Auckland to Tauranga Itinerary Loop: 16 Unique Stops

View from about half way to the top of Mt. Maunganui.

Are you driving from Auckland to Tauranga? Why not turn it into a mini road trip? That’s what we do!

Either way, you’re in for a treat as the journey passes through some of New Zealand’s beautiful scenery. With two ways to go, we recommend planning a driving itinerary before you head out and including a few stops along the way.

To help with that, we’ve created this guide which highlights some of the best places to stop on your Auckland to Tauranga road trip. From hidden gems and natural wonders to popular attractions and local eateries, there are plenty of options for unforgettable stops.

Importantly, there are two main routes that will bring you from Auckland to Tauranga, so we typically drive it as a loop. Therefore, we are not retracing our steps on the way back to Auckland.

Starting our trip to Tauranga on the Southern motorway, we stop at impressive gardens and natural sites like Hamilton Gardens, Blue Spring, as well as the Hobbiton movie set. Our return trip includes more natural beauty and quaint NZ towns.

So read on and start planning your perfect road trip today!

As American expats who have been living in and exploring NZ for over 20 years, we see things from both a local’s perspective and from that of a visitor. Therefore, we understand what it’s like to come here and have things be similar, but not always exactly what we are used to. We share the information on this page from this perspective.

Interactive Auckland to Tauranga map

All suggested stops in this itinerary are featured on the map either in red (on the main road) or yellow (requires extra driving).

Either of the two route options can be individually selected by clicking the expand / collapse icon in the upper left corner of the map. Both are initially active, creating the loop.

Drive times

  • Loop as highlighted on the map (Auckland to Tauranga to Auckland): 6 hours 10 minutes
  • Auckland to Tauranga via Putaruru: 3 hours 10 minutes (extra 20 minutes to include Matamata)
  • Tauranga to Auckland via Waihi: 2 hours 40 minutes

Car hire (rental)

Unless you are using your own vehicle, you will need to hire a car. We always rent from RentalCars. They offer a comprehensive list of multinational and local rental car agents, ratings on specific car types, and agency ratings. Importantly, they often have lower prices than going direct.

Whether you rent from them or not, it’s still the perfect place to begin your search.  Click here to compare options and check availability at RentalCars.com

Auckland Town Hall in Aotea Square, Auckland New Zealand

New Zealand’s largest city is filled with history and culture, as well as many stunning natural attractions . It’s my home, and I am always finding new and interesting things to do here.

We have detailed all our favourite things to do in Auckland here , but the three that top our list are hiking one of the 48 volcanoes, visiting a museum, or any of a number of adrenaline junkie activities.

Auckland to Tauranga via Hamilton and Blue Spring

Divided into three segments:

  • Auckland to Hamilton
  • Hamilton to Putaruru
  • Putaruru to Tauranga

Auckland to Hamilton (segment 1)

blooming pohutukawas at the Auckland Botanic Gardens, one of the best things to do in South Auckland

Auckland’s Botanic Gardens

As we head south, our first stop on our drive from Auckland city is the Botanic Gardens. Here, we explore the 156-acre expanse (including 10 acres of native forest) and enjoy 10,000 plants from various countries. Established in 1982, it opens every morning at 8am. More things to do in South Auckland can be found here .

We typically drive through, but you will pass the Huntly Power Station and wonder what it is. While we once heard someone call it the “Taj Mahal of New Zealand”, to us that seems a bit over the top.

The country’s longest river passes through Hamilton, creating recreational opportunities and serene walking paths that are among the many things to do in Hamilton . The city’s shining star is the world-renowned Hamilton Gardens . Still free to enter, we highly recommend you allocate at least a couple of hours to stroll through the gardens.

If you have more time here, don’t miss Riff Raff Square (for Rocky Horror Picture Show fans) or the Waikato Museum.

Hamilton to Putaruru (segment 2)

Bicycles on the track at the Velodrome in Cambridge NZ

Nicknamed “the town of trees and champions”, Cambridge appears as a peaceful stop along the way, yet it is home to several New Zealand champions. These include Olympic medalists in rowing, cycling, and equestrian events, not to mention a number of champion thoroughbreds.

The town is one of our personal favourite getaway spots, as there are more than enough things to do in Cambridge . Topping our list is a walk around Lake Te Koo Utu, watching a bicycle training session at the Velodrome, or rowing at nearby Karapiro Lake.

Arapuni Suspension Bridge and dam (optional)

A bit off the beaten path, the 152-metre-long suspension bridge spans the Arapuni gorge at 54 metres above the river. If you are adding this stop, we recommend going from here directly to Putaruru and then to Tirau.

In the late 1980s, a resident of Tirau had a unique idea to help revive the town – creating giant sculptures out of corrugated iron. Today, it is an excellent spot for travellers to have a bite to eat, take a break from driving, browse craft stores, and marvel at these feats of art.

Putaruru (Blue Spring)

Possibly the most gorgeous spot on the North Island, I highly recommend allocating a minimum of an hour to stop at Blue Spring. The stroll along the Te Waihou Walkway is beautiful in its own right, even before you reach the spring. We have detailed it with video footage here .

Note: Access to Blue Spring / Te Waihou Walkway from Leslie Road is temporarily closed due to a landslip and rockfall. Access from the Whites Road end is still open. It entails a 9km walk to the Blue Spring and return. Check the official site here for updates .

Putaruru to Tauranga (segment 3)

Matamata for Hobbiton (Optional Add-on)

Hobbiton is the genuine Middle Earth. Enveloped by the shire, we found ourselves surrounded by its green pastures and hobbit holes. While it’s one of the country’s many Lord of the Rings film locations , it is the only one with an intact set. In fact, all others have been returned to their breathtaking pre-filming original appearance. Moreover, your guide will narrate stories and inside knowledge while you are there.

Importantly, visitors can’t simply walk into Middle Earth. Hobbiton is only available as a guided tour. Reserve your Hobbiton guided tour here .

Rotorua (Optional Add-on)

New Zealand’s world-famous geothermal region is a must-see for visitors. There is so much to do here. We usually spend one to four nights when we bring visitors. We have written a lot about it, including Rotorua highlights and free things to do in Rotorua .

McLaren Falls Park

Named for its multiple cascade waterfall, McLaren Falls Park sits a the southern edge of the Kaimai Ranges. The easiest way to enjoy the falls is from the viewing bridge, but if you have the time, enjoy the waterfall track through often dense bush, offering spectacular views while walking to the top of the falls ( one of our favourite waterfalls in NZ ).

However, our highlight was a glowworm kayak adventure along the river. Read our full review here , or reserve your glowworm kayak adventure here .

Tauranga and Mt Maunganui (segment 4)

Relaxing at a cafe on Wharf Street in the Strand area is one of the best things to do in Tauranga.

Tauranga is either the destination or the centre of our loop. Either way, we like to spend a minimum of a few days enjoying the Bay of Plenty. We will admit we spent the majority of our time at one of New Zealand’s best beaches, either in the water, resting on the white sandy beach, or climbing to the top of Mount Maunganui and enjoying the view.

The rest of the time, we do one of the many fun things to do in Tauranga and Mt Maunganui .

Tauranga to Auckland via Waihi

Divided into two segments:

  • Tauranga to Waihi
  • Waihi to Auckland

Tauranga to Waihi (segment 5)

Katikati is another charming small town in New Zealand. It’s a great place to visit, especially for bird lovers! The Katikati Bird Gardens is the perfect spot to explore and observe some of the many species of birds that live in the area. Its aviaries offer visitors an opportunity to see a wide range of local and exotic birds up close.

A quaint town, Waihi is home to the country’s richest gold mine that’s still active, offering educational programs about how gold is mined, workshops and tours. You can reserve your guided tour of the mine here . The other highlight is the nearby Owharoa Falls. Plus, there are several public parks in the area where you can relax and enjoy some outdoor recreation, local shops, and restaurants.

Waihi Beach

Relax or swim along 9km (5.5 miles) of sun-drenched beach at this much-loved holiday destination. Rated as one of the safest surfing beaches in the country, it’s also well known for its sunrise. The beach is a great place to start the day.

Waihi to Auckland (segment 6)

The giant L&P bottle in Paeroa New Zealand

Karangahake Gorge

This 4km historic long walkway winding along the Ohinemuri river takes about 2-3 hours to complete. Along the way, we passed native bush, limestone bluffs and spectacular views of the gorge walls. The track also passes through several historic gold mining sites and tunnels from the late 1800s. The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, making it a great spot to explore with family or friends.

Known as New Zealand’s antique capital , Paeroa’s antique shopping ranges from art galleries to shops full of vintage trinkets and furniture. Intermixed are several lovely cafes and fish and chips shops, making it a perfect stop for lunch.

Don’t miss the giant L&P (Lemon and Paeroa) bottle that makes for a great selfie shot. Tip: Don’t be lazy like me; park the car and take a photo with the sculpture.

A bit of an eclectic fun stop; we had a blast at the Ngatea Water Gardens . Bring your sense of humour, as the guy who designed this place sure has one. Well-placed subtle laughs waiting to be discovered kept us giggling as we strolled through the picturesque gardens. And if that’s not enough, Aurhur’s Canny Museum (entrance inside the gardens) displays over eleven thousand different cans.

There are two great reasons to stop in Miranda. Nature lovers will head to the Miranda Shorebirds Centre to watch shorebirds in the wild from bird hides. Or, if you are looking for some family fun and relaxation, spend some time at Miranda Hot Springs.

Next stop: Auckland.

Extra things to bring on your Tauranga to Auckland road trip

Normally, our free packing list is more than sufficient, but for this road trip, there are two additional things we want to recommend.

  • Torch (flashlight) or headlamp
  • Binoculars , especially if you are stopping at Miranda Shorebird Centre

New Zealand has been on my list for so long. Would love to visit soon. This looks like such a wonderful road trip guide. Definitely would take the loop on the map. A 6-hour drive there sounds amazing to see sites and explore!

I am building my plans for a visit to New Zealand. And your Auckland to Tauranga Loop provided some great stops to plan. Get to know we could do the whole loop in 6 hours. But I am sure it would take much longer for us. I might need to plan an overnight stop … or two ??? A one hour stop at places like Putaruru would surely not be enough.

Hobbiton – I’m there! The museum shaped like a dog is wild.

Stop #1: Pokeno

Panoramic view on river valley with lush green and river flowing through the shot during sunny day with blue sky and some clouds. On the picture is Waikato, longest river in New Zealand.

As for our first suggestion, we’re pointing you towards Pokeno . This charming little town tucked away in New Zealand’s Waikato region is a treasure trove of delights. Now, why would you want to swing by? Two words: bacon and ice cream. Trust us, the smell alone is worth the detour.

Every Sunday, the place buzzes with the lively Franklin Markets, boasting over 70 stalls of drool-worthy food, drinks, and one-of-a-kind arts and crafts. Got some kiddos in tow? They’ll have a blast at the array of playgrounds, all connected by picturesque walking tracks.

Sightseeing #1: Mt William Walkway

Ready to take your New Zealand adventure up a notch? Head to the Mt William Walkway . This scenic trail takes you through open farmland and native bush in the Mount William Scenic Reserve. Peaks like Mt William and Puketutu offer panoramic views of Waikato, Franklin, and some parts of Auckland. Perfect for that next Instagram post! Just remember, it may be closed during lambing season. Time it right for a true Kiwi countryside experience.

Sightseeing #2: Pokeno Waterfall

Hidden in Pokeno Village is the quiet yet captivating Pokeno Waterfall , also known as Leathams Stream Waterfall. Amidst lush greenery, this peaceful place offers a gentle waterfall track over rocks. It’s not towering, but its soothing mist makes it perfect for relaxation and snapping photos. A short stroll from the car park will get you there. This well-kept spot is a must-visit, offering a serene escape in the heart of Waikato.

Stop #2: Ngatea

Ngatea

Continuing on State Highway 2, you’ll hit Ngatea , a charming little town set in the Hauraki Plains. This isn’t your average rest stop; it’s loaded with neat shops, lip-smacking food joints, and cosy places for the night.

Feel like stretching your legs? The eccentric water gardens are worth a look. Need to unwind? Pioneer Park is your go-to. Travelling with youngsters? They’ll go wild for the playground and skatepark. Plus, with its roots deep in Maori culture and European settlement, Ngatea lets you get a real feel of New Zealand.

Sightseeing #1: Ngatea Water Gardens

Once you land in Ngatea, you just can’t miss the enchanting Ngatea Water Gardens . This natural beauty is like stepping into a fairy tale, each pathway leading to a new delightful surprise. Stroll past bridges, lily ponds, and waterfalls, and say ‘hi’ to the friendly locals – fish, ducks, and even New Zealand’s oldest turtles! With its quirky signs, gift shop, can museum, and picnic spots, it’s a fun-filled escape that’s wheelchair-friendly too!

Sightseeing #2: Miranda Hot Springs

Now, how about a dip in the largest thermal swimming pool in the southern hemisphere? That’s right, at Miranda Hot Springs , just an hour’s drive from Auckland, you can soak up the warmth and let your worries float away. There’s an adults-only sauna pool for some peace, and the kids get their own pool and playground. Plus, there are coin-operated barbecues, a cafe, and beautiful surroundings. It’s not just a hot spring—it’s a rejuvenating retreat with deep roots in Maori heritage.

Stop #3: Waihi

Waihi

Next up, Waihi , New Zealand’s gold mining hotspot. Here, history meets adventure. Visit the Gold Discovery Centre, check out the mine pit, or ride the Goldfields vintage railway.

But there’s more to Waihi – it’s your entry point to the famous Hauraki Rail Trail and the scenic Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway. Add to that charming old buildings, lovely cafes, and close access to the glorious 9km Waihi Beach. Waihi truly is New Zealand’s ‘Heart of Gold’. So, why not add some sparkle to your travel with a stop at Waihi?

Sightseeing #1: Waihi Beach

Once you’re in Waihi Beach , you’ll feel your routine slip away. This 9km stretch of pristine sand isn’t just one of New Zealand’s safest surf spots but also a bustling hub for fish and chips shops and delicious food joints. Head over to Bowentown and Anzac Bay for some fishing, kayaking, or surfing. For the hikers, Orokawa Bay and William Wright Falls are must-visits. With stunning views, great food, and loads to do, it’s the perfect coastal getaway.

Sightseeing #2: Goldfields Vintage Railway

Take a ride on the Goldfields Vintage Railway for a trip down memory lane. . This nostalgic journey meanders through the lush landscapes between Waihi and Waikino, offering glimpses into Southern Coromandel’s gold-mining history. Stop at Waikino Station for a scone or explore the Karangahake Gorge and its historical sites. Whether you’re a history nut or a nature lover, this trip promises to be a memorable adventure.

Stop #4: Katikati

Katikati

Now, if you really want to just chill out and appreciate some art on your journey, swing by Katikati , New Zealand’s vibrant ‘Mural Town’. Nestled between Waihī Beach and Tauranga, this sunny town is a living art gallery with over 60 murals narrating its rich past.

And hey, it’s not just about the art—Katikati boasts lush kiwifruit and avocado plantations, thanks to its fertile volcanic soil. Poetry lover? The Haiku Pathway has the most extensive collection of Haikus outside Japan. With its mix of art, history, and nature, Katikati is one stop you’ll surely love.

Sightseeing #1: The Arts Junction

Hang out at the Arts Junction in Katikati, and you’ll find it’s more than just a visit—it’s a whole experience. Let your inner artist shine in ‘New Zealand’s Mural Town’, where over 76 art pieces narrate their past. Take a relaxed walk along the Haiku Pathway, with poems etched on boulders, and connect with the Bird Walk for some bird spotting. Don’t forget to explore the cycleways and walkways for some epic harbour views and taste the best avocados in town!

Sightseeing #2: Katikati Bird Gardens

Get ready for a chill day at Katikati Bird Gardens , a place of year-round tranquillity. Wander through gardens dotted with water-lily ponds, mature trees, and vibrant flower beds. Keep an eye out for various bird species, either wandering freely or housed in aviaries. Follow the sealed paths through clusters of colourful camellias, magnolias, azaleas, and lilies.

Stop #5: Ōmokoroa

Ōmokoroa

Craving some tranquillity before hitting Tauranga? Ōmokoroa , a tucked-away treasure in the Bay of Plenty, has got you covered. Known as ‘Our Seaside Paradise’, this coastal retreat is ideal for slowing down.

Here, you can take easy strolls on picturesque trails, get your adrenaline pumping with bike rides on cool cycle paths, or just bask in the peaceful vibe. With its breathtaking sea views, warm community, and pristine gardens, it’s easy to see why locals dub it paradise! So, how about a detour to Ōmokoroa? It’s the perfect remedy to city life’s constant rush.

Sightseeing #1: Ōmokoroa Domain

Head over to Ōmokoroa Domain , one of the popular attractions near Tauranga alongside Mount Maunganui, where the calm harbour and peaceful beach are just waiting for you. Pack a picnic, bring your swim gear or kayak, and make a day of it. Kids? They’ll love the playground. If breathtaking vistas are your thing, follow the paths to Gerald Crapp Reserve. Oh, and if you’ve got a SUP or kayak, Motuhoa Island is ripe for exploration.

Sightseeing #2: Ōmokoroa Golf Club

It’s time to tee off at Ōmokoroa Golf Club , one of New Zealand’s prettiest courses. Casual player or seasoned golfer, it doesn’t matter – the scenic 18 holes will win you over. And let’s not forget the Kiwi hospitality and mouth-watering food from their kitchen. With its rich history and gorgeous location, this is a great spot to unwind and enjoy the game.

A Road Trip – Auckland to Tauranga

March 10, 2010 by Rosemary Neave 4 Comments

Late summer, a meeting in Tauranga – why not make the most of it, and turn it into a road trip to show my girlfriend Liz a bit more this amazing country. I checked the map – there are two main routes to Tauranga (though there are probably hundreds more diversions if you want them!). The main route on Google maps takes you via Matamata. The BEST route is to go through Waihi – snuggling up under the Coromandel Ranges all the way to the coast.

Don’t want to be too pedantic, but your first stop was NgatEa and the gorge is KarangahaKe. Karangahape is a notorious road in Auckland city. Cheers.

We will be arriving at Auckland Airport at about 12:30pm from South Island. And will be travelling to our accommodation at Mt Maunganui which is booked for a few nights. What will be the best route for us to take? anything we should be stopping off on the way?

We have booked Hobiniton on the return leg and plan to pop down to Rotorua for a day trip on one day while in the region.

Any help greatly received

road trip auckland to tauranga

Basically 3 routes with all starting with State Highways

20B & 20 to SH 1.

Thence SH 1 to Pokeno & via SH 2. Used by heavy

traffic (no steep climbs). Highlight is the Karangahake

Gorge. Waihi town can be by passed by using Old

Tauranga Road.

Second route is via SHs 27 27 & 29.

Third is SH1 to Ohinewai "cross country" to Tahuna

and thence as per 2nd route. My preference.

Routes 2 and 3 involve crossing over the Kaimai Range

with a steep climb. Part of Takitimu Drive @ Tauranga

is a Toll Road.

Easiest route to follow is the southern motorway and onto SH2 at the major motorway interchange. You continue on this route through Karangahake Gorge into Waihi and Katikati for Tauranga.

There are various options, including the Kaimai Range, but the main route to Tauranga nowadays is SH2 and it's very well signposted en route.

You can always use SH1 from Tirau to Auckland after you visit Hobbiton. Take SH29 from Tauranga to Tirau, although there is a short cut from the Te Poi junction leading into Matamata before Tirau.

For your day-trip to Rotorua, either the scenic SH36, or the slightly longer SH2 & SH33.

Many thanks.

Anything of interest to stop and look at on route? That will probably be the deciding factor on which one to go for.

SH2? Karangahake gorge is a picturesque, historic and convenient stop for a break and short walks. Full of gold-mining history and a beautiful river through the gorge.

Further to Frangipani's posts which I concur to in regard to

tourists - I have driven it too many times.

Entering the K gorge there is a "double deck" bridge crossing

park at the end. Then you can walk a "loop" track taking about

an hour. Clockwise you walk over the bridge, though a 1006 m.

old railway tunnel and return to the car park via the river bank.

There is gold in them hills ! For a huge hole in the ground

stop at Waihi.

At the other end of the gorge you could cross on the bridge

and take in the Owharoa water falls - about 200m. from SH 2.

Please note that SH 2 has very heavy traffic (for NZ) !

road trip auckland to tauranga

What is the fastest easiest most direct route from MT M to airport

Reverse of "my" reply 1 using SH2 and "cutting off"

Waihi by using Old Tauranga & Pukekauri Roads.

There are no tolls on that route.

Speaking of tolls

I encountered one today on my way

"card" go to " http://nzta.govt.nz " web site. Then "navigate"

your way "through" to the "card" payment "portal"

within the next 5 "working" days.

Actually it is quite simple if you "press the right keys".

I live in Tauranga and drive that way often. My favourite route is via State Highway 2. You could stop off in Waihi and have a look at the old Martha mine (open cast). The windows walk in the Karangahake gorge is lovely. IMO it's a much more interesting and picturesque drive than via the Kaimai's and you will be going that way on the way back from Hobbiton anyway.

Don't bother trying to find the Old Tauranga Road to avoid Waihi (you only save a few minutes, it's not worth the stress when you don't know where you're going). You can easily avoid any toll roads in Tauranga as there are good alternatives. The toll road that you can take from Tauranga to Rotorua (the Eastern Link) is worthwhile though, this will mean you don't need to drive through Te Puke and it's a nice road with a speed limit of 110km in places.

Best Road Trips in Auckland (4 Best Destinations in 2024

It may not be the capital of New Zealand, but Auckland is the largest and most exciting city on the North Island. It’s a great base to use for visiting the island’s sublime beaches and spectacular volcanic features. It’s an outdoor adventurer’s paradise, too, with skiing and snowboarding in the winter and everything you can imagine the rest of the year!

This guide will help you plan your road trip from Auckland. Whether you want to spend a leisurely day at the beach, enjoy some extreme sports, or just take in the beautiful landscapes, we’re here to help. Not only will we show you the best road trips from Auckland, but also some of the top places to stay. So, start up your engines and let’s go!

Why Roadtrip from Auckland?

Driving in auckland, as far (north) as you can go, napier via the coromandel peninsula, the thermal explorer highway, piha beach and back, what to pack for a road trip in auckland, insurance in new zealand/auckland, final thoughts on the best road trips from auckland.

New Zealand Auckland skyline

Road tripping is one of the best ways to see New Zealand . However, it can understandably be quite nerve-wracking to drive in a new country. Here are five of the top reasons to consider a North Island Road Trip.

  • Accessibility: It’s easier to get deep into the island’s forest parks and most remote beaches with your own car.
  • Outdoor Activities: While you can fly between cities in New Zealand, you don’t want to miss out on natural spas, mountains, and lakes.
  • Flexibility: Renting a car or campervan gives you more time to stop off and stay longer if you really fall in love with a place, which is sure to happen at some point.
  • Wild Camping: You can wild camp pretty much anywhere in NZ (or park up your campervan). Renting a car means you can find your very own spot, and it’s easy to transport your stuff, too.
  • Public Transport: New Zealand only has around five million inhabitants, so it neither has nor needs a mass public transport system. Therefore, the best way to see it is by road in your own vehicle!

You must be convinced that a road trip from Auckland is a good idea by now. So, let’s get some of the boring admin out of the way before we tackle the best road trips on offer!

Queen Street Auckland

Driving in Auckland and New Zealand can be a bit of a frustrating experience. Drivers in NZ are often happy to flout the rules a little, with things like driving through red and amber lights, driving with bare feet or flip flops, and using phones while driving all worryingly common. Basically, the driving style here could do with some work.

Add in windy mountain roads and long travel times, and it’s enough to put some drivers off completely! It shouldn’t though – as many travellers road trip here each year with no problems at all.

It’s straightforward to rent a car in New Zealand. Prices will start at around $30USD per day. Large rental companies are often reliable but, do be careful when it comes to extra charges – such as whether it is high season or low season. Drivers must be 21 and have had their licence for at least a year. You should also be aware of the following:

  • Age Surcharge: You will need to pay an age surcharge if you’re under 25. It’s likely to be anything from $15 USD per day.
  • Bond/Deposit: Some companies offer zero deposit as long as you have provided your debit card/credit card to cover the rental cost and optional extras. But make sure you read the contract!
  • Additional Driver Charge: Expect to pay between $5 – 25 USD for an additional driver per day in New Zealand.

Rental insurance is a must for your North Island road trip. Rather than paying a huge amount with your rental firm, get it from RentalCover.com before turning up at the rental office.

Don’t have a car? Well, we’re going to have to sort that out! Use rentalcars.com to find the best deals on the web and save heaps of cash!

Road Rules in Auckland

You must have a valid driver’s licence either from your own country or international to drive in New Zealand. New Zealand drives on the left side of the road like the UK and Japan, but if you’re from most EU countries or the United States, this might take a little getting used to.

Rules here aren’t that different from anywhere else in the world. It’s the drivers themselves that you have to watch out for. New Zealand drivers can be quite aggressive, especially in cities.

While you shouldn’t speed, and it’s no surprise that this is a rule, most drivers at some point have lost track of their speedometer. Don’t do that here, as there are lots of hidden speed cameras and unmarked police cars that may leave you with a fine.

Road rules aren’t all about driving, so there are a couple more things you should be aware of. It’s illegal to park your car ‘the wrong way’. This just means that the driver side door should not be next to the curb.

Also, pedestrian crossings are not always synced with traffic lights, so don’t speed around a corner if you get a green arrow, there might be someone crossing. Yes, it sounds crazy because it is!

  • From: Auckland
  • To: Cape Reinga
  • Total Distance: 572km
  • Days: 3 – 4
  • Top Road Trips Stops: Whangarei, Paihia (the Bay of Islands), 90 Mile Beach, Cape Reinga

As far north as you can go Auckland

Our first North Island road trip will see you go as far north in New Zealand as it’s possible to go. But not before you stop off at some epic on the northern coast.

Starting in Auckland, this one can be done in as little as 3 – 4 days, but spreading it out over a week will give you more chances to stop off and appreciate incredible places such as the Bay of Islands. You could even arrange a skydive if you’re looking for some white-knuckle thrills!

Road Trip Highlights

  • AH Reed Memorial Park and Whangarei Falls
  • Scuba Diving at Poor Knights Island
  • Kayaking or hiking at Rainbow Falls
  • 90 Mile Beach
  • Cape Reinga Lighthouse and Hiking Trails

Pssst! Need a cheap place to crash in Auckland before you start your road trip? Check out our guide on Where to Stay in Auckland !

Day 1: Auckland – Paihia (3.5 hours, without stops)

Paihia Auckland

Leave Auckland and set your satnav north for Paihia. Driving directly, it will take you just over three hours to cover the 248km journey on State Highway One. However, there are some stops to make on the way there. Whangerei is just over two hours into your trip, and it’s well worth spending a little time there.

Take a walk through the AH Reed Memorial Park and find a picnic table by the Whangarei Falls for some lunch. After you’ve had a rest here, it’s on to Paihia, better known as the gateway to the Bay of Islands – but only after you’ve taken a detour to the public toilets at Kawakawa!

  • Best Things to Do: AH Reed Memorial Park and Whangarei Falls (Whangarei), Hundertwasser toilets (Kawakawa), Waitangi Treaty Grounds and Museum, Haruru Falls (Paihia).
  • Where to Eat: Fat Camel Cafe, Palate Wholesome Collective (Whangarei), Terra Restaurant, Darryl’s Dinner Cruise (Paihia)
  • Where to Stay: Peppertree Lodge , Changing Tides BnB , Studio 10 – a place with a view

Day 2: Stay in Paihia and explore

The Bay of Islands is made up of almost 150 islands, so it seems silly to just spend an afternoon here and then leave. Your second day still has some driving, though. Head out from Paihia to Kerikeri and the Rainbow Falls (Waianiwaniwa).

There are several bushwalks and nature trails nearby, and it’s a popular kayaking spot. Prefer to get out onto the marine reserve? Poor Knights Island is the best place to scuba dive; it’s even got the seal of approval from the great Jacques Cousteau!

  • Best Things to Do: Scuba diving on Poor Knights Island, Hike/Kayak at Rainbow Falls, Eco-cruise in the Bay of Islands from Russell.
  • Where to Eat: MAHA Restaurant @Wharepuke (Kerikeri) TIPSY OYSTER, JFC, Glasshouse Kitchen and Ba (Paihia)
  • Where to Stay: The Mousetrap Backpackers , Falls Motel & Waterfront Campground , Tui Cabin near Kerikeri .

Day 3: Paihia to Cape Reinga via Ninety Mile Beach (3 hours)

Ninety Mile Beach Auckland

The final part of your road trip on North Island sees you bid a fond farewell to Paihia and the Bay of Islands and head north and west. Your first stop is 90-Mile Beach. Confusingly, it’s only 55 miles long, but that still leaves lots of space for things to do.

It’s possible to drive on the beach, though most rental companies won’t allow it as it may damage the car, and there are some dangers. Just follow State Highway One to Cape Reinga. Visit the lighthouse and look out at where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. You could also try a spot of sandboarding!

  • Best Things to Do: Horseriding/Sandboarding/fishing on 90-Mile Beach. Te Araroa, Te Paki Coastal Trails, Seaview Point (Cape Reinga)
  • Where to Eat: Wild Belle, Beachcomber Restaurant, Gecko Cafe. Houhoura Tavern – the most northern pub in New · Zealand.
  • Where to Stay: Pukenui Lodge Motel , Tekao Lodge , Waikorotangi , Houhoura Harbour Studio

On your first day, you’ll head south out of Auckland towards the town of Thames. Thames is the gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula, which is known for incredible beaches and a lot of hidden gems. After checking out the shops and cafes, get back in your car and head to two of the best beaches here.

Cathedral Cove looks like it’s come straight out of a postcard, and you can dig your own heated pool in the sand at Hot Water Beach. There’s enough here to spend two days (or longer) on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Day 3: Coromandel Peninsula to Tauranga (2.5 hours)

You’ll continue to hug that stunning Pacific coastline for the next leg of your journey. State Highway 25 and State Highway 2 are what you’ll need to take, and you could always break up your trip with a stop at Katikati Bird Gardens overlooking Shelly Bay.

Once you arrive in Tauranga, you’ll notice Mount Maunganui – it’s impossible to miss! Choose to hike straight away, or chill out for the afternoon then climb it the morning after for epic views out over the Bay of Plenty.

Spend a day at Gisborne checking out the Rere Falls and admiring the views from Titirangi hill. Then, it’s onto your final stop of Napier. It’s a good job you’re stopping the car here as there are over 100 vineyards nearby! Learn more about the city with an art deco walking or vintage car tour.

  • To: Wellington
  • Total Distance: 687km
  • Top Road Trips Stops: Hobbiton, Rotorua, Lake Taupo, Wellington

Auckland to Wellington

This road trip from Auckland is the best for Lord of the Rings fans. However, you’ll be able to see more than just sites from the Peter Jackson films.

You’ll also see some of the most impressive volcanic sites in New Zealand, including the jewel in the crown, Lake Taupo. Spend a couple of days here swimming, hiking, and riding jet boats before ending in NZ’s capital – Wellington.

Day 1: Auckland to Rotorua (3 hours)

Rotorua Auckland

Leave Auckland and head south on State Highway one towards Rotorua. Before you get there, you’ll be stopping off at Matamata. It might be more familiar to you as Hobbiton, the set from Lord of the Rings.

Spend a couple of hours seeing the houses where Frodo and Bilbo lived before enjoying a flagon of (non-alcoholic) beer at the Green Dragon in Bag End. Then, it’s onto your destination for the night, Rotorua.

  • Best Things to Do: Hobbiton Movie Set, Wairere Falls (highest waterfall on North Island), Skyline Rotorua.
  • Where to Eat: Green Dragon Pub, Chips N’Curry Matamata, Atticus Finch, Stratosfare Restaurant (Rotorua).
  • Where to Stay: Funky Green Voyager , Prince’s Gate Hotel , Kotare Lodge on the Lake

Days 2 to 4: Rotorua to Taupo (1 hour)

There’s loads to do in Rotorua, so spend most of your second day here. One thing you certainly won’t want to miss is the geothermal reserve Wai-O-Tapu. Just some of the things you’re likely to see include geysers and colourful pools.

A cruise on Lake Rotorua could be an option, as could the Waimangu Volcanic Valley over a couple of days. Then, head onto Lake Taupo, one of the most popular destinations on North Island. Here, you can take a jetboat ride on the Waikato River or perhaps a more sedate cruise past the Maori Rock Carvings. Adrenaline seekers can bungee jump here!

  • Best Things to Do: Wai-O-Tapu Geothermal Reserve, Lake Rotorua, Waimnagu Volcanic Valley, Whakarewarewa Living Maori Village, Waikato River jet boat ride, Taupo Bungy.
  • Where to Eat: The Brantry Restaurant, Mole & Chicken Restaurant Cafe and Bar, The Bistro
  • Where to Stay: YHA Taupo – Finlay Jacks Backpackers, Taupo Debretts Spa Resort, The Retro Cabin

Day 5: Taupo to Wellington (5 hours)

Wellington

After a few intense days, you’ll end by travelling from Taupo to Wellington, the capital of New Zealand. You’ll carry on along State Highway One with few places of note to stop off – so just carry on to Wellington and soak up the scenery before hitting attractions like the Wellington Cable Car!

Now that your road trip is over, you have so many possibilities. It’s up to you whether you drive back to Auckland, fly home, or continue over the Cook Strait onto the South Island!

  • Best Things to Do: Wellington Cable Car, ZEALANDIA Ecosanctuary, Te Papa Museum, Mount Victoria
  • Where to Eat: Whitebait, Mr Go’s, Little Penang
  • Where to Stay: The Dwellington , Tree House above Wellington Harbour , Mt Victoria Studio

Piha Beach and Back map Auckland

Not all road trips from Auckland have to be long and arduous multi-day trips. Here’s one for drivers who are just finding their feet and are easing their way into exploring the North Island.

Auckland to Piha Beach is more of a day trip than a road trip, but there are lots of things to do once you park up. Whether you want to enjoy coastal hikes, surf, or check out inland waterfalls, you’ll find that this easy day trip from Auckland is a lot of fun.

  • Piha Beach Surfing
  • Kitekite Falls
  • White’s and Anawhata Beaches Coastal Cliff Walk

Day 1: Auckland to Piha Beach (45 minutes)

Piha Auckland

Your road trip from Auckland to Piha is a short one. Just 45km means you can easily do this in one day, but it’s definitely worth staying overnight in Piha if you have time.

Pick your activity on arrival according to your travel style. A coastal cliff walk to White’s and Anawhata Beaches will take four hours, while the Kite Kite Falls walk is under an hour (one way). From the same car park, you can also access the Piha Valley Track.

  • Best Things to Do: Surf on Piha Beach, Kitekite Falls, White’s Beach and Anawhata Beach hiking trail
  • Where to Eat: Murray Piha, Piha RSA, Piha Cafe
  • Where to Stay: Piha Beachstay , Romantic Piha , Piha Retreat , Piha Hut

Make sure to pack right for New Zealand! On every adventure, there are six things to never go travelling without:

AR Security Belt

1. Security Belt with Hidden Pocket : I never hit the road without my security belt. This is a regular looking belt with a concealed pocket on the inside – you can hide up to twenty notes inside and wear it through airport scanners without it setting them off. This is hands down the best way to hide your cash.

Grayls Geopress Water Bottle

2. Travel Water Bottle : Always travel with a water bottle – it’ll save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl geopress is a true behemoth amongst water bottles acting as a purifier AND temperature regulator – so you can enjoy a cold red bull, or a hot coffee, no matter where you are.

Matador NanoDry Packable Shower Towel

3. Microfibre Towel : It’s always worth packing a proper towel. Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.

Headlamp

4. Headtorch : Every backpacker should have a head torch! A decent head torch could save your life. If you want to explore caves, unlit temples, or simply find your way to the bathroom during a blackout, a headtorch is a must. Currently, I’m using the Petzl Actik Core rechargeable headlamp – an awesome piece of kit! Because it’s USB chargeable I never have to buy earth polluting batteries.

Eno Hammock

5. Hammock : Taking a tent backpacking is not always practical but hammocks are lightweight, cheap, strong, sexy (chicks dig hammocks) and allow you to pitch up for the night pretty much anywhere. Right now, I’m rocking a lovely parachute hammock – it’s light, colourful and tough.

6. Toiletry Bag : I always travel with a hanging toiletry bag as it’s a super-efficient way to organise your bathroom stuff. Well worth having, whether you are hanging it from a tree whilst camping, or a hook in a wall, it helps to have quick access to all your stuff.

Unlike many countries in Europe and the United States, it is not compulsory to have car insurance while driving in New Zealand. However, it is recommended – especially to foreign tourists.

The least you should hope to cover is third party insurance so that if you’re the cause of an accident, you won’t have to pay for damages to other vehicles involved. CDW and LDW are always included in New Zealand.

If this isn’t enough for you, it may be better to get full protection, such as the package offered by RentalCars.com . That will at least give you complete peace of mind on your road trip from Auckland!

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Now that we’ve helped you plan your road trip in the North Island, we imagine that you’re filling up the car with fuel or checking up on the best rental deals. And we don’t blame you!

Seeing the North Island (and pretty much any part of New Zealand) by car is a great way to get off the beaten track. You’ll find it so much easier to get to those paradise beaches and deep into forests parks than you would do if relying on public transport. And if you choose a camper van, you can save money that would go on hotels and hostels when in Auckland!

Whichever of the four awesome road trips from Auckland we’ve shown you, we hope you have a wonderful trip to this beautiful country. Get ready to have your mind blown!
