How to surf the web on Apple TV

Karen Haslam

For reasons best known to Apple, there is no web browser available on the Apple TV. Despite the fact that the Apple TV runs a version of iOS there is not a version of Safari designed for Apple TV and there is no substitute web browser available in the TV App Store.

But before you drown in disappointment, there are a few ways in which you can surf the web on your Apple TV. Read on to find out how.

We’ll look at three ways in which you can access your favourite websites on your TV screen, including popular TV Catchup channels, FaceBook, Google’s search engine and more. Read about how to watch OnDemand TV channels on Apple TV here .

Method 1: Surf the web on your Apple TV using AirPlay

This is the easiest way to surf the web on the Apple TV. It’s ideal if you want to share the surfing experience with friends and family who are in the room with you, or if what you are looking at on the web would benefit from a bigger screen.

Using Apple’s AirPlay you can stream the screen of your iPhone or your Mac to your TV screen.

Pros: You can see everything that you see on your iPhone or Mac on the TV screen.

Cons: You might as well be looking at your iPhone or Mac screen, and when it comes to scrolling and typing you will be. You won’t be able to use your iPhone for anything else while you are mirroring it’s screen on the TV.

How to view your iPhone screen on your TV

  • Swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone to view Control Centre.
  • Tap on Screen Mirroring
Choose your Apple TV.
  • You may be required to enter an AirPlay code for the Apple TV you are connecting too. This code will appear on the TV Screen attached to the Apple TV.
  • Navigate to Safari on your iPhone and surf the web.
  • If you rotate our iPhone into landscape you should be able to view the web using the full screen of your TV (some apps, like Facebook won’t rotate).

safari app tv

How to view the screen of your Mac on your TV

  • Click on the AirPlay icon from the menu bar at the top of the screen (a triangle pointing into a box)
  • Choose your Apple TV from the options
  • Your Mac display may alter so that it is optimised for the Apple TV (this made everything smaller on our MacBook screen) .
  • There are a few different ways you can set up AirPlay on your Mac and TV screen. You could mirror the Mac screen on the TV, in which case you will see everything on your Mac duplicated over on the TV.
  • However, if you want to surf on your TV screen, while leaving your Mac free to do something else, you can change the arrangement of your screens – this would be ideal if you wanted to stream video to your TV while typing into a Pages document on your Mac at the same time.
  • Open System Preferences > Display and click on Arrangement

safari app tv

  • Now based on how you arrange the screens you can drag your Safari (or other browser) window over to the Apple TV screen. To figure our which display is which in the illustration under the Arrangement tab click on the screen and you will see a red outline on the one that represents the Apple TV. Drag in that direction and the browser will appear on your TV screen.
  • You can now use your mouse, or trackpad to scroll around the browser on your TV screen.
  • We find it preferable to use a separate keyboard and mouse because they feel less connected to your Mac and therefore you feel more like you are surfing the web on the TV. Even better if you have a wireless mouse and keyboard. One reason why this feels more natural is that you don’t need to look at your Mac at all while surfing.
  • Remember that you won’t be able to continue using your Mac while someone else surfs the web on the TV screen (or rather you can, but there will be a battle over the mouse and keyboard). It’s the perfect set up for showing video on the TV screen – perhaps something on All4 or another Catch Up TV channel – while using your Mac for something else.

Read more about using AirPlay to stream from your Mac to TV here .

Method 2 – Surf the web using AirBrowser on your iPhone

One issue with surfing the web on your TV screen via your iPhone and AirPlay is the fact that you have to scroll and swipe around on your iPhone so you might as well be doing your surfing on that device rather than the TV. As we said earlier, it’s ideal if you want other people in the room to see what you are looking at, but otherwise, we’re not sure what you really gain.

Here’s where AirBrowser comes in.

Pros: AirBrowser puts a web browser on your TV screen while reserving the iPhone for controls and a keypad. You get a full desktop view of the web pages.

Cons: Not all elements of web pages worked in AirBrowser. Some forms were difficult to fill in if they used multiple choice. It costs £5.

AirBrowser places controls for browsing the web on your iPhone – so you can swipe around the page, or type using the iPhone keyboard, but the actual web page appears on the TV screen.

  • Download AirBrowser from the App Store on your iPhone (it costs £4.99)
  • Open the AirBrowser app.
  • You will be asked to Connect Second Screen, the animation shows you how, except the animation shows how it worked in iOS 10, rather than iOS 11.
  • Swipe up on Control Panel and choose Screen Mirroring.
  • Choose your Apple TV.
  • Now you should see a browser on the TV screen and a url bar on the iPhone. Tap on the URL bar and enter the name of the site you wish to visit, or a search phrase.
  • On the TV screen you will either see the website you wished to visit or the results of your Google search.
  • To scroll down the page swipe upwards with two fingers.
  • To click on a link use one finger to track to the link and tap.
  • To go back to the previous page tap on the back arrow at the top of the iPhone interface.
  • To view all the tabs you have open tap on the central icon that shows 9 dots.
  • You can view the site as it would appear on desktop or mobile by swiping between the two options at the bottom of the page.

safari app tv

We did encounter a few difficulties using AirBrowser. For example when it came to signing in to use services sometimes we weren’t able to because where a site used a multiple choice selection tool for, say, your date of birth or title, it wasn’t possible to select an option.

At other times we found that we couldn’t play video because it was in Flash. The browser seems to fool the site into thinking it’s a Mac, but of course your TV and your iPhone can’t download Flash so you can’t view the content.

safari app tv

Another issue we had was when viewing iTV player. We were able to get it to play the content but we weren’t able to select full screen view in order for the video player to fill the TV screen. Instead we were able to increase page size by zooming in (pinch to zoom). We had more success with iTV player than any of the other TV services. On my5 we got a video playback errors.

Method 3 – Using tvOSBrowser to surf the web on your Apple TV

This one is a little more complicated to set up, but essentially gives you a web browser on your Apple TV. You’ll need an Apple Developer account (which is free), Xcode and a USB-C cable or an adapter. If that doesn’t sound like you it probably won’t be worth you reading any further.

Pros: This is the closest you will get to an web browser app for the Apple TV.

Cons: It’s not easy to install and probably isn’t worth the effort.

Of course if you like tinkering with things like this, then go ahead. This would probably interest you too: How to jailbreak an Apple TV.

  • We’ll assume you have a developer account. If not you need to set one up here developer.apple.com/account.
  • Download Xcode from the Mac App Store.
  • Get a USB-A to USB-C cable.
  • Download the source code to tvOSBrowser using Xcode (you can get it from here https://github.com/steventroughtonsmith/tvOSBrowser)
  • This is where it all gets a little complicated. You have to remove some code in order to get the tvOSBrowser to work. We suggest you read this tutorial here .

Apple TV is one of the best media players out there with support for many games. However, Apple stripped off the support for Safari after Apple TV’s 3rd generation. Hence, you can’t install a web browser in the later updates.

While you can surf the web via AirPlay using your other Apple devices, not all websites and streaming apps support it. But there’s a way out! Thanks to ‘ jvanakker ‘ for developing a third-party web browser, you can still install a browser on your Apple TV. Let’s understand how to do it.

Note: Installing the tvOS browser on your Apple TV won’t void its warranty. However, it might require installing it (from scratch) from time to time due to Apple’s third-party developer policies.

Requirements to browse the web on Apple TV

How to install and surf the web on apple tv, how to use tvos web browser, other alternatives for surfing the web on apple tv.

Here are a few things you’ll need.

  • A Mac and a USB-C to USB-C cable.
  • An Apple Developer account. You can sign up for a free Apple Developer account on developer.apple.com/account .
  • Xcode on your Mac.

After you’ve downloaded and installed Xcode on your Mac, you’re ready to install the tvOS browser on your Apple TV.

  • Install Xcode from Mac’s App Store. Note : The setup file is around 5GB.
  • Now, connect your Apple TV to your Mac via the USB-C cable and open Xcode.
  • Visit github.com/jvanakker/tvOSBrowser on your Mac.

Open Xcode to download tvOS browser on Apple TV

  • Unzip the file on your Mac.

Open the Browser.xcodeproj file on Mac

  • A screen similar to this would appear. Now, change the Deployment Target to 14.0 .

Set custom Bundle Identifier name on Mac

  • From the top-down menu, select your Apple TV as the Target Device, and click the ▶ button.

Wait for the process to finish. Now you have for yourself an Apple TV running a custom version of Apple’s Safari web browser.

How to use web browser on Apple TV

The developer hasn’t updated the app for the latest Apple TV 4K with Siri Remote. So, there’s no way to use the ‘swivel’ control on this version of the tvOS browser. We’ll update this article when a new version for the latest Apple TV 4K is released. Though you can still use this version using the click buttons.

There are two modes with which you can control the browser. Double press the center of the touch area (center button in the newer version) to switch between scroll and cursor mode. A single tap on the touch area would reveal the Quick Menu in which you can input URLs, search Google, reload the page, or navigate back .

Double tapping the center area would reveal an advanced section wherein you can see your history, open favorite websites, clear cookies, and more. Remember to clear the tvOS browser’s cache from time to time to prevent it from slowing down.

Other alternatives for surfing the web on Apple TV

If you don’t happen to have a Mac or are just unable to install Safari on your Apple TV, you can use the alternatives mentioned below. Using these will skip the fussy steps required and save you some time.

1. Use AirPlay

More often than not, the streaming website that you’re trying to cast to your Apple TV support Apple’s AirPlay. Check our guide on how to use AirPlay to cast videos to Apple TV from iPhone, iPad, and Mac .

2. Surf web on Apple TV via third-party applications

If you cannot AirPlay the content to your Apple TV, you can stream videos to your Apple TV via third-party apps on your phone. AirBrowser is one such app that allows you to cast websites to Apple TV.

Download the AirBrowser app from iOS App Store (it costs $4.99), click screen mirroring, and choose your Apple TV. You’ll now be able to cast almost any content from any website in the world.

3. Connect your laptop directly via HDMI

Last but not least, you can directly connect your Mac to your TV by using the HDMI cable and then streaming the content as you usually would. If your Mac doesn’t happen to have an HDMI port, check out some of the best USB-C to HDMI adapters for your Mac .

How to install a web browser on Apple TV: image shows Apple TV

If you'd like to know how to install a web browser on Apple TV, then this article is for you. Apple TV is an ideal device for watching some of the most compelling TV currently being produced, with millions of movies and TV episodes to stream on your devices. However, when it comes to web browsing functionality, it's pretty limited.

Despite being one of the best TV streaming services , Apple removed Safari support after the 3rd generation of Apple TV meaning you can't install a web browser on the latest Apple TVs. However, there are some ways of still browsing the internet on your Apple TV and therefore the big screen of your TV. It might not rival the experience found on the best web browsers , but it can still add a little more versatility to your Apple TV. Here's how to do so.

How to use a web browser on Apple TV using AirPlay

The most effective way of viewing a web browser through your Apple TV is to use AirPlay. AirPlay is Apple's feature that makes it easy to stream many forms of media from your iPhone or iPad. By doing so, you can basically mirror what's on that screen and display it on your Apple TV. Here's how to do it:

  • Make sure that your devices are all connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • On your iPhone or iPad, open the Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner of the screen. With older devices such as the iPhone 8 or earlier, you need to swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen.
  • Tap the Screen Mirroring icon.
  • Select your Apple TV from the list of devices.
  • If an AirPlay passcode appears on your TV screen, enter the passcode on your iPhone or iPad.
  • From there, everything you do on your iPhone or iPad is displayed on your TV via your Apple TV. You can browse the internet through Safari on your mobile device while viewing it on the bigger screen of the Apple TV.
  • Any time you want to stop mirroring, simply reopen the Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring again but this time, tap Stop Mirroring. It's also possible to stop it at the Apple TV by pressing the Menu button.

By using AirPlay, you get the same experience as if you were browsing the web with your iPhone or iPad. That means you can type in web addresses or search for things by using the onscreen keyboard on either device, which is far easier than typing anything in using the Apple TV remote.

How to use a web browser on Apple TV using a third-party app

It's also possible to 'cast' websites to your Apple TV using a third-party app. Apps like AirBrowser cost money but are easily available through the App Store. By using it, you can often browse websites that AirPlay is not compatible with, giving you more functionality. That's because it's able to get around any issues with streaming for copyright reasons -- something that isn't really a legal issue if you are streaming from one device to another in the same room or building.

For many users though, AirPlay is an easier and cheaper solution. If you do want to use AirBrowser, here's how to use it:

  • Open the AirBrowser app and click Connect Second Screen.
  • Follow the instructions and click Screen Mirroring in the Control Center.
  • Choose your Apple TV device.
  • Browse on your iPad or iPhone as normal and view the content on your Apple TV.

How to use a web browser on Apple TV using your Mac

It's also possible to stream the activities of your Mac over to your Apple TV. It follows a fairly similar process to using your iPhone or iPad, but is slightly different. Here's what to do:

Sign up to receive the latest news, reviews, buying guides and deals direct to your inbox

  • On your Mac, click the Control Center icon next to the time on your menu bar.
  • Click Screen Mirroring.
  • Wait for your Mac to find the devices available.
  • Click the Apple TV name.
  • You may need to enter an AirPlay code to confirm that the correct devices are working together.
  • You can now use the web browser on your Mac while viewing the content on your Apple TV, giving you a larger view of what is unfolding.

Will there ever be an official Apple TV web browser?

Since Apple removed Safari from a much earlier version of Apple TV, it seems fairly unlikely that we'll see an official web browser again. Much of that is because it would be tricky to use.

While the Apple TV remote is fine for browsing content, it generally defaults to encouraging you to use your iPhone or iPad to enter any long strings of characters, ruining the point of using the Apple TV alone.

Ultimately, your best web browser on Apple TV experience is to use AirPlay or similar so you can browse the internet on your TV display while enjoying the convenience of typing on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.

How to browse the Web on Apple TV

The newest Apple TV doesn't come with any official options for a Web browser, but this quick hack will let you do some casual browsing from your couch.

safari app tv

The fourth-generation Apple TV comes with several new tricks that the older models are not privy to, such as Siri support and third-party apps and games. One feature missing, however, is the ability to browse the Web.

Despite tvOS being based heavily on iOS, the Safari browser has been stripped from the Apple TV, meaning the only browsing you will be doing is via mirroring with AirPlay from your other Apple devices.

With a simple hack, however, you will be browsing the Web with your Apple TV in a matter of minutes. Here's how it's done.

What you will need

You will need a couple of things before you get started, such as a free Apple Developer account, Xcode and a USB-C cable or an adapter.

If you don't already have a developer account with Apple, head over to developer.apple.com/account and sign in using your existing Apple ID.

Next, from your Mac, open the App Store, search for "Xcode" and download the application. It will automatically install.

If you happen to have a 12-inch MacBook , the included USB-C cable will work for this application. Otherwise, you will need a USB-A to USB-C cable, which you can find online for around $10. Just be careful of which one you buy (and reference this spreadsheet to see which ones are up to spec.)

Finally, you will need the source code to tvOSBrowser , which we will download from the GitHub repository using Xcode.

Installing the browser

Begin by opening the Applications folder in Finder and locating the Xcode.app. Right click on the application and select Show Package Contents . From there, navigate to Contents>Developer>Platforms>AppleTVOS.platform>Developer>SDKs>AppleTVOS.sdk>usr>include and locate the file Availability.h . Right click on the file and open in TextEdit or another text editor.

Locate these two lines of code, which can be found on lines 279 and 280:

  • #define __TVOS_UNAVAILABLE __OS_AVAILABILITY(tvos,unavailable)
  • #define __TVOS_PROHIBITED __OS_AVAILABILITY(tvos,unavailable)

Change them to:

  • #define __TVOS_UNAVAILABLE_NOTQUITE __OS_AVAILABILITY(tvos,unavailable)
  • #define __TVOS_PROHIBITED_NOTQUITE __OS_AVAILABILITY(tvos,unavailable)

Save the file and open Xcode. Ignore the window that loads and click on Source Control in the menu bar, then select Check Out . In the repository location field, paste "https://github.com/steventroughtonsmith/tvOSBrowser.git" and click Next . When asked, select the master branch of the repository and proceed.

safari-for-apple-tv-bundle-identifier.png

In the left pane of Xcode, click on the Browser app you just imported. You will need to alter the Bundle Identifier . By default, it is com.highcaffeinecontent.Browser . Change it to something unique like: com.[nickname].Browser . Just ensure there are no spaces in the identifier.

Below the Bundle Identifier field, click on the dropdown menu beside Team . Select your Apple ID. If you're not logged in, click Add an Account and login with your Apple ID credentials.

Connect your Apple TV to your Mac using the USB-C cable.

safari-for-apple-tv-output-source.png

At the top of the Xcode window, you will see Play and Stop buttons. Beside that are two menu buttons, one is the name of the app (in this case, Browser) and the other is the output source for where you will be executing the code. By default, if no Apple TV is detected, Xcode will run an Apple TV simulator upon executing the code. To ensure, you're pushing the code to the Apple TV, click on the button to the right and make sure Apple TV under Devices is selected, not Apple TV 1080p under tvOS Simulator .

Once the code finishes executing, you should see an app on your Apple TV called Safari. Click on it to open.

Using the browser on Apple TV

The Safari browser on Apple TV is relatively intuitive and simple to use.

Depending on which mode you're in sliding your finger around on the Apple TV remote's trackpad will move the cursor or scroll up and down the page. To switch between the modes, double-click the trackpad.

Clicking the trackpad does exactly what you would expect it to -- it clicks and will open links or select on-screen content. The Menu button operates as a back button. Double-clicking the Menu button will load a Settings menu, where you can change the homepage, view history and more. And pressing the Play/Pause button brings up an address and search bar, which uses Google as the default search engine.

The developer hasn't updated the source code in several months, and as such this is a very basic browser. It's missing some features you may find necessary from a computer or mobile device, but should suffice for basic needs of browsing via Apple TV.

How to browse the web on your Apple TV with AirWeb

safari app tv

Apple doesn't offer their Safari web browser on the Apple TV . However, if you have an iPhone or iPad with AirPlay ad the AirWeb app from the App Store you can easily and conveniently beam an optimized web browser right to your Apple TV. What's more, it's by far one of the best ways I've found to browse the internet on a television.

Note that AirWeb is compatible with the iPhone 4s and above as well as the iPad 2 and above. You can use the iPhone 4 but it isn't pretty and you'll need an additional cable attachment.

  • $1.99 - Download Now

Once you've gotten AirWeb installed on your iPhone or iPad, it will take you through a bunch of prompts that show you how to set up and use it. If you already know how to use AirPlay mirroring you should b good to go.

safari app tv

In order to navigate AirWeb, tap on the question mark in the lower left corner of the control screen to view all the shortcuts. For starters, just tap in the address bar at the top and go to a website. From there you can poke around, open a new tab, and more.

When it comes to scrolling, AirWeb supports to main forms, the first being to scroll with two fingers. In my experience I've found this to be a little awkward on the iPhone. It works perfectly find on the iPad however. I much prefer the second method which is to long press on the screen and tilt your iPhone or iPad up and down to scroll. I find this to be more natural and much easier to do without paying attention to the device in your hand.

If you quit AirWeb or disable mirroring, the in-app browser or AirWeb should save all your tabs so next time you mirror, everything is right where you left it. You can also add bookmarks for fast access to your favorite sites right within AirWeb.

I've found AirWeb to be great for times when I'm showing someone something and we don't all want to crouch around my iPad. Or times when I just want to lounge around in the living room and don't have my iPad handy. I just beam my content right to the big screen from my iPhone with AirWeb.

In this article, we will be exploring how you can browse the web with your Apple TV, just as if you were using an Apple TV web browser, and understand the differences compared to other smart TV platforms and why there isn’t specifically a web browser for Apple TV.

No, there is no web browser on Apple TV. You cannot use Safari on the Apple TV or Google Chrome because there isn’t one available on the device. You simply cannot install one at all.

But do not panic! I wouldn’t have done this article if there weren’t other methods to surf the net, would I?

Even if there’s no browser, you can use IPTV apps on Apple TV .

No, unfortunately, Safari web browser doesn’t come installed on Apple TV and there’s no easy way to install it. The easiest way to get Safari on your Apple TV is by using Airplay to cast the screen from an Apple device such as an iPhone, iPad, or any Apple computer.

If you are a tech person and want to play a bit with the code, there’s a way to actually install Safari on your Apple TV, however, it won’t be for everybody!

Because Apple TV is just not designed to work with a browser. The device could run a web browser but Apple wants users to utilize their phones to connect and cast/stream content to the device itself.

Therefore, we can say that there are 2 main reasons:

It is just not convenient to browse the web via a web browser on your TV. The remote is not intuitive and it is hard to navigate with it, so the next best thing is to use your phone as the remote and the Apple TV as the display.

You can cast the web browser of your phone on your AppleTV. A browser is not made available because you can use your phone to Google things and then cast that content to the device through the Apple Mirroring feature – something which we will learn about later in this article.

So the whole idea is to use your phone as the remote and you can pick and choose content to cast to your Apple TV device. It is clear that Apple wants you to use the native apps that come with the device itself.

So, we now understand there isn’t an actual web browser for Apple TV and we understand why Apple wants users to get a better experience by using the apps provided to them and focusing on users utilizing their phones for easier navigation.

So with all this knowledge, let’s go through some of the ways you can cast/stream content to your Apple TV device as if you were using an Apple TV web browser.

1. Native Apple AirPlay

Use Native Apple AirPlay To Use A Web Browser On Apple TV

Airplay is not a web browser and it is not an App that you can download, it is called Apple AirPlay – some of the examples we will be showing, later on, are basically using this feature in the background.

AirPlay is just Apple’s native casting/streaming feature you can use within apps such as YouTube or Netflix etc. You just have to find the AirPlay icon and then select your Apple TV and cast content in a few taps, easy as that.

How To Use AirPlay With Your Apple TV

Here are the simple steps you need to follow to start using AirPlay with your Apple TV via an iOS device:

Connect your iOS device to the same WiFi network . Both your iPhone or iPad etc. need to be connected to the same network as the Apple TV.

Find a video or web page you want to cast . Then look out for the AirPlay icon and tap it.

Tap the AirPlay button . Then you will see a menu that shows your compatible casting devices, hopefully, your Apple TV.

Choose your Apple TV and cast . Your Apple TV should show up in the list of compatible streaming devices, find the correct name like “Living room TV” and select it.

How To Use Airplay To Use Web Browser on Apple TV

Look out for the AirPlay icon above in the apps on your iOS device, you can cast from many different apps like your Photos, the web browsers, YouTube and other streaming services, etc.

By the way, if you are not a fan of Safari, check out what are the best web browsers for iPhone so you can stream your content in the best way.

2. AirBrowser

AirBrowser - A Great Way To Use A Web Browser On Apple TV

A fast and efficient way to use your iPhone or iPad to wirelessly connect to your Apple TV.

As with the other options, this one has a free trial so you can see how it works before you buy it. It has support for gesture control, pinch, and zoom and you can easily do common things like bookmarking and have multiple tabs open.

The touch on your iOS device can act as a pointer on the Apple TV and it will be just as if you were using an Apple TV web browser.

If you have a Mac, it’s probably time to improve your setup! After seeing these beautiful Mac Setups you will for sure start changing yours.

3. Web For Apple TV App

Web For Apple TV - App for Apple TV To Use Web Browser

This iOS app is also installed onto your Apple device like an iPhone or iPad and turns your phone into a fancy smart controller for your Apple TV.

Another app that lets you take over your TV, this one has more advanced gesture control and better support for the iPad.

With this app, it is easy to cast videos and web pages onto the big screen and use your phone as if it were a web browser for Apple TV.

AirWeb - A way to cast a web browser to Apple TV

An app that you can install from the Apple app store on your iPhone or iPad device.

You can use AirWeb for a smooth and frustration-free experience on the web via your Apple TV.

AirWeb will allow you to use your iPhone as the remote control and cast the browser to your Apple TV. As long as your Apple device supports AirPlay Mirroring, then you will have no problems using this app. Turning your TV into a web browser for Apple TV from your phone.

5. HDMI cable to mirror the screen

If you don’t mind using a cable or need faster response times, using the good old HDMI cable is still a way to get Safari (or any other web browser) into your TV without the need for the Apple TV.

In fact, it’s a way not only to get a web browser on your TV but also to mirror anything else you want from your device. From a movie to photos, email, etc. It will duplicate the screen of your device and show it on the TV.

Ideal when casting heavy files such as movies, where the WIFI connection might have trouble transmitting so much data in real-time.

If your external device doesn’t come with an HDMI connection, you can use USB-C to HDMI adapters.

6. Installing tvOSBrowser – An Open Sourced Project

tvOSBrowser - An alternative web browser for your Apple TV

Last but not least, if you are techy or brave enough to get into the dark waters of XCode, then you can give it a try to tvOSBrowser .

tvOSBrowser is an open-source project that allows you to run a basic web browser (using UIWebView) on your Apple TV.

You’ll have to run the project on your Mac and then stream it to your Apple TV (with or without cable), so it’s definitely not the best of the options, but it’s something to consider.

No. The official Google Chrome web browser cannot be used as an Apple TV web browser. This is because Apple does not want its users to install a web browser, the whole idea is to use the built-in casting features via AirPlay.

However, Google Chrome has its own Google Chromecast device which can be used to cast content to your TV and even use your big screen like an Apple TV web browser. You can cast from the Chrome web browser via your phone or computer.

The Chrome web browser has built-in support to cast content directly from a supporting device to the Apple TV.

If you want to cast content from your Mac computer, you might want to check the best web browsers for Mac .

At first, it may seem very confusing or weird as to why the Apple TV doesn’t have an official Apple TV web browser but once you understand the reason, it all makes sense.

A web browser is useful on the TV but the traditional TV remote is not intuitive and easy to navigate with, hence why Apple has refused to include an Apple TV web browser support and instead, focus on their AirPlay casting feature.

So, I hope this article clears up all the confusion and sets you in the right place with the 4 different methods you have, one of them should fit your needs.

Description.

It was ‘Sancharam’ that presented exploratory trips in their fullness in Indian visual media for the first time. Santhosh George Kulangara, the globetrotter, started his solo journeys outside India in 1997. He has already travelled through more than hundred countries, spanning the seven continents, with his camera. The wonderful experiences and splendid sights of those journeys were telecast by Asianet as ‘Sancharam’, a realistic visual travelogue. The viewers, who have always been fond of travel and knowledge, welcomed ‘Sancharam’ with great exuberance. In his turn, Santhosh George went about capturing in his camera the sights of the various lands, which the viewers haven’t seen and presented before them the diversity of world countries, as they longed to see. After 16 years since he had started travelling, ‘Sancharam’ has turned out to be an exclusive, round-the-clock exploration channel. And that is Safari. Thus, Safari has a unique history of transforming itself from a half-an-hour travelogue programme telecast once in a week into a 24 X 7 channel. Safari is a channel that brings the diversity of the global expanse to the visiting room of every Malayalee. This is the first exploration channel in India.Safari presents diverse programmes that provide entertainment and knowledge alike. World travels, Indian travels, numerous other journeys, history, geography, culture, art and adventure- all come before the viewers through this. The curiosity to know ‘what is beyond that’ is the real motive of all the explorations of mankind. The objective of Safari is to inspire each and every viewer to take up travels, both short and extensive, for experiencing and learning the world. Travels that take the viewer along... That is the ultimate objective of this channel.

Version 4.0.4

- Whole new design with better experience - New Live TV player with real time program schedule - Option to watch old episodes - Performance improvements - Player bug fixes

Safari app for apple TV

Hello dear SGK and team, really happy to see the possibilities and technology updates are being used to make the user experience to its highest levels. Although a little disappointed that there is no app for apple tv or google chrome-cast. This kind of apps will eliminate the prominence of cable tv operators, thus Safari TV will be available to everyone by spending a minimal cost. Hope you guys will consider this.

Developer Response ,

Casting to chrome cast is possible from our Android version of the app and for iOS you can mirror your screen from your control center to play on your Apple TV. We haven’t implemented AirPlay inside our player. But my mirroring works on iPhone and Apple TV. On Android without mirroring you can do the cast so you can use the other apps while playing safari on TV. Hope this clarifies

Loading problem

There is some issue with the old episodes, its not loading for long time I don’t know if am only facing this problem, but its been few days like this Kindly consider this . Huge fan of sancharam and am a medical student and usually i don't get time watch live episode. So please consider this request

Simplicity at its best

The app itself opens to the live tv without the hassles of signing up and registration processes, which I loved the most. To add, a regular viewer can easily navigate to the missed episodes. It would be great if you can add the video quality control buttons so that we can adjust as per the connectivity and the screen sizes. Thank you, love 😊
Happy to hear that you liked our new application. Currently we support to change the video quality for old episodes but not for live TV. But definitely this is something we have plans to optimise in future. Thanks again

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

YouTube TV now works in Safari on Mac

Phil Nickinson

One of the biggest live TV streaming services in the United States finally works on one of the three major browsers in the world. YouTube TV — before today had been unavailable in Safari on MacOS — now works on Apple’s default browser. ( As spotted by 9to5 Google .)

Previously, going to tv.youtube.com would kick you to a support page on all the other ways to watch YouTube TV if you were trying to do so from Safari. There’s no word on what changed in Safari (or MacOS) to allow YouTube TV to finally be supported, but we’re also not going to look gift horse in the mouth.

All of the usual features are there in Safari, which is exactly what you’d expect to see given that it’s a web-based service in a web browser. You can browse your library, view recommendations and recordings, and scroll through the live menu to see what’s on right that minute.

YouTube is at least the second-largest live streaming service in the U.S., with “more than 3 million” subscribers as of October 2020, which was the last time Google gave any sort of update. Hulu With Live TV reported 3.7 million subscribers as of August 12, 2021, and will give another update on November 10.

  • YouTube TV just got even better on iPhones and iPads

YouTube TV also remains available on every major streaming platform, including Roku , Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV , and Google TV . It’s also available on iOS and Android devices.

YouTube TV has a single streaming plan, which runs $65 per month and includes the ability to “record” as much as you want to the service’s cloud storage, and attach up to a half-dozen individual profiles to a single account. YouTube TV also has a handful of optional add-ons, such as HBO Max and Cinemax, a sports package, and more, that further build out the service.

There’s a reason YouTube TV has found itself the leader in live-streaming video. In fact, it has about twice as many subscribers to its cable-TV replacement as the next biggest platform. And. among other reasons like price, reliability, and abundance of channels, it is just packed with features. In fact, YouTube TV has so many features tucked away in there that you’ll be forgiven if you don’t spot them all at first. But we’ve done the legwork. We’ve watched hours and hours of YouTube TV. No. You cannot add apps to Apple TV 2. You can add apps to Apple TV 4, but to the best of my knowledge Apple won't allow browser apps for it.

Introduction

Chromecast has revolutionized the way we stream content from our devices to our TVs. With a simple plug-and-play setup, Chromecast allows you to cast your favorite shows, movies, and even web pages directly from your devices to the big screen. While many people are familiar with casting from popular streaming apps like Netflix and YouTube, not everyone knows that you can also cast directly from the Safari browser.

In this article, we will guide you through the steps to cast from Safari on both Mac and iOS devices. Whether you want to share a webpage with colleagues, stream a video, or play a slideshow, Chromecast offers a convenient solution.

But what exactly is Chromecast? Chromecast is a streaming media player developed by Google. It is a small, affordable device that plugs into the HDMI port of your TV. By connecting to your home Wi-Fi network, it allows you to easily stream content from your smartphone, tablet, or computer to your TV.

Now that we understand what Chromecast is, let’s move on to setting up Chromecast in order to start casting from Safari.

What is Chromecast?

Chromecast is a versatile media streaming device developed by Google. It allows you to wirelessly stream or cast content from your smartphone, tablet, or computer to your TV. By connecting the Chromecast device to the HDMI port on your TV and using your device as a remote control, you can enjoy a wide range of entertainment options on the big screen.

Chromecast is small and affordable, making it a popular choice for those seeking an easy and budget-friendly way to enhance their TV viewing experience. It supports various streaming services, including popular platforms like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Disney+, and many more.

One of the key features of Chromecast is its ability to cast content from a web browser, such as Safari. This means you can cast web pages, videos, and even presentations directly from your Mac or iOS device to your TV, creating a more immersive and enjoyable viewing experience.

Using Chromecast with Safari opens up a world of possibilities. Imagine casting a YouTube video onto the big screen while still being able to browse other websites on your device or sharing a photo slideshow with friends and family during a gathering. Chromecast with Safari allows you to do all this and more.

Furthermore, Chromecast is not limited to streaming media from your device’s storage. It can also cast content from compatible apps, eliminating the need for tedious cable connections or file transfers. This makes it incredibly convenient for sharing content or accessing online streaming services.

Chromecast is designed to be user-friendly and accessible to all types of users, whether tech-savvy or not. The setup process is simple, and the device seamlessly integrates with multiple devices and operating systems.

Now that we have a better understanding of what Chromecast is, let’s delve into the steps for setting it up to cast from Safari on your Mac or iOS device.

Setting up Chromecast

Setting up Chromecast is a straightforward process that requires a few simple steps. Whether you’re using a Mac or an iOS device, the setup process remains similar. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

  • First, ensure that your TV has an available HDMI port. Plug the Chromecast device into the HDMI port.
  • Connect the power cable to the Chromecast and plug it into a power outlet. Make sure the Chromecast device is powered on.
  • On your Mac or iOS device, ensure that you’re connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Chromecast device you want to set up.
  • Open the Safari browser on your Mac or iOS device.
  • Visit the Chromecast setup website. This website will guide you through the necessary steps to set up your Chromecast device.
  • Download the Google Home app on your Mac or iOS device if you don’t have it already.
  • Open the Google Home app and follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Chromecast. The app will prompt you to connect to the Chromecast device and enter the necessary Wi-Fi credentials.
  • Once the setup is complete, your Chromecast device is ready to cast from Safari.

It’s important to note that the steps for setting up Chromecast may vary slightly depending on the device you’re using. However, the general process remains the same.

Now that you have successfully set up your Chromecast, let’s move on to the next section to learn how to cast from Safari on your Mac or iOS device.

Casting from Safari on Mac

Once you have set up Chromecast , casting from Safari on your Mac is a breeze. To cast from Safari, follow these steps:

  • Make sure your Mac and Chromecast device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Open Safari on your Mac and navigate to the webpage or video you want to cast.
  • Look for the “Cast” icon in the Safari toolbar. It looks like a square with three curved lines in the corner.
  • Click on the “Cast” icon, and a list of available Chromecast devices will appear.
  • Select the Chromecast device you want to cast to. It may take a few seconds for the connection to establish.
  • Once connected, the webpage or video will start playing on your Chromecast-connected TV.

You can control the video playback from Safari on your Mac, including play, pause, rewind, and volume adjustments, using the on-screen controls or your keyboard.

If you want to stop casting, simply click on the “Cast” icon again in the Safari toolbar and select “Stop Casting.”

It’s worth noting that not all web pages are compatible with casting. Some websites may have restrictions that prevent casting, while others may offer their own casting options or require the use of specific extensions.

Casting from Safari on your Mac allows you to share web content seamlessly with others, making it ideal for presentations, group viewing, or simply enjoying your favorite websites on a larger screen.

Now that you know how to cast from Safari on your Mac, let’s move on to casting from Safari on your iPhone or iPad.

Casting from Safari on iPhone/iPad

Casting from Safari on your iPhone or iPad is just as easy as casting from Safari on your Mac. Follow these steps to cast from Safari on your iOS device:

  • Ensure that your iPhone or iPad and Chromecast device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Open Safari on your iOS device and navigate to the webpage or video you want to cast.
  • Tap on the “Share” button located at the bottom of the screen. It looks like a square with an arrow pointing upwards.
  • In the Share sheet that appears, scroll through the available options and tap on the “Cast” icon. If you don’t see the “Cast” icon, swipe left on the row of icons and tap on “More” to enable it.
  • A list of available Chromecast devices will appear. Select the Chromecast device you want to cast to.

Similar to casting from Safari on a Mac, you can control the playback of the video from Safari on your iPhone or iPad. You can pause, play, rewind, adjust volume, or even navigate to a different webpage without interrupting the casting.

To stop casting, simply tap on the “Cast” button in the Share sheet and select “Stop Casting.”

It’s important to note that not all websites support casting from Safari on iOS devices. Some websites may have limitations, so you may encounter restrictions or incompatibility with certain web content.

Casting from Safari on your iPhone or iPad allows you to enjoy your favorite web pages, videos, and presentations on the larger screen provided by your Chromecast-connected TV. It’s a great way to share content with friends, family, or colleagues or to simply have a more immersive browsing experience.

In the next section, we’ll address some common troubleshooting issues that you may encounter while casting from Safari.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

While casting from Safari using Chromecast generally works smoothly, you may encounter some common issues along the way. Here are a few troubleshooting tips to help you overcome these problems:

1. Ensure your devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network: Both your Mac/iOS device and Chromecast need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network for casting to work. Double-check that you are connected to the correct network on both devices.

2. Restart your devices: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues. Restart your Mac, iOS device, and Chromecast, and then try casting again.

3. Check for software and app updates: It’s important to keep your Safari browser, Google Home app, and Chromecast firmware up to date. Check for any available updates and install them before attempting to cast again.

4. Disable VPN or proxy settings: If you have VPN or proxy settings enabled on your device, try disabling them temporarily. VPNs and proxies can sometimes interfere with the casting process.

5. Clear cache and cookies: Clearing the cache and cookies in your Safari browser can help resolve casting issues. Go to Safari Preferences , select the “Privacy” tab, and click on “Manage Website Data” to clear the cache and cookies.

6. Disable ad-blockers and extensions: Certain ad-blockers or extensions in your Safari browser may interfere with casting. Temporarily disable any ad-blockers or extensions you have installed and see if the casting issue persists.

7. Restart your router: If all else fails, try restarting your Wi-Fi router. Sometimes, router issues can cause casting problems.

If you’re still experiencing difficulties with casting from Safari, you can visit the Chromecast Help Center on the Google website for further troubleshooting steps and support.

By following these troubleshooting tips, you can overcome common issues and enjoy seamless casting from Safari to your Chromecast-connected TV.

With the troubleshooting aspect covered, let’s wrap up this article.

Casting from Safari to your Chromecast device opens up a world of possibilities for sharing, streaming, and enjoying web content on the big screen. Whether you’re using a Mac or an iOS device, the process is simple and convenient.

In this article, we learned about Chromecast and its ability to stream content from various devices directly to your TV. We explored the steps for setting up Chromecast and casting from Safari on both Mac and iOS devices.

On Mac, casting from Safari involves a few clicks on the “Cast” icon, while on iOS devices, it requires tapping on the “Share” button and selecting the “Cast” option. Regardless of the device, casting from Safari allows you to share web pages, videos, presentations, and more on the big screen.

We also addressed some common troubleshooting issues that you may encounter while casting. From checking Wi-Fi connectivity to clearing cache and cookies, these troubleshooting tips can help resolve common casting problems.

Best VPN apps for Apple TV

Avatar for Benjamin Mayo

Setting up a VPN on your Apple TV 4K allows you to avoid geographic region restrictions and access services not normally available to you. With tvOS 17, VPN apps can now be installed on the Apple TV directly.

VPN apps available now for Apple TV include NordVPN , PureVPN , IPVanish , ExpressVPN, and more. Here’s all the best VPN apps for Apple TV available now …

Using a VPN to virtually change your location has a lot of advantages when it comes to streaming services, as so much video content is siloed due to license agreements for different regions. Services offer vastly different rosters of content depending on where you are geographically located.

However, up to now it has been quite difficult to use a VPN with the Apple TV box. The Apple TV did not support VPN natively and that meant you had to set up a VPN on your router and proxy connections through that. But with tvOS 17, the Apple TV can be easily configured to directly use a VPN connection by downloading a compatible VPN app from the App Store.

How to set up a VPN on Apple TV

To set up a VPN on the Apple TV, update to tvOS 17 and then download one of the compatible VPN apps listed below from the App Store.

Sign up for the VPN service and press the enable button inside the app to activate the VPN connection on your Apple TV device. Once a connection is established successfully, tvOS will present an alert ‘VPN App Connected’ in the corner of the screen.

When you are finished, you can disable VPN through the app, or go to the Settings app and manage installed VPN profiles in the VPN & Device Management section.

VPN apps for Apple TV

NordVPN has launched its Apple TV app, bringing the popular computer VPN service to the living room. You can use NordVPN to change geographic location and access content from streaming services without geo-restrictions. Choose from VPN servers located in over 60 countries. With the NordVPN app, your Apple TV network traffic is routed through the NordVPN servers in an encrypted and secure fashion. Communication uses the NordLynx protocol for maximum bandwidth and speed throughput.

Surfshark VPN

Surfshark VPN is now available on Apple TV with one-click set up. Subscribe online, then download their tvOS app and log in to start browsing over their VPN on your Apple TV box. Surfshark lets you connect to more than 3200 servers spanning 100 countries, features AE2-256 encryption and allows for unlimited simultaneous connections. That means you can be streaming on your Apple TV, while your whole household is also using Surfshark VPN on their devices.

PureVPN has racked up thousands of five star reviews for its iPhone and iPad app, and is now on the Apple TV App Store as well. Their UI shows a grid of available server locations, with easy download and upload speed tests to compare your options before you connect. PureVPN offers high-speed connections across more than 90 locations around the world, perfect for streaming in 4K and HD.

IPVanish is now available in the tvOS App Store. IPVanish offers a choice of more than 2,500 servers located all around the world. Their tvOS app lets you easily search their directory to find your server of choice. You can save multiple locations as favorites to easily switch between, and use their Optimal Location feature to automatically a nearby VPN relay server with the best connection to you, optimizing speed and response latency.

ExpressVPN app has also just launched an Apple TV app this month . One of the biggest name brands to bring Apple TV support, their app lets you browse securely with servers located in more than 105 countries worldwide. Download the app, sign in to your existing ExpressVPN account by scanning the QR code, and press one button to start using the Apple TV over the ExpressVPN network.

The first VPN app available for Apple TV is FlowVPN . The app lets you easily connect through their VPN and pick your preferred VPN server using a visual map UI. You will then be assigned a virtual IP address situated in that geographic location. FlowVPN supports WireGard and IPSec protocol options. You can try out FlowVPN with a free trial . Get the FlowVPN app from the App Store .

SwizzVPN offers VPNs physically located in Switzerland and many other countries around the world, with unlimited speed and bandwidth. They uniquely offer one-time unlock purchase options, so you don’t need a monthly subscription to use. Their Apple TV app is perhaps not the prettiest app you’ve ever seen but it is functional: choose from a list of servers, and then press the big green ‘Connect’ button to get started.

Tailscale is also now available on Apple TV. Tailscale lets you create your own secure peer-to-peer network without relying on an intermediate company server network. You can choose an exit node to relay all traffic through from the Apple TV, or the Apple TV can be designated as the exit node itself. You can use Tailscale for free with up to 3 users and 100 devices.

VPNIFY is now available on Apple TV , and their VPN uniquely offers a generous free ad-supported tier on desktop. This means you can do casual proxy browsing and try out their service without having to pay anything; reasonably priced premium paid plans are available for Apple TV and all platforms as optional upgrades. They have many geolocations to choose from and no bandwidth usage caps for streaming and downloading.

X-VPN offers 8000 proxy servers to choose from across 50 global locations. It can automatically detect the fastest speed server for you. You can change location in one click. An X-VPN account allows for surfing on up to five devices. They have a strict user privacy policy and save no data logs. Sign up for a subscription inside the app with monthly and yearly plans.

SafeShell promises fast and secure browsing with their collection of high-speed servers available in locations around the world. Their high-speed VPN connections allow you to stream in HD. Try SafeShell with a free trial before committing to a subscription tier. You can sign up seamlessly using In-App Purchase, with weekly, monthly or yearly plans. Their ‘zero logs’ policy means you can be assured that they do not retain online activity or connection logs.

We’ll update this list as more VPN apps become available for Apple TV on tvOS 17.
