SINGAPORE (AP) — Prince William arrived Sunday in Singapore for the Earthshot Prize awards, the first to be held in Asia, to support environmental innovators with solutions to battle climate change and save the planet.

Dozens of people waving British flags welcomed him with loud cheers. William , 41, shook hands, signed autographs and sportingly took selfies with many of them during a walkabout.

“It’s fantastic to be back in Singapore for this year’s Earthshot Prize ceremony, after eleven years,” he said in a statement upon landing. “Singapore’s bold vision to be a leader for environmental innovation sets the standard for others to follow.”

“He has this charm,” said Johanes Mario, a Singaporean welcoming William at the airport. “He really fights for ... the climate. I believe this is really a good cause for the future of our generation,” he added.

At Singapore’s Changi Airport and before greeting the crowd, William stood on an upper floor for a stunning view of the 40-meter high Rain Vortex, the world’s largest indoor waterfall that was illuminated green to mark his arrival. He was also shown a tree planted in his honor in the indoor garden at the foot of the waterfall.

The heir to the British throne last visited Singapore with his wife Princess Catherine in 2012. Traveling solo this time, William’s focus is on the Earthshot Prize that he and his Royal Foundation charity launched in 2020 to promote innovative solutions and technologies to combat global warming and mitigate its impact on the environment.

Five winners will be named at an award ceremony on Tuesday. Each will get a million pounds ($1.2 million) to help them scale up their projects for wider global reach. Fifteen finalists representing six continents were selected from 1,300 nominees this year. The winners are from five categories: nature protection, clean air, ocean revival, waste elimination and climate change.

William will address the star-studded ceremony, to be hosted by English actor Hannah Waddingham. Wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin and celebrities including Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett and actors Lana Condor and Nomzamo Mbatha, are expected to attend the event.

The inaugural ceremony was held in London in 2021, followed by Boston last year. The prize’s name refers to the late President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 “moonshot” speech, which challenged Americans to reach the moon by the end of that decade. That inspired the prince and his partners to set a similar goal for finding solutions to pressing environmental problems by 2030.

Singapore’s Foreign Ministry said William will call on Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and meet Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loon at The Istana palace — one of Singapore’s oldest heritage sites — during his four-day trip.

William, a keen sportsman, will also try his hand at dragon boating, a popular sport in Singapore and many parts of the world. He will also meet Singaporeans to see how local organizations are working to protect and restore the planet.

William’s office at Kensington Palace has said that Singapore was chosen to host this year’s awards ceremony because of its role as a “hub for innovation” in Southeast Asia.

William will also attend the United for Wildlife summit, featuring representatives of law enforcement agencies, conservation groups and corporations working to combat trade in illegal wildlife products, estimated at $20 billion annually.

This version of the story has corrected the spelling of Robert Irwin’s name.

Prince William arrives in Singapore for Earthshot ceremony

The Prince of Wales received a warm welcome in Singapore amid the backdrop of the world’s largest indoor waterfall ahead of the Earthshot Prize ceremony.

Prince William has arrived in Singapore, where he'll announce the winners of his Earthshot Prize, a £1m award for green innovators.

The Prince of Wales said it was "fantastic to be back" as crowds gathered around the world's largest indoor waterfall at Changi Airport.

Travelling without the Princess of Wales, who stayed at home to help Prince George with school exams, Prince William's welcome started at Jewel, a tropical garden dome set inside the terminal building.

He then met some of those who'd waited to see him, including an eight-month-old baby who decided to suck on his finger.

Earthshot, named after President Kennedy's famous Moonshot prize, offers five £1m awards to companies working on solutions to the climate crisis.

Two of this year's 15 finalists are from the UK - Norwich-based Colorfix, a business making natural fabric dyes, and Enzo, a London tyre firm that supplies electric cars.

A number of big names are lined up to take part in this year's ceremony, which will be hosted by Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham and Black Panther actor Sterling K Brown.

Prince William said: "Let us all take inspiration from the fantastic work being done here as we celebrate this year's Earthshot Prize finalists."

Singapore is considered the greenest city in Asia and several iconic local landmarks will light up in green to mark the ceremony.

Prince William begins four-day visit to Singapore

Some have questioned the climate credentials of flying finalists all the way to Singapore, but Kensington Palace argues this is balanced by the benefits of highlighting the green innovations showcased in the awards.

These awards are now in their third year and are said to be a deeply personal project for Prince William.

Following his father, who as King cannot be as outspoken, the Prince of Wales has taken on the mantle of campaigning about the climate crisis and the need for sustainable solutions.

At the late Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee last year, it was Prince William who took to the stage outside Buckingham Palace and made a speech highlighting the environmental issues.

Coming just days after the King's state visit to Kenya, these trips are an opportunity for a bit of royal PR on the global stage.

Two events cast a shadow over last year's Earthshot Prize in Boston: the Buckingham Palace race row , and the release of Prince Harry's Netflix trailer .

Kensington Palace will be hoping this three-day trip will pass without distraction or drama.

The Earthshot Prize is heading to Singapore!

The Prince and Princess of Wales will return to Singapore for the 2023 Earthshot Prize.

"The Earthshot Prize is all about showing the world that solutions to some of the biggest environmental challenges we face are out there and need to be scaled," Prince William said in a statement . "After two years of discovering impactful ideas and innovations, I am delighted that The Earthshot Prize is travelling to Singapore where the ground-breaking solutions of our 2023 Finalists will be celebrated."

Prince William and Kate Middleton went to Singapore in 2012, as part of the Diamond Jubilee Tour. While no details of a trip have been announced yet, it is likely that the Princess of Wales will join Prince William for Earthshot 2023, as neither have missed an Earthshot ceremony yet.

The ceremony will honor five winners.

the earthshot prize 2022 green carpet arrivals

The location of Southeast Asia is fitting, as the region is one of the most affected by climate change. Yet, per the Earthshot Prize, "In the face of significant environmental challenges, it is also a hub for innovators, entrepreneurs, community leaders and problem solvers who are committed to restoring our planet. This optimistic approach embodies the spirit of The Earthshot Prize, and, as the gateway to Southeast Asia, Singapore provides the perfect venue for the 2023 Winners to be announced."

During the ceremony, five winners will be awarded £1 million to help scale their environmental solutions. Performances by musicians and artists will also take place during the ceremony.

There will be an "Earthshot Week" for the first time.

And, for the first time, the award ceremony will be part of "Earthshot Week," where "global leaders, businesses and investors convene in Singapore to explore exciting opportunities with The Earthshot Prize Winners and Finalists, aimed at accelerating their solutions and bringing about tangible action to repair the planet." The 2023 Prize will be supported by Temasek Trust , Temasek , GenZero and Conservation International .

The Earthshot Prize is publishing a book for young people.

The Earthshot Prize: A Handbook for Dreamers and Thinkers: Solutions to Repair our Planet

Ahead of this year's prize, Prince William will write the introduction to this "empowering and practical handbook for young changemakers who want to save the planet," published by Hatchette’s Children Group. The book, by Colin Butfield and Jonnie Hughes, will feature contributions from David Attenborough, Shailene Woodley, and Christiana Figueres, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

"The task of repairing our planet isn’t an easy one, and it will most certainly take a generation’s worth of time to achieve," co-authors Butfield and Hughes said in a statement. "But we can motivate this special generation – one with so many young changemakers already out there doing important work and making real change. But we need more, and it is vital that we do everything we can to empower the next generation on their journey. We created this handbook to give young people the tools they need to make real, impactful change to our planet. We hope the book will encourage young dreamers to be stubborn optimists, with resilient, positive attitudes and the conviction that the changes they make will, ultimately, improve the world for everyone."

Earthshot is teaming up with YouTube.

For the 2023 Earthshot Prize, the organization teamed up with YouTube for a two-year partnership. According to YouTube, "The Earthshot Prize will work with YouTube to produce content which inspires users to drive action against climate change with stories of urgent optimism from around the world." The platform will also promote Earthshot's YouTube channel and help build an engaged community. It ties into the Prince and Princess of Wales's recent focus on the platform .

"Our vision is to make YouTube the world’s leading destination for awareness, education, and action on the global climate crisis and partnering with The Earthshot Prize allows us to raise the voices of authoritative experts on this important issue. It also provides an opportunity to spotlight and celebrate the innovative solutions presented by the finalists for this year’s award," Pedro Pina, Head of YouTube Europe, Middle East & Africa said in a statement.

The Prince of Wales will travel to Singapore on November 5 for a four-day trip to take part in Earthshot Week, events bringing together businesses and investors with past winners and current finalists to advance their solutions.

Prince William will also attend the third annual Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony , which is taking place on November 7.

The Prince of Wales, along with celebrity supporters of Earthshot, is expected to fly to Singapore by a commercial flight , and organisers say other measures will be in place to make the event as sustainable as possible.

During his trip, Prince William will spend time meeting Singaporeans and learning about how local organisations are working to protect and restore our planet, from tackling the illegal wildlife trade and protecting rainforest to nurturing and scaling up innovations.

He will also attend the United for Wildlife Global Summit 2023 and take part in dragon boat racing.

This year's 15 Earthshot finalists will take part in a “fellowship” retreat that will give them networking opportunities.

Prince William held his first Earthshot Prize awards ceremony at London’s Alexandra Palace in 2021, with Boston hosting the event last year.

It is an ambitious project that each year presents five category winners with £1 million ($1.2 million) each to scale up their environmental ideas.

“The prince is very much looking forward to being in Singapore and that his ambition with the Earthshot Prize and United for Wildlife while we are out there is huge," a Kensington Palace representative said.

“The prince wants to really seize the opportunity of being in South-East Asia to build more momentum around the Earthshot Prize winners and finalists, and to put their solutions to some of the biggest environmental challenges we face firmly on the global map.

“He’s also committed to shining a light on the abhorrent illegal wildlife trade that United for Wildlife works so hard to tackle, and bring in more partners than ever to help us do this.”

Among the 2023 finalists are Enso, a British-based company that has created a more efficient electric vehicle tyre that sheds fewer particles, and Sea Forest from Australia, which has developed a seaweed-based livestock feed to reduce the planet-warming methane emissions from cattle and sheep.

“Singapore is at the heart of climate action movement in South-East Asia and the country exemplifies how to leverage technology, capital and human ingenuity to work collaboratively to solve the toughest of environmental challenges," said Hannah Jones, the Earthshot Prize’s chief executive.

“In the face of worsening climate impacts, Singaporeans are researching solutions to protect coastal cities from rising seas, they’re pursuing novel ways to cool down its citizens on a warming planet and positioning themselves as a global carbon market hub.”

Prince William Will Celebrate the Earthshot Prize in Singapore—And See the World’s Tallest Indoor Waterfall

By Erin Vanderhoof

Prince William Will Celebrate the Earthshot Prize in Singapore—And See the Worlds Tallest Indoor Waterfall

Next month Prince William will travel to Singapore to attend the third annual Earthshot Prize Awards, and his four-day trip will take him to the world’s tallest indoor waterfall and largest glass greenhouse. In addition to events where William will spotlight the prize’s finalists and their innovation projects aimed at solving climate change, he will also host a summit based around the work of United For Wildlife, the conservation organization that he helped found in 2014 .

The Earthshot Prize ceremony will take place on Tuesday, November 7 at the Theatre at Mediacorp , and will be aired on the BBC, PBS, and Mediacorp and streamed on YouTube on Sunday, November 12. For the first time, the award’s finalists will all attend the ceremony, along with a slate of not-yet-announced musical performers and celebrities. The next day, William will also host Earthshot+, a daylong event of speeches and panel discussions about climate, and according to Kensington Palace, board members Jacinda Ardern and Christiana Figueres will both take part in events.

Following last year’s United for Wildlife Summit at London’s Science Museum, the prince will host this year’s gathering at the Flower Dome, the world’s largest greenhouse, located in horticultural attraction Gardens By the Bay. The summit will feature global leaders from conservation, law enforcement, and government to share ideas about combating the illegal wildlife trade around the world. In 2021, United for Wildlife founded a Southeast Asia chapter, and during the event, William will learn more about the organization’s recent efforts to address wildlife crime in the region. The following day, he will also tour the Centre for Wildlife Forensics in the Lim Chu Kang area of the city-state, and the palace notes that he will “learn about the cutting edge approaches taken by researchers to identify and catalogue samples to understand poaching and trafficking trends.”

Though his schedule is packed with events focusing on climate change and conservation, the prince will also have a few opportunities to have some fun. Upon his arrival in the city-state on November 5, William will visit the Jewel Changi Airport, a mall and entertainment pavilion attached to the transportation hub. While there, he will visit the HSCB Rain Vortex, a 130-foot tall fountain that recirculates rain water, which became the world’s tallest indoor waterfall when it opened in 2019 . Then the prince will take part in a walkabout with local residents at the Shiseido Forest Valley, an indoor garden.

The finalists for this year’s award were announced during William’s trip to New York City in September. “I know our generation can take the bold action we need to make changes towards a healthy and sustainable world,” he said in a speech announcing the five finalists in five different categories. “The challenge may feel huge, but as John F. Kennedy taught us, we rise to the challenge not because it is easy, but because it is hard. And vital.”

Britain’s Prince William to visit Singapore for Earthshot Prize

prince william visit to singapore

LONDON – Prince William will travel to Singapore in November for the annual Earthshot Prize, which awards £1 million (S$1.67 million) to five winners developing solutions to environmental problems, Kensington Palace said on Tuesday.

Prince William, the elder son of King Charles III and the heir to the British throne, will be joined by activists, policymakers and innovators at the award ceremony on Nov 7. He is expected to attend a series of events with businesses and investors with the finalists and winners during a four-day trip.

The 15 finalists in 2023 range from a scheme to plant, grow and digitally track trees in Liberia to proposals for a less carbon intensive method to treat industrial wastewater.

“His Royal Highness will spend time meeting Singaporeans and learn about how local organisations are working to protect and restore our planet – from tackling the illegal wildlife trade and protecting the rainforest to incubating and scaling cutting-edge innovations,” Kensington Palace said.

Prince William will also attend the United for Wildlife Global Summit. The Prince and the Royal Foundation launched United for Wildlife in 2014 to tackle the illegal wildlife trade.

In September, Prince William attended the UN General Assembly and met Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss “efforts required to accelerate the fight against climate change and protect the environment”, the United Nations said.

Prince William shares Princess Charlotte's favorite joke at school visit, says Kate 'would have loved' to come

Prince William surprised students at a British high school and gave an update on Kate Middleton .

The Prince of Wales made a surprise appearance at St Michael's Church of England High School Thursday, after he received a letter from one of its students, Freddie Hadley, in October.

"Lots of people write letters, but Freddie's was a really well-written letter. I promised I would come," he told a staff member at the school during his visit, according to the Daily Mail. "I am sorry Catherine can't be here as well. She would have loved to."

His visit to the school comes just one month after Middleton shared in a video revealing she was diagnosed with cancer.

PRINCE WILLIAM RETURNS TO ROYAL DUTY NEARLY 1 MONTH AFTER KATE MIDDLETON'S CANCER DIAGNOSIS ANNOUNCEMENT

The royal couple first learned about Freddie and his classmates when he wrote them a letter inviting them to an event his school was hosting for World Mental Health Day. While he was unable to attend, William shared his apologies on X, formerly Twitter, to Freddie, encouraging him to "please keep up this important work" as "tackling mental health challenges and stigmas head-on is so important."

During his surprise visit, William not only spoke about how mental health challenges have affected him in his personal life. He also gave audiences a look at his softer side when he told a joke.

"I am here with the gang here talking about male mental health, and I've been asked to produce a dad joke. I was trying to channel Jack Whitehall because most of his jokes are pretty dad-like," he said, according to reports. "I think what I'll do is say a joke that is Charlotte's favorite joke at the moment, that she keeps telling me."

He went on to tell a knock-knock joke. When the students asked "who's there," William responded with "interrupting cow," and before the students could finish asking "interrupting cow who?" William interrupted, saying, "Moo!"

After getting a few laughs from the crowd, William explained that "was the greatest one" that he was able to think of that was both "clean and broadcastable."

"It's good. It's good," Freddie assured him.

In an effort to surprise Freddie, school officials told him he would be meeting with the Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands. Instead, it was Prince William who stepped out of the motorcade, with Freddie telling People magazine seeing him was a "massive shock."

"So, this is the young lad who started it all off. Very nice to see you. Thank you for your letter," William said.

"You're very welcome," Freddie responded.

In his letter, Freddie called himself a representative of the Matrix Project, which aims to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health, specifically in men. The focus is early intervention, focusing energy on boys, ages 11 to 14, who come together to brainstorm how to best work through mental health challenges.

"He is a very nice guy," Freddie told People. "When I sat down with him about what we do in school with our Matrix Project, I got more comfortable, and I felt like I got into his way of thinking about it. He asked us about why we do our stuff and why he is an advocate for male mental health.

"[William] said from working with charities for mental health he realizes — as he’s a male himself — he’s gone through those things before," he added. "He realizes it is such a massive thing in today’s society, and he wanted to step up and get these issues sorted out."

Prince William Plans Return to Duties as a ‘WFH’ Royal

William will combine digital appearances and in-person engagements to maximize “impact” in what sources tell The Daily Beast are “a template” and a “dry run” for his future reign.

Prince William is planning a return to full-time royal duties beginning next week, combining work-from-home digital appearances and in-person engagements to maximize “impact” in what sources said would be “a template” and a “dry run” for his future reign.

William, who had not been seen or heard from in over three weeks since before his wife Kate Middleton announced she had been diagnosed with cancer, returned to public visibility Wednesday with a social media post paying tribute to a leading female soccer player retiring from England’s national team.

It was a carefully calibrated dip of the toe back into public life, and ongoing digital engagement of this kind is understood to be a key plank of his strategy for combining the unexpected intensification of his royal role occasioned by his father’s illness with being a “family man,” bringing a kind of “WFH” approach to the business of royalty as one friend put it.

William has spent the past three weeks of school holidays at his country home on the Sandringham Estate with his family, time which will also have helped him prepare himself for what another source termed “a dry run at being king much sooner than he might have imagined”—referring to the fact that his father, King Charles III , has been forced to step back from public-facing royal duties due to his own cancer treatment, leaving William as the highest-profile member of the family still actively working.

He is thought to have appreciated his time out of the spotlight and was reportedly spotted earlier this week enjoying a pint in a local pub with his mother-in-law, Carole Middleton, confirming rumors that Kate’s family are rallying around to help the princess as she recovers from cancer.

Kate Middleton announces that she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy after cancer was found to have been present, following her abdominal surgery in January.

Charles is thought to have spent several days in Scotland for his wedding anniversary, and although he has also been largely off the radar with the exception of an Easter Day appearance, it is not thought father and son met over the Easter holidays. Charles has left little doubt over his admiration for Kate, however, with aides briefing The Daily Beast that he is “proud” of the way she decided to address her illness publicly.

While Kensington Palace declined to comment on what exactly William’s plans for the next few weeks are, and did not respond to questions about whether William would be doing more work online, his office previously briefed journalists that he could expect to be seen back in public again once the school term recommenced on Wednesday next week. The Daily Beast understands that this is still the plan and he will be making a series of in-person public appearances over the coming weeks.

A friend of the couple told The Daily Beast: “In many ways the next few weeks and months will be a template for his future reign because he will have similar personnel available after he succeeds to the throne, even if that doesn’t happen for many years. I think you’ll see him try and balance the demands of state with the demands of being a good family man, taking care of his sick wife and making sure his kids are doing OK. I’m sure that will mean doing more stuff online. He can ‘WFH’ and do hybrid working a bit. Frankly, it has more impact because it reaches many more people.”

Another source, a former royal courtier, told The Daily Beast: “William and Kate had hoped to have several decades as Prince and Princess of Wales, and, God willing, they will still get them. But what is interesting about the next few months is that William is being forced into a dry run at being king much sooner than he might have imagined such a thing would come to pass. Of course he doesn’t welcome it, but there will certainly be some fascinating straws in the wind about what the reign of ‘King Billy’ will look like.”

One thing that seems certain when talking to friends and advisers of William, both recently and over the past few years, is that he has no intention of emulating his grandmother’s model of doing several hundred engagements a year and being the patron of hundreds and hundreds of charities. Instead, the goal will be to represent fewer causes but have more “impact,” to use a favored term.

Indeed, William himself said as much in uncompromising comments made to print journalists accompanying him on a trip to Singapore in November for the Earthshot Prize , which aims to develop technological solutions to the climate crisis.

William praised his family for “highlighting lots [of causes]” but said, in an explicit rejection of the former royal habit of taking on hundreds of charities ( Prince Philip had more than 800 charities under his wing and Queen Elizabeth II was patron of more than 500) William said, “You have to remain focused. If you spread yourself too thin you just can’t manage it and you won’t deliver the impact or the change that you really want to happen.”

Citing his own involvement in the homelessness sector, he said his goal was to be involved “deeper and longer,” as opposed to “just having loads of causes that you sort of turn up and keep an eye on.”

But be in no doubt: If the last few weeks have shown anything it is that the needs of Kate and the kids will always, for William, trump the demands of state and charitable organizations. Kate is doing well, her team says, but if a conflict arises, William will likely have little hesitation in canceling royal engagements to focus on family.

As Duncan Larcombe, royal commentator and former royal editor of British tabloid The Sun , told The Daily Beast: “William has made it pretty clear that if push comes to shove, he will prioritize his wife and kids over royal duties. He is torn at the moment because he obviously has responsibilities to his family but also to his work as a royal. Doing more stuff online is clearly one way of balancing those demands.”

President Biden visits Prince William park to talk solar, youth involvement on Earth Day

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

U.S. President Joe Biden speaks on Earth Day at Prince William Forest Park on April 22, 2024 in Triangle, Virginia. Biden, along with Sens. Bernie Sanders (D-VT), Edward Markey (D-MA), and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), announced a seven billion dollar "Solar For All" program with the Environmental Protection Agency and an American Climate Corps initiative, while commemorating the 54th anniversary of Earth Day, started in 1970 to raise awareness and support for environmental protection. (Photo by Andrew Harnik/Getty Images)

President Joe Biden stopped by Prince William Forest Park in Triangle on Monday, as the country celebrated Earth Day, to tout two initiatives to combat climate change: expanding solar access and creating jobs to fuel America’s environmental efforts.

Called the Solar for All program, Biden told the crowd that families could save about $400 a year on their electric bills by tapping into the federal initiative that will provide grant funding to expand the development of solar projects nationwide.

The American Climate Corps is aimed at spurring youth involvement by providing information on training and employment opportunities for climate resilience and clean energy jobs.

“Over the last two years, natural disasters and extreme weather in America have cost $270 billion in damages,” Biden said. ”And the impacts we’re seeing [are] decades in the making, [and] because of inaction are only going to get worse, more frequent, ferocious and costly.”

The Solar for All program, under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, awarded $7 billion nationwide with about $156 million for Virginia.

The program, Biden said, would reduce 5 million metric tons in greenhouse gas emissions, which include the carbon dioxide pollutants that become trapped in the atmosphere, warming the planet and leading to more intense and frequent fires and flooding.

Virginia has already taken steps to use renewable energy sources, including solar: In 2020, the General Assembly passed the Virginia Clean Economy Act, which seeks to decarbonize the grid by mid-century.

En route to that goal, the legislature recently expanded a shared solar program for Dominion Energy customers and created one for Appalachian Power customers, so that residents who may have faulty or shady roofs can get solar from a central facility of panels that other community members may also subscribe to.

Tax incentives for building solar on rooftops and brownfields, including formerly mined lands, were also expanded in Virginia’s 2024 legislative session. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, which includes Northern Virginia jurisdictions, recently adopted a goal for 250,000 rooftops to install solar panels.

The Virginia Department of Energy said about 50% of the state’s households are eligible to benefit from the Solar for All program, which will have access to the federal funding for the next five years.

“Adding more residential solar is essential to our all of the above approach for clean and affordable energy in Virginia,” said the department’s director Glenn Davis. “Virginia also recognizes the significant economic development and job growth opportunities across the Commonwealth that will accompany this growth in residential solar and welcomes new investment by the solar industry.”

Southern Environmental Law Center staff attorney Josephus Allmond said, the federal investment can go toward expanding the state’s shared solar opportunities, among others, while going “ a long way for low- to moderate-income Virginians, a group that’s largely been left out of the residential solar conversation.”

“ The award will go towards the range of different solar programs: direct ownership, third-party ownership, and subscriber-based,” Allmond said. The “transformative award” will make Virginia’s clean energy transition more equitable, Allmond continued, by “providing more access to solar leasing and power purchase agreements, increasing access to financing, and removing barriers to interconnection.”

On the job front, Biden’s announcement came at a park created about a hundred years ago by the Civilian Conservation Corps under the New Deal, which was the blueprint for the American Climate Corps that both U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, and U.S. Sen. Ed Marky, D-Mass, have advocated for.

Job seekers can visit the board’s website for more information on  over 2,000 positions in 36 states, including Virginia, Biden said.

“Just like a century ago, the Climate Corps is part of a vision affirming that our environmental and economic future are intertwined,” Ocasio-Cortez said before Biden took the stage. “So let’s invest in both. I truly believe that the young people who join this first American Climate Corps cohort are and will continue to become profoundly influential leaders in the United States.”

The creation of the new corps comes after the U.S. EPA last year announced an initiative to involve young Americans by creating the Youth Advisory Council, which included 21-year-old Sophia Kianni, of McLean.

In Virginia, several high schools have incorporated climate study programs, as have environmental organizations, like the Chesapeake Bay Foundation , which offers programs geared toward teaching youth about environmental issues.

A bill this past session introduced by Del. Betsy Carr, D-Richmond would have created climate change and environmental literacy instructional materials and model policies in Virginia’s schools. But Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed it, saying the state’s Standards of Learning already provide instructional material related to environmental issues.

Governor amends, vetoes and signs energy, environment bills

“ The first year of the [Solar for All] program will be set aside for planning the distribution of funds,” according to the Department of Energy. Funding for rooftop or shared solar programs will become available in 2025.

Prince William's sweet revelation comes after he paid a special visit to St Michael's Church of England High School in Rowley Regis after he was initially invited by 12-year-old schoolboy, Freddie Hadley, who posted a letter on X last October.

The group launched the #AmIManlyEnough campaign last year to tackle the stigma around male mental health and encourage men and boys to communicate more about their feelings.

William opened up about his inspiration around his work on mental health, telling the students: "It started really when I was doing lots of charitable work, I never set out to look out into mental health, particularly male mental health.

"I was interested in homelessness, depression, addiction, all these separate areas and I hadn't really put them altogether as a jigsaw - what are we looking at? What are we trying to fix? It all came together as a mental health piece.

"My passion, if you like, has moved now into male mental health because of the stats you [James] mentioned at the beginning, about the suicide rate in young men is just terrifying, and I wanted to do something about it."

Why Prince William and Prince Harry Are Both Heading to Singapore Soon

King Charles' sons are traveling to the same place in the next few months

Prince William and Prince Harry both have trips to Singapore on the calendar.

King Charles ' sons are both traveling to the island republic in Southeast Asia to promote causes close to heart in the coming months, though their visits don’t overlap. Prince William, 41, is expected to step out in Singapore on Nov. 7 for the 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony, while Sentebale announced Monday that Prince Harry, 38, will play in the 2023 Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup at the Singapore Polo Club on Aug. 12.

The Earthshot Prize announced in May that the third annual awards ceremony would be held in Singapore following an inaugural launch in London in 2021 and a second cycle in Boston in December 2022. The Prince of Wales attended both ceremonies with his wife, Kate Middleton , though it remains unclear if the Princess of Wales will join him in Asia for the next event.

The couple's three children — Prince George , 10, Princess Charlotte , 8, and Prince Louis , 5 — have yet to attend an Earthshot Prize ceremony. Plus, the little royals will likely be busy at school.

For the first time ever, the awards will be held with during a special Earthshot Week with extra programming starting Nov. 6.

"The Earthshot Prize is all about showing the world that solutions to some of the biggest environmental challenges we face are out there. After two years of discovering impactful ideas and innovations, I am delighted that The Earthshot Prize is traveling to Singapore, where the groundbreaking solutions of our 2023 Finalists will be celebrated,” Prince William said in a statement when the next Earthshot destination was announced.

Before that happens, the Prince of Wales will also hop across the pond for a trip to New York City . William will attend the second annual Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit on Sept. 19, which includes the exciting announcement of the 15 finalists for the 2023 Earthshot Prize.

Inspired by President John F. Kennedy ’s Moonshot mission to land a man on the moon in a decade, William created the Earthshot Prize in 2020 to incentivize the next generation of environmental change by reviving and repairing the land, air and sea. Winners across five categories — Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate — receive over $1 million in prize money and support to scale solutions for global impact, with plans to award prizes until 2030.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry will travel to Asia even sooner — in the coming weeks! The Duke of Sussex, 38, will hit the polo pitch in Singapore for the Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup on Saturday, Aug. 12, competing for the Royal Salute Sentebale Team. Prince Harry founded Sentebale with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006 to help children and young people affected by poverty, inequality, and HIV/AIDS in southern Africa. Since 2010, the Polo Cup has raised over $14 million for the organization's important work.

Sharing more about the focus this year, Prince Harry said in a statement, "The annual Polo Cup is essential to Sentebale’s vital work ensuring children and young people are healthy, resilient, and able to thrive. The funds raised this year will support our Clubs and Camps programme, which provides intensive psychosocial support to young people living with HIV. In a time where being HIV positive is no longer a death sentence, we are empowering young people to know their status, stay healthy, and eliminate the stigma so that they can break the cycle."

"We are delighted to return to the renowned Singapore Polo Club in August, and are once again enormously grateful for the polo community and our sponsors, in particular ISPS Handa, for their ongoing commitment to Lesotho and Botswana’s youth," he added.

Before he saddles up (and rides against friend and longtime Sentebale ambassador, Nacho Figueras, who will captain the Singapore Polo Club Team), Prince Harry will attend another sporty event in Tokyo, Japan. The Duke of Sussex and Figueras will join the International Sports Promotion Society (ISPS) Sports Values Summit-Special Edition on Wednesday, Aug. 9, participating in the conference on the power of sport, community and philanthropy.

“ISPS Handa are delighted to be partnering with Sentebale this August on the special edition of ISPS Sports Values Summit in Tokyo and the annual Polo Cup in Singapore. Our respective organisations share a mutual responsibility to empower and aid those most in need and believe we can use the power of sport to do so,” said Dr. Haruhisa Hands, founder of ISPS.

Harry has stayed close to his California home for the Sentebale Polo Cup in recent years, as the equestrian event was held in Aspen, Colorado, in 2021 and 2022.

Though Harry and William share a love of polo and use the sport to fundraise for important causes, with William riding in his annual Royal Charity Polo Day on July 6, the distance between them continues. The brothers were last in the same place for the coronation of their father King Charles and Queen Camilla in London on May 6. Prince William participated in the church service at Westminster Abbey, while Prince Harry flew home to the U.S. soon after the ceremony.

Prince William to resume royal duties after Princess Kate's cancer diagnosis

LONDON — Britain's Prince William is set to return to official royal duties Thursday for the first time since his wife, Kate, the Princess of Wales, announced she was receiving treatment for cancer .

William, the Prince of Wales and heir to the throne, will visit west London and the adjacent county of Surrey to highlight the work of community and environmental impact organizations in the area, Kensington Palace said in a statement Tuesday.

They will be William's first public engagements since Kate revealed almost a month ago that she was undergoing chemotherapy for an as-yet unspecified form of cancer.

In the weeks before the news became public, William, 41, canceled a number of engagements , including a memorial service for his godfather, King Constantine of Greece, as he juggled being with his wife and looking after their children.

After Kate's video announcement, the couple missed the Easter Sunday service in Windsor, a high-profile annual royal engagement.

On Thursday, William will visit Surplus to Supper, a food bank that distributes more than 3 metric tons of food per day, much of which would otherwise go to landfills. He will also stop by a youth center in West London to which the food bank sends regular donations.

"Protecting the environment for future generations is one of The Prince of Wales’s key priorities and in 2020 he launched The Earthshot Prize, a global environmental prize and platform to discover, award, celebrate and scale ground-breaking solutions to repair and regenerate the planet," Kensington Palace said.
