samsonite spinner golf travel bag

Samsonite Spinner

Made by Athalon Sports (who licenses the right to use the Samsonite name, and who also manufactures the Samsonite Hardside golf travel case that we like so much), the Samsonite Spinner soft-case golf travel bag features four spinner wheels on the base of the bag that pivot 360 degrees. The design is intended to let you use the spinner wheels to roll the Spinner while it is standing up, or use the two in-line skate wheels on the side of the bag for pulling it along behind you. But like the OGIO Mammoth , another soft-case with spinner wheels on the base, the Samsonite Spinner had a tough time staying balanced upright, which ultimately led us to give up and just drag it in tow.

Tipping the scales at a svelte 10 pounds, the Samsonite Spinner is the second-lightest golf travel bag we have tested, behind only the Bag Boy T-2000 . The reduced weight means you can transport more of your stuff without running over the airlines’ 50 pound weight limit. The Spinner has quilted padding around most of the bag, although it strangely has none at all along the middle portion of the back panel. While this may have been driven by their assumption that your carry bag itself will provide protection for you clubs on that side, it seems like providing some cushioning in that spot wouldn’t have cost too much in terms of additional weight.

There are no internal storage pockets, and the only external storage comes from the removable shoe bag that zips on and off. One nice innovation is the clip loop on the top panel through which a small bag can be attached to the Spinner, enabling you to roll everything together (assuming you can keep the smaller bag balanced on top).

The $360 suggested retail price is breathtakingly steep, but we found it listed at most retailers for just under $100. It doesn’t really deliver on the upright rolling, but at that price (which makes it the least expensive bag we have tested), the Samsonite Spinner is worth considering as an entry-level purchase.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

The Samsonite Spinner is made of a nylon weave. The bottom of the bag features a hard plastic backing that extends 15 inches up the back panel of the Spinner to provide additional protection and some stability. Note, however, that the OGIO Mammoth (31 inches) and the Club Glove Last Bag (28 inches) both provide significantly more hard plastic protection on the back panel.

The bag is contoured to be wider at the base and taper at the top, with about a 4-inch difference at the extreme ends. This is purportedly to enhance the balance, but as we’ll describe below, it doesn’t help enough.

Samsonite Spinner Golf Travel Bag

There’s a reasonable amount of cushioning at the top of the Samsonite Spinner to protect the club heads. As we noted above, however, the absence of any cushioning at all at the middle of the back panel seems to be a misguided way to save on some weight. Dual two-way zippers run the length of the bag, providing easy access to the contents.

The design of the Samsonite Spinner golf travel bag includes:

  • three handles – one at the top of the bag, one on the side, and one at the base of the bag – each of which is made of steel cable and surrounded with a padded grip
  • a detachable oversize shoe pocket (see image at right) on the front panel that quickly unzips from the bag, providing an elegant way to schlep your footwear into the locker room
  • a plastic window to hold a business card or other ID tag
  • two adjustable internal straps to secure your golf bag
  • two in-line skate wheels for pulling the bag behind you
  • four additional spinner wheels on the base for rolling the Spinner in an upright position
  • two color options- black and steel

TRAVEL IMPRESSIONS

The allure of the marketing for the Samsonite Spinner (and implied in its very name) is the ability to roll the Spinner upright on the four spinner wheels mounted on the base. The problem is that there isn’t enough structure to the bag to keep it balanced – trying to roll it upright is like trying to keep your drunk friend walking just long enough to not attract the attention of the cop on the corner. There’s a lot of leaning, a quiet exertion of extreme effort, and ultimately some cursing under your breath.

The Spinner only weights 10 pounds (as tested), making it the second lightest bag we tested. We used the Samsonite Spinner with a standard-sized golf carry bag . As noted above, there are two internal straps with adjustable buckles that enable you to secure your golf bag. An oddity is that the strap at the top portion of the bag is positioned in a way that it has to be angled down to pass through the handle on the carry bag, which creates a slouch in the Spinner when it is standing up. Like it needs any more obstacles to standing up straight…

There was enough room in the interior of the Spinner to pack clothing for a 4-day golf trip. There aren’t any pockets to help in organizing the contents, so don’t expect everything to be where you originally packed it – after all, TSA is always going to root through your bag (as they should, since it appears on the x-rays as a bunch of long metal rods).

The removable shoe bag (see image) mounted on the front panel of the Spinner made for easy storage of a pair of shoes, and had room for some socks as well.

The in-line skate wheels rolled nicely, but after having experienced the glories of four-wheeled golf travel bags, we found it difficult to transition back to a standard two-wheeler.

At a retail price of $360, the Samsonite Spinner is the second most expensive travel bag in our tests. Thankfully, it can be ordered from most online outlets for about $100, which is a much better approximation of its value. Unfortunately, since we can’t guarantee that you’ll get that kind of deal, we had to dock some points in our “cost/value” rating.

For travelers, Samsonite manufactures some of the most reliable, dependable, and premium luggage. The best Samsonite luggage, as reviewed by actual owners, can be found here, whether you’re searching for a new expandable model or a spinner suitcase.

3 Things to Watch for in a Golf Bag?

golf travel bag

You will need a budget for your bag, and this is especially important for first-time buyers. Because, after spending a lot of money on a product, you’ll be disappointed if you can’t get the most out of it. So, before purchasing a product, you should justify your choice. The three most important factors to consider when purchasing golf travel bags are listed below.

You will choose whether you require a hard case or a soft case bag. A hard case bag is larger than a soft case bag, but it provides more protection for your golf equipment. However, depending on your needs, both types of bags have advantages and disadvantages. Hardcase bags, for example, require more space to transport anywhere but provide greater security. Soft case bags, on the other hand, resemble simple bags. However, it has advantages for carrying anywhere. You need a small space for this, but it does not provide security like a hard case. You should now have a better idea of which type of bag is best for you.

You will notice a difference in bag durability. For example, if you purchased a bag but were unable to use it for an extended period of time, you will be disappointed in its quality. So, before purchasing any travel bag, you should consider the material used to make it.

It would be best if you were determined before purchasing a bag with this wheels system. In the market, there are two kinds of wheel system bags. Pull-type wheels are ideal for transporting large amounts of golf equipment. If you don’t need to carry as much equipment, you can purchase a soldering bag.

You must be aware of the weight of your bag. You will always try to bring a compact, lightweight bag to help you carry your bag. However, if you have the option of pulling the wheels bag, the weight is not a fact.

Top 3 Samsonite golf travel bags

  • Limited Colors : The bag only comes in one color: black. You might not find this color appealing or suitable for your style or preference.

Samsonite Golf Travel Bag Review – (Before You Buy)

Today we are looking at a very durable golf case that will be an outstanding choice for players that like to take their game on the road. This product will empower you to save money on pesky club rentals, and bring your favorite stick with you everywhere that you go.

But do the case perform to your high standards? That is the question that must be asked of any golf club travel apparatus. Read on for an in-depth review of the Samsonite travel case to find out.

samsonite spinner golf travel bag

Build Quality

Review summary.

Clearly, there are lots to like with this product. Durable, effective, and altogether great at what it does, there is little not to like.

Samsonite Golf Travel Bag – A Quick look

  • Hardtop will prevent any sort of damage
  • Perfectly sized for absolutely any golf bag
  • The padded interior will prevent damage to your golf clubs
  • Price may be restrictive to budget-minded buyers
  • A somewhat heavy product that may be difficult to move.

Samsonite Golf Travel Bag Specifications

  • The lightweight / durable solid ABS Shell shields your golf bag and clubs from the rigors of air travel.
  • Features a padded quilted interior with extra foam cushioning on top to protect club heads.
  • 4 multi-directional spinner wheels and 2 in-line skate wheels.
  • Internal compression straps secure the golf bag inside the case.
  • Accommodates larger 10.5″ top golf bags with longer, 48″ clubs.

Important Things To Consider Before Buying Travel Case

And now, let’s take a look at a few key considerations for buying a travel case.

The weight of your travel case will have a radical impact on its ultimate value. While most people buy this product to save money on renting clubs, they don’t go the extra mile of actually considering how much it will cost to won it.

Remember that most airlines charge you by the pound for the stuff that you bring on the plane. In other words, the heavier your golf bag, the more it winds up costing.

Getting something that is lightweight can save you massive amounts of money over time if you travel often.

There are both hard and soft-covered golf bag cases. Softer cases tend to be lighter which will save you lots of money in the long run. However, they don’t always do an excellent job of protecting your clubs.

Harder cases have the opposite set of factors. They are very good at protecting your clubs but they tend to be heavy and therefore quite expensive to travel with.

You’ll need to decide for yourself which factor is more important.

it is not only the interior of the bag but also the exterior that has a bearing on the product’s ultimate performance. Higher-end bags will often feature a padded interior that will help you to keep your clubs from getting scratched or banged up. This can be a very worthwhile feature to get in the long run.

And finally, price. This is a product that can, unfortunately, get fairly pricey. The Samsonite is, in fact, an example of a travel case that is on the pricier side. A really good as may cost you roughly what a new driver does. For buyers that want to keep their budget under control, this may be a bitter pill to swallow.

There are more affordable options available to those on a restrictive budget. However, one additional thing to keep in mind is that a good travel case should last a lifetime. It really is a one-time purchase.

Check Latest Price

Samsonite Golf Travel Case Review – [ In-Depth]

The Samsonite is a hard-topped case that is sized to fit the needs of virtually any golf bag you could throw at it. Not too big, nor too small, your clubs will fit perfectly within the padded interior for a smooth ride.

It is a fairly heavy bag, but it features wheels that will hopefully make it easier to get around with. It is also on the pricier side which will be somewhat disappointing to buyers on a budget. However, if you want to buy a bag that should last you for many, many years to come it is a great option to consider.

Samsonite Golf Case Features & Benefits

Let’s dive right into it, shall we? Here are some important features and benefits.

Hearty Case

The case exterior is extremely durable. That is the most important, and indeed the most impressive aspect of this piece of equipment. Even the most trying transportation experiences will not overcome the fortified case.

Soft Interior

Equally important to the tough exterior is the gentle interior. It is soft and padded, specifically designed to avoid scratching or damaging your clubs. The soft exterior will improve the versatility of the bag and improve its longevity.

Easy(Ish) To Transport

Though the weight of this product is fairly restrictive it nevertheless transports very well. This is thanks to the wheels attached to the bottom of the bag. This feature makes it very easy to take around an airport.

What People Are Saying About Samsonite Golf Travel Case?

As always, I also looked at what the users had to say to help determine what it was like to own this product in the long term. For the most part, people really dug it. There is no questioning the fact that the bag does a good job of keeping clubs nice and secure.

However, there were some people very bothered by the weight and maneuverability of the unit.

Bottom line? It’s a great product that will be good for people that have the money to pay for it. The exquisite build pretty much clinches the deal as far as I am concerned.

The portability factor is a little bit restrictive but then such is the price that we often pay when investing in something so durable.

Best Luggage for International Travel to Make Your Trip Abroad Easy and Enjoyable

Travelers with luggage using smart phones while waiting in line for boarding at airport

Our evaluations and opinions are not influenced by our advertising relationships, but we may earn a commission from our partners’ links. This content is created independently from TIME’s editorial staff. Learn more about it.

More Americans are traveling abroad with over “one-in-five Americans planning on vacationing in a foreign country in the near future,” according to Reuters . I myself head to Sweden for a few weeks every summer to visit my in-laws, and packing our suitcases with clothes—both sweaters and bathing suits because Swedish weather can be unpredictable—along with gifts for relatives is a days-long undertaking.

When traveling internationally, most people focus on important stuff like updating passports, understanding customs requirements, making hotel reservations, and planning exciting itineraries, but choosing the right luggage for your long-haul trip ranks up there in ensuring you and yours have a fun and hassle-free trip.

“Choosing the right luggage helps to keep your trip smooth and uncomplicated,” says Ivette Manner s, a travel and bridal writer who goes around the globe for her job several times a year. “I travel often for work and leisure and like to keep things simple. You don’t want to rush through airports, customs, taxis, and public transport being bogged down with a lot of baggage—and you don’t want to make the mistake of leaving anything crucial behind.” she says.

What to consider when choosing luggage for international travel

Situation equals size.

Whether you’re jetting off for a weekend wedding or embarking on a multi-city trip will help you decide which type of suitcase you need: carry-on, mid size, oversized, weekender, and more. Also, how many are in your party? Traveling solo or with family, friends, or loved ones?

Visiting Europe with my family for two or three weeks means we need larger, checked luggage paired with smaller carry-on backpacks and totes for the flights. When traveling for work, Manners takes “one roomy, zip-top tote bag and a medium-size suitcase.” The length of stay, and purpose of travel will help determine the size and type of luggage you need.

Airline compliance

It is zero fun to have to check your carry-on last-minute or pay extra exorbitant fees because you overstuffed your luggage and exceeded weight and size limits. “As soon as you book your flight, check the airline’s baggage allowance and restrictions policy,” cautions Manners, so you can stay within the baggage dimensions. “It’s a good idea to invest in a bag within the baggage dimensions allowed by the airline(s) you frequently travel on, so you’re not surprised at the airport with extra baggage charges,” she adds.

According to TravelPro , while most domestic airlines allow you up to 35 pounds for carry-on baggage for domestic flights and 50 pounds max for checked luggage (though you can pay extra for up to 70 pounds), international travel often caps carry-ons at 18 pounds. The exception being British Airways which allows a whopping 51 pounds for carry-on bags! Kayak says that a carry-on bag should be no longer than 21.5 inches long, though this does vary airline by airline and I have friends who swear they fly everywhere with their 22-inch long carry-on. To be safe, and avoid trouble, always check ahead to know your baggage allowance before your trip!

To stay in compliance—and if you’re someone who tends to overpack (insert raised hand emoji)—Manners recommends getting a luggage scale to keep yourself in check. “Some people also swear by packing cubes,” adds Manners, which some say allows you to pack even more while keeping clothing sorted and wrinkle-free. If you’re new to, but interested in packing cubes, Manners recommends purchasing inexpensive options on Amazon to see if they would work for you before your next big trip.

Luggage should last years and is a worthy investment, but with many high-quality and low-cost options on the market you don’t have to break the bank. Legacy names like Samsonite keep innovation and quality high while still being fairly priced. “Look at a brand’s warranty,” advises Manners, which safeguards against wear, tear, and damages that happen frequently with luggage. For instance, the premium brand, Briggs and Riley , comes with a higher price tag but a lifetime guarantee. I chose bags for this list from around $100 to several hundred dollars to meet all your price points and needs.

Materials and mobility

“People love those fancy aluminum suitcases ,” says Manners. “But while they look super chic, they’re not always practical, not to mention super expensive.” They get banged up and scratched and you have to take them to the brand to get repaired. “But polycarbonate hard shell suitcases can take more wear,” she says. Other things to consider in a suitcase are the materials: are you looking for soft or hardshell? Also, pay attention and test out zippers, locks, roomy interior compartments that can expand, and the durability and quality of wheels.

Best size luggage for international travel

“I like medium-size check-in suitcases,” says Manners.” It helps keep you from overpacking, but allows you to take what you need for a week of travel. And you’ll be able to move around easier in transit.” If traveling alone or sharing a suitcase, we find medium size suitcases (usually around 26-28 inches in length) to be ideal. Look for suitcases that can expand and compress for extra packing needs. Weighing around 10 pounds empty, you can pack a lot, but make sure you don’t go over the airline weight limits.

Tips for buying a suitcase for international travel

Online retailers and outlet stores are both great places to buy luggage , especially during major shopping days. But you should first check the baggage requirements of the airline you intend to fly, including restrictions, and extra charges, so you’re not met with any surprises.

Once you’ve determined your right size, Manners suggest “finding one with well-made spinning wheels and a comfortable, sturdy retractable handle.” Another thing to consider is the material, like soft side, hard side, waterproof, etc. And don’t forget important details, like durable zippers, solid locks, and lots of room and interior compartments to pack everything you need. Many brands offer 60-100-day free trials and money-back guarantees, so utilize these policies to try out the luggage before you invest.

How we selected the best luggage for international travel

As a former travel writer and editor myself, I have zig-zagged continents for work and leisure. I also tapped jet-setting friends, colleagues, and experts who weighed in on their favorite luggage. I tested different brands, read through customer reviews and looked at certain criteria.

Luggage size and type

Whether you’re jetting off for a swanky girls weekend or a longer trip abroad, the type of trip you’re taking will help determine which luggage to choose, so I rated them all (weekender, duffel, backpack, carry-on, larger checked suitcases, and trunks), examining their storage capacity, expandability, organizational features, weight, and construction.

Features and materials

Luggage these days offer so many high-tech features, like charging ports and nearly-indestructible thermoplastic exteriors, as well as fun extras including laundry bags, TSA-approved locks, multiple storage capabilities, along with lifetime guarantees that will help your luggage last a lifetime.

International airline compliance

I found international baggage allowance to differ slightly from American domestic, so be sure and check your airline baggage requirements first before travel. That said, for carry-ons, the general rule of thumb is for an international carry-on to be no bigger than 21.5-21.7 inches long and weigh 18 pounds. Again, while rules (and adherence) vary from airline to airline, to be safe, I chose carry-ons that meet these requirements.

I chose luggage at every price point and chose the best in class across the board from budget to luxe in all types of luggage.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Which luggage brand is best for international travel.

Well-known luggage brands like Samsonite and Travelpro have earned reputations for both quality and affordability, so they made my list. “I really recommend Away and TravelPro suitcases,” adds Manners. I also included more expensive options like Briggs & Riley, because their no-questions-asked lifetime guarantee on all of their luggage is unmatched industry wide.

Is hard luggage better than soft for international travel?

“Some people love hard case bags, but I find that you can pack more things in a softside suitcase.” says Manners. Hardside versus softside is really a preference. Softside seems to scuff less because of the treated materials, while hardside suitcases can also handle wear and tear and seem to be more trendy these days.

What is the best material for checked luggage?

“That depends on preference, but a nylon with coating to prevent scuffs and scratches for softside luggage, and polycarbonate-shell or thermoplastic are incredibly durable If you like hard case suitcases,” says Manners.

How many suitcases can you take on an international flight?

This often depends on the type of airplane ticket you purchase. Some tickets include your first checked bag for free, then you have to pay a fee for additional bags. Other tickets don’t include baggage, so you’ll have to pay a certain fee for the first checked-in bag, plus fees for additional bags. Look into bag allowances before you buy your tickets, warns Manners, so you can factor the cost of your checked bags into your flight—and avoid surprises at the airport.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
