The scenery is spectacular and there is a lot of opportunity for being active whether you dive, raft, zip-line, cycle or even hike to the summit of an active volcano. The traditional Balinese gentle culture is prevalent on the island and especially in the east, which remains fairly untouched by tourism. For nice restaurants, bars and boutiques it’s wonderful to spend a couple of days in Seminyak. And I haven’t even started on the beaches…

Where to go

Bright fabrics flutter gently in the breeze while inviting waves lap the soft grey sands of Seminyak’s beaches. This resort area on the island’s west coast just north of Kuta, is Bali’s most stylish beach locale.

With lush greenery and steep rice terraces that flank the soaring banks of the Ayung River, Ubud is one of Bali‘s most scenic and relaxed destinations. It is also peppered with the island’s most important holy sites, temples and artisan workshops.

Spectacularly located between the striking Mount Agung and the serene Lombok Strait, Manggis offers a slower, more traditional stride on Bali’s eastern shores.

On the western side of the Bukit Peninsula, Jimbaran blends its working fishing village atmosphere with a collection of exclusive and tasteful hotels. Almost like a more chilled version of Seminyak, it boasts some of Bali’s most beautiful sandy beaches and calm, clear waters for swimming.

Set on Bali’s south-eastern coast, 40 minutes from Denpasar airport, Nusa Dua is a private enclave where you find some of Bali’s best hotels that line white sandy beaches.

While I also have read that getting a private car with driver for a day is a better way to go. I assume in this case, you will have to buy entry tickets at each place (are there long lines?). Do you also get a guide at each place?

Like at the sacred monkey sanctuary- if you had private car /driver I assume he parks somewhere and waits for you. So do we hire a guide there? How does that work?

Is one option over better than others?

Do you need guides for all the places in Bali ?

Many people hire a driver, this allows you to go where you want, stay as long as you want and it is much more affordable as you are not paying per person. The driver will assist you and suggest a suitable itinerary, suggest where to stop for lunch or take photos and even help with ticket purchases if required. You do not need a guide everywhere you go. If you decide to use a guide you pay for this service. Drivers are easy to find on the street and will be offering you 'transport' and 'day trips'. You can also contact one of the many recommended drivers we have listed on the forum. Look on the right hand side of this page and click on the topic "Recommended Driver's List Update 2024".

It’s approximately IDR700,000 for a day’s sightseeing; per vehicle, not per person depending on where you’re located and the itinerary.

Personally we don’t engage a guide when sightseeing. If you prefer to have one your driver, if registered as a guide, can accompany you. Depends on your itinerary as, let’s say, climbing Mt. Batur you‘ll be allocated a guide.

Be aware of the monkeys in the Monkey Forest, Ubud . They like to steal your possessions. Later in the afternoon they’re quieter as they’ve been fed by the hordes of tourists in the mornings.

You have 3 options regarding day tours.

Another is private car and driver. It includes car , driver, petrol, pick up and drop off. You set the time you allocate at each venue. You pay entrance fees and parking fees. The driver waits for you with the car . Price is aprox Rp 700,000 - Rp 800,000 for full 8 - 10 hour depending on distance travelled.

Then you have private car with driver who is also a registered guide. You get the same as above but the driver/guide is also allowed to accompany you into the venues and explain about the attraction and Balinese Hindu customs. You will probably pay a little more for this service.

Most attractions are self explanatory and a guide is not needed. Some attractions have their own guides available to hire at a price.

Do we tip the driver at the end of the day? What is appropriate?

Another question - we are from US and where is the best place to get the $ exchanged? I assume we have to make cash payments in local currency everywhere, correct?

Tipping is a personal thing. Some people tip and others do not. If you are very happy with the service your driver provided then perhaps Rp 50,000 - Rp 100,000 at the end of the day. Nobody pays for bad service.

Re tipping, on a full day out, I will give the driver 100k as a tip on top of the agreed daily rate + 50k for them to buy lunch.

This is my personal choice. Some people don't wish to tip anything as they feel that the agreed rate is all that the driver should receive.
