greatest correlation with Par four Performance.
  • Scrambling performance also has a greater correlation with Par 4 Performance.
  • We see that Putting is much more important on Par three and Par fours than Par fives. This is most likely because Par five performance relies much more on the first two to three shots (longer clubs).

Let us now more closely examine the relational plots.

pga tour statcast

From the first plot, we see that Approach Distance as GIR Percent has little relationship. One would assume that having a shorter distance into the green would increase one’s chances of finding the green.

However, from the second plot, we do see a very positive correlation between Driving Distance and Par 5 Performance — and correspondingly, Official Money.

Machine Learning Portion

Preparation: Grouping the FedexCup Earnings into 8 bins, based on percentile.

pga tour statcast

We then use Python functions for the Logistic Regression, Random Forest Classifier, and the Support Vector Machine.

pga tour statcast

We see the result as follows:

pga tour statcast

We see that with this, the Random Forest Model and the Support Vector Machine Models could classify players’ annual FedexCup Earnings with moderate accuracy.

PGA Tour: Scottie Scheffler's record-breaking under par streak ends at Houston Open

Scottie Scheffler's record-breaking streak of 28 consecutive rounds under par on the PGA Tour came to an end at the Houston Open.

The world number one missed a simple putt on the 18th hole at Memorial Park to end his second round on a double bogey and card a level-par 70.

The American, who is four behind leader Tony Finau, was asked by reporters if his miss was down to a "mental lapse".

"No, I do that all the time," said Scheffler.

"You watch me a lot, that happens a lot to me. You never really know what's going to be up there around the cup on 18. I felt like I hit a good putt on the first one, but the second one I guess just hit a little fast and didn't see a spike mark there."

Join BBC Sport's WhatsApp channels

While Scheffler's streak is over, his hopes of matching Tiger Woods' record of 52 consecutive rounds at par or better remain alive.

Finau, who carded a course-record 62 on Friday, has a two-shot lead over Alejandro Tosti in Texas.

Scheffler, 27, is hoping to win his third PGA title in a row.

HOUSTON (AP) — Stephan Jaeger couldn’t have dreamed up a better scenario for his first PGA Tour victory. He played the final 36 holes with the best player in the world, and he won the Houston Open on Sunday to earn his first trip to the Masters.

“It feels amazing,” Jaeger said.

Scottie Scheffler couldn’t imagine a tougher way for his March winning streak to end — a clutch shot to 5 feet on the final hole, and a birdie putt he thought was good until he looked up and realized it wasn’t.

“I hit two or three really good shots into 18 to give myself a chance and I feel like I made the putt and I looked up and it was breaking off,” Scheffler said. “So a bit disappointing, but Stephan played great this week and he’s a deserving champion.”

Jaeger closed with nine straight pars, and that was just enough for a 3-under 67 to finally win in his 135th attempt on the PGA Tour.

Jaeger was preparing for a playoff after narrowly missing a 20-foot birdie putt that would have assured the victory. But then Scheffler, who gave himself three good looks down the stretch, saw his putt burn the left edge of the cup.

“I expected him to make it, and I’m not mad at him for missing it,” Jaeger said.

Scheffler was trying to become the first player in seven years to win three straight starts on the PGA Tour, and he was right there with a chance. Two shots behind, he had a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-5 16th and settled for birdie. He missed from 12 feet for birdie on the 17th, and stayed alive when Jaeger missed from 7 feet on the reachable par-4 17th.

His last chance was from 5 feet.

“It would be one thing if I pulled it or something like that,” Scheffler said. “I just misread it. I don’t know why I misread it, it’s part of the game. Maybe I could have hit it with some more speed, I felt like I hit a nice putt kind of how I wanted to, just didn’t go.”

Jaeger, a 34-year-old German who came to high school in Tennessee when he was 16, earned his first trip to the Masters with the victory. He also is in the remaining four $20 million signature events this season.

Alejandro Tosti had a chance to become the fourth PGA Tour rookie to win this early in the year. He was tied for the lead until chipping too strong on the 18th and missing the 18-foot par putt for a 68.

There was a five-way tie for the lead at the start — the largest on tour since 2009 — and eight players had at least a share of the lead at some point during the round.

Jaeger was always in the mix, taking the lead with an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-3 ninth hole at Memorial Park. That was his last birdie of the day, and no one could beat him.

“I was just tried to stay within myself,” Jaeger said. “Birdies eluded me on the back nine. But this golf course plays difficult, especially when you’re around the lead. I’m just super happy.”

Thomas Detry, David Skinns and Taylor Moore all made mistakes down the stretch.

Scheffler was one shot behind when he missed the green on the par-3 15th and failed to save par on an 8-foot putt, falling two shots behind with three to play. He got one back with his birdie on the downwind 16th, where Jaeger had to lay up and settle for par.

Scheffler and Jaeger both missed good birdie chances on the 17th, and Scheffler had one last chance on the 18th.

Jaeger finished at 12-under 268 and cracks the top 50 in the world ranking for the first time.

“I couldn’t have dreamed up a better week,” Jaeger said. “Playing Scottie last couple days, he’s been on a tear, so to kind of slay the dragon a little bit this week was amazing. He’s such a good dude, such a good player, I was just happy to play with him a couple days.”

Defending champion Tony Finau closed with two straight birdies for a 66 and joined Scheffler, Tosti, Detry and Moore in a tie for second.

This was the final week for players to move into the top 50 and earn a Masters invitation, and no one from outside the top 50 — Mackenzie Hughes and Tom Hoge had the best chances — did well enough to earn a spot.

Byeong Hun An is the only player from the top 50 added to the field for the Masters, which now includes Jaeger.

Rory mcilroy doesn’t see pga tour-liv golf divide as sustainable: ‘need to be a correction’.

  • View Author Archive

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Rory Mcllroy expressed concern for the health of the game of golf as the split between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf continued.

In an interview with Golf Week, Mcllroy viewed the situation as unsustainable and described things as not benefiting anyone while explaining how unfortunate it is that the best golfers play on separate tours for a good portion of the year.

“There needs to be a correction. I think what’s happening is not sustainable right now, so something needs to happen to try to bring it all back together so we can all move forward so we don’t have this division that’s sort of ongoing,” McIlroy told the outlet, per Reuters . “They keep going down those different paths and I just don’t see how that benefits anyone in the long run. … I think [it’s] a shame for the overall game of golf.”

Rory Mcllroy doesn't think golf can keep going the way it is with the deep divide between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour.

Merger talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have been ongoing, but there have been little in any substantive updates from either side regarding those plans.

The PGA Tour did secure a $3 billion investment deal with Strategic Sports Group (SSG), a consortium of U.S sports team owners, which includes Mets owner Steve Cohen, in January.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan told reporters last month that the PGA Tour would be willing to move forward with just SSG if the LIV deal isn’t able to be figured out.

And any hope of getting something secured between the two sides still seems far off to Mcllroy.

”We’re probably still quite a long ways from it, but I would hope that in the future that we can get there, unify the game and get the best players back together again,” he said.

Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley didn’t sound too optimistic about a merger deal getting done quickly either, he said during an interview on RTE Radio 1.

LIV Golf CEO and Commissioner Greg Norman

“Don’t hold your breath,” he said during the interview, according to The Daily Mirror . “I think both parties are still wide away from each other in terms of where the common ground is.”

2024 Texas Open odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by golf model that's called 10 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the valero texas open 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

ludvig-aberg-pga-golf-usatsi.jpg

Four of the world's top-10 golfers will head to TPC San Antonio for the 2024 Valero Texas Open, which begins on Thursday at 8:20 a.m. ET. It is the final week before the first major tournament of the season, and this week's winner will earn the final invitation to the Masters, if not already qualified. Rory McIlroy is making his third start at this course after finishing as the runner-up in 2013 and missing the cut in 2022. He has six worldwide wins since his last start at this tournament, and he is the 15-2 favorite in the 2024 Texas Open odds.

McIlroy will have to beat a Texas Open 2024 field that includes Ludvig Aberg (12-1), Hideki Matsuyama (18-1) and Max Homa (18-1). Should you back any of them with your Texas Open bets? Before locking in your 2024 Texas Open picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2024 Valero Texas Open field is set, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Valero Texas Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Texas Open 2024: Aberg, a rising star and one of the top favorites, struggles this week and doesn't even crack the top five. Aberg has exploded on the scene, recording one win and two runner-up finishes in 23 PGA Tour events. He's secured a top-10 finish in three of his last five starts, which includes an eighth-place showing at The Players Championship in March.

However, Aberg has struggled with accuracy off the tee this season. The 24-year-old enters this week's event ranked 98th in driving accuracy (57.59%). TPC San Antonio puts a premium on positioning off the tee, which doesn't bode well for Aberg's chances to finish on top of the leaderboard.

Another surprise: Tommy Fleetwood, a 30-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Fleetwood is the sixth-highest ranked golfer in this week's field, sitting just outside the top 10 in the world rankings.

The 33-year-old went winless last season, but he made the cut in 18 of 21 events and cracked the top 10 on nine occasions. He is off to a solid start in 2024, finishing T10 at the Genesis Invitational and making the cut in four of his first five tournaments. The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio puts an emphasis on accuracy, and Fleetwood ranks 25th on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy, making him a quality longshot betting option this week.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Valero Texas Open picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Valero Texas Open, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Valero Texas Open 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Valero Texas Open leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 10 golf majors, including last year's Masters and Open Championship.
